COMMENTS from the publisher FIFTY YEARS YOUNG As the Arabian Horse Times nears its 50th Anniversary this summer, I’ve been thinking about all that this magazine has seen and recorded—not just five decades of history, but of growth, challenge, and, at least in my experience, great fun. It’s on my mind as I look to the future. The Times, which was born in July 1970, was the brainchild of Arabian owner/breeder Walter Mishek, who shepherded it through its first 40 years. Since 2010, when I purchased it, I have overseen its growth across a range of platforms as we embrace the digital world and today’s marketing scene. In 1970 (coincidentally, around the time that my parents made a commitment to the Arabian breed), there were a lot of small breeders, with farms scattered throughout the country, who stood stallions and kept mares. There was no artificial insemination or transported semen, so if you bred your mare, you shipped her to the stallion, enabling stallion owners to enjoy the added income of board. The real benefit of that, however, was that many owners bred in their own areas, so stallions all over the country were patronized, contributing a variety of bloodlines. Almost all of that has changed. Now, fewer stallions breed the majority of mares; those mares never have to leave home; and there are not small outposts of Arabian horses in nearly every locale, making marketing the breed infinitely easier. In half a century of the show ring, we have seen some of the greatest horses ever. Still, 1970 remains a standout year, because the U.S. National Champion Stallion was Wayne Newton’s Polish import, *Aramus. To this day, I hear people speak of him, remembering the day they saw him win, many of them adding that he made them re-define their breeding goals. Since that era, we’ve seen a steady evolution of breathtaking quality. I think most would agree that while far fewer horses are bred now than were “back in the day,” their overall quality has improved. Probably the most undesirable development of the past 50 years is that it is harder now than ever to interest people in owning horses. Fewer families have farms, fewer have relatives with equine knowledge to share, and anyway, computers and the internet take up everyone’s time. Attention spans are shorter, and there is far more competition for the leisure dollar than there was in the past. So, if we want to evolve over the next 50 years as we have over the past, overcoming those challenges is our goal. That’s why we have to show that these days, having Arabians is a satisfying lifestyle in a turbulent world (that’s a major attraction). And we have to recognize that in order to get potential newcomers’ attention, we must offer events that are exciting and entertaining. This is a call to action, because we need a lot of improvement in that area. We have accomplished a lot in the past—you can see it in the pages of old issues of the Times. Our horses have always done their part. Now, we have to do ours and give them the chance not only to survive, but to thrive, in years to come.

Arabian Horse Times and AHTAbroad is proud to announce 2019’s Dams of Excellence, honoring those mares that are the heart and foundation of our Arabian breed. Having met a strict qualifying criteria in the halter and/or performance arena with a show and/or production record that fulfills a minimum of four of the qualifying championships at the world’s top events, these nominated mares are the keepers of their heritage, the matriarchs of their families, the mothers of the future. How fortunate we were to purchase two incredible *Elkana daughters, the dam line for our whole breeding program. Then to add three amazing stallions to complete our journey: Baske Afire, Hey Hallelujah and A Temptation, all deceased but their legacy lives on and on! I continue to breed horses in the hope that we are helping the gene pool with correct, kind and trainable horses; not all national champions perhaps, but champions to their owners! A TEMPTATION

Most vivid/impactful memory of mare ... For sure, the night she was chosen as National Champion Mare! She had won the National Championship in English with Tim Shea the year prior and we didn’t dare hope, but we asked that he please show her in halter too. When Stormy Skye Arabians’ unanimous Brazilian Gold National Champion Junior Colt Razeer Serondella first arrived in the United States late in 2018, the plan was to allow him time to acclimate to his new environment before beginning his career as a breeding stallion. According to Blake Skole, who stands the young stallion at his Cedar Heights Farm in Missouri, the plan has unfolded perfectly. Arabian Horse Times | 24 | Volume 50, No. 8

“Last year, we focused 110% on easing Razeer into his new life,” Skole says. “Because he was only a 2-year-old, we were careful with him, choosing to breed primarily in-house the first year. He did extremely well and was easy to train to the process. Our goal was to establish his breeding routine and get a few foals on the ground in 2020.” Stormy Skye will welcome those highly anticipated first foals in late April and early May. Razeer Serondella is a son of one of Brazil’s truly extraordinary sires, El Tino, and out of the phenomenal international champion Queen Ayda FWM, herself a daughter of the late, great *FA El Shawan. Bred by legendary Brazilian horseman Fabio Amorosino, Razeer will continue to figure largely in his Haras Serondella breeding program. “We are fully committed to his future!” states Amorosino. “El Tino and FA El Shawan can add complementary qualities to very exquisite pedigrees. We can’t wait to breed ALL of our mares to Razeer! I had the opportunity to judge
his dam and was very impressed by her overall balance and beauty, which she has passed on. Razeer has very solid conformation, with an outstanding, well-set neck and a very refined, ‘Shawan look-at-me’ attitude.” Fellow Brazilian Rodolfo Guzzo agrees. “He is a beautiful colt,” says Guzzo. “He also has good movement, intelligence, and represents a perfect cross between El Tino and FA El Shawan.” The fact that Razeer Serondella was born abroad and is not eligible to compete in this year’s Futurity championship factored into Stormy Skye’s decision to put a laser-focus on his breeding career. That said, they are also looking forward to his return to competition in the future. “He has no major faults,” Blake exclaims. “He can only complement the high-quality mares we have carefully selected for him. It is our goal to breed only the best foals we can.” For now, further adventures in the show ring will have to take a back seat. Razeer Serondella is busy creating his legacy for the future. ■

LIVING LIFE INTHE FAZT LANE BY T H E R ES A C A R DA M O N E
Dr. Nancy O’ Reilly never expected to fall in love with horses. She already had a very full life as an international philanthropist and popular author; well-known as an advocate for the empowerment of women on a global scale. But about seven years ago, Dr. Nancy was introduced to the Arabian horse—which opened up a whole new dimension to her life. She was smitten, and before long, she developed into an accomplished horsewoman. More recently, she has begun to establish herself as a breeder. “My love of horses began later in life,” Dr. Nancy explains. “And at first, I had no idea what it would mean to me. My first experience with showing was in liberty classes before I started riding. Now, I ride, I drive, and I breed horses! I think it is important for the breed that our horses be rideable and beautiful. I’m learning so much. It is such fun and it is clear to me that the more I learn, the less I know.” Operating under the moniker Amazing Horse Woman LLC, Dr. Nancy has collected a sensational group of horses as the foundation of her breeding program at Southern California Equestrian Center in Somis, CA. Foremost among them is her 2019 United States Reserve National Champion English Pleasure stallion, Life Inthe Fazt Lane. Under the expert guidance of Jim Lowe, “Eddie” (as he is known in the barn) delivered a break-through performance to clinch the Reserve National Champion title. In doing so, he demonstrated the superb motion, carriage, and attitude that has produced top English horses in every generation of his pedigree. Life Inthe Fazt Lane is among the many national winners sired by the great Vegaz, himself a U.S. National Champion English Pleasure Futurity and U.S. National Champion English Pleasure Jr. Horse, as well as the 2010 U.S. Reserve National Champion English Pleasure winner. Eddie’s dam is the remarkable producer, River Dance NA, who is also the mother of 2019 U.S. National Champion Country Pleasure Driving horse, Best Of My
Love, Eddie’s full sibling by Vegaz, and additional national champions Heartache Tonight, KF Lord of the Dance, and Victim of Love. With a pedigree stacked with the most famous names in classic Arabian performance breeding, Life Inthe Fazt Lane is wired to reproduce himself through his offspring. To date, they are uniformly leggy, fancy movers with incredible necks and shoulders and the kind of attitude and drive that will further guarantee their show ring success. After Eddie’s performance at the U.S. Nationals, the Arabian public is looking forward to seeing what his kids do in the show ring. Of course, they are also eager to have another chance to see Life Inthe Fazt Lane in action himself. “Eddie is a very cool guy,” Dr. Nancy relates affectionately. “He is one of the sweetest horses you’ll ever meet. When some people hear the word stallion, they think of a demanding, powerful animal. But he loves attention and is very people-oriented and friendly; he’s really laid-back until he starts moving!” While Life Inthe Fazt Lane will be busy fulfilling his breeding commitments this year, it is also likely that he will be selectively shown, with Scottsdale being a potential target. Ultimately, Eddie’s path may lead back to Tulsa for another go at the National Champion English Pleasure title. Dr. Nancy likes that idea. “After all, why not?” she says. ■

Scottsdale REINING Natalie Pennell
T
he Arabian Reining Horse Association (ARHA) would like to welcome you to the prestigious 65th Annual Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show. Not sure if you have heard, but the Scottsdale forecast is predicted to be REINING all week!
The Reining Futurity Classic will kick off on February 19th with the finals taking place on the 21st and 22nd (my two favorite nights of the year). Joe Betten and the Ames Family’s generosity is the backbone of the ARHA. Their continued contributions create opportunities to grow and build our breed. We could not do this without them, and I cannot properly express how grateful the ARHA is for their support. Thanks to Glenmoor Farms’ sponsorship, the Celebrity Slide is back! We know we will have a lot of fun, while we show off the world of reining to a crowd that may not get down to our side of the fairgrounds that often. Thank you to everyone who supports the ARHA through their memberships, participation and sponsorships. We are looking forward to the show starting, seeing all of you, and celebrating the Arabian reining horse. Best of luck to everyone!

2020 Scottsdale Reining Futurity Classic ... An ARHA Tradition by Catherine Cole Ferandelli
B
ack in the late 90s, a gathering of Arabian reining horse enthusiasts met to address their shared concerns of the dwindling Arabian reining horse competition entries. Equally passionate in their belief that reining is one of the most dynamic of all the many Arabian horse disciplines, they sought to create a venue to ‘grab and gather’ their own and bring new blood into the sport. The founding members (including Mary Jane Brown, Russ Brown, Robb Walther and Eleanor Hamilton) recruited Audrey Zinke (owner of legendary Arabian reining stallions MHR Muscateal and Im The Real Deal) and Phyllis LaMalfa. Both were as fired up as benefactors to recruit members for an organization that would reawaken the Arabian reining horse. Thus was born the Arabian Reining Horse Association (ARHA), a group now 200 members strong whose showcase is the annual Scottsdale Reining Futurity Classic. ARHA’s journey as an organization has taken twists and turns over the years, always seeking to put on reining events infused with adrenalin for competitors, owners, breeders and anyone who wants to witness some of the most athletic equine maneuvers possible, all the while being scored performing the strict course of a specific pattern. Re-energized several years in by the generosity of iconic horsemen including Joe Betten, Tom Redmond and the late Dick Ames, the Scottsdale Reining Futurity Classic class was established. Designed to debut the best 4- and 5-year-old purebred and Half-Arabian reiners, the Futurity Classic not only offers a big payout ($75,000 for 2020, plus prize saddles and plenty of swag), it also promotes breeding, new enthusiasts, and pure, unshackled excitement. It’s nearly impossible to contain oneself while witnessing that near perfect run down, slide stop and roll back. The reining show pen delivers whoop, whoop and whistle from the spectators like no other.

The 2020 Scottsdale reining pen is bringing back a former favorite festivity— The Celebrity Slide. The event pairs a reining pro giving partnering instruction to an ‘individual of renown.’ No doubt, it is the ‘go to’ event for which no one knows the outcome. Will the celebrity stay on pattern is always the big unspoken question! Will they follow the trainer’s instruction? Rumor has it that reining enthusiast William Shatner is stepping up as one of the entries. Stay tuned!

As a result, the Scottsdale Reining classes are numerous, with amateur events divided by up to seven different age groups, and also by rider achievement. Inevitably, the excitement of showing a reiner beacons to riders from parts of the show circuit. Exampling this are two long-time saddle seat riders with Vicki Humphrey Training Center. Both have self-confessed to ‘dipping their toe’ into the reining show pen this year.
Laura Carrington, a proud 2019 U.S. National Champion Half-Arabian English Pleasure AAOTR 40 & Over winner nods in agreement, “I’ve ridden all my life so that helps in understanding the reining basics. I too am in awe of how disciplined these horses are, yet free with their movement. I’m also entered in the Half-Arabian Amateur Reining Limit Rider, and looking forward to some new and different horse show fun!”

Crystal McNutt, a reining legend in her own right, extolls this fact and adds, “The Scottsdale Reining Futurity has been a huge factor in improving the quality of Arabian reining horses. The excitement of seeing these young horses show their stuff is a great achievement. Still, what’s even better is that many of these horses go on to lengthy careers, showing with amateurs on their backs. This is a testimony to these horses for learning their jobs well and enjoying what they do for years on end. Many horses show well into their teens, showing and winning with riders of all ages and experience.”
National Saddle Seat Champion, plans to show in the Half-Arabian Amateur Reining Limit Rider. Izzy laughs, “I love riding saddle seat and in fact, many of its fundamentals translate to the fundamentals and timing of riding a reiner. These horses are amazing, truly solid citizens, yet they’re capable of ‘turning it on’ for a flashy performance. Lessons on a reiner really cranks up the adrenalin!”

Nowadays, specific Arabian reining horse pedigrees are commonly referred to when breeding or choosing a reining prospect, thanks to the dedication of many enthusiasts, including the aforementioned.

With cash payouts for reining horses of all ages, amateur entries and the Futurity, the 2020 Scottsdale Reining Classic has something for everyone. If you’ve never done so before, come witness the debut of the best young Arabian reining horse prospects, shown by the best in the business. Watch young riders literally in short stirrups going through the motions., and cheer on our daring Celebrity Slide competitors. You’ll be in awe of these incredible equine athletes. It will be a full week of fun, support Arabian Reining with your best cheer, and (most of all) have a great time! n

A CENTER FOR R EINING: Silver Spurs Equine, LLC
What It Takes
BY THERESA CARDAMONE
Michael and Michelle Miola have spent the better part of their lifetimes enjoying the world of the horse. In the process, they have developed an unmatched, comprehensive program dedicated to reining horses—Silver Spurs Equine, LLC. The original location in Scottsdale, AZ, has been augmented with a ranch in Purcell, OK, less than an hour from Oklahoma City, the capital of the reining industry. With a cutting-edge training facility in such proximity to reining’s biggest events, Silver Spurs is a central outlet where people can shop for young prospects or breeding opportunities. Supported by a generous futurity incentive program, it offers mare owners an incomparable collection of 39 stallions who collectively represent the world’s most successful reining bloodlines. Ar abian Horse Times | 10 | Reining 2020
The lineup includes incredible Quarter Horse stallions with enviable records of success as the sires of top moneywinning offspring. Among them is the “11-Million-Dollar Sire,” Wimpys Little Step. A 2011 inductee into the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Hall of Fame, he was the 2002 NRHA Open Futurity Champion (with the highest composite score in history) and the 2002 Congress Open Reining Futurity Champion. Among his many champions, Wimpys Little Step sired the only backto-back NRHA Futurity, NRBC, and NRHA Derby winner, Wimpys Little Chic, the all-time NRHA leading money winner. The entire stallion roster is loaded with similar quality and is complemented with a strong group of up-andcoming junior stallions. To expose the new sires to a good cross-section of mares, Silver Spurs often packages a free breeding to one of them with a purchased breeding to another, proven stallion. Among the most accomplished stallions is the purebred Arabian, double-United States National Champion, What It Takes (GA N Khredible x Sonoma Sensation).
Take A Spin, by What it Takes, multiple Champion Half-Arabian Reining Horse.
Winner of the 2005 U.S. National Champion Reining Futurity and the 2007 U.S. National Champion Open Reining titles, What It Takes is a leading sire of purebred and Half-Arabian reining horses. From 74 registered foals to date, he has sired an incredible percentage of national winners with 15 national championships and 14 reserve national championships between them, mostly in the reining division. Among them is the three-time national champion Whata Doc Bar TR, whose dam is a Quarter Horse mare, Smokums Miss Doc Bar. Whata Doc Bar is the 2019 U.S. National Champion H/A Reining Rookie Non-Pro AATR, 2019 U.S. National Champion H/A Reining NonPro AATR Primetime Rookie, and 2014 U.S. National Champion H/A Reining Futurity winner, with a 2016 Reserve National Champion H/A Open Reining Derby crown as well. With its incomparable collection of stallions, first-class training facilities, and generous futurity programs, Silver Spurs Equine can satisfy the needs of all breeders, owners, and enthusiasts of the reining horse. ■

DON DELONGPRÉ
(1941-2019)
Noted Arabian horseman and breeder Don DeLongpré passed away on December 20th of natural causes.
Born in Pasadena, California, Don spent his early childhood here on Montana Street. According to his daughter, Dedee, his lifelong passion for horses was already evident in Don as a young pre-teenager. “My dad used to love to tell me that as a child he would save his money until he could put together enough to rent a horse,” Dedee says. “He would bring the horse, or pony, back to his house and keep him in the backyard for the day, grooming, riding and enjoying his favorite pastime. It was his best childhood memory.” Later, Don was seriously involved with the local FFA, and when a teenager, his family moved to Covina, California, about 20 miles away. As a young man, Don attended Pierce College in Los Angeles, California, eventually going on to California State Polytechnic University in Pomona. He studied human nutrition in college but eventually switched over to Animal Husbandry when his passion for horses got the best of him. During this time, he got a job riding Saddlebred horses and gradually began to meet and work with California Arabian owners and breeders like Frank McCoy, Frisco Mari and others. At Cal Poly he trained Arabians at the horse unit at the behest of department head Norman Dunn. There Don met his wife-to-be Judy, whose parents raised Arabian horses nearby in Whittier. Norm Dunn was the best man at Don and Judy’s wedding. Soon the couple was training horses locally for Bert and Ruth Husband and other noted Californians and they began to make a name at the National level. In addition to his training barn and several years working for Gainey Arabians, Don began breeding Arabian horses on his own. Breeding was to become something he would work at proudly with Arabians, dogs, and eventually a variety of animals, both rare and ordinary, for the rest of his life. Beginning with the imported Polish stallion, *Eter, Don was associated with many exceptional Arabian show and breeding horses, like Mi Toska+++, Khara Mia+, Khari++ and, of course, the legendary Barbary+++. Don’s marriage to Judy ended in the early 1970s. In 1975 Don formed an Arabian horse partnership with Broadway producer and Arabian horse breeder Mike Nichols and moved to Connecticut with everything he owned, his crew and horses. Richard Petty joined the Nichols-DeLongpré operation soon afterward. Meanwhile back East, Don’s work with the young stallion Barbary+++ began to bear fruit and Barbary+++ soon became a national sensation, both as a show horse and as a sire. Six years later, the NDL partnership, the horses and the sales that had become an annual event for the farm moved back to California. Don brought in members of his family to work and help at Nichols-DeLongpre, California, including his parents, Millie and Jim Hanna, and his sister Pamela. Don remained in
Don and Barbary. California for many years with his *Eter and Barbary+++ show horses, his life partner Richard Petty, his renowned Arabian breeding program, his clientele and his world class stallion syndications. By the late 1980s, Don had become a noted and famous horseman, not only for his Arabian bloodstock and his ground-breaking apprentice programs that mentored young trainers and horsemen, but also for the horse breeding operations he was instrumental in designing and orchestrating for breeders like Dave and Gail Liniger of Maroon Fire Arabians. In 1997 Don DeLongpré was awarded the APAHA Breeder of the Year Award, something he was to treasure wholeheartedly for the rest of his life. Don is survived by his daughter Dedee DeLongpré Johnston, her husband, Luke Johnston and their son, Eli Johnston of Winston Salem, North Carolina. He also leaves his life partner of 42 years, International USEF Judge, Richard Petty of Jacksonville, Oregon. Richard Petty, in memory of Don, offers a favorite quote from Rudyard Kipling … “This is a brief life, but in its brevity, it offers us some splendid moments; some meaningful adventures.” Dedee notes that her father wished to have his ashes scattered in the Pacific Ocean near Santa Barbara, a place that he dearly loved. Thinking that there are many who loved and found joy in their friendship with Don and that they may wish to express respect for his passing, Dedee offers this suggestion: in lieu of flowers and cards Don would have appreciated a token in his memory to The Livestock Conservancy, www. livestockconservancy.org, a nonprofit organization focused on preserving and promoting rare breeds, also known as “heritage breeds” of livestock.

irst on judge Michael Byatt’s card, HDF Barcellona was recently named 2019
Silver Champion Junior Mare of Brazil. But her uniqueness and her class win a day earlier, seen worldwide on live feed, had already rocketed her to global awareness. On that July day in Brazil, Barcellona’s stylish elegance caught the eye of sculptor Carol Fensholt Nierenberg and her husband, Stuart Nierenberg, Silver Box Studios/Silver Box Southwest (Carefree, AZ), who were ringside, and who purchased her on the spot. She now resides at Royal Arabians (Scottsdale, AZ), and will be shown by Rodolfo Guzzo. But long before any of that, HDF Barcellona had wowed her breeders, Rodrigo da Silva Faias and Murilo Kammer; and Rodolfo Guzzo too, who bred her sire, Rodrigo’s HDF Lugano, and reveres her dam, Murilo’s MFA Exoticaa. When Barcellona was born, “We were over the moon!” says Murilo, who credits partner Rodrigo for selecting Exoticaa for his stallion. “As soon as Barcellona was on the ground, Rodrigo wrote me and said, ‘We just got something out of this world!’ I immediately went to his farm, and yes –– indeed we had!”

Every time we present her at Royal Arabians, people are amazed. They go crazy –– even when she’s just standing quietly and naturally. OPINION OF LARA AMES
Our Future Trainers If you read my columns or we chat at shows, you probably know that I spend a lot of time considering the future of the Arabian horse breed and what we can do to improve it. We need more newcomers, I say, and we need more breeders too (or else, where will we get the horses to sustain and grow our community?). One thing many of us, myself included, rarely mention is we need to attract more trainers as well. Since many trainers look like they’re doing very well, it may seem natural to be a little skeptical that we need to help with that. But think about it. While it’s true that trainers won’t have jobs if there are not horses to train and owners to foot the bills, it is also true that if we don’t have trainers, who’s going to bridge the gap from owning a horse to showing one? Showing is an important part of our business. About now, you may be thinking, “Are you kidding? Trainers can be rock stars. There will always be people who want to be rock stars.” I don’t know about that. Yes, some trainers are rock stars, but the majority of them are just solid, working horsemen and women who enable you and me to get into the ring with our horses and compete, hopefully with distinction. Nothing is ever guaranteed for them except that they will have to be good to be successful, and they will work very long hours in a barn or on the road. In today’s economy, facing the challenges any horse breed faces, we do not have a long line of people waiting in the wings, and just like horses and new owners, we will need a steady supply in the future. We also will need them to have experience at their craft. What can we do to ensure that this happens? Work now to see that we have knowledgeable horse people to train our horses in years to come. Specifically, I’d like to see us be more active in attracting and nurturing young trainers. Let’s put more energy, and yes, more funding, into getting new people into training. We have many talented amateurs in our breed who will be choosing what to do with their lives; if they have the horsemanship and work ethic to do it, why couldn’t training be a viable alternative for them?
However, common sense tells us that it’s hard for a new young trainer to compete against an older, more established one. In the old days, there was an apprentice/ assistant practice that allowed new trainers to work for and learn from more experienced horsemen, but today’s economics make that hard. We need ideas: how can we make it possible for established trainers to mentor and help the newcomers? In addition, I’d like to see more owners give these new trainers a chance. One day, they will be the leading lights of the show ring—but not if they don’t have clients in the beginning to support them. If we don’t do something, I’m afraid we’ll see a situation in the future where the industry is pretty much controlled by a few large farms or training barns, and that doesn’t serve anyone well. We need the competition that a large and diverse training corps brings. At the same time, we need to be clear to young trainers that the commitment to train horses is not a 9:00 to 5:00, Monday through Friday, proposition. In the beginning, they will have to learn how to keep their business going, which often means resisting overstaffing in favor of doing a lot of the labor themselves. It’s not easy. And we have to create an arena in which they can get their feet wet. To me, that means re-energizing our Class A and pumping up the regionals. This benefits everyone, because it better serves the Arabian horse owners who are not interested in the highest level of competition, but would rather show locally, with a regional show their ultimate goal. Right now, those people do not receive the recognition they are due as the grassroots of our breed. In short, we need to remember that the trainers we know now will not be training forever. If we don’t provide for the future—which will require enlisting their help, as well as the help of current owners—we won’t be equipped to reach our goals when the time comes.

LEADERS OF THE TIMES
Khadraj NA Jerland Arabians’ Blessing Evermore
by
CATHERINE COLE FERANDELLI
It was a magical year. Having followed him literally from infant-hood, Larry Jerome remembers 2007 with credulous clarity, being as it was the year he acquired Khadraj NA. “Yes, Khadraj drew me into his life 16 years before I was gifted with the opportunity to own him,” Larry recalls. “Even as a youngster, it was obvious to me that Khadraj possessed exceptional physical prowess, athletic ability, and exuded a natural charisma that just cannot be taught. I yearned to have Khadraj but never dreamed it would be possible. Turns out that dreams really can come true!” Awarded the youngest-ever Brazil National Champion Colt while at his dam’s side, Khadraj (*Ponomarev x Khatreena NA, by *Padron) was attracting attention world-wide before he was weaned! The Brazilian accolades didn’t stop there, with 2-year-old Khadraj awarded another Brazilian National Championship in 1993. This stunning chestnut colt was clearly going places. The late Rose Taylor, owner of the famed R-A Aloha Arabians knew Khadraj was the stallion to complete her progressive breeding program. For Rose, Khadraj represented the perfect combination of classic Russian, Polish and Crabbet bloodlines. A deal was reached and Khadraj made his way to the States. Many agree young Khadraj’s show career at this point was stellar enough. Still, after having won some impressive halter prizes in the States, Khadraj was started as a performance horse, revealing a phenomenal talent for western pleasure. Shown by his trainer and lifelong friend Greg Harris, Khadraj brought home the roses at Canadian Nationals and many a regional championship. Owner/ Amateur Devon Benbrook successfully showed Khadraj during this time too, revealing that he was beautiful, athletic and happy to show with a trainer or an amateur on his back. In 2007, fate intervened when Larry learned that 16-year-old Khadraj was available for purchase. “Khadraj was building big fame as a sire; his offspring dominated prize wins at U.S and Canadian Nationals,” Larry smiles. “I felt privileged and enjoyment as a breeder, but our first meeting also revealed an intense connection and attraction. That was the biggest prize of all.” Larry expounds, “My biggest joy was just being around Khadraj, the horse. Seeing him put on his show to our mares in his daily pasture turnout was always a thrill. His emotions were always easily readable through intelligent expression. Khadraj was always proud, yet kind and fair. He and his stall mate, MPA Giovanni, were both
the proudest stallions you’ll ever meet and had a genuine liking and respect for each other. That’s a special stallion intelligence one cannot replicate.” Fast forward to 2019. To describe it, Larry says, “It was the best year, it was the worst year. We could see that Khadraj was slowing down. We began preparing for the end, all the while certain that he would tell us when it was time. We knew when the inimitable sparkle in his eyes flickered, we would be there.” In early October, when Khadraj was picking at his specially prepared hay with his eyes shut, grievously, Larry and all of Khadraj’s loved ones knew the time had come. Initially Larry shared Khadraj’s passing with only a few dear friends, while compiling a warm, touching video to be shown at U.S. Nationals. Proud Khadraj, showing his stuff, surrounded by his multitude of friends. Throughout the show in Tulsa, Khadraj’s inevitable presence remained front and center through his first- and second-generation progeny. Big wins included Jerland Farms’ double homebred bay stallion Kola J, U.S. National Champion Arabian Western Pleasure Junior Horse. 2015 Half-Arabian bay stallion Gin J and owner Holly Connnaker were Western Pleasure Maturity AAOTR Top Ten winners after having earned 2019 Canadian National Champion Half-Arabian Western Pleasure Junior Horse. Khadraj’s progeny graced all the show pens, proof positive that Khadraj lives on through his descendants. Forever grateful for his and Khadraj’s journey together, Larry says singer Ronny Milsaps’ verse describes Khadraj best, “You’re my sunshine day and night, oh what a difference you’ve made in my life.”

AWPA COVER STORY:
Avonlea Arabians’ Onyx A ... Western Pleasure’s Number One Living Leading Sire by Catherine Cole Ferandelli
A
rabian Western Pleasure horse breeders, trainers and competitors alike proclaim the AWPA (Arabian Western Pleasure Association) to be the benchmark organization by which one can see, assess and measure the very best the breed has to offer. With big payouts in AWPA Futurity and Maturity competitions, the challenge for all in the Arabian western pleasure industry is to produce, train and perform at the pinnacle of performance.
Atop the stallion list for such lofty breeding goals is Avonlea Arabians’ Onyx A. As of 2019, nine of his purebred and Half-Arabian sons and daughters have collectively won nearly $60,000 in AWPA prize payouts—all in only four years’ time! Avonlea Arabians harkens back to its beginnings as small breeders over 20 years ago. The same goals remain firmly in place: produce aesthetically beautiful, Arabian horse athletes who possess show ring charisma combined with a willing attitude. Willing attitude is defined by owners Anne (Keller), Richard and Gail Whitaker as being happy to enter the show pen as a Western Pleasure Futurity or Junior horse equally capable of competing with a professional or an amateur on board. And yes, this should be accomplished at the same horse show, be it a qualifying show or a national competition. Further, same horses ideally transition freely into a full western show bridle from a two-handed hackamore performance, again happily shown by pro and amateur alike.
Ar abian Horse Times | 4 | AW PA 2020
Anne describes showing Onyx as the ‘ultimate fairy tale’ stating, “It didn’t matter what age class, with what trainers, or if he was shown by an amateur, Onyx was a super star—not because of any of us, but because of him. We were the lucky ones who got to sit on his back! Onyx proved himself to be the consistent factor in his brilliant show career.” Turns out Onyx’s legacy didn’t stop there. Producing multiple western pleasure champions as the leading living sire reveals a lasting power that beacons further to a bright future for the Arabian western pleasure horse. Onyx has proven himself to cross well with several different purebred dam lines and Quarter Horse mares too. The results are attracting breeders across the board, all seeking that Onyx A good will, strength, carriage and charisma in their own future western pleasure champion. Avonlea’s Onyx son, stallion Slate A (x Psyanne A) exemplifies ‘all things Onyx A’, winning the 2016 title of National Champion Arabian Western Pleasure Futurity and 2018 AWPA Champion Western Pleasure Maturity AAOTR with Anne aboard. Onnesty (x SDA Lady Jabask), a 2013 gelding equally black as his sire, is currently the top money winning get, earning $15,000 as 2017 AWPA Arabian Futurity Reserve Champion at the U.S. Nationals. Nnoir A (x Psyanne A), the jet black homebred full sibling mare to Slate A is the second top winning get, earning $7,500 as 5th place winner in the 2016 AWPA Western Pleasure Futurity. Avonlea Arabians now stands both Onyx A and his son, Slate A. Anne enthuses, “Onyx and Slate both personify perfectly the philosophy we live by when breeding. That is, they speak volumes through their actions. Whether it’s a trainer like my husband JT, or friend Josh Quintus; an amateur rider or any of the other great western pleasure trainers, Onyx and his get love getting out in the show arena to perform, always putting their best forward. It does us proud to see Onyx’s legacy being carried forward to our mares and others whose owners seek the same journey of watching their babies thrive and bloom. We are eagerly anticipating Slate’s first babies growing up and carrying on the third generation for Onyx and Avonlea.”

WELCOME TO THE ARABIAN WESTERN PLEASURE ASSOCIATION The AWPA was formed in 2015, with the first Stallion Service Auction and Futurity classes being offered in 2016. Now in our fifth full year, the program continues to grow and exceed everyone’s expectations. While health concerns kept numerous entries from competing in the 2019 Maturity classes in Canada, the quality of the competition was very high. The U.S. National AWPA Futurity classes had more entries than ever, and it was incredibly exciting to have the purebred final be the first class out on the special Friday night slate of classes. A big THANK YOU to all of our sponsors who make these classes so special by offering exhibitor bags, a welcome party, awards and prize money! As we begin 2020, there are 100 stallions enrolled and over 300 in-utero mares nominated! We are so appreciative of each stallion owner who has supported the AWPA. This program is successful thanks to you and the committed mare owners who continue to breed and produce talented Western Pleasure prospects. The AWPA website lists information about each stallion and what breedings will be offered in the Auction. The 2020 AWPA Stallion Service Auction will be online through Arabian Horse Times March 5th-10th. Foals resulting from breedings purchased in the Auction are eligible for additional class prize money! Learn more about this on the AWPA Auction page in this brochure, or on the website. Looking forward to 2021, the only 4-year-olds eligible to compete in the U.S. National AWPA Futurity classes will be those who had in-utero mare nominations submitted by the end of 2016. Every year thereafter, the same rules will apply in that those entries wanting to show will have had to had in-utero mare nominations submitted five years prior. This is why enrolling your mares is so important! Mare nominations from each year can be found on the AWPA website. We would like to welcome the Arabian Horse Times as the new title sponsor of the Purebred Futurity & Maturity classes. They have committed to a 5-year sponsorship, which is fantastic! The Half-Arabian Futurity & Maturity will continue to be sponsored by Equine Athlete Veterinary Services, for which we are extremely grateful! We encourage you to patronize all of the sponsors who support the AWPA. Thank you again to all of you who support the AWPA with stallion enrollments, mare nominations and class entries, as well as training and promoting young western horses. There are great things ahead for all of us! The AWPA Board

• • • •
Stallions may be enrolled annually for the fee of $1,000 by the deadline of December 1st of the year preceding the stallion auction. For example, in order to have a stallion enrolled for the 2021 year, the paperwork and payment must be submitted by December 1, 2020. Nomination forms can be found at arabianwesternpleasure.com. Stallion owners must complete the Stallion Nomination Agreement Form & Auction Purchasers Agreement, and provide a breeding contract and photo by the deadline of December 1st of the year preceding the stallion auction. (December 1, 2020, for the nomination year of 2021)
•
•
One (1) breeding must be donated to the AWPA Stallion Service Auction. A stallion owner may choose to donate two (2) breedings, one Purebred and one Half-Arabian, for their $1,000 nomination fee. The stallion owner agrees to be the purchaser of the auction donated breeding if it does not sell at auction, for the minimum bid of $1,000. Stallion owners receive one ‘Auction’ breeding with their nomination. This breeding can be used on a mare of the stallion owner’s choice or can be sold by the Stallion owner to anyone the stallion owner chooses and for any fee the stallion owner chooses. An in-utero Mare Nomination must be submitted by December 31st with payment of $100.
Stallions who sire the Champions in the 2020 AWPA Purebred or Half-Arabian Futurity classes will receive a 2021 stallion enrollment at no charge.
In order for foals sired by an AWPA-nominated stallion to be eligible to participate in the Futurity and Maturity classes, they must be nominated in-utero by submitting a Mare Nomination Form. Mares must be nominated before the end of the breeding/auction year for a $100 fee. December 31, 2020, for this year. Nomination forms can be found at arabianwesternpleasure.com.
OFFSPRING NOMINATION
•
• •
For every three (3) stallions one stallion owner nominates, they will receive a fourth stallion nomination at no charge.
MARE NOMINATION
•
•
From 2016 through 2020, offspring of that years AWPA nominated stallion are eligible to compete in the AWPA Futurity & Maturity classes. Beginning in 2021, the ONLY four-year-olds allowed to compete in the U.S. National AWPA Futurity will strictly be those who were nominated in-utero by December 31st of their breeding year.
• • • • •
Any mare that has been bred to an AWPA enrolled stallion can be nominated. However, the stallion must have been enrolled in the type of class the foal would compete in. For instance, if a stallion only offers a Purebred breeding in the program, then Half-Arabian foals would not be eligible, and Mare Nominations would not be accepted. The breeding does not have to be purchased in the AWPA Stallion Service Auction.
An AWPA Class Entry Form must be submitted to the AWPA by the show entry deadline. The form can be found at arabianwesternpleasure.com. The AWPA class entry fee is $700. All other entry and office fees charged by National shows must be paid directly to the show.

The Full Expericence of Arabian Horses Welcome to the eighth edition of ENVISION magazine, a publication the Arabian horse community has put together specifically to introduce those of you unfamiliar with this breed to some of the many things that make life with horses, and especially the Arabian horse, truly life changing. Our goal with this magazine is that we hope to stir your imagination to Envision a new endeavor with Arabian horses for yourself, in any one of the myriad of ways that this truly versatile and oldest breed of horse offers. Whether through a lesson program, that may or may not include riding, a visit just to meet and talk to one of the many people listed in this magazine, or virtually any riding endeavor that piques your interest, there is something for everyone that you can get through interaction with this breed. We hope you enjoy this introduction and that when you are done, you can envision yourself experiencing and learning about the Arabian horse.

The Arabian Horse Association, with members throughout the United States and Canada was proud to present their entry in the 2020 Rose Parade, comprised of local Arabian horse owners from the Southern California and Arizona area. The theme has touched our members so strongly that they developed an entry for the parade. The Power of Hope exemplifies the power of the Arabian horse and our association with Leukemia Lymphoma Society Warrior Horses for Warrior Kids program which links youth battling cancer with horses; “Warrior horses” that help them fight their battle. Walking with the group is the program creator Ryan Melendez. In its brief three years of existence and born from the life-threatening cancer battle waged by Ryan and his brilliance in recognizing the part a horse can play to help children who are also battling the horrible disease, the program has matched many horses with their warrior kids. Also walking with the group was Dylan Cavender our latest warrior kid match, with his matched horse Tuffy, and the Warrior horse that was matched with Kimi, who sadly lost her battle, but was helped throughout her time by her relationship with her beloved “Pez.” ~ Marshal, Nancy Harvey, President of Arabian Horse Association

Cover Story:
The Power of Hope Arabian Horses at the 2020 Rose Bowl Parade By Jenn Trickey Pasadena resident and long-time Arabian horse enthusiast, Katie Russell is no stranger to the legendary Rose Bowl Parade that wows crowds of over 750,000 people across the five miles of Southern California—the pageantry, history and pride viewed by millions through T.V. sets New Year’s Day morning. After all, when you live in the hills that line the Rose Bowl stadium, New Year’s Day is more than just January one. However, 2020 was even more monumental for Katie and eight others. They were no longer spectators but got to enjoy the parade from the other side … the in-side, marching down the streets of Pasadena, waving to the thousands who camped out for their place on the tour. It had been since 2013 that Arabian horses joined the ranks of the decorated event, so when Katie discussed with Arabian Horse Association President Nancy Harvey, about applying once again, to get the Arabian horses back into the parade, the two went to work. Both on the Arabian Horse MDP (Marketing, Development and Promotion) Committee, Nancy and Katie began their quest by submitting the petition with around 100 other equestrian applications in hopes to be selected as one of the 17 equestrian groups approved. Nancy had some experience with the process, having been in the parade seven times prior, but with only three divisions of entry: floats, marching bands and equestrian units, it would be difficult. The theme of the 131st Rose Parade was Power of Hope and could not have worked better in the scheme of things, as the Arabian horse community is proud of their own Warrior Horses for Warrior Kids program, founded by cancer survivor Ryan Melendez. The Arabian horse community joined their hearts around Ryan as he created a fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society that matches children with cancer to Arabian horses giving healing hearts and emotional support to the kids. The power Arabian horses have to connect with the human spirt is phenomenal to those who know them, but this was a stage where they could show off their shine and that they did by receiving premier spot number five of 87 entries and first of the 17 equestrian groups in the parade! All nine participants applying had to write bios talking about their equestrian unit and explain how they felt this program and horse supported the theme, “Power of Hope.” The Warrior Horses for Kids couldn’t be more perfect in supporting that theme. Arabian horses in previous years had been represented in the Rose Parade shown in traditional Native costume, but this year was a departure in showcasing more versatility while being featured as western pleasure and carriage horses. Shania Twain’s horse was proudly one of those featured ridden by multi-National Champion trainer Natalie Jones. The pride of the Arabian horse is a characteristic all who know them find remarkable, and in this case couldn’t have made us the ones prouder! Ar abian Horse Times | 3 | ENV ISION • #8

NATALIE JONES & WISHMAKER JCA
CINDY REID & AFIRES GUNS N ROSES
KATIE RUSSELL & TUFFY
My horse Lapaz NA, “Pez” as he is known to most, is truly my Heart horse. In recent years, Pez has been a great ambassador for the Arabian breed, teaching young kids how to ride and compete in local and regional shows. He has a quiet and calm soul which allows even the timidest child or person to experience the Arabian horse.
I was introduced to the Arabian horse as a small child by my mother who was an Arabian horse trainer for many years. I’ve always loved the Arabian ... they are so smart, willing and versatile. I won the junior English at the Scottsdale All Arabian Horse Show when I was 4 years old and I have never looked back. I’ve been blessed enough to win 50+ National Championships in my career so far, and I hope to continue earning more in the upcoming years.
I was fortunate enough to be involved with Arabian horses from a very young age. After high school I attended Stephens College as an Equestrian Science major and then worked as an apprentice on some wonderful California Arabian horse farms. My path diverged a bit and I went into law enforcement, spending 20 years as a police officer. My interest in Arabian horses moved from actually competing myself, to becoming a horse show steward, an official who safeguards the welfare of the horse at competitions. I have been a licensed steward for 27 years and have officiated at many Arabian shows, including the U.S. National Championships on numerous occasions.
The Rose Parade is the pinnacle, the brass ring of parades. There is no better parade in the world! I love the Arabian horse and want to share them with the world. As a life-long resident of Southern California, I’ve witnessed the Rose Parade on TV and from Colorado Blvd. I have always been in awe of the horses and riders participating in the parade. I have dreamt of being one of them. My parade horse, Tuff Act To Follow (Tuffy) is a United States National Champion Western Pleasure horse. He is beautiful and dignified, and is the first horse my husband, Joe and I ever bred.
Pez was matched with a very special little girl named Kimi, who was able to come see Pez quite frequently with her dad when she was feeling good. Pez was Kimi’s hope. Pez was something she could look forward to seeing during her battle with cancer that robbed her of the majority of her childhood. She sadly lost her battle with cancer but will remain in our hearts forever.
The Arabian horse has always been there for me with unconditional love, no matter what. You can have a terrible day and all you have to do is spend time with them and look into their beautiful eyes and everything is ok.
GAYLE PÉNA & PRINCE Hes All Heart he has ridden the Tournament of Roses Parade with The Versatile Arabians twice previously. “Prince,” as I call him, is 21, and has been a show horse, as well as a trail horse. I’ve had him since he was a weanling and will keep him forever.
The Arabian horse is a special animal, known for endurance, refinement, strength and unmatchable beauty. The original Arabian horses were prized by Bedouin families and actually brought into their family tents. Arabians are quick to learn, willing and sensitive. They are wonderful family horses. All of these traits brought me to my first Arabian in 1969 and keep me still involved with the breed. There is no horse like an Arabian.

We sold Tuffy so he could pursue what was destined to be a phenomenal show career. Years later, we were elated when the opportunity arose to bring Tuffy back into our lives. We were fortunate to get him back to his home for life. The “power of hope” presided, and now a lifetime dream may come true with Tuffy in the 2020 Rose Parade! He deserves this honor, and I would love to share Tuffy and the versatile Arabian horse with the world!

I have enjoyed showing, breeding my horses and raising new generations of these wonderful creatures for decades. In addition to ownership, I became involved with the governance of the National association, and I am the current President of the Arabian Horse Association with a membership of just under 20,000.
I grew up in Southern California. The Rose Parade was part of my life until I moved away at the age of 30. My dad, as a young boy was in the Rose Parade as an elf on a float with Mickey Rooney! Every year, we would get up early, bundle up for the cold, and make our way with folding chairs and ladders to the parade route.
Arabians are Warrior horses who were originally bred to protect their family in the harsh desert. They have a wonderful personality and great intelligence. The Arabian horse has been featured in movies, books, and have been the horse of little girls’ dreams.
Horses have always been my inspiration and my motivation through life. I grew up in a disadvantaged household; we barely had enough money to get by. I dreamed as a child of becoming a veterinarian. I stayed focused on those dreams even when the dreams seemed too big.
My horse was originally to be my Patagonia X, “Poodle,” who was my ride/drive for two of my parade runs. Now 22 years old, Poodle has a new job bringing hope to a wonderful woman who lost her beloved horse in 2017. Phyllis is over 70 and has had some trouble adjusting to moving into the later phase of her life. With Poodle in her life, she has found hope and new love. This is truly what the Arabian Horse does best. The wonderful horse, who excels in Endurance named Rushcreek Freedom filled in for Poodle, who was unable to participate.
We also grew up near Cal Poly University in Pomona and the famous Kellogg Arabian Ranch. How fortunate I was to be able to attend that very same school and be involved in the Arabian horseprogram. The power of hope pushed me to own my first horse and to build a life in the equine industry. First you dream, then you hope, and then you find a way to make it happen! That’s the power of hope.
I got my first Arabian when I was 13. He wasn’t a tall, dark and handsome stallion that I dreamed about, but he and I did everything together: camping, showing, volunteering with the Sherriff’s department, and riding in the Tournament of Roses Parade three times! My big black gelding, Raqharo Flair, too, has done everything I have asked, adding endurance riding and again riding in the Rose Parade.
Once I graduated vet school and had the opportunity to ride horses again. I purchased Just In Kayce, “Justin,” and had no idea the impact one single horse could have on my life and others in the community. He became that horse that I always dreamed of as a child.
The Arabian horse I will be driving in the parade is the granddaughter of one of those Kellogg Arabians that first inspired me. Dreams really do come true!
Leeza Gibbons & Mark Steines KTLA-5 Interview
My latest horse, Tehachapi Khan, a buckskin nicknamed Ty, has been a lot of fun, teaching me how to work cattle, and is an incredible asset for the San Bernardino County Sherriff’s Department Search and Rescue unit.
Justin and I ... have volunteered for the San Bernardino Sheriff Department; became members of the Equestrian Patrol Unit; volunteer in community events; and joined the West Valley Mounted Posse, participating in Search and Rescue efforts for the county. It all has been truly rewarding because Justin loves to get petted. For me, the feel of the horse gave me the biggest hope that life would eventually work out, and I would love to keep one child’s dream alive or have an impact on one person’s life from the touch of Justin’s hair or his soft nose.
HoofbeatZ USA Located in Cave Creek, Arizona, HoofbeatZ USA is a unique curriculumbased program. It is designed for students receiving an equine “edutainment” experience through various rotating stations. This brainchild of Eileen Verdieck in partnership with Mr. Chris Cook, President of WHC (Wild Horsemanship Center) in Ocala, FL, as well as other like-minded investors, is an outreach program designed to bring horses and humans together in a new affordable, entertaining and safe venue.
Ar abian Horse Times | 6 | ENV ISION • #8
The HoofbeatZ USA model is designed to introduce large numbers of newcomers to the equestrian world, and promote on going horsemen as well. HoofbeatZ USA employs and specifically trains its staff to focus on the advancement of fun and education.
Holistic Approach:
Learn so much more than just how to ride. Experiences include mental and physical development, how to safely handle horses on the ground, horse care, and developing a strong, independent seat.
Life Lessons:
Life lessons: Horses mirror our conscious and unconscious character. Here at HoofbeatZ USA, we are focused on developing qualities that will serve our students in all aspects of life including empowerment, mindfulness and empathetic leadership.
Cirriculum-Based:
Our structured program allows our students to grow and develop with measurable benchmarks that are demonstrated at the pace of each individual, using both theory and practical skills. More difficult concepts are introduced as the student progresses. These riding and horsemanship benchmarks provide a strong foundation for success and allow students to confidently pursue their goals in any equine endeavor. Ar abian Horse Times | 7 | ENV ISION • #8
Accessible:
The horse industry can be intimidating, costly and confusing for a newcomer to navigate. HoofbeatZ USA takes out the guesswork by providing a low-cost, low-commitment introduction to the horse world and a structured program that can take you from beginner to professional and anywhere in between.
Safe:
HoofbeatZ USA’s patented experiential learning stations include EZ Ride, Speak Horse, Safe Ride, General Ride and our Mechanical Horse Simulator. Our program enhances safety by allowing new students to find their balance by
progressing through the stations, developing a secure and confident seat. More importantly, we teach equine psychology, allowing students to understand and anticipate equine behavior. This develops trust and partnership between horse and rider, encouraging a willingness and enthusiasm in both.
Fun:
HoofbeatZ USA specializes in “edutainment,” making learning about horses so fun that both children and adults can’t wait to discover more. With unique stations every time you visit, there is always a new skill to hone and a new game to play along the journey of learning.
Ar abian Horse Times | 8 | ENV ISION • #8
Eileen has spent 46 years in the Equine industry. Her career has spanned the globe, with marketing and sales being her main focus. Eileen developed HoofbeatZ 15 years ago, originally launching it in the Middle East where it successfully touched the lives of over 2,000 newcomers.
Speak Horse:
Our on-the-ground horsemanship station where we focus on teaching students the language and psychology of the horse. Students learn how to form a true relationship with the horse while developing awareness of body language and coordination. They learn movements on the ground to direct the horse and learn how their movements affect the horse.
Horse Care:
An on-the-ground educational station where students learn basic safety around horses. Also includes learning basic stable management, grooming techniques, proper saddling and bridling, identifying horse anatomy, colors and markings and much, much more.
Horse Sense:
Because the horse world is about so much more than riding, this classroom-focused station introduces students to all the ways being passionate horsemen and women can help them in everyday life. Students will learn equine theory and general equine knowledge. Topics are taught with the help of games, simulators, and hands- on experience. Students learn in a fun and challenging atmosphere where the lesson is tailored to each student’s existing knowledge. Ar abian Horse Times | 9 | ENV ISION • #8
Complete Ride:
In this series of stations, the art of proper horse riding is explored. During mounted sessions, emphasis is placed on developing the foundation of a strong, balanced, and secure seat, mounted safety, confidence, and coordination. There are three core components of riding at HoofbeatZ USA:
~ EZ Ride
Students work in a round ring, riding specially trained horses following the instruction of a handler in the center of the ring, without the use of reins and without needing to worry about directing their horses. EZ Ride also includes sessions on the Mechanical Horse Simulator, which allows for controlled variation in a safe and progressive way. This unique combination allows students to be fast-tracked toward developing a secure, independent seat while working through a series of physically demanding exercises. This station focuses on the rider’s balance.
~ Safe Ride
Building on the foundation established in Speak Horse and EZ Ride, students advance their riding using body language and focus to direct the horse. A rope halter is used to support the rider’s focus to allow them to further develop a seat independent of the reins. The goal in Safe Ride is to combine the balance skills learned in EZ Ride with the control movements and focus learned in Speak Horse to direct the horse while riding.
~ General Ride
Builds on concepts learned in Speak Horse, Safe Ride and EZ Ride, with a focus on learning the foundation for refinement riding. Students ride and control a horse freely, with the use of saddle and bridle. This station is a continuous progression of riding skills moving into advanced maneuvers including proper collection and suppleness of both horse and rider.

No “kidding around!” Take a sneak peek into this creative Adult Horse Camp hosted by long-time Arabian horse enthusiast Lori Foster of Chicago, Illinois; an example of how enjoying Arabian horses can bring people closer together at any age! With support for the idea and being fortunate enough to have several horses at her home that are amateur friendly and nationally competitive, last year Lori Foster decided that the Arabian horse industry needed an Adult Amateur Camp. She hosted the first camp in April, not having any idea of how it would go off. Four campers that ride with a farm in Ohio plus some local Arabian people signed up. With the help of two instructors, Lisa Jo White and Terri Delbridge, the itinerary included riding twice on Friday and Saturday with the campers deciding if they wanted to ride the same horse each time or switch it up. To her surprise, they all wanted to ride the same horse so they could see their improvement (which, by the way, was pretty amazing).

Also included was “Horseback Yoga” and a regular yoga class; lectures on horse; people and dog nutrition; makeup tips for the ring; massages; arts and crafts; and of course, time by the fire pit for socializing. All meals were provided, and the campers stayed at Foster’s home (with the addition of a rented camper due to the higher than expected participation rate). “Summer Camp” (or as it was labeled, Season Two), utilized Tom Thiesen and Terri Delbridge as instructors, and Adequan generously sponsored the event. Due to its popular demand, Foster will be hosting two more camps in 2020.

A BIG IN TULSA, OKLAHOMA Thanks to a couple of great members of the Arabian horse community, Arabian Horses For Humanity “Salute” made an appearance at the 2019 U.S. National Championship show in Tulsa. Christine and Charles Rickart provided his transportation from MN and we were so glad they did because this statue has to be seen in person to really appreciate the detailed work that went into its creation. When commissioned by Region 10, the artists were given his name and his mission—Salute would represent the valuable resource of equine assisted therapy for veterans. And their design is everything we could have hoped for and then some. From the tip of his nose to his tail, the four artists responsible, Deneena Hughes, Tracie Thompson, Jerusha Steinert and Nanci Fulmek, used every inch available to tell that story—a story of honor and respect and hope.
Program Update Written by Kathy Troxler Photos by Michael Troxler
Their design successfully combines the natural realistic beauty of the horse with powerful imagery and creative symbolism. At first glance the viewer sees a gorgeous bay horse, so realistic that one could be forgiven for expecting those flared nostrils Once you were the machine… to snort as he surveyed the show grounds. Powerful and strong, moving in a storm of order and chaos, bravery and fear … Fueled by honor, saluted as the brave ones. But courage looks different now … And strength must be borrowed where it cannot be found. Amid all the things that were taken with rough hands, Here find peace spoken to all your broken pieces ... The warm breath of hope telling you it is safe to feel again, that yours is a soul worth fighting for. Here find light that pushes back the looming darkness … Reminding you beauty still exists, calling you to live again. Here find quiet strength that humbly shares your burden … Graciously bowing its head to salute the courage it takes to heal. Salute--Deneena Hughes
But, just step up a bit closer and your eye is led from one intriguing visual to another. They’ve combined subtle images of the American flag glowing along his flanks and traditional military insignia and crests twined along his mane. In a truly bold move, they brilliantly included mechanical elements on the legs. Stated in the artist’s design statement “symbolizing the juxtaposition of the military machine bound up within flesh, blood, and bone, as well as honoring those veterans who have lost so much more than just limbs.” To see two of the coolest elements, you have to get really up close and personal with Salute. If you get a chance to see Salute in person, check out his right eye and you’ll see something special—the image of a saluting soldier. However, if you have to wait your turn to check out his eyes, not to worry, go check out his tail! Flowing down his ebony tail are words painted in gold. Words that you might not realize are part of a bigger whole—a poem written by Deneena Hughes specifically for this statue and bearing the same name. A poem whose words speak of bravery, honor, courage and hope.
