As many of you know, my father passed away recently, and that has left a huge void in my life.

Losing someone so close, so special, has caused me to reflect on many things: who he was, who I am, our life together, our family, what’s important. Through it all, so many of you in our horse community have been so kind to me and so strong. You really made a difference in how my family and I got through this.

I cannot help but think of how extraordinary our Arabian horse group is. The love and support that was offered to us was almost overwhelming, but critical to us in our difficult time. Over the past few weeks, so many stories and memories were shared. If you knew my father, you can just imagine! In the midst of our grief, we would find ourselves laughing at some tale of his exploits long ago, or smiling with pride as someone related an act of kindness my dad had done that we’d never known. It was like oxygen, life support from so many friends, new and old. My mother and I cannot thank you enough for what you did in taking the time to reach out to us.

My family loves the Arabian breed, and Dad especially loved the horses. Although it will be different moving forward, I can promise you one thing. We will be moving forward, and through this all, my love and dedication to you all has only grown stronger.

OPINION OF LARA AMES

The Dilemma Of Trainers’ Kids For the past several years, I’ve thought about doing a column on the subject of trainers’ sons and daughters who want to show Arabian horses, and every time, I’ve left it alone because it’s a controversial topic. Finally, all that consideration and talking to others, both trainers and the parents of juvenile competitors, gave me a few thoughts to share.

One thing we can all agree on is that most parents want what is best for their children. Does that mean winning? Maybe. Maybe not.

There are also all the other benefits we cite for junior riding—the development of skill and competitive ability, the appreciation of and love for the horse, the friendship with other kids. Sometimes we lose sight of how important that is. This column may be, primarily, about the fairness of trainers’ kids (perceived as having a competitive edge because they literally grow up in a barn with horses), competing against owners’ children, who don’t have that level of day-to-day knowledge. But let’s not forget the big picture for young horse people.

And let’s admit that trainers are in a tough spot. They want their children to enjoy the show ring, but they also need to keep their clients happy.

Trainers, whether they own their own barns or work for owners who fund their training stable, are responsible for the success of their operations. With that sense of propriety, some hope that their children will follow them into the business. In Arabians, just as we need a steady supply of talented horses, we also need an on-going stream of men and women to train them. One of our best sources is our current trainers’ families. So, there are advantages not only to the trainers’ families, but to the breed too, when trainers’ kids develop their skills in the ring.

On the flip side for trainers, even the most successful ones don’t have the cash to buy horses on a par with those of many owners. Because we have JTR classes, their children can catch-ride owners’ horses, and I agree, that can produce some powerful combinations. I have had owners say to me, “How can my child compete with that?”

Perhaps that’s a lesson in life both for the trainer’s child who doesn’t have an owner able to lend a horse and must compete against kids whose parents can purchase the best in the ring, and for the owner’s son who can buy the best, but can’t exhibit as well against a trainer’s talented daughter. The JOTR classes, then, offer what is seen as a more level field for owners’ kids. With JTR and JOTR events, there is a venue for each.

All trainers must make some judgment calls. For every owner that will lend a trainer’s child a top horse to ride, there are others who see doing that as putting their own children at a disadvantage. Trainers must balance keeping owners happy vs. giving their own children as many opportunities as possible. They also have to weigh what is best for the breed. As one trainer said to me, “It’s great that all of these trainers’ kids are showing, but is that putting food on the dinner table—or a ribbon?”

The bottom line is that everyone has to do what is best for them and their family. Life is not always fair, and I think that alone is important for our youth to consider. There can be only one blue ribbon; not everyone can win. That keeps us striving for more, coming back for more. ■

Auctions being a passion of Greg Knowles’ and an active part of his professional life—mostly in the capacity of auctioneer—creating his very own venue had always been a goal of his, and was made a reality with the United Select Sale.

With timing being everything, there was none better than at the height of the Scottsdale Show. Location is also a key element, and having a special relationship with the Ames family, Greg felt their Cedar Ridge Arabians Scottsdale facility was the perfect location.

Participants enjoyed an impressive party tent and red carpet, reminiscent of auctions past. Another goal achieved was his vision of 100% transparency within the sale.

One of the pinnacle points of the evening was the selling of the highest lot, the beautiful CW Soleil (Soul of Gazal SF x MA Sonata), who was consigned by Roland Williams and his daughter, Colleen Cozzetto, and sold to lucky bidder, Manny Lawrence of Jade Creek Arabians.

To the purchasers and sellers of these special horses and embryos, congratulations! To everyone who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make this wonderful event a success, thank you! They come to us from Japan where they are very common. QR is short for “Quick Response” (they can be read quickly by a cell phone). They are used to take a piece of information from a transitory media and put it into your cell phone. You may see QR Codes in magazine adverts, on billboards, a web page or even on someone’s t-shirt. When the code is scanned, it gives you details about a business, a link to videos, websites or coupons that can be used at stores.

Where Do You Get A QR Code Reader?

First you need to have a smartphone or a tablet equipped with a camera. Next you will need to download an app for your phone/tablet to be able to scan the QR Codes. QR Code Reader can be found in the App Store or by searching for QR Code Readers online; there are several to choose from.

How Do You Scan A QR Code?

Once you have the QR Code Reader app on your phone/tablet, it’s easy! You open the app and hold the phone/tablet above the QR code so that it’s clearly visible within your screen. Two things can happen: it will automatically scan the code, or with some readers, you have to press a button to snap a picture of it. It will then read the code and take you to a website, video, coupon, etc.

How Can You Use A QR Code?

QR codes can be used in a number of ways. You can use them for your farm, stallion(s) or business, no matter how small or large. They can link to your Farm’s website, your stallion’s show record, video or link to promotional photos; or a business can link popular products and how to purchase them. QR Codes can be added to print advertising, stallion cards, flyers, event invites, business cards, etc.

ew stallions make a mark in the Arabian horse industry in a mere three years. But such is the case with Na’Mous Al Shahania (FA El Shawan x Virtuosa MLR, by Versace). The United States National Champion Colt in 2015, he has already gone on to prove himself with just one foal crop on the ground.

Na’Mous Al Shahania was bred and is owned by Marlene Ann Rieder and the Al Shahania Stud. Founded in the late 1980s, the Stud is owned by H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani of Qatar and is known for producing top racing Arabians and Thoroughbreds and most recently, Arabian show and breeding horses.

Na’Mous Al Shahania is a striking bay stallion that was first introduced to the U.S. at the 2016 U.S. National Championships where he easily captured the Junior Colt Championship title. He went on to the Scottsdale show a few months later in February of 2017 and earned a unanimous victory in the Junior Championship there.

Trained and presented by Ted Carson, Na’Mous Al Shahania is an incredible example of Arabian type. He has a huge eye and wonderful expression with great length and curve in his neck. The stallion is also a good size, resulting in an undeniable presence, whether he is in the show arena or the barn.

While his looks and conformation are certainly attributes, Carson also likes the stallion because of his temperament. “Na’Mous Al Shahania is really easy to be around,” he says. “His temperament is amazing—he’s always a gentleman, which makes it easy for everyone to handle him.”

As if it wasn’t enough for Na’Mous Al Shahania to have achieved so much as a Junior horse, he’s now making sure his legacy continues. The stallion has his first foal crop, to date numbering 15, on the ground and they are proving themselves in the ring as well.

One of the colts, Nabhaan Al Shahania (Na’Mous Al Shahania x Elzunya Meia Lua), made his debut in Scottsdale this year with Carson, and just like his father, made his mark, capturing the same Junior Colt Champion title.

“He’s a really special colt and is a good representation of his sire and of Al Shahania Stud,” says Carson.

“I’m excited to see what else this youngster can do.”

“It’s pretty special when a junior colt wins on his own, then produces a winner at such a high level in his first foal crop,” says Carson.

What does the future hold for Na’Mous Al Shahania and his ever-expanding progeny? “We plan to continue keeping him in the spotlight as a sire, and there is interest in him from some of the world’s leading breeders,” says Carson. “We are shipping frozen semen all over the globe, from the U.S. to the Middle East to South America.”

The interest in Na’Mous Al Shahania has continued to grow, especially following the Scottsdale Show, after Arabian enthusiasts had a chance to see what the young stallion is capable of producing. “We have had a lot of inquiries after people were able to see Nabhaan Al Shahania in person,” says Carson. “We’re excited about what the future holds for both he and his sire. I think we’re just seeing the beginning of what promises to be a long and productive breeding career for Na’Mous Al Shahania and, in the future, Nabhaan Al Shahania.” ■

he 2019 Scottsdale Show will likely be remembered as one of the coldest, muckiest shows on record. Wintry weather produced hail, sleet and downpours. Snow covered peaks made for surreal surroundings above WestWorld. Still, no amount of wet, frigid weather could dampen the enthusiasm for this spectacle of Arabian horse shows. The “Greatest Horse Show On Earth” and Scottsdale carried on, and a great time was had by spectators and competitors alike.

From its debut in 1955 on the Arizona Biltmore grounds to today’s 11-day extravaganza, the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show remains a first-class act.

This year featured nearly 2,400 horses from 47 states and 15 countries showing in more than 1,100

class competitions.

More than $2 million dollars in prize money was awarded in nearly every discipline offered to our ever-versatile Arabian and Half-Arabian show horses.

Scottsdale is the Arabian horse industry’s first of the year premiere event. It’s the perfect opportunity to see and be seen, visit old friends and make new ones. Built on top of this, however, is a broad-based community atmosphere emanating throughout the show grounds. The city of Scottsdale and Arabian Horse Association of Arizona promote this event far and wide to the entire community.

farther-reaching show arenas. Tuesday’s Military Day offered free admission. Both Sundays of the show invited folks to the Cowboy Church services. Other events included pet adoption fairs, and equine and wildlife education seminars.

Festivities showcasing our Arabian horses are major events off-site too. Rae-Dawn Arabians opened up their Scottsdale farm for two spectacular parties generously inviting folks to eat, drink and make merry while viewing exquisite Rae-Dawn bloodstock. Owners Murray and

Shopping and dining at Scottsdale 2019 beaconed with countless eclectic choices. More than 400 booths and outdoor displays offered the gamut of shopping options, and dining choices ranging from old fashioned fairground eats to global culinary delights. It’s no wonder that an estimated 300,000 folks walked through the doors of WestWorld to experience Scottsdale 2019.

This year’s show highlights came as always from the competitions as well as the special events unique to the Scottsdale experience. Scottsdale Signature Stallion classes brought top quality in-hand breeding bloodstock to compete with professional and amateur handlers alike. Three- and 4-year-old Western, Country English and Hunter Pleasure purebreds competed for prestigious and lucrative prizes. The Scottsdale Signature Stallion Auction raised thousands of dollars offering breedings to the best of the breed. This year EKS Alihandro topped the list, with bidding reaching $13,000.

The daily show schedule featured tip-top competition in every show arena. New this year was the $20,000 Conway Arabians AEPA Scottsdale Maturity for amateur owners showing their country English pleasure horses aged 5 to 11. Final Friday and Saturday afternoons at the Reining arena hosted more than $75,000 in prize money for 4- and 5-year-old purebred and HalfArabian Reining Futurity horses, all while rock music accompanied each horses’ performance along with whoops and whistles! And the final Saturday night in the Equidome was a packed house, yet poignant. The opening ceremony commenced with prized stallion TA Mozart and Crystal McNutt carrying the stars and stripes. All paid tribute to Mozart’s best friend, and our late countryman, the unequalled and inimitable Dick Ames.

Scottsdale 2019 concluded Sunday night with the APAHA Awards.

This event honors our industry’s best humans and horses. Special acknowledgement went to Ryan Melendez, himself a cancer survivor, awarded Person Of The Year and recognized for raising more than $500,000 for cancer research. Lollie and Dick Ames were also recognized with the Lifetime Achievement Award, including Dick being awarded Amateur English of the Year posthumously.

Greatness lives on ...

The Arabian horse industry works hard to take care of its own, and young folks are the future of the Arabian horse breed. To that end, thousands of dollars of scholarship funds were awarded to youth competitors, including Friends of Vail awarding six $1,000 scholarships.

Also, indispensable to Scottsdale 2019 were the nearly 200 volunteers working tirelessly and effectively at every end of the horse show, keeping events running smoothly and on time.

The start of the 2019 show season for me has been spectacular! The Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show is personally one of my favorite shows to attend! There are so many people involved with my success and I would like to give them all a heartfelt THANK YOU! Many people work behind the scenes during the shows and others give me support by either watching me at my events or even online. There is no way I could possibly name every single person that is involved, but I want each and every one of you to know how much you mean to me!

However, I want to personally thank those who are the backbone to my success. First, my grandparents, Dean and Terri Wikel; without their breeding program and love of the Arabian horse, I would not have the amazing horses I get to show in the ring! Their love and support is unconditional! I would also like to thank my parents, Randy and Heather Wikel. The support they give me is 100% and they travel with me all over the United States and Canada, usually driving my horses to the shows. By unanimous decision ... the weather! Holy cow! It hailed ice during some of the halter classes!

NICHOLAS BREAUX 2019 Scottsdale Highlight …

While most people will say their own win was the highlight of the show, and that’s of course more than ok, I will admit that it was equally exciting to see many of my barn mates get well deserved Top Tens and higher titles. We all devote time, energy and money into this beloved sport and hobby, so to see them be rewarded, is incredibly heartwarming.

Favorite horse/moment not my own …

Watching Fiero’s Watch and Brennan Kavanagh win the Half-Arabian Park Horse Championship (ATR) in the Friday evening performance was SO exciting! I had never seen Fiero’s Watch and I’ve never met Brennan, but their performance was nothing short of memorable that evening. He is clearly a young adult rider that has an incredible future ahead of him.

If I could change one thing …

The Saturday evening performance feels like a missed opportunity. It’s a sold-out crowd looking forward to seeing our amazing horses shown at their very best, and yet, the production of that evening leaves a lot to be desired. The evening performance moved very slowly with very few classes being performed in the first three hours when the majority of the crowd is able to stick around and watch before they enter “bedtime” hours.

The weather! Really though, because of the weather, the warm-up areas were scarce and overly crowded, which made it difficult to warm up appropriately and safely. So, I suggest adding a covered practice area for rainy days.

I love the yearling halter classes in Scottsdale, because it’s fun to see these new show horses we haven’t seen compete before!

Being busy showing halter all week, I rarely get a chance to see anything in the Equidome. This year, my family and I went to watch the Saturday evening session and we loved it! Shawn Dahl honoring Dick Ames was wonderful, then watching Monaco Jullyen win the open western with an incredible performance was really fun!

Showing four horses, Jagger Jullyen BV, Lightning McQueen CRS, Phat Kid and IIB Kiss Me Sanrosa, and have all four win championships! Jagger actually won two, the AAOTR 55+ and the AATR Elite Hunter Pleasure. Phat Kid won two also, with Koy Moody in H/A Select Hunter Pleasure AATR and me in the AAOTR 55+. It was pretty awesome! High Point also!

He put on a western pleasure clinic with both Joe Reser and Leslie Doran. I couldn’t take my eyes off of him.

KRISTI STEWART 2019 Scottsdale Highlight …

When our first-time Scottsdale competitor, Christina Jensen and Dana Ducati, were called out as Reserve Champion out of 24 horses in the Arabian Hunter Pleasure Choice AATR class. And the icing on the cake, was our other horse, Lord Have Mercy and Elise Graves, getting called out as Unanimous Champions in the same class!

What an amazing feeling, getting to stay in the arena for both win shots!

Tom and Leola Hansen have been in training with Cowden since the fall of 2013, when they met him assistant training at Lervick Arabians in the Pacific Northwest that summer. What is it about the hunter horse that attracted you to the discipline?

I love how hunters look effortless in how they cover the ground and appreciate the clean look and lines of a well braided hunter and rider.

Watching a big class of hand-galloping hunters is so exciting, but it’s even more fun to ride!

How would you convince someone new to riding to try hunter? It really depends on the individual. For those that like speed, I call out the fun of a good hand gallop, and for those that may be converting from say, saddle seat, I would share that it is a more relaxed discipline that is not as easy as it looks, which makes it an awesome challenge.

Who is your favorite hunter horse not owned by you? Why? Klint Black. He is the epitome of what I think beautiful is in the hunter ring.

Klint travels big and bold, with beautiful rolling motion and his sexiness and longevity is un-paralleled.

Is there a particular horse you look for in a pedigree that assures you have a horse for hunter? I’m a huge Sundance Kid V fan; he’s created so many phenomenal hunter and western pleasure horses.

What would you like to see done to further promote the benefits of a hunter pleasure horse? I love the AHPA, as I think it has generated a ton of new excitement around the discipline and breeding for hunters.

The momentum that the AHPA has created is absolutely what I think was missing and is a great way to continue that.

Hunter competition has historically more entrants in each division than any other discipline. How do you stand out in the ring? The best way to stand out in the show ring is the overall picture of a talented horse, top effort that day in the ring, and enjoying the competition.

Nothing better than a lineup of a strong group of riders in the Equidome after giving it their best, all of us happy with our horses.

How would you convince someone new to riding to try hunter?

Putting an interested convert up on a big moving hunter is the best way to convince someone how great the hunter category is—those “test rides” work every time!

What is it about the hunter horse that attracted you to the discipline?

I fell in love with that big moving collection that is exemplified by so many of the talented hunters I’ve ridden, like Black Label CCR, Khurb Appeal, Cylent Lightning CCA, and now with Royal Normandy and Whiskey River VH. There’s nothing like it, I daydream about those rides!

Who is your favorite hunter horse not owned by you? Why? TN Khaliente is an amazing young horse that has beauty with power and refinement, and terrific ability, collection and power. It’s beautiful to watch either Justin or Tom Hansen ride him, and he is only 4 years old.

Why do you show in hunter pleasure vs. other disciplines? The perfection of collection combined with power in hunter pleasure is difficult to achieve, and those times when I can accomplish the level of success I’m looking for in my horse are exhilarating and motivating. I’ve not had that occur in other disciplines.

Who is your favorite hunter horse not owned by you? Why? That would be Cause for Celebration, ridden by Wendy Potts.

That horse is big and a huge mover yet retains so much quality. I love watching that duo.

Where is your favorite place to show in Hunter Pleasure? My favorite all-time ring for hunter pleasure is the Ford Truck Arena in Tulsa at U.S. Nationals. It is so big, you don’t have to constantly be worried about placement or getting into big packs. It’s also magical just being in there, period! I actually got a bit teary-eyed the first time I rode in there!

Second, would be the Wendell at WestWorld. It’s nice and big, it’s got atmosphere, and I enjoy showing outside.

Is there a particular horse you look for in a pedigree that assures you have a horse for hunter? A hunter pedigree has to have trainability, quality and athleticism.

I don’t think a flash of color hurts either!

Can a hunter pleasure horse usually transition more easily into other disciplines? I think the hunter division is becoming as specialized as some of the other disciplines. This does make it more difficult to cross over into other divisions, although many people still do side saddle, halter, western and sport horse with their hunters.

fences precursor, you always get to ride with a hard hat and tall leather boots with grippy breeches to help keep your seat secure. You use both hands and your saddle has knee blocks/rolls to help keep your leg in position.

Who is your favorite hunter horse not owned by you? Why? I have too many favorites to just list one. We are fortunate to have bred, raised, trained and marketed some amazing hunters, both purebred and Half-Arabian, that have gone on to win with their owners.

The common denominator with all my favorites is that they have a tubular shaped body, balanced from front to back, eye appeal and are great moving.

Can a hunter pleasure horse usually transition more easily into other disciplines?

Generally speaking, the hunter horse’s body type can lend itself to success in the halter ring and many can compete in the western pleasure division also.

What is it about the hunter horse that attracted you to the discipline?

I think it’s a division that our horses can do with ease and shows off their Arabian type.

I love seeing a hunter horses presented in a ground covering fashion with an arched headset, though soft and not over bridled. Tack should be neat and fit well and the horse should have tight and clean braids. Riding attire should complement the horse and not take away from it.

Is there a particular horse you look for in a pedigree that assures you have a horse for hunter? When choosing a horse, some lines I go for are Sundance Kid V, Versace and Millennium LOA. What would you like to see done to further promote the benefits of a hunter pleasure horse? I think the hunter division is on a great track, especially with the new AHPA program. It’s a fantastic incentive for breeders and exhibitors to get involved in this discipline.

Are you satisfied with how the hunter pleasure horse is treated within the Arabian community? I think hunter has garnered a lot of respect in the last 5-10 years. It’s no longer a “filler” class and requires you to have a horse specifically cut out for it. The competition is so steep and exciting nowadays, that I think a lot of people not previously interested in hunter have gotten involved.

What is it about the hunter horse that attracted you to the discipline?

Their stride and forward motion.

How would you convince someone new to riding to try hunter? As an instructor I always start all my riders with hunter and go from there. If they want more then I move them to English and if you like western, I move them that direction. I love my clients riding hunter because it’s so competitive yet welcoming to a beginner rider.

Who is your favorite hunter horse not owned by you? Why? All My Wishes, bred and owned by Pegasus Arabians. She was truly the horse that made me fall in love with the discipline.

What would you like to see done to further promote the benefits of a hunter pleasure horse? I would like to see true hunters winning. A hunt horse should look like it’s ready to take a fence.

Sometimes I will have one that appears to make a country horse, but he’s just not happy carrying himself that high. It’s all about the horse loving his job.

the “type” they are looking for that day. All you can do is be confident in the horse you have to present and try to project that confidence and enjoyment of your horse to the judges. That, and I think particularly strong canter-hand gallop transitions always help.

Who is your favorite hunter horse not owned by you? Why? In the open division, Royal Maestro. In the amateur division, Lord Have Mercy always puts a smile on my face to watch show.

Where is your favorite place to show in Hunter Pleasure? There is nothing better than hand galloping a hunter horse around Wendell Arena in Scottsdale (assuming the weather is cooperating!).

Is there a particular horse you look for in a pedigree that assures you have a horse for hunter? There is no denying the influence of sires like Sundance Kid V, Always A Jullyen V, and KM Bugatti in the hunter arena, but the exciting thing about hunter horses is that you can find a superstar that was bred for the English or western pleasure divisions but found their niche as a hunter instead. Sometimes you find the hidden treasures in surprising places.

What would you like to see done to further promote the benefits of a hunter pleasure horse? The creation of the AHPA has done wonderful things for the hunter horse market, and as the program continues to grow, I think the horses will continue to flourish as well. The market for hunter prospects is stronger than I have ever seen it, which I hope will continue to encourage people to breed specifically for hunter horses.

What is it about the hunter horse that attracted you to the discipline? Hunter horses that have pure talent are amazing to watch.

I was so drawn to the ease they show when going around the ring, and when you find a horse that enjoys their job, it’s incredible to see. Arabians are such a graceful breed and I feel that the hunter division can showcase their beautiful necks, motion, stamina and physique all in one.

Who is your favorite hunter horse not owned by you? Why? Definitely, Lord Have Mercy+// (aka, Dodger). He took me to my first Scottsdale Unanimous Championship! He is one of the sweetest horses in the barn and has such an incredibly large heart. He tries so hard to do a good job and truly loves to show. His personality and pure talent make him one of my personal favorites and an incredible horse.

Where is your favorite place to show in Hunter Pleasure? Wendell Arena at WestWorld in Scottsdale, AZ. I had the pleasure of showing a very talented purebred Ar abian Horse Times | 137 | Volume 49, No. 9, Issue #3

in that arena for the first time this last year.

The large arena allows competitive classes to really show off their horse without getting lost in the crowd. Plus, when the weather is nice, it’s an amazing place to be!

Why do you show in hunter pleasure vs. other disciplines? Hunter pleasure is my favorite discipline to show in for the fast pace and motion; it’s graceful and controlled.

Hunter horses are my favorite to watch as well as ride. I was never very good at riding western or reining, and I’m still new to riding country English.

Are you satisfied with how the hunter pleasure horse is treated within the Arabian community? Absolutely, there are so many different opportunities to show off hunter horses and the class selection has really expanded in the last couple of years. The Arabian horse is such a versatile breed and it’s wonderful to see the hunter pleasure classes growing every year.

What is it about the hunter horse that attracted you to the discipline?

After taking a 35-year absence from the Arabian show world, the hunter discipline seemed to be the most natural fit.

Who is your favorite hunter horse not owned by you? Why? In the current environment, I’d have to pick Royal Maestro, PA Cassara Dancer and EC Cause To Celebrate. They all have a special aura about them; a “look at me” quality with free, loose and rangy motion. A stand-out from the past is WD Noble Ladd.

Where is your favorite place to show in Hunter Pleasure? Scottsdale and the U.S. Nationals, because of the excitement and level of competition.

Why do you show in hunter pleasure vs. other disciplines? I think it is the most natural of all the disciplines for the Arabian horse.

What would you like to see done to further promote the benefits of a hunter pleasure horse? I think that the AHPA is doing a great job promoting the hunter horse, as well as the other futurity programs.

What is it about the hunter horse that attracted you to the discipline?

The beauty of the horse and rider’s frame, roundness in collection and forward movement of the discipline. There’s nothing prettier than seeing the horses enter the gate with their ears forward and a big forward moving trot.

How would you convince someone new to riding to try hunter? It’s a great discipline! You cover a lot of ground and the hand gallops are fun too. The picture of a beautiful hunter horse and rider collected and in frame is unforgettable.

Where is your favorite place to show in Hunter Pleasure? We love the Scottsdale show. It’s in our backyard and both the inside and outside rings are great. There is nothing better than starting your show season with a successful Scottsdale.

The competition. Our hunter classes are generally the biggest and most competitive classes at most shows. I also believe a lot of our Arabians are best suited for the hunter discipline.

I try to treat every show like nationals and make sure everything is perfect. I’m not sure if that actually makes a difference to the judges, or if it just gives me more confidence to ride harder, but it seems to work!

Who is your favorite hunter horse not owned by you? Why? FVF Buccardi, owned by Tom and Leola Hansen. He is so stunning under saddle, in-hand and in the breeding department. Not to mention, he is a really sweet horse to be around.

Initially I was attracted to the elegance of a hunter. I feel I’m love with the effortless, flowing motion; also, how beautiful and traditional the discipline itself is.

Where is your favorite place to show in Hunter Pleasure? I love the Del Mar regional. It is always so beautiful, and the energy is laid back and fun. My horses seem to like it there too!

Can a hunter pleasure horse usually transition more easily into other disciplines? I think a foundation of moving forward and balancing off their hind end would make hunters ideal candidates to transition into other disciplines.

How would you convince someone new to riding to try hunter? Riding a hunter is a little more amateur-friendly because you can use two reins and the fundamentals translate to the other disciplines.

Who is your favorite hunter horse not owned by you? Why? We both have always loved watching Vertuoso, ridden by Andrew Smith and owned by North by Northwest. He is simply gorgeous and makes it look effortless. You can tell the horse loves being in the show ring.

Where is your favorite place to show in Hunter Pleasure? The greatest show on earth, Scottsdale. Both because it has the feel of a National show without the added anxiety. It’s a great place to see where you stack up for the rest of the show year. Also, the rings are large enough to maneuver a forward moving hunter.

By making sure our horses are handy enough to be placed anywhere in a field of many hunters, and teaching the horses and amateurs to ride on and off the rail, knowing where to be best placed to be seen by the judges.

Can a hunter pleasure horse usually transition more easily into other disciplines? Usually it is the other way around, western or country horses tend to drop into being a hunter verses hunter horses making the transition out of the discipline.

Coming from the open dressage world, I gravitate toward a horse with a powerful, ground covering stride; self-carriage and true connection. I feel our hunter pleasure horses exemplify this.

It is very important in these large classes to have ring awareness and make sure you maintain an open spot on the rail. Also, wearing a well fitted jacket that complements your horse, completes a winning picture.

Who is your favorite hunter horse not owned by you? Why? A horse I always admired was Chance to Jam. He was elegant, well-mannered and effortless in his way of going.

Where is your favorite place to show in Hunter Pleasure? The Wendell arena in Scottsdale is one of my favorites!

Are you satisfied with how the hunter pleasure horse is treated within the Arabian community? I feel sometimes people breed for English or western horses, and if you can’t make it in those disciplines, then the horse becomes a hunter. However, some of the best hunters were actually bred to be a hunter!

hunters, coupled with the size of our classes, it is crucial to allow the judges every opportunity to see you. Also, overall turnout of both horse and rider is extremely important. The devil’s in the details!

Where is your favorite place to show in Hunter Pleasure? This would have to be a toss-up between the Wendell Arena at Scottsdale and showing on the green shavings at U.S. Nationals.

Is there a particular horse you look for in a pedigree that assures you have a horse for hunter? Something I love about the Half-Arabian hunter pleasure division is the diversity and depth that the numerous crosses provide. With so many other breeds contributing strengths to this class, it creates an extremely high quality, diversified spectrum of hunter horse. Personally, I have a soft-spot for the Half-Friesian crosses, if that wasn’t already obvious!

Why do you show in hunter pleasure vs. other disciplines? Growing up eventing, I was very familiar with a hunt seat. To me, whether observing or riding, there has always been a quality about hunter pleasure which is effortless. The fluidity between horse and rider exudes a classic elegance that drew me in.

However, many horses are bred for a specific discipline and upon arrival tell us otherwise. A proper foundation, true connection and correct conformation will contribute to the success of any horse, regardless of the discipline.

What is it about the hunter horse that attracted you to the discipline?

I’ve always loved watching hunters, it doesn’t really matter what breed. I love the hunter/jumpers, Quarter Horses, and our Arabians. I get more excited watching a hunter class than the park classes.

Hunter competition has historically more entrants in each division than any other discipline. How do you stand out in the ring? I think you need to have a horse that checks all the boxes. You need a horse with size, quality, athleticism and pretty. After that you, need to train your horse to do all the elements of the class as best they can. Each gait to their best ability. And each transition, as best they can. You need to know how much to push your horse, and when to back off; then you need to go and show. When I’m in the ring, I try to stay on the inside track and not get covered, without being annoying and circling the judges too often. Making pretty passes is important.

As far as turn out, I think it’s really important to be tidy, have a straight number, clean horse/tack and boots. I personally, am addicted to buying show jackets and shirts, but with all the new controversy over show clothes, I’ve tried to be more conservative lately. I don’t think you need the most expensive clothes to win, however, your hair done tidy and your jacket fitting right are so important for the overall picture.

Who is your favorite hunter horse not owned by you? Why? Cause to Celebrate, owned my Maggie McCarthy and trained by Wendy Griffith Potts. To me he looks like a true hunter. He’s got great quality, has size, movement and a great gallop. Plus, I’m a sucker for a pretty bay.

I assumed I wasn’t allowed to say a horse I train myself, but Obsidian Knightt+++//, owned by Lori and Nicole Quinn, is another favorite; one I’ve had the privilege of training for the last nine years. He checks all the boxes of what a true hunter should be. And the more I get to show him, I realize how much heart this horse truly has. He’s one of the greats!

Where is your favorite place to show in Hunter Pleasure? Hands down, Wendell Arena in Scottsdale on a sunny day! It’s got such a great feel to it, and I think the horses like showing in there too!

Why do you show in hunter pleasure vs. other disciplines? Hunter has always felt the most natural to me. I’ve grown up showing hunters, and to me, when you get the perfect “stars aligned” type of ride, it’s like no other. For me I’m always chasing those types of rides.

What is it about the hunter horse that attracted you to the discipline? I love a good horse from any discipline, but I think that hunter is the most natural discipline for horses in general, hence the large entries per class.

It’s nice to see happy, forward moving horses who aren’t labored when going around the ring. Plus, it’s fun to compete in classes that generally have 10+ entries compared to the usual two- or three-horse class.

NICOLE REED Farm affiliation: Ghost Pines Farm New Kensington, PA

Hunter competition has historically more entrants in each division than any other discipline. How do you stand out in the ring? I think you stand out in the ring by making sure the overall picture looks put together regardless of the discipline you choose to show in. Hunters are supposed to be traditional, which means being conservative when choosing your hunt coat color. I am very picky when it comes to my amateurs and my clothes, in that they fit perfectly. They don’t have to be custom or the most expensive, but they better fit properly! Once that “hunter look” is achieved, then it’s on you to ride smart and outride all the other horses in the ring.

Is there a particular horse you look for in a pedigree that assures you have a horse for hunter? Honestly, no. That’s the beauty of the hunter ring, horses bred for western or English can both end up national champion hunters. Many horses excel in a hunter frame so it doesn’t always matter who they’re by or out of … halter, western or English producing stallions can all throw outstanding hunters.

Are you satisfied with how the hunter pleasure horse is treated within the Arabian community? For the most part, yes. I think it has gotten much better compared to years past. No one usually breeds for hunters.

I have talked with some English producing stallion owners that take a negative outlook if their stud throws babies that end up being hunters.

That’s so sad. This is an expensive industry and a lot of the money can be found in western and English horses, whereas hunters tend to get overlooked. I love the AHPA and think it has greatly helped our hunter field in such a short period of time. People are now looking to buy and nominate youngsters into the AHPA in hopes of winning back money.

It’s great to see people looking to breed their mares purposely for a resulting hunter baby. We should be doing anything and everything to help our industry grow and supporting each and every discipline. After all, it is the versatile Arabian that we love and cherish so.

Can a hunter pleasure horse usually transition more easily into other disciplines? Yes, definitely! We start all our youngsters in a hunter frame regardless if they are bred to be western or English horses. It helps them learn to round their backs and go forward into the bridle, both of which make for a better, all-around horse. Once they figure out the basics, then we see where they want to end up. Just because they are bred for western doesn’t mean they get there right away. I have found that sometimes letting them go hunter beforehand, helps them grow up mentally and physically while gradually transitioning into the discipline they were “bred for.”

It’s such a great feeling to be in the two-point at a hand gallop effortlessly and freely moving at a fast pace. And of course, a beautiful hunter is something to behold!

The best way to stand out in large hunter pleasure classes is good ring position; not being covered up, showing your horse to the judges effectively, not just riding in the middle, but finding your spots so you can be alone on the straightaways, looking for the best ring position to stand out.

Where is your favorite place to show in Hunter Pleasure? Wendell Arena at the Scottsdale show. It’s a huge, fun arena!

Why do you show in hunter pleasure vs. other disciplines? I love the athleticism involved in riding hunter pleasure. It is more physically demanding, and that is appealing to me. The close contact hunt saddle really makes you feel part of the horse, too.

KATIE RUSSELL Farm affiliation: Burkman Centre Santa Ynez, CA What is it about the hunter horse that attracted you to the discipline? I love the way hunter pleasure horses cover ground. A top hunter is a great mover, with a free shoulder and ground-covering stride.

Are you satisfied with how the hunter pleasure horse is treated within the Arabian community? It is great to see the hunter pleasure horses gaining more notoriety and stature in our Arabian community. It used to be that hunters were horses that didn’t make it in other disciplines.

Now, people are breeding specifically for hunters and the discipline has become incredibly competitive with some amazing hunters. And, the AHPA has created quite the buzz! It’s an awesome addition to hunters.

What is it about the hunter horse that attracted you to the discipline?

It doesn’t matter whether it’s the “fancy” moving or more “traditional” style, I love the natural beauty and fluidity of the hunter horse.

How would you convince someone new to riding to try hunter? By explaining to them that riding hunter teaches great balance, along with many other fundamental skills required to become a good rider. Plus, it’s so much fun!

Where is your favorite place to show in Hunter Pleasure? I love showing at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds.

Is there a particular horse you look for in a pedigree that assures you have a horse for hunter? I feel that’s one of the great things about hunters … there are many different types of pedigrees capable of making a great hunter horse.

What is it about the hunter horse that attracted you to the discipline?

I’ve always loved showing hunter pleasure horses. I took jumping lessons for three years when I was in middle school, so that’s probably why I have always enjoyed riding hunt seat. I started showing in Arabian hunter pleasure around 1990, when you were lucky to have one class at a Class A show because it was not popular back then. I have always loved how natural the frame is and I must have a good mover.

Hunter competition has historically more entrants in each division than any other discipline. How do you stand out in the ring? You must have something special about your horse, not just another plain faced, solid bay. What I look for in my hunters, is a horse that has that extra something special about them. Being pretty is important. Big is definitely a plus, and flashy—I love white, it always stands out in the ring. A freaky neck is another huge plus. And a great mover is more important to me than anything. I love a big, soft, fluid moving horse. If you have at least 3/4 of the things above, you will stand out in the ring.

KRISTI STEWART Stewart Performance Horses Junction City, OR

How would you convince someone new to riding to try hunter? One of my selling points is it really makes you a great rider. Not only do you get to walk, trot and canter, but you also get to move on at that hand gallop.

It really teaches you balance and coordination in an English saddle.

Hunter classes are also typically big, so you really learn how to navigate around lots of horses and work on your ring skills. You get a lot more time in the saddle on a hunter than in some of the other disciplines.

Who is your favorite hunter horse not owned by you? Why? We have some real standouts in our barn that are not owned by us, so it’s hard to narrow it down. But if had to pick two, it would be: Lord Have Mercy+//, a 3-time National Champion who just won two more championships at Scottsdale. He has been in our barn his whole show life and is 11 years old this year. He’s a purebred and a huge 16.3 hands, bay, with four little white socks, and is a great mover. He’s so consistent when he shows and is such a good boy to be around.

ROL O Whata Night+//, a 2-time Reserve National Champion and also just earned another championship at Scottsdale. We have had him in our barn since he was 3 years old and he is now 10. He’s a very pretty chestnut, and big bodied with an amazing neck! He always turns it on when he shows and always uses his ears. He’s just a happy guy and it really shows when he’s in the ring.

Where is your favorite place to show in Hunter Pleasure? Wendell Arena at Scottsdale.! It’s such a big ring. You can really show off your horse and it has plenty of room to get around. Plus, it’s usually (not this year) really nice weather and it’s fun to show outside.

I’ve always liked hunter; as a kid I jumped my Welsh/Arab, “shorty.”

Hunter competition has historically more entrants in each division than any other discipline. How do you stand out in the ring? You need to big and pretty.

How would you convince someone new to riding to try hunter?

The classes are competitive, and you get more riding time than in other disciplines.

Who is your favorite hunter horse not owned by you? Why? ROL O Whata Night+//, because he is so good in and out of the ring. He is so talented, and he really loves his job.

Where is your favorite place to show in Hunter Pleasure? At U.S. Nationals in the Ford Truck Arena, because the arena is a great size; you can really show your horse off, even in large classes.

I think, like everybody, I try to wear jackets that are a little unique and I try to show my horses well. Ring position is something that is hard to teach to riders and is so very important when riding in large hunter classes. You want every judge to see you each time you go around, without being too close to them and without getting covered up or stuck on the rail. I also think details like perfect braids are very important in hunter. It adds to the overall picture and helps to give a crisp look.

STEPHANIE SAGE WALKER Sage Performance Horses Collinsville, TX What is it about the hunter horse that attracted you to the discipline?

I started out riding hunter/jumpers as a kid. So, hunter in the Arabians was always a natural choice for me. I love the large class sizes and the depth of competition.

Who is your favorite hunter horse not owned by you? Why? Vivienne LR+++//. She was always willing and fun to ride at home and a blast to show. She was equally as wonderful to watch be shown. A big, beautiful mare with a long round neck, very rolling stride, quiet tail and happy demeanor.

Where is your favorite place to show in Hunter Pleasure? Wendell Arena in Scottsdale. It is just this big, wide open space and allows you to show your horses to the best of their ability.

Why do you show in hunter pleasure vs. other disciplines? I show hunter because I worked for the best hunter trainer there is for many years and she taught me so much, I grew to absolutely love it. I do enjoy the other disciplines as well, and have shown in them since I was a kid, just not as much, as I have shown in the hunter recently.

purchased him. Bred by Tim and Marty Shea, “Goldd” is by Afire Bey V and out of

Brassmis, making him a full brother to one of the most prestigious performance horses in the industry, Afires Heir, and a shining example of the Varian dynasty of great sires.

Fire and Goldd has already proven himself as a sire, having a list of National, Regional and Class A winning performance progeny, including but not limited to: Barcelona BF (2018 U.S. National Champion Arabian English Futurity), Five Starr, Go For The Goldd, Hero DGL, Goldd Fever and Goldd Starr, as well as Morgan’s own Goldd Standard (2-time Reserve National Champion, AEPA Futurity section winner/Top Ten and multi-regional champion in several divisions). Mare owners across the board are delighted with their babies, all of whom have Goldd’s signature long, hooky neck, correct conformation, laid-back shoulder and smooth body, not to mention his outstanding temperament. These ingredients are the recipe for success as a performance breeding stallion, and Goldd has them in spades.

Morgan and Renee have been involved in the Arabian horse industry for over two decades and have been clients of Dwane Hankins for over 10 years. They credit Dwane with urging them to purchase Goldd and negotiating the transaction that has given this amazing stallion his own spotlight and pedestal.

Goldd’s journey to Ocala began when Renee and Dwane surprised Morgan with Goldd Standard (“Digger”) in December 2017.

Morgan fell in love with his size, beauty, talent and temperament, as well as his sense of humor. This love affair led her to investigate his sire, and she quickly realized that Fire and Goldd’s progeny are all amazingly talented, beautiful and trainable. Thus began the fateful discussions with the Sheas which led to Goldd leaving Michigan for the long van ride to Ocala, Florida, where he resides with Dwane at his Colonial Downs Training Center, along with Goldd Standard and his 3-year-old daughter Glitter And Goldd (x Stylish Contessa,

by Undulata’s Nutcracker).

“Fire and Goldd puts an outstanding neck, body and disposition on every one of his babies,” says Renee. “We would love to own them all, but that would deprive everyone else of the right to have as much fun as we are having with ours!” Morgan adds, “His rich chestnut coat is as shiny as a new penny and all the chrome trim is the cherry on top! But Fire and Goldd is more than just visually stunning; he is very kind and sweet with an easy-going temperament. He loves attention and always has a sparkle in his eye. He is not arrogant, and his babies all have his excellent temperament.”

Renee says she loves everything about Goldd, but if she had to sum him up in one word, it would be—charisma. “Goldd knows he’s great and yet he’s kind to those around him. He’s totally without conceit but he certainly knows who he is. Fire and Goldd has all the charisma you could wish for! He knows he’s beautiful too, and passes on his stunning type, talent and ultimate winning personality to each and every one of his babies. Who doesn’t want Goldd to go with their roses?”

When Morgan talks to other owners of Fire and Goldd offspring, they too, are head over heels for them and all have the same

compliments of their foals for being intelligent, talented, kind, easy to work with, and having great necks. Although Fire and Goldd has never been shown, he consistently sires English division winners, regardless of the broodmare’s bloodlines. He has been bred to mares from a variety of great performance bloodlines with exceptional results each time, and for a stallion who has had limited promotion, his statistics are incredible.

When it comes to the future of their own breeding program, mother and daughter team plan to remain relatively small, with Fire and Goldd, and a western stallion who will make his show ring debut in the next year and will have babies on the ground this year. Their goal is to offer discerning mare owners the opportunity to breed to a stallion who consistently passes on his outstanding attributes that are perfectly suited for the amateur who wants a jaw-dropping, show-stopping horse that they can run and ride successfully. Morgan and Renee believe that amateur owners are the backbone of the performance industry and, as amateurs themselves, appreciate a horse that can win in the halter arena and go on to perform in a variety of English division classes. Outstanding quality is their goal, and from the look of things, Fire and Goldd will make an even bigger impact now that he has his own throne. Morgan and Renee are excited about Fire and Goldd’s Region 12 Spotlight debut and look forward to enjoying others’ successes with his babies. Derby D erby D Day ay Welcome Region 12 Spotlight Right Holders and Participants, The Region 12 Spotlight Board of Directors, Officers and volunteers are preparing another lineup of outstanding stallions for our 13th Annual Region 12 Spotlight Futurity Auction. We hope you will join us Thursday evening, May 9th, for this memorable event to celebrate our beautiful Arabian Horse. Offspring from previously nominated Arabian Stallions will have the opportunity to compete for prestigious titles in a variety of disciplines and an available prize pool of $182,954.00.

The Board of Directors would like to announce several improvements to the program which are expected to provide a better event atmosphere the night of the auction and enhance participation in the program.

• We will continue the online auction prior to the live auction. Only stallions that reach a bid of at least $1,000 will be presented for bid at the Thursday evening live event. At the conclusion of the live auction, those stallions that didn’t go to the live auction, will be back on-line for an additional 10 days before closing the bidding.

• This year’s live event will be held in the Beef and Dairy Barn. Moving to the alternate site allows the event planners more time to set up and begin the social hour at the designated time without delays.

• The BOD has adopted a new auction rule to benefit our program. This change has been asked for by many Spotlight participants throughout the years to put our program in line with other breeding programs in the U.S. AMENDMENT TO THE REGION Xll SPOTLIGHT AUCTION RULES, ADOPTED NOVEMBER 27th, 2018.

I. RULES FOR THE AUCTION AND SUBSEQUENT NOMINATIONS D. AUCTION BREEDING #6. EFFECTIVE AT THE 2019 SPOTLIGHT FUTURITY AUCTION AND GOING FORWARD, any stallion breeding purchased at the auction, or online auction, may be used the year of purchase provided that the entire purchase price has been paid in full the night of the auction or at the time of purchase. Further, use of the breeding the year of purchase must be approved by the nominating Stallion Owner. It is the breeding purchaser’s responsibility to confirm stallion availability if it is their intent to use the breeding the year of purchase. The Spotlight Futurity makes no claims or guarantee of stallion availability the immediate year of purchase. Should a stallion not be available the year of purchase, the breeding buyer’s financial responsibility to the Spotlight Futurity remain as stated in the other rules of the program. If a stallion breeding is used the year of purchase, the stallion owner Auction Certificate and breeding may be used the year of purchase as well, but only if the auction breeding purchaser utilizes the year of purchase option.

Amendment #6 to the AUCTION BREEDING RULES does not change any other rules of the program concerning nominations or payback of prize monies. Auction monies will remain with the original year no matter the year of breeding use.

APPROACHING THE LEGAL CLIFF …

SCALING IT OR FALLING OVER ITS EDGE!

BY DICK ADAMS Most legal issues involving the equine industry are mediated or arbitrated to settlement before they go to trial. The threat of a costly and encumbered trial is a strong incentive to settle. But very few legal issues actually are determined to have equal value to both sides. The legally ethical quality of each side’s position can be mitigated to either side of the line of equilibrium.

So, if most settlements are reached at a compromised position between the two conflicting parties, how can you move the settlement to a more favorable position?

There are two very important aspects to achieving a favorable legal result: 1. Acquire The Services Of An Excellent Attorney. It is much more important to have an excellent attorney than an equine attorney!

Simply being familiar with horses does not necessarily give an attorney an advantage. In fact, most equine attorneys fail to understand the nuances that can, when developed, improve an important position. Most settlements are determined by the strength and quality of the discovery process and an attorney’s quality of pleadings, motions, affidavits and depositions. An excellent attorney will actually “control” the judges’ administration of the “Rule of Law.” An excellent expert will provide a formidable and irrefutable “text book” of case-supporting facts.

This is very important, because litigation is not a debate in a philosophy class! Its presentation is not philosophical, it is controversial! A trial is a judicial contest between lawyers where a given situation, and its facts, are interpreted in various ways by the opposing parties’ attorneys; each counsel attempting to persuade the judge or jury that justice must be on the side of their client.

2. Acquire The Services Of An Excellent Arabian Horse EXPERT. I have worked with attorneys who had no serviceable knowledge of the equine industry but were excellent legalists/litigators. I have worked with attorneys who had significant backgrounds with horses and, because they were from another breed domain, their approach was flawed. I have worked with attorneys who had knowledge of the Arabian horse industry/community but did not have the practical experience to understand the impressionable nuance of the domain.

A highly skilled litigator can become much more formidable if he/she is assisted by an excellent Arabian horse industry minded expert.

What Qualifies An Arabian Horse Expert?

•

Great Experience ... in all major categories of the economic, socioeconomic and emotional aspects of the Arabian breed. How successful has the self declared “expert” been in the various areas of applicable involvement?

A better than layman understanding of the legal process. How easily can the expert’s knowledge be effectively utilized (by the attorney) into the legal proceedings? An excellent expert for litigation will be efficient and accurate in developing an approach with facts and precedent that will support your position.

A high understanding of the litigation process. Most actions of litigation are entered abruptly as a last resort. Often the Plaintiff/Defendant is unaware of the process and does not diligently prepare and proceed.

The process gives each side certain deadlines to submit discovery and experts. Start strong and you will end stronger.

Fact: Most Litigation Ends In Settlement Before Trial

Judges push heavily against fallacious actions and toward settlement.

A settlement can be 50/50 or swing to either side, depending on the development and credibility of the case. A settlement can either be mitigated or arbitrated.

The significant difference between mitigation and arbitration: During the mitigation process, either side can “walk out” at any point. Often the Mitigator compromises (simply) to keep the parties in the process.

Arbitration commits and binds both parties to the arbitrator’s final decision.

Note: One of the most frequently asked questions asked of an equine expert by an opposing attorney in deposition or in a trial is, “Is that your opinion?” The attorney is attempting to suggest that the expert’s answer to a question was based on his/her subjective belief. Simply because an expert has credibility within his/her domain, does not mean that he/she can or will produce a totally objective response.

Final Point

If a case does go to trial, it will be tried before either a Judge (bench trial) or a Jury (jury trial).

If the case goes before a Judge (bench trial), the pre-trial work is critical! The judge will be the sole finder of fact, and ruler on matters of both law and procedure. The judge decides the credibility of the evidence (relative to laws and rules of procedure) that will be allowed and presented at the trial and, also, what is allowed during the trial. In most cases, the presiding judge will have no or little expertise within the Arabian horse domain, so will be influenced by the presentations of the pre-trial processes of both parties. Excellent preparation will determine which side has the most control in the settlement process.

If the case goes before a Jury, your attorney will have two objectives: to best position your case within the judge’s concepts of the “Rule of Law,” and within that perimeter, convince the jury that your position is the most appropriate. ■

Over

the last several days, I’ve had an opportunity to read many of the beautiful tributes to Dick Ames and the impact he had on so many lives including his adoring family, his employees, his home state, a University and, of course, the Arabian horse community—a larger than life man that left a larger than life legacy. The words that resonate are inspiring and impactful.

There are so many lessons to be learned about the way this man lived his life, but on a personal note, perhaps the biggest lesson I learned from Dick was observing the special relationship he had with his beautiful daughter, Lara. I’ve tried to model this special bond with my own daughter, Lesta … common interests, in and out of the horse world, mutual respect and unconditional love!

We will all miss Dick’s presence, his compassion and the passion he brought to all of his interests. I’ll miss his sense of humor and walking by the Cedar Ridge set-up at the shows as he swept the aisle, always taking the time to say hello and asking how you were doing. If you were lucky, you got to hear his latest joke!

The Arabian show horse business is often referred to as an industry; I prefer to call it a community. A diverse community of many people from many backgrounds who are deeply connected to the magic, courage and talents of these remarkable horses that capture our hearts and imagination. Along this journey of being a horseman are lifelong relationships and friendships that I am eternally grateful for. And on this day I am reminded of the impact Dick Ames had on OUR Community - Our Town!

Cynthia Cubbage (1976-2019) Cynthia was an ardent supporter of the Arabian horse. She trained horses and riders who enjoyed riding casually, as well as those who were serious horse show participants. Her Arabian horse show season was always full, including the Youth and Sport Horse Nationals for many years. Among the USEF Horse of the Year winners and National Champions she trained were DA Dorado, No Diplomacy, Have Another and Have Enough.

Cynthia loved her profession and was so proud of her students as they progressed. She had incredible patience and a special knack for teaching, children and adult amateurs alike. She believed that the horse-rider match was crucial to one’s enjoyment and success, but above all, horses were meant to be fun!

Cynthia will be missed by all who knew her. Her presence (with that trainer voice), blond hair, and trademark visor, will be so missed by all who knew her.

Cynthia is survived by her daughter, Lucy, mother Linda Schon, many extended family members, and several very close clients and friends.

Monogramm (1985-2019) Some horses are destined for greatness; changing the history of breeding by creating offspring who extraordinarly excel. These horses are rare and we are blessed when they are born and given the opportunity to pass on their greatness. On the 23rd of April 1985, one of those legendary horses was born in Oregon, USA, when a chestnut, charismatic colt came into the world. His breeders, Dick and Kay Patterson, had high hopes for this foal as he was sired by their homebred chief-sire Negatraz (Bask x Negotka), and out of the Russian-bred mare with a stellar production record in Russia, Monogramma (Knippel x Monopolia). The colt, named Monogramm, was sold to Bill, Meredith and Shilo Bishop as a yearling.

Named U.S. National Reserve Champion Futurity Colt in October 1988, it was there in Louisville, Kentucky, that Director Jawarowski of Michalów State Stud in Poland, and Inspector of Horse Breeding in Poland, Izabella Pawelec-Zawadzka, saw Monogramm for the first time. They were both impressed, and Director Jawarowski knew that this was the colt he had been waiting for to bring back; not only the blood of Bask (Witraz x Bałałajka), but also the valuable blood of the great mare Mammona (Ofir x Krucica). They approached the Bishops about the possibility of leasing Monogramm and in October 1992, Monogramm was on his way to Poland for two years.

Monogramm´s first foal crop at Michalów born in 1993, exceeded all expectations with offspring like Ekstern, Ganges, Zagrobla, Eskalopka, Palestyna, Kordelas and Georgia. The impact of his offspring could be seen at the Polish National Show in 1995 when they dominated the Yearling Fillies class; all were blown away by these beautiful, great moving fillies. Monogramm added so much to the Michalów breeding program, and today, most Polish-bred horses at the state studs have Monogramm in their pedigree.

“I will never forget my first meeting with the American stallion everyone was talking about,” shares Anette Mattsson. “It was in August 1993, and I totally fell in love when I walked into his stall at Michalów and he turned his beautiful head to me. He was unique and nothing I had ever seen before. I wanted to meet him again, but it was not until 20 years later when the opportunity arose to visit the Bishops. The person instrumental in getting Monogramm to Poland, my dear friend Izabella PawelecZawadzka, had not seen him either since his time in Poland, so it was a very emotional meeting for all of us.”

Monogramm passed away quietly on the 16th of January 2019, at the age of 34 in the loving care of Shilo Bishop. Thank you, Monogramm, for passing on your greatness to your amazing offspring; a true legend that surpassed all expectations and created greatness beyond all visions.
