No matter what continent we call home, no matter how disparate our cultures or how divided our politics, we are fortunate to share that most potent of all equalizers, the Arabian horse! Our love for the breed unites us in a heartfelt way that transcends artificial boundaries to create a global community with the horse at the center. It is not uncommon to see people standing together, leaning on the rail as they preview the horses in the holding ring at a major competition, one dressed in traditional desert robes and the other in the latest fashion of the West. People who might disagree on serious matters can stand together in their appreciation of a magnificent stallion or their dedication to the protection of a threatened bloodline. An international panel of judges from diverse countries can be in complete agreement on how a class should be scored. We have a common eye for a good horse. We also appreciate what the Arabian horse brings to our lives. It brings its timeless beauty and incredible heart along with the special human/ horse connection so unique to our breed. It brings us into contact with people who would otherwise remain strangers and broadens our horizons in ways we have never thought possible or even imagined. As the show season builds toward a climax, we will see the flags of many nations flying in Aachen and hear many national anthems played to honor the winners in Paris. May those reminders of our diversity continue to symbolize the building of understanding and cultural connections that are a strength of the breed. Personally, I am deeply grateful for the enduring friendships that I have made with people all over the world and look forward to forming new friendships rooted in the Arabian horse.

AT

Morion’s Gift

by Theresa Cardamone

As Wahaj AT (Morion x Wieża Róż) trotted into the show arena at Chantilly, his powerful, cadenced trot spoke unmistakably of his predominantly Polish bloodlines. The bay Wahaj is from one of the first homebred crops of Qatari breeder Dana Al-Meslemani’s Al Thumama Stud. He combines animated motion with correct conformation and true Arabian type. Wahaj AT was bred to be a herd sire for the young farm, a role he seems destined to play to perfection. The judges in Chantilly would seem to agree. That day at the 2018 AHO World Cup, Wahaj AT was named the Gold Champion Yearling Colt. Both Wahaj’s sire and dam are dear to Dana, who developed an affinity for the Arabian horse while taking riding lessons at the Al Shaqab equestrian complex as a child. When she began to build her herd, one of the mares

Dana and her stud manager Hilke Cécile De Bruycker purchased, was the 2009 Polish National Gold Champion Junior Mare Wieża Róż. Bred by Michalów State Stud, she was offered at the Pride of Poland auction during the summer of 2015 where Dana placed her winning bid. Wieża Róż is a daughter of undefeated World Champion Ekstern (Monogramm x Ernestyna, by Piechur), and the beautifully bred Wieza Babel, herself from the tail female line of the exotic Polish and United States National Champion Mare, Wizja. While attending the 2014 European Championships, Dana and Hilke were dazzled by Michalów’s young stallion Morion, who is a deep bay son of Wieżarina

A HT Abroad

| 32 | Fall 2018

Kahil Al Shaqab and out of the Ekstern daughter Mesalina (who has two lines to Monogramm, one through her sire and a second through her granddam, Martynika). Morion had previously earned Polish National Champion Junior Colt, was named European Silver Champion Yearling Colt and then went on to be World Silver Champion Yearling Colt in 2014, along with several other titles. The word was out that several farms were showing interest in acquiring Morion, but to no avail. Nevertheless, Dana and Hilke approached Michalów Director Jerzy Bialabok to propose leasing the popular colt. Although they had not become acquainted with each other before, Director Bialabok believed that Morion would be in good hands with

Morion the Al Thumama team, and a two-year lease was struck in October 2015. It was a dream come true. Morion was placed under the care of trainer Tom Oben, who was to show him under the Al Thumama flag at the World Championships in Paris just a few weeks later. While their hopes were high, the likelihood of winning the top spot was far from certain. It was a milestone for the farm and a truly magical moment when Morion and Tom Oben won the Gold World Championship Junior Colt title, a first for the horse, a first for the trainer, and a first for Al Thumama Stud. Dana and Hilke enjoyed the glow of success over the winter, looking forward to the 2016 breeding season. They knew that their time with Morion was limited and were hopeful that he would leave them with a son to carry his blood forward. Therefore, they were particularly excited to see the result of the crossing between Wieża Róż and Morion and were overjoyed when she produced Wahaj AT in 2017. Wahaj was the best gift that Morion could have given them.

Wieża Róż

As he matures, Wahaj AT will be given the opportunity to propel his father’s legacy forward in the breeding shed, just as he is doing in the show ring. To prove that his quality is no fluke, Wahaj can point to his 2018 full sister, Wiezarina AT, another exceptional example of the Morion/Wieża Róż cross. It is a potent blend of power and grace that will see Wahaj AT through to many more championship moments for Al Thumama Stud.

40 Years Of Flaxman Arabians Helen van Nes What are your future hopes for your breeding program? The future for our breeding program is based on modern show lines such as WH Justice, QR Marc, Enzo, Om el Shahmaan and Kabsztad. Our straight Egyptian breeding program is based on classic SE lines using stallions such as Fa Earl Grey (Fa Zain x Flaxman’s Nakaana, by Hassan “S”), GH Meknes (Mudassir B Mehaman x Al Kadaira, by Shaikeel), and Black Diamond LDA (Thee Desperado x Alia Amal LDA).

Which Arabian horse book would you recommend? “The Classic Arabian Horse,” by Peter Upton. An excellent book for new breeders to read the standard of the breed. Good explanations with drawings of horses and different types, etc.

If you had 30 minutes of free-time, how would you use it? Between my broodmares and foals in the field, joyfully watching to see how the foals play with each other.

What legacy do you hope to leave behind for the breed? Flaxman Arabians breeds excellent quality, typey horses, with good legs, movement and character. Great show horses, sport horses and breeding horses for future generations to enjoy.

What one piece of advice would you give to beginning Arabian horse breeders? I would advise young breeders to select good pedigrees with good dam lines; horses with good legs, movement and nice type. I would also suggest listening to older breeders’ philosophies of breeding Arabian horses from the past and for the future.

An Interview with

Helen van Nes

If you could trade lives with one breeder for a breeding season, who would it be and why? I do not want to trade my life with any other breeder. I think my life is amazing with all these lovely horses here at our farm. I enjoy our newborn foals every year.

How big an influence is current fashion for you when making breeding decisions? The market requests that you go with the flow, so yes, we also use stallions which are in “fashion,” and sometimes that brings us a surprisingly good result. We also use our own stallions, but for export, we need to use outside stallions also.

If you could go back in time once, and change a single thing, what would it be? I wish I had some frozen semen of our Egyptian Prince son El Masri Amir (out of Dars Hideeba); he was such an excellent sire.

How has the Arabian horse enriched your life? I was raised with Arabians in my teens; they have become a big part of my life. Some of them we consider family members.

What does it mean to you to see the next generation of your family involved in Arabian horses? We are very proud to have a son who wants to become a professional handler in the future. He is 20 years old and still in college, so still has a lot to learn, but improves every season. Koen learned a lot from our resident trainer Peter Wilms, and from Fernando Poli, with whom he stayed with for a whole summer to learn more about training and conditioning. It is nice to see him perform at shows like: UKIAHS in Addington with his geldings, in Aachen at the All Nations Cup, at the Belgian Nationals in Lier, The Tulip Cup in Ermelo, The Arabian Horse weekend in St. Oedenrode, The Kauber Platte Show in Kaub am Rhein in Germany, and many others, including the upcoming European Championships in Lier in Belgium this year.

What is your breeding philosophy? Why do you breed horses? It is a challenge every season to breed that perfect foal. Until now, we have bred a few very special ones by modern show lines. We breed to create that perfect combination and watch the result being born.

Do you still breed with the lines of your foundation horses? Which is you favourite dam line and sire line? We no longer focus on the bloodlines of the horses we started with. We now focus on the modern show lines and what new combinations we can try out. Our SE breeding program focuses on Koheilan strain horses.

40 Years Of Jadem Arabians

Christine Jamar-Demeersseman

What are your future hopes for your breeding program? My ultimate dream is to find or breed to a stallion which I can use to cover my own mares. A real challenge these days.

With Jadem Arabians horses having won on the highest level, is there anything left to achieve? From the first show in 1980 until recently, we have always achieved great success in the ring. A golden vision, hard work and a good team at the right moment means gold. My goal has always been to improve my breeding program and to produce top level foals, but also, to grant them the best care as possible while growing up, until they reach adulthood.

Which Arabian horse book would you recommend? I have read so many books about Arabian horses. My favorites were those about the history of bloodlines—they all had something interesting. The best book I would recommend for beginning breeders is “The Arabian Horse,” by Peter Upton.

If you had 30 minutes of free time, how would you use it? I love to play with my dogs, look for wild mushrooms in the forest, or read an old book about Arabian horses.

What legacy do you hope to leave behind for the breed? I hope that the genes of my horses, that have been selected for many generations, can be useful to other stud farms.

What one piece of advice would you give to beginning Arabian horse breeders? Select good broodmares with interesting pedigrees. They can produce good show horses and in turn, may become future broodmares themselves. The most difficult part is to choose a stallion to cover your mares. The stallions must correct any faults the mares have to improve type and movement. The goal is to make a homogenous breed. Try to keep all your horses as one family. Keep your ideal horse in mind and try to work toward it, with your own passion and feelings. Try to listen as much as possible to different successful breeders.

Christine Jamar - Demeersseman Jadem Arabians

If you could trade lives with one breeder for a breeding season, who would it be and why? I would love to swap with the breeding manager of Michalów Stud. Many beautiful mares have resulted from a successful breeding program for so many years. It would be a great challenge to find the perfect stallions to continue their success.

How big an influence is current fashion for you when making breeding decisions? If you like to win at the shows, you have to create horses that meet the standards of today’s ideal horse. This does not mean I won’t use classic stallions anymore to get back what we have lost, for example, long neck, good bodies and big eyes. This is my plan for next year.

If you could go back in time once, and change a single thing, what would it be? I would immediately start with pure Polish bloodlines. By using mixed bloodlines, I have lost years at the beginning of my career. My Polish mares come out of a breeding program, selected from more than 200 years. Nobody else in the Arabian horse world has ever achieved this.

How has the Arabian horse enriched your life? The Arabian horse is my life and my life is devoted to the Arabian horse. It is the most fascinating creature on earth for me. The history of the horse, their strong will and their courage, are aspects that make this horse so special. My horses make me happy. The birth of a foal is still, after all these years, so exciting. Seeing the broodmares with their foals outside gives me such a peaceful feeling. A never-ending dream!

30 Years Of Sax Arabians Reinhard and Monika Sax What are your future hopes for your breeding program? Continue our successful breeding program with our homebred Arabian horses. We wanted to breed an overall correct horse, which you can use for breeding or riding in many different ways. We hope to be able to continue breeding high quality horses that represent the Arabian breed and all their characteristics that make the Arabian horse so special!

Which Arabian horse book would you recommend? We get so many e-mails/newsletters and Facebook news these days, we do not read Arabian horse books anymore.

What one piece of advice would you give to beginning Arabian horse breeders? Never breed Arabian horses with the goal to make money. You should breed them for pleasure, with love and fervor!

If you could trade lives with one breeder for a breeding season, who would it be and why? To ask this question means you have not visited Sax Arabians. Our farm is located in lower Bavaria, in Peissing (one hour away from Munich, 30 minutes from the Munich airport). Monika and I are living here with our Arabian horses, some beautiful pieces of art by Fritz Koenig around us, as well our dogs and cats, geese, chickens and Peacocks. Let’s say I am a very lucky man. I live with Monika in our own little paradise, reason for never trading my life with another breeder.

How big an influence is current fashion for you when making breeding decisions? It’s not very big, but as a breeder, in case you like to present your breeding program at Arabian horse shows, you can’t ignore it. We have some very good stallions at stud, but from time to time, we go out to bring some new blood into our breeding program. Our success confirms that we made the right decision.

An Interview with

Reinhard and Monika Sax

It’s really funny. As a breeder, you always try to breed beautiful and correct horses. Each breeder tries to present the best breeding at Arabian horse shows; that’s what we do, over nearly 30 years. Some people come to the farm and say, “Are you only breeding show horses?” I look for a horse I can ride. We have to go out and show people who are interested in Arabian horses that each horse can also be ridden. We have to tell them that we go to shows to present our best bred horses as a breeder to be realized as a good breeder. Winning at an Arabian horse show does not mean we are just a breeder of “show horses.” When we as breeders don’t go anymore to an Arabian horse show to show our best, does it mean our breeding is not as good as before? It’s a cycle of an Arabian horse breeder. You have to go out and present your offspring and you have to be present, so new breeders and Arabian horse lovers can meet you and your home bred horses, to get noticed, and maybe get a photo or a short note in a magazine or in the news which are spread around the world! We found our own way. We invite breeders, riders, Arabian horse lovers and children to our farm. Sometimes we spend our time just with them in the stable or we present stallions and their offspring. Other times we show our broodmares and their foals, to present breeders our results. And at the same time, we can also present many ridden horses.

At our farm, breeders can see in some cases we have bred the mare with our homebred stallion and see the sire and dam with her foal at foot. Visitors can see the difference between the sire and dam and youngsters. This is not possible anymore in many other breeding stables! As a breeder, you must be very strong minded; you must find your own way and you must keep your mind and your eyes open! Breeding Arabian horses means also having a lot of luck, it doesn’t always happen; that’s normal … that’s life.

If you could go back in time once, and change a single thing, what would it be? Reinhard: I would want to be an architect, it’s something I admire a lot.

How has the Arabian horse enriched your life? Living in a natural environment with Arabian horses would enrich anybody’s life. Traveling and learning about different cultures was and is, extremely interesting for us.

2000

What does Professor Fritz Koenig mean to you as a breeder and as a lover of art? Fritz Koenig bred Nahbay. Nahbay was at our farm during the time Frank Spönle was working for us in 1992 or 1993. We recommended Fritz bring him in to our stable to train him for shows. Frank showed him successfully at several Arabian horse shows, as well as at the World Championship in Paris. Nahbay was World Champion – it was just amazing for all of us! We were very close with Fritz and Maria Koenig, and have had many interesting and unforgettable times together, with their Arabian horses, friends and, of course, his amazing, unique and extremely beautiful art!

Reinhard and Monika Sax

Reinhard in February 2017, wrote in the condolence book of Professor Fritz Koenig the following: “Das Schöne in der Einfachheit zu verstehen, hat uns verbunden. Die Liebe zum Pferd, zur Kunst und vieles mehr …” “Understanding the beauty of simplicity has united us and the love of the horse, the art and much more …”

Have you ever searched for a straight Egyptian stallion to be the new Aswan for Russian Arabian horses? Yes, from time to time we look for a straight Egyptian stallion. For us, Khidar, a son of Ansata Sinan, did an amazing job! I know, Khidar is not a straight Egyptian, but I think the look came from Ansata Sinan. We also had Kyro KA for one season at our farm, and we bred a few mares a long time ago to BJ Thee Mustafa. Also by Windsprees Mirage, we have an amazing beautiful black lady at our farm, named Marni; one of our best broodmares. Straight Egyptian bloodlines can be, for sure, a very good combination to our breeding program. If we see a stallion we really like, we will try with one of our best broodmares. Most of the time it has worked well.

How did you reach the decision to introduce other than Russian bloodlines into your breeding program? We came home from the Arabian horse show in Wels. While there, the stallion Essteem was presented by a very nice, young woman with a big smile on her face. It was a fantastic presentation and we were very impressed by Essteem.

Why didn’t you stay with a Russian breeding program? Essteema was definitely the best result we’ve bred after 10 years breeding straight Russian. Gino Mac Gillavry

Photographer and Equine Supplies Passion became a profession What started out years ago as a hobby, is now a profession. Photography, an eye for detail, the ability to capture the souls of people and animals; it is a gift that distinguishes Gino from other colleagues. Each photograph telling its own story, freezing that special moment in time Gino has covered many special events: VIP celebrity events in The Netherlands for magazines; weddings, national football matches, Formula 1, sailing Regattas, parties, fairs, etc. With his love of horses, it was not difficult to capture the beauty of these animals when he was asked to take pictures at the racetrack and an International Jumping competition a couple of years ago. By coincidence, Arabian horses became part of his live. Fascinated by this special creature, Gino was lucky to be able to travel to many shows in Europe, Qatar, Egypt and Oman, capturing the true beauty of the Arabian horse and its owners. Being around horse people, visiting stud farms and talking to owners, breeders, riders and trainers in the Gulf region, made him realize there is a demand for high quality, yet reasonably priced horse supplies. AMERICAN ARABIAN HORSE BREEDING Past, Present & Future

T

Throughout history, the lives of ancient people and Arabian horses are intertwined. The unique traits of the Arabian horse endeared them to their desert breeders and inspired others to travel great distances and endure tremendous hardships in order to find the amazing horses they had heard of in legends, seen depicted in art, and dreamed of. In Early American history, Arabian horses were very rare. Few Americans were familiar with the breed, but the Chicago World’s Fair, in 1893, changed that. A group of 45 horses, along with their Bedouin caretakers and supporters arrived from Turkey and its protectorates. After the fair closed, the Bedouins returned home, however, much to their dismay, their horses remained and were auctioned off. Among those horses sold were the mare Nedjme, foaled 1887, from the Kehilan-Ajuz tribe and the stallion Obeyran, foaled 1889, from the Seglawi-Obeyran tribes. The tremendous interest created by the Arabian horses displayed at the fair resulted in the establishment of the Arabian Horse Club of America in 1908. In fact, Nedjme and Obeyran are the first and second horses listed on the Arabian Horse Registry of America.

Some of the people who saw the horses at the fair were inspired to travel to the desert to find and purchase these incredible creatures for themselves. Wealthy and influential Americans who were captivated by the exotic beauty, fiery charisma and sweet tempers of the Arabian horses, made their way to Europe and the Middle East to find Arabian horses to establish their own breeding programs. It was the beginning of a great movement of importaimporta tions to the United States. If we were to create a time-line of Arabian horse importations, we would find horses from around the world. Not only is the United States a country of immigrants; our Arabian horses are as well. Crabbet Stud of England supplied many early American breeders with breeding stock in the early 1900s, including the famous stallions Ibn Mahuss, and Astraled, as well as the mares Shibine, Antika and Ferdisa. The year 1932 was an exceptional year for Arabian horse importations to America from many regions, including the stallion Raffles. Another waterwater shed importation in 1932 were seven Egyptian horses which included the stallion Fadl and the mare Maaroufa. The year 1934 saw the importation of the stallion Aire from Brazil, as well as horses from Saudi Arabi, and in 1937, the mares Maamouna from Egypt and Przepiorka from Poland. There was a break in importations during World War II, but later, in 1945, after the war ended, the United States GovGov ernment imported horses from Germany, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Bavaria and Poland. Perhaps the most famous war import was the famous stallion Witez II, who became a very influential sire in America.

A HT Abroad

| 3 | U.S.A. Breeders

There was a substantial increase in importations after the war, with horses such as the stallion Moktakhar arriving from Egypt in 1951, and later in 1965 and 1966, including the stallion Morafic, who founded a dynasty here in America and whose influence is global. 1958 saw the importation of three notable yearlings selected from the EAO: Ansata Ibn Halima, Bint Zafarana and Bint Mabrouka. These horses and their offspring became champions, champion producers and foundation stock for breeders throughout the world and are found in the pedigrees of many of today’s straight Egyptian and Egyptian-related champions. Poland and Russia were the next countries to influence American breeders, thanks to the genius of their dedicated directors and inspectors. Breeders from around the world - including America - looked to Poland for its prized Arabian horses. In 1961, notable importations included the Polish mares Naganka, Bachantka and Ostrega. Naganka proved her worth when she produced Bay El Bay, the predecessor to a prolific sire line through his son Huckleberry Bey, sire of the all-time leading sire of the breed, Afire Bey V. March of 1963 saw a group of horses imported from Poland, which included one of the most important and influential sires of the breed ‌ Bask, sire of 1,051 registered offspring and 35,685 second generation offspring. It is rare today to find an Arabian horse that does not have Bask in its pedigree, except for straight Egyptian, Spanish, Crabbet, or horses with pedigrees that combine those lines. Over the years, horses imported from Poland have made great contributions and had a profound influence on American breeding programs.

In 1976, a large number of Russian Arabian horses arrived in America, including the mares Nahodka and Nariadnaia, her son Nariadni, and the stallions Napitok and Pristan. In January 1978, the lengendary stallions Muscat and Padron arrived. The mares Madonna, Monogramma, Bandola, Kilifa, and Penalba followed, as well as the stallions Salon, Tamerlan, Poznan, Gokaart, and many others that greatly contributed to the development of the American horses of today. Monogramma became the dam of Monogramm, and the mare Kilifa was bred to Tamerlan, resulting in the daughter, Kilika who was later bred to Padron and produced the legendary sire Padrons Psyche. Clearly, the importance and influence of these American importations cannot be overstated. Because of them, we have the notable horses of today. As American breeding programs developed through the use of imported horses, some began to create truly exceptional show and breeding horses. These new “American horses sparked interest from breeders in other parts of the world, including South America. Brazil in particular, became a huge market for American horses. Brazilian breeders purchased many important and influential stallions and mares to establish or enhance their programs. The results they achieved with their American imports are amazing. Many Brazilian horses with American ancestors have now been imported to the United States and are contributing their unique style and quality. One area where American breeders differ from breeders in other parts of the world is their commitment to producing performance horses. No where in the world is the versatility of the Arabian horse celebrated through diverse divisions of performance competion like

it is in the United States. Here in America, an ideal Arabian must be beautiful, correct, athletic, good natured and have a sound mind so that it can be successful in both halter and performance. These qualities are universal and are of great value to all breeders. American breeders welcome the opportunity to showcase their horses at competitions, open houses, farm tours and other exciting events that take place throughout the year. They take pride in their efforts to breed not just an American horse, but an international horse, one that reflects the best qualities of its ancestors and has the potential to win in show rings around the world and contribute to other breeders’ programs as well.

This American Breeders Brochure illustrates the symbiotic relationship that exists between breeders around the world, as well as the important contributions by horses of the past and their connection to current breeding programs. It also serves to recognize those breeders whose vision, sense of adventure and passion for the Arabian horse has not only contributed to the evolution and development of the breed, they provide the means for breeders of today to create an even brighter future, one where we continue to learn and grow together while sharing our love of the Arabian horse.

ANTHEIA A RABIANS

One of the most picturesque and charming farms in Santa Ynez, California is Antheia Arabians, owned by Diane Brown. The property is an exquisite oasis filled with lush pastures, beautiful trees, flowers, and thoughtful touches to create a peaceful sanctuary. The name ‘Antheia Arabians’ is unusual and meaningful. “One morning, the name Antheia came to me,” shares Diane. “Antheia is the Greek goddess of gardens, flowers, springtime, human love and friendships. I realized it would be the perfect name for my farm and breeding program. My friend, Dr. Lahsen Fdail, gave me the name Ayn Al Ajab, which means ‘The Source of Wonder’ and it has become our motto. I’ve always wanted a farm that feels tranquil and offers both horses and humans a serene environment – I believe I have created a special place where we can all live in total harmony.” Diane’s goal is to breed the type of horse that she loves and wants to be with, “…a beautiful, physically correct, complete horse with a sound, trainable mind and a kind, friendly disposition that enjoys being around people.” Diane grew up riding Arabians, so she is naturally drawn A HT Abroad

to a beautiful horse that she can ride and enjoy. “For me, an Arabian horse has to be beautiful, balanced, and functional. It’s also imperative to me that my horses are happy doing what they’re asked to do. I first saw the Om El Arab horses over 30 years ago and I have followed them ever since. They consistently exemplify what I look for in an Arabian.” When taking a leap of faith to follow our dreams, it is wise to connect with people who have been successful in the same endeavor and whose example can be trusted. Diane had the good fortune to know one of the best breeders in history… “One of the greatest blessings in my life was to count Sigi Siller as one of my closest friends. There are so many things that Sigi taught me and I’m incredibly privileged to have been under her tutelage. She instilled in me the importance of having a strong vision of my ideal horse, and to breed true to that vision, regardless of fads, fashions, or show ring trends. Sigi also strongly encouraged me to follow my dreams and trust my gut feeling. Other important lessons she imparted were to keep assessing my horses honestly and realistically, and to give them

plenty of time to develop and mature. Today, my mentors are Sigi’s incredible daughter, Janina Merz, who is like my sister, and master horseman, Doug Dahmen. Both of them have a lifetime’s experience of Arabian horses, and their encouragement, advice, and guidance has been second to none.” Diane is a tiny boutique-style breeder who understands the wisdom of starting small with a few very high quality mares as her foundation. She currently has 14 Arabians. All of her foundation mares are from the Om El Arab breeding program and they are Diane’s treasures… Om El Beshayer (Om El Shahmaan x Om El Beladeena), Om El Shahrazad (Om El Al Azeem x Om El Shahmaandura), Om El Berenika (Om El Shahmaan x Om El Benedine), Om El Saia (Om El Bellissimo x Om El Saari), and Om El Bahara (Om El Bellissimo x Om El Baha Dream). year, Om El Beshayer had a beautiful filly by Al Ayal AA that will be will retained, and her gorgeous colt this year is by SMA Magic One. Next year, Diane is expecting foals by Jyar Meia Lua and Om El Beneditto. Diane says that what excites her most is sharing her passion for Arabian horses with others – the mark of a true breeder at heart. World Champion alpine ski racer, Lindsey Vonn, and the Red Bull Team, recently came to the farm for a magazine photo shoot. Lindsey rode Diane’s horse Om El Shaheed all that day. Diane’s heart was overflowing, “It was truly marvelous to watch Shaheed behave so impeccably whilst being surrounded by cameras and flashing lights, being ridden English and western, patiently cantering back and forth in front of the cameras, all the while his rider was wearing an enormous, billowing skirt. He thoroughly enjoyed all the attention and was the perfect ambassador for the Arabian breed. Each and every time I see my horses interact with people, especially children, and see how curious and loving they are, I’m reminded of why I’m moved by the magic of the Arabian horse and why I adore them so much.” | 9 | U.S.A. A Family Rooted in Greatness... ARIA ELITA is regarded by most who see her as one of the most beautiful mares in the world; a true treasure. Tracy White and Ken and Joanne White, are owners of Arabian Horse Futures and Aria Elita. Ken White shared their feeling about this elegant, refined mare, “Beauty is not often accompanied by a nice, friendly personality. However, in Elita’s case, she may be considered one of the sweetest horses ever, which adds depth to her charm and appeal.” In 2010, Aria Elita was bred to National Champion DA Valentino. This tall, exquisite mare produced two embryos resulting in the filly LR Valita and Canadian National Reserve Champion Futurity Colt, Elite AF. In 2013, Elita produced the beautiful Estelita, sired by double U.S. National Champion Trussardi, by Stival and out of the El Shaklan daughter, Precious As Gold, also the dam of legendary sire Versace. The following year, a full sibling was born, MCF Tru Elation, who became Scottsdale International Champion, Regional Champion and Canadian National Top Ten Mare. MCF Tru Elation, owned by Antonette Ginochio, bears a remarkable resemblance to her legendary grand dam, Precious As Gold. In 2017, Aria Elita produced the amazing colt, Khalif AF, sired by World Champion Kahil Al Shaqab. Within months, Khalif AF won his first show title: Arabian National Breeder Finals Supreme Gold Champion Weanling Colt. Today, Aria Elita is in foal to U.S. National Champion Namous Al Shahania for a 2019 foal. Aria Elita has proven herself in competition and as an exceptional champion producer. Her daughter, Estelita, is following her mother’s example and becoming a world-class broodmare. In 2017, Estelita had a beautiful filly, Marquessa AF, sired by the World Champion Stallion QR Marc. With her extreme quality, exotic type, near flawless conformation, and show horse charisma, Marquessa AF will be wearing roses very soon. The success of the Estelita and QR Marc cross inspired the Whites to repeat the

CEDAR RIDGE FARM Visitors to Cedar Ridge Farm in Jordan, Minnesota, are captivated as much by the beauty of the farm as the national champion Arabian and Half-Arabian horses that have lived there since 1968. Both the farm and owners, Dick and Lollie Ames, are celebrating their landmark 50th Golden Anniversary this year. Together with their daughter, Lara Ames, they breed and raise some of the top halter and performance horses in the country. The Ames family love all disciplines of competition, but specialize in breeding English and reining horses. The passion for Arabian and Half-Arabian horses extends to other branches of the Ames family tree with several members of their extended family also being involved in breeding and showing. So, when they get together at a show or other event, there’s always a lot fun and laughter. Cedar Ridge’s breeding and training facility currently houses around 100 horses of all ages. With a history that spans half a century, the Ames have developed a breeding program focused on producing horses that meet or exceed their expectations of classic Arabian type, high quality, natural athleticism, and intelligence. Over the years, they have been fortunate to own and breed many incredible mares. They are all important because as all successful breeders agree, it takes good mares to produce good babies. Some of Cedar Ridge Farm’s most special foundation mares include: Gai

Fawn (Gai Parada x Gai-Gay-Ferzona); Ames Mirage (Brass x Afire Inmy Eyes), dam of two National Champion sons; the incredible Toi Jabaska (Matoi x MC Jabaskolee), 10-time National Champion and dam of four-time National Champion Noble Supreme CRF; the Polish import Perfirka (Gazal Al Shaqab x Perforacja), U.S. National Champion Mare; and Julietta Ames (Afires Heir x Toi Jabaska) to name just a few. Stallion selection is always an exciting challenge for the Ames family. Their decisions begin with the type of mare they are breeding and whether it is a halter or performance horse. They evaluate the mare’s past production and then review the pedigrees of both the mare and the potential stallions; they also review the stallion’s show record and production record. When it comes to breeding for halter, the Ames keep an open mind and although they often choose sires with proven records, they also are willing to take a risk on an emerging young stallion. For their reining horse breeding program, the choice of a stallion is quite simple – they utilize their own stallion, Scottsdale and U.S. National Champion

TA Mozart (Kordelas x Marieta), a sire of champion purebreds and Half-Arabians. Although Dick Ames is an accomplished horseman of many years, with national championships in English and pleasure driving, he also loves the challenging sport of reining. He has turned the tables in this breeding area and has selected mares he believes will cross well with TA Mozart to produce potential reining champions. TA Mozart is a highly respected sire and he stands at Cedar Ridge Farm and is available to outside mares. With such an active breeding program, Cedar Ridge has become regarded as a source for the highest quality Arabian and Half-Arabian horses in the country. Often trainers and potential clients will come to them for a specific type of horse. The Ames family is always been at the forefront of marketing for the industry. They actively market their horses through their website and social media. In past years, they held some of the most successful public auctions, reaching record-breaking prices. Many young halter and performance prospects sold at these auctions have become super successful, mega superstars.

This year, Cedar Ridge has many promising young performance horses that are heading into the show ring and doing very well. They have an outstanding training staff on-site, but they also send horses out for training. It is a very collaboracollabora tive atmosphere where the goal is to provide every opportunity for horses they breed to be successful in the show ring and in the breeding barn. Even after 50 years of success, the allure of red roses, tri-colored ribbons, and the champion’s victory pass are still thrilling. Over the years, the Ames family has earned many championship titles. However some of the most meaningful awards they have earned are their many Breeder of the Year awards. Being acknowlacknowl edged for the quality of the horses they breed, as well as seeing all the smiling faces of people who have purchased horses from them, is the best re-ward of all for this family of horsemen and womwom en. The joy they experience in breeding outstandoutstand ing Arabian horses is what sustains this family now and will continue for future generations. National Champion MOZART TA with Cyrstal McNutt

GREYMOOR FARM GREYMOOR

Greymoor Farm in Elko, Minnesota, owned by Donna Hentges, boasts a small but internationally successful breeding program. The foundation of the program is First Cyte, a multi-national champion stallion who produced both national and international champions, and three carefully selected broodmares who all produced national champions. Foals from those crosses won an amazing 41 national top tens and 16 national championships in halter. First Cyte daughters are now the farm’s second-generation broodmares, and bred to outside stallions, they have carried on the legacy of producing national champions. Donna’s breeding program, which represents over two decades of research, took a new and exciting turn with the birth of GM Targaryen (Kanz Albidayer x Drama Qyeen) in 2016. His parents are both multi-national champions and there are 25 national winners or producers of national winners in the first four generations of his pedigree. The

mares in Targaryen’s dam line have produced national winners for four generations. Already proving himself in the show ring, his first foals will be born in 2019. Greymoor generally breeds only one foal a year. Not only is Donna a very successful breeder, but she has had great success in marketing her horses as well, both in the United States and abroad. The highest compliment to any program comes from other breeders. Donna’s most recent foals have been exported to international breeders who have enjoyed success with them in the show ring and in their breeding programs. Greymoor Farm proves that small breeders truly can have an international influence.

MAROON FIRE ARABIANS & SSHEA HEA STABLES

Much has been written about the fascinating stories of Dave and Gail Liniger of Maroon Fire Arabians and Tim and Marty Shea of Shea Stables. The stories, many written by Arabian horsewoman Christy Egan, can be found on the Shea Stables website and are truly worth your time to read. The equine histories, as well as the personal histories, are noteworthy and very inspiring. Whether you have been associated with the Arabian horse for five years or fifty, you are either already familiar with these leaders of our community, or you want to be.

The Linigers’ Arabian horse story begins with the life-changing moment of falling in love with Arabian horses more than 30 years ago. Being the brilliant businessman that he is, Dave Liniger, founder of ReMax Real Estate, applied the same practices that made his business so successful to his equine venture and surrounded himself with the most knowledgeable and experienced Arabian horsemen and women in the breed, including Sheila Varian, Don DeLongpre, Gordon Potts, and of course, Tim and Marty Shea of Shea Stables. As the story goes, Dave and Gail were on the hunt for a stallion and had been looking at horses all over the country. While visiting Shea Stables, Tim and Marty presented them with a very special young colt - Afire Bey V (Huckleberry Bey x Autumn Fire, by *Bask). It was one of those pivotal moments when life changes forever - Dave and Gail Liniger, Tim and Marty Shea, and the great Afire Bey V were forged into one team. The Linigers purchased Afire Bey V in SepSep tember of 1989; he was just four-years-old. He went on to win Buckeye Champion English Pleasure Open, as well as U.S. National Top Ten Park. After just one look at his first foals, the Linigers and the Sheas chose to focus on Afire Bey V’s breeding career. At that time, the Linigers began putting together one of the greatest group of mares in history for Afire Bey V. As a Varian-bred stallion, sired by Huckleberry Bey out the Bask daughter Autumn Fire, Afire Bey V’s heriheri tage was legendary and his potential unlimited. Afire Bey V had one registered foal in 1990, and 16 foals in 1991, which included the spectacular mare, Can Can Dancer, 1995 U.S. National Champion Arabian English Pleasure Junior Horse and three-time National Champion Pleasure Driving Champion, Afires Lullabye+. These were among the many champion get and grand get that made Afire Bey V the All-Time Leading Sire of the Arabian horse breed for 20 consecutive years. As of his passing, Afire Bey V had 1,369 registered offspring, 4,642 second generation offspring and his influence grows with each generation. A HT Abroad

A stallion can possess all the potential in the world, but it takes an owner and a team to see his potential and believes in him. They must be fully committed to managing him and willing to provide the support required for him to achieve his ultimate destiny. Together, Dave and Gail Liniger and Tim and Marty Shea were that team. Their belief in Afire Bey V was unshakable. With the help of an aggressive ad campaign, as well as the phenomenal group of mares they collected, they guided him to his place in Arabian horse history as the number one sire of the breed. Afire Bey V spent the majority of his life at Shea Stables under Tim and Marty's watchful care and he remained with them until he passed in November of 2015. The influence of this great stallion cannot be overstated and he lives on in every generation of offspring through eternety. The next step for Maroon Fire Arabians and Shea Stables was the stallion IXL Noble Express (MHR Nobility x RY Fire Ghazi). He was purchased in 2001, as a four-year-old, by the Linigers to cross with their Afire Bey V daughters. IXL Noble Express was a supremely talented stallion and was 2006 U.S. National Champion Park Horse, 2007 Ohio Buckeye Champion Halter Stallion, as well as 2007 U.S. National Top Ten Halter Stallion, placing third in the class. Not only did IXL Noble Express prove himself in the show ring, he also became a leading sire of champions with over 400 Arabian and Half-Arabian offspring, 126 champions, and 58 national winners, with 33 national championships and 22 reserve national championship titles. In 2013, a colt by IXL Noble Express and out of the Afire Bey V daughter, Bonita Afire, was born at Shea Stables. Bred and owned by Maroon Fire Arabians, the colt, named Inception, was a standout among his 10-15 pasture mates. “It was his stature, his silhouette, his shoulder, neck, throat and face that made him stand out. And then, there was his carriage – so impressive, yet totally natural – he was special from day one,” says Marty Shea... special indeed. In November of his twoyear-old year, Inception started his training at Shea Stables and soon, he was sent to Joel Kiesner to complete his training and begin his show career. 2017 was a landmark year for Inception. In his show ring debut, he and Joel were the Unanimous U.S. National AEPA Arabian Horse Times $100,000 Arabian Futurity Champions – he was spectacular. That same year, Inception also bred 50-60 mares in his first breeding season. Inception’s first foals arrived in the spring of 2018, which now represent fourth and fifth generation breeding for Maroon Fire Arabians and Shea Stables. Everyone associated with Inception had eager anticipation and he did

not disappoint. In fact, his foals blew everyone away and exceeded even the greatest expectations. In this, his second season, 75-80 mares were bred. In addition, Inception will return to the U.S. Nationals in English Pleasure Junior Horse with Joel Kiesner in October. This talented show horse and gifted young sire inspires indescribable hope for the Arabian horse breed. Once again, it is the dream team of Dave and Gail Liniger and Tim and Marty Shea who stand firm in their belief of Inception and who are committed to guiding him. For more than 30 years, the Linigers and the Sheas have worked together in partnership. Through decades of efforts, they have established the most successful sire in the history of the breed and bred more champions and champion producers than we can count. Along the way, they have received many well-deserved awards and recognition of their achievements. Between the Linigers and the Sheas, the team has been honored as the APHA Breeder Of The Year five times and nominated for the Arabian Horse Times Readers’ Choice Breeder Of The Year Award numerous times. Two of the their horses, Afires Heir and Adams Fire, were chosen as USEF Horse of the Year, which is an astounding achievement as it is an all-breed award. These same two horses were also nominated to the USEF and Equus Foundation Horse Stars Hall Of Fame. Perhaps the highest award for the Linigers and Sheas was winning the all-breed USEF Pegasus Award for 2012 Breeder of the Year. What can possibly be new and inspiring for these icons of the Arabian breed? The possibilities of the future… the growth and development of their young horses, their young stallion – Inception – and all the promise he brings to Maroon Fire Arabians, Shea Stables and to others; the Inception foals born this year and expected next year; and working together with other breeders to ensure a bright future for the Arabian horse breed. 1) David and Gail Liniger & Marty and Tim Shea. 2) Afire Bey V 3) IXL Noble Express 4) Inception 5) 2018 FOAL (Inception x Heirs Noble Love 6) 2018 FOAL (Inception x Rumina Afire)

MILESTONE ILESTONE ARABIANS ARABIANS

Darla and Steve Miles established their farm, Milestone Arabians in Basehor, Kansas, 27 years ago. Steve grew up in Basehor and their farm was the perfect place to raise their beautiful family of six children. Kansas has a rich history in cattle and working cow horses. The Miles originally raised American Quarter Horses and Black Angus cattle. However, Darla has an eye for the exotic and the beautiful, which drew her to Arabian horses. She wanted an Arabian mare and to have a foal born on their farm. Steve did some research and soon purchased their first Arabian mare, Cerenephantasy (SH Phantom Echo x Celonias Cerenity, by Ali Jamaal), who was in foal to the Magnum Psyche son, Fausto CRH, imported from Brazil. The result was the lovely filly Faustiana, who became the dam of CTJ Kuduro, by Vitorio TO, a U.S. National Champion Yearling Colt and threetime U.S. National Reserve Champion in following years. It did not take long for the Miles’ plans for a hobby farm to evolve into an Arabian horse breeding facility. They started with having one foal in 2004, which increased over the years to 14 foals born at the farm in 2018. Darla and Steve now have several generations of their own breeding program to work with, which they find very rewarding. The Miles are striving to breed Arabian horses that are

beautiful, correct and versatile. Their ideal horse can show in halter when it’s young, and have a performance career when it comes of age. The Milestone herd currently consists of two stallions, five geldings, 11 weanlings and 11 breeding mares. As with most successful breeding programs, the foundation of the Milestone Arabian program was firmly established with their mares, which represent a diversity of bloodlines with consistent quality. Their pedigrees include leading sires Padrons Psyche, Magnum Psyche, Marwan Al Shaqab, El Shaklan through his son Eternety, Bey Shah, Aladdinn, Ali Jamaal, and the legendary straight Egyptian sire Ruminaja Ali. Darla and Steve’s success as breeders is no accident. They study the histor y and produce of the stallion they are considering, in order to gain an understanding of which mares and bloodlines have produced the most successful crosses. They also credit mentors for offering advice and guidance. One of the great mares that calls Milestone Arabians home is the lovely AW Fortune NGold (Legacy Of Gold x Heres Love), a three-time U.S. National Reserve Champion. Now 20-years-old, AW Fortune NGold is Darla and Steve

Another cornerstone of Milestone Arabians’ foundation is the incredible mare, Alia Psyche IA (Padrons Psyche x Focus Alianna, by Ruminaja Ali). Alia Psyche is the full sister to British National Champion Focus Seneca, owned by Shirley Watts of Halsdon Stud. Alia Psyche is an amazing producer, and one of the most beautiful Psyche daughters of all time. Her three-year-old son, Harjeet MA, by U.S. National and World Champion Stallion Hariry Al Shaqab, was just named Canadian National Champion Futurity Colt. Three Milestone mares are in foal to him and will produce his first offspring in 2019. He is available for outside breeding mares and stands at Midwest Training Centre. Milestone Arabians’ breeding program has produced two additional halter National Champions: Valdyss MA ( Valerio x Satin Chall LL), the 2017 U.S. National Champion Yearling Gelding and 2018 Canadian National Champion

Milestone Arabians is focused on family and they are very hands-on with their horses. Darla and Steve’s daughter, Whitney Miles, shows in both halter and performance and is part of the farm operations as well. From breeding and foaling out their mares, to starting their babies and showing them in halter, and starting their own performance horses, Darla, Steve and Whitney Miles know the value and rewards of honest work. They are very proud of their farm and their horses. And in spite of all they have accomplished, they are kind, generous, humble, and hardworking people who truly love the Arabian horse. In their own words, “We are grateful for all of the amazing friends we have met through our horses. Our goal is to continue breeding our mares to stallions that will enhance their qualities and produce the best foals possible; that can be sold worldwide, and that can be enjoyed in many different ways – from beloved pets to National and International Champions. That’s what we love most about Arabian horses – they can do it all – and do it beautifully.”

Dixie & Robert North with their daughters of Falcon BHF

As breeders, the Norths have tried to look ahead and plan the next step – the next generation. Their goal was to find a stallion to breed to Psyche’s daughters. While visiting Brazil, they discovered Sir Fames HBV (Ffamess x Cajun Lady HCF) who they purchased from Luciano Cury and brought to America in 2002. Sir Fames HBV quickly became a highly regarded stallion in his own right by producing beautiful halter and performance get. Sir Fames HBV stood at North Arabians for eight years and was then sold to the well-known Brazilian breeder, Jose Alves, but not before he had sired their current Leading Sire of Halter Horses, Ever After NA, out of Entaicyng NA – also bred by them. Ever After NA was it – he was exactly the stallion Dixie and Robert were looking for to breed to their Psyche daughters. Today, Dixie and Robert have started on the next generation of their breeding program with the young, high-stepping stallion Grand Commandd. They are using him on the Ever After NA and Psyche daughters with amazing results, and also using a few outside stallions for some of the mares. Both Ever After NA and Grand Commandd have been on the Scottsdale Leading Sires list for several years. Recently, the Norths have selectively reintroduced Psyche back into their breeding program by using some of his frozen semen with several of their best broodmares. The result was three wonderful Psyche foals born in 2018. Over the last 30 years of breeding, the Norths have learned that any breeding program should focus more than 60% of its efforts on the selection of broodmares. In the early days of standing Padrons Psyche, they could easily see that A HT Abroad

he crossed very well with the daughters of Bey Shah – it seemed like it was almost magic! Their Bey Shah daughter, WA Marlaina Lee, produced multiple national champions with Padrons Psyche and his son, Magnum Psyche. At 26-yearsold, Marlaina Lee is still one of the queens at North Arabians. Even at this advanced age, she is healthy, happy and enjoys her life of leisure in the pasture with her friends and an orphaned Half-Arabian colt she adopted. WA Marlaina Lee’s Psyche daughter, Margarita Psy, has become the farm’s premier broodmare with 11 foals, many of which are being shown by other leading breeders around the world. Over the course of almost 50 years with Arabian horses, Dixie and Robert have bred and owned many national and reserve national champions, as well as Scottsdale, Arabian Breeders World Cup, regional and international champions. They have experienced the excitement of winning, as well as the disappointment of losing. The key, they say, is that if you loved your horse before the class, you should still love the horse after the class. The advice they offer new breeders is this, “Go to shows, attend clinics, subscribe to Arabian magazines, talk to breeders and owners, look at bloodlines of the horses you like, then buy the best mare you can afford. Really study the babies at the shows, decide which ones you like best and study to see who are their sires. Then choose a stallion and try to breed the type of horse you most admire.” A HT Abroad

And then again this year, we were honored to receive the Brazilian Breeders Lifetime Achievement Award at their National Championship Show. It was a thrilling and very emotional moment for us.” Robert and Dixie are focused on the future, “We always look forward to Margarita Psy’s foals by Ever After NA and next year we are expecting another Grand Commandd foal out of one of our Ever After NA daughter. We also bred the Scottsdale Junior Champion Filly and Arabian Breeders World Cup Gold Champion, Mystic Magnolia PF, by Ever After NA and out of a Psyche daughter, to Barzan Al Shahania. We had a beautiful filly this year by Barzan out of our mare Evening Song IA, she is another champion Ever After daughter. Although due to our age, we are cutting back somewhat on our breeding program, we can be sure that one of these years we will foal out ‘The Perfect Arabian Horse!’ Looking back, our life with the Arabian horse has been incredibly enriching... the places we have traveled all around the world, the wonderful people we’ve met, and the beautiful Arabian horses we have known make us feel very blessed.” A HT Abroad

OAK RIDGE ARABIANS

Vitorio TO is one of the Arabian horse world’s premiere sires, with champion offspring scattered across the globe. A dominant show horse himself, the son of DA Valentino and Sol Natique won FIVE International Championships with handler David Boggs at his side before spending the next six years breeding some of the finest mares in the world. Vitorio TO is the current Leading Halter Sire in North America with more than $350,000 in prize money earned by his offspring to date. Vitorio TO has also been the Leading Halter Sire at Scottsdale for several years running and has topped the sire list at the Arabian Breeders World Cup and the United States National Championships. European breeders took notice when Vitorio TO became the first American stallion in 20 years to be invited to serve some of the best mares for two full breeding seasons at Poland’s prestigious Michalów State Stud. One example of the exceptional results of his visit was his chestnut daughter Emanolla— out of World Champion Emandoria—who was named the 2018 Polish National Gold Champion Junior Filly. His bay son Calateon (Vitorio TO x Calatea) captured the Gold Champion Yearling Colt honors at Warsaw and was top ten at the prestigious World Championships in Paris. With his progeny earning such impressive international honors and far too many North American champions to list, Vitorio TO has already secured his legacy in the Arabian breed’s history. Even as his roster of winners continues to grow each year, Vitorio TO has returned to the show ring, where he claimed his sixth national title—2017 United States National Reserve Champion Senior Stallion—in the process earning the highest single score ever awarded in U.S. history. With such results, it is easy to understand how Vitorio’s glorious past has become our future at Oak Ridge Arabians.

OM EL ARAB

DeShazer

For almost 48 years, Om El Arab has been recognized as one of the leading breeding programs in the world. Established in 1970 by Sigi Siller and Heinz Merz, this landmark center, located in Santa Ynez, California, is now guided by the gentle hand and brilliant mind of Janina Merz, who learned all about Arabian horses as she grew up by her mother’s side. Together, Sigi and Janina worked to establish a successful breeding program of great international influence, which was truly a labor of love for them both. The result is a name that is recognized around the world and is regarded as the source for Arabian horses of unique beauty and quality.

Janina explained the origin of the farm and it’s name, “In 1970, my parents bought a mare in Egypt named Om El Arab, meaning ‘Mother of all Arabians.’ My mom thought it was a perfect name for their budding breeding program. The original farm was located in Germany. In1983, my parents purchased land in California and immediately sent horses there. One year later, our entire family followed. I am a fourth generation horse breeder and am very fortunate to have been born into this business. My mother created a totally unique look by crossing Spanish and Egyptian bloodlines. We line-breed, then infuse an outcross, and then breed back to our own lines. This philosophy has worked well for us. I feel very privileged to continue the tradition of breeding horses with the ‘Om El Arab’ look my mother established.”

Today, over 100 Om El Arab-owned horses live at the farm. Most of them trace back to the program’s iconic foundation mare, Estopa. This mare created a global dynasty through her incredible sons and daughters. There are so many champions and champion producers, it is impossible to name them all, or to say which are most important. However, the name El Shaklan is perhaps the most widely recognized. After almost 50 years, many of those early horses have passed on and now their descendants carry on the legacy. Today, horses at the farm represent seven generations of Om El Arab breeding. Their importance, and that of the foundation horses, cannot be overstated. Om El Arab currently stands eight breeding stallions, including client-owned stallions. All breeding is completed on site. Janina says she chooses stallions that complement her mares phenotypically and genotypically. Each Om El Arab stallion breeds a number of mares on the farm. Periodically, the linebred mares are paired with a complete outcross stallion. In the past, they have leased stallions to infuse new blood into the herd with great success. Marketing keeps the farm running, so that is a very important responsibility. Fortunately, the Om El Arab horses are always in demand. Janina says that one of her most significant accomplishments was breeding the exquisite young mare, Om El Erodite (EKS Alihandro x Om El Excella). “She was created from a whim and a hunch and a sprinkling of magic dust. Erodite was one of the first breeding decisions I made on my own. Her birth, shortly after my mom’s passing, gave me so much – it gave me the confidence that I could continue to fill the empty shoes left for me.” Living with Arabian horses teaches us many of life’s most important lessons. Perhaps the most difficult lesson is that life is short and it is challenging. Janina experiences this reality everyday. Her life changed forever when her mother, Sigi Siller, passed away in 2016. These days, Janina finds support with her partner, Bryon, and son, Luca, who travel with her to horse events around the world. For the future of Om El Arab, Janina says, “I hope to ignite the passion for Arabian horses in people I meet, as well as those who may be introduced to Om El Arab through articles like this. It is important for the longevity of our breed to help people enter into our world in the most supportive way possible. They, and of course the horses, are our future.”

This is a special opportunity to mention a mare that was near and dear to all - RHR Lovely (DA Valentino x LC Psychesheiress). Sadly, Lovely was lost earlier this year. But she will always be remembered for the three very special foals she produced that will carry on her legacy at OFW. Another exquisite mare that will not be overlooked is the famous Duchess Of Marwan (Marwan Al Shaqab x Amety B), who everyone believes will have a big impact with OFW. Orrion Farms’ business model concentrates on their high level mares and breeding to select outside stallions. With no breeding stallion owned or standing at the farm, they are free to choose sires without bias or hindrance of geographical boundaries; sires with the potential to enhance or elevate their mares’ qualities and to produce superior foals both in type and future breeding potential. Orrion Farm’s goal is to one day breed a stallion-quality colt from one of their outstanding mares. Doug Leadley says that at this point, they have a few stellar colts that show promising potential as breeding sires, but they still have some growing up to do before being put to the test, including El Rey Magnum, who is just a yearling, so they will have to wait a while to realize his impact as a future sire.

Along with the excitement of creating a world-class breeding program comes responsibilities. Doug Leadley states, “The goal at Orrion Farms is to create happy, healthy, trusting and well-trained horses. All of our foals will be given the training and education they need to be positive members of our community. We want them to be the kind of horses their owners can enjoy in any discipline or recreation – halter, performance, or a super fun trail horse – all are treated the same here at OFW. When it comes to training, our number one goal is safety – for the horses and everyone involved. We have extremely talented and experienced staff here at OFW. All our foals go through ‘OFW Kindergarten,’ which starts them on their way to being well-trained, highly trusting and trust-worthy young horses. The OFW herd includes several Arabian riding horses, purposely selected to head off the question, ‘Do you ride these horses?’ The answer to that is an emphatic, yes, we love riding our Arabian horses!” Another critical aspect of the breeding program is marketing. One of the farm’s long-term goals is to see OFW horses competing successfully around the globe. With more than 40 years of experience as a trainer, handler and manager, Doug Leadley knows that deciding which

horses to sell is never an easy job. Making sure the quality of foals bred at OFW is at the level that will create demand, and find owners that will provide good homes and opportunities for the horses to flourish, will be an exciting task – and everyone at OFW is committed to their horses and their goals. Doug shares the Orrion Farms vision for the future, “As breeders, the goal is to continue to grow the OFW breeding program, focusing on a solid genetic foundation. We are strong believers in creating predictability within our foundation and thus far, we have acquired an exceptional group of mares we believe have the potential to provide the predictability and consistency we strive for. As members of the Arabian horse community, we look forward to growing and strengthening the wonderful relationships we’ve made and contributing in a meaningful way for years to come.” 5)

accomplishment! Jamilaah Anjum has now joined the breeding mares. She is a strong producer as well. Toni’s foundation mare Forbidden Love LL (Versace x BH Magnumsylowete), has produced some of Quintessa Arabians’ top foals, including the exotic filly Jumaana QF, sired by Rohara Extrem Justice, now owned by Al Sayed Stud in Saudi Arabia. Toni has no stallions of her own. Instead, she chooses proven sires she believes will cross well with each of her individual mares. With transported semen, breeders can pretty much select any stallion in the world, so she doesn’t limit herself to just one. The most prevalent sires featured in the Quintessa program include WH Justice, Marwan Al Shaqab, Padrons Psyche and Versace, because their pedigrees represent generations of great sires all blended together. Toni’s method for deciding which stallion to use is based on STUDY, STUDY and more STUDY. She looks for stallions with her style of phenotype and then researchs their genotype before making any breeding decisions for her mares. Toni is creative and passionate; her horses are her “Art with a heart.” Although she currently owns 33 Arabians, not all are in production. She actually has quite a few mares that she’s not breeding, but she promised them a forever home at her farm. Toni feels that it’s her responsibility to give them the life they deserve and their well-being is her foremost priority. Toni believes in gentle handling from the time her foals are born because it allows them to bond with people and gives them a great start in life. Later, if and when they leave the farm, they are equipped with the tools to do well wherever they go. Toni Pierce has a knack for creating places that are beautiful and serene. She jokes that when people visit Quintessa, they almost never want to leave. It’s definitely a place where the horses are respected and loved. Toni shares, “Looking back at the past six years, I am proud to have bred fillies that have won and done well at the Scottsdale show. I also can say that a horse I bred is now owned by one of the top international breeders in the world. I consider those notable accomplishments. My vision for the future is to keep learning and fine-tune my focus. I am excited to create new horses with exotic beauty and good conformation, so I can be proud of what I bring to the Arabian horse community.” A HT Abroad

RAE-DAWN ARABIANS

Love of family and Arabian horses are the foundation of Murray and Shirley Popplewell’s Rae-Dawn Arabians. The farm is named after their daughters, Amanda Raylene and Juanita Dawn. According to Murray Popplewell, the love affair with Arabian horses happened quite by chance. “We purchased two horses to ride, and they both happened to be Arabians. We soon visited a neighbor’s Arabian horse farm and bought a mare in foal and the rest is history.” Shirley and Murray embrace every aspect of living the Arabian horse lifestyle. They love their horses so much, that they built the most beautiful havens in two separate countries, which enables them to breed, raise, care and train their prized Arabians in-house. The farm in Saskatoon, Canada, houses the mares and foals where they are able to enjoy lush pastures with abundant room to roam. The training and marketing facility located in Scottsdale, Arizona, and managed by resident trainer Bruno Guiraldelli, is considered by many as the jewel of the Scottsdale Arabian horse community, and the world for that matter. The Popplewells are very hands-on owners, managing all aspects of the day-to-day care of the horses. From foaling out their mares, to hauling horses back and forth across the country, to being very accomplished handlers showing and enjoying their horses in amateur halter competition, these owners do it all. Shirley and Murray knew from the very beginning they wanted to breed the highest quality horses possible; horses with classic beauty and correct conformation, traits that enabled each individual to show at the highest levels of halter competition. Those goals remain the same when making breeding decisions at Rae-Dawn Arabians today. They also take temperament and trainability into consideration - traits equally as important as natural athletic ability - for horses to excel in all performance divisions with amateur or open riders. The Popplewells follow the tried and true tradition of starting with high quality mares that have the classic

traits they aspire to reproduce. They have acquired and bred some incredible mares, which continue to yield spectacular results year after year. When it comes to stallion selection for their mares, the Popplewells look for stallions that can strengthen a mare’s weakness and add to her strengths. RaeDawn’s senior stallion, Bey Ambition (Regal Actor JP x Bey Shahs Lady), recently named the 2018 Canadian National Champion, put the farm on the map. “Bey” has sired numerous champion sons and daughters in both halter and performance, and the many daughters retained for the Rae-Dawn breeding program are producing extremely well. As breeders, it’s important to always be thinking ahead. Shirley and Murray have mapped out the next step for their breeding program, which includes a very special upand-coming young stallion they bred, RD Capriotti (Shanghai EA x Mi Morena), the 2018 Canadian Reserve National Champion Futurity Colt with Bruno Guiraldelli. Capriotti’s first foals, out of Bey Ambition daughters, were born this year and exceeded the Popplewells’ highest expectations. In addition, the couple also look to outside stallions with proven production records for their mares in order to infuse outcross pedigrees that strengthen the Popplewells’ vision and ideals. Travel has provided the couple with incredible insights into the ever-changing topic of breeding Arabians horses, including a wonderful visit to Brazil in 2017, and most recently a trip to the 2018 debut of the China Arabian Horse Show this past August in Beijing. The Popplewells understand the responsibility of breeding world-class Arabian horses and embrace the endeavor as a privilege. Murray explains some of the challenges they face, “We breed with the idea to keep every horse. However, that is impossible. As

breeders, we must keep some good ones to advance our program, even though they are the easiest to sell. High quality is always in high demand. We have been lucky to sell our horses all aver the world and it is rewarding to see them winning at international shows for their new owners and then also becoming contributing members of global breeding programs. We want to feel like we are having a positive impact on the Arabian horse breed through our horses and the friendships we have developed through them.” The tremendous appeal of Rae-Dawn Arabians for breeders and owners in the U.S. and abroad lies in their beauty, as well as their character, which is their inherent nature – they are bred to be kind, intelligent and trainable. These traits are nurtured from birth. Murray describes their approach to training and management, “Every horse at Rae-Dawn Arabians is handled with the utmost respect. We employ our own in-house trainer, Bruno Guiraldelli. We truly appreciate him and the fact that he understands we want halter training done with respect, and with the goal of life after halter. We started out with riding horses and we love performance. We believe riding our horses creates a bond with them unlike anything else.” Murray and Shirley contribute to the Arabian horse community beyond the show ring and their breeding program. Murray is on the Board of Directors for the Arabian Horse Breeders Alliance, which hosts the prestigeous Arabian Breeders World Cup in Las Vegas. The Popplewells also sponsor the ABWC Lifetime Achievement Award, which honors industry leaders. At their beautiful facilities, they host numerous open houses and activities, welcoming all lovers of the Arabian horse. Their intentions are totally pure: they hope to introduce as many people as possible to the Arabian horse and to share their love for the breed.

The female members of the Rose City Arabians’ herd includes their foundation mare, Estella di Enzo (Enzo x Star Chance SA), currently in foal to Shanghai EA with a confirmed filly. They also have three yearling fillies; two by Marekk and one by Enotri EEA. Their 2-year-old filly, also by Marekk, is out of the Brazilian National and Scottsdale Champion Mare Regal Fada JP. All of the mares and fillies live at the ranch where Kim and Joe can work with and enjoy them every day. Recently, Joe and Kim Orr had the opportunity to acquire a very special mare, Ghazala El Jamaal (Marwan Al Shaqab x Foxbriar Parysel, by Parys El Jamaal). U.S. National and Australian National Champion Ghazala Al Jamaal is a three-quarter sister to FA El Shawan and Na’mous Al Shahania. Ghazala is described as, “Exceptionally beautiful, the highest quality, dappled-bay mare with a perfect body, and excellent legs and feet.” Not only is Ghazala El Jamaal a proven champion, she is also a champion producer and the dam of the 2018 Scottsdale International Champion and Arabian Classic Supreme Gold Champion Junior Filly, the Scottsdale Champion Auction Signature Yearling Colt, 2018 Canadian National Champion Sweepstakes Yearling Colt, NZ National Champion Two-Year- Old Filly and Australian National Champion Yearling Colt and grand dam of two NZ National Champions. Now, this exquiste mare is owned by Joe and Kim Orr and they could not be more excited. “Owning a beautiful and accomplished mare like Ghazal Al Jamaal is a dream come true,” says Joe. “We are totally committed to providing the absolute best care for her and giving her every opportunity to fulfill her destiny.” The male members of the Rose City herd include Jawhar RC, a 2018 Scottsdale Signature colt that is now growing up at Falcon Crest Arabians. Ranch owners, Debbie and Ken Waite, take the Orr’s foals upon weaning to teach them proper manners and prepare them for the next step in their journey. Jawhar RC will head to Scottsdale in 2019 for his big show ring debut in the Scottsdale Signature YearYear ling Colt class with Joe Orr. The Orrs are also in partnerpartner ship on the 2-year-old colt RC Marvel (Marekk x Da Vie JMF). The Orrs purchased Marvel as a weanling and soon learned they needed help to manage a colt. They engaged Gary McDonald of McDonald Arabians in Scottsdale, Arizona, and are thrilled with the expertise and years of experience he brings to the partnership. Marvel is currently in performance training with Gary and the team is doing exceptionally well. GHAZAL EL JAMAAL (Marwan Al Shaqab x Foxbriar Parysel)

Kim and Joe regard their horses as loving, grounding members of their family. They enjoy the lifestyle and the people, who the Orrs say are some of the best they have ever met. While they operate their farm as a business, the most important thing for them, is the potential to make a positive advancement in the evolution of the breed. Asked about the future, Kim and Joe Orr say they look forward to watching their creations and family of horses mature and make their mark in the wonderful history book being written every day. Royal’s breeding program now includes about 40 mares –– “solid, good foundation mares,” Amanda says. “My mom also purchases embryo rights to mares that offer interesting opportunities.” Royal takes a thoughtful and deliberate approach to breeding decisions. Knowing that no breeder can accomplish his or her goals by breeding for everything at once, or by experimenting in all directions, Royal is methodical, and takes things step by step. “.“This year, we are focusing in particular on bodies,” Amanda says. “We see room for improvement in body across the breed.” One of the special mares now in foal to Royal Asad is Alma HVP (Marwan Al Shaqab x Foxbriar Shakita). Purchased by Royal Arabians and Silver Box Southwest at the Marquise Auction at Scottsdale last year, she was “an absolute must-have,” states Royal’s marketing manager and pedigree guru, Travis Rice, “because of how her full brother FA El Shawan, produced, and for the uniqueness and value of her female line to Furno Kamal. Kamal produced structure –– amazing bodies, great hocks and movement; huge hips, long straight fountain tails, refined muzzles, tight black skin, exciting attitude and expression –– overall, true Arabian beauty and charisma. We expect the same from the amazing Alma.” At present, the Royal program centers primarily on three spectacular and distinctively different stallions –– Royal Asad (El Tino x Lumiar Ethna), Halyr Meia Lua (Ajman Moniscione x Halya de Jylbert) and Royal Maestro (Pershahn El Jamaal x Aria Marchestra). “Cindy has a three-, five- and 10-year plan,” says Travis. “Asad and Halyr have huge roles. We will be crossing Asad on Halyr daughters, and Halyr on Asad daughters.” Royal Asad was spotted as a colt in Brazil by Amanda, Guzzo and Travis when they were not even looking for a stallion at all. “We were at Dejaire Souza’s training barn looking for mares and fillies,” Travis remembers, “when

around the corner came this incredible teacup muzzle, head and neck –– attached to a colt. The three of us looked at each other in disbelief.” Amanda immediately phoned her Mom and exclaimed, ‘We need this horse!’ Outside breedings to Royal Asad –– who has now been Champion at Scottsdale, Arabian Breeders World Cup in Las Vegas and Scottsdale National Breeder Finals –– totaled 75 last year. Some of the best breeders in the world are trying him on their finest mares. His success at Royal is already established. As a coming three-year-old, Asad had two exceptional foals recently born, both with “his incredibly refined teacup muzzle, huge black eyes, great shape to the necks and incredible size,” Travis says. Halyr Meia Lua, dicovered in Brazil and originally leased on Royal’s behalf by Guzzo, was recently purchased outright. “We saw his babies winning at the Brazilian Nationals, which made us curious,” says Guzzo. “As soon as we saw him –– his size, presence, hip and head –– we leased him. The great babies with beautiful faces just kept coming, so we decided we had to own him.” Adds Travis, “Halyr has been an excepexcep tional cross on the Marwan line, especially on El Shawan daughters, adding length to tail bones and enhancing ‘fountain’ tail carriage. Halyr adds beautiful structure to the face, even more shape and bend to the lovely Marwan necks, and snort and blow. In fact, on whatever lines he is crossed, Halyr consistently produces pretty faces, long tail bones, and the beautiful fountain tails we want in the Arabian horse.” Royal’s three-time National Champion performance horse, Royal Maestro, will have his first foals on the ground this year. He is also an accomplished halter horse, who won over $60,000 in halter prizes as a yearling. “So he’s a Royal stallion with titles in both arenas,” Amanda says “He’s a big, substantial horse with lots of type and performance ability.’” With all the magnificent horses Royal Arabians has collected and is producing, it is a breeder to watch and remember.

S ILVER BOX SOUTHWEST The stables of Silver Box Southwest, in Carefree, AZ, house halter, breeding and riding horses –– and sculpture models. Founded in 2009, the venture grew from the desire of its owners, transplanted New Yorkers Stuart M. Nierenberg and Carol Fensholt Nierenberg, for connection and community with people who share their passions for horses, travel and art. Recently, Carol widened the program’s scope by creating Silver Box Studios, her equine-sculpting second career that follows decades of publishing magazines in Manhattan. “The name ’Silver Box’ represents that special place in our hearts where we safeguard our most treasured memories,” Carol explains. “Our hope is that friends and family will come here, and leave with mementos worthy of the Silver Box in their own hearts –– memories that will last as long as we all do.” Today, Silver Box Southwest is home to nearly a dozen fine Arabian halter horses, including Debutante BHF, a Denali BHF daughter, and two weanlings sired by RFI Farid –– a promising colt out of Evening Song IA and a filly out of Caressable NA. Stu and Carol also partner in several joint ventures: North Nierenberg LLC, a partnership with Robert and Dixie North, owns the Scottsdale Champion/Arabian Breeders World Cup Gold Champion Filly Mystic Magnolia PF (Ever After NA x Mystic Rose BHF); and Royal/ Silver Box, a partnership with Cindy McGown and Mark Davis, owns Alma HVP (a full sibling to FA El Shawan), Bianca AL (Halyr Meia Lua x Giuliana El Shawan), Claudiaa (Psytadel x RA Cool Elygance), and Royal Coquettaa SVB (Avalon LBA x Claudiaa). Silver Box also owns two Lusitano stallions, on which Carol and Stu practice classical riding. Carol, who loves the trails too, recently added to the herd a black Arabian stallion, Sultan AS (Triton BP x CG Kalani), acquired from Arabian Soul. “We flew to Rodrigo Gonzales’s farm, A HT Abroad

Tierra Santa, in Mexico after the Arabian Breeders World Cup,” Carol says. “There, I had the thrill of my life, galloping all over the mountains on Sultan. I couldn’t leave without my dream ride!” Sultan AS is the model for Carol’s newest bronze, “Sultan of Swing,” and the basis for a special collaborative project soon to be revealed. This lovely bronze joins a Silver Box Studios lineup that includes the Supreme Champion trophies for the Arabian Breeders World Cup; perpetual trophies honoring Sheila Varian and Sigi Siller for the Scottsdale Arabian show; the AHBA “Lifetime Achievement Award” trophy presented thus far to North Arabians, Al Shaqab, and the family of Lenita Perroy; as well as Gold Champion trophies for Kuwait’s Nationals and Egyptian Event show. As a breeding program, Silver Box Southwest intends to stay small and focused. “Having just a few select horses makes it easier for me to enjoy each one, and give them the attention and love they deserve,” Carol says. “Sculpting takes up much of my time, energy and attention. Therefore, we choose to tightly limit our program.” As small, select breeders of Arabian horses, Carol adds, “Our watchwords are passion, purpose, pedigree, preparation –– and, of course, expert perspective, for thinking through everything that we do. Stu and I are fortunate to have four supremely successful partners –– Dixie, Robert, Cindy and Mark –– and superlative advisers, including pedigree encyclopedia Travis Rice and renowned show ring master Rodolfo Guzzo, to help guide us. “This team is beyond compare. It’s only because of all these wonderful people, and many others who have counseled and helped us during the past decade, that we are now actually doing what we set out to do –– filling the Silver Box with beautiful babies, bronzes, moments and memories. For this Arabian adventure, we thank you all.”

Holly Dillin began with Arabian horses in the early 90’s, when she bought her first Arabian mare for trail riding and team penning. It didn’t take long to realize that Arabians were much different than other breeds she had ridden as a child. The mare was so sweet and loyal, she was the horse of Holly’s dreams and she wanted more. The Dillin family originally purchased their farm just outside Fort Worth, Texas, as a place to enjoy hunting and fishing. The farm was formerly a Thoroughbred breeding facility, and with her flair for design and love of horses, it took very little time for Holly to turn it into a world-class Arabian breeding farm that produces

some of the most beautiful and athletic purebred and Half-Arabian horses in America. Today, Holly and her family have about 80 horses. That number fluctuates with the new foals that are born and horses that are sold throughout the year. Holly breeds between 10-12 foals a year from her extraordinary group of broodmares. Among her most treasured foundation mares are JE Ali Selene (Ali Jamaal x OF Foltrokaa), Lady Bey Khelishah (Bey Shah x JA Khesia), CM Morningstar (El Montenegro x Supremes Fantasy), Cuervos Valantina (MJD Cuervo Gold x EE Karmel) and her precious jewel, WC Ciao Bella+/ (Xceptshahn x JE Ali Selene), the most nationally titled halter mare in U.S. history.

With all the stallions available in the world, Holly doesn’t have to look far to find sires to complement her beautiful mares. She currently owns and stands four stallions, including Renaissanse (Ali Jamaal x Carismor), WC Ali Gazal (Gazal Al Shaqab x JE Ali Selene), WC Ciao Psyche (Padrons Psyche x WC Ciao Bella), and PF Psymply Psyche (Padrons Psyche x Skarlett Silk). All are used for breeding at her farm, as well as to outside mares. A quick review of her stallions’ pedigrees reveals the multiple sources of their incredible genetic strength, inherited from Legends of the Breed, World Champions, International Champions and Leading Sires of the Breed. Holly has carefully and thoughtfully blended the very best of the best to produce her own Scottsdale, Arabian Breeders World Cup, National and International champions in halter and performance. Not only are Holly’s horses very beautiful, they are bred for the temperament, kind dispositions, and natural ability to perform in any discipline. But they really shine as regional and national level hunter and western pleasure horses for youth, amateur and open riders. Holly Dillin’s Western Cross Arabians, represents the best of American breeders. Her love for her horses runs deep and true. Actually, they are a reflection of their breeder: lovely and kind, smart and extremely talented. Although Holly has received many awards, and earned two Top Five Breeder Awards at the prestigious Arabian Breeders World Cup in Las Vegas, the best prizes of all are the beautiful foals she welcomes each spring. Whether a potential buyer is looking for a champion halter horse, a champion performance horse, breeding stock, or a trail horse, they can be assured of finding a very special horse at Western Cross Arabians. Mediterranean & Arab Countries Arabian Horse Championship

The s n i Look That W

by Susanne Bösche

Flash, brash …

her silver hair fluttering in the wind and her slender legs dancing in the white sand, the waves gently lapping on the nearby sea while the sun is shining down from a saphire blue sky. Photographers are reaching for their cameras. This elegant beauty has the look that wins! She is the perfect cover girl. What sounds like a professional shoot for the cover of a major fashion magazine was the scene at one of the most prestigious Arabian horse shows in Europe, the Mediterranean and Arab Countries Arabian Horse Championship. The fashion world isn’t the only one with celebrities; the same goes for the Arabian horse industry. It was the Ashhal Al Rayyan daughter Anood Al Nasser, who stepped on the sunny beach of Menton - known as “the pearl of France” - earning another Gold Senior Mare championship alongside

Glenn Schoukens, wowing spectators and judges alike. Gracing the back cover of AHT Abroad’s Summer issue, Anood Al Nasser is one of the pearls of HE Sheikh Nawaf Bin Nasser Al Thani’s well-thought-out breeding program. Many cover girls rocket to worldwide fame; their faces launching new looks, setting the standard for what millions think of as beautiful. And this too, applies to Arabian horse breeding with one exception: while twolegged cover girls are hot properties with skyrocketing rates of pay, the four-legged ones prefer tasty carrots! AHT Abroad’s front cover girl of the Menton issue, D Ajayeb, caught the attention of the judges, too. The 3-year-old RFI Farid daughter out of famed Ladi Veronika is no newcomer to the show ring. As a yearling, the silver-grey filly had a preference for Gold, garnering championships in Dubai, Menton, Aachen

and Paris. In 2018, D Ajayeb returned alongside Paolo Capecci to compete for Junior Filly honors, and she succeeded. After winning the third Gold medal in a row in Dubai earlier this year - a record in the history of this show - D Ajayeb accomplished Gold in Menton, plus the most coveted award for Best in Show Female. Dubai Arabian Horse Stud’s VIP table was well stocked with lots of trophies, thanks to future-oriented management General Manager Mohammed Al Thaweedi and Executive Manager Abdelaziz Almarauki.

Horses with the prefix “D” achieved Gold and two Bronze with yearlings, and a Silver in Junior Colts. The team of Al Saqran Stud had a reason to cheer when their AJ Dinar son E.S. Harir repeated his feat from Dubai and celebrated a clear win, becoming Unanimous Gold Champion Senior Stallion and Best in Show Male, with Paolo Capecci again on the lead. Everybody expected another good performance from this grey stallion, and E.S. Harir did not disappoint his owner or the spectators.

With copper-colored Cavalli, the Senior Stallion Championship saw another astounding showstopper. Unanimously winning Silver, Cavalli was considered a shoe-in among Arabian horse lovers. Sired by DA Valentino representing the Versace sire line, and out of a mare by Padrons Psyche, the 2015 Italian Gold National Champion Cavalli has not been intensely campaigned so far. Bred by the Polling family of the U.S., and owned by Mubarak Awaad, this stallion has lit the fire deep in the soul of many who saw him alongside Giacomo Gapacci at the French Riviera. Young and ambitious breeder, Jennifer Dhombre, celebrated the success of her stallion, Styx Kalliste (Shanghai EA x LA Saalmah) alongside Scott Allman. On social media, Jennifer wrote about Styx Kalliste, “Even if you missed the Bronze by one little point, you made France and Europe shine. Among the best horses in the world.” The tall 3-year-old colt received the Best French Horse Award and Jennifer now searches for a place for the lovely painting she received by artist Paola Mariangeli.

The fiery stallions always catch the attention of everyone, but the female classes were extremely competitive this year also. Many mares and fillies had already won titles at major shows around the globe. No wonder, the Senior Championship was a close decision. Bint Hazy Al Khalediah received Silver, bested by only one point of the aforementioned Anood Al Nasser. One judge also saw Bronze winning Om El Aisha Aljassimya as the Gold Champion. Best Straight Egyptian Badawieh AA (Laheeb x Bahiha), proudly owned by Ajman Stud, proved that it is possible to compete on the highest level. Her breeder, Chen Kedar, enjoyed an exciting weekend, as another of Chen’s mares, Labibah AA, currently on lease to Al Thumama Stud, competed successfully in the probably most combatant class of the show. “It is not good for the Egyptian horses to be kept away from such shows. It is not good for the breed,” wrote Chen on Facebook. “We strongly suggest that all straight Egyptian breeders should give it a try and proudly show their horses at the open shows.” This article would not be complete without mentioning the new décor of the VIP area, with the white and blue lending a nautical and warm atmosphere; just the perfect summery theme for a show on the French Riviera, studded with towns which the international jet-set have loved for decades. It is along this coast, which fills to the bursting point in July and August, that the gently sloping sandy beaches run into the gorgeous azure blue of the Mediterranean, and thus concludes another championship in conservative, delightful

Menton.

Throughout history, Arabian horses from the Middle East were spread around the world by both war and trade. European emperors, kings and princes were keen to find the best Arabian horses to improve other breeds by adding speed, refinement, endurance and good bone. For decades, the Arabian horse has built an exceptional reputation for intelligence, high spirit and outstanding stamina.

Napoleon Bonaparte, for example, had a preference for little Arabs over the more popular English Thoroughbreds, and used to ride on several Arabian stallions like Wagram, Vizir and Seidiman, entrusting them his life. The Arabian stallion Vizir carried the Emperor all the way to Russia and back to Paris, more than six thousand kilometers in eight months. Only recently, the focus lies on the Arabians’ unrivaled beauty, distinctively chiseled head and high tail carriage. The Arabian horse’s performance ability has not received the attention it deserves. The fact is, the Arabian horse is a versatile sport horse, too. It can do everything you want.

Arabian horses lend themselves to many different uses. Enthusiastic riders of noble Arabian horses enjoy their company during a relaxed ride through the woods or competing at regional riding events. The sport horse disciplines offer a wide variety of opportunities to show the smart and healthy Arabian in many ways. And in many cases, a rider starting with a certain horse will keep it for years, thanks to the well-known longevity of the breed. International competitions in endurance are a gateway to bigger ambitions, as well as the ECAHO European Championship for Sport Arabians.

THE 2018 ECAHO EUROPEAN SPORT CHAMPIONSHIP “More and better riders with better-trained horses …,” the judges were full of praise at the ECAHO European Championships for Sports Arabs in Wiener Neustadt, Austria. Over four days, riders from eight ECAHO member countries (Austria, Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Switzerland and Sweden) demonstrated good sport on their Arabian horses; fighting for nine European championship titles in the disciplines of dressage, classic pleasure, hunter pleasure, reining, trail and western pleasure, and the special ECAHO ladies side saddle classic and western, and traditional Arabian riding (native costume) competitions. Helmut Schulz, Elisabeth Chat and their team “Friends of Arabian Sport Horses,” once again greeted the riders from Europe in the well-proven Western Training Center Schulz in Wiener Neustadt, Austria,

in a familiar and friendly atmosphere. Perhaps to emphasize the fun factor as well, four special awards were given that were not directly related to performance, i.e. for the longest trop or the youngest participant. Twenty-four-year-old Penthor received an award for the oldest horse. Born in 1994, Penthor is a typical Abakan son out of Pengona HT, and he has proven himself several times under the western saddle for the Dutch family van Duyvenbode. In 2012, Penthor had already received the WAHO Trophy from the Dutch Breed Association. “Older Arabians are not uncommon at the European Championships. We have several participants who were 20 years and older,” says Elisabeth Chat, underlining what the breed has long been praised for, its longevity.

interpretation of “Malificent.” Dieter and Evelyn Rueß bred the 2009 born mare Was Zahim Zarina, who is out of Russian-bred Was Tarisha Bint Taraszena. Zahim Zarina’s sire, Zid Ibn El Zahim, is a highly successful stallion in western sports under Martin Pauli.

Team Germany was the major winner of the European Championships, accomplishing five gold, three silver and four bronze medals. Bred and owned by Edith Lipp, the elegant grey gelding Haifi El Sorrento, and his proven rider Susanne Hoyler were one step ahead in three competitions. The pair won Gold in Classic Pleasure, Traditional Arabian Riding, and Classic All Around, plus a Bronze medal in classical Dressage, a Prix St. George exam. Haifi El Sorrento is a son of the premium stallion and European Champion BS Specific. Was Zahims Zarina, under Sabrina Pauli, had been the star of last year’s European Championships and didn’t disappoint her fans in 2018. Four medals went to the chestnut mare, who won Gold in the Western Trail and Western All-Around, as well as Silver in Reining and bronze in Western Pleasure. In addition, Was Zahims Zarina started under Sabrina Pauli in the costume class with a magnificent

Dutch rider Paulette Zorn was once again successful in the western division. Her partner in crime is the 17-year-old, Russian-bred Fabanco (Dinar x Passionata). Both provided a wonderful picture in the Western Pleasure competition and the judges rewarded them with Gold. In addition, Paulette and Fabanco won Silver in Western All-Around. “In the past 10 years, we have become a really good team, Fabanco and me. We achieved Dutch Champion in Western Pleasure, Western Horsemanship, Trail and Hunter 11 times. The Dutch Kennel Club honored him even, in 2014, with the WAHO Trophy which was a special moment!” Was Zahims Zarina (Zid Ibn El Zahim x Was Tarisha Bint Taraszena)

Breeder Mario Matt blazed a trail. At national and international shows, horses with the prefix “MM” have been winning many championships, and now the 8-year-old MM Sandrine (QR Marc x Sayonarah El Bri, by CH El Brillo) proves that show horses can also compete under saddle. After a year of intensive training, Andre Reitermayr skillfully presented the mare and Mario Matt happily received Silver European Champion Western Pleasure.

Team Austria followed in the team ranking with two gold, six silver and three bronze medals. Leona Dries on Baikal’s Shangrila (out of Desert Safanad), celebrated a special Western win, bringing home Gold in Reining. Born at Gut Fronleitenhof, Baikal’s Shangrila’s sire, Baikal, is a well-known champion in western sports. In 2014, Baikal’s Shangrila already accomplished European Champion All-Around and Silver European Champion Reining. Then her breeder decided to give her a break to prove Shangrila in the breeding barn. After delivering two beautiful fillies, the bay mare has been back under the saddle for about half a year. Once learned, never forgotten, Baikal’s Shangrila presented herself with a lot of heart and energy. The Austrian Isabel Bartlechner and her bay mare Valerie (Dormane x Oso Valentina), won Gold in the Ladies Side Saddle competition, as well as Silver in Classic Pleasure, much to the delight of Elisabeth Chat, who bred Valerie.

QUOTES Why choose the Arabian horse for under saddle, and why do you think the Arabian is so suitable for this work? as well as in the dexterity of trail and the fast-paced reining and working cow horse/cutting. We also see them shine in the traditional ladies side saddle and traditional Arabian riding. In short, a versatile horse with exceptional character!

MARGOT CHAZEL (ENDURANCE RIDER) Pure Arab horses have been used for endurance races for centuries. They are the best breed for long distance races. Although they are lighter than most of the breeds, they are very resiliant and strong headed. Arabians have an iron spirit; they have a “knife between the teeth,” as we say in French! They also are very smart beings which makes the connection between the horse and rider very strong. If you earn their trust, they will give you everything they have. An Arabian horse isn’t the “animal I ride,” it is my partner. He is the legs, I am the eyes, and we share the brain.

ANDRE REITERMAYR (WESTERN TRAINER & RIDER) I’ve been riding Arabian horses for more than two decades. My first horse was an Arabian and this decisively influenced my development in equestrian sports. The then usual methods in western riding were not applicable to my Arabian, so I had to go my own way. This has influenced my training concept, which works very well with Arabian horses, but also with any other horse breed.

Paulette Zorn & Fabanco (Dinar x Passionata - Ligato) © C.Kellner

PAULETTE ZORN (WESTERN RIDER) The friendly temperament and the gentle character of the Arabian horse is well known. He likes to show his affection - provided he is treated fairly - and has a particularly good learning ability and a high willingness to perform. That makes him the ultimate competition horse for me, but also a valued horse friend. His versatility ensures that he can be used in many branches of western sport and excel too; both in the slower western pleasure and western horsemanship,

I already had great success in the open trail classes, and the relatively new ranch riding offers opportunities for the western ridden Arab. Through collaboration with Mario Matt Arabians, I have the opportunity to ride excellent show horses, and it turns out that good, long-term superior breeding of show horses is in line with the demands of modern equitation; especially in the field of pleasure classes, where there is the chance to present these horses highlighting their charisma. My heart will always stick with the Arabian horse, even if other breeds in some disciplines have their merits.

I’ve experienced the Arabian horse as a very willing, sensitive, extremely intelligent horse, who can build an unparalleled bond with human beings. Combined with their elegance and a talent for movement, they spark my enthusiasm again and again, after all these years.

FRANCES ATKINSON (BREEDER, RIDER, JUDGE) After having a hip replacement at the age of 44, I chose our black Arabian stallion Arastin (Simeon Sadik x Arina, by Palas) to ride on my first weeks back in the saddle. Always fearless, ultra-comfortable and gentle, he required the minimum of effort from his rider to go beautifully. He also understood, without a doubt, that I was injured, bruised and slightly vulnerable and carried me like the king he was. He acquiesced to a gentle jog in week two and a lope at week four, despite my best efforts to go faster sooner! Arastin, though an especially great riding Arabian, is not alone in terms of courage and great temperament under saddle Arabian horses. He was western trained, as have been a few we’ve bred and produced over the years, and we think that’s a great way to start them.

Having bred and produced some 30-odd under saddle National Champion winning Arabians (purebred, Anglo and Half-Arabian), I think we shall always ride an Arabian or derivative. We love the lightness of the breed; the fact that a touch of a finger on a rein or whisper of my leg on their side, brings about a change of head carriage or direction with such ease. Sensitivity, courage and versatility makes them amazing under saddle horses, whether it is dressage, jumping, showing or carriage driving, it seems possible to do it all with an Arabian and we have enjoyed each and all of these activities with ours. My heart will always mourn the loss of our wonderful Russian stallion Adres (Drug x Agata, by Gusar) at the tender age of 13 years. Purchased in Holland from Robbie den Hartog at the Tersk sale, this gentle giant, raced with great success, turned into a multichampion halter horse, and then the most fabulous and much admired under saddle stallion. The dearest of friends who later survived hideous pioneering colic surgery and came back to win multiple under saddle championships over five years before the colic returned

I am a very happy owner of the beautiful stallion Meraab Athbah (Sundance Kid V x DA Peace, by Padrons Psyche), who is trained for show jumping. I could not imagine a more loyal and dedicated horse than him. I can read him like an open book. He always shows me when he is bored, when he needs attention or when he just wants to be left alone. He is so obedient, that sometimes it becomes a disadvantage in performing the course, as he listens to me and waits for my decision up to the last moment. Meraab is extremely smart and can be cheeky, as he perfectly knows the level of difficulty of jumping. He is so ambitious, that he is simply bored on the low-level obstacles and then he doesn’t care. Meraab is a real performance horse with the perfect look of an Arabian horse. He combines strength, good mind, braveness and beauty in one. The moment he sees me preparing the equipment and packing my groom box, and when he is showered and all pampered, he knows he will be going to the show. When he arrives to the showground, he knows exactly what to do. Despite being a stallion with Arabian blood among all these big show jumping horses, he goes to the show stable and settles down immediately; he is so well mannered. He never makes trouble for me. The moment he enters the warm-up arena, the world stops existing for him. There is only me who matters, and he is fully concentrated on his performance.

Frances Atkinson

and claimed his life despite our best efforts. Indeed, it is our Adres son Nykolaasz (x Nyinska Kossack, by Balaton) who show jumps at 1.20 m. As judges in the UK, we are required to ride every exhibit in a class. In Horse of the Year Show’s (HOYS) qualifying classes, I’ve ridden up to 87 exhibits in one afternoon. With other breeds and types of horse, this can be an exhausting task, but never with the Arabians, whose ease of ride makes for an enjoyable judging assignment.

MARIA BEMONG (SHOW JUMPING) I have been riding Arabian horses for years. I’ve broke in many young horses and never had a bad experience. The procedure was always the same, to gain their trust from the ground up and then they allow me to do anything with them.

A HT Abroad

When I enter the jumping course with him, I never feel fear, I never hesitate or doubt if he will make all the jumps. Some courses can be demanding technically, but he always goes all out, giving me his whole heart. I always have a smile, as he is just a pure pleasure to compete with. It is never a competition, it is just fun for us to show off. When we compete at the open show jumping competitions and the distance between the fences is set up for big horses, we never have a problem, as Meraab strides like a normal show jumping horse. He is my soulmate, he is the horse with the greatest mind I have ever had a chance to ride. As a professional rider, I work also with warmblood horses, and I see a big difference in the way of learning by an Arabian vs. other breeds. Arabians are just so smart and witty.

TARA DEN HARTOG (DRESSAGE) The Arabian is suitable for dressage because they are very intelligent and learn quickly, and their nice character enhances the competition more for me. When you build a bond with them, they go through the fire for you.
