WE NEED TO COME TOGETHER In the Arabian horse community, the best thing about this time of year is that we have a lot to look forward to. The greatest show in the world, Scottsdale, is coming up and the foals of springtime are just a few months away. That’s when not only babies, but dreams too, are born. So, let’s look at 2024 with hope and optimism. If you are in the industry and reading this, I’m sure we share something very precious—our love for Arabian horses and the people who surround them. Looking into the future of our breed, we need all that love because a shift is necessary. The world, not just the Arabian breed, is full of change right now, and sadly, often full of division and noise. The good news is that we are not a social movement, a cause or a political party. I believe that we are a family, united in our love of the Arabian horse. So, let’s skip the noise and get things done. Our greatest asset is the Arabian horse’s versatility. At the same time, that’s also our greatest liability, because it means that everyone has different priorities and directions that they see as best for the breed. The first step toward real progress is for us to become thoroughly acquainted with the problems we face and their various solutions, and then make choices that can address everyone’s needs. In support of this, beginning this month, Arabian Horse Times will feature a monthly column called “State of the Industry,” where people who love the horse can present facts, along with their interpretations, on why change is important and what they believe will work best. We hope that this will help everyone to learn and respectfully discuss their thoughts in order to reach decisions that will serve everyone. I believe we can come together to do what is best for our horses and our industry. We can set our personal differences aside and listen to each other. Let’s draw on our love of the Arabian—share and share alike, as a normal, healthy family does. And let’s build a bright future for our beloved horses. I look forward to seeing you all soon. Have a great Scottsdale!

MAGHNUS +//

Maghnus Z+//: Mister Ambassador by THERESA CARDAMONE Maghnus Z+// is a quintessential Ambassador of the Arabian breed. Foaled in 2007, the Half-Arabian gelding exemplifies the finest qualities in both body and mind. Exceptionally wellbalanced and conformationally correct, his bold movement and proud carriage complete a near-perfect picture. Add in his intelligence, kindness, and ability to connect with a variety of humans, and he is the perfect choice to represent Arabian horses to the public, as he did at the 2023 Keystone Arabian Horse Experience in Ocala, Florida. Seeing him nuzzling a baby in a stroller at the event, one would never guess that Maghnus, in his previous career as an animated show horse, racked up a mind-boggling 32 National and three prestigious Scottsdale Championships or Reserves from 2010-2022. Bred by Jennifer Wilson, he was four years old when Jay and Maddy Winer fell in love with him at Rohara Arabians after Joe Alberti brought him out for them. “Maghnus first came to my barn when he was two-and-a-half,” relates Joe. “When the Winers bought him a year or two later and decided to keep him with me, I was grateful; he truly is the horse of a lifetime.” Maddy couldn’t agree more. “Maghnus is the love of our lives,” she shares enthusiastically. “As soon as I saw him in the ring, I fell for him—his joy for performing brought tears to my eyes. So, when he went up for sale, we jumped at the opportunity to buy him and keep him in Joe’s capable hands. Never for a moment have I regretted our decision. Maghnus and Joe taught me how to show. The unduplicated number of national championships and reserves Maghnus achieved were all under the care of Joe Alberti.” Maghnus already had four U.S. National Championships and one U.S. and one Canadian National Reserve Championship when the Winers acquired him. He then added 16 more national championships (14 U.S./two Canadian) and 10 reserves (8 U.S./two Mid Summer) under their ownership. Ar abian Horse Times | 18 | Volume 54, No. 1

Competing almost exclusively in national-level halter competitions, Maghnus also won two top ten awards in Performance Halter (2020 and 2021), and one in Sport Horse Show Hack (2021). With so many national titles giving him lifetimes of qualification, he competed sparingly in regional competition. Nevertheless, in addition to his three Scottsdale wins, he garnered 11 Regional Championships and three reserves in only six regional shows, including the 2020 Region 15 Reserve Champion Ladies Side Saddle title. Maghnus Z+// loves the show ring and never fails to demonstrate his pleasure. As he matured, Joe noticed that Maghnus began to pump himself up while approaching the entry gate—flagging his tail, snorting, and blowing as he bounced into the arena, ready to be admired. At home, if Maghnus spied a horse trailer anywhere near the barn, he began to neigh in anticipation of another opportunity to be on display. “He is an amazing animal,” Joe continues. “He absolutely knows when to ‘turn it on’ and when to relax. He is very quiet in his stall or walking down the barn aisle, but if he is in the show ring or being presented to visitors, he switches to another gear. He loves going to horse shows, and we have always strived to keep it that way.” Joe explains, “That’s why he has stayed so young-looking, fresh, and happy for so long. We never tried to keep him ‘show ring ready’ 12 months of the year. Instead, he spent half the year enjoying his turnout every day. Then, when summer approached, we slowly brought him back, ready to go and compete at the Nationals.” It was, without a doubt, a winning formula. “We are not sure what is next for Maghnus,” Maddy offers. “I love him being an ambassador, and he loves the role. This was his second year doing it; his attitude is amazing, and we both enjoy it. He accomplished so much as a halter horse; he’s earned a vacation, at least for now. But, showing again is not totally out of his future since he loves the ring even more than he loves his carrots!” Ar abian Horse Times | 19 | Volume 54, No. 1

COVER STORY

Lifelong Arabian enthusiast, Lisa Blackstone, has made the equine world her passion. From numerous national championships in Arabian and Half-Arabian English and Country English Pleasure and international judging, to her legal practice involved in equine law, Lisa is truly immersed in the world of horses. Seeking a new challenge in her life as a competitor, Lisa sought to ride and compete in today’s western pleasure discipline, but first, she had to find her horse. Story by CATHERINE COLE FERANDELLI

Lisa recalls approaching Shamrock Farms’ Joe Reser in the summer of 2022. “Observing that Joe was a terrific instructor, as well as a great trainer,” she notes, “I felt certain he could pair me with the right horse, and he immediately started the search.” Fortunately for Lisa, breeder Frank Chisholm (Palmetto Arabians) sent PA Madelyn to Joe for training that fall with the purpose of being sold. Initially, Frank wanted Madelyn to replace for her dam, May Dancer V, a multi-national western pleasure champion and one of Frank’s foundation mares. Sired by KM Bugatti, Madelyn was the perfect blend of Fame VF and Varian bred Western Pleasure talent and beauty; plus, her sweet nature and charisma were incomparable. However, Frank made the decision to downsize his Arabian horse business and disperse some of his bloodstock. After a few weeks at Shamrock Farms, Joe called Lisa, saying “I think we have a very special mare here. I’m calling you first.” With that, she jumped on the next plane.

Smitten the moment she laid eyes on Madelyn, Lisa thought to herself, “This is the best moving western horse I think I’ve ever seen. This is the one.” She bought Madelyn that day and now says “I feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to own her. I am so grateful to Frank, Joe, Carrie and Leslie!” Since then, Lisa travels regularly between her home near Atlanta and Shamrock Farms near Dallas. “Everyone at Shamrock Farms is so welcoming, the barn atmosphere calm, and the horses are happy,” says Lisa. “I started riding her right away, learning from Joe how to, as he says it, ‘calm my English seat down’!” Joe’s 2023 goals were to get Lisa riding in a western saddle as well as competing on Madelyn himself. In her first major debut, Madelyn won the Spotlight Futurity Arabian Western Pleasure class at Region 12, a fantastic result before taking on the AWPA Futurity at the 2023 U.S. Nationals. When U.S. Nationals arrived, Madelyn had a fan club assembled, all eager to watch her and Joe compete with the very best 4-year-old purebred Western Pleasure contenders. Madelyn’s biggest admirer (next to Lisa and Joe) is Sarah Stone, former Palmetto Arabians’ breeding manager. She was confident when stating, “I always knew Madelyn would be a national champion. I knew it cuddling with Madelyn when she was just one hour old.” Lisa credits Sarah with Madelyn’s amazing disposition. “She was obviously treated as a family member from birth and would rather be with people than eat her grain!” Filled with top-of-the-line contenders, one of the AWPA judges commented that it was one of the best western pleasure classes she had ever seen in her judging career. “Madelyn and Joe put in a gorgeous performance!” says Lisa. “Her gaits are close to perfection and her willingness is amazing. She never complains and always tries to do exactly what you ask of her.” Announced as AWPA champion amidst whoops, hugs and cheers, Madelyn’s admirers ran to the winners’ circle for championship photos, including Madelyn’s breeder Frank Chisholm and Kristi Waters, owner of KM Bugatti. “It was one of the most significant moments in my lifetime of showing,” Lisa reflects. “I am humbled and grateful to all who support Madelyn, love her like I do, and made that moment come true.” Lisa’s journey with Madelyn will gain more ground in 2024, as she plans to show her in the amateur division. Her husband Stephen, her biggest fan, says, “Watching Lisa compete gives me as much joy as it gives her. This is a fresh challenge for her, and we are grateful to own a mare like Madelyn and have the guidance of Joe.” v Ar abian Horse Times | 5 | AW PA Futurity

WELCOME TO THE

ARABIAN WESTERN PLEASURE ASSOCIATION The AWPA is thrilled to be involved in promoting this incredible group of stallions, breeders, trainers, owners and young horses. There are 106 stallions enrolled this year….. our largest group EVER, and the seventh year in a row to have over 90 stallions nominated! We are so appreciative of each stallion owner who has supported the AWPA. This program is successful thanks to you and the committed mare owners who continue to breed and produce talented Western Pleasure prospects. The 2024 AWPA Stallion Service Auction will be online through the Arabian Horse Times website March 1st – 5th. Foals resulting from breedings purchased in the Auction will be eligible for an additional $53,000 in prize money in the 2029 Futurities. As we look back on 2023, we were immensely proud of the quality of the competition in our four classes. The U.S. National AWPA Futurities were once again must-see classes at the show! Both Champions were dominant, winning by over 30 points, which is very difficult to do with a 5-judge panel. Congratulations to all the connections. We handed out over $274,000 in prize money in 2023…our highest annual payout to date! We aim to continue the growth of the program in the years to come. For the second year, the AWPA rewarded the owners of stallions who sired Futurity entries that showed….over $20,000 was paid out to them. The Auction Foal Bonus Payout was also significant. The Futurity entries in the Top 14 who were the result of breedings purchased in the 2018 Stallion Service Auction were given a split of the $49,000 reserved monies -- $5,940 to each of the five Purebred Auction foals and $3,300 to each of the six Half-Arabian Auction foals. As established several years ago, our Top Ten winners took home incredible prizes. The most coveted item in Tulsa (other than trophies), was once again the AWPA Exhibitor Bags. They were a huge hit, with thousands of dollars worth of goodies for each Futurity entrant. We so appreciate everyone who generously sponsored items. We could not offer the Futurities & Maturities without our partnerships with Arabian Horse Times and Equine Athlete Veterinary Services. A big THANK YOU to them and to all our sponsors who make these classes so special.

AWPA GUIDELINES STALLION NOMINATION Stallions may be enrolled annually for the fee of $1,000 by the deadline of December 1st of the year preceding the stallion auction. For example, to have a stallion enrolled for the 2024 year, the paperwork and payment must be submitted by December 1, 2023. Nomination forms can be found at arabianwesternpleasure.com. One (1) breeding must be donated to the AWPA Stallion Service Auction. A stallion owner may choose to donate two (2) breedings, one Purebred and one Half-Arabian, for their $1,000 nomination fee. • Whether the owner donates one or two breedings, the nomination fee remains at $1,000.00. •

In order for both Purebred and Half-Arabian foals of the nominated stallion to be eligible to compete in the corresponding classes, the stallion must offer BOTH a Purebred and Half-Arabian breeding in the Auction.

The stallion owner agrees to be the purchaser of the auction donated breeding if it does not sell at auction, for the minimum bid of $1,000.

Foals resulting from breedings purchased in the Auction are eligible for additional class prize money that will be split evenly among the Top 14 AWPA Auction foals in the Finals – no matter the placing in the class.

Stallion owners receive one ‘Auction’ breeding with their paid nomination. This breeding can be used on a mare of the stallion owner’s choice or can be sold by the Stallion owner for any fee the stallion owner chooses. An in-utero Mare Nomination must be submitted by December 31st with payment of $100. For every three (3) stallions one stallion owner nominates, they will receive a fourth stallion nomination at no charge. Stallions who sire the Champions in the 2024 AWPA Purebred and Half-Arabian Futurity classes will receive a 2025 stallion enrollment at no charge.

MARE NOMINATION In order for foals sired by an AWPA nominated stallion to be eligible to participate in the Futurity and Maturity classes, they must be nominated in-utero by submitting a Mare Nomination Form. Mares must be nominated before the end of the breeding/auction year for a $100 fee. December 31, 2024, for this year. Nomination forms can be found at arabianwesternpleasure.com. Any mare that has been bred to an AWPA enrolled stallion can be nominated. However, the stallion must have been enrolled in the type of class the foal would compete in. For instance, if a stallion only offers a Purebred breeding in the program, then Half-Arabian foals would not be eligible, and Mare Nominations would not be accepted. The breeding does not have to be purchased in the AWPA Stallion Service Auction.

LIMITED OPEN BONUS In addition to the class prize money at U.S. Nationals, a $2,500 bonus will be awarded to the owner of the horse with the highest placing Limited Open rider in both the AWPA Purebred and Half-Arabian Futurity Finals. All entries with eligible riders will automatically be entered in the Limited Open division. No additional payment is required to be eligible for the added Limited Open prize money. Limited Open Eligibility Riders who have won five (5) or more National Champion or Reserve Champion titles at Canadian, Mid Summer and/or U.S. Nationals will not be eligible for the Limited Open added money. Arabian and Half-Arabian Western Pleasure classes that count towards eligibility include Open, Junior Horse, 3 Year-Old Futurity and the AWPA Futurity.

Rider eligibility is based on AHA rider records beginning in 2001. Any national tiltes won prior to 2001 will bot be counted toward eligibility. Amateur and Youth rideres are not eligible for the Limited Open Bonus.

AWPA GUIDELINES ENTRIES The ONLY four-year-olds allowed to compete in the U.S. National AWPA Futurities will strictly be those who were nominated in-utero by December 31st of their breeding year. • Each year’s Mare Nomination list is posted on the AWPA website, and shows the nominated breedings. The ONLY four and five-year-olds allowed to compete in the AWPA Maturities will strictly be those who were nominated in-utero by December 31st of their breeding year. • Each year’s Mare Nomination list is posted on the AWPA website, and shows the nominated breedings. An AWPA Class Entry Form must be submitted to the AWPA by the show entry deadline. The AWPA class entry fee is $700. The form can be found at arabianwesternpleasure.com. • This is in addition to the AHA entry form. • All other entry and office fees charged by National shows must be paid directly to the show.

CLASS GUIDELINES The U.S. National AWPA Futurity classes are open to four-yearolds who were nominated in-utero by December 31st of their breeding year. The AWPA Maturity classes are open to four and five-year-olds shown who were nominated in-utero by December 31st of their breeding year, and to be shown by an Adult Amateur Owner rider. A five judge total points system will be used. Each Judge’s placing will be ranked and points applied according to the following table: 1st = 40 2nd = 36 3rd = 32 4th = 28 5th = 24 6th = 20 7th = 16 8th = 12 9th = 8 10th = 4 11th – 14th = 0 The Board will select the five judges from the panels at each National show. Quality is the number one criterion for judging, followed by performance, suitability, and manners. • A stallion or gelding showing with their penis substantially exposed (flaccid or erect) in any portion of the class, will be considered to have a major manner’s violation. Judges will be advised to score the horse so as not to receive a placing in the class. Class eliminations will be run as a standard Western Pleasure Junior Horse class. • Elimination cuts will not ask for horses to be stripped of tack, and the lineup will have all horses face one rail, side by side. • Fourteen (14) horses total will advance to the final. The Final will be run as a standard Western Pleasure Junior Horse class. Upon completion of the rail portion, horses will be called to line up head to tail. • Two attendants per horse will be allowed into the arena to assist with removing saddles and pads. They are allowed to bring a saddle rack, towel, and brush. • Riders are to stand up their horse to be assessed for conformational suitability to Western Pleasure by the judges. • Once the judging panel has completed their examination of a horse, it should be resaddled. • After all horses have retacked, riders will be asked to remount and attendants will be excused from the ring. • The Top Ten will be called out in numerical order. • The Reserve Champion and then the Champion will be placed and given their awards. The horses will leave the arena in reverse order of their placings (10th place first and Champion last).

LANDON EQUESTRIAN: R E S E A R C H . R E P R O D U C E . R E P E AT. BY CAI T L I N P I G OT T

Ar abian Horse Times | 5 | A.E.P.A Futurity

Landon Equestrian is a family-first farm nestled in one of the most gorgeous parts of central California – the Santa Ynez Valley. This area of the country has seen some of the greatest performance and halter horses the Arabian breed has to offer over the years. But Jim Lowe

– a trainer who has a long-standing relationship with the breed and the region – says this valley has a new thing worth talking about – a passionate, pedigree-savant named Brooke Landon.

“There is not another Brooke Landon out there,” Jim Lowe said about the 16-year-old. “She has idols like Sheila Varian and Tim and

Marty Shea. Our breed needs someone who is as passionate as her about breeding and raising horses. These young trainers need new, fresh stock.”

Landon sits at the helm of her family’s breeding program, which is heavily focused on the purebred and Half-Arabian English pleasure division. The family owns the purebred Arabian stallions Black Daniels (IXL Noble Express x Victoria Bey) and Royal Nobility (VJ Royal Heir x Joleen WB), along with a recent addition of the purebred Friesian stallion named Thomas (Matthys 504 x Famke Adel B).

BLACK DANIELS Ar abian Horse Times | 6 | A.E.P.A Futurity

BLACK DANIELS

Ar abian Horse Times | 7 | A.E.P.A Futurity

the Black Daniels Legacy This somewhat “new to the block” family and breeding program made a gamechanging decision when they bought the stallion Black Daniels. Had we tracked

the most-used phrase during the conversations preparing for this piece, the two words, “Black Daniels” would have won by a landslide. Even Landon’s businessminded father perked up when chatting about this accomplished stallion.

“We are so fortunate to have been able to make Black Daniels part of our operation,” Hayden Landon states. “I think he is just beautiful and that he expands our possibilities as a breeding program.”

Along with his own 2023 National Reserve Championship in the Arabian Park Open with Jim Lowe, Black Daniels was named as a leading sire of national saddle

ROL ASCENSION

seat winners.

Black Daniels’ progeny includes some of today’s most exciting names in the

country English and English pleasure divisions. ROL Ascension (Black Daniels x HA Ghrace Under Fire) started 2023 off with a Scottsdale Championship in Arabian

English Pleasure with Wyatt Budd. He went on to win Championships at Region 12

crack me up

SIRED BY BLACK DANIELS

and Region 14 and earned a US National Top Ten for owner Felix Cantu of Rancho Las Potrancas.

SR Cracklin Thunder (Black Daniels x Thunder Woman) is an impressive Half-

Arabian gelding who captivated many audiences all season long. He earned two National Championships at the 2023 Youth Nationals with Peyton Bergstad and was a top finisher in the Half-Arabian Country English Pleasure Junior Horse with Joel Kiesner.

Black Label VH (Black Daniels x JB Rose Afire) was the judges’ pick as US National

Champion in the Arabian Country English Pleasure Junior Horse with Jessica Clinton. Four-year-old Half-Arabian Crack Me Up (Black Daniels x Valentina’s

Jewels) was named US National Reserve Champion in the Half-Arabian AEPA

Futurity with Nestor Gonzalez for owner Sandra Fiorenza, and Countess De Black (Black Daniels x MD Aquarius), owned by Teal Dowling and Jean O’Leary, earned

US National Reserve Championships in both the Arabian Park AAOTR and English Pleasure AAOTR 19-49 with Teal Dowling.

Bayonce (Black Daniels x Laurel Hill Pennies From Heaven), owned by Kimberly

Jarvis, earned a Youth National Championship in the Half-Arabian English Pleasure Choice JTR with Kate Long.

Finally, full siblings Afirey Fireball VM and Afirey Brandy VM (Black Daniels x Afirey

Josephine VM) both finished with National Reserve Championships. After last

COUNTESS DE BLACK

year’s exciting performance that earned Afirey Fireball VM a US National Reserve

Championship in the Purebred AEPA for owners Pine Valley Arabians, he and trainer Dalton Budd earned another bronze trophy in the Arabian English Pleasure Junior Horse, and Afirey Brandy VM was the US National Reserve Champion in the Arabian Country English Pleasure AAOTR 19-39 with owner Julia Brennan.

These horses’ successes under multiple training programs and in multiple

“Black Daniels has turned out to be the best thing for the Landon Equestrian

breeding program,” Lowe shares. “He is a working machine. I had no idea he had that kind of drive in him until I went to show him for the first time. That horse and his babies have back ends that are full of power.”

Black Daniels has quickly become a point of pride for the entire Landon family. Previous owner and trainer, Rob Bick complimented the family and Lowe. “I am very happy that Brooke and her family have Black Daniels. He is such a special

horse to be around, and I know they see that in him. Also, as a breeder, I think Brooke has the makings of being the next Sheila Varian.”

Trying New Things With Royal Nobility And Thomas “At Landon Equestrian, we want to be introducing some new bloodlines to the

Arabian horse community and AEPA programs,” Landon stated about her plans.

“Our new Friesian Thomas has exquisite natural movement, and we hope that

disciplines is not a shock based on Lowe’s assessment of the teenager’s sire.

black label vh

afirey fireball vm

translates into some impressive, fresh-looking English pleasure horses.”

Royal Nobility is another purebred stallion owned by the Landon family. He was purchased to be a teammate for Brooke and a part of their breeding program.

“Brooke and Royal Nobility have a friendship,” Lowe says about the purebred English horse. “He has a great mind and has built Brooke’s confidence as a rider. I am excited to see what some of his foals do.”

For breeding connoisseur Landon, Royal Nobility is revered for his even

Bayonce

temperament and his lineage. This young breeder is obsessive – in the best way – when it comes to bloodlines. Royal Nobility has MHR Nobility (one of Lowe’s all-time favorites), Brassmis, and Bask in his pedigree. These horses have produced some of Landon’s favorite horses.

“I have done my homework,” Landon stated in reference to her unique breeding

plans. “I hope that Landon Equestrian helps to diversify the kinds of English horses we have in our industry. We want to use our fresh perspective to try something

different than what everyone else is doing. I feel good that my family, Jim, and other respected breeders are encouraging my plans.”

afirey brandy vm

One of the most “different” things Landon Equestrian has done

is purchase purebred Friesian stallion Thomas (Matthys 504

x Famke Adel B by Jehannes 484), along with his dam Famke Adel B (Jehannes 484 x Adelfamke Ineke B. by Jerke 434). It has become common practice for breeders to cross Friesian and Arabian blood to create a round-necked and big-bodied

Half-Arabian hunter horse, but Landon has plans to use Thomas’ tall neck and high-stepping stride to create country English and English pleasure horses.

Landon Equestrian & The AEPA The AEPA gives important framework and opportunities for all

levels of breeding programs. Everyone surrounding Landon

Equestrian is excited about being involved in “the Godfather” of 4-year-old national performance futurity classes.

“One of my favorite things about the AEPA is watching the futurity at U.S. Nationals,” Landon said about the long-standing

breeding and money program. “It’s such a good time to see what these stallions can produce and gets people thinking about their

Famke Adel B PUREBRED FRIESIAN MARE

breeding plans for the next year.”

Landon goes on to state that she feels that class helps set the

market demand for breeders’ following seasons. It was impressive to hear such a young person talk about horse breeding using

such business-centric and strategic terminology. Not many 16-year-olds are forgoing traditional school to take online classes to allow themselves time to pursue passions in tech and horse breeding.

“Brooke has done her research, and we hope to put that research

to good use,” reiterates Hayden Landon. “We are bringing in the best people possible to help us with the horses, but – above all

else – this is a family thing, and we are having fun. However, as a businessman I really appreciate the validation that a program like AEPA can give our farm.”

Landon Equestrian might be a newer name to the performance ring and breeding world, but as Lowe stated to open the article,

the well-researched Landon has big plans and even bigger aspirations. Lowe makes another sound argument when he speaks to the benefit of having a robust English breeding

program on the west coast. He hopes that Landon Equestrian can produce some quality foals for himself and his regional colleagues to select from.

thomas PUREBRED FRIESIAN COLT

If Landon’s plans work out in the way she thinks, then hearing the phrase “bred by Landon Equestrian” – while announcing regional and national winners – will become very familiar, very quicky.

IS YOUR STALLION’S STOCK

rising? HOW ABOUT YOUR BREEDING HOWPROGRAM? ABOUT

YOUR BREEDING PROGRAM? “

As long-time breeders of the Arabian horse, we take our roles as stewards of their continued success seriously. And there is no better way to be assured we are making the right choices or need to change direction than to regularly check in with our stallions’ progeny to see what impact our breeding decisions are having in producing quality offspring. Big or small, it can become quite a task to keep track of, but AHT does it for us; giving us a great way to promote our stallions and program success rate. ~Marty Shea

THE ARABIAN ENGLISH PERFORMANCE ASSOCIATION

with Peter Conway

The AEPA has had a tremendous impact on breeding programs and the quality of our saddle seat horses. The video played prior to the classes at U.S. Nationals highlighted the incredible horses that have come through the program and influenced the breed. Our pattern class is unique. It isn’t designed to show how well each horse performs to the pattern, but rather to allow the judges and the audience to evaluate the horse’s gaits, along with carriage and frame. Each gait is scored against the standard, which is fully defined in the AEPA Manifesto found on our website. Following the individual evaluations, the TOP 10 compete in collective rail classes with $150,000 on the line. Nothing can match the level of excitement and prestige of these classes. The AEPA was founded to promote the Arabian English horse, to ensure the continuation and appreciation of these magnificent animals. Bring your passion forward again this year and purchase a breeding in the AEPA auction. Special thanks to Arabian Horse Times and Equine Athlete Veterinary Services, for supporting our Nationals classes, and to Strawberry Banks Farm and Conway Arabians, for their support of the Keystone Pro Am and Scottsdale Maturity. Most of all, THANK YOU, to every stallion owner that donates a breeding, and every breeder that buys one in the auction. It is your love of the Arabian English horse that makes this all possible. Remember that … ~ A donated breeding makes every foal sired this year by your stallion eligible for every AEPA class. No nomination fess, no forms to fill out. Every foal is automatically enrolled. (Auction foals must be enrolled in utero to receive the extra prize money). ~ Foals that are enrolled as AUCTION breedings receive an extra 25% on all winnings in the U.S. Nationals AEPA purebred or Half-Arabian Futurity. Stallion owners that donate an auxiliary breeding that sells in the auction also receive an AUCTION breeding. Created to serve breeders and to promote the Arabian English performance horse, get involved, breed wonderful horses, enjoy the competition, and have these horses in your life! —Peter Conway, President

STATE OF THE INDUSTRY

with Peter and Lori Conway

In the last 20 years, the Arabian horse industry has seen: • •

Over 60% decline in membership Over 72% decline in registered Arabians and Half-Arabians

• •

Decline in the number of Class A shows Decline in Regional Championship Show participation

If any of the above startles you, you’re not alone. In the past two decades, as the number of horses in the U.S. has remained relatively stable, the Arabian horse industry has been on the losing team. AHT recently sat down with Peter and Lori Conway, long-time breeders, dedicated volunteers and leaders in the Arabian horse community. Their take? The Arabian horse community is in a precarious position and it’s time for everyone to take action.

The Conways hosted a forum discussion with approximately 60 industry leaders at their Ocala farm in November 2023, which led to a consensus that now is the time for change. Attendees included AHA Board members, the Executive Director, a Past President, show managers, farm owners, breeders and trainers. The questions asked were in response to the startling statistics above. How do we turn around our Arabian horse breed? How do we reverse the dangerous downward trends within our industry? And most importantly, what can we do to make our organization more effective? The group was challenged to be positive and forward focused. Here are some of their findings, as shared by Peter and Lori.

What is the state of the industry and why?

Precarious. The numbers above should alarm any Arabian horse enthusiast. As identified by the group, although many dedicated people have tried various initiatives over the past 20 years, those initiatives have failed to reverse the declining numbers. The problem, as this group identified, is that the Arabian Horse Association’s (AHA) primary mission, promoting the Arabian horse, has been hindered by an outdated, antiquated and cumbersome organizational structure with a board that is far too large for the size of the organization. The result has been a steady decline in membership, registrations and show participation. As identified by this group, and two consulting organizations (one hired in 2003 and one in 2007) the current board structure is unsustainable. Here’s why: • • •

Organization is unable to react effectively in today’s fast-paced, rapidly changing business environment. The end result: business challenges are not addressed in a timely manner, resulting in further deteriorating conditions. Outdated and ineffective governance structure. The end result: by continuing to assign board members in the current manner (regional directors, Trust appointees, etc.) we may not have the most qualified businesspeople making decisions to move the business of AHA forward. Lack of effective long-term strategic planning. The end result: although the decline was identified nearly two decades ago, we continue to spiral downwards instead of making progress.

What needs to be done?

This group, with the support of other Arabian enthusiasts, is recommending the following changes for consideration:

Restructure the Governance of AHA

As recommended by both consulting firms, the governance structure of AHA needs to be changed. Here are some specifics that are being brought forth: •

Reduce the size of the Board to a more manageable size (AHA currently has a board comprised of 29 people, compare that to organizations far larger to understand the disparity). Make the board directly accountable to membership. Ar abian Horse Times | 208 | Volume 54, No. 1

“Greatness is not in where we stand but in what direction we are moving. We must sail, sometimes with the wind and sometimes against it – but sail we must and not drift, nor lie at anchor.” ~ Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.

• • •

Amend current requirement that Board members be a designated representative from a particular region of the country. Instead, create a Board based on a set of defined qualifications for executive level Board members. Ideally, Board members should have both the business experience and a deep understanding of the Arabian horse community. Empower Regional Directors to appoint a portion of the Board. Enable the delegation to elect a majority of the Board members.

• • •

Developing long-term strategies to spur growth in the Arabian horse industry. Actively seeking input from membership to help spark excitement and engagement. Modernizing operational tools and adopting a business-like approach to improve efficiency and member experience.

Besides changing the governance structure, which the group feels is critical to moving forward, other recommendations include:

What should individuals who are reading this article right now do?

Every person can make a difference and the first thing Peter asks is for people to join the team. Sign up to receive news, meeting announcements and updates from the Arabian Horse Promotional Fund at their website, https://arabianhorsepromotionalfund.com/. The group’s goal is to “promote the Arabian horse to people beyond its existing community through a variety of different efforts introducing, educating and attracting people to the breed.” Led by board members Becky Nash, Lisa Blackstone, Mary Trowbridge and Peter Conway, the group is committed to helping facilitate change to the Association’s structure. Besides email updates, they plan to host monthly Zoom calls to keep members informed and engaged. Their goal: achieve the 2/3 majority needed to change the association structure during the 2024 convention.

Interested?

Watch for details about upcoming calls and read the notes from the meeting, which can be found on the site as well.

“It’s not our horses, we know that,” says Peter. “And it’s not our people. It’s the structure of the governing organization and we can change that.”

What is the Arabian Horse Promotional Fund?

Founded in 2018, the Arabian Horse Promotional Fund is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the Arabian horse to people beyond its existing community through events to introduce, educate and attract people to Arabian horses. Funded solely by donations, some of their initiatives are:

~ Keystone Arabian Horse Experience Charity Event

Keystone classes are held during the AHAF Holiday Festival Show with funds from the classes benefitting the Black Stallion Reading Project and Horses & Heroes of Marion County.

~ Arabian Horse Riding Academy

This initiative is a youth program that allows children to develop equestrian skills at their own pace and offers grant and work programs for families to fulfill their dreams of riding an Arabian horse.

~ Experience Arabian Horses Magazine

This free quarterly publication is designed to help introduce new people to the breed by showcasing the versatility and beauty of the Arabian horse. AT ROYAL ARABIANS

Royal Arabians’ Cindy McGown and Mark Davis celebrated the season of giving by hosting a Christmas party and trail ride December 16th and 17th at their sunny Scottsdale, Arizona location. Saturday night’s festive scene saw Royal family friends and clients enjoy a beautiful evening of fellowship and cheer while reminiscing on the year’s memorable moments and successes. Sunday kicked off Royal’s annual trail ride. Twenty riders in Christmas sweaters along with their equine companions saddled up for a 2 ½ hour ride followed by a tailgating party. While most of the horses were Arabians, some National Champion show horses and others amazing broodmares from Royal Arabians’ collection of mares, also present were a few beautiful Friesians, a Gypsy Vanner and two Quarter Horses. It was another exciting day for all, especially those who have been out of the saddle for a while, to enjoy horses, each other and a perfectly beautiful Scottsdale day. n

2 5th Ranch-a-versar y Of

Jessica Bein Performance Horses The Bein family celebrated their 25th Ranch-aversary of Jessica Bein Performance Horses in Scottsdale Arizona, on Saturday, January 19, 2024 with 100 family members, friends and clients; 25 years in business and five years of that at their current location. The evening began with an opening prayer by Jessica’s husband, David, followed by camaraderie, smoked pulled pork, burnt ends and sausage by Chef Anthony, and an open barn serving Old Fashioneds against the backdrop of a DJ. Midway, Jessica thanked those who have supported her along the way, including her Lord and savior Jesus Christ, from whom all blessings flow and for giving them the vision and perseverance to start with just a few horses, to the program they have today; followed by her first three clients who were present: Marti Fathauer, Brenda Hathway, and Tara McCreary. She recounted the first time she saw the love of her life in horse flesh, and despite that first time trying her and everything going wrong, she fought against the doubt and defeat and trusted her gut, because when she first locked eyes with the mare, her intuition told her she was the one. That year, the 4-year-old mare and Tara earned a National Top Ten in Reining JTR, before everyone got a top ten at nationals, and later they both won their first national championships. That mare was Im Destinees Hobby+//, Jessica notes, whom she acknowledges was a pivotal point in her career, and with her family’s support behind her, earned more riders national championships and opportunities to shine than any other horse she ever rode. It was an evening of thanks, ending with Lauren Whyte Thomas, a youth rider who later became Jessica’s assistant, helping to build the program with her mare Quais Habibi+//, the foundation of their breeding program, and to all those whom both Jessica and David are FOREVER grateful to who believed in, supported, and held them accountable, walking beside them on their journey. And it was truly a privilege to share it all with their children McKenna and Bryton. n Ar abian Horse Times | 214 | Volume 54, No. 1

IN MEMORIAM

Dana Dallas Sibbet (1964-2023)

Pyro Thyme SA (2000-2024)

Dana Dallas Sibbet, age 59, of Prior Lake, MN, passed away at home on December 13, 2023. Born November 8, 1964, in Minneapolis to father Donald Harlow Sibbet and mother Ramona Helmer Sibbet, he was the youngest of four boys. Dana graduated from New Prague High School in 1983. During his senior year of high school, he met his future wife Peg Lang. After high school he began college part time at Normandale in Bloomington, while working full time in the early stages of the family business, RaDon Inc. Dana and Peg were married in 1989 and welcomed Evan Mitchell Sibbet in 1998. He enjoyed watching all of Evan’s sporting events, and had a passion for motorsports, racing both motor-cross and snocross for many years. He loved to watch auto racing, was an avid Vikings fan, and enjoyed ice fishing on Prior Lake. One of his most cherished life-time achievements was being awarded the United Professional Horsemen’s Association Sallie B. Wheeler Distinguished Service Award in 2006. Dana’s life work for 40 years was devoted to creating premier custom show horse apparel, stall draperies, tack containers, and accessories for the Saddlebred, Morgan, Arabian, and Draft Horse markets. In 2015 Dana sold his ownership stake in RaDon Inc. to start his own business under the Appointments USA brand. Under Dana’s leadership, Appointments USA has evolved into a major force in the show horse industry with his signature product being the Wardrobe Valet. He considered his team at the company his family, and he deeply enjoyed cultivating unique relationships with his customers across the country. Dana’s legacy will live on with Evan. He was so proud knowing his son would continue what he started. Dana is survived by his son, Evan Sibbet; former wife, Margaret (Peg) Lang; lifelong friend and companion, Cary Bartz; former in laws, Jim & Carole Lang and the entire Lang family; his Appointments USA family; his brothers, Darrel, Don, and Duane; and many other family members and friends.

One of the brightest lights in the Arabian horse world was extinguished with the passing of Pyro Thyme SA (Pryme Thyme x Holly Onfire JW, by Katz) on January 12, 2024. Bred by June and Tom Yahola, his pedigree includes the immortal *Bask through Negatraz and Gdansk; Khemosabi, Raffon, El Paso and Bay-Abi. Pyro Thyme’s natural affinity to humans and an abundance of assured self-confidence and commanding charisma led to a natural and stress-free transition to the show ring. With Mike Neal, he earned U.S. National Champion Futurity Colt in 2003 and two years later, won the ultimate honour of Scottsdale Champion Senior Stallion, 41 years after his illustrious ancestor *Bask was awarded the same title, as well as Champion Park Horse, in his era-defining show ring debut. Later that same year, Pyro Thyme was awarded U.S. National Reserve Champion Junior Stallion. In late 2006, Pyro Thyme entered the lives of Claire & Margaret Larson, and Angie & Andy Sellman, whose destinies would be forever entwined, beginning in 2007 when he was named unanimous U.S. National Champion Senior Stallion. Aging with perfection and in his prime, Pyro Thyme would return in 2012 amongst serious competition from many exceptional younger stallions, and in front of an electric crowd, once again take the title of National Champion Stallion. With just under 200 lifetime foals to his credit, the enduring impact of Pyro Thyme the sire continues to reap positive dividends throughout the breed worldwide. Like the greatest sires and performers of the past from whom he proudly descends, Pyro Thyme can be found as an essential ancestor in the pedigrees of elite athletes and national champions in nearly every division of equine sport in which the Arabian horse excels, and is celebrated in the pedigrees of dozens of international champions on all six inhabited continents. Pyro Thyme was incredibly fortunate to spend the final years of his charmed existence in retirement at Om El Arab in Santa Ynez, California.

He is preceded in death by his parents and nephew, Shawn. Ar abian Horse Times | 220 | Volume 54, No. 1
