ARABIAN BREEDERS WORLD CUP

Celebrating the Arabian Horse and the Global Arabian Community in Scottsdale

Showcasing the inherent natural beauty, tireless exuberance and captivating presence of the Arabian horse in an outdoor setting on the verdant manicured polo fields of WestWorld set against the stark desert backdrop of Sonoran saguaros and the magnificent McDowell Mountain range, enhanced by reliable Arizona spring sunshine, clear crisp mornings, warm invigorating afternoons and mild softly lit evenings, is a sure-fire combination for success. Once again, for the third successive year after departing the globally recognized venue of South Point in Las Vegas, the Arabian Breeders World Cup (ABWC), North America’s trendsetting international halter event, called Scottsdale home for the 16th iteration of the show, inviting breeders, owners and enthusiasts from across the globe to celebrate the best of the breed in the American Southwest in mid-April.

Despite fewer entries than years past, quality still reigned supreme over quantity, with world-class horses forward in every division. The distinguished panel of judges not only

did a superlative job of assessing entries according to the breed ideal in qualifying classes using the industry standard World Cup scoring system, but most capably sorted the best of horses present to Gold, Silver and Bronze medal positions in Sunday’s comparative supreme championships.

Depth of quality was apparent in all sections of Arabian males and females, be it the yearling, junior or senior horse. Several of the most widely used sires, both locally in North America as well as worldwide, continued to prove their trailblazing dominance, with Dominic M, D Seraj, Exxalt, Taj Raheem, AJ Radman, Soul Of Marwan AS, Om El Benicio, Rhan Al Shahania, and Royal Asad, all siring medal winners in the Yearling and Junior Supreme Championships. Amongst the Senior Championships, international sires Emerald J, Exxalt, Om El Sinon and Kavalle MI, as well as the late sires Versace and Esparto, added further prestige to their siring records with medal winners, and several of the highest scores of the show awarded. Of the six Supreme Gold Champions freshly crowned at the ABWC 2023, three were bred overseas – Gold Champion Junior Colt Farouk Palazzotto (bred in Italy by Paolo and Susy Capecci), Gold Champion Senior Stallion Emir Sahara (bred in Brazil by Haras Sahara) and Gold Champion Senior Mare Perfinka (bred in Poland by Białka Stud) - once again affirming the global clout and international prestige of the show that was always intended to attract horses from every continent and increase connection, collaboration and camaraderie amongst our worldwide community.

The event’s highest scoring entry was also its oldest – the 12-year-old international superstar Perfinka – who not only took home the coveted trophy of High Scoring horse for owners Al Rajhiat Stud, Saudi Arabia, but High Score honours for both Type as well as Neck & Shoulder. Not only did Perfinka make history by becoming the oldest World Cup Supreme Gold Champion ever crowned, she is also the only horse ever to be honoured twice with the same title, earning the last ABWC Senior Gold Champion Mare in Las Vegas. Of the 15 mares to have thus far been honoured as ABWC Supreme Gold Champion, all but two have been bred by foreign breeders, an impressive statistic that further substantiates the World Cup as North America’s pioneering international event.

From the very beginning, celebrating breeders has been a priority at the World Cup. The highly coveted Breeders Cup is undeniably a highlight of the event, with Top Five honours awarded to those breeders whose horses achieve the greatest success each year. Former Breeders Cup winner Psynergy Enterprise Developments finished in runnerup position in 2023, just ahead of aspiring breeders Orrion Farms and Stella Bella Arabians, and established industry icon PCF Arabians. Emerging victorious for the first time was Royal Arabians, for owners Cindy McGown and Mark Davis, an undeniably well-deserved recognition for the exceptional depth of quality of the Royal Team that bolstered every division at the event.

The celebratory breeder-centric focus of the Scottsdale-based World Cups over the past three years has been refreshing, engaging and intimate, an unexpectedly inspiring and transformative departure from the grander, glitzier events in Las Vegas. We have learned, from this pandemic-induced change of venue, that the World Cup can perhaps be its very best when it embraces all its most rewarding inherent attributes – celebrating breeders, showcasing the Arabian horse on the elite global stage, and bringing together the worldwide Arabian community while consistently invigorating the industry with that special World Cup energy, innovation and appeal. Whatever the future holds for the Arabian Breeders World Cup in 2024 and beyond, rest assured the event will remain at the vanguard under the ambitious yet responsible stewardship of the Arabian Horse Breeders Alliance.
