Glorious Fall—It’s Just Too Much Fun In our breed, each season has unique features, and with Arabians I’m tempted to call every one my favorite (we are so lucky!), but as we near the end of the year, late Summer and Fall illustrate just how incredible our horses and our community are.

In our last issue, we highlighted the Canadian Nationals. What makes this show so special to me is that we come together in such a “tight” area to celebrate our horses. At many large shows, the expansive fairgrounds mean that it’s hard to attend all the classes you’d like to. At the Keystone Centre, in Brandon, Manitoba, we use only two rings, so you can enjoy all kinds of competition that are only on your wish list at other events.

You just can’t miss the versatility of the breed! Also, it’s really apparent how well we can all get along—at this show, we see a lot of each other, people are super friendly, and there is a lot of joking around. For years I have said that the Canadian Nationals is one of my favorite shows, and after going back this year, I’m reminded of why I feel that way.

Then we’re on to October, to what for United States residents is the granddaddy of all the shows, the U.S. Nationals*. We all work through the year in preparation for these eight days in Tulsa, and to everyone, I say, “Be proud of everything you have accomplished to get here.” Remember that that alone makes you a winner, whether or not you carry home a ribbon or a trophy. And please, also remember not to be negative. As the old saying goes, “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.” And above all, appreciate the moment! If you’re lucky enough to win a big silver trophy, enjoy it—and if you don’t, keep dreaming. Competition, testing yourself and your horse, is what it’s all about, and next October will be here before you know it.

Finally, I love that it is Fall, with its vivid colors, cool mornings and evenings, and most of all, its generous offering of time to spend with Arabian horses. If trail riding is your thing, there is no better time to do it. If you are into horse shows, there are several every weekend throughout North America. And if you enjoy young horses, this is the time to see them growing up; if you have foals, they are getting weaned and learning to become adults, and if you have 2-year-olds, you can evaluate their future.

This really is the best time of the year—embrace and enjoy! *On an historical note, the title of “granddaddy” is open to debate. Canada was the first to hold national classes, in 1957; the U.S. offered its first national classes a year later, but in 1967, was able to begin its own stand-alone national show, eight years ahead of its northern neighbor. Whatever the bragging rights, Arabian horse owners have loved them both.

Beloveds Farm: The Heart of Home

By Theresa Cardamone Beloveds Farm is a 160-acre, serene paradise of beautiful pastures and majestic trees in Central Florida. Boutique barns dot the landscape, with adjacent pastures providing abundant space for grazing and play.

The idyllic scene is pure tranquility with the physical and mystical elements that constitute the heart of Home. There is a sense of being embraced and secure, a stability that builds confidence and serves as a launching pad for great achievements out in the world. Pat has created an ideal environment to breed and raise a remarkable collection of animals. Be it purebred Arabians, Miniatures or Alpaca—all have proven themselves to be world class.

Upon entering the main gate, it is a common sight to see a couple of former champion Arabian show horses scratching each other’s backs as they sigh with pleasure. The gracefully aging grey mare is AP Sheez Sassy, an own daughter of Bey Shah, who won a U.S. top ten as a yearling in 1995. Her pasture mate, Via Donna, earned a top ten of her own as a 3-year-old in 2013. They have long since retired from the show ring and are among the handful of foundation mares Pat selected for the Beloveds Farm breeding program. Both have produced exceptional daughters: Sassy is the dam of 2016 U.S. National Champion Yearling Filly, Beloved Gracious Lady; Via is the mother of 2018 Region 15 Champion Sport Horse Under Saddle, Beloveds Via Luna and her full sister, Scottsdale class winner and 2015 Region 12 Top Four Yearling Filly, Beloveds Viateyna.

On the other side of the driveway, Magnums Angel JD+ and her best friend MarcAlyssa (Missy) have taken it upon themselves to serve as official greeters whenever guests drive through the gate. Successful show horses in years past, they have provided Pat with a half-dozen highly decorated offspring between them in just three years. Angel is out of the RSD Dark Victory daughter, OFW Heaven Sent, and is by Magnum Psyche. She is five times a National Top Ten Mare in addition to being both an East Coast and Regional champion. A rich red-bay with black points, she is a sharp contrast to the flea-bitten grey of her younger pasture mate, Missy.

Before becoming a mother, Missy was four times a U.S. Top Ten in halter and was also the 2015 Scottsdale International Bronze Champion Mare and the Unanimous 2013 Region 12 Champion Two-Year-Old Filly. The mares have become close companions over the years, although they each believe that their own children are just a bit better than those of their friend!

Mikers had become a sensation in the Arabian business when Pat bought her at auction in February 2017 for $1.55 million. In Paris, the joyous entourage flooded into the ring to celebrate the outcome as Mikers won her class to qualify for the Finale and came away with the trophy for Most Beautiful Head. With a stretchy elegance that she has yet to fully grow into, she returned to the Finale to earn the title and awards of 2017 World Bronze Champion Yearling Filly.

2018 Arabian Breeders World Cup— Las Vegas, Nevada Over the past ten years, the Arabian Breeders World Cup (ABWC) has become an increasingly important international venue, in part because it adheres to a universally accepted scoring system. In the case of this show, what happens in Vegas is broadcast far and wide since an ABWC championship is greatly valued around the world.

In April 2018, Pat sent a trio of her finest horses to compete in Las Vegas for a few of those coveted titles. Joining Gracie and Mikers to fly the flag of Beloveds Farm was Beloveds Marc One (Mayo) who, like Gracie, is a homebred. A son of Pat’s Beloved One NA+ (known as “Beau”), Mayo would be making his show debut.

Mikers had earned the ABWC Gold Champion Yearling Filly title the previous year and had a tough section of 2-year-old challengers to face in order to qualify for the Junior Mare Championship in 2018.

She had grown several inches over the winter and spring, adding to her already elegant length of neck and long, graceful legs. She had also grown in confidence, commanding the judges’ attention with every Mayo

movement, captivating them with her refinement and abundance of Arabian type. As always, she followed Ted Carson’s lead.

To no one’s surprise, Mikers was named the ABWC Champion TwoYear-Old Filly with a score of 785.5 points, a figure which would prove to hold up as the High Score of the entire show. Included in that total was a perfect score of 140 for Head…that means all seven judges each gave a perfect 20. No other horse could make such a claim, which gave Mikers the High Score for Head award. Her score for type was almost as high, coming in at 138.5 and earning her yet another High Score trophy, this time for Type.

“That’s what I’m talking about,” she whinnied, pleased to see that Mikers’ fine performance had resulted in such fantastic scores. “Now, it’s my turn!” she snorted, eager to contribute to the glory of Beloveds Farm.

Gracious Lady’s spectacular motion had stolen the breath and the hearts of the audience at the Salon du Cheval and had made her the most talked-about horse in Paris. Gracie did not disappoint her fans, turning up the heat to not only win the ABWC High Score for Movement trophy with a near-perfect 138, but also the Three-Year-Old Mare Championship with 783 points, the second highest score of the entire show, (topped only by Mikers). That set Mikers and Gracie up to compete against each other for the first time in the Supreme Championship for Junior Mares.

about. Mikers stretched her neck around to show off her profile, more than a little enamored of all the attention. She turned to Gracie. “It’s showtime, sister!” she said playfully.

The class went off without a hitch, both of the young mares showing themselves beautifully. The judges’ decision was imminent. With such high-quality horses present in the class, there was no telling what the final result would be. While relaxing on the rail, Mikers and Gracie spotted Pat watching from the stands. “Look! There’s Mom!” Mikers exclaimed. She gave a tug on the halter lead, anxious to reach up for a pet from Pat. “This is such fun,” Gracie chortled, smearing Pat’s outfit with her shiny, oily muzzle.

The judges’ decision was announced; Mikers had been named the Supreme Gold Champion Junior Mare. As the entire group gathered around the huge, colorful trophy saddle, the filly looked at it with interest. “This saddle is fancy,” she said, “But it won’t be sitting on my back anytime soon!”

In the World Cup Championship for yearling colts, Mayo represented himself and the farm brilliantly. In his very first show, he earned a top five—finishing fourth out of 21 competitors. Gracie and Mikers had become very fond of their stablemate during the long van ride from Ted Carson’s training stable in North Carolina. They watched as he took his first strides into the arena, seeming to float over the ground rather than digging into the loamy footing. “He is so graceful!” sighed Mikers.

“And he catches so much air!” Gracie nickered in agreement.

Beau is batting 1,000 as a juvenile sire, with 100% of his foals earning at least a regional championship.

Such consistency of progeny is required of any notable sire, which Beau has proven without a doubt to be. As their many Regional wins will attest, Beau’s offspring have consistently risen to the top of their class. Their uniformity is astonishing. Since they were all bred by Pat at Beloveds Farm, it speaks to the knowledge and insights that make her a master breeder. As Pat acknowledges, “Your EYES tell you what a stallion APPEARS to be. Playing a large part in that result are the offspring of Beau, Beloveds Farm’s superstar stallion. At the Region 12 Championship show, Mayo followed up his victory in Las Vegas with another that put feathers in the caps of both himself and his sire, Beau. With Ted Carson—who manages all of the Beloveds Farm show horses—flying along beside him, Mayo was named the Region 12 Champion Yearling Colt.

It was another endorsement for Beau, who has a sterling show record himself. He was the unanimous 2015 Canadian National Champion Two-Year-Old Colt and was also the U.S. Reserve Champion Junior Stallion and Two-Year-Old Colt, earning his Legion of Honor title in the process.

Mayo’s paternal half-sister, Beloveds Earth Angel, also represented her father well, earning the Unanimous Spotlight Futurity Champion Two-YearOld Filly title under the capable hands of amateur handler Michaiah Carson, Ted’s teenage daughter.

Earth Angel was also the Unanimous Champion Two-Year-Old Filly in the Open competition. In addition, Mayo’s year-older full sister, Beloveds One Blessing, was beautifully shown by another talented amateur, Lisa Gaudio, winning the Unanimous Reserve Championship in the Spotlight Futurity and bringing home the Unanimous Reserve Champion Two-Year-Old Filly honors in the Open class. In his very first show, Earth Angel’s full brother, Beloveds ArchAngel (Dude) faced 20 other yearling colts in his class, making his Reserve Champion Sweepstakes Yearling Colt title even more impressive.

Beloved Joy to Behold, a half-sister to Mayo and Blessing, was awarded the 2018 Region 12 Champion Mare title over all others after she already earned the 2017 Region 12 Unanimous Two-Year-Old Filly Championship and previous regional and national honors including 2016 Unanimous Canadian National Champion Sweepstakes Yearling Filly. Beloved MarcAngelo, a QR Marc son out of Angel, lit up the show ring to become the Reserve Champion Stallion. Angelo had previously won the 2016 Region 12 Unanimous Champion Two-YearOld Colt award on his way to his 2016 U.S. National Champion Two-Year-Old title.

Missy could hardly wait to pass on the news she had just gleaned from a conversation she overheard. “Angel!” she called. “Beau’s and my son Mayo won the yearling colt championship!”

Angel nodded her head in appreciation. “I have news too,” she said. “Beau’s and my son Dude won the sweepstakes reserve championship! And not only that, his sister Earth Angel was the Unanimous Champion Two-Year-Old Filly!”

“Congratulations!” Missy offered. “And did you hear that my two-year old daughter Blessing was the Spotlight Futurity Reserve Champion?” They paused to smile slyly at each other, each hoping they were looking nonchalant. “Well done,” said Angel, before turning to head back toward the barn. She stopped to look back at Missy before adding, “I did hear that my son Angelo is now the Region 12 Reserve Champion Stallion.” Missy snorted as she followed Angel’s lead and moved down the gentle slope. “Three champions at one Regionals…that’s quite an achievement…Of course, my daughter Joy won the Champion Mare honors, so I know exactly how it feels! We just produced eight Regional Champions between us!”

Miniature Horses If Pat Dempsey has developed breeding world-class Arabian horses into an art form, she has also perfected the formula for doing the same thing in miniature. The Beloveds Farm herd of minis are beautifully balanced, tiny replicas of the purebred Arabians. And, just like their larger neighbors, Pat’s miniature horses have numerous World Grand Champion titles among them.

The King of the farm is Beloved’s dynamic herd sire, NFC Egyptian Kings Creation. Visitors to the farm cannot help but be charmed by the little stallion, whose shrill call demands attention as he gallops across his huge field. When asked if he got enough girls this year, at age 28, he always vehemently shakes his head NO! Foaled in 1990, Creation won two American Miniature Horse Association (AMHA) World Grand Champion titles in competition, but it is his prowess as a sire that has become a legend in the miniature horse world. Creation has sired the winners of four World

The Beloveds Minis & Alpaca ...

Grand Championships and two World Reserve Grand Championships along with more than forty World Championships, all of whom are themselves incredible breeders. He has had daughters named World Champion Produce of Dam for the uniformity of their offspring, while Creation himself was the unanimous winner of the largest World Grand Champion Get of Sire class in the history of the AMHA championships in 1999 (99 entries).

Creation replicates himself with each and every foal, stamping his progeny with unmistakable quality. Among his finest sons are VF Olympus, who was named the World Grand Champion Junior Stallion as a yearling and the World Reserve Grand Champion Senior Stallion eight years later, and Beloveds Almighty Creation (Ace), himself a World Champion and multiple-National Champion. Olympus and Ace have fulfilled their destiny by siring numerous World Grand Champions, many of whom are doing their part in perpetuating this vibrant sire line in the top miniature breeding programs around the world.

Suri Alpaca Pat is a longtime breeder of Alpaca that match her horses in terms of quality. In particular, she has collected and bred the Suri strain that is renowned for its particularly silky fleece. It should come as no surprise that her top sire, DDF Double Dutch’s American Spirit, is one of the finest—if not the finest—Suri males on the continent. His fleece incredibly fine and silky with exceptional luster.

There in Lady Lake, Florida, Pat has created a home with a heartbeat for her incredible string of champions. While Beau and the rest of the boys are happy to remain at their home away from home with Ted Carson, the girls are able to enjoy some well-earned rest and recreation, grazing and playing in the immaculate pastures of Beloveds Farm.

As they see Pat driving down the lane, the horses race for the fence, their eagerness and playful attitudes bring a smile to her face. For the time being, all the girls are now Home.

Upon

a first time visit to the 9/11 Memorial Museum in New York City just days before the 17th anniversary of that horrible day, renewed sadness and devastation filled our hearts as we read letters, listened to the recordings, watched archived news reports and listened to actual voices of survivors and the deceased with their final words to loved ones. On multiple occasions, as if we were standing on the streets in the moment, we gasped at what we were witnessing, held each other tight and silently wept.

To this day, the most common quote in reference to the brutal attacks that killed nearly 3000 people is, “we will never forget.” On the surface, it appears as though we, as a nation have not forgotten. The memorial, the anniversary, the movies, books and blogs remind us that it was a terrible day, but the question must be posed, have we, as a nation forgotten perhaps the most important lesson we should have learned after September 11, 2001?

The last section of the museum that we visited was the newest exhibit, “Comeback Season - Sports After 9/11.” The exhibit explores how sports and athletes helped to unite the country, console a grieving nation and give many a reason to go on following the 2001 attacks. Rivals embraced, enemies consoled one another and we, as a nation stood strong in the face of evil and proclaimed that we would not be broken and that we would stand together despite our differences and rivalries. We were not black, white, Mexican, Asian, Democrat or Republican; we were not gay, straight or non-binary; we were Americans, united as we stood hand in hand and wept for one another. The exhibit was a beautiful reminder of how the Arabian community pulls together when a fellow horseman is in pain or in need. We forget our differences and stand together as one, as family.

Have we, as a nation, forgotten what it means to stand together with no thought of color, religion, sexual preference or political stance?

Have we forgotten how to put our misunderstandings of each other’s lifestyles, beliefs and cultures behind the most important human acts, kindness and compassion? Why do we, at this time in our history, find it so hard to respect one another when we’ve been through so much together? We say ‘we will never forget,’ yet every time we express hatred toward one another over things we do not understand, we forget.

As we attend the 2018 United States Nationals, may we find it in ourselves to support each other’s success and stand together as a united community dedicated to our love of the Arabian horse. May we each demonstrate the unifying power of our sport and never forget.

I enjoyed the opportunity to reminisce with Jeff and Jerry Schall of Elk River, MN about Shada’s first 33 years and their enthusiastic optimism for the future of the breed. The support of Jeff’s wife Roxanne Schall and Jerry’s partner Anissa Weber were at the forefront of our conversation as we gained insights into their next chapter.

“My many years of experience as a professional trainer – 33 – has me where I am today. And where is that?” Jeff asks rhetorically.

“I don’t believe you can or should shy away from those years, but embrace them,” he says. “Those many years and experiences have been instrumental in forming me into who and what I have become. So, who and what is that?

“Each and every person in my life has helped formulate my evolution and by extension of that, Shada, Inc. These people are all the fibers from which I, as a horseman, have learned and grown. Just as our breed has evolved, so have the trainers and

owners of these magnificent creatures. I have been blessed with an abundance of success over the years and have developed a

genuine understanding and appreciation for the lifestyle and journey I have been a part of. I am grateful for those around me

– especially my wife, clients, colleagues, family and vital team members Kyle and Jose. They have allowed me to expand and grow into an admirer of the Arabian breed for all of the things it does so well.”

According to Jeff, those of us fortunate enough to be a part of the Arabian horse industry have a special opportunity. “There is nothing easier on the eyes than a beautiful, quality Arabian or Half-Arabian that is excelling in their discipline. It is simply a sight to behold. To be a part of this, whether from afar or within, has truly been a gift.

“As we look to the future, one can’t help but see all the opportunity that exists for our Arabian breed, its breeders and owners.

“Let me continue by circling back to my original premise. Where am I? I am at the same address with the same cell phone

number that I started with all those years ago. I love how this speaks to longevity, consistency, fortitude and perseverance.

“And now the answer to who and what I have become? I am Shada’s CEO – Complete Equine Optimist. I believe in this breed and the people (including myself) who devote their time, energy and lives

to perpetuate a positive future for all!”

Jeff ’s wife and an integral part of the business is Roxanne – a small town girl with an affinity for horses and a dream to one day have one of her

own. Sound familiar? This is indeed how the pursuit of such a dream for

many begin, including Roxanne.

Growing up in Washington state, Roxanne and her family had Arabian horses in their lives and a Half-Arabian/Pinto mare became Roxanne’s

first special companion, her true heart horse. After she and Jeff met, Jeff

shares that he knew the mare and Roxanne came together. “I knew from

the beginning that it would be a package deal. If ever Roxanne was to

consider moving from her home state to Minnesota, Hall of Fame would be a part of the transition.”

Roxanne and “Famous Girl” did in fact move to Minnesota in 2001, with both horse and owner becoming an integral part of the Shada team.

Nearly two decades later, Roxanne’s roles include video creation, website management, bookkeeping, routine health care and the countless other

details that go along with the farm and business management.

Moving forward, Roxanne will also be capitalizing on her passion for advancing Shada client horses as performance prospects. “I absolutely love the process, seeing a horse continue to gain confidence and finding reward in the feeling of a job well done. It’s so satisfying,” she says.

Roxanne wants her horses to feel the same way she feels. “The journey and having an excellent ride are more important, whether simply a lesson or in an actual class at a competition. The color of the ribbon is not my motivation. Do I like to win? Sure, who

doesn’t? For me, it’s merely icing on an already delicious cake!”

Like Jeff, Roxanne is confident in the future of the breed, her journey and the aspect of developing performance prospects.

“I am excited about the projects I am currently responsible for and furthering my judging career. I look forward to what the future has in store.”

Starting in the business just one year after Jeff on the farm that their parents, Dave and Sheila, founded, Jerry shares the same positivity for the future of the breed and industry.

“I think what we have experienced recently in the horse industry reminds me of what happened in 2008 in the housing market. Prices got ahead of values, people purchased homes at inflated values and then everything had to reset itself. We’ve seen a similar pattern in

the horse industry,” he says.

“The good news is that we’re starting to see things turn around. As someone who promotes, trains, sells, buys and markets these horses every single day, I am seeing a difference. Prices are still a little soft, but we have ridden through what I think was the adjustment period. And you can tell everyone that Jerry Schall says it’s a great time to buy a horse!”

Jerry goes on to say he believes the industry has found its footing once again and will start to enjoy a resurgence of popularity on all levels, but especially on the local and regional levels. “One can’t expect to have the national champion stallion, mare or yearling at

every turn. Those are the top one percent of our industry,” he says. “What is still rewarding is to have nice, competitive horses that

we can go out and have fun with on a local, regional and national level.

“We had a time in our industry where people were basically day trading horses, and that wasn’t sustainable,” he adds. “What I’m seeing is that people are going back to what will contribute to making the foundation of the Arabian horse breed strong again.

People are breeding horses for the right reasons – because of their love of the horse.”

“We’ve been doing this a lot of years,” he says about Shada, Inc. “What it’s all about is owning those special horses. When you

have a special horse, a great horse, a quality horse, that’s what gives you a fire in your belly. Now is the perfect opportunity to be a part of this industry.”

The turnout of the horse and exhibitor are important. Keep the outfit tasteful and conservative. Clean lines are very important.

TIM GOGGINS Years as a Judge: 22 How many National shows have you judged? 2018 will be my first U.S. Nationals judging assignment.

If an exhibitor makes a mistake, what is the best advice you can give them to not give up? Keep going! No ride is perfect, no judge omniscient; others are making mistakes too, and it is likely not a “one and done” scenario. There are so many variables, it is entirely possible to recover from a mistake based on its severity, who saw it, and what else is occurring in the class. Fix it and keep going like you own the place.

You often hear people complain when they see someone make a mistake and still get a good ribbon. What would you say to the person sitting in the stands, so they have a better understanding? Good judges view classes from the perspective of looking for positives, not eliminating horses/ riders because of mistakes. A horse that is great in every other way but has a “bobble” for a few steps, is still better overall than a horse who is mediocre throughout but manages a “clean” go.

You see a lot of people ride off the rail; what advice would you give them in using the whole arena? Exhibit your horse in a way that makes him stand out. If everyone is circling center ring, riding with the pack is not “standing out,” it is in fact, the exact opposite. The important thing is to position yourself to get seen; sometimes that is off the rail, sometimes not. I prefer viewing performance horses from a little further back in order to see an overall view, so I often have to look past horses that are being shown too close to me.

To be completely honest, on the topic of outfits, I think the perceived importance being placed on elaborate, bling covered, and ridiculously expensive outfits is totally overstated. I judged the western division at the 2017 Scottsdale show, a spectacularly competitive show, and more than a year later, I can discuss in detail the performances and qualities of many of the horses I placed, but I cannot remember what a single person wore. The outfit craze in the western division of all breeds right now, is a factor of marketing, not judging. So long as an outfit is not noticeably bad in terms of fit or color scheme, I for one, will not even notice. So, my advice would be, spend less money on outfits, and use the savings on livestock, lessons or training.

What advice would give a first-time Nationals exhibitor? “Dance with the one that brought you” meaning, you presumably did well to get here, don’t come to the Nationals and watch everyone else training and

then experiment with big changes a few days before your class because you saw someone else do it. Stick with what you know. Study everyone else, see what you can learn and use, but practice it at home for the next show. Last minute changes without sufficient preparation time often leads to disappointing results.

How many National shows have you judged? This is my first time judging Nationals.

How important is it to have a big entrance into the arena? It creates first impressions, but there is a whole lot of class to judge once that gate closes.

If an exhibitor makes a mistake, what is the best advice you can give them to not give up? Keep on riding/driving/ handling from the time the class starts until it ends… you never know who else made mistakes and you don’t know what each judge saw.

You often hear people complain when they see someone make a mistake and still get a good ribbon.

What would you say to the person sitting in the stands, so they have a better understanding? I think every exhibitor and owner should experience the judges’ seminar at some point and get exposed first hand to how the view is different when you are in the arena. When you are standing in the ring, you can’t see everything that happens to every horse the whole class, versus the stands where you can view most of the arena. It is very possible that the judge simply didn’t see the horse make the mistake, especially if it was a small mistake that was corrected immediately, and the rider kept showing as if nothing ever happened. That is why you may see that three judges had three different placings; it is quite possible they all saw a somewhat different class.

You see a lot of people ride off the rail; what advice would you give them in using the whole arena? You don’t have to ride off the rail to be “seen” by the judges. Focus on knowing your arena position and how to effectively ride your class. Instead of going closer to the inside of the arena because you are near a pack of horses, look around the arena for open areas to navigate to.

Sometimes that means taking a deeper corner to get an open spot or crossing the arena through the center.

In the country discipline, there has been a lot of emphasis put on the walk. Can you share why the walk is so important? For me, a country horse must walk in a way that is soft, quiet, willing and balanced. Country horses need to look like a pleasure to ride. On the loose rein you should see them relax and “take a breath” as they effortlessly demonstrate a flat-footed walk the entire time. As a judge, we can help emphasize the importance of the walk by not “rushing” through the walk gaits in classes. The walk is more than a transitional gait and is judged equally as important as all other gaits.

Apparel can have a wide variety amongst its own discipline. What advice would you give someone getting a new outfit? What do you feel is important and what do you find distracting? My advice … balance. I think it is important to see a well-turned-out horse and rider combination. The attire should fit the rider correctly and the colors should complement the horse. What is distracting? “Overkill” of bling in western and the “borderline conservative, barely adhering to rules on attire” in hunters can be very distracting.

From a judges’ perspective, the best horse will win the class regardless of the outfit, simply because they were the best horse in the class; it’s that simple.

What advice would give a first-time Nationals exhibitor? Have fun and remember that at some point, we were all first-time Nationals exhibitors. Win or lose, I encourage you to enjoy the entire experience of Nationals beyond your classes. Watch classes in a discipline you are not familiar with (help fill our stands and cheer on others), tour the barns and attend the different events throughout the show to meet the wonderful people of the Arabian community.

LORNE ROBERTSON Years as a Judge: 15 How many National shows have you judged? This will be my second Arabian National Championship in the U.S. I judged Youth Nationals in 2016. In addition, I had the privilege of judging the Australian National Championships in 2017.

How important is it to have a big entrance into the arena? I don’t think a big entrance is as important as a correct entrance. Be in rhythm, be balanced and most importantly, enjoy the experience. After all, you are riding into the ring to compete for a National Championship … enjoy the ride!

If an exhibitor makes a mistake, what is the best advice you can give them to not give up? Carry on, a class is not a fault and out. I’ve won many classes whilst making a mistake. You never know what the judge has seen, or not seen, and at Nationals there are three or more judges at one time. Additionally, your mistake is being judged against everyone else’s mistakes. Remember, no one is perfect.

You often hear people complain when they see someone make a mistake and still get a good ribbon.

What would you say to the person sitting in the stands, so they have a better understanding? Please see above. Also, I like to judge from the positive. I want to reward excellence

and you must balance those excellent moments against what I trust will be only a couple of mistakes. It’s about balance, it’s about reward!

You see a lot of people ride off the rail; what advice would you give them in using the whole arena?

Be seen, yes, but be safe. Show your horse and you to the best of your advantage. I believe in being “slightly” off the rail, which gives you mobility and space to maneuver if you need it, but too close to the center and you are not letting the judge see you to the fullest. Don’t crowd … allow the judges room to see you and see you in reference to the other competitors. This is the opportunity for you to shine.

Apparel can have a wide variety among its own discipline. What advice would you give someone getting a new outfit? What do you feel is important and what do you find distracting? Too much bling! Especially in Equitation, which includes horsemanship.

Traditional, clean, well maintained, appropriate. Don’t let your outfit draw attention to your worst attributes, we all have them.

What advice would give a first-time Nationals exhibitor? Enjoy the ride.

MARGO SMITH SHALLCROSS Years as a Judge: 27 How many National shows have you judged? This will be my 10th National Arabian show; one was in Australia and one was in Venezuela. I have judged seven World Shows for Pintos; Morgan Nationals once as a guest judge; American Miniature Horse Association Nationals seven times; American Miniature Horse Registry Nationals three times; and Congress one time.

How important is it to have a big entrance into the arena? A big entrance into the arena is not what I am looking for in these classes. A confident and correct ride is what you will need in Trail and Western Horsemanship. Showmanship will be someone that can execute the pattern with skill and precision.

If an exhibitor makes a mistake, what is the best advice you can give them to not give up? If you get hung up worrying about a mistake, it will play into the rest of your performance.

Think only of what is in front of you and not what is behind.

You often hear people complain when they see someone make a mistake and still get a good ribbon.

What would you say to the person sitting in the stands, so they have a better understanding? Trail classes are based on scoring systems that reflects the ride and are posted for all to view. It is the overall ride and not

minor errors that add up to who is tops in a class. Judging is done from the positive and not the negative.

You see a lot of people ride off the rail; what advice would you give them in using the whole arena? The only class I will be judging where riding off the rail is a factor is Western Horsemanship (rail work). As a judge, I certainly get a better overall view of the rider when they are not riding on top of me. I want to see them use the rail, and certainly have no problem with a rider coming off the rail for a better position but want to see them return to the rail when possible.

Apparel can have a wide variety amongst its own discipline. What advice would you give someone getting a new outfit? What do you feel is important and what do you find distracting? When getting a new outfit, make sure the colors work with you and the horse. I’m not a fan of the rhinestones down the chaps, but when an outfit is tasteful and fits properly, it can certainly add to the overall presentation.

What advice would give a firsttime Nationals exhibitor? Enjoy the moment and have fun, as you have worked hard to get to this level. n

Dr. Nancy O’Reilly, owner of Amazing Horse Woman, LLC, has been involved with Arabian horses now for about five years and became hooked like most others to this beautiful breed. She currently owns horses at her old home in Missouri and her new home in California.

In 2017, O’Reilly purchased CSP Gossip Girl (Vegaz x LA Pistola), also known as GG, at ChriShan Park in Missouri. Bred by Alicia and Eileen Scott, O’Reilly describes her favorite qualities about this beautiful 9-year-old Arabian English pleasure mare and new addition to her program, “Gossip Girl is like a wind-up toy; she’s a beautiful Vegaz daughter with his long neck and elegance; and boy, can she move! You bet she does. She is a sweet, petite, little beauty that literally moves with harmony and ease. She’s fun to watch.”

Acquired for her growing breeding program, CSP Gossip Girl joins O’Reilly’s two stallions: Aff liction (Mamage x PSI Love U) with Jim Lowe at Lowe Show Horse Centre, and Life Inthe Fazt Lane (Vegaz x River Dance NA) with Chris Wilson at ChriShan Park.

CSP Gossip Girl’s bloodline makes her essential, bringing in Vegaz and Matoi.

Wilson trained both Vegaz and Matoi, winning national championships on these famous sires. “She may be the most like Matoi out of his babies I have ridden; she has the same squat in her hind end as he did, as well as the same go forward hard round motion in the front end. I can feel both Vegaz and Matoi when I ride her, and that is what makes her so special as a mare. She carries the traits of these great sires and that is why we want to breed her forward.”

When it comes to O’Reilly’s plans with CSP Gossip Girl, she says, “Aff liction and CSP Gossip Girl will make a perfect match. Mamage and Vegaz together—wow! Can there be a better duo?”

Copple Show Horses

ocated in Nisqually Valley, Washington, about forty-five minutes from the Seattle Airport, a person will find the Arabian horse training farm gem, Copple Show Horses, owned by Ron and Yvonne Copple.

Ron has been training and showing Arabians and Half-Arabians for over 20 years. He has won numerous championships at regional and national shows in both western and hunter pleasure. He started riding horses when he was a child, which launched a passion for training horses.

Furthermore, Yvonne, a Canadian native, is an accomplished trainer in a variety of disciplines. Yvonne has multiple national, regional and Scottsdale championships in hunter pleasure, country pleasure, and show hack. Her expansive knowledge comes from learning from the industry’s finest.

Yvonne has also been involved with Arabian horses since she was young, due to her mother. When Yvonne was five, she received a Half-Arabian and was hooked. At the age of 17, she started to give lessons to kids in showmanship and equitation, and her business took off.

Her training facility was just outside of White Rock, British Columbia; a very successful business for 18 years, training, showing, and buying and selling horses for clients and their kids until she moved to the United States about six years ago to be with Ron. They compete at several different regionals in the northwest with their clients, and together, will celebrate Copple Show Horses’ seven years this coming December.

Responsible for the care of anywhere between 27and 35 horses in training throughout the year, they compete in a variety of disciplines. Ron works mainly the western horses and some of the hunters, while Yvonne trains hunter, country and show hack.

Their horses’ care comes first, along with building future stars in their western and hunter futurity and junior horse programs. Yvonne shares she would like to see more amateurs come in and buy younger horses where the owner and horse can grow together and be competitive at nationals. The ability to match the horse to the amateur is a goal for all trainers, and the Copples’ have proven their ability to match horses to their best and most suitable rider.

Yvonne and Ron’s versatility as trainers is what makes them so special.

One of their clients, Lori Osberg, spoke about how their skills have helped Osberg’s daughter be able to compete. “Ron and Yvonne are hard-working, dedicated trainers. They complement each other in their training methods and bring their own knowledge to their program. They have really helped my daughter, Jenna, improve her riding skills after she was in a bad car accident almost 10 years ago.”

The Copples’ dedication and love for training horses and their clients comes through in their accomplishments. They recently came home from the Canadian Nationals with several wins, and both have taken many amateurs to regional and national wins in different divisions. The majority of Yvonne’s favorite moments in the show arena are watching her amateurs win at any level, to see their dreams come true.

After talking to Ariel Stevens, it was clear how much she loved being part of the barn. “I am proud to be a part of the Copple Show Team. The atmosphere of the barn is relaxed, and everyone is extremely supportive of one another.

Ron and Yvonne are both talented trainers who always do what is best for the horse first. I greatly respect their knowledge and have complete trust in them to care and provide the best, tailored training plan for my horse. Their hard work and dedication to their program is shown through successful show results, but most importantly, through their happy horses and clients. The Copple barn is my second family.”

Kim Peterson is the head groom at Copple Show Horses. Her background is with cow horses and race horses, so Arabians are a new experience for her. However, she explained how Ron and Yvonne take the time to teach her. Peterson could not be more thankful to have bosses who are caring and couldn’t imagine wanting to go anywhere else.

Carol Tedrick has known Ron for almost 20 years and has watched him grow into the person and horseman he is today. Always game to help in any way, Ron helped Carol with a horse she struggled with. “They both are delightful and so hard working,” says Carol. “Ron knows how to train, adjusting the horse to the rider to a certain extent, making it the best experience for their clients.”

Through dedication comes trust with the trainer, and that is what makes Yvonne and Ron so important to Marilyn Hodgson. Mrs. Hodgson lost her husband, Jim, who chose the sire of Marilyn’s most important horse, Big Jim. When needing a trainer, she did not second guess where to send him.

Marilyn said, “Big Jim had to be placed with Ron and Ynonne. He is the most important horse of my life and they are who I felt most comfortable with sending him to. The reason in one word … integrity. Obviously, they are also fantastic trainers, as their record demonstrates.”

It won’t be necessary to look for this power team at U.S. Nationals, they will be front and center.

Chris Hanson, a caravan friend, as well as client, could not talk enough about his trainers. “Ron is a horseman first and a trainer second. I studied at the shows what I liked and what I didn’t like, and Ron kept coming up. The only horse I have with outside trainers is with Ron. I travel with him and his horses come first; we stop overnight, and we don’t drive too many hours. I couldn’t be more satisfied of my decision with Ron as my trainer. He is kind and I’ve never heard him talk bad about another trainer. There is nothing negative about Yvonne or Ron; I am very pleased with my decision.”

Other long-time friends and recent clients, Mel and Toni Lick, explained the dedication and passion they see the Copples having for the horses. “My husband and I have known Ron and Yvonne for many years, but we had never done business with them until last fall,” says Toni. “Our mare had injured herself and we were in the process of rehabilitating her and found ourselves needing assistance. The Copples live nearby and we called upon them to help.

Not only did they do a great job conditioning our mare, but they took her to a new level of performance. At the young age of 69, I was reserve champion in country pleasure in our region. We owe both Yvonne and Ron a debt of gratitude for their patience and hard work.”

The barn atmosphere is one-in-a-million full of love for one another as well as the Arabian breed. One of their clients, Barbara Cornelius, described her favorite part about being part of the farm. “My favorite thing is the lack of drama among clients. Everyone is so supportive with a strong sense of teamwork. Ron and Yvonne work well together to provide a good experience for their clients.”

Priceless Memories

The name Kevin Price has been known throughout the industry for quite some time. He is known for his training ability, but also for his sense of humor and being an overall blast to be around. He has worked with some of the most wellknown training facilities over the years, such as, Cedar Ridge Arabians and Empress Arabians. However, Kevin and his wife, Gretchen, made the decision to open their own farm, Price Performance Horses.

A full-service training operation located in New Berlin, Wisconsin, they specialize in training and showing both purebred and Half-Arabian horses in a variety of different disciplines, including English Pleasure, Park, Driving, Western, Hunt, Show Hack and Native Costume.

Kevin initially worked with Chad Judy at Empress Arabians when he entered the industry, and to this day, the two are still good friends, proving they worked well together with their success in the show ring. Chad explains, “I’m lucky to call Kevin a friend. We worked together for a few years and I learned a lot from him.

He’s one of the hardest working horse trainers out there. Everyone loves Kevin; he’s smart and extremely talented. You can tell Kevin is very committed to the Arabian and is doing the best he can for his clients.”

Speaking of Gretchen, Judy effuses, “She is one of the hardest workers and teammates I have ever known.

She is incredibly dedicated to her horses and animals in general. She has such a big heart and she and Kevin work really well together.”

Sharing some of his memories with Kevin and Gretchen, Judy’s favorites were their trips to shows together. Best road trip person? Gretchen—who is known throughout the industry as a huge foodie—as many dinners consisted of brownie sundaes.

If there was anyone, Judy says he could call in this industry to hang out with and have a good time, it was Gretchen and Kevin, “because there are no couples as fun as the two of them.”

After their time with Empress Arabians, Kevin and Gretchen moved to Cedar Ridge Arabians, where Kevin worked for a stretch with great success before opening their own barn. Says Lara Ames, “There is no couple that is harder working than Kevin and Gretchen. We have many great memories with both. Our proudest may have been when Kevin drove Toi Jabaska to a National Championship. It was an amazing class and Kevin presented her beautifully.”

Dream On An On

It is clear Kevin’s personality and sense of humor is second to none. One of his good friends, Rob Bick, claims Price as being one of the most hard-working horsemen he knows. Bick’s admiration for Price stems from the effort Kevin puts into his horses to make each one of them the best they can be. Outside of the business, Bick recalls his experience learning how to scuba dive with Price, where Bick said Price almost killed him in the learning process, but it was still a great time.

Another good friend of Kevin’s is Jody Strand. The first time Jody and Kevin hung out, they did not know one another; both were going on vacation with a group of people. Remembering his first impression of Kevin, Jody shares, “Having only seen him around at nationals, he looked so serious, I didn’t know what to expect. We all went to dinner that night and we ended up sitting next to one another. We got to talking and I realized how he was pretty funny and pretty cool. We just hit it off. I told him how cool I thought he was, because he seemed unapproachable before, and that’s how we became friends.”

Jody agrees with Bick’s assessment that Kevin is one of the hardest working men he knows. He is one of a few people who can compete in all the different disciplines. “He just works his tail off. You can see him warming up all these different types of horses—costume, driving, hunter, show hack—he’s just everywhere, and he does a good job with all of them.”

Another aspect of what makes the Prices so special to the industry?

Jody says, “What I notice about Kevin at a show is how big his clientele is, and how he tries so hard on every single horse. He has the two things that this industry and every industry need to be successful: he is a lot of fun with a great personality and he turns out a great product.”

The clientele and how Kevin turns out a product has a lot to do with the work behind the scenes, which is where Gretchen comes in. She makes sure the barn is running at its full potential and is known as the literal backbone of the operation. Grooming, clipping, tacking, hauling, the organizer and the go-to when something needed to be handled, it’s been said, there was nothing Gretchen could not do.

Also good friends with Kevin is Josh Quintus, despite Kevin asking Josh to head a horse for him in a driving class years ago, where Josh claims Kevin tried to kill him. During the victory lap the cart broke and Kevin had to long line the horse out. What Josh took away from that class was Kevin is not very good on his feet, even though he played high school football. Josh says, “Kevin is one of the really good guys in the Arabian horse business. He focuses on what is good for the long run of the industry. He does the time and community work, and he focuses on how to make Multi-National Champion & Reserve Champion Tomage

it last and be successful.”

The only improvement Josh could give Kevin, “He could work on his handeye coordination!”

It is clear people want to be around Kevin, because he is fun and easy to be around, as well as knowing you’re going to get a hard-working trainer who will do the best he can for you. “He just has the tools to be successful and he’s a good guy to be around,” Jody says.

Jim Lowe is a trainer known for his wild sense of humor and his unreadable Facebook posts. However, Jim claims Kevin will give him a run for his money when it comes down to a good laugh, especially at Canadian Nationals.

Canada would not be the same without the “prank war” between both; one of Lowe’s favorite escapades. Besides being a great prankster, Lowe sees Kevin for the great horseman that he is. “He has a very strong passion for training Arabian horses and being the best he can be. He just exudes passion in all aspects of his training, and it is evident in the show ring.”

Not to be outdone, one of the first horse shows Brian Murch remembers being at with Kevin was back in 2001 in Syracuse, New York, where their own prank war started. One night, Kevin went and turned all of Brian’s decorations and equipment upside down. Brian’s payback was to hide all of Kevin’s tack in the trailer. This friendly battle has lasted over a decade, with moments of great respect in-between. Echoing those above, “Kevin is a sound and solid horseman, doing what is best for the horse, says Murch. “He is an extremely hard worker and just a good person. He is also a good trainer; someone who we as a breed should be proud to have in the industry.”

Beyond prank wars, Kevin has won countless championships from the regional to national level. And his hard work shows through the happiness of his clients and his dedication to the breed.

Kevin’s secret weapon? Gretchen, Murch believes. “She is such a big part of the whole equation,” Murch explains, “between business and making sure everything runs smoothly. She jumps in and helps and does everything she needs to do. For years, she has been at his side doing what needs to be done.”

It certainly has made semen available that previously would have been impossible to obtain. It has made potential breedings possible, even for international horses. All of my breedings are done with shipped semen.

I see both sides of this question but personally, I don’t think it should be allowed.

Penalty for late registrations?

I think the fee structures are appropriate and encouraging to register early. I don’t think breeders should be penalized beyond that.

Biggest Pet Peeve Do I only get one? :) While it now happens rarely, and especially with DNA testing, I’m very disappointed when I hear of a lack of integrity with false breeding and registration reports in any breed. I may be old fashioned, but I still think that no matter how beautiful an individual is, that it still have athletic talent.

It seems sometimes we become focused on one aspect at the expense of the whole horse.

Breeder Recognition While national titles are such a clear recognition of the incredible effort it takes to get a horse to that place, I think the best recognition is in achieving the respect of one’s fellow horsemen.

NIPOMO, CA FARM AFFILIATION: SHADA, INC./ VARIAN ARABIANS Discipline Focus After many years with Ventura Farms, my imperative has become breeding classes which absolutely must set the stage for beautiful athletes. My horses have excelled in Hunter Pleasure as well as Halter classes. They’re perfectly cadenced, moving with harmony and powerful precision. Trainability and temperament are critical to success. Our 4-year-old Halter Champion stallion, Skyefall, is proving to be a strong sire. His colts (yes, all colts, so far) are exceptional in both Arabian type and requisite athleticism.

He shows promise as a dramatically beautiful, soft-moving Western Pleasure horse.

However, I breed to my own vision of an outstanding purebred Arabian, hopefully an approach that will prevent the fragmentation so prevalent in our breed today. Versatility continues to be a large part of the Arabian’s appeal in the mainstream.

U.S. NATIONALS PROFILES # Mares Bred a Year I’m highly selective, breeding only two mares of my own per year and a limited number of outside mares. # Years Breeding Arabians That’s a loaded question. I’ve meticulously studied pedigrees since I was a child and purchased my first Arabian horse in 1979.

He was “halter pretty”, but such an incredible athlete, that he succeeded at open hunter shows in the 80s. A total joy to ride, he completely sold me on the Arabian horse. My breeding goals further became defined by our 3-time Reserve National Champion Hunter Pleasure/English Side Saddle mare, Alada Psynergy VF+++/. She also succeeded as a Champion Halter Mare winning competitive Regionals while prevailing over the best mares in the country, including the finest Polish and Brazilian mares at that time.

Proudest Breeding Moment I would have to say, each time I see a horse of my breeding beautifully presented, but this year is especially exciting with a horse I bred competing in the U.S. National Hunter Pleasure Futurity.

Shipped Semen?

While shipped semen provides convenience and the possibility of new horizons, ironically it has saturated the gene pool with the evolution of fewer bloodlines. It’s a bit of a paradox. One could argue that it allows for more potential, but that in itself is not necessarily good for our breed considering the negative possibilities, as well as the positive.

Embryo Transfer … Helped or Hindered?

I do think embryo transfers should be limited in number per year for the very reason I’ve noted with transported semen. Should an exceptional mare be unable to carry a pregnancy, that would be a determining factor, but using embryo transfers to “churn out” one foal after another seems an abuse of the process.

Changing a horse’s name; yes or no?

No. A breeder’s designation should follow that horse with the only exception of a mistake having been made. I’ve seen names changed due to confusion on gender or due to misspelling which changes the meaning.

That shouldn’t have to follow a horse the rest of its life, but that’s an easy fix. Re-assignment # Mares Bred a Year It varies year to year, but ordinarily, anywhere from 3 to 7 mares. # Years Breeding Arabians We bred our first Arabian about 20 years ago but did not breed for a number of years afterward because we were so busy showing our mares. The past five or six years we are back to breeding, now that those mares’ show careers are over.

Shipped Semen?

I believe it allows mare owners to select sires by something other than geography. Not every Ar abian Horse Times | 215 | Volume 49, No. 5A

of farm/breeder’s initials by a new owner definitely should not be allowed. It rather defeats the breeder’s purpose. A giant of the industry once told me, “Be careful what you name ‘em!”

Penalty for late registrations?

“Penalized” is a strong word. Where this becomes a sticky issue is the quality of the foal and the option not to register, then someone downstream acquires that horse and wants to register it. A horse should be eligible for registration throughout its life, but a strong “late fee” might be applicable. Mistakes can be made. Foals should be registered as soon as reasonably possible for the most economical, expedient and accurate resolution.

Biggest Pet Peeve That’s an area into which I could tread further, but I think my previous answers cover it.

Breeder Recognition Championships won by his or her horse is the “cream” to any breeder. Most importantly, a new owner’s love of my horses brings the most satisfaction. Given that, their successes become self-evident. mare owner can afford to ship a mare across the country and pay for mare care, so the days of breeding to the stallion right down the road because he is all you can afford are pretty much over, and that’s a good thing.

Embryo Transfer … Helped or Hindered?

I think it’s a two-edged sword. ET definitely is beneficial for mares that have reproductive issues. On the other hand, there are some breeders who flood the market with multiple babies every year just because they can. I doubt that is good for a mare’s reproductive system over the course of time.

Changing a horse’s name; yes or no?

I believe there are occasions when a horse’s name deserves to be changed, such as when it is a rescue, or the name is silly or ill-fitting. I recognize that breeders like to see their initials before or after their foals’ names, but any breeder or owner who mistreats a horse does not deserve to have his/her initials on it.

No. I think a lot of us have busy lives and sometimes life and paperwork obligations get away from us. Happens to me all the time!

Biggest Pet Peeve Stallion managers whose primary income is derived from training and showing, so they are not organized when it comes to breeding/ shipping management, or they don’t have enough experienced staff to handle it for them.

Breeder Recognition The very best recognition is when one of your foals (or your stallion’s offspring) win big!

Owner Discipline Focus Our horses compete in most of the main ring disciplines, depending upon which horses are being shown at any given time. Between my daughter, Morgan, and I, we have shown in just about everything. This year Morgan will be showing in Country Pleasure, English Pleasure, Park, Native Costume and Halter.

In the past she has also competed in Driving, Show Hack, Hunter Under Saddle and Western, so she is very much the all-around rider. I now compete in western pleasure and spend the balance of my time being Morgan’s assistant and wardrobe consultant (lol)! # Horses Competing This year I am showing my H/A gelding, MK Goldrush, in several western pleasure classes. Morgan will have a full plate with Goldd Standard (CEP and saddle/pleasure halter), Get Rhythmn BF (park, English pleasure and native costume) and our amazing young stallion, Anduril of Rohan, in amateur halter. Goldd Standard (“Digger”) will also be presented in the open halter by Joe Alberti.

Most Gratifying 2018 Show Ring Moment It has to be Morgan’s presentation of Digger at Region 15. She and he were both entirely new to the halter division, so watching her (she is tiny) run with him (he is huge and

makes an amazing entrance) and stand him up was one of those moments every parent will forever remember.

Favorite Horse Show I would say it’s a toss-up between Region 12 and Region 15. Region 12 is our home region, so it’s an opportunity to visit with friends and see some of the best horses in the country compete. Region 15 is just such a beautiful setting, and we love getting some cool mountain air in the middle of our hot Florida summers. Of course, we love U.S. Nationals too!

Power To Change That would be a good question for our trainers. We are fortunate to have Dwane Hankins and Joe Alberti for guidance and running interference with show management.

They do a great job of it!

Best Advice Given It costs the same to train and show an amazing horse as it does a not-so-great one and life is too short not to ride something exceptional!

Final 2018 Show Wish Well, obviously, our horses taking home roses!

We have been so fortunate in the past with numerous top tens, but national wins would certainly be the cherry on top!

Amateur # Times A U.S. Competitor This will be the fifth U. S. Nationals for me. I am fortunate to have had so many great horses over the years who qualified!

Stand Alone Moment There have been so many great moments and superlative horses, not only ours but those of barn mates and friends, after a while they all blend together! I suppose the one moment that stands out was the year I donated a horse trailer for the AHYA raffle and was invited to address the audience one evening. It was an opportunity to tell everyone how much the Arabian horse community means to me and hearing the applause afterward was something I will never forget!

Show Schedule Suggestion I don’t know that there is anything in particular that I would change. We bring different horses every year, it seems, so any scheduling issues are discussed and resolved with our trainers, who are very adept at working with AHA to eliminate class conflicts.

Create Performance Grand Championships?

No. Our horses have enough on their plate as it is! Plus, I think the deck would often be stacked in favor of the older, seasoned horses. Every once in a while, there is a junior horse superstar that might be able to take top honors, but overall, I do not perceive a need for grand championships.

Horse Show Loves Everything! Especially at the bigger regionals and U.S. Nationals. I love seeing old friends from across the country and making new ones, watching classes, cheering for our favorites and friends, and of course, the obligatory pilgrimages to spots like PF Chang’s and Kilkenny’s Tavern on nights when we can sneak away!

Arabian Horse Benefits Obviously, there is a great deal of satisfaction and pride in owning great horses, but for me what makes it all worthwhile is the love and trust the horses have for us and our trainers.

The relationships that have been formed among us give me daily joy!

Hobbies / Passions I love my farm! There is nothing more satisfying than watching the calves and young horses frolic in the pastures and watching the sunset from up on my deck. The land below it falls away, so it feels like you’re five stories up. I still pinch myself in disbelief sometimes when I look around at the beauty of it all.

U.S. NATIONALS PROFILES Embryo Transfer … Helped or Hindered?

I feel E.T has certainly helped the breed by allowing mares who would not be able to carry a foal, to still serve such an amazing purpose by producing an egg that could be carried by a recipient mare. Again, going back to bloodline preservation, processes such as embryo transfers and shipped semen, I feel, is part of what has kept this breed alive.

Proudest Breeding Moment Seeing my horses go to loving homes and succeed in their new-found purposes! One I remember specifically is a HF Mister Chips baby we bred and is absolutely loving life as a little girl’s life-long pal and trail ride buddy!

Shipped Semen?

Shipped semen has allowed the potential for this industry to grow exponentially! By being able ship, we can preserve bloodlines that are starting to fall off from today’s domestic bloodlines. Imagine if still today the only way to breed was by live cover? We would simply be breeding the same horses over and over without adding or improving the breed.

Changing a horse’s name; yes or no?

I believe it should be allowed. I believe a horse’s registered name says a lot about them and their personality! Just like people, a name should be fitting to the being.

Penalty for late registrations?

I don’t believe penalizing a breeder for not immediately registering their foal would incline them to register—knowing they’re being penalized. However, I do feel that it is utterly important to do so. Registering and tracking our breed is crucial to making sure the breed is thriving, along with keeping proper record of breeder, owner, horse’s breeding, and sex, is also highly important.

Biggest Pet Peeve That simply because a horse isn’t a performance or main ring horse, that it is less desired. I think people forget that there is so much more to Arabians than just pleasure showing! Each horse has potential and can have a job/serve a purpose; some may be working types, jumpers, trail horses, companions, therapeutic horses, and even race horses!

Breeder Recognition Seeing a horse they bred go on and fulfill someone’s dream! I’ll never forget when I won my National Championship with my beloved EQ Escalade. One of the first things I did when I got home was find his breeder, EQ Training Center, and write them a thank you note. Knowing that someone took the time to choose a stallion and mare, with the hopes that their foal would one day become a champion, and he did two times over, made me feel so appreciative to have had a horse like him!

Owner Discipline Focus Oh boy! Well, as a whole I’ve tried just a little bit of everything but this year my boys will collectively be showing in H/A Country Select Rider, Saddle Type Geldings ATH and Open with Joe Alberti; H/A Mounted Native Costume ATR and Open, English Pleasure AAOTR 19-39, Park ATR, Western Side Saddle ATR, and last but certainly not least, Arabian Stallions AAOTH! # Horses Competing We are bringing 4 amazing geldings this year!

Most Gratifying 2018 Show Ring Moment I have handfuls of extremely gratifying moments in the ring this year, but to name a few: Reggie winning the Region 12 H/A Park ATR and our English class at Region 15; Andy and I going Champion in the Stallions at our first Regional’s together; and Digger winning ALL of his Saddle Type Geldings classes!

Favorite Horse Show My favorite horse show is probably Region 12, my home Region! Every year, the competition is always amazing, they have wonderful chili cookoffs, raffles and auctions! It really is a week spent with two amazing barns and trainers, wonderful friends and the best horses!

I truly miss the concept of a “universal” horse, a perfect companion and show horse capable of competing in multiple disciplines. With the high level of specialty divisions, horses successful in the show ring these days must possess certain features, but we now over focus to produce horses for a particular discipline, while compromising structure and beauty, also allowing conformation faults.

Arabian Horse Benefits Owning and competing has brought so much love and knowledge into my life! Great comradery, a respect for those who work My most successful horse, Khohinoor MW, was conceived as a western horse in mind, however, there were no guarantees it would be his destiny, as his equally beautiful full brother enjoys being a hunter. Showing my babies in halter as yearlings, 2- or 3-year-olds, then moving on to a performance career is preferable. If halter training is done correctly, they can handle halter and performance showing for years, or even do both at the same competitions. My focus is to produce amateur friendly horses, enjoyed by families, but also competitive enough to win at major shows for their owners. # Mares Bred a Year I truly consider myself a ‘microscopic’ breeder, as I’ve produced only 11 foals in the past 20 years. With limited resources, every breeding decision is thoroughly considered and analyzed, as I take responsibility of all animals I produce and, of course, some of them would need to find new homes. The goal is to breed the best mare I can get and choose stallion to complement her. Balancing personal preferences and popular trends is a hard choice, not to mention market shifts, genetic limitations and accessibility to ‘ideal’ bloodlines. # Years Breeding Arabians Well, in practice, twenty years, however, I spent many years dreaming about creating imaginary horses. Growing up in Poland, I was fascinated by beautiful Arabians from National Stud Farms, Janow Podlaski, Michalow and Kurozweki, then later, Bialka. It gave me an amazing opportunity to study pedigrees, learn about bloodlines, interact with many famous horses fundamental in Polish breeding and learn directly from stud directors A. tirelessly to make sure me and my horses are always on our game, and a grand appreciation of the bond between horse and rider. I’ve been blessed to have many great horses cross my path and each one has really taught me something specific that I can apply not only to riding but to life in general!

Hobbies / Passions I enjoy fishing/boating, getting crafty every once in a while, and baking! horses. It also helped me appreciate their athletic abilities. Prior to owning horses, I knew which bloodlines I would like to include in my breeding program. When opportunity came, I acquired my first broodmare from Dunromin Arabians, a descendant of the famous E-line from Michalow. Later on, a second special mare arrived from Janow Podlaski, carrying the P-line and F-line. This year, we welcomed two promising foals, a filly and colt, which will continue the legacy of their grandmother.

Proudest Breeding Moment Watching Khohinoor MW showing at the Canadian Nationals this year was absolutely fantastic! He was moving beautifully and just looked gorgeous, shown by Brett Becker in the Western Pleasure Junior horse class. He won unanimously. From the moment he was born, I knew he was special. As time went by, he grew and developed into a beautiful colt. Choosing his parents, I dreamt about a ‘perfect’ black horse, with the painful awareness that those dreams rarely come true. Well, taking a chance paid off; I can say that he is definitely the dream horse ... against all odds.

Shipped Semen?

It gave accessibility to the breed and I have foals by stallions otherwise not available due to distance and remote locations. Breeders could expand their ideas and choose stallions from different countries. Unfortunately, it also limited local breedings, as a stallion’s presence/live cover was no longer needed to have a foal. In addition, however, everybody started to prefer and now breeds to popular and famous stallions.

We’ve lost genetic variety, witnessed multiple horses by the same sires in show rings, and an overall decrease in genetic diversity.

U.S. NATIONALS PROFILES Embryo Transfer … Helped or Hindered?

I would say, it did both. It helped obtain foals from aged mares and ones not able to carry foals themselves. Mares were also able to continue performance or show careers, while their babies grew. Breeders could buy embryos for lower prices compared to acquiring a mare or get a chance for an offspring from a mare not ever available for sale.

Changing a horse’s name; yes or no?

I would give breeders the full right to name their horse. It is our ‘product’ and choosing a name is particularly important to me.

Many given names have a special meaning or message; it could represent a particular tradition. Personally, I would not allow name changes, except if the name is inappropriate or offensive in some way.

Again, we witnessed multiple babies from the same mares competing at shows, limiting chances for other horses to be recognized.

It created trends and almost expectations to reward particular horses, just because of their ‘famous’ mothers.

Penalty for late registrations?

Penalizing breeders would not improve registration numbers. The goal is to have all foals registered, so giving penalties would cause the opposite effect, rather than motivate people. I would say do not overcharge for late registrations, as this is a definite deterrent in encouraging people to register foals.

I would suggest simplifying the process and reduce fees, and let’s see what happens.

Biggest Pet Peeve Excessive breeding without taking responsibility for animals.

Breeder Recognition Winning shows and titles provide public and social recognition. Seeing a lovely foal, watching it grow and enjoying daily interactions with your horse provides personal satisfaction and self-recognition of your breeding ideas. Then seeing a new owner of your horse, who is a happy customer, presents amazing recognition and validation of your breeding efforts. All levels are desirable, and we strive to enjoy them all.

Stand Alone Moment When we were lined up in a class waiting for the #’s to be verified, I asked the lady next to me who was very happy and petting her horse, if she had a good ride. She said it was ok but looked at me with tears in her eyes and said it was the first time in four years that she made it to the semi-finals. Power To Change This is a tricky question, answering it is nearly impossible. I would work on condensing the show, offering less classes and reducing the number of show days. Everyone, from show officials, horses, owners, trainers, grooms to exhibitors and spectators, are all overworked.

U.S. Nationals is a triathlon, making it difficult to have fun. The U.S. Nationals should be reserved for the best of the best.

This is not a dance competition, and everyone does not need to go home with a ribbon.

It is sad to me that being top ten is not considered winning!

I was standing next to my daughter, and we just looked at each other and started crying and hugging. That moment is a memory for a lifetime.

Favorite Horse Show I love Canadian Nationals. The community is so welcoming, and it’s fun to watch the youth and the adults perform at the same national show.

Best Advice Given We have been very fortunate to have had

many great people in our corner over the years providing advice and encouragement. The best advice came from Kathy Monico when she told us that showing horses is only about “joy and happiness.” It’s true. There are many decisions, risks, and potential disappointments involved in this business, but for owners and amateurs, it’s about loving your horses, making life-long friendships, and enjoying the thrill of the show ring. Joy and happiness.

My poor horse had never had a rowel spur on in the show ring, so of course, he bucked a bit, and I left the class in tears (I totally deserved the GATE!). I have definitely learned to check my equipment better, smile a little more and pass along a hug to someone else, even if it’s one of our sweet show kids; it seems to relieve the nerves.

Horse Show Loves I love seeing and connecting with people who have become such an important social, and supportive network for me in just a few short years. little girl that took the neighbor’s poor pony for some pretty wild rides when I was nine, and fearless!). I competed and played around with team penning, a little cutting with my Quarter Horses, and my husband traveled all over the country team roping. However, after I rode my first Arabian, that was it, I was HOME. I’ve found my peace, a great joy, as well as independence. Not to mention, my husband has impressed me with his ability to handle the house and family on his own beautifully when I am showing!

Hobbies / Passions I have a million hobbies and interests! I am a beach lady … luckily, we are 5 minutes to Lake Michigan! I am a total football fanatic, a daily reader of EVERYTHING, a podcast learner of world events, a history fan, and an extreme music lover of every kind of music you can imagine! I listen to everything from beautiful symphony music to Eminem, it depends on the day, or even the hour sometimes!

I’d have to say the passion that I have above all, is for our many children, and now grandchildren also, to know that they are so loved and valued for who they are, and to help them find THEIR passions, whatever they may be.

Stand Alone Moment Winning my first Top Ten at U.S. Nationals.

I have won top tens at Youth Nationals in the past but earning a top ten in my first year as an amateur and at U.S. Nationals was pretty memorable!

Stand Alone Moment I will always remember winning rose blankets with Mytoi Bask W+//, but some moments that really stand out in my mind come from how much we just enjoyed being at the show together. I would sit outside his stall during law school with my laptop and Mytoi would reach over his stall guard to play with my keyboard or my hair. It’s those little moments that really stand out.

Stand Alone Moment My favorite recent U.S. Nationals moment happened in 2016. This was very exciting because our horse CPH Lonestarr and Abe Cotton won National Champion in the first AWPA $50,000 H/A Futurity class. To top it off, a few classes later, one of the hardest working people I know went National Champion (Regina Kruger & WGA Kid Rose), and I was Reserve Champion (on Next Top Model LOA) in the ABS Jackpot Western Pleasure class. To say the least, it is a memory that will last a lifetime!

Show Schedule Suggestion I would recommend moving the Jackpot, Futurity, and Maturity classes to the evening sessions. I think these classes could draw in a larger audience at night.

Show Schedule Suggestion It seems that someone in scheduling forgets that show hack and side saddle horses are often the same ones. The schedule rarely accommodates a break for those horses.

Show Schedule Suggestion I would like to see Leveling classes. My daughter competes at Youth Nationals and I really enjoy watching the different levels complete. I think it’s a better way to do it than age groups. You could have a 40-year-old who has only been riding five years competing against a 40-year-old who has been riding 30 years in the age groups.

Leveling provides riders to compete against other riders with a similar experience.

It is unrealistic to me to spend thousands of dollars to attend our largest show and not be able to show in both the select and age split divisions when we are able to do it all year long throughout the A level and regional level.

Stand Alone Moment This year at Canadian Nationals, my horse SVA Major Commotion won both the purebred hunter junior horse with my trainer, Linda Fuller, and the AATR 19-39. It was a lot of firsts for all three of us. We picked Major out as a 3-year-old, and it has been amazing to watch him come into his own and turn out to be such an incredible horse with the biggest heart.

When they called out the champion of my class, I was in complete shock, and someone on the rail had to tell me that they really did call my number.

Show Schedule Suggestion As a college student, I am unable to miss a week of classes, so sometimes I have to pick and choose which classes I can enter as it is more than a week long of showing. Making sure a cut and the final isn’t too spread out across the week would make it easier, because then I wouldn’t have to miss as much school.

Horse Show Loves I love spending time with people that I may not get to see often while I am away at school, spending lots (!) of quality time with my horses, and experiencing new places that I otherwise would never have the chance to see.

Arabian Horse Benefits I caught the horse bug when I was 8 years old. Knowing that my horse would be waiting for me at the end of an especially tough day helped me through my middle school and high school years, and they were always a constant in my life. They gave me a community I can count on; I met my best friends through riding, and always knew I had the support from my entire horse family.

These incredible animals taught me about compassion and the importance of hard work. Being lucky enough to compete at a high level gave me both confidence and humility, however, owning horses is not about ribbons or competition. I am equally as lucky to have ridden the naughty school ponies, groomed and loved on the retired horses, and to have sat in my first mare’s stall when she was sick because I was convinced it would make her feel better. I am lucky because I have had horses that have tested me, made me a better rider, and shown me that learning never stops.

FARM AFFILIATION: CL ANTON PERFORMANCE HORSES PECULIAR, MO # Times A U.S. Competitor 11 Stand Alone Moment In 2006, I lost my dad unexpectedly in a car accident. He had always been the one to drive me to horseback riding lessons when I was a little girl. Besides helping facilitate my horse passion, he had many passions of his own: traveling, being a Lewis & Clark reenactor, cycling, swimming, running and volunteering.

He believed it was very important to “have a reason to wake up in the morning.” That year, although it was devastating to lose my dad, it was exciting because I was competing at my very first U.S. Nationals—my reason to get up in the morning the rest of that year. BA Bask Prince and I (with some great help and talent from Alan Clanton) were Reserve National Champions in the H/A Hunter Pleasure AAOTR 40 & Over class that year. I know my dad was there riding every single step with me.

I haven’t topped that performance yet, but it’s fun to wake up every morning and keep trying!

I think that could be interesting if you had buy-in from people ahead of time that they would be willing to participate. After a horse has already proven itself, trainers and owners might be hesitant to ask for more. Maybe it would be a good idea to choose one discipline and experiment with it one year and see how it goes. What I would like to see more of are ride-offs. I think they add a lot of excitement to a class. I also like it when the judges call for transitions that aren’t necessarily considered standard.

Horse Show Loves What’s not to love about the horse show bubble? We’re blessed to be able to participate in a sport that allows us time away from the real world. It’s great to see old friends, make new ones, participate in the AHDF events, watch classes and cheer for your barn friends, fellow competitors and favorite horses.

Arabian Horse Benefits Besides my husband and family, horses have given me a “reason to get up in the morning.”

Horses have introduced me to the best people I know, people I consider to be lifelong friends. Horses have also brought me work opportunities, both writing for the Times and in the animal health arena. Horses have taught me perseverance, patience and the value of personal goal-setting. And on top of all that, they are a lot of fun to have around. I can’t imagine my life without horses.

Hobbies / Passions I love to watch my son’s high school rugby and football games. I also love to bake -- but I try not to do it too often because then I eat it! I make a really mean Praline Pecan Cheesecake!

I had Lucy at home and trained her myself for 11 months before nationals. We won our cut that day; the announcer calling our name and trotting out of the arena is something I will never forget. We went on to top ten in the finals later that week. I am forever thankful for the opportunity to show Lucy.

Show Schedule Suggestion My first thought is a later start time, but that’s mainly because I am not a morning person! A 9 am start time sounds really nice; that extra hour in the morning would be perfect.

Create Performance Grand Championships?

YES, 100%! I think a Grand Championship would be the icing on the cake. To get those top horses and riders in the ring competing for a Grand Championship would be exhilarating for the riders and spectators alike.

U.S. NATIONALS PROFILES Horse Show Loves Simply the horses and the people they have brought into my life. Whether we are hanging out at the stalls, trotting into the show pen, hand walking our horses on their day off, or watching classes, I love being with my horses and barn family.

Arabian Horse Benefits Everything. I truly do not know what I would do without horses and horse shows in my life.

Horses have taught me so much more about life than any teacher or book could have ever taught me. Responsibility, determination, patience, devotion, intuition, compassion, respect … horses and showing have taught it all.

# Times A U.S. Competitor As a youth (back in the late 70’s/early 80’s) I showed at U.S. a couple of times. This will be the fourth U.S. Nationals I’ve competed in as an adult.

Arabian Horse Benefits Owning and showing horses means so much more than the ribbons or roses. It’s something I work hard for and a passion that I get to share with my family. At the end of the day, whether I end up in the winner’s circle or not, I get do something I love ... on a horse that I love ... with the people I love.

Stand Alone Moment Not sure what year it was, but I remember watching Robin Porter wave to her mother (who was watching from the stands) after winning a national championship with Caliente Virtuoso. It was a very touching moment.

Show Schedule Suggestion For me, the biggest issue we’ve had is showing my stallion in Pleasure Driving Open and Amateur English Pleasure classes. These classes have consistently been too close together. Also, more classes (maybe a jackpot class) for older Amateur English Pleasure horses.

Arabian Horse Benefits Horses have been an integral part of my entire life. I thought I had left them behind when I got married and had a family. However, circumstances and fate led me back to Arabian horses and my life is richer again for it.

My friendships with the barn family have been terrific. But maybe more than that, the connection that I have with my horses is something that only horse people can understand.

Show Schedule Suggestion One of the things that produces a conflict for me is the halter and performance classes running at the same time. I would like to see halter start earlier in the show. I often miss my halter horses compete because I am in the performance ring. Which also means my husband and I miss each other’s classes. If we could eliminate class cut cancellations, I think the show could be smoother.

Show Schedule Suggestion Anymore there are a lot of cancelled cuts and some sessions only have a few classes in them.

It’s not fun for people, especially visitors, to sit and only get to see 2 or 3 classes. I’d like to see us better space the classes and look historically at what’s been having less cuts and better space the show out. It would be nice for exhibitors and for those viewing.

I’m not opposed to this, I think it would kind of be nice to see who’s the cream of the crop in each performance discipline and it would potentially give some riders another ride.

Horse Show Loves Being able to share the love of Arabian horses with other like-minded people always turns into a good time. Whether it is riding or congregating, our relationships make it all fun.

Arabian Horse Benefits So much! Inside the show world we get to gather out of our love for Arabians. But I also get to look into the eyes of a retired gentle gelding and take in the breath of the mare that is so proud of her baby. I love the beauty of a newborn foal and its curious outlook on its new life. These things bring me so much peace and happiness.

Hobbies / Passions I have a tremendous passion for empowering adult students, and especially young single mothers, to a better life through education.

Horse Show Loves I love the competition and the family that your barn becomes. And there’s else more exciting than trotting in the in gate.
