Comments From The Publisher Friday Night At The U.S. Nationals It’s not a good idea to wish your life away; it’s much better to enjoy each day as it comes. But, sometimes I have trouble with that at the U.S. Nationals. I cannot wait for the final Friday night (this year, October 25). It is “Big Money” night!

How big is “big”? We’ll lead off with the AWPA Arabian Horse World $100,000 Western Pleasure Futurity and close the evening with the AEPA Arabian Horse Times $100,000 English Pleasure Futurity. In between, we’ll watch the AHPA Royal Arabians $75,000 Hunter Pleasure Futurity, as well as the Arabian Breeding Senior Mares Championship. That’s a total of $275,000 in prize money on offer for young horses—the faces of the future, the ones we expect to see for years to come—along with one of the most prestigious halter awards there is.

Who wants to miss that?

Okay, I agree, money isn’t everything. What it is, however, is an attraction that brings out the top horses in the country, so if you want to beat the best competition in your division, this is where you need to go. That should make for some over-the-top, hard-to-forget performances!

Since Nationals itself attracts the best, you can say that the money classes offer the “best of the best” of what we’ll be seeing in years to come. And that may be why, on that night, the Ford Truck Arena is electric. There is a lot of energy in the building. I’m not the only one who can’t wait for Friday night. There is a lot on the line for everyone in the ring, which makes it extraexciting for everyone in the audience.

This is a time to turn off the live feed at the stalls, take some extra time on getting all dressed up (it’s a particular sign of respect for the horses and riders who are “on stage,” as well as a way to feel special about what we’re going to witness), and head for the Ford Truck Arena. Let’s celebrate this great breed and all that it has to offer!

by COLLEEN SCOTT Athletic, beautiful, structured and good-minded ... those are the things Larry Jerome, Jerland Farms, insists upon in his breeding program. “The whole package is what it takes to be successful in today’s Arabian world,” he says.

One way to ensure that, is to rely on what history has demonstrated. Going back decades, one can point to certain bloodlines that consistently produced the “whole package.” Names like Padron, Bay-Abi, Raffon, Bey Shah, Huckleberry Bey, Gazon, Khemosabi, Bay El Bey and more recently, Padrons Psyche and Magnum Psyche. If there

has always been an old soul with a youthful arrogance that speaks of selfconfidence and pride,” he says. “Breeders, trainers and enthusiasts continue to gravitate towards Kola J.” Breeding horses like Kola J is the culmination of more than 50 years of very thoughtful breeding decisions. From his first brush with the Arabian horse world as a child, Larry has been what you might call a committed enthusiast: committed to learning as much as he could about breeding, committed to identifying good bloodlines, and committed to creating a breeding program second to none.

Larry’s introduction to Arabians began with visits to the Burton Arabian Farm and to Ross Arabians. At Burtons, he was enamored with Gazon, and at Ross Arabians, Sinbad and Ambassador caught his attention. Larry understood a good pedigree when he saw one.

were an Arabian Horse Hall of Fame, they would all be in it.

Not surprisingly, when you look at the pedigree of Kola J (Khaja J x the MCA Magnum Gold daughter Jer-Koko), you find every single one of those names. That Kola J is the whole package, didn’t happen by accident.

Kola J is a prime example of what is strived for within the Jerland Farms’ breeding program. This handsome bay stallion recently returned to Stan White III’s Texas home base following a unanimous win in the Arabian Western Pleasure Junior Horse class at Region 14. Kola J’s 2019 show season was launched at Scottsdale in February, where he won his qualifying class out of 16 and then was named unanimous champion out of 35 in the championship class. The buzz this created was amazing, recounts both Larry and Stan.

“He’s an extremely powerful animal,” says Stan. “In addition to being really athletic, he wants to please you. He wants to do his job. Anything you ask of him, he’s going to do his very best and with full commitment.”

Stuart Vesty, who recently photographed Kola J, describes him this way, “From a distance, this horse is fantastic, and even better when you get up close. He’s as beautiful and correct untacked as he is when he’s loping around the arena. I think he’s raising the bar.”

Shown in-hand as a 2-year-old before he started his performance career, Kola J began by garnering multi Scottsdale top tens and culminated the year with a strong MAHB Championship amongst a number of rival National and Scottsdale Champions.

Handler Jeff Schall has high praise for the stallion, “Kola J is a rare combination of beauty and physicality with the heart of a champion. He

In the following years, Larry was still interested in Arabians, but also acquired Shetland ponies, Appaloosas, Belgians and Quarter Horses. His dream of breeding Arabians came to fruition when he was able to acquire Don Johnson’s herd, including the stallion Gavad (Gazon x Vadraff), who was a full brother to National Champion Raffon. With that acquisition, Larry began traveling down the road that would ultimately lead to Kola J, while meeting such industry influencers as Jay Stream, Sheila Varian, Wayne Newton, and many more. But it was his relationship with Hermann Blaser that would be the most significant.

Hermann and Larry most notably acquired the stallions Giovanni MPA and Khadraj NA. “Our philosophy remains steadfast: we must respect, admire and strive to tap into the versatility of our breed,” Larry says.

The road to producing Kola J, who appears to be every bit a western pleasure superstar, is the result of thoughtful, meticulous breeding decisions made over the course of many years, and the clear influence of Khadraj NA. According to Ty Wallis, DVM, “Kola J showcases the best attributes of three generations of Larry’s breeding program. Kola J’s quiet confidence and presence in the ring, athleticism and balance, are equally matched by his kind eye and genuine work ethic. He has been exciting to watch and a gentleman to be around.”

After the Western Pleasure Junior horse section winners were announced at the 2019 Scottsdale Show, a fellow competitor approached Larry and said, “There was the first section, and then there was the one you and I were in. I couldn’t even watch my own horse because I was watching yours.”

This is what is so gratifying to Larry—having a horse that is recognized for being balanced, correct, athletic and to top it all off, kind. “I’m as excited as I’ve ever been about being in the business of breeding Arabian horses.

“It is truly my belief that as time goes on, Kola J is going to leave a lasting legacy in the Arabian industry. He is worthy of being the rightful heir to his father, Khaja J and his grandfather, Khadraj NA.”

What are your personal pros and cons of judging on a selected panel specific to divisions/classes vs. judging a typical class A show where you’re judging all divisions/classes? I really don’t have any pros or cons. All shows are equally important, so as a judge, I commit myself to doing the BEST JOB I can in any situation. At the National level, I felt judging all divisions in the performance ring was quite nice and really enjoyable. This year I will just be judging the halter.

What small detail(s) do you feel are often overlooked to complete the overall presentation of a horse and rider/handler? The small details can certainly complete the overall picture of the horse presentation. I appreciate a horse that appears to have had daily good care, is well groomed and fit.

As a judge, what is something that you always appreciate seeing?

What is your biggest pet peeve? I love judging great quality horses.

I really don’t have any pet peeves.

What small detail(s) do you feel are often overlooked to complete the overall presentation of a horse and rider/handler? I feel at the national level, for the most part, everyone and their horses are close to 100%. Whether it is performance or halter, the overall presentation of horse and rider or handler is very important. A beautiful picture is easy to judge.

As a judge, what is something that you always appreciate seeing?

What is your biggest pet peeve? I appreciate the true beauty of Arabian horses. The quality is amazing at the national level and makes judging so enjoyable. One pet peeve is over showing in all divisions.

Trust your horse and their performance.

How do you respond when people accuse/assume the outcome of a class was political? This word “political” is VERY detrimental to the integrity of the breed and show arena.

What advice would you give to someone considering pursuing getting their judges card? I would tell them to attend the judging school to learn and experience what it is like to be a judge. Our judge’s commissioner, Stan Morey, and the EEC have done a great job with teaching and continuing education.

How do you respond when people accuse/assume the outcome of a class was political? I don’t. If an exhibitor, owner or breeder would like to discuss—after the show—my placings, I’m all for it. I strive to do the best job I can and pick the best horses in their respective division.

What advice would you give to someone considering pursuing getting their judges card? My advice would be simple, be ready to work hard and do the best job possible. Watch, listen and learn all you can and strive to get better every day—always keeping an open mind and a positive attitude.

OPINION OF LARA AMES

Above All, Arabians Are Fun As I write this, I am coming off the best weekend my mom and I have ever had at Cedar Ridge Arabians. It was our 50th Anniversary, and the first weekend of August, we had about 500 people come through the farm on Saturday afternoon. Our goal was not only to highlight our farm’s history, but more importantly, to envision our future—which meant that we wanted to enjoy not only old friends, but also other visitors, some of whom might become new friends.

One thing about Arabian horses is that they introduce you to people who appreciate them! We wanted everyone to enjoy the horses, and for novices and newcomers to learn more about the breed.

I encourage all farms to do this kind of thing. You don’t have to spend a fortune on it, and you can interest people in Arabian horses and all that our horses can do. The basics are just to put on a presentation, let your visitors pet a horse and maybe even ride a horse. (Check your insurance before you do, of course; although Arabians are amazingly human-oriented, it’s better to be safe.)

As I was watching our guests have such a good time at our celebration, I was struck again by what should be such a simple, taken-for-granted fact of our industry: no matter how serious about our breeding, showing, and training programs we are, we are in the entertainment business. Before newcomers can ever get to the “serious” stage of horse ownership—when no matter what, their favorite pastime is to be with their horses—they have to be attracted to participate. Usually that happens through their having fun with horses, and our breed offers a wide variety of ways they can do that. Once they are involved with Arabians, they will see why, for so many of us, the breed is a passion.

We want to own them, ride them, show them in halter, English, western, hunter, reining, dressage or what have you.

Whether you just want to trail ride or envision showing in any one of many disciplines, I’ll guarantee you that an Arabian can make your dream come true.

The key is bringing people in and educating them, and both of those missions depend on each person’s enjoying what he or she is doing. It’s up to us to make that easy for them to do, and as the city increasingly moves to the countryside, I think we’ll have more opportunities than ever to show non-horse people how much they might enjoy Arabians. We just have to start by making whatever we and they do fun. ■

What venue do you feel is the ideal location for a horse show? Why? The new equestrian center that is going up in Florida will be $1/2 a billion dollars once finished. Florida is the ideal location weather-wise in mid to late Oct. and we are also a destination location.

My staff and I work hard all year and tirelessly during a national show to be sure we are not only as prepared as we can be, but organized, and that the horses are 10,000% tip top PERFECT.

What is your earliest U.S. Nationals memory? As a trainer, one of my clients entering the ring and feeling nauseous. I talked her through it to get her in the ring without her actually getting sick off the side of her horse, and she ended up 3rd in her final.

What is the most important thing you would like your clients to know and understand during a show like U.S. Nationals? Enjoy! But keep thinking. Every step of your ride, think. Fill your mind with what you need to be doing so it’s not filled with nerves or fear.

Years as a trainer… 10 How do you feel social media has impacted our industry? I think social media has positively impacted our industry in the sense that people are able to see horses from all over the country. This gets people excited and often prompts people to inquire on sale horses and breeding stallions. The downside to this is that not as many people are actually visiting farms in person because so much can be seen from social media without having to make a trip.

What venue do you feel is the ideal location for a horse show? Why? Springfield, Illinois. The coliseum is easy to show in, there are plenty of work rings, and the barns are ideal for the horses and people.

Years as a trainer… 45 How do you feel social media has impacted our industry? In a good way, it has changed how we market and promote horses; made it easier to send to a target market. In a negative way it has created a false reality where posting a win shot in a one-horse class is more important than accomplishing a goal or improving your skills. An alternate reality that is counter-productive to all the reasons we teach children equestrian skills: sense of accomplishment, self-esteem, confidence, discipline. We are in trouble as a culture and an industry when we become satisfied with our Facebook status.

We can promote horses nowadays like we haven’t been able to previously. It is easier to post a sales video then call up multiple trainers who might be looking for that exact horse.

Scottsdale.

Past or present, who would be your ideal judging panel? List three. There are so many great judges, it wouldn’t by right to name only three.

If you could add, change or bring one thing back to U.S. Nationals, what would it be? The halter and performance in the same arena.

What is your earliest U.S. Nationals memory? There are many, but my best memory was going Champion with Bey Ambition.

What venue do you feel is the ideal location for a horse show?

Why? I am biased because I live 10 minutes from it, but WestWorld has all the accommodations any horse exhibitor could want. Great barns, great footing and an overall great set up. Also, WestWorld is in Scottsdale which is safe and has plenty to do outside of the horse show.

If you could add, change or bring one thing back to U.S. Nationals, what would it be? Why? Freestyle Reining in the Ford Truck Arena on Finals night.

What is the most important thing you would like your clients to know and understand during a show like U.S. Nationals?

Big expectations may bring big disappointment, so just enjoy the horse show and be proud that you made it that far.

Why? Scottsdale, AZ. The weather is nice most of the year, there are plenty of work and show rings, and people love the location for eating and shopping.

If you could add, change, or bring one thing back to US Nationals, what would it be? Why? We would love to see green shavings all week and a dressier atmosphere, especially at night. Let’s bring back formal nights, at least for the last few days of the show. Additionally, we would like to change the seating in Ford Truck Arena.

Shawn: When Bob Battaglia showed Gai Argosy to the Arabian English Pleasure Open win in 1984.

Years as a trainer… 35+ How do you feel social media has impacted our industry?

We feel it has both positively and negatively impacted our industry.

Our beautiful horses and the wonderful people associated with our industry are able to be seen all over the world. Our industry is more transparent, people are able to see horses first, see what each farm is breeding and producing before visiting farms in person. Social media has come to the rescue of many Arabian horses in need and our Arabian family has banded together during trying times.

Carmelle: The first time I ever attended U.S. Nationals in 1978. A member of my 4-H club, Molly Purdy, had qualified to show in the Saddle Seat Equitation. We all went down to watch her and ended up having to sit super high up in Freedom Hall because the stands were completely sold out.

What is the most important thing you would like clients to know and understand during a show like U.S. Nationals? We would like our clients to remember to keep their confidence up and don’t psych themselves out before even hitting the show ring. Everyone is here for the same reason, to compete at the highest level and show off their beautiful horses. The U.S. Nationals can seem overwhelming to many people; trainers, judges, and horses included, but it is important not to crack under the pressure and enjoy every moment!

Years as a trainer… Jeff: a professional trainer 34 years. Roxanne: also a lifetime Arabian enthusiast, has trained and shown as an amateur for 25 years and most recently as a professional for 3 years.

How do you feel social media has impacted our industry? Social media can be a very positive and somewhat powerful source in the promoting of our Arabian breed. As purveyors of this incredible breed, we must honor its versatility including each and every person who either owns or simply loves them. Judgement is for competitions/shows, not the internet!

What venue do you feel is the ideal location for a horse show?

Why? Ideal is so elusive; weather is such a variable factor no matter the place or time. AZ in February seems appealing to many. It is important to remember that a special and memorable show can be any show. If the exhibitors experience a good, fair and fun time, they will deem it successful and return!

We as an Arabian community should want to be in attendance during the final days of the show, where the best of the best square off in an exciting and spine-tingling fashion. Create pageantry for/with our versatile breed.

Combine the junior and senior classes. Spotlights in the Arabian Halter finals.

What is your earliest U.S. Nationals memory? Shahteyna being crowned National Champion Mare in 1987 with Mike Neal. I showed the mare Elco Tah-Mara to a top ten in that same class. I

think my heart raced for a week from the energy that was in that building that night! Mike inspired all of us to dream big, and that’s exactly what we did!

What is the most important thing you would like your clients to know and understand during a show like U.S. Nationals?

This is not a show for the faint of heart. Yes, you have worked hard to prepare and be at the top of your game, so has everyone else.

Enjoy the ride (both literally and figuratively)! Never stop believing, for your day will arrive. Take pleasure not only in your success but those around you!

Years as a trainer… 5 How do you feel social media has impacted our industry?

Social media has impacted our industry dramatically; in good ways and bad. I think it is a great tool to connect our industry that is spread around the world. I love being able to see peoples’ success at shows, near and far, and it has also made a huge impact on helping our advertising and marketing.

What venue do you feel is the ideal location for a horse show?

Why? I think that it totally depends on the time of year. I think that there are many great fairgrounds around the country, but I am biased towards WestWorld in Scottsdale, AZ, although the weather doesn’t always cooperate on our side, whether it be rain in the winter or heat in the summer.

If you could add, change or bring one thing back to U.S. Nationals, what would it be? Why? I love to get dressed up.

I think that making the last two nights a fun, black tie event, could draw so much more excitement back to our show.

What is the most important thing you would like your clients to know and understand during a show like U.S. Nationals?

The camaraderie and barn atmosphere can make or break a show, in my opinion. Be excited for others, help each other out, support when needed. The relationships we build doing this are half the enjoyment. We are so lucky to have such a fun and supportive group!

U.S. NATIONA LS PROFILES that is up to date on the rules and knows what to look for in a good horse in whatever division is being exhibited, the best horse should win.

If you could add, change, or bring one thing back to U.S. Nationals, what would it be? Why? We need to bring the “show” back to the show. We have the best horses and the most talented amateurs and trainers of any breed, but let’s face it, our show is boring. It needs to be turned into that special event that highlights our horses and our riders. We run from morning to after midnight and spend too much time in the line-up waiting for finalists to be announced. We need to figure out a way to draw people to our show; we need to make it be an exciting event that people want to come back to see year after year.

In my opinion, U.S. Nationals needs to be in Louisville, KY. We have history there, the show ring is the best place to show off your horse in the country. Freedom Hall has the right atmosphere and excitement which allows you to show your horse to its best potential. It has everything we need: good seating, skyboxes, great lighting, convenient location for vendors and hotels, all in close to proximity. It is designed to make the show a spectacular event.

We took three horses to U.S. Nationals and I went top twenty in Arabian English Pleasure and Peter went top ten Half-Arabian English Pleasure. It was a real big deal!

How do you feel social media has impacted our industry? Social media has had a huge impact on our industry. Ten or fifteen years ago, people where just chatting in message rooms, and now we have people spending hours on various forms of social media each day.

Everyone has a huge amount of information at their fingertips.

Whether people are looking to breed, buy and sell horses, or just advertise in general, it has changed everything we do. It has even changed how we watch horse shows. As a farm, we can get more information out to more people faster than ever.

What is your earliest U.S. National memory? The first couple years we attended the show we stabled next to Gordon Potts, and showing Countess Vanessa in Louisville to her national championship in Half-Arabian Park. The crowd was cheering unbelievably loud and she was performing at her best; she really was a great horse!

What is the most important thing you would like your clients to know and understand during a show like U.S. Nationals?

Enjoy your horse! Enjoy the moment. You worked hard all year and you deserve to be at the U.S. National horse show. Just go in the ring and do your very best!

What venue to you feel is the ideal location for a horse show?

Why? Any location that is a destination. Spectators want to be entertained when they attend an event, they are looking for atmosphere and excitement. They want to go out to great restaurants that are close to the show and they want hotels in that same area so they can go mingle with their friends and other exhibitors.

How many foals do you produce a year? One or two.

When you first started breeding, what were your goals? How have they evolved over the years? Originally, our goal was to produce purebred Arabians with the conformation to show in halter and the ability to progress into a successful performance career. Lately, we have focused more on breeding purebred, Half-Arabian and Saddlebred performance horses.

In your opinion, what are some motivating factors that incentivize breeders? What are some things that can be discouraging? Some motivating factors are the diverse types of breeding programs offered today. Whether it be a halter program or one of the performance programs (AEPA, AWPA, AHPA, Reining), it’s always fun for the breeder to see their foals participate. The most discouraging factor is the cost.

What was your first big break as a breeder? When our filly, Moonstruck DA (Rodan LTD x Verily PCF), won the 2015 Scottsdale Signature Stallion Auction Championship Yearling Arabian Filly class. Being the owner of both the sire and mare and watching Sydney show her to the win was a moment I’ll never forget.

Where do you see your breeding program 10 years from now? My hope would be for our program to continue to breed a small number of carefully selective foals each year. Avoiding any current trends and producing sound, beautiful and athletic horses is the dream.

What advice would you give someone looking to breed for the first time? Do your homework! Study bloodlines, talk to knowledgeable breeders, go and physically evaluate the potential stallion/mare, and look at as many offspring as possible. Choose wisely.

In your opinion, what are some motivating factors that incentivize breeders? What are some things that can be discouraging? Futurities that reward breeders; recognition for consistency in their programs like the AWPA, AHPA and AEPA, and wins that come from buyers into their programs. The downward slump of the market and constant changes of shows and the Breeders Sweepstakes are discouraging. We constantly thank owners when our horses win.

And what can you always count on them to consistently produce? Our mares are newer producers; each mare has produced one foal for us. Two were initially maiden mares. But if I picked a prized mare, it would be our HA Cadillac Cowgirl+++/. She has produced a gelding that just keeps getting better and better. SF Khrush will be the one to watch in the AWPA.

SF Khemo Sunday+/ turned out to be a consistent winner: earning multiple top tens starting with U.S. Nationals, then a top ten at Youth Nationals as a dressage horse, and eventually winning Youth National Champion and Reserve National Champion in dressage.

Where do you see your breeding program 10 years from now? We shall see ... the sky is the limit.

What advice would you give someone looking to breed for the first time? Do your homework. What are your plans for your foal? Will you have a place to keep it if it is injured? Will you keep it for all its life? You shouldn’t breed thinking you will sell it for big money. Learn to listen and learn from other peoples’ pitfalls.

Years as a breeder… 5 How many foals do you produce a year? 3 to 5.

When you first started breeding, what were your goals? How have they evolved over the years? I wanted to breed fine horses and sell at an affordable price. Over the years I’ve learned what pedigrees I wish to pursue and have listened closely to those who have great knowledge. It has served me well. Fortunately, we began with some very fine horses.

In your opinion, what are some motivating factors that incentivize breeders? What are some things that can be discouraging? The excitement of being able to choose who you wish to bred with and follow that, and producing great quality horses at affordable prices.

Discouraging factors can be that I’m a small-time breeder and the competition with large outfits is very difficult.

Who would you consider your most prized broodmare and/or stallion?

And what can you always count on them to consistently produce? I have two amazing mares, Impressa MI was my first love, followed by JR Francesca. Both are amazing producers.

When you first started breeding, what were your goals? How have they evolved over the years? Initially our goal was to maximize B*ask lineage, but more recently we have diversified our program by acquiring mares and breeding to stallions with more varied pedigrees. We also match a stallion to a mare based on the attributes of each horse.

In your opinion, what are some motivating factors that incentivize breeders? What are some things that can be discouraging? It is very exciting to create unique individuals and to compare progeny from each mare. Successful breeding is also so important for effective brand management of a breeding program.

However, breeding involves a bit of the roll of the dice. It is also hard to compete with the large-scale breeders.

Who would you consider your most prized broodmare and/or stallion? And what can you always count on them to consistently produce? Every one of our broodmares has special qualities, but SV Starlite stands out for her consistency in producing long necks and pretty faces. She is as elegant at age 18 as she was when I first acquired her. She’s been a wonderful mare in the show ring, as well as a broodmare.

What was your first big break as a breeder? We began using Colorado State University’s equine reproduction center for embryo transfers which markedly increased our success in pregnancies and enabled mares to continue in the show ring.

Where do you see your breeding program 10 years from now?

We hope to see a number of our scions wearing roses for us, as well as other owners. We will continue to transition show mares to broodmare status when they’ve proven themselves. We would also like to sell mares with great breeding potential to other breeding programs with similar objectives.

What advice would you give someone looking to breed for the first time? Have a business plan. Know what to cull, what to train and when to sell. Understand success is by no means guaranteed.

And have a marketing strategy and network with other breeders and trainers to build a brand.

Years as a breeder… An interesting question, because so many breedings I’ve arranged have gone on to great success over the past 20 years.

Romney and I seriously began breeding our own about eight years ago.

I’ve been deeply involved with Arabians since childhood.

When you first started breeding, what were your goals? How have they evolved over the years? I have always loved beautiful, athletic horses. I believe in the total package. I felt that way in the beginning, and still do today.

How many foals do you produce a year? As small breeders, we have to be particularly discriminating; quality, not quantity. Currently we expect two foals for Crescent Moon Ranch in 2020, along with four foals coming from our two stallions, Skyefall and LC Imperatore. Crescent Moon horses are champions in both halter and performance.

In your opinion, what are some motivating factors that incentivize breeders? What are some things that can be discouraging? Patience is a great virtue in breeding. Using incentives like auction breedings are ok, but are you basing a breeding on money, or a particular class, etc.

That is a one-shot deal. Your horse should be around for 20+ years. It needs a lifetime of value.

When you first started breeding, what were your goals? How have they evolved over the years? Our breeding goals always include Arabian type, substance and correct conformation. Athleticism is endemic to Arabian type. It’s mandatory that our Arabian athletes be able to successfully compete in halter as well as under saddle. The “evolution” has been maintenance of consistent quality.

Who would you consider your most prized broodmare and/or stallion?

And what can you always count on them to consistently produce? I have multiple great mares: Kela, Koko, Miss Giovanna, Blue Moon, Chrystal.

These are older mares, but there are young ones up and coming. Khadraj and Giovanni are the cornerstones of Jerland, but Khaja J and Puccini J are rapidly rising to the forefront.

What was your first big break as a breeder? LH Garcia, a horse I produced with friend and partner, Herman Blaser, in 1984. Then the acquisition of MPA Giovanni and Khadraj NA, and their success through their incredible offspring.

Where do you see your breeding program 10 years from now? I have no intention of retiring. We are producing too many great and winning horses. I hope to still be riding the “wave.”

What advice would you give someone looking to breed for the first time? Patience. Breeding is a lifetime dream. One of my greatest young stallions is seven generations of our program. There were many great ancestors preceding his arrival, but he is the super star. It is a lifetime of loving what you do.

In your opinion, what are some motivating factors that incentivize breeders? What are some things that can be discouraging? Passion for the unparalleled beauty and abilities of the Arabian horse should be a motivating factor. Know conformation from a horseman’s perspective.

Study pedigrees. Participate in programs that enhance the value of a foal.

Choose those programs carefully. Cost/payback ratio can be discouraging.

Who would you consider your most prized broodmare and/or stallion?

Tapestry VF (Psymadre x Lads Tawny), has given us spectacular foals each time. She’s produced champions in halter, hunter pleasure and western pleasure, and signature Arabian type with consistently perfect necks, shoulders, hocks, and tails. Her foals exude quality and charisma.

What was your first big break as a breeder? Sad, really. My dear friend, Gari Dill-Marlow, passed away and bequeathed me Tapestry VF, almost a full sister to our 3-time Reserve National Champion, Alada Psynergy

Where do you see your breeding program 10 years from now? We’re already seeing exceptional youngsters into the second generation. Our blend of European and domestic lines should prevail well into the future. As a breeder, I never get stuck on “today.”

What advice would you give someone looking to breed for the first time? Be careful! Don’t rely on everything “experts” might tell you.

Seek the advice of those you trust and follow your instinct regarding the horses you like. Beyond that, define your goals and always strive for quality. Most importantly, educate yourself.

Years as a breeder… our family had our first purebred Arabian foal in 1981.

How many foals do you produce a year? 1 to 2.

When you first started breeding, what were your goals? How have they evolved over the years? We’ve always shown saddle seat, so our goals were to produce athletic, trotting horses. Along the way, we’ve learned that the two most important traits to breed for are quality and solid structure; that way it gives horses the opportunity to excel in whatever division they are best suited to.

In your opinion, what are some motivating factors that incentivize breeders? What are some things that can be discouraging? We find the programs like AHPA, AEPA and AWPA, very motivational. We’ve purchased several breedings thru the AEPA and have an entry in the AHPA this year.

And what can you always count on them to consistently produce? It was always our great ASB mare, One Hundred Proof. She produced 15 foals; all different, yet all possessed quality, beauty and athleticism. Now we have GSF Insatiable (IXL Noble Express x PWA Tusea) who has produced three exceptional fillies, each unique, but all with those three traits we value so highly.

What was your first big break as a breeder? Our affiliation with Pat Richard at Twin Fir Arabian Stud. We acquired great mares from her and bred to her stallions. Twin Fir was an amazing place to buy horses!

The first national champion we bred was Dutch Dolley+/, National Champion H/A English Pleasure, sired by Pat’s stallion *Marhaba.

Where do you see your breeding program 10 years from now? My sister, Molly Silbernagel, and I are continuing the family tradition of breeding Arabians set by our mom, Diana McClaskey (the DM in DM Show Horses). We have several youngsters who’ve yet to hit the show ring. A dream would be seeing one of our horses trotting out of the arena with AEPA roses.

What advice would you give someone looking to breed for the first time? Start with as high a quality mare as you possibly can. Find a stallion that is a good solid cross for that mare, rather than what is the current trend. Enjoy your babies—they are wonderful!

How many foals do you produce a year? Ordinarily we have one or two, but we have six coming next year, five of whom are by Fire and Goldd.

The other is by our other stallion, Anduril of Rohan.

When you first started breeding, what were your goals? How have they evolved over the years? I’m not sure we really had clear-cut goals initially.

We just bred what we liked. Over time, we have decided to focus on western pleasure and the English division. These are the most talented athletes of our world and it’s what we enjoy the most.

In your opinion, what are some motivating factors that incentivize breeders? What are some things that can be discouraging? The prize money programs such as the Scottsdale Signature and Region 12 Spotlight are a big factor, as is the ability to keep improving the breed. Obviously, it’s discouraging when things don’t turn out as you hoped, but that’s true of life in general, and the fun of taking a chance with something a little different that turns out fantastic is definitely worth it!

Who would you consider your most prized broodmare and/or stallion?

And what can you always count on them to consistently produce?

We have a number of great mares who are proven producers in the English division and western. We have mares by Legacy of Fame, Exxpectation, Afire Bey V, Afires Heir and several amazing Saddlebreds.

As stallions go, Fire and Goldd is certainly the star of the show, having sired so many fabulous babies for years. And, Anduril of Rohan is making his mark as a young stud. His first baby, a filly out of our Legacy of Fame mare is truly outstanding and we’re looking forward to breeding him to other western-type mares, now that we see the star quality he produces.

When you first started breeding, what were your goals? How have they evolved over the years? To breed beautiful, correct and family-oriented Arabians, and we’ve stayed with that goal over the years.

Who would you consider your most prized broodmare and/or stallion?

And what can you always count on them to consistently produce? Razcal Bey+++/ proved to be one of the most consistent stallions we ever used ... big beautiful eyes, length of neck and long correct legs, as well as athletic ability and a wonderful disposition.

What was your first big break as a breeder? Buying Razcal as a youngster.

Where do you see your breeding program 10 years from now? Sadly, we are done breeding.

What advice would you give someone looking to breed for the first time?

The same as we and many others have been told, breed the best to the best, and follow your heart, not hype.

What was your first big break as a breeder? Buying Fire and Goldd earlier this year. How Dwane negotiated that deal, we will never know, but we are thrilled that he did it!

Where do you see your breeding program 10 years from now? We breed for quality and have not found it necessary to have a huge broodmare band in order to do so. Why mess with success?

What advice would you give someone looking to breed for the first time?

Talk to everyone you can, but in the end decide what means the most to you and focus on that.

we have adopted many of the same goals the Orrs implemented, while adding in some of our own. It is our goal to breed the highest quality Arabian horses that are not only beautiful and conformationally correct, but also athletic and have good minds.

In your opinion, what are some motivating factors that incentivize breeders? It is important at Orrion Farms to look at the big picture and stay positive. Walking through the pastures and barn isles of Orrion Farms is one of the biggest incentives we have, seeing our beautiful horses and enjoying the bond with them.

Who would you consider your most prized broodmare and/or stallion?

And what can you always count on them to consistently produce? This is a challenging question as we are blessed with so many wonderful mares!

To name a few, we treasure Queen Ayda FWM, Duchess of Marwan, OFW Jewelee and Cirque Du Soleil BF. On the stallion front we have El Rey Magnum RCF, who has just begun his breeding career and we wait with great anticipation!

What was your first big break as a breeder? Historically, OFW Psylhouette and OFW Mishaahl have played a huge role in the Arabian horse industry, as they are the dams of EKS Alihandro, Wadee Al Shaqab and Kahil Al Shaqab. Between these three stallions, there is six or more World Championships!

Where do you see your breeding program 10 years from now? We plan to keep our focus the same, breeding the best Arabian horses! We also see OFW venturing a bit into the performance side of the industry with our first homebred western horse showing at the 2019 U.S. Nationals.

What advice would you give someone looking to breed for the first time? Education is key: visit other breeders, study pedigrees, enjoy the time with your horses. The beauty is that we are always learning and growing together. our breeding program has evolved to breeding both Arabian and Half-Arabian English pleasure horses. Our goal of producing naturally athletic, well balanced horses has not changed.

In your opinion, what are some motivating factors that incentivize breeders? What are some things that can be discouraging? Payback programs are very motivating to breeders, as well as the pride of seeing your name listed as breeder when your horses grow up to be successful in the show ring. In our opinion, the expense of breeding can be very discouraging. This could be offset if there were more money classes being offered throughout our show season (rather than just at Nationals).

Who would you consider your most prized broodmare and/or stallion?

And what can you count on them to consistently produce? We have been very fortunate with our group of Apollopalooza daughters and granddaughters. These mares consistently produce strong, forward thinking English pleasure horses. We owe many of our breeding successes to Zootopia, Meringue Kisses and Project Runway.

We breed for beautiful, correct foals that meet our satisfaction with an eye on the market. We have to be able to market our babies, and with the changing world-wide market, that may be daunting.

Years as a breeder… since 1988, starting HFA with the goal of breeding Arabian halter horses that can compete in under saddle classes.

How many foals do you produce a year? The number of foals we’ve produced has varied over the years, depending on nature and what mares we had. The most we bred was four foals over several years.

Who would you consider your most prized broodmare and/or stallion?

And what can you always count on them to consistently produce?

Our prized mare was our Bey Shah daughter, Bey Shahna KA. She nicked extremely well with Padrons Psyche, having four full siblings.

We sold them easily and a couple we retained. Consistency was not always attained as we tried different stallions with her, but they were always very good foals.

What was your first big break as a breeder? The foals we produced from our Bey Shah daughter provided attention from some of the larger farms and trainers.

Where do you see your breeding program 10 years from now?

We have decided to stop breeding for now, for the market is very tough to sell horses.

What advice would you give someone looking to breed for the first time? Concentrate on studying the Arabian horse market and trends to determine where you are going. Use your resources to attain the best mares possible and study which stallions will nick to meet your goals.

Years as a breeder… 10. We are a small breeding farm in the foothills of the Berkshire mountains in Northwest Connecticut.

How many foals do you produce a year? It varies, but since my husband insists we have “too many mouths to feed,” we only had two foals this year.

When you first started breeding, what were your goals? How have they evolved over the years? We were looking to breed a champion show horse. And, if not a champion, a beautiful, tractable athlete.

We still want to breed fine athletes that excel in their disciplines, and we’ve always sought to breed fine English horses.

In your opinion, what are some motivating factors that incentivize breeders? What are some things that can be discouraging? I think when one has bred an Arabian, no matter what its discipline, it inspires one to continue breeding with the hope of getting that champion. They are magical beings. The only discouraging thing is seeing all the exceptional horses out there and wondering if one’s horses will be as excellent.

What was your first big break as a breeder? When we bred QH Serengeti. People started to take more notice of us because of him.

Where do you see your breeding program 10 years from now?

I hope we will still be breeding our stallion and producing exceptional Arabian and Half-Arabian horses.

What advice would you give someone looking to breed for the first time? Breed the best to the best to get the best. So, one has to choose an excellent stallion and breed him to the best mare possible. Chances are you’ll get a foal you like!

your niece go National Champion on a 5-year-old you bred. It is a family affair for us. Discouraging is the amount of time and money it takes to become successful.

Who would you consider your most prized broodmare and/or stallion?

And what can you always count on them to consistently produce?

That’s tough; we have such an exceptional broodmare band. We have invested a lot of time researching and buying great mares. Our greatest attribute might be our two 23-year-old stallions Nicklebey Berry and Presidio CF. They possess some of the most desired, extinct lineage in the industry.

What was your first big break as a breeder? Definitely, Expressamo. He went on to win eight national championships while we owned him. I knew he was a winner the first time I saw him out—he just kept getting better, even after we sold him. There have been many great ones over the years, but I am confident in saying our best ones are yet to come.

Where do you see your breeding program 10 years from now? We have plans to reintroduce Nicklebey Berry (Hucklebey Berry x Cognac daughter) and Presidio CF (Barbary x *Aladdinn daughter) into our program, so that we have mares to cross back on the stallions of today.

We’re really hoping for a breeding colt by Nicklebey Berry.

How many foals do you produce a year? Depends on the year. This year we had seven. We are taking a year to catch up and only expecting a couple foals next year. We have some very promising youngsters ranging in age.

What advice would you give someone looking to breed for the first time? Breeding is a gamble; you never know what you are going to get.

Buy or lease one spectacular mare and have someone with pedigree knowledge help you along. You can have two supermodels and end up with an ugly baby. Go in with an open mind.

When you first started breeding, what were your goals? How have they evolved over the years? I was very young when we discovered Arabians.

It did not take long before we had a herd of mares by the stallions *Serafix, Karadjordje and Natez. I certainly wish I knew then what I know now. We just did not have the knowledge to capitalize off of such spectacular stock. It took us years to figure it out.

In your opinion, what are some motivating factors that incentivize breeders? What are some things that can be discouraging? Definitely, the act of breeding itself; foaling them out, raising them and watching them become successful. There is no better feeling other than watching

The camaraderie with fellow Arabian horse enthusiasts, seeing all my friends in one place, and coming together to form a small but vibrant community in which we are all neighbors for a couple of weeks.

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? August 2004 in Denver, Colorado. I participated in an Arabian Horse Extravaganza as part of a Native Costume drill team. Our rehearsed pattern was set to Sting’s “Desert Rose” and that song will forever remind me of how fun it was to ride in an exhibition performance.

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? Shan Wilson has an incredible talent for training a horse so that the amateur can ride and show that horse to its finest ability.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? I would take them to visit an Arabian training barn and introduce them not only to these magnificent animals, but also to the wonderful people who belong to our Arabian horse community.

What are three things you are most excited for or love most about U.S. Nationals? This year I am excited for the Western Pleasure Futurities because my two youngsters will be making their Nationals debut. It is always fun to see babies get started and see what their potential can be. I am also excited for Friday night with the AWPA, AHPA and AEPA. Cool new format!

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? My last class in Freedom Hall, which was also my last class with CF Sparkling Star. The atmosphere was awesome (it was the H/A Park AOTR) and it was emotional because it was our last ride together. She retired as a Top Ten U.S. National Park horse at 16 years old.

What are you are most excited for or love most about U.S. Nationals? Reconnecting with people we don’t see too often and seeing our horses performing at their best.

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? If I could have one last ride on Mytoi Bask W+// just galloping around the pasture, that moment would light up my world. Any moment with a horse that has passed would be a treasure. I wish they lived forever.

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? Dwane Hankins cares about our horses like they are hiss. He invests his time in their health and happiness.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? Arabian horses are special animals. They are smart, athletic and loving. They know who their people are and have an incredible spirit.

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? Without a doubt, work ethic. In my opinion, Joe Reser is the hardest working trainer in the business. He and Michele put in countless hours both at home and at horse shows. They genuinely want their amateurs to succeed and enjoy their horses, so they go above and beyond to make sure that happens!

What is something people would be surprised to know about you? I work in the concrete and construction industry, and I am a proud fourth generation member of my family’s business, which was founded by my great grandfather in 1921.

What are three things you are most excited for or love most about U.S. Nationals? I love to show, see all my very special friends, and spend time with the horses. What a week!

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? In the show ring, it would have to be my first big win at U.S. Nationals. I won the national championship on Nobleist in the Country Pleasure 40 & Over in 1997. What a memory!

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? I couldn’t possibly name just one. We have been with Gordon for almost 30 years, so obviously, I think he is doing something right!

What is something people would be surprised to know about you? There probably isn’t very much about me that would surprise anyone. However, it may be surprising that I love to drive a manual sports car all through Great Britain on the “wrong” side of the road. So fun!

# of horses competing at U.S. Nationals… 2 What are three things you are most excited for or love most about U.S. Nationals? This may sound odd, but I love the crisp morning air. I also love watching the high quality western classes, and seeing all the friends I have made over the years.

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? When I won my first national trophy at Canadian Nationals in 2015 with Mosaic BFA. I had never won a trophy in my whole life. I was so happy, I grabbed it and held it up. Thank God, Mosaic doesn’t spook. I could relive that over and over, I was just so thrilled!

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? He makes a plan in advance to make you and the horse the best you can be. He sticks to the plan and doesn’t just “wing” it. It is a huge part of his success.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? I would tell them about all the friends and wonderful moments we have had in the Arabian world. I would also tell them of the versatility of the Arabian horse.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you? Yes, I actually graduated from hairdressing school.

What are three things you are most excited for or love most about U.S. Nationals? A fun, full week of getting to see lots of friends and amazing horses; the excitement of getting to spend extra time with my horses and compete; and being thankful for the time Nationals allows me to spend with my family.

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? Scottsdale 2016, the very first year that I showed SF Nitro Shoc in the Half-Arabian Country division. It was our first time switching from English to country and it was incredible.

Everything was spot on. I will never forget that ride.

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? Josh’s dedication and passion towards the horses he works with and his business is unwavering. He also demonstrates an amazing ability to connect with the needs of each individual horse.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? I would bring them to the barn or to a horse show in order to show them firsthand the diversity of the Arabian breed.

Arabians can really do it all and no matter what your interests are, there is something for everyone.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you? That I still own the very first horse I ever rode from when I was 10 years old. He is now 33 years old!

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? Showing Second Editions Debut in equitation. I think the reasons are obvious, but combining my all-time favorite horse with my favorite discipline was a dream come true (it’s 14 years later, and it still doesn’t feel real). I’m forever grateful for this opportunity.

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? There are so many to choose from, but it’s his ability to make it fun on top of all the great training he provides to our horses and to us as riders.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? I would share how being a part of the Arabian industry has truly made me who I am today and is the best thing a family can be involved in together. To get involved, I would encourage them to look into a local lesson program. Growing up in Lori Ross’ program instilled my love for the Arabian horse.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you? I excel in fantasy football. As the only girl on our 12-team league, I’ve won three out of the last four seasons (finishing 2nd in the 4th).

My niece, Kendra McConnell, will show our farm bred H/A Hunter, Medusa’s Reflection for us.

What are three things you are most excited for or love most about U.S. Nationals? We have been working hard this year to prepare, and showing what we have accomplished with our beautiful horses will be a highlight. And, of course, spending time with our horse show families!

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? I went down to the barn early to feed recently, the full moon was setting and light was beginning to make the pastures light up. And my horses were calling to me. I am amazed at how lucky I am to have this wonderful life.

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? My trainers respect my ability and work with me to accomplish my goals. A good trainer knows that to be really competitive at a national level, the horse and rider need to be able to deliver a good performance, be mentally prepared and make good decisions in the arena.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? We meet many non-horse people on the trails. I think we need to be ambassadors and always be polite and friendly. We let people pet the horses if they want, and just yesterday, a lady with a young girl asked us where she could get her daughter into a riding program.

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? Showing Mamage at Madison Square Garden in New York City and getting to walk him down Fifth Avenue with my trainer and family.

It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I will never forget.

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? Our trainers are very passionate and driven but I would have to say the thing that sets them apart is the sense of family. We grew up riding in this barn and they have also been a big part of our life.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? It is hard to explain the passion that I possess for the Arabian horse to someone that is not familiar with the breed. I feel that the best way to encourage someone to get involved is to let them experience the show first-hand, so that they can feel the excitement and energy for themselves.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

I have a fraternal twin sister that shows horses with me, but I also have identical twin brothers.

FARM A FFILIATION : Vicki Humphrey Training Center # of horses competing at U.S. Nationals… 1 What are three things you are most excited for or love most about U.S. Nationals? I absolutely love watching the open classes, spending time with my family/friends, and drinking the blood orange margarita(s) at the Wild Fork. And, of course, showing the star herself, Miss P! If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? It would have to be my national championship ride at Youth Nationals with Rite On Target. It was my first final (ever) on the first day of YN 2006. When Tony called us for the winner circle, I completely blacked out. Thankfully, Target could bridle himself and he took care me for the victory pass.

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? How methodical Jessie is with her training program. The preparation and tools she provides for each horse and rider is truly amazing. And she’s a dragon wizard which is pretty cool too.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? I would be honest and explain how my Arabians changed my life and kept me sane for the majority of it. The bond you develop with these magical creatures is unreal and worth every challenge that comes along the way. They give your life a whole new meaning.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you? I don’t think many people know that I have epilepsy. Basically, my brain works a lot different than the “norm.” It used to bother me a lot, but it doesn’t anymore. I really believe my horses can sense that and I feel connected with them on a deeper level in some ways.

Our amateur gelding injured himself early on in the season which has possibly put him out of the show ring permanently. But we are excited to have two fabulous 2-year-olds coming up for next year’s junior horse classes in western and possibly country.

What are three things you are most excited for or love most about U.S. Nationals? We have attended as observers and sometimes competitors, every year since 2004. I love it all! But my favorite is the Finals Western Pleasure Open class and the English Pleasure class. We have enjoyed the Wine Walks and last year’s Casino night.

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? Our first trip ever to U.S. Nationals in 2004 as an observer/owner.

Our Jr. Reining horse, SF Khemo Sunday+/, was 0.5 pts. from winning reserve champion. Those two runs in the class were nail biting. It took the last two horses in the last run to knock him out of champion and reserve.

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? Leon Matthias is amazing! His horses are broke—I can take them home and ride everywhere; I appreciate his quiet attention to details and consideration of my horses’ welfare; and he’s not out to just get our money for a show. If I’m not ready I don’t get to go.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? I show them the horses, invite them over, and offer to help. I walk them through each and every step. I can talk for hours about the Arabian horse and its attributes. My dad got started because his dad bred to the stallions at Fort Riley.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you? I’m a killer cook. When David and I work together, we can serve a gourmet meal. There are no prefab foods except cereal at our house. Plus, I’m a Nurse at a prison.

What are three things you are most excited for or love most about U.S. Nationals? After 20+ years away, I am looking forward to being back in the show ring. I am excited to rekindle friendships and share this experience again with my sister. There is nothing like the sound of the trumpet prior to the evening session.

What are three things you are most excited for or love most about U.S. Nationals? Experiencing U.S. Nationals this year for the first time as an owner; being part of the excitement of each of my horses’ entering the national ring; and watching them compete to become a National Champion, top ten, or just being a contender. I love the journey.

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? Picking one moment or memory is difficult. My fondest memories growing up revolve around Arabians and showing. I remember my “prize” for cantering the first time (a silver belt buckle with my initial).

Wearing that belt buckle in my classes reminded me of my hard work and perseverance.

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? Dalton has a tremendous gift selecting horses for each rider, developing a bond with the horses he trains, and encouraging his riders to push themselves.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? Arabians are beautiful horses that can teach and encourage youth. Finding a barn that offers a lesson program is a great way to get involved and learn more. My son was able to learn about Arabians through Select Show Horse’s Summer Camp!

What is something people would be surprised to know about you? I started riding horses at the age of two in the saddle with my dad on a Quarter Horse named Blackjack while trail riding. My first horse was a Shetland pony named Beauty, and my show ring experience started at the age of four in leadline with my Half-Arabian, Patches.

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? I would relive my first horse show experience as a saddle seat rider on an amazing purebred Arabian mare. She didn’t just make me feel confident, she made me feel pretty. I was hooked!

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? Confidence. Joe is not just a confident trainer, handler and rider; he brings this amazing quality out in his horses, his riders and his friends.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? Horses feel everything, from the love of a person, to the wind in their mane and a fly on their back. It’s the Arabian horse that feels all those things but returns it back tenfold.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you? When I was 24, I broke my pelvis at a horse show from an accident causing my mare to fall on me. I was told I wouldn’t walk again. But because of my Arabian family, I pushed myself to not just go to the barn and groom my horse, but to get on and ride. I’ve been showing ever since.

Arabian horses are some of the most personable, beautiful, athletic and versatile horses. They can be a pet, a show horse, and everything in between while looking gorgeous!

I grew up doing fishing tournaments every summer in the Bahamas.

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? The amazing moment clasping hands with my dad when he finished the Tevis (I was his crew). I will forever be grateful to my parents for the upbringing I had with Arabian horses. I still have horses that go back in their tail female lines to the first foal born on my parents’ ranch in 1963.

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? Joe always puts the welfare of the horses first, no matter what.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? Visit Chestnuthill Arabians and speak with Joe and Rob; see the horses and take a halter or riding lesson. Joe is full of knowledge, enthusiasm and integrity, and his love for the breed is infectious! You will be glad you did—Arabians will enrich your life beyond belief.

I have a graduate degree in mathematics, something I did for the fun of it.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? I would encourage them to get involved with Arabians at any level they could. I would invite them out to our small Arabian horse farm, Hidden Hollow Farm.

Years ago, I appeared on the TV game show, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? I’ve had the honor of working with Andy Sellman (once the Team Argent, and now Team Sahara) and with Lucho Guimaraes (Team LGA). It is their honesty, integrity, hard work and love of the Arabian horse, that these men, families and teams put in every single day.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? Arabians are an amazing breed; smart, loving, loyal, hard-working and kind.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

I have open arms to most all that I get involved with. I believe in people, almost to a fault, and I love hard and deep.

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? Winning the reserve national championship in the maturity class on my Half-Arabian, Jumping Jack Flash.

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? The first time I rode at Region XI. When entering the ring with Bold Citation, he just came alive! It was the most amazing feeling, having a horse “come on” in the ring. I hope Gracie and I can do that in Tulsa!

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? Justin McManus trains each horse to meet its individual needs and to perform to its best level without pushing them beyond their present capabilities. Some horses take longer than others to manage the show ring effectively.

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? Shan listens to my fears and understands how to mentor me as a rider. He has the innate ability to train a horse so an amateur like myself can ride to best of my ability, but also bring out the performance of the horse in a way I can handle it.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? Regional shows are an excellent place to begin learning about the varied capabilities of the Arabian horse. Visiting training barns provides exposure to trainers and clients. The Scottsdale show is also an awesome place to participate, given the tours and information provided and volume of horses.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? Come out to the barn and visit! Take lessons, observe and get to know the wonderful people in this community.

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? When Missknowitall was named National Champion Junior horse in 2015. She was only four and she and Jesse had just a beautiful ride together! I wish I would have had more years with her.

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? Josh truly loves the horses! He is so kind and patient with them and the amateurs that ride them! It is hard to believe that Josh is only 23 years old with a business of his own.

He is dedicated to the horses and he has a strong work ethic.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? This has actually happened to me on a few occasions.

I have sent a few people, kids and adults, to lesson programs in Arizona. They have really been having fun! They also come to the local horse shows.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

That I recently got my real estate license! We just built a new home and the whole process really sparked an interest.

What are three things you are most excited for or love most about U.S. Nationals? Seeing everyone that I do not normally get to see during the year. There is something special about seeing your friends at the top of their game showing the horses that they love. It can give you goosebumps.

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? There are two moments that stick out the most for me ... the first time I was National Champion in Canada and the first time I was top ten Half-Arabian Country Select. The adrenaline rush from both wins I will never forget.

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? Joe Alberti works so hard to make everyone’s dreams come true. He is constantly working; it never stops. Joe is the type of guy that would give you the shirt off his back. He cares for what the owner wants/thinks, and for the horse. Joe is just a nice guy.

This is my first time competing at U.S. Nationals. I’ve been riding competitively for eight years and I am really excited to experience the energy of the biggest show. My wife, Stephanie, will also be showing and I’m most looking forward to sharing this experience with her.

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? I really don’t have a single moment I would isolate. My involvement with the Arabian horse has been truly life changing. Each ride, each competition, each practice, provides balance in my life. It is also a part of my life I get to share and enjoy with my wife.

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? Gordon Potts has an incredible depth and experience with horses, and an ability to put you and your horse “on the same page.”

Each horse is different and each one I ride he is able to connect my level of skill with the experience of the horse and make us winners together.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? I always try to encourage people to come to the barn and meet the horses. I feel once they are exposed to the horse, the horses do most of the work.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? As a breed, the Arabian horse is very intelligent and very “humanized.” Their individual personalities, expressiveness, majesty and beauty, make them a true pleasure to be around every day. I always say, there is a reason horses are used for therapy.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

Currently I am not able to run or walk, I am on crutches. I had knee surgery less than a week ago. The surgery removed part of a torn meniscus and also micro fractures (drilling) into the bone. Hopefully, I will be able to show at Nationals.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you? I am a university provost. Those that know me from showing horses don’t think I fit their idea of a university administrator. Those that know me at the university are surprised when they first learn of my involvement with horses. I guess I’m doing a good job of separating work and play.

2. I love the atmosphere and excitement of competition, and the great sportsmanship between people.

What are three things you are most excited for or love most about U.S. Nationals? I competed many years ago in Albuquerque on my parents’ horse, but this year I will be on my own horse. I’ve been riding this horse for many years, so it’s really cool to finally be at this point with him. I’m just excited to be able to compete on this national stage and share it with my husband.

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? Many years ago I competed in Tucson, Arizona in an Open qualifying class and had an awful ride. I gathered myself, had a near perfect ride in the championship class and won. It was a pretty large class (I think, approximately 20 horses), and I was elated that I won an Open championship as an amateur.

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? Experience. He has taught me so much about the horse; how to ride and how to do it well. He is awesome!

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? It would be the first time I rode Have You Ever. My trainer, Elizabeth Pizzonia, knew I had a dream to ride and show an English horse. I worked hard with Liz practicing, and the day I tried her out was a great thrill for me. I loved her from that moment on.

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? Elizabeth has an extreme talent of matching her amateurs with a great horse to create a successful team! After every lesson, I can’t wait to go back for more. She makes dreams come true.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? I would tell them first, that they are so beautiful, smart and versatile, and until you ride one you won’t know. I would also tell them about their history—it is remarkable.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? First, I would say they are by far the most amateur friendly and are so versatile. They can work in any discipline and are extremely intelligent and loving—a real “people’s horse!” They give you 100% of their hearts. Next, go spend a day at an Arabian barn! Watch the people and the horses. They are having fun and are passionate about it. Talk with others who are involved, then go take a lesson and the adventure begins!

What is something people would be surprised to know about you? I’m a working mammographer and I’m currently serving as the president of the American Society of Radiologic Technologists, representing more than 156,000 medical imaging and radiation therapy professionals.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you? Four years ago this past April, I had a severe MVA. I never thought I would walk, let alone ride my horse again. They are my heart and soul. My heart, strength and desire, plus my great trainer, got me back to my passion. I am happier than I can say.

I couldn’t be more blessed or proud to have this wonderful experience showing FW! What are three things you are most excited for or love most about U.S. Nationals? This will be my first time competing and experiencing U.S. Nationals! I’m so super excited to witness the magnitude of impressive and beautiful horses, and just live in the moment! I’m also looking forward to watching classes and experiencing the electric atmosphere that comes along with it all!

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? Doing a photo shoot with my favorite horse, MJ Jaguar. Jag and I were an amazing team and were often in sync when we competed in competitions. I can vividly remember the day as if it was yesterday and I am very happy that me and my amazing horse were a part of it all!

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? Stachowski Farm is an entire team! When you are in the ring, you have several trainers behind you and supporting you every step of the way, but I have to say a special thank you to Stachowski California’s Jon Ramsay and John Lambert. They both took their time figuring out FW could rise to his best!

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? I would suggest they search for Arabian barns in their local area; possibly take a lesson. Nothing compares to the experience of being around a horse, and I know many barns would share the love. Retired show horses make wonderful lesson horses and ambassadors for the Arabian breed.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

I am left-handed, my favorite color is royal blue, I would consider myself an extroverted introvert, and I have been riding Arabian horses for about as long as I could walk!

This is my first experience at U.S. Nationals. I am very excited to experience this level of competition riding two amazing horses. U.S. will be the ultimate prize for all the hard work that my trainers and I have put in. I’m looking forward to riding against the top riders and horses in Tulsa.

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why?

The best times I have experienced with my horses have been out of the ring (not to say that those moments aren’t amazing as well). My trainer and I go out on the trail where they are stabled and those are the moments that I feel a special bond. It’s where horse and rider are free to be who we are.

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? I’ve known both of my trainers (mother/daughter combo) for over 10 years. They possess an uncanny knack for making you feel their love for Arabians, while teaching you to ride them. I have learned so much from each of them and admire their hard work, ethics, respect, and style of teaching.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? If you love horses, the Arabian has a special way of getting into your soul. They have a spirit that no other breed has, and that spirit will own your heart. You will never possess an Arabian, he or she will possess you, and make you a better person. Try it! You will never go back!

What are three things you are most excited for or love most about U.S. Nationals? Seeing my friends from all over, competing against such great horses, and watching all the trainers work their horses and compete.

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? A class at a local show a number of years ago. There was an energy flowing in the show ring I have never felt before and my horse, A to Z, and I had the most incredible ride ever. In the line-up, another rider commented on the energy in the air. Others felt it to too. It was surreal.

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? The quiet understanding of the young Arabian horse and its ability to learn.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? I would encourage them to come to the barn with me for a visit. I often refer to the Arabian horse as the equine’s equivalent of a golden retriever.

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? Gordon Potts is very versatile and can train any discipline. He loves the horses and his work. He also is very good with amateurs and their horses.

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? I have owned many wonderful horses through the years, but it would have to be watching Turismo RA grow up and win all of his National titles with top handlers such as Michael Byatt and David Boggs, as well as winning Scottsdale Unanimous Champion Stallion from a perfect presentation with David. That was a thrill!

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? Cathy is and always has been there for me 100%. She is a wonderful friend and has been by my side every step of the way with my horses. She is completely dedicated to marketing the horses on the highest level. She’s a true HORSEWOMAN, and the young superstar, Alayna, fits in perfectly!

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

I like SPOOKY things! And I LOVE Arabian horses. It’s been almost a lifetime passion!

What are three things you are most excited for or love most about U.S. Nationals? First and foremost, I am excited to spend time with family and friends. Nationals is like a big reunion with people we only see a few times a year, and getting to spend a week straight with family is always a big plus. I’m also excited to see the best horses in the country and the new, young stars.

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? We sadly lost my dad two years ago after a courageous battle with cancer, so getting to relive any horse show moment with him in it would be special. Horses have always been a family affair for us, and we miss getting to share every horse milestone with him.

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? I think honesty is an important asset in any business, and I feel so fortunate that Shan has always been open and honest about our horses. As breeders, it’s important to hear honest assessments of horses and I feel Shan always has the best interest of the horse and us in mind when making decisions.

I would encourage them to start taking lessons at a local barn and get to know the horses before going to shows. Getting them hooked early on the wonderful personalities of the horses is important, before they’re pushed to show.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

Not everyone may know that my husband, Flaco, is a professional polo player, so horses are a true family affair! His polo schedule often conflicts with the horse show schedule, which is why he unfortunately can’t make it to a lot of the shows.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? I would say that the Arabian is an extremely intelligent, sensitive and versatile animal. They are in many cases, a friend, confidante, healer and teacher. They promote a sense of community and camaraderie among the people who are lucky enough to love and enjoy them.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

No surprises here!

What are three things you are most excited for or love most about U.S. Nationals? I love the extreme competition, I love seeing friends accomplish what we’re all working so hard for—national title—and finally, I love the camaraderie between others who love the Arabian breed as much as I do!

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? My first win on CSP Crazy Vegaz in a class of 10!

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? My trainer is more than a trainer to me, he’s one of my best friends, a mentor and he’s brutally honest as the day is long and hot!

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? I’d invite them out to the barn to check it out.

CSP is always so welcoming and hospitable to everyone I’ve ever brought out, and that’s a lot of folks over the past 5 years!

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

My left arm is two inches shorter than my right! I broke my left arm twice as a kid at the growth plate. Needless to say, all my suits have to be tailored!

What are three things you are most excited for or love most about U.S. Nationals? U.S. Nationals is a culmination of hard work and dedication to the one passion that we share—Arabian horses!

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? The year 2016 was big for me professionally, and I owe a lot of that to EKS Alihandro and the team that surrounds him.

I will never forget the feeling of EKS Alihandro being crowned World Champion Senior Stallion and watching Giacomo Capacci ride him in the arena bareback to receive his award!

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? Claudinei Machado is a true horseman through and through! Whether he is schooling horses in the arena or we are galloping through the desert here in Scottsdale, it is magical to watch him; the horses truly respect him and, most importantly, enjoy their lives.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? Come with me, spend one day at the barn with these magnificent creatures and you too, will be hooked!

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

I ran anesthesia at an equine hospital here in Scottsdale for years after graduating college. I loved the adrenaline rush and the thrill of saving the lives of so many horses. I miss it!

FARM A FFILIATION : Colby Powell Performance Horses # of horses competing at U.S. Nationals… 1 What are three things you are most excited for or love most about U.S. Nationals? Watching my horse compete, supporting and cheering on everyone in the barn, and time away from work/school.

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? Watching Colby Powell win the Half-Arabian Western Pleasure Championship with Out West in 2017 at Nationals, and then at Scottsdale unanimously in 2018. Colby had broken his leg in-between those times, so it was special to watch him come back strong.

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? He is straight up, honest and to the point with his clients. I really respect his “tell it like it is” approach with everyone, rather than a “sugar-coated” mentality. Also, he isn’t in it for the money, but rather because he truly loves riding and being with Arabians every day.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? I would invite them out to the barn, introduce them to my horses and other barn-mates, and show them how fun it is to be part of the Arabian industry.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

I’m a second year Law student and am currently busy working at a firm and externing at a court, but on weekends I love helping out at the barn by grooming or taking care of my horses!

Cheering on our barn family, seeing the best competitors and their partners perform, and I’m most excited to be performing in my first U.S. Nationals.

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? My most cherished memory was the Legion of Honor presentation to my daughter Jennifer and Andrzy. Jen started riding him as a 3-year-old, and they grew together, working to the top.

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? We started out with LaRae Fletcher Powell and now have horses with both her sons. Colby Powell is in Scottsdale, AZ and Skyler Powell is in Auburn, WA. Both men are passionate in training both horse and rider. They both take after their mom ... 100%.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? Follow your heart and learn about the Arabian.

Be curious. Ask questions. People will help you. Just ask. No question is too silly. You are never too old to start riding.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

Being with my horses is being in “my happy place.” Hopefully, it brings out the best in me.

I love seeing old friends from across the country that I only get to see at U.S., making new friends, and getting to watch so many classes live. It gives me a chance to see the horses in detail and all at the same time, which the live stream just doesn’t allow you to do.

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? That’s like asking me to eat just one macadamia nut. No way could I do that! I guess that means I’m a really lucky girl.

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? Dwane is incredibly versatile. Many trainers have a niche, but Dwane trains national champions in every main ring division. Morgan and I are truly fortunate that we don’t have to have horses with different trainers and travel to ride them. And the attention and care our horses get is exemplary. No detail is overlooked, ever, for us and for the horses.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? I’d say, come to the barn! There is a smorgasbord of beautiful, talented horses in every division and wonderful barn mates who really are like family to us.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

I am a nerd. I won all of my school spelling bees and won a trip to the national spelling bee when I was 13. The elementary school librarian used to call me an egghead!

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? It would definitely be winning national champion on the same night that my twin sister also won.

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? They embody a true “family feel.” You always feel supported by the Chrishan Park family.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? Once you fall in love with your first Arabian and feel the excitement of being in the ring, there’s no going back. It’s a lifelong love. The Arabian horse experience transforms young people in so many positive ways. The environment is one that is uplifting, challenging and supportive.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you? I do yoga almost daily.

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? Priscilla: When I was in high school, I had the opportunity to meet Count Bazy at Ara-Nebra Ranch. He was truly magnificent and had just won national champion. He was beautiful, smart and playful.

We played hide and seek together in his corral and from then on, I have been in love with Arabians.

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? Colby Powell is set apart by his special rapport with horses and also for his deep love of the horses he trains.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? I would invite them to meet our horses, and encourage them to read many of the wonderful books on the history of the Arabian horse, as well as go to Arabian horse shows to see for themselves the versatility, beauty and personality of this magnificent breed.

1. Spending the week with my horse “family” and cheering on my barn mates.

2. Getting the opportunity to bond with my horse more. I don’t get to see him as much as I’d like as he lives across the country from me.

3. The atmosphere and seeing all of the talented horses across all disciplines.

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? Their genuine love of what they do.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? Have them contact Arabian owners and breeders in their area and spend time getting to know the Arabian horse.

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? When I won my first big title about 15 years ago. I won Scottsdale with my western horse at the time, Eightyniner, and I remember being so excited and shocked. It was in a deep class full of trainers’ kids and I was still relatively new to showing at the time.

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? Colby’s demeanor—he’s always cool, calm, and collected.

He’s driven and genuinely wants to see me and my horse succeed as a team. I value the one-on-one time he gives to me and Wes; he’s a great teacher!

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? I would tell people how much Arabians love their people and how wonderful the Arabian horse community is. I’ve met many lifelong friends over the past 20 years that are like family to me.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

I only show western right now, but I’m a bigger fan of riding hunter.

Although ... I think Wes has changed my viewpoint on that—he’s a special one!

What are three things you are most excited for or love most about U.S. Nationals? Seeing all my friends who I don’t get to see throughout the year, competing in (hopefully) large classes against the best horses in the country, and watching my friends and barn mates showing and cheering them on.

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? I have enjoyed lots of amazing wins with my horses throughout the years, but the high point would have to be winning my National Championship in 2017 with MS Dutch Chocolate. It was unexpected and thrilling, and I can never thank the Burkman Centre team enough for all they did to make it happen.

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? Stanley has exceeded all my expectations, Kharhartt and I have learned so much in the past two years—he gets better with every ride. He and Stephanie Sage also unlocked Kid Clay’s true talents, deciding his calling was as a hunter and she has done an awesome job in just eight months. Both are amazing!

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? I would tell them to visit some Arabian farms, meet the horses and spend some time with them. There are some great Academy programs out there to introduce riding and showing to both adults and kids; a wonderful place to start—and it CAN be affordable.

What are three things you are most excited for or love most about U.S. Nationals? Seeing the “finished product,” the horses I have watched train and show throughout the year. I also love showing in front of so many people and spending the entire week with my family and friends.

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? I would go back to watch my mom, Carmelle Rooker, show Apollopalooza in Louisville. I was pretty young when she showed him, so I would love to experience it again now, when I’m old enough to really appreciate it.

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? My parents’ attention to detail and Dalton’s competitive attitude.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? I would emphasize how smart Arabians are and how much personality they have. I think that really sets them apart from some other breeds. I would also invite them to attend a show to really get them hooked.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

Although I do not want to become a horse trainer, I would like to eventually take over my parents’ breeding program. I love the business aspect of running a horse farm!

Also, the Futurity and Maturity classes, as these horses are the up-and-coming stars of our industry! And just getting to be at U.S. is a joy!

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? I have so many incredible moments with so many different horses, I simply couldn’t pick just one! They are all my favorites, each for their own reasons!

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? Dwane has an impeccable understanding of the horse and rider bond, and the importance therein. He has a great talent for matching the right horse with the right person!

What are three things you are most excited for or love most about U.S. Nationals? It is a wonderful couple of weeks of exceptional horses and accomplished riders. There is great comradery among riders, trainers, friends and supporters. I love seeing people I only see once a year and my old friends I see more often. And, most importantly, it is all about excellent horses.

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? When my husband agreed to buying our farm and populating it with beautiful Arabian horses, and the night our first foal was born— both spectacular events.

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? Our trainer at home, Kevin Dwyer, is a gifted instructor.

He’s articulate and has helped in many ways, making me a better rider.

My trainer at Stachowski Farms is Peter Stachowski, who is obviously an excellent trainer and instructor. I am fortunate, indeed, to have the support I have.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? “Come to barn!” is always my first response! We participate in an annual, local parade to help introduce the Arabian to those who may not know much, or anything at all, about our amazing breed!

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? I would tell them about the history of the Arabian and how, as a breed, it has influenced every other light horse breed. For instance, every registered Thoroughbred lineage can be traced back to three Arabian stallions.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

While most know me as a very bubbly and outgoing person, I can be incredibly shy at times!

I discovered horses and began riding at age 40.

3. It’s Fall ... a change of seasons, cooler weather and a wonderful vacation.

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? It’s hard to pick one moment; so many come to mind. It’s always great to make the cut or win a class, but I think that some of my favorite moments have been just spending time in the barn with my horses and talking with them. They make great listeners.

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? Dwane Hankins is great with amateurs. He teaches and helps you to work with your horse and make you both perform at your best. He really knows the horses, and what it takes to give the horse and you the extra edge to take the roses.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? Arabian horses are a joy to be around. They love you unconditionally and are the most beautiful horses around.

I’m excited to ... trot into the ring and watch our other horses trot in too; watch so many wonderful horses compete, especially the young, up and coming ones; and spend time with friends and so many people who love the Arabian horse.

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? I am so grateful to have had a lot of moments—watching our daughter compete and go reserve at her first Youth Nationals is for sure, a highlight.

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? Their love and passion, and what they do for the horses is apparent. As a stallion owner just starting to breed, I am so appreciative of their knowledge, expertise and willingness to share.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? Attend some local shows and volunteer; it is such a great way to learn about the breed and meet lots of people. I would also encourage them to visit a couple of Arabian farms and take some lessons if they are able to.

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? The day that I was able to call Prosuasion mine was very special.

He has been a blessing in my life in so many ways and I wouldn’t trade that horse for the world!

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? Being able to show and present a horse well while performing at the best of their ability, and with the horse maintaining a willingness/want to do their job.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? I would encourage them to get involved with local lessons or and academy level program. I think those are great introductory levels to bring more people into our industry and help continue growth.

What are three things you are most excited for or love most about U.S. Nationals? Watching our homebred horse, Tap Out, perform, as he has already proven to be a special, great-thinking horse with amazing trainability and is always exciting and fun when you have bred them; getting back into the show ring and competing after three years; and watching the AEPA classes, which are always exciting!

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? I would have kept Expressamo. We sold him to a wonderful family, and looking back as a breeder, he was irreplaceable, but you can’t keep them all. He is one of those one-in-a-million horses I knew from the day he was born that he would be special. He was my heart horse.

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? Jon Ramsay is a workhorse! He never stops working, barely eats, or takes vacation. He lives, eats and breathes horses.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? That’s easy! I do it all the time! I invite them to visit our ranch for an up close and personal experience. Newcomers love to see them at liberty!

What is something people would be surprised to know about you? My barns and horses are cleaner than my house, LOL! No housekeeper. J

I’m super excited to get to show two outstanding horses that my family bred at my very first U.S. Nationals! Having gone to watch lots of years in the past, I love it there because it has a great atmosphere, competitive new and old horses, and you get to see your friends you don’t see often.

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? When I first won at Youth Nationals on my horse “Fire.”

I was shocked because it was the first time I had ever been there.

I don’t think I realized how big of a deal it was at the time, I was just happy to be there!

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? They are both really in tune with the horse and do what is best for them in the long run.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? I would say that Arabians are different from other horses because they have the capacity to really connect with people and can feel and show emotions. They can also be smaller, which I think is less intimidating for some people.

Hanging out with friends, watching the horses I’ve been a part of creating compete and cheering them on, and enjoying a cocktail or two!

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? Winning the Calcutta Unanimously at Region 10 with Psymply Psylver J. A homebred horse, he was trained by my husband and we had an amazing go. The pressure of being bid on was such a rush. To top it off, my brother-in-law happened to be the winning number and donated the money all back.

Seeing people that I have known since childhood back in the arena, creating new memories with friends and family, and experiencing all of the amazing horses in this industry. Nationals is a grand stage but also full of laughter and fun!

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? Watching my daughter’s face when we surprised her with her very first Arabian on Christmas morning. The pure joy and excitement in that moment was something I will never forget.

My husband, mother and I, worked really hard to keep that secret and it was an amazing experience. Happy tears flowed!

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? Chris Wilson has a very special ability to recognize and develop talent in young horses. He also has an amazing skill for understanding pedigrees and the best dams/sires to achieve fantastic results.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? I would say to jump in with both feet! Arabians are beautiful, intelligent and athletic horses, and can do just about anything a rider would ever want to try. There is a horse for every person!

What is something people would be surprised to know about you? I vowed at the ripe old age of 18 that I would never ride or show again, as I was completely burnt out from my junior riding experience. I had not even sat on a show horse in over 30 years until April 2019. My daughter dared me to ride her mare, and look at me now, showing at Nationals!

I’m most excited to see all my friends from all over the country; seeing the national arena decorated with green shavings on the final weekend; and watching all the horses compete for the national champion title. It’s Tulsa time ... get in the bubble!

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? I would relive working for Chris at Cedar Ridge in 1999 when he showed Matoi to a Unanimous National Championship in the Arabian Open Park. Matoi will forever be one of my most favorite horses. No horse had the heart to compete like he did. They were magical that night, true champions.

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? Chris is a perfectionist. When his horses are finished, they are equivalent to driving a Ferrari. You can take them anywhere you want in the arena and they are with you every single step. They know their place in the bridle and they know what is expected of them when you call on them.

I would recommend they walk into the horse stalls and get close to them. Once you encounter an Arabian and witness their affection and intelligence, you are hooked. I would also encourage them to watch them perform. Arabians give their all, each and every time they enter the show arena.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you? I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and taught Elementary school until three weeks before I gave birth to Annabelle. I chose that profession because I wanted kids to believe they could achieve any dream they set their minds to.

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? Maghnus Z+// and I winning the 2018 U.S. National H/A Stock/Hunter Gelding AAOTH Championship by unanimous decision. Recalling that moment still gives me goosebumps!

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? If approached at a horse show, I would invite them into our barn and introduce them to the horses, giving them some background information on each horse and the discipline they compete in. If available, I would offer them a copy of AHTimes to further pique their interest in our amazing Arabians.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you? I started a nonprofit and raised over $4,000 to help horses in Florida injured during Hurricane Andrew. And I would really like to meet Derek Jeter!

PAHA Hall of Fame Breeders, Frank and Sara Chisholm, will host their first ever Platinum Sale of Arabian horses. An auction of 45 horses from their renowned collection will be offered with full transparency, in both a live stage and online auction.

Why have an Auction? “Why not?” says owner Frank Chisholm. “Everyone deserves the chance to own a quality horse at a fair price, and that’s what we are offering. We are celebrating 20 years in the industry, and what better way than to showcase our barn aisles and have a party!” Anyone who knows the Chisholms, know their southern hospitality is ingrained in their farm, so a weekend under the palm trees surrounded by National Champions past, present and in the making, makes for an epic event.

The collection consists of both up-and-coming youngsters, with a selection of proven broodmares, including some of the farm’s prized Sundance Kid V daughters. “These mares have done so well for us, and they deserve the opportunity to continue their contribution to the breed. Our program simply doesn’t

allow us to use them back into our gene pool, so we will be thrilled to watch them produce for other breeders,” says breeding manager Sarah O’Brien. “As hard as it is to let them go, we know those who see their value will be honored to own them.” Ten of these mares will sell in foal for a 2020 arrival sired by a Palmetto stallion.

As for the youngsters, the group highlights 15 yearlings and 11 two-yearolds. The majority of colts and fillies are sired by Palmetto’s hallmark breeding stallions Sundance Kid V, Always A Jullyen V, PA Kid Khan, PA Phoenix Kid and SF Sir Real. Coming off a year when PA Kid Khan led the AWPA $100,000 Futurity, this group is deep in quality and boasts a coveted selection of bloodstock.

Not to be left out, four have been well started under saddle with Rob Bick and Caralyn Schroter. They have approximately a year’s experience under their girth, ready for their next step in life.

The Platinum Auction will offer a spectrum of price ranges and opportunity. “We simply couldn’t put all 45 across a live stage in one night, so 16 of them will be offered in an online auction,” says Sarah. “It will begin on Thursday, the 7th of November and end Sunday, November 10th, at noon Eastern time.” The 16 online are the only horses with reserves. A minimum bid of $500 will start their price and be live throughout the weekend. For those who maybe do not end up the winning bidder on Saturday night, will still have a chance at picks online.

How long have you been involved in the Arabian horse industry and in what areas? I bought my first Arabian as a kid in 4-H. It wasn’t until 2013 that I got actively involved in the Arabian horse industry. I’ve competed in almost every division so far, from halter and sport horse to western pleasure and working hunters.

Do you have a career (not precluding parenting!) outside the Arabian horse industry? If so, how fulf illing is your involvement in this community to offset the stresses of ‘the real world’ for you? Please rate between 1 (not fulf illing) and 10 (very fulf illing). Currently I’m giving our community a 5. I think we need a lot more communication from our registry and more participation from our members. We forget that “we” are AHA,

so the change starts with us, from rules to show trends and everything in between. This is an expensive hobby. Gayle Lampe taught a camp one year where she said, “It starts becoming expensive when it stops becoming fun.” I truly think if we don’t lose sight of that, our industry will survive.

As a parent, what insights do you have for ways we can more effectively reach today’s increasingly urbanized and technology-focused youth for Arabian horses? I’m a mom to three young boys. My oldest plays on a traveling soccer team, and on an average weekend, there’s easily 2,500+/parents and kids at the fields where he plays. The biggest difference between horses and soccer is access to the sport. Soccer teams are easily accessed through local park and recreation centers. The horse industry needs to focus on joining with those centers to give parents an easy option to sign-up their horse crazy kids.

I would not have lasted in the Real Estate industry for 23 years had it not been for my horses and a fast ride across the ridge tops! I would rate my experiences a 10 in the Arabian horse community as it relates to the stresses in the “real world,” and helping handle those stresses. If you are a parent, what insights do you have for ways we can more effectively reach today’s increasingly urbanized and technology-focused youth for Arabian horses? I am not a parent, but I am a Godparent.

The public schools in our area have equestrian riding clubs and earlyrelease programs for kids that intern/work on horse farms. We have had some great young people grow up working at the farm through these programs and go on to be involved in the general horse industry. So, I think getting our schools involved with these types of programs is huge and I also think having parents that are committed to having active, well rounded kids is essential.

Anything else you’d like to add that we haven’t covered? I absolutely love all of the non-pleasure classes that are being added to our shows. I think these classes are going to give another avenue for the amateur to compete and not feel like they have to break-the-bank to do so. And, I think these classes show the athleticism of our great breed!

How long have you been involved in the Arabian horse industry and in what areas? My family and I have been involved in the Arabian horse industry for over 20 years. We mainly compete in the saddle seat performance divisions, as well as have a small breeding program aimed toward performance horses.

What insights do you have for ways we can more effectively reach today’s increasingly urbanized and technology-focused youth for Arabian horses? I think with today’s technology, we actually have an opportunity to reach more youth than ever before. But, in order to do that, we have to create an affordable way for youth to get into the sport and compete at any level they choose to.

How long have you been involved in the Arabian horse industry and in what areas? My parents were breeders and trainers of Arabian horses, so my involvement started very young. As an adult, I compete in English and reining and have a small group of horses that I breed every year.

What things (if any) discourage or dissatisfy you? Drama. And the inability for us to successfully market our Arabian horse outside of ourselves.

What insights do you have for ways we can more effectively reach today’s increasingly urbanized and technology-focused youth for Arabian horses? We have to think differently. We have to meet them where they are. We have to find our stories and find ways to have others share those stories. We have never treated the Arabian horse as a brand and effectively marketed the brand. Every breed is struggling with reaching kids. There is no longer a farm right down the road for kids to go to take riding lessons. And there is, increasingly, more pressure from animal rights organizations. Those are the realities. But we have never truly put a plan in place to market the Arabian horse (not the association) to kids and parents. Without a plan, we are just flapping in the wind.

How long have you been involved in the Arabian horse industry and in what areas? I am pretty new to the Arabian world. I started working for a larger halter breeding farm in June 2015. I guess I jumped in feet-first because I fell in love with the breed and have really enjoyed competing with them. Under saddle, I have shown in western and hunter pleasure, show hack, sport horse (in-hand and under saddle), ranch riding, native costume, English trail and ranch riding. The diversity has really made me grow as a rider.

How long have you been involved in the Arabian horse industry and in what areas? Forty-eight years ago, my first amazing Half-Arabian horse came into my life. I’ve competed in English, western and side saddle, and three years ago, became active in Arabian racing.

How fulf illing is your involvement in this community to offset the stresses of ‘the real world’ for you? Our Region (3), through several clubs and organizations, offers a variety of youth programs, shows, clinics and clubs to encourage participation in horse activities and gives support in different disciplines across all ages.

In the Arabian horse industry, what things most satisfy and fulf ill you as the hobby you’ve chosen to invest your time and resources in? Put another way, what elements keep this the most fun for you? My favorite aspect is the diversity. These horses do EVERYTHING! I have grown rapidly as a rider because I am learning how to go back and forth through all these different disciplines.

Conversely, what things (if any) discourage or dissatisfy you? I hate to say it, but I really dislike the elitism. There are a lot of people in the Arabian world who want to keep these horses to themselves and not share them in open competition. I come from the Eventing world, and for the longest time, I thought Arabians were crazy, hot and untalented because the ones you do see in open competitions are often not the best the breed has to offer. The good ones are hidden at breed shows and even when we were exposed to the nice ones, it’s often halter horses that are beautiful, but they look hot and ill-mannered.

In another category, Arabian Horse Racing in California has the support and guidance of ARAC, the non-profit organization dedicated to aiding, growing and enhancing this industry.

Four years ago, The Pleasanton Arabian Racing Club came into existence with the goal of promoting this sport by giving its members the opportunity to own horses for the term of the racing season in California. This concept has been very successful in bringing back to the Arabian horse scene individuals who no longer were participating in horse activities or who had never owned a horse.

How long have you been involved in the Arabian horse industry and in what areas? We’ve been involved in the industry since the first Marquise Auction in February 2017 when we purchased Oula Aljassimya. We were going to have her mostly as a riding horse, but things evolved quickly. Ale started showing her in amateur halter, then in bigger, more-important shows and now we have a small breeding program.

As a parent, what insights do you have for ways we can more effectively reach today’s increasingly urbanized and technology-focused youth for Arabian horses? We are parents of a 13-year-old boy and an 11-yearold girl, and we are in a constant struggle to limit screen times. We try to encourage them to bond with our horses and be around them as often as possible, teaching them the responsibility that we have to them. Involving them in everything concerning our horses and breeding program, I think, keeps them interested (including cleaning stalls). Also, sports and being outdoors helps.

As a riding instructor, what insights do you have for ways we can more effectively reach today’s increasingly urbanized and technology-focused youth for Arabian horses? Arabian horses are the perfect breed for today’s youth because they’re so versatile. Young riders love to be able to enjoy a variety of disciplines from saddle seat to gymkhana–all on the same horse. I know of no other breed that can do that.

Conversations with Chestnuthill Arabians owner Joe Alberti overflow with thoughtful passion and knowledge, carving a continuous path of learning and love of life. He is the true embodiment of the title phrase above.

Chestnuthill Arabians and its clientele will be proudly presenting 13 In-Hand and Performance purebred and Half-Arabian horses at Tulsa’s 2019 U.S. Nationals.

Joe has been a fixture in the Arabian horse industry for well over 20 years, always conveying a perspective that is fresh, exuberant, giving and direct, yet kind. His zest for life created Chestnuthill Arabians, a full-service operation where “open gate” policy has firmly established a community of happy horses and gratified owners.

Born and raised in the Bronx borough of New York City, Joseph “Joe” R. Alberti II, was an only child, the son of a hard-working banker. Seeking serenity away from the city, Joe’s father acquired a small farm in Pennsylvania where the family would spend their weekends, and horses quickly became a slice of this part-time lifestyle. Joe looks back, “Actually, my passion for horses didn’t begin with our first horses. They were grade horses, calm and placid. Yes, we would ride out in the countryside and I enjoyed it, but I also remember thinking if my father loves this rural life so much, why does he only spend two days a week enjoying it? Then and there I knew I would create a life for myself that I would love seven days a week, not two!” The pieces of this life-making puzzle came together a bit later when Joe discovered Arabian horses. Joe recalls, “When we acquired our first Arabian horse (for $500!), my newfound passion for horses hit me like a ton of bricks! The Arabian breed has such a rich history, interwoven with humans for countless centuries.

Arabian horses are so fancy, and flighty, yet intelligent, kind and calm. In the desert, these horses lived in the tent with their human families. What other breed of horse can attest to this?”

During boyhood, Joe sought every book, magazine, movie and resource he could find to learn more about Arabian horses. At age 14, Joe knew training Arabian horses was his chosen career.

The original Chestnuthill Arabians was established in Pennsylvania. Hard work and dedication led to national recognition, but Joe sought more.

Moving southward in 2010 to work at Florida’s world renowned Rohara Arabians opened opportunities to broaden knowledge, experience and global exposure.

Five years later, Joe returned back on his own, building a new Chestnuthill Arabians in the midst of Ocala, Florida, a world-class equine epicenter. Easily reached from Orlando and Tampa airports, the farm was thoughtfully created with lush pastures, dozens of large, luxurious stalls, a covered arena, a EuroXsizer, and breeding lab (the farm does its own collection and shipping).

Chestnuthill provides state-of-the-art marketing services, skills Joe integrates and keeps current combined with wise horse knowledge. Overseas sales have further attracted global attention to Chestnuthill horses and their clientele.

“Chestnuthill Arabians exhibits the crowning glory of a ’24/7 obsession,’” Joe acknowledges. “Horses create patience, and patience creates rich rewards in its journey. Over the years, this journey has given me great fortune to show multiple purebred and Half-Arabian horses to the winner’s circle multiple times over multiple years.” Joe’s gratification is directed not only to the many wins earned by horses such as Maghnus Z, Shaddofax, Shaddo Magniphied and ZA Magnumoiselle MTC, but equally so, to their love of their job. Joe elaborates further, “Downtime for our horses is huge in our operation. Pasture time at Chestnuthill is as important as the training program. Keeping our horses fresh keeps them well mannered. A consistent, clear training program cultivates and maintains confidence. Our horses know their job and love to perform.”

A tireless worker himself, Joe expects the same horse obsession from his staff.

“I seek people who work for the love of the horse and will do anything for them.

After all, that’s why we are all here.”

Skill in the show pen certainly attracts clients, but this isn’t the only factor. “I’m honest and I’m frank,” Joe is candid. “I will never tell a client their horse is great when it’s not, and I am good at knowing a horses’ ability. It’s so important to let the horse tell you what it wants to do. Horses are no different than humans, in that encouraging them to do what they love will make them successful. Our clientele is drawn to this.”

Client Rich Sadala agrees, elaborating, “I have observed Chestnuthill’s philosophy to present the horses in the best condition, health and mind. I’ve known Joe for two decades or more; a long time. Chestnuthill horses seem more relaxed, well-conditioned, and show extremely sharp, giving all their attention to Joe during their halter presentation standup. We have had many different experiences with Joe, mostly good and a few sad ones just like in most lives. His management and love of Adonis GA (miracle tetanus horse) was present from his unwavering belief in saving his life. Today, Adonis is well, showing and breeding. This is, in my opinion, a great testament to Joe never giving up.”

Rich adds with a smile, “I’ll be at U.S. Nationals this year watching Joe present our 2018 filly Truly Marvelous H. Along with the competition, we always include some time to have fun.”

Staff also “light up” when talking about Chestnuthill. Assistant trainer Stefanie Simonsen joined Joe to start up the Chestnuthill, Ocala operation. Stefanie schools and shows the In-Hand and Hunter disciplines. As competitive as Joe, Stefanie proudly shares her first U.S. National showing experience, highlighted by winning reserve alongside Joe’s championship title. Still, she is just as emphatic describing the Chestnuthill day-to-day operation. “Tranquility is the word that extolls our barn philosophy,” Stefanie maintains. “This translates to winning, as our horses are very eager to do their jobs. Chestnuthill has a caregiving culture for human and horse. Joe puts our horses first as do I.” Stefanie examples multiple national champion Maghnus Z, “When the rig pulls up, Maghnus is always at his stall window, ready to get on the trailer and go to the next show (he only shows a couple times a year). He actually pouts when the realization sinks in that he’s not going this time!”

And Stefanie’s assessment of Joe? “When I’m behind the scenes, people compliment Joe. He always has a smile on his face, is always positive, always forward thinking.

Chestnuthill Arabians moves ahead continually confident in its progression. Joe puts his heart and soul into Chestnuthill. I’m proud to be by his side.”

There are two sides to everyone. For Joe, the other is life partner Rob Janecki.

Identically matched in possessing a “game-on attitude,” Rob laughs as he describes his first horse experience. “I met Joe in 1998. He was doing telemarketing and was my boss! One day Joe invited me to come to a show in which he was competing. Mind you, I too am from New York City, one of six kids, raised in Brooklyn. However, I had never been around horses. So here I am at this horse show, taking it all in when one of Joe’s friends asks if I can help.

Sure, I replied. Next thing I knew, I was told, Go grab a halter and get that horse. My reply was a question, Uh, what is a halter? Then and there, horses came into my life and I’ve never looked back.” Rob shares more nostalgia, ‘My first horse was Rohara Canali. I bought him as a yearling, showing him In-Hand and in Hunter competition, with much of his career winning at the regional and national level. Gelded later in life, today, 21-year-old Rohara Canali lives in a Chestnuthill pasture, loving his life and his part time job as an in-hand lesson horse.” Rob acknowledges, “Though I didn’t grow up with horses, now I cannot imagine life without them. Joe and I want everyone’s dream to come true here at Chestnuthill, whether it’s winning at the national level, local level or realizing their mare just delivered a stellar foal.” Today Rob is a marketing expert with a national billboard firm, linking the expertise of his formal career with his beloved Arabian horses. And another Janecki sibling has come into the world of Arabian horses. Rob is delighted to describe brother Patrick’s third ever horse show competition, 2019 Canadian Nationals, where he showed Pharaoh CRF to a reserve championship in Arabian Stallions AOTH. Horse or human family, Rob and Joe’s life at Chestnuthill is a superb balance of horse show training and bucolic surroundings. Rob confesses, “I love seeing the mares and babies in pasture. Happy horses give us a happy, fulfilled homelife.”

Long-time client Maddy Winer agrees, “We acquired Maghnus Z from Joe. I quickly realized Joe’s innate talent of working in a way to improve the connection to you and your horse. When Joe went out on his own, we followed.”

Maddy smiles, “Maghnus Z is approaching his teens, one of the winningest Arabian horses ever of over two dozen national champion and reserve champion titles. We still show Maghnus a couple times a year, as he loves every minute of it. He is my one in a million horse, lighting up with flare and sparkle in the show pen, yet kind and calm during downtime. The minute Maghnus hears my voice, he nickers and whinnies his greetings, testimony to Chestnuthill’s care. The 2019 U.S. Nationals will see Maghnus Z, amateur handler Maddy, and Joe “going again” for the roses, to repeat 2018’s U.S. Nationals unanimous championships in Half-Arabian Gelding Stock/Hunter AAOTH and Half-Arabian Gelding Stock/Hunter 3 & Over.

Newly acquired 2011 purebred bay gelding Marvellous Xceptshahn makes his Chestnuthill U.S. Nationals debut showing with Maddy and Joe in Amateur and Open In-Hand competition. This following a triumphant unanimous 2019 Canadian Nationals AOTH championship title with Maddy and a unanimous reserve championship with Joe. Maddy’s assessment of Chestnuthill is simple, “Joe always gives us a positive spin. He addresses every bug-a-boo. This makes us confident and prepared at our shows. We hit the ring feeling good about ourselves as do our horses. We love the Chestnuthill show and barn life. Best of all, Joe’s horses equally love him at both.”

Hospitality and Chestnuthill Arabians go hand-in-hand. This community truly gives as good as it gets, always keeping out the welcome mat. Longtime client Matt Murray says Chestnuthill exemplifies this, “I was regional champion a few times and champion at Scottsdale with multiple horses. In 2012, I was slated to show AOTH Stallion Halter at U.S., but just weeks before, I was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma Cancer.

“While I was lying in a bed at M D Anderson, near death, Joe took my stallion to U.S. and was named U.S. National Champion Stallion. I will never forget him for that.

Focusing more on my health has taken me out of the daily grind, but rest assured, Joe and I are far from over. He left me a message a few weeks ago, I got you a room at Tulsa. Mind you, I don’t have a horse that I own going and have nothing in training, but ... I have a room, because that’s the way Joe rolls. Some trainers keep it all about them; not Joe. He always kept it all about me.”

Chestnuthill’s coaching tactics are personified by Kristine Nolan’s enthused words, “My relationship with Joe Alberti and the Chestnuthill Arabians team has truly changed my life for the better. It’s no secret that I’ve always been fairly quiet and introverted, but Joe has helped instill great confidence in me as both a rider/handler and as a woman. He pushes me to be a better version of myself in and out of the show ring, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without his encouragement and friendship.

Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to share many special experiences with Joe and my Chestnuthill family. Like many Arabian horse owners, I dreamed that someday I’d have a National Champion. In 2016, that dream became a reality when Joe showed my gelding, Expectations SS, to a national championship win in the Arabian Junior Geldings class. Lifetime horse owner and amateur handler Ann Cranmer Gauntlett is new to the Arabian horse show world, competing when she isn’t engulfed in her admirable career as a Molecular Biologist. Looking forward to the U.S. Nationals, Ann is showing her 2015 purebred grey mare Sofia CDA in the Amateur Mare Breeding competition and with Joe in the Open. Ann professes, “I’ve just started showing in the halter classes, having a long span of time since my childhood local horse show experiences in California. I knew of Joe from his former Chestnuthill, Pennsylvania operation, and later meeting him when building my home in Ocala.” Ann’s “ah ha” moment came early when Joe frankly stated to Ann that Sofia CDA wasn’t ready for competition at Scottsdale earlier this year. Ann was impressed, stating, “Joe would have made good money taking Sofia to Scottsdale. Still, he prioritized the horse over the dollar.

Sofia was ready a few months later for Region 15, winning the Open Mares with Joe and Reserve in Mares AOTH with me. I love being a part of Chestnuthill Arabians— the barn, the clients, showing ... the whole experience.”

Joe Alberti embraces the big view of the Arabian horse industry, knowing this is key to its future. Exampling the 2019 U.S. Nationals, Joe states, “We must get back to what I call ‘useable horses.’ Yes, not all horses can achieve both In-Hand and Performance success at the highest levels, but we must give them a chance. We plan to exemplify this at U.S., having entered our 4-year-old stallion, Pharaoh CRF, in In-Hand and AHPA purebred competition. Chestnuthill has shown horses to halter and performance national titles, and we seek to continue on this path, honoring the unique Arabian horse’s diversity.” Joe adds, “I see a real benefit to upcoming performance halter classes. This is an inviting entry for new people to our breed. I have a half dozen clients excited to show in performance halter at the 2020 U.S. Nationals.

Joe concludes with outspoken sincerity, “Arabian horses invite drama by their sheer beauty. Let’s always channel that drama to horse show excitement! I envision one bringing their ‘Aunt Tillie’ to U.S. Nationals, seating her in the final Saturday night stands, and watching her whoop, whistle and cheer with the crowd, knowing in her non-horse world heart, that she has just witnessed a big deal event. We always want people to come away saying, ‘I want to do this!’”
