Bob Dylan once said, “There is nothing so stable as change.” It is a sentiment that rings especially true for Murray and Shirley Popplewell’s Rae-Dawn Arabians, as they embrace the future under the guidance of new manager/ trainer Alcides Rodrigues. Alcides and his wife Margaux—herself a world-class horsewoman—are the newest members of the Rae-Dawn team. Alcides has over a dozen years’ experience competing and winning at the highest levels, achieving many national championships. He is also a gifted mentor who has guided many amateurs to national titles. Alcides brings with him a wisdom and work ethic that Murray deeply appreciates.

“It’s a whole new era here at Rae-Dawn,” Murray avers. “Alcides wants to take a targeted approach to showing based on what he’s learned about the industry, judging and competing. Instead of a taking a barnful of horses, we are selecting the best individuals for each show.” It’s a strategy that is already paying off handsomely. At the 2019 Region 8 Championships in Denver, Alcides’ expertise was on full display when he showed three Rae-Dawn homebreds—all out of Bey Ambition daughters—to regional honors.

RD Momentum, a son of RD Magic Moments and the exceptional sire Emerald J, claimed the title of Region 8 Reserve Champion Stallion. Alcides also led RD Marcelina, a QR Marc daughter out of RD Siena Serenade, to her Reserve Champion Yearling Filly win. Meanwhile, in the Region 8 pre-show, Murray Popplewell confidently showed PCF Crystal Vision (PCF Vision x MCA Afire Beylee, by Afire Bey V), to the championship for 2-year-old and older mares, her tune-up for Canada. Bred by Sam Peacemaker, PCF Crystal Vision and Murray had already won 2019 Scottsdale Champion Mare AOTH honors in February.

Murray isn’t shy about sharing his opinion that the Canadian Nationals is the best title show on the continent. “It’s such a complete show,” he says with enthusiasm. “There’s a great atmosphere of unity—it’s fun to have halter and performance, junior riders, and sport horses all together. It’s always fun to win, but it’s also fun if you get beat by a really good horse. This year’s halter competition was amazing; the classes were deep with beautiful horses.”

It was a spectacular show for Rae-Dawn, with all six horses finishing in the top ten. RD Marcelina was Canadian National Top Ten ABS Yearling Filly, finishing third in the final; RD Bandero (RD Capriotti x RD Annabelle Lee) was Top Ten ABS Yearling Colt; Alcides also showed RD Marzella (QR Marc x Jazella FA) to the Top Ten Futurity Filly award and RD Naimar (RD Dynamo x SB Marina) to the title of Canadian National Top Ten Futurity Gelding. And then there was PCF Crystal Vision.

Shown to perfection by Alcides, PCF Crystal Vision dazzled in the open mare competition, capturing the title of Canadian National Reserve Champion Mare. And in a testament to the Rae-Dawn program, her homebred Shanghai EA daughter RD Quianna was named 2019 Canadian National Reserve Champion Jackpot Two-Year-Old Filly! It was a rare mother/daughter moment. To top it all, Murray and PCF Crystal Vision teamed up to bring home the Canadian National Champion Mare AOTH trophy.

Next on the horizon for Rae-Dawn Arabians is the U.S. National Championships. They plan to show two outstanding geldings, RD Exxano (Exxalt x RD Ambianna) and RD Naimar, in Yearling and Futurity Geldings respectively. And according to Murray, RD Marcelina “will be on her A game” for the yearling filly championship. But it’s safe to say the most exciting class for Rae-Dawn will be Giana Leah PCF’s return to the national stage as a 2-year-old. Another product of Sam Peacemaker breeding, Giana Leah is the undefeated, unanimous 2018 U.S. National Champion Yearling Filly and 2018 Scottsdale Junior Champion Filly. She is sure to draw a crowd.

“It’s always nerve-wracking to send out an undefeated horse, but we’re excited!” Murray enthuses. “We want people to see what we have.”

AHA’s tradition of visiting breeders and owners throughout the country met with 70 Arabian horse aficionados who attended the event, enjoying 24-hour smoked brisket and a thrilling horse presentation MC’d by Orrion Farms’ Chris Petford, including the iconic U.S. and Australian National Champion Ghazala el Jamaal, JFN Captive Love, Estelle Di Enzo and Freyja Di Shanghai, as well as their beautiful 2-year-old filly Stella Rosa, sired by their partnership stallion, Enotri EEA. Fabulous food and wonderful conversation with local breeders were punctuated with a beautiful summer day. The Commission discussed a wide range of topics, from breed statistics and trends, to ideas of how to introduce new people to the Arabian breed. As is always the case at the forums, new ideas and perspectives come forward and create great thoughtprovoking dialogue. n

Each competitor contributes $500 to a prize money jackpot.

A horse must be enrolled in-utero as a Breeding Entry and meet enrollment requirements. The AHA In-Utero Foal Application must be postmarked/transaction dated by December 31 of the year the mare is bred. The enrollment fee for a Breeding Entry is $400. As a Breeding Entry, the horse is eligible to earn Sweepstakes Prize Money in Sweepstakes designated classes for the life of the horse.

The individual(s) who enrolls the foal as a Breeding Entry is the Breeder/ Nominator. The Breeder/Nominator will receive 10% of all allocated prize money earned by that entry at the Regional and National Events provided all Sweepstakes requirements are met. Breeder/Nominator payback is for the lifetime of the horse. The Breeder/Nominator does not have to be the recorded owner of the mare. Current AHA membership is required in order to receive prize money.

There are several Sweepstakes designated classes at U.S. Nationals. Horses that are enrolled as a Breeding Entry or Original Entry in these classes are eligible to receive Sweepstakes prize money.

The ABS Yearling Sweepstakes Classes are restricted to horses enrolled as Breeding Entries. The ABS Jackpot Classes are restricted to horses that are enrolled as either a Breeding Entry or Original Entry in the Arabian Breeders Sweepstakes Program. Only those who participate in the Sweepstakes Program by enrolling their horses into the program are eligible to receive prize money.

The Mystery Of QR CODES ...

What Are QR Codes?

They come to us from Japan where they are very common. QR is short for “Quick Response” (they can be read quickly by a cell phone). They are used to take a piece of information from a transitory media and put it into your cell phone. You may see QR Codes in magazine adverts, on billboards, a web page or even on someone’s t-shirt. When the code is scanned, it gives you details about a business, a link to videos, websites or coupons that can be used at stores.

Where Do You Get A QR Code Reader?

First you need to have a smartphone or a tablet equipped with a camera. Next you will need to download an app for your phone/tablet to be able to scan the QR Codes. QR Code Reader can be found in the App Store or by searching for QR Code Readers online; there are several to choose from.

How Do You Scan A QR Code?

Once you have the QR Code Reader app on your phone/tablet, it’s easy! You open the app and hold the phone/tablet above the QR code so that it’s clearly visible within your screen. Two things can happen: it will automatically scan the code, or with some readers, you have to press a button to snap a picture of it. It will then read the code and take you to a website, video, coupon, etc.

How Can You Use A QR Code?

QR codes can be used in a number of ways. You can use them for your farm, stallion(s) or business, no matter how small or large. They can link to your Farm’s website, your stallion’s show record, video or link to promotional photos; or a business can link popular products and how to purchase them. QR Codes can be added to print advertising, stallion cards, flyers, event invites, business cards, etc.

When you first started breeding, what were your goals? How have they evolved over the years? To produce not only talented and athletic babies, but beautiful ones as well. Goals have pretty much remained the same.

In your opinion, what are some motivating factors that incentivize breeders? What are some things that can be discouraging? Of course, to always have babies that you can sell.

The market sometimes can be very discouraging. You have to be tough to be a breeder. My babies are always a reflection of the decisions that I make and are therefore part of me.

Who would you consider your most prized broodmare and/or stallion? And what can you always count on them to consistently produce?

What advice would you give someone looking to breed for the first time? Breed with the knowledge that you’re not always going to get what you want, and to know your pedigrees, but also look at what you’re breeding.

Years as a breeder… 20. I have been blessed with many championships, including regional and national titles in multiple countries by horses I owned, bred or are by my program.

How many foals do you produce a year? I produce one to three foals a year. I prefer to keep my numbers low and only breed with the very best from the exceptional mare, Ghazala El Jamaal. I have been very selective with regard to stallions and this has been a factor for my success over the years.

When you first started breeding, what were your goals? How have they evolved over the years? Originally, I was involved in trail riding, endurance and Australian hack shows with Crabbets.

Those pursuits drove me toward a saddle type Arabian. Two beautiful children later and less time in the saddle, I became drawn to the halter scene. My first serious halter type purchase was Ghazala El Jamaal.

In your opinion, what are some motivating factors that incentivize breeders? What are some things that can be discouraging? What motivates me is seeing people enjoy Arabians I have bred. The money programs are rewarding for breeders if success is achieved and I always enjoy watching the amateurs show. What’s discouraging is if, in my opinion, the best horse doesn’t win, but then the best horse is, of course, only my opinion.

Who would you consider your most prized broodmare and/or stallion? And what can you always count on them to consistently produce? U.S. and Australian National Champion, Ghazala El Jamaal (by Marwan Al Shaqab) put me on the map as a successful breeder. Every foal has been extreme, beautiful, functional and correct. I never needed another mare because she produced super stars for me. I was very fortunate she came into my life.

What was your first big break as a breeder? Winning Australian National Champion with Ghazala El Jamaal. When trainer Michelle Thomas walked Ghazala to the warm-up arena, and everyone’s eyes in the stadium turned to look at her with admiration, I knew that was my turning point. Her progeny have had the same impact!

Where do you see your breeding program 10 years from now? I see myself keeping it small because the demand has changed over the years and I will continue to breed only the highest quality.

What advice would you give someone looking to breed for the first time? First take the time to talk to breeders and agents around the world. Quality, not quantity, is my rule. Buy the absolute best mare you can afford. Look at the most successful breeders; in most cases they have one mare producing the stars. Stallions can only do so much; the mare must be exceptional.

Who would you consider your most prized broodmare and/or stallion? And what can you always count on them to consistently produce? My QR Marc daughter for her quality foals.

Where do you see your breeding program 10 years from now? I am out of the breeding business except for my 3-year-old stallion, Harirys Nicolo, sired by Marwan Al Shaqab and out of my QR Marc daughter.

What advice would you give someone looking to breed for the first time? Choose a top quality stallion with bloodlines that will cross with your mare.

Years as a breeder‌ I started showing horses at the age of two and showed at my first Arabian nationals at 13. For the next four decades I showed and bred horses of various breeds. About seven years ago, I returned to studying Arabian pedigrees and had my first Arabian foal in 2017.

How many foals do you produce a year? 3 to 4.

When you first started breeding, what were your goals? How have they evolved over the years? As a breeder, I strive to breed horses that stand out in the show ring, not only from their conformation, but their presence in the show ring. I believe strongly in the power of the dam line to create lasting genetics across generations.

In your opinion, what are some motivating factors that incentivize breeders? What are some things that can be discouraging? The discovery of the dominant traits in the bloodlines that come through the crosses is what keeps me studying and trying new combinations. Having that foal cross that is the best of both the sire and dam makes up for the challenges in getting the embryo and the vet bills one can incur.

Through my research and observation, I had decided I wanted a Valentino daughter in my program. I went through the studbook and contacted owners of non-exported bay and grey mares looking for the best available. I think I found her; thanks PCF! What was your first big break as a breeder? Maria’s first foal for me, Garavani AN, was Unanimous Region VII Champion with David Boggs.

Where do you see your breeding program 10 years from now? I hope to build upon the Valentino lines and the beauty and elegance across the breed.

Why? WestWorld in Scottsdale, AZ. Arizona has enough variety to keep every member of the family happy while you are visiting, with lots of things to do, perfect weather and also has some of the top trainers in the country, making it easier to visit and spend quality time with friends and horses.

What are your personal pros and cons of judging on a selected panel specific to divisions/classes vs. judging a typical class A show where you’re judging all divisions/classes? A positive when judging on a selected panel would be that you only have to study one division, compared to judging all divisions in a class A show, where you need to refresh your knowledge pertaining to all classes. Through my experience, I tend to like division specific panels. I feel that this provides the exhibitors with a very well-educated opinion.

What small detail(s) do you feel are often overlooked to complete the overall presentation of a horse and rider/handler? The most commonly overlooked detail in presentation would be basic grooming and mental preparation for the task at hand.

As a judge, what is something that you always appreciate seeing? What is your biggest pet peeve? Something that I appreciate seeing would be a well-trained team

of horse and rider. I think it best displays our breed when the ability of the rider matches the horse. In contrast, when riders fail to move to the line when the judge has called for line up, would be a pet peeve of mine.

How do you respond when people accuse/assume the outcome of a class was political? I used to have that opinion at times when competing. After judging for as long as I have now, however, I do not believe that I have been a part of a judging panel that made calls based

on politics. In fact, I would argue that riders that are known well, are held to a higher standard.

What advice would you give to someone considering pursuing getting their judges card? Be prepared for both the physical and mental requirements for judging. You are standing for long periods of time and making decisions repeatedly, for days. This can be taxing on your body and mind after a while.

a lot of time, work and money to be competitive at this level, and any pressure needs to be left outside of the show pen. I like a professional and polished presentation on a horse that is bright and interested.

As a judge, what is something that you always appreciate seeing?

What is your biggest pet peeve? My biggest pet peeves are riders who constantly poke their horses with their spurs or jerk and bump on their faces. Riding and showing should not be an adversarial relationship, and when either the horse or rider are stiff, it ruins the picture. I like to see a rider acknowledge and appreciate their horse. The partnership between a rider and his horse is a beautiful thing to witness. I want to see a soft presentation and communication between the two.

When you are judging on a panel that is specific to a division, you can concentrate on those few classes and hone your eye to their specifics. In a typical Class A show, you have to be a “jack of all trades” and, while it is fun and interesting, I do like the opportunity to be an expert in this limited area and for my pre-show prep to be concentrated to a select few classes.

What small detail(s) do you feel are often overlooked to complete the overall presentation of a horse and rider/handler? Attitude is very important to me in both the rider/handler and the horse. I want to believe that both of them are having fun and enjoying their job. It takes

While I’ve seen some placings that I may have questioned, the view down on the floor is often very different from the stands, and we need to give the judges credit for trying to do the right thing. Every judge that I’ve had the pleasure of working with has been a knowledgeable horseman/woman.

I haven’t always agreed with them, but I do respect their ability and their desire to do the right thing. We have to always remember that judging is a subjective thing. One of the reasons I like the classes with scorecards is it takes a bit of that subjectivity away and breaks the pattern, course or horse up into smaller parts and, when totaled, gives you the outcome for the class. We do that for the rail classes too, but the tally is more in your head or your notes.

What advice would you give to someone considering pursuing getting their judges card? Judging has been an extremely rewarding part of my life. On one hand, I wish I had started doing it earlier, but, on the other hand, I think I am a better judge now than I would have been much younger. I would encourage anyone who thinks they might like to pursue getting their card, not to wait and to head down that path immediately. They need to judge on a local level as much as they can to develop a note-keeping system and to see if they have the right temperament and skillset, before they move up to the expense of the judges’ school and the learner judge level. Judging is a serious responsibility and you need the skillset to make decisions, be organized and do your homework.

What are your personal pros and cons of judging on a selected panel specific to divisions/classes vs. judging a typical class A show where you’re judging all divisions/classes? I find it an honor and privilege to be chosen to judge at the U.S. Nationals in the trail division. The working western disciplines have gained popularity in recent years, with good reason. Riders are enjoying competing in divisions that are fun and show versatility of their horses, while being scored so they know how they can improve.

Class A competitions are great steppingstones to the National level—everyone has to start somewhere! At this level, it is very exciting to see the best of the best. Being able to adjudicate the Arabian horse in its versatility at any level is an awesome job to have.

What small detail(s) do you feel are often overlooked to complete the overall presentation of a horse and rider/handler?

There are many things a horse/rider team have to work through with each opportunity to show. The more ring time they get as a team, the more harmony develops. This is most evident in classes with individual runs. My biggest piece of advice is to take a deep breath and take your time. Deliberate, smooth movements can raise the degree of difficulty, and when executed well, raise your overall scores.

As a judge, what is something that you always appreciate seeing? What is your biggest pet peeve? I truly appreciate a well-schooled team. A deliberate, focused and unhurried performance is a pleasure to watch. I prefer when riders work together with their horse and enable their willingness to perform and ride what is there, rather than overriding their horse beyond its capabilities that day.

How do you respond when people accuse/assume the outcome of a class was political? I am confident in my decisions that the best horse always wins. While some decisions may seem political, I have faith in the training, integrity and impartiality of our licensed officials.

What advice would you give to someone considering pursuing getting their judges card? My advice to upcoming judging applicants is to make sure you are committed to the task.

While the process may be frustrating at times, it is fulfilling once attained, and is a critical component of showing our amazing horses.

CHANGES FOR 2019 ...

For this year’s classes, we will have three judges in the arena and two judges outside in the stands during the rail portion of the class. All five judges will be in the arena for the stand-up in the Finals. This allows the judges to evaluate the class from all perspectives.

Although not new, it is important to recognize that the Limited Open awards and prize money will be offered again this year. This was added last year, and we believe it to be essential to continue broadening participation in the Futurity classes.

PRIZE MONEY PAYOUTS ...

The AWPA will pay out over $150,000 for the fourth year in a row; an absolutely fantastic amount for those 4-year-olds participating.

ARABIAN FUTURITY: Champion: $30,000 Reserve: $15,000 Remaining Top Ten: $9,500 - $5,000 Also, the Arabian Breeders Sweepstakes awards $5,000 to the breeder/nominator of the Champion if the horse is enrolled as a breeding entry in the program.

In addition, the APAHA provides $3,000 to be given to three random entries in the Finals.

HALF-ARABIAN FUTURITY: Champion: $15,000 Reserve: $7,500 Remaining Top Ten: $4,750 - $2,500 Also, the Arabian Breeders Sweepstakes awards $3,500 to the breeder/nominator of the Champion horse if they are enrolled as a breeding entry in the program.

I can’t wait for the AHPA classes, since my trainer and I each have a horse involved; my Half-Arabian and her personally owned purebred. I am also excited to hopefully have some sun—the end of October here in Michigan can be gloomy! And the best thing of all, is seeing my riding buddies from all over the country!

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? I would love to go back in time and tell my 14-year-old self to enjoy those after school rides on my $200 horse just a little more, and to take more of those rides through the cornfields and woods—enjoy being more carefree!

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? My trainer, Alex Peterson, has the most incredible ability of hearing what each horse is trying to tell her; she has an innate sense of what they need. She allows each horse to have their own schedule for growing up, not a human timetable. We end up with well trained, happy and safe horses that love their jobs.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? I would absolutely invite them to either come to a show, or if local and in my vicinity, I would definitely have them come out to our barn and scratch some pretty awesome noses!

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

Usually the most surprising thing about me is that my husband and I have a total of 10 kids between us, and five grandchildren with a new grandson coming in November!

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? Sally Randle is a top-notch hunter trainer who communicates her knowledge with integrity and kindness.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? Arabians are such a versatile breed, from western pleasure to park—they are truly amazing.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

My true love is jumping.

What are three things you are most excited for or love most about U.S. Nationals? Riding through the in-gate to collect a top ten ribbon, maybe even roses, after ... I ride through the in-gate to compete in the Finals, enjoying the thrill of the ride on a great horse, after ... I ride through the in-gate for a practice session with 20 other great horses and all the sounds!

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? Ron Copple trained Caliente Virtuoso for us when he was a 3-year-old. “Cal” loved Ron so much that he would nicker to him when he dismounted and have side conversations. Cal didn’t want Ron to forget they were still working. That communication is the bond with really special horses—I can still picture it.

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? Justin inspires his horses to be more than they’ve ever dreamed of being when he’s showing them, and it doesn’t look like he’s trying; it simply appears that the horse just wants to demonstrate to Justin how much they really want to do it for him.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? Bringing newcomers to the barn on Saturday is so fun, when the amateurs are practicing, and Justin is riding new horses; it’s great camaraderie and the horses are so beautiful!

What is something people would be surprised to know about you? I entered a 3/4-mile match race at a horse show in Muncie, Indiana when I was 15 years old with my H/A mare ... what exhilaration it was! And never again!

# of horses competing at U.S. Nationals... one, Apollo De Valentino What are three things you are most excited for or love most about U.S. Nationals? The Arabian community is one big extended family.

It is an excellent opportunity to reconnect with those relationships and also have a chance to meet new friends. It is also the last BIG event of the year, so the atmosphere is filled with a lot good energy, and everyone is in celebration mode. It is just fun and represents the best of the best in our Arabian industry. It is an excellent opportunity to view some fantastic horses. I enjoy watching the trainers working their horses, the diversity of all the different disciplines being exhibited and supporting Team Midwest.

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? Definitely, winning Scottsdale Unanimous Champion with “Apollo,” is a moment that was beyond exceptional, and a moment that would be nice to recreate at this Nationals!

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? Midwest Training Centre has built the best team in the world. Being a fourth-generation horseman, David Boggs has been at the top of his game, and that of his company, for decades. This is a level of experience that truly stands out. I have a great appreciation for the professionalism that is exhibited both on and off the showgrounds.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? Being a board member of AHAA, I know there are many resources available to nurture someone getting involved with the Arabian horse. The horses themselves speak volumes; it is easy to fall in love with them.

I would also encourage them to attend the Scottsdale show in February. The activities offered makes it evident that the Arabian horse can be fun for the whole family.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

Oh boy, I guess that I am not from Arizona or even a West Coast native. I grew up in the state of Connecticut and graduated from the University there. Sabrina and I moved out West in 1993.

What are three things you are most excited for or love most about U.S. Nationals? The three horses I am bringing. They are the first three that Lisa and I picked out as promising hunter pleasure prospects and I am very excited to watch them all on the big stage!

What are three things you are most excited for or love most about U.S. Nationals? I love the competition, the intensity and the vibe at U.S. Nationals. The quality of horses is amazing and it’s so nice watching classes.

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? Adaptability and patience.

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? Winning my first ever nationals in 2011. It is a moment I’ll never forget, sitting there with no stirrups, having no idea I had just won and the announcer had to repeat my horse’s name twice before I knew what was going on.

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? Their hard work and dedication to the animals.

They both have so much love and compassion for the horses.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? I would tell them about the Arabian community and show them how supportive they are.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you? I am a competitive curler and have competed at two national championships representing team Ontario.

What are three things you are most excited for or love most about U.S. Nationals? I can’t get enough of seeing all the beautiful and well cared for Arabians. I also enjoy reconnecting with some of the amateur riders, and since I sew, enjoy checking out all the western show clothes.

If you could relive one horse related moment, what would it be and why? Six years ago, at my first U.S. Nationals. I had the honor of riding an awesome Arabian named Vikktor, by Versace, who has since passed away. It’s a tie with last year’s Nationals when Lisa Powell rode PA Lacolline to a reserve championship in western side saddle.

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? Zac and Lisa Powell have the unique ability to make you feel important and capable, even when things don’t seem to be going well. I always come away from lessons and shows feeling better than when I arrived, and I can’t wait to do better next time.

When you are 75, this is very important.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you? I’ve only ridden a horse twice in my life.

If someone approached you and was curious to know more about the Arabian horse, what would you say or do to encourage them to get involved? I would first talk a little bit about my personal experiences with the Arabian horse. Then I would encourage them to use their computer, phone, or whatever, to do some research.

I always invite people to my farm to interact with the horses first-hand, and I also have invited them to observe some lessons with Zac and Lisa Powell.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

I design and sew all my western show clothes, and never repeat during the show season with either my purebred or Half-Arabian.

Winning your first national championship is a feeling you never forget! Watching our daughter win a youth national championship was pretty hard to replace. Then watching her run Pistal out for his last debut in Ford Arena was breathtaking!

What’s one asset that your trainer has that you feel sets them apart from others? He works hard, morning to night, seven days a week, trying to promote the Arabian horse. It is his passion as well as his career, but we believe the passion is greater than it just being a job. Our trainer maintains a personal relationship with each client, frequently visiting each farm and caring.

Walk through the aisles, and ask questions from performance and halter owners, breeders, and trainers. Educate yourself with the breed, the pedigrees. The more you know, the more you’ll enjoy them.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

Not sure; Steve and I are kind of an open book. What you see is what you get. We work hard, have a strong, large family, and love our animals, from the horses and the cows, to the cats and dogs.

t would have been understandable if the Canadian Nationals, held August 11-17, 2019, at the Keystone Centre in Brandon, Manitoba, had been a little down in numbers and spirit this year. In July, just weeks before the show, the Canadian border had been closed to horses who had been in Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Wyoming, and Oklahoma, due to their possible exposure to the infectious Vesicular Stomatitis Virus (Canada hasn’t suffered an outbreak of VSV since the late 1940s). One-hundred-thirty-eight entries had to cancel their attendance, including many who were planning to come after Youth Nationals. Because Canada is known as a family show—one where there are championships for both adult and youth exhibitors—that was a significant development.

The Canadian Nationals, however, took the hit and rose above it. The show attracts a loyal following, perhaps for its consistently high-level competition and certainly for its relaxed, friendly atmosphere. This year, nearly 700 horses were on hand (pretty much a routine number; prior to the VSV prohibitions, the show was on track for welcoming a record number of contenders). They came with approximately 2,000 people and used 1,280 stalls. Through the week, show management heard from United States exhibitors who expressed their disappointment at not being in Brandon. Next year, they said, “See you then.”

Despite many highly competitive classes with strong numbers, there was a silver lining in that cloud, Vice Chair of the Show Committee Allan Ehrlick observes. “Some really nice horses and riders were able to win national championships that sometimes don’t, and that’s not to say that Ar abian Horse Times | 144 | Volume 50, No. 5A A

they aren’t deserving; they are very good. But the competition can be fierce, and maybe this year, with some of the entries unable to come, it lightened up a bit for them.”

There are plenty of reliable features about the Canadian Nationals.

One is its show committee—Chairman Gerald McDonald, Allan Ehrlick, Tony Caughell, Dave Daugherty, and Mark Himmel—most of whom have worked together in this capacity for 25 years or more and can practically finish each other’s sentences. They know how to put on a horse show and are invariably exhibitor-friendly (“we know going to a horse show is not inexpensive,” one says, respectful of those who have made the effort to be there). While any show has minor glitches, whatever snafus happen at the Canadian Nationals are rarely noticeable. Loyal to the Arabian horse and the show, they also are loyal to each other. Every year, Ehrlick, a former Olympian, competes for a national title, and every year, committee members who are not on duty elsewhere are on the rail to watch him. He has won a class at a recognized, licensed show every year since 1963, many in Arabians, and this year added his 112th national championship or reserve.

There is also the quality of the horses: many of them go on to U.S. National titles two months later, and plenty of great horses have served notice of their potential by winning their first national championship north of the border. Such names as Gai Parada (1974, pleasure driving), *Padron (halter, 1981), MHR Nobility (park, 1988), C A Hermoso (western, 1998) and many more are part of history—as are some matchless memories. Oldtimers still recall Vancouver 1979, when announcer Harry Cooper, watching the *Bask daughter Ambra leave the ring after winning the park championship, quietly said, “Goodbye, *Bask.” It was the first the Arabian community had heard that the great stallion had died and the news reverberated through the arena.

It is sometimes overlooked that the Canadian Nationals is the oldest national championship show in North America’s modern history. The first competitions that would grow to be today’s event were held in Calgary in 1957, one year before the Estes Park classes that would evolve into the U.S. Nationals. It’s had a roster of homes over the years, including, after Calgary, Vancouver, Edmonton, Toronto and Regina. Now in its ninth year at Brandon, it is best known for its congenial ambiance and the sense that despite its knockout competition, it is still based on a grassroots, from-the-heart love of the Arabian horse.

Additionally, classes in Canada are quite competitive so you can evaluate how you’re doing in your respective divisions before you make the commitment to compete at U.S. Nationals. We always find Canadian Nationals to have more of a laid-back vibe than U.S. and it’s lots of fun!

ary Kehl’s GRK Farms may be a relatively new operation in terms of historic legacies in the Arabian horse industry, but it certainly is no secret. Gary has gone to great lengths to share his vision of a beautiful and athletic Arabian horse, and his entire family’s passion for Arabian horses, with everyone.

Following a tremendously successful 2019 Canadian Nationals, the Kehl family has even more to celebrate and share.

Granddaughters Chloe and McKienna dominated both performance and halter classes, winning four championships, a reserve, and numerous top tens with four horses bred, foaled, raised and trained exclusively by GRK Farms. Chloe rode perennial champion, Billie the Kid GRK (Sundance Kid V x Just To Fool You (APHA)) to victory in both Half-Arabian Western Pleasure JOTR 14-17, and Half Arabian Western Pleasure JTR Elite, titles they had captured at the 2018 Youth National Championship show. At Canada, Chloe and Billie took their partnership into the Showmanship arena and captured a championship there as well. Not to rest on her laurels with just Billie, Chloe also rode Cache GRK (Thats Amore GRK x Lady Justify GRK), to an Arabian Western Pleasure JTR Elite championship win. Just five, and showing at his last show in a bosal, GRK performance trainer Priscilla Cluff was elated by Chloe’s success with Cache.

cKienna Kehl was also a force to be reckoned with in the Showmanship 13 & Under division. She showed Saturday Nite Afire (Baske Afire x CS Nite Fever) to a Canadian National reserve championship title, and they also earned top tens in Half-Arabian Country English Pleasure. Elizabeth DeSarle heads up the English and hunter performance training at GRK, and also helped McKienna to top tens in hunter pleasure with Lady Justify GRK ( Justify x Fortessa MCF). Because she has also already developed a passion for halter horses–that she shares with her Grandpa Gary–McKienna elegantly presented Stivalle GRK (Stival x Magnum Sofistica GRK) to a top ten in In-Hand Geldings at Canada, which followed big halter wins for the young exhibitor earlier in the year. At Region 8, McKienna won championships in the Colorado Arabian Breeders Association Futurity classes showing two horses sired by Kanz Albidayer (Ajman Moniscione x DL Marielle), Kanquest GRK (x Angellinah WLF) and Kanzianna GRK (x OFW Rihanna).

riscilla Cluff has headed up GRK Farm’s performance program since Gary started in 2003. She grew up riding Arabians and started showing at 4-H shows in Washington State. As she became more competitive, showing in multiple disciplines at the regional level, she caught Gary’s attention. Gary Kehl has always sought out the best education, guidance and expertise from talented professionals across the industry, and in looking for a performance trainer for GRK Farms, Priscilla was the right fit. While they say “the rest is history,” Priscilla has continued to build on her natural talent and horsemanship skills, and brings an incredible level of professionalism to the table with the GRK horses and clients. This year, however, she had the pleasure of watching her own daughter, Bianca, win her first set of national championship roses in the Western Pleasure Walk/Jog class at Canada. Bianca had a beautiful ride on the black and white pinto mare, Kids N Roses GRK (Sundance Kid V x GK Princess Bar (APHA)), whom Priscilla rode later in the week to a top ten finish in the Half-Arabian Western Pleasure Open.

ary is exceptionally proud of his mare, OFW Rihanna (OFW Magic Wan x *Hafati Julianna), whom he has dubbed the “Queen of GRK,” and who has certainly established herself as the matriarch of the GRK breeding program. Shown in Canada by GRK’s halter trainer, Lucho Guimaraes, to a strong top ten in the Open Mares, her daughter by RFI Farid, Fabrihanna GRK, also earned a top ten in Yearling Fillies.

Bred by Orrion Farms, Gary fell in love with OFW Rihanna years ago and her production capabilities. The Queen is also dam to Everanna GRK (by Ever After NA), who became GRK’s first European sale, thanks to Lucho Guimaraes. Gary has retained OFW Rihanna’s daughter Hafatianna GRK, sired

by Kanz Albidayer, for breeding purposes.

Gary was thrilled with her first foal by World Champion EKS Alihandro, as this colt holds great promise.

I vividly remember watching a stallion halter class in Wendell Arena when WN Ultimate Star entered the ring. I was mesmerized, and from that moment on, all I wanted to do was breed

The main change since then is the complete death spiral in middle-of-the-herd Arabian sales. Simply put, the market for Arabians above $3,000 and below $100,000 has disappeared.

Since we closed the farm last October, I have had a beautiful 9-year-old Marwan al Magnifficoo mare on the market for $3,000.

I’d feel lucky to get $1,000.

A few compounding reasons led us to leave.

First, the complete failure of AHA to attract new enthusiasts. Second, the near total absence of achieving a decent return on investment from breeding. Third, feeling things will not be getting better any time soon.

I fell in love with horses and specifically, Arabians, when I was a very young girl. I was involved for 30+ years, in breeding as well as showing in halter, hunter, western, English and Country Pleasure, native costume and show hack. I served as president of our local club for several years and also produced our club’s Farm Directory for several years.

When I got married, the constant traveling to horse shows, which were far away, was no longer feasible, plus I got tired of the politics in judging, the high expense of show outfits and

When we got fully involved in 2012, we were thrilled and overwhelmed at the newness of it all, meeting all the new people, following their stories and their horses, etc. But for the final two-three years, we watched those same people whom we friended exit the business, and we witnessed the financial struggles of the Pyramid Society in presenting the Egyptian Event. Near the end of our involvement, as much as we “fell in love” with this horse-thing we were doing, we saw the writing on the wall that it was in a state of decline, at least from our limited perspective of straight Egyptian Arabians.

We initially got involved after attending in November 2011, an Egyptian Arabian Seminar at Colthill Crescent Arabians, a straight Egyptian farm about an hour from New Orleans, where we live. Colthill was one of three affiliate farms of Arabians Ltd. I was a horse fanatic growing up, spending lots of time riding, showing and falling in love with them during my teens and twenties. My husband Larry’s only experience was the brief encounter necessary to earn his Boy Scout Horseback

AHA and some members have completely failed to create a welcoming environment.

Is this an elitist sport? At today’s prices, it doesn’t have to be, but spend half an hour eavesdropping on conversations at any horse show, and you’d think we all just dropped in from Downton Abbey.

What we need is a fundamental shift from our all-or-nothing paradigm to a culture that welcomes the rest of the herd. Reduce the number of Regions by half, so local clubs can begin. We need new owners who can be proud of horses who will never win at Nationals, but might place at a local show one day, and will always exhale warm breath from their soft muzzle on the hand of every child who pets them. You can’t put a price on that. high trainer show fees. I wanted to be able to enjoy horses and be competitive on a more local and financially-realistic basis. More fun, less stress.

So, I switched over to NRCHA/AQHA Reined Cow Horse, Ranch Versatility and Team Sorting. There are many more opportunities to ride, compete and enjoy locally. Also, my biggest fashion dilemma is which lovely cotton western shirt with which matching saddle pad … much less pressure!

We didn’t totally leave the industry. We still follow what’s going on, we still visit Lotus Capri, we still communicate and visit with our horse friends. But we don’t breed or show anymore, because the bottom line ... it was not financially feasible any longer. Larry’s 2012 spreadsheet forecast a profit after five years.

Two or three years in, we came to the realization that profit was not foreseeable anytime soon, but we lived on the hope that the business would at least break even and support itself. Soon thereafter, with the birth of our second colt in a row, we realized even that dim hope was out of the question. At that point, we planned our exit strategy.

It is hard to own and promote a stallion and quite costly when you are a small breeding farm. We loved having a few offspring a year and the anticipation of their birth and watching them grow. We have also had several tragedies and losses which certainly take their toll on a small breeding farm. These animals are our family and losing one is very painful. Over the years we have seen class sizes dwindle, the market change, a

The local class A shows were always well attended with full classes, whereas now, local shows are seen more as a way to get to Regionals and then to Nationals. Back then, people went to local shows because they were fun and we enjoyed competing. Shows have lost most of the fun now, in fact, many are almost boring to watch, one- and two- horse classes for hours on end, especially when the quality of horse is often lacking.

Breeder for 10 years in the halter market Primary reason for leaving: Show Ring Politics I moved to LaCabreah in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where Padrons Psyche stood at the time. This was my introduction to Arabian horses. I had had a love of horses since a young age, but this

loss of support between disciplines, a lack of transparency from leadership, a lack of consistency in judging, a middle market that has disappeared and rising costs in everything involved with owning a horse.

All of these things cause small breeding farms to grow weary.

There are NO gelding incentives in our industry, which make colts almost impossible to market or even give away, half of the time. In my opinion, geldings should be the backbone of the industry and promoted to the highest extent for beginners, amateurs, youth and families.

All of these things have ultimately led to our decision to stop breeding. The discourse between disciplines kills the market. We are constantly creating new classes causing shows to take longer and cost more money.

Sweepstakes is constantly changing, which There isn’t one specific reason I can say I have moved away from Arabians; it was more of many issues leading to more and more disenchantment with the industry, and the fact sales are almost nonexistent. Showing has reached the point where it is cost prohibitive for most working-class people. And as an amateur owner/trainer/exhibitor showing and placing at the Regional and National level, is almost impossible.

Aside from the costs of showing, breeding has become a money-losing venture for most.

I have become highly involved in KFPS Friesians in the last several years and while I bought my first mare with the intention of just wanting a pleasure horse to trail ride, the more I learned about the breed, the breeding regulations, the KFPS (the mother registry) and how incredibly welcoming the people are, rekindled my love for them. Despite my reasons for leaving, the time that I spent in the Arabian horse industry remains one of my most joyful and satisfying hobbies.

Three primary things ultimately influenced my decision to leave: 1). Resale Market. Shortly after I purchased my first full Arabian and made the decision to begin breeding, the recession of 2007 hit and the resale market was adversely affected.

is extremely frustrating for those that have invested their hard-earned money into this program. Negativity surrounding halter horses is incredibly frustrating and misunderstood, which in turn has now separated halter into three categories which is unnecessary and could be fixed if judging were more consistent with the breed standard. It makes it very hard, for a breeder considering all these classes and disciplines seem to require a different look when, if we would adhere to the standard of the breed, the goals and market would be consistent. At this point, there is virtually no market for selling horses, and as responsible breeders, we are aware that the 18 horses we own quite likely might be in our care for their lives and it doesn’t make any financial sense to add more to our herd.

the more involved I became. I started breeding and SELLING foals and even served a term on the Board of Directors for the Friesian Horse Association of North America. I found almost everything that had become tarnished within the Arabian industry was the way it needed to be in the Friesian breed. One does not need thousands of dollars’ worth of professional pictures, professional video and magazine ads to sell a horse. Foals have value and do sell, pedigree matters, inbreeding coefficients matter and the inspection results largely determine objective value. Colts, and more importantly geldings, are in high demand.

Since stallions must be approved for breeding, and less than one percent are quality enough to earn approval, most colts are gelded and move onto performance careers. Geldings are the cornerstone to any breed’s success and should be highly valued by the associations, trainers and breeders.

I bred my horses out of love for them and the breed–not as a business, but realistically one has to realize some profits. Unless you are fortunate enough to have an endless supply of resources, it becomes unsustainable financially.

2). Cost. I went through a divorce and though I tried to continue on my own, it became prohibitive financially.

I started the Times for Kids column, was heavily involved with youth competition coverage, and later did a lot of general writing.

Initially, I wanted to go out on my own and step away from the industry and the life I’d always known. In the longer run of things, my decision to not come back to the industry is less a decision than a matter of logistics and cost, and to an extent, desire. I don’t have the time or the funds to be involved, and I’ve found other interests to pursue. I don’t think I can overstate the impact that my involvement with the Arabian horse community has had on me—it was formative and will stay with me for the rest of my life.

Arabian Sport Horse Breeding and Training: 11 Years Primary reason for leaving: No market value in breeding An Arabian stallion named Showgun PGN initially drew me to involvement with the Arabian horse outside my normal training world of open hunter/jumpers. Ultimately, I left for a simple reason: monetary and not enough jumping clients. I miss the Arabian shows but the quality of competition and ever-changing schedule and shows made it impossible to plan and drum-up clients.

My family moved out of Southern California to rural Northeast Washington. The horse industry there, in general, was not anything like I was used to. Everything was so far away! It became a financial strain to attend regional meetings because they were held eight hours away and required hotel and travel expenses, which at the time was a burden. I greatly miss participating, and the feeling of doing something good for the breed.

Breeding from 2004-2019 for both halter & performance Primary reason for leaving: Other I began breeding in 2004. That’s when I met and purchased a young stallion named Mirage V. I thought, “OK, now that I have this magnificent, kind stallion, my job is to give him every chance he can to show his stuff.” That soon transcended the show ring. It certainly hasn’t been for money or fame, but all fueled by the love of this incredible horse. But you get to a point where, all passion aside, it’s stupid to put so much money in it when it is an uphill battle year after year.

I’m lucky with Mirage because he truly is a family horse, even as a stallion. From tiny kids to elderly people with canes, everyone can be around him. He is just so kind and luckily passes that on as well. We have to educate people to truly appreciate the breed for their inherent qualities. In many ways the focus on the show world has corrupted that. I’m always an optimist. It can be done. But I’m not going to be doing it anymore.

Neither Cindy Morgan (of Mt. Pleasant Stallion Station, where Mirage stands at stud) nor am I, doing any more breeding, which is sad because Mirage is just kicking it with these babies. Unfortunately, there is no market for them, and no market for breeding to him.

We need to do a better job in promoting the Arabian as a breed and not just put the money into the high-powered shows. AHA has got to do a better job on the branding of the horse. We’ve let our breed down terribly.

Partner (noun): a person who shares or is associated with another in some action or endeavor.

Mary and Pat Trowbridge are in the truest sense, partners. One would simply not exist without the other, and together they are seamless. They came from backgrounds where hard work was a given and making do with little gave them everything they needed.

They have built a life and a business together from the ground up, slow and steady, never taking anything or anyone for granted, most especially one another.

The business of training horses is not for the faint of heart; it’s a business that defines success by the outcome of 20 minutes in a show ring, with no regard for the countless hours you spent getting there.

It’s a business where there is no “time off.” Horses have the uncanny ability to get sick in the middle of the night or on your day off; no doubt so you can give your full attention to seeing to it personally, that they are nursed back to health.

It’s a business where the owners ride as well; they all show up for lessons on the same day—the weekend no less—and trainers must master a dance that leaves each owner feeling like they are not only your prized student, but they own your favorite horse.

It’s a business where you will drive thousands of miles to attend as many horse shows as humanly possible, ensuring that each horse gets their 20 minutes. Trainers send each horse and rider into the show ring, knowing once they hit the gate, they have no control, and yet their results also define you. But what is most important to the trainer during that 20 minutes is that this will be the ride that they will remember and talk about for years to come.

There are many who have taken on training horses as a business, but for Pat and Mary, it is their life.

Mary has always been the one in the arena, but Pat has always been the one holding the light; an incredible man always at her side, on the rail and at the gate. And from this partnership, it is the Arabian horse industry as a whole that is better, because of Pat and Mary’s devotion and dedication to one another and their commitment to the Arabian horse.

Patrick Trowbridge was born the youngest of nine children (five boys and four girls), to Paul and Helen Trowbridge of Corfu, New York. Paul, Sr. was a World War II Aviation Ordnanceman in the Coast Guard, a pistol marksman and member of VFW Post 9000. He was a farmer and the plant manager for Ward Hydraulics for 37 years. Helen attended Buffalo General School of Nursing, and after 17 years, retired as the head of Nursing at the Erie County Home.

Paul and Helen were hands-on parents and instilled in each of their nine children a strong work ethic and good sense of humor. Purchasing their first Angus cow in 1957, Paul, Sr. couldn’t possibly know what impact their cattle business would end upa having on the lives of his children. For Pat, it led him to attend Alfred Ag Tech and from there, went on to manage several major cattle farms, including Fairfield Farms in Connecticut and Cobble Pond Farms in New York. Pat would spend a decade learning everything he would need to know, long before he understood that he and Mary would be one day running one of the premier breeding and training facilities in the country.

It all began for Mary, in Colebrook, a small New Hampshire town, close to the Canadian border. It is here that the deep-rooted qualities of family and community were instilled in Mary, giving her a profound sense of determination and purpose. Mary Jay Harrigan was the youngest of four children, born to Fred and Esther Harrigan. By anyone’s standards, the Harrigans were a family of intellectual high achievers. Frederick J. Harrigan, Mary’s father, was valedictorian of his class at Lisbon High School, he attended Harvard on a scholarship and graduated Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude in Harvard’s Class of 1942. He enlisted in the Navy, during which time he finished his studies and graduated Georgetown Law School and served as a codebreaker with Naval intelligence. Upon leaving the Navy, Fred began to practice law where he handled a diverse array of cases and later was appointed to the bench as a Judge.

Esther B. Harrigan, Mary’s mother, attended school in Bound Brook, N.J., Berlin, N.H., and Hardwick, Vt.; and graduated as salutatorian of Littleton High School. She attended Plymouth State College until 1942. During World War II she was employed in the Registry of George Washington University in Washington, D.C. She served as a member and chairman of the Colebrook School Board and was a member of the Draft Board of Service District No. 8 in Berlin during the Vietnam War. She was a schoolteacher, helping in establishing special education classes in the Colebrook School System.

Fred and Esther Harrigan purchased Colebrook’s weekly newspaper, News and Sentinel, in 1960. Susan, John and Peter were teenagers when their little sister came into the world, and it would be a few short years before the chaos of a large family quieted as Mary’s siblings went off to college and pursued their careers. Journalism became the family business. Mary’s path took a different route, but the gift of writing has been as much a part of Mary’s life as it has her sister and brothers. John has lived his life in New Hampshire and took over the News and Sentinel after his parents retired, and his daughter, Karen, still runs the paper today.

world for a woman to expect to succeed in. Mary never complained; there was no drama, just hard work, talent and the need to keep learning. It was her vision, drive and determination, never appearing the least bit intimidated, that made it clear it wasn’t a matter of if she was going to succeed, but when.

This mother/daughter team was an incredible gift to each, pursuing their own dreams while supporting the other to achieve their own.

Mary had an innate understanding of the impact that a horse could have on a person, especially an Arabian horse. The evolution of this knowledge would become a driving force behind Pat and Mary’s professional and personal life.

Industry Heavyweights

An Arabian Initiation It was the Harrigan’s friend and town doctor, who was responsible for Mary’s introduction to the Arabian horse. Dr. Gifford’s daughter owned a few Arabians and he kept Arabian horse magazines in his waiting room for his patients to enjoy. Mary saw her first Arabian in the pages of a magazine and got her first glimpse into the world that would be her future.

Mary’s first horse was a result of an agreement she struck with her parents.

When she could carry a bucket of water from the house to the barn, they would find her “just the right horse.” She saved her money and went down to the local hardware store and bought the smallest bucket she could find. The story of Mary and Ahab that Arab, aka “Rab”, has been told throughout Mary’s career, when asked how she got her start. He was certainly, “just the right horse”, proof that any horse if given the opportunity, has the ability to fulfill a dream of a horse crazy little kid, even an ornery little gelding with a few decades under his belt. He will forever be the first horse that Mary called her own and the first of a long line of horses that have made Mary the trainer she is today.

There were many people who influenced Mary’s thoughts on training and breeding the Arabian horse, but there was no greater influence than Bill Bohl, the head trainer at Leon and Doris Rubin’s Sir William Farm in New York, and Mary’s first boss. This legendary farm imported the Polish stallions *Sambor and *Etiw.

Mary first caught Bill’s eye at a show in Bangor, Maine, when she was riding Tsahd, the first purebred Arabian she owned. Bill recalls saying to someone during the class, “This girl could really be a good rider.” In 1978 during spring break of Mary’s sophomore year of college, she traveled to Sir William for an apprenticeship. It was Bill who first understood that Mary had a unique contribution to make. He saw in Mary the raw talent of an aspiring young trainer destined for success. Bill also recognized something

Mary’s mother, Esther, didn’t let convention dictate the decisions she made in her life or as a mother. Mary has been quoted as saying she and her mom grew up together. Esther was truly a woman before her time, having a baby in her late thirties and working outside of the home. These were not commonplace in the early 60s, and it would be Esther’s encouragement that gave Mary the confidence to become a trainer. Mary in turn, helped her mother to fulfill her dream of learning to ride and show—Esther was 50 when she entered into the show ring.

Esther’s example of how she lived her life, and her love of horses, inspired Mary not only to become a trainer, but to break the barriers in a world dominated by men. If wearing roses defined success as a trainer, it was a brutal

else in Mary; he saw a young woman with empathy for others and a selfless nature—a testament to Bill’s intuition that he was able to identify these qualities in Mary.

While the apprenticeship typically entailed the standard responsibilities of general horse care and conditioning, for those select few that Bill saw potential in, he gave them the opportunity to break and train a horse of his choosing. Mary was one of those few and was assigned a grey gelding known as “Hot Dog”. It was with calculated consideration and keeping mental notes on his apprentices, that Bill would select how the students and horses would be paired. When asked why he selected Hot Dog for Mary, Bill laughs, “Well, he was sort of a neurotic thing, if you want to know the truth, but she was grateful of any opportunity to train a horse and she’d ride anything.” In typical Mary fashion, she stuck with it and learned (for both her and Hot Dog). After some time and lessons, she took him all the way to the show ring. Hot Dog, also known as SW Atiw, eventually became one of *Etiw’s best English horses.

Bill recalls one of his proudest memories of Mary, “I believe she was on a horse named Sir William Damit, and it was at the New England All Arabian Show when she won her first English pleasure championship. I was so proud of her.” Bob Hart Jr., a close friend and mentor, relayed his memories of that same class as a judge, “I gave her her first championships in English pleasure.”

After all these years, you could feel the pride he felt when he shared, “Mary rode a great class. There were a lot of top trainers in there and she just did a stellar job showing her horse. She’s always been a real talent.”

Bill invested a great deal in Mary; he not only shared his experience of training, but knowledge of breeding. Mary absorbed both, providing her with the platform that has become the cornerstone of her success. Bill instilled upon Mary the value of giving back, paying it forward, and gratitude. He taught her to never take a client for granted, treat them with respect, whether they were coming or going, because you never know when you would see them again.

These are the principles that became the core of Mary’s own mantra and would become the foundation of one of the most successful training facilities in the country.

Mary worked for Bill for eight years, taking a lifetime of insight and understanding. She has never forgotten where she came from and who helped get her there. Bill was no different. “I worked for Mr. Rubin for 15 years,” he says.

“He would always tell me, ‘Bill, you’ve got to do it, you’ve got to just get out there, you have to get seen, and you just have ~ Bill Bohl to keep going.’ That’s something I would always tell Mary too. She’s got determination like nobody. She just keeps doing it, she just keeps going. And that isn’t easy, because you’ll hit a bump in the road and you’ll wonder what in the hell have I done, and then you realize there was a purpose in it and it might not have ~ Tim Shea been the success that you wanted, but you’ve heard the saying, ‘Sometimes failures lead to success,’ and that’s really true. It’s just the way it is.” Bill continues on to say, “You’ve seen what she’s done in her own business and the distress fund. She’s capable of taking the bull by the horns and going with it all the way. They threw the mold away when they made Mary.”

For the things Mary is truly passionate about, she has an insatiable desire to never quit learning. While Mary has a tremendous appreciation for the generations before her and the fundamentals she learned from them, Mary is a progressive and forward thinker. Seeing this eagerness in Mary and a desire to become the best, Bill would send her to other trainers in the country for short periods of time to refine her training methods. One such trainer was Tim Shea, who was a former assistant to Bill at Sir William. Tim would prove to be another important and valuable influence on Mary and her career. Tim remembers, “When Mary went to Sir William, she was determined to make it in the Arabian horse business, and she was going to a player in the industry, which of course, she ended up becoming herself. Mary and I always helped each other out. I learned a lot from her, and she learned a lot from me. We catch showed each other’s horses. If I needed a catch rider, she was my first choice. We’ve been close collaborators and still are.”

There would be many important relationships that Mary would develop during her years in Hillsdale. However, it would be the introduction to a local cattleman in 1979, shortly after Mary began working at Sir William Farm, that would change the course of her future.

Pat and Mary When Mary met the man she was going to spend her life with, there would be little in her life that would remain the same. Patrick Trowbridge and Mary Harrigan were married June 6, 1981. To suggest that Pat has been at Mary’s side throughout, is a huge understatement. When necessary, Pat has been in front of Mary pulling her in the right direction, and at times, behind her, providing the impetus and inspiration required when together they made the big decisions in life. Pat and Mary together have been a singular force. They are the human embodiment of Aristotle’s teaching that “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.”

That day would come, and Mary would finally have that first ribbon in hand, her first top ten. It seemed that albeit slow, Mary was making progress.

Edward “Yogi” McCormick is a dear friend of Pat and Mary’s and has been a confidant to Mary over the years. “Mary couldn’t have done what she has without Pat,” says Yogi. “And Pat is very content to be that guy. Those wheels wouldn’t turn without him and I can guarantee you that.” In an industry that’s almost impossible to take on alone, it’s also probably one of the toughest businesses on a marriage. “They really love each other, which is kind of rare,” Yogi laughs. “Pat is a rarity; he gives Mary plenty of space, but he also sets some guidelines and he works hard too.” Yogi points out, “Training horses is one of the toughest businesses in the world, and if you’re honest, it’s ten times tougher. There’s an integrity and an honor in Pat and Mary that I’m not sure most people understand, but I do.”

grateful for, the clients that believed in her; the encouraging words from others simply telling you you’re doing a good job and nice ride, that would help to sustain her until the next year.

Mary’s career as a trainer began at a time of great enthusiasm, growth, and excitement for the Arabian breed. Training and showing Arabian horses as a vocation was no less arduous then; shows were exciting and fun, and competition was fierce. Cracking the Top Ten at U.S. Nationals required a horse of the highest quality, a trainer of exceptional skill, and months of preparation. In this male dominated environment, there were precious few women competing for national championships, and only a few of those visited the winners circle with any consistency. Watching Mary’s career evolve, it seemed that she was not focused on being a successful woman, but a successful horse trainer.

Things did not come quickly or easily for Mary professionally, however. The 90s were fated to change that, but not before Mary would face devastating losses personally. In 1990, Mary’s mom passed away. She placed Esther’s cutback saddle and a photo of her driving horse on her casket—such a poignant tribute to this beautiful lady, who gave her daughter the priceless gift of support and courage to follow her dreams.

Within a year, Mary would also lose her father. In the weeks following her dad’s passing, Mary and Pat made the decision to go out on their own. It is no coincidence that once Pat took on the role of Mary’s partner professionally, it is as though all the pieces fell into the right place.

In 1991 Mary and Pat founded Trowbridges, LTD. All the hard work they put in independently from one another professionally, helped prepare them for the ride they were about to take.

It requires a special brand of commitment, passion and perseverance to return to U.S. Nationals year after year; aspiring to fulfill one’s personal goal of earning their first national top ten award. There would be eight years, that would come and go without putting up a ribbon. But in true Mary fashion, she focused on the things to be

Bill Bohl said it best, “Of course, at this time in the Arabian world, things are developing and you really don’t notice them until it’s over. Then you look back on some of these things and realize how important they are.”

Mary and Pat’s union professionally was one of those important things. This moment, the promise of what would become reality. The friends that are not yet friends, the clients that are not yet clients, the champions that are not yet champions, those that didn’t know or understand, that one day there would be a crisis, a need, and from this moment, the promise of an answer.

When it all comes together Mary overshot the more conventional, steady ascendance of career growth, although that was the path all young trainers who became successful expected. What made Mary’s eight years in the wilderness important, is what followed. During those lean years, Mary was paying close attention to those at the top of their game.

When a losing streak is broken, a winning streak begins, and for Mary, that winning streak had finally become a constant in her life. When all the dots finally connected for Mary, it happened quickly and she was ready to leap from semi-obscurity to the very pinnacle of success—an overnight sensation, more than 10 years in the making.

Mary’s Park Horse victory in Canada introduced a new personal challenge to contend with; of course, she wanted to follow up her Canadian National Title with a win at the U.S. Nationals. The challenge that Mary had with Red Tape, however, was not simply a function of training and preparation.

There is no question that Red Tape required every bit of knowledge, skill, experience and patience she possessed, but Mary never hesitated to ask for help when she needed it. In 1991 at the U.S. Nationals, she reached out to Tim Shea. Mary had made the cut, but she wasn’t feeling good about their first go.

Tim would be in that same class, but as a testament to their friendship and respect for one another, he was there to help. He remembers the night of the Park Horse final fondly, “Earlier that evening, I won the English Pleasure with Hucklebey Berry.

When we lined up in the Park, I knew she was going to win it. I remember saying to her there, that this was a great moment for the two of us. Bill was judging and I’d won the English and she was going to win the park.”

Mary and Red Tape unanimously won the U.S. National Park Horse Championship. That night they left the arena draped in roses; a win that they would duplicate two years later.

To fully appreciate what Mary accomplished that night at the 1991 U.S. Nationals, this victory must be placed in context.

Consider these dominate “runs” in sports: The New England Patriots won six Super Bowls between 2001 – 2018; the New York Yankees, Five World Series

Among sports fans, these are some of the greatest accomplishments in modern sports.

Now consider this ... Gene LaCroix won the U.S. National Championship in Park 14 times in 16 years.

Gene was the premier Arabian trainer in the Arabian breed from his teenage years and throughout his career. He presided over the business of the Arabian horse while the Arabian breed was growing by leaps and bounds. Throughout these growth years, the most prestigious and competitive performance class was the Arabian Park Horse Championship.

The first *Bask horse Mary ever saw in person was the great park mare, Ambra. Mary was 14, and it was at the New Hampshire All-Arabian Horse Show. Years later, in 1978, Mary would see Ambra again, this time in Louisville with Ray LaCroix in the irons. It was Mary’s first U.S. Nationals and it was a performance that she will never forget. In 1979, Gene LaCroix would win the U.S. National Championship Park title in Albuquerque after winning in Canada.

Twelve years later, the second woman to ever win the park, and riding in her mom’s saddle, Mary would win the U.S. National Champion Park title on a *Bask son. It was truly a dream fulfilled.

Mary had succeeded in winning the most prestigious championship in the world of Arabian performance. For all of Mary’s gregarious nature, it was her gratitude and humility that most will remember in the wave of celebratory emotion which enveloped Mary, Pat and their team. The same optimistic determination that carried Mary through the rocky beginning of her professional career, also carried Mary to success with Red Tape. There were other important successes for Trowbridge clients that year as well. Chief among those was the gifted and beautiful Barbary daughter Silkwood.

Mary and Silkwood finished the year with a U.S. National Top Ten in the inaugural year of Trowbridges, LTD; Mary and Pat setting a lofty standard for themselves.

Connecting the dots Every trainer understands that they are no better than the horses in their barn. Relying upon the lessons learned from working with Bill Bohl, Mary set about looking for a specific kind of horse. She had a highly developed interest in understanding the strengths and limitations of various bloodlines.

Utilizing that knowledge, Mary went about developing her homegrown show string. In time, she found herself consistently mounted on horses that she understood had what it took to win at U.S. Nationals. Many possessed the talent to become stars, but it was up to Mary to develop that potential into reality, and by every measure, she succeeded in fulfilling that duty. Given the great, but raw, talent that these horses possessed, Mary didn’t spend much time worrying if she and her horses would be limited by the social construct commonly known as “the glass ceiling.” Rather, she was focused on fulfilling her own standard of success.

It turns out that Mary’s quest to meet her own definition was more than enough to exceed all expectations, social constructs or limitations. Her optimism and determination, when combined with her understanding of bloodlines and her own talent, provided Mary with a steady stream of national winners.

Another “unknown at the time” important moment for Pat and Mary would be the door that opened to Mike Nichols. What started as a relationship to sell horses to a Broadway and movie producer in the business, ended up being just the opposite.

Pat, Mary, and Mike ended up sharing the same appreciation and IQ for pedigrees. Nichols was solidly back in the game, and it would be his bred mare Firefly NA, that Mary would ride to the championship in the inaugural Arabian English Pleasure Futurity class in 1998.

Winning such a title is never easy; doing so on a 3-year-old in a class where the entries were not allowed to wear a martingale raises the degree of difficulty exponentially. The lack of martingales was not the only notable element of this championship. Among the top ten winners in that class were a future 5-time National Champion Park Horse; a multiple National Champion English Pleasure Horse and numerous other future National and Scottsdale Champions in English Pleasure.

Giving back Pat and Mary’s compassion and commitment to the Arabian horse goes way beyond Trowbridges LTD. They came to understand that there was a need to lend a helping hand within the Arabian community. Their vision was realized in the form of the Arabian Horsemen’s Distress Fund (AHDF). Mary was confident that those who loved the Arabian horse would deliver the support that was needed, and she was right. Established in 2005, the Horsemen’s Distress Fund has given the Arabian horse industry a visible heart. In the past 14 years, the AHDF has collected and distributed over $2,000,000 of aid to its Arabian horse members. The stories of those who have been assisted by the AHDF are compelling, personal and meaningful. It is worth considering how some of those stories might have turned out had it not been for the AHDF and the committee’s efforts to not only come up with creative fundraisers, but to bring all together.

The creation and success of the AHDF would be sufficient enough to place Mary on the short list for canonization within the Arabian community. And for many, creating such a highly successful charity would be enough, but not so for Mary. Recognizing another great need, she started the Arabian Promotional Fund in 2018. The purpose of this program is to create various outreach projects and events to introduce the outside community to the Arabian horse; projects like Envision magazine and Arabian Horses for Humanity. Since the inception of Trowbridges, LTD, public outreach and grassroots development has been at the forefront of Pat and Mary’s program. Having built a blueprint for their own platform, they have seen the impact firsthand of what one can achieve by exposing the Arabian horse and all it has to offer to newcomers.

Mary’s career has paralleled the growth and apex of the Arabian breed’s popularity, but there are many factors which have played a role in the reversal of that popularity.

The most compelling reason for the popularity of the Arabian breed has never faltered or changed: that is the Arabian horse itself. The undeniable beauty and intelligence of the Arabian horse is unchanged. The bond between the horse and its owners, breeders, trainers and grooms is unchanged. The safe, healthy environment that exists at Arabian horse events is constant.

It isn’t important why breed promotion for the past 25 years has failed to express and share these unique and valuable elements; what is, is that the vacuum of leadership that has been the norm is quickly being filled.

Pat and Mary are at the forefront of filling that role of leadership. It is important to understand that their selfless work has nothing to do with any conscious desire to “lead.” It is in their DNA to help those who need help, and to fill the pothole that needs filling. Not because it affects them, but because it needs to be fixed. For all the lending hands they have extended, for all the potholes they have filled, the most important aspect of their work is the example they established for each of us to follow.

The success that Trowbridges LTD has enjoyed during its 28 years, is impressive and serves as the gold standard in the Arabian horse Industry.

Success in the show horse world is always measured by what happens in the ring, but it is defined by how it happens. Pat and Mary have never compromised their ethics, integrity or honesty to achieve their success.

They value their clients and friends as they would family, never taking them for granted. For those fortunate enough to call Pat and Mary friends, they will tell you that you will not meet anyone more giving and generous. They are always willing to help; never expecting anything in return.

They will quickly tell you too, without Pat there would be no Mary, no business, no horses. “Pat is the unsung hero,” Tim Shea shares. “He’s right behind her every step of the way. He’s one of those guys: a carpenter, a mechanic, a vet tech, a truck driver ... he does everything! And he’s a hell of a good ground man; no matter what a horse is doing, he can tell you what they’re doing right and wrong.”

Peter Cameron passed away on September 5th, 2019 at the age of 90.

Pete was employed at TRW and was President of Thompson Products Old Guard 1970-71. He played in many sports but excelled in basketball and fastball and was inducted into the St. Catharines “Athlete” Sports Hall of Fame. He was named #20 of the city’s top 100 athletes in the “Century In Review” publication in 1999, and in 2012, was inducted into Thorold’s Runway of Recognition as a member of the 1948 Holy Rosary Parish junior softball team that won the Ontario Junior “B” championship.

He judged horse shows, ran clinics and made speeches all over North America for 60 years. He was inducted into the Arabian Horse Association Judges Hall of Fame, the Ontario Quarter Horse Hall of Fame, the Arabian Horse Association of Southern California Hall of Fame, and the Can-Am Equine Emporium Walk of Fame. He was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Arabian Professional & Amateur Horse Association and inducted into their Hall of Fame. He received a Life Membership from The Western Horse Association, an Honorary Life Membership from the Arabian Horse Association of Eastern Canada and a “People Make A Difference” Award from the Ontario Equestrian Federation. In 2019, at the end of his judging career, he was honored by the Arabian Horse Association with an annual perpetual “Pete Cameron Award” bronze trophy to be presented each year to an elected judge or steward.

Before his health failed, he enjoyed working around his yard and in 2004, was one of the city’s recipients of a Trillium Award for Civic beautification. He received a Good Will Ambassador Award from the City of St. Catharines in 1988 and a Mayor’s Award of Merit in 1993.

He was an inspiration to many.

Devoted husband of 67 years to Velma and loving father to Kenneth, Peter, Karen and Lori. He will be sadly missed by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Peter’s impact on the Arabian community ...

“You grew up hearing many stories of Judge Peter Cameron on the rail commenting on horses and greeting exhibitors when visiting local shows or Nationals. He was a horseman’s horseman; one I grew to respect very much. He made everyone matter in the show ring at all shows, whether a Class A or county fair horse show. He was my first authority on Showmanship and instilled a love for it that I later shared. Not only did he take the time to train the youth after he judged their class, he offered pointers to go home and improve on. Probably the biggest gift he gave me was when he trained me in Arabian horse judging as a youth.

“Judge Cameron planted a seed that grew into my having champion youth horse judgers, and now, as adults, my children give of themselves to teach other youth, the art of horse judging while being honorable horseman too. “It only takes one,” is fitting regarding the impact of Judge Cameron, because he called it the way it was, regardless of who was in the class. He was the standard for all Arabian judges to aspire to. May God bless his soul.”

“My daughter and her horse showed successfully for years and gave Mr. Cameron credit for being the best and smartest judge they ever showed under. Later, after I told Mr. Cameron the story, he hugged me and we both got teary. A truly great man—I adored him.”

The crowd went wild! Then the trainer thought they were clapping for him, and he danced even harder! Funniest horse show memory ever! Thanks for the memories, Mr. Cameron. You were one in a billion and you will be missed.”
