SUMMER 2017 Every day—all over the world—people of all ages, from all walks of life and from diverse cultures can be found in their barn or pasture, communing with their Arabian horse. They are people who have spent years and even lifetimes studying the breed with the avid fascination only a true enthusiast can maintain. They are the breeders: the guardians of precious bloodlines, the life’s blood of the industry, the architects of the future.

Without the breeders, there would be no Arabian horse. It, like so many other breeds and species, would have disappeared from the face of the Earth. AHT Abroad is dedicated to shining a light on the accomplishments of breeders from many lands. Our regional features bring attention to breeding programs large and small; this issue we are focusing on the many wonderful farms and programs in Scandinavia. We are also pleased to introduce the stories of selected small breeders from America who are making a difference on the world stage. Yes, the Arabian horse would be nowhere without the dedication, passion, and commitment of breeders. From the deserts of Arabia and the Middle East to the fiords of Norway, from the Swiss Alps to South Africa, from the jungles of Brazil to the peaks of the American Rocky Mountains, it is the tenacity of the breeders to which we owe our gratitude and our livelihood. As the summer show season begins to unfold in Europe, we hope you will enjoy our Summer 2017 issue—welcome Abroad!

There are certain horses that touch you in a way no others do; horses that leave an image in your life that you cannot let go of. *Padron winning National Champion Stallion was one of them. The impact he has had in so many pedigrees and breeding programs is un-touchable. We are honored to have him in our breeding program and success.

Fadi Al Shaqab A Portrait Of Exquisite Beauty

by Jeff Wallace

W

hen Fadi Al Shaqab, alongside his handler and co-breeder Michael Byatt, made his victory pass in Las Vegas earlier this year, it was a very sweet moment not only for Michael, but also for Sheikh Hamad as well, as it represented in that special moment all the goodness these two brilliant horsemen have accomplished as a tried-and-true team. Even more importantly, they are now back in the twosome saddle of success to continue their winning ways. It was Sheikh Hamad who sent the legendary father-son duo of Gazal Al Shaqab and Marwan Al Shaqab respectively, to Texas for Michael to manage and present in top American show rings. These two brilliant breeding horses are the maternal sire line of Fadi Al Shaqab’s pedigree as Abha Myra, dam of Fadi, is a daughter of the “Mighty Marwan” and a stunning and elegant swan awash in grey. His sire—no less a show ring and breeding sensation—Besson Carol and grandsire, the ethereal Parys El Jamaal, stallions that also called Michael Byatt Arabians home most of their lives, represent the magnificent sire line of Ali Jamaal, a son of Ruminaja Ali, grandsire also of Gazal. This example typifies the strength of good linebreeding when the stock being used is robust while displaying near-perfect breed type, as well. A HT Abroad

| 114 | Summer 2017

Today, Fadi Al Shaqab is irrevocably regarded as the most important maternal grandson of Marwan to grace the earth. His unique lineage, representing some of the finest bloodlines ever made available to our breed, makes Fadi a breeder’s dream. Add to his celebrated equation the fact that the two men behind some of the most historic breeding stallions the Arabian horse has ever known is once again teamed up behind the exquisite Fadi Al Shaqab, is a not-so-subtle implication that this exquisite bay stallion will most certainly be the subsequent revolutionary chapter in the Gazal/ Marwan obsession, this time on the dam’s side. Fadi Al Shaqab, after winning a World Champion Stallion title with Giacomo Capacci and a Las Vegas Gold Supreme Champion Stallion title with Michael Byatt, is proving beyond a doubt, to be one of the Great Ones, from Al Shaqab. While we weave a rich tapestry throughout our lives with the Arabian horse, in the end, it is our relationships with great friends and breeders that matter most. Time spent with one of my greatest and dearest friends, Sigi, has given me memories which are amongst my most treasured. The profound impact Sigi has had on my life and the lessons she taught me guide me daily. Her greatest gift is her phenomenal daughter, Janina, whose friendship I hold dear in my heart. The respect and adoration I have for the Om El Arab breeding program runs deep to my core. How Dan and Maureen Grossman Built Their Dream

A HT Abroad

by THERESA CARDAMONE

Maureen and Dan Grossman are Indiana residents by choice and by heritage. Although they have deep family ties to the Midwest, life had taken the Grossmans to a variety of settings as young

adults. After meeting during their college years, they married and relocated to Texas, where they stayed until Dan finished his surgical residency. In 1980, they decided to return to their roots in Indiana, where they would nurture their family and establish themselves. Maureen Grossman says that she gets her “horse energy” from her father, who was always bringing home grade horses (such as the unforgettable King Leonardo and Biggie Rat), from local auctions to see if they would work out. She remembers idyllic days where she and her sister raced half-broke horses across the fields, oblivious to any lurking squirrel hole or other hidden danger. Maureen’s first Arabian—who she fondly describes as “a bit of a knucklehead”—came her way as a pre-teen.

It was during her ensuing teenage years that Maureen enjoyed a fruitful relationship with Desert Count, the beautiful, dappled-grey, Raffles-bred gelding who inspired her enduring love for Arabian horses. He fulfilled her dreams of excellence by becoming a Champion at her local 4-H Fair. Her memories of those days are of a tight-knit family, where everyone was happily involved in the show experience. “At those shows, we unloaded the horse and tied him onto the trailer until it was time for our class,” Maureen recalls. “Everyone had their jobs to do, it really was a family affair.”

The Grossmans continued to participate in every aspect of their growing business, acquiring a wealth of knowledge in the process. In the fall of 1992, they were sitting in the arena at the US Nationals with David Boggs when he mentioned that the legendary Bey Shah was for sale. Danny took a minute to absorb the news, turned to Boggs, and said, “Let’s go buy him”! Although they were aware of what his breeding challenges might be, the Grossmans did not hesitate to step through the door of opportunity that owning such a famous and influential stallion opened for them. The sale was consummated by the end of the evening. With the purchase of Bey Shah, Stone Ridge Arabians entered a whole new dimension of the Arabian business. Maureen remembers the surreal morning that Bey Shah arrived in Minnesota. “We had put him on an enormous 747 to fly him from California to stand at Midwest with David Boggs,” Maureen relates. “He arrived very early in the morning before the sun rose, so it was cold. But my whole family was there. We watched as the plane landed, then the nose cap slowly opened, and out came Bey Shah’s stall. It zoomed along on a little conveyor belt, straight into the trailer. The sun was rising the whole time. It was quite a morning!” The horse trailer was driven clear into the indoor arena at Midwest, where the still-occupied stall was unloaded. After a few minutes, the transport stall door was finally opened, and Bey Shah emerged for the first time. “Do you know Bey Shah?” Maureen asks. “When we took him out, immediately the tail goes over his back, he’s snorting everywhere, it was just awesome. Danny took the lead and walked him all around, it really was great fun. Promoting him was exciting and was also a lot of hard work. He required special handling because he was 16 and only had one testicle when we bought him. But it was worth it because he produced amazing babies for us and even more so for other breeders.” The Grossman’s came up with the very successful idea of selling out the stallion’s breedings in packages, allowing buyers the option of using or reselling them as they wished. After Bey Shah died, there wasn’t a lot of breeding activity at Stone Ridge. Instead, they concentrated on performance horses when both of their daughters began to ride and show. In the interim, they had acquired a couple of horses for Mo to ride including Tara’s Tribulation, who carried her to the Canadian National Championship in Half-Arabian English Pleasure. She had also purchased a talented horse for her 13-year old daughter Ashley (Anne Grossman Fox) to

one of the most important stallions in the industry.” DA Valentino was the Canadian National Champion Stallion as a three-year old in addition to being named U.S. National Champion Junior Stallion and U.S. National Champion Futurity Colt. DA Valentino earned additional U.S. National Champion Stallion titles in 2007 and 2008. Far from resting on his laurels as a show horse, DA Valentino has outdone himself as a sire. “In 2016, he had been gone for about five years and he was the U.S. Leading Halter Sire, and he was the leading sire in Europe and the Middle East. He is still going on and on with his babies.” DA Valentino has sired numerous National Champions who have gone on to produce champions of their own, not only in the U.S., but also in Australia, Europe, the Middle East, and South America. Maureen has a special place in her heart for one of Stone Ridge Arabians’ most decorated homebred champions. “Right before DA Valentino died, we bought an embryo right to the mare RD Fabreanna at a live auction. All the proceeds were going to support St. Jude’s Children’s Hospitals, which was awesome because it was a win for everybody and we felt great about it. We collected Valentino to use for that breeding, which as it turned out, was his final one.”

Ansata Bint Bukra: Through Ansata Bint Misr A Modern View On Ancient Knowledge, Part 1

by Susanne B Ösche

The glistening white stallion Ansata Hejazi is a marvelous echo of the Great Pyramid of Giza, the oldest monument on the list of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. He too, is strongly built like that phenomenon of human construction. The Pyramid’s unique engineering has always been the subject of much debate among scholars, just like the pedigree of Arabian horses. Regardless of its near perfect proportions, such a structure needs a solid foundation, just as Ansata Hejazi’s pedigree is a reflection of the kingly horses of each successive generation. Similar to the ancient Step Pyramid of Saqqara, it was wisely built step by step, and among the cornerstones is the illustrious, globally influential Ansata Bint Bukra. A HT Abroad

| 196 | Summer 2017

A

nsata Bint Bukra’s story began in Egypt, where the Pyramids of Giza rise from the west bank of the Nile River, contemporary witnesses of ancient times, perfectly symmetrical behemoths imposed upon a flat, barren landscape. Some thirty kilometers away, in the year 1960, a grey yearling filly faced an uncertain future on the sandy paddocks of Egypt’s state stud farm, El Zahraa. The filly’s name was Husnia, meaning “beautiful” and she descended from fine parents. Her sire was the highly valued Nazeer and her dam the classic beauty and true matriarch of the breed, Bukra, by Shahloul out of Bint Sabah. Nevertheless, Husnia’s future was unsecure as she was crippled shortly after birth. An accident injured her hip and damaged her front legs. Still, she attracted the attention of a young American couple, Donald and Judith Forbis. “Call it a magnetic attraction. Charisma. Classic beauty—she had ‘it!’ And of course, we loved her mother and father,” Judith Forbis remembers. “She also had an older full sister already named Bint Bukra. Even though she was very nice and eventually made a fine broodmare, little Husnia stole our hearts. She was very similar in type to her dam, with an even more beautiful head and stronger bodied. Although we tried to buy her as a yearling, the African Horse Sickness had prevented any horses from being imported to America from Egypt.” The ban was lifted when Husnia was a mature mare and had already been serviced by Sameh. “Looking back, when we purchased her we did not know if she was in foal, or if she could ever bear a foal because of her injured hip. Furthermore, the EAO told us there was no guarantee she could give birth,” says Judith. “Nevertheless, we took a huge financial gamble on buying her at that time in our newlywed lives. But sometimes you have that gut feeling that it is right—and it was. Husnia surprised us by arriving in foal to Sameh and delivering a bay filly—Ansata Bint Misr—another blessing who became a most valuable foundation mare for us.” Once Husnia arrived on North American soil, she was registered under a different name. “We changed Husnia’s name to honor her dam, Bukra—the mare General von Szandtner considered ‘prima Stute’,” Judith explains. “We knew that Bukra meant tomorrow and Bint Bukra proved to be ‘the daughter of tomorrow’. Add to that Ansata—the Key of Life, and the name was truly prophetic.” The name could not have been any more perfect. Ansata Bint Bukra produced ten foals, among them seven fillies by five different stallions. Each female line has been globally prominent, with the two most influential branches of the line to date garnered with harmonious, appealing horses: the grey Ansata Shah Zaman daughter, Ansata Rosetta, and the bay Ansata Bint Misr, by Sameh. A HT Abroad

| 197 | Summer 2017

If Ansata Bint Bukra had produced only these two daughters, they would have secured her status as a significant dam forever. Had Ansata Bint Misr been Ansata Bint Bukra’s only daughter, Ansata Bint Bukra would remain unforgettable. The substantial Ansata Bint Misr, blessed with the smooth topline and powerfully built hindquarters attributed to her magnificent sire Sameh, had a somewhat short neck, though her head was crowned with big, dark eyes. This bay mare became a keystone in the Ansata program and is in the tail female line of the most important straight Egyptian stallions. Thanks to influential sires like Ansata Sinan or Ansata

Hejazi, Ansata Bint Bukra can be found in the pedigrees of today’s compelling show horses such as the unanimous 2016 Scottsdale Egyptian Heritage Champion Stallion Monther Al Nasser, or the young sire of multiple champions, S.M.A. Magic One. “It is exceptionally rewarding to see the Ansata influence spreading out even more on the global Arabian horse scene,” says Judith Forbis. “We have always been involved in breeding our stallions to mares other than Straight Egyptian Arabians. Breeders and owners of these outcrosses did miraculously well in the show ring. The strength of Ansata Bint Bukra must also be credited to the stallions she and her daughters were bred to in the Ansata herd,” she adds, “for instance Ansata Ibn Halima, Ansata Ibn Sudan, and Ansata

Shah Zaman, as they propelled her legacy forward as did those offspring in her direct tail female line.” When Ansata Bint Misr was bred to Ansata Shah Zaman, the Morafic son out of Ansata Bint Mabrouka, she brought two exceptional grey daughters, Ansata Damietta and Ansata Delilah. The latter produced the Ansata Ibn Halima son Ansata El Mabrouk, who is the maternal grandsire of the hauntingly beautiful ZT Sharuby, a national champion in both Argentina and Qatar, as well as an Egyptian Event Champion Mare in Kentucky and World Champion Senior Mare in Paris.

Ansata Delilah (Ansata Shah Zaman x Ansata Bint Misr) with foal Ansata Imperial (by Ansata Ibn Sudan).

With her very first foal, Ansata Delilah made herself immortal through the Ansata Ibn Sudan son Ansata Imperial. He became a halter champion and a sire of such magnitude, that his influence can still be seen today, thanks to his international champion son Imperial Imdal. It was, however, Ansata Delilah’s 1988-born, grey Ansata Abu Sudan daughter Ansata Sudarra who ensured her sustainable influence. Taller, and more elegant than her dam, Ansata Sudarra also inherited the independent attitude of Ansata Delilah. In combination with Ansata Halim Shah, doubling the influence of Ansata Bint Bukra through the aforementioned Ansata Rosetta, Ansata Sudarra produced the exquisite full sisters Ansata Nefertiti and Ansata Nefara, as well as their full brother, the stallion Ansata Hejazi.

Ansata Bint Bukra in her later years.

Ansata Hejazi was a horse that I believe was ‘divinely appointed’ to exalt the breed by perpetuating the ideal qualities that have defined it for thousands of years,” Judith Forbis wrote in her recently launched book Ansata Hejazi - Born to Rule. Foaled in 1992, the well-balanced, exceptionally good-moving grey stallion with the large, dark eyes, became a herd sire for Ansata. time and thanks to Mohammed Jassim Al Marzouq, Ansata Hejazi went to his Ajmal Stud in Kuwait in 1999. Known today as the “King of Kuwait”, Ansata Hejazi inspired Arabian horse enthusiasts, artists and breeders alike, as he restored the devastated Arabian horse breeding there until his death in 2015. He was one of those exceptional stallions, who sired both outstanding daughters and sons. Ajmal Tameen, by Ansata Hejazi out of Tabanya, has proven to be an influential sire for Ajmal Stud just like his late paternal half-brother Ansata Nile Echo was for Al Naif Stud, Qatar. Female beauties such as Ajmal Moneera, out of Hamasa Massuda and Ajmal Naderah, out of Najma Al Rayyan, adorn Ajmal Stud. Seldom has a single stallion had such a profound impact on breeding in a single country. In 1992, it was Ansata Hejazi’s full sister Ansata Nefara who produced another important stallion of modern times: Ansata Sinan, by Prince Fa Moniet. Ansata Imperial (Ansata Ibn Sudan x Ansata Delilah) A stunning, pure white, classic individual, Ansata Sinan became a showstopper in Europe for his new owners Vera and Peter Stoessel. When Ansata Sinan returned to the USA in 1999, he had created his own strong dynasty on European soil through two of his sons. AS Sinans Pacha, out of Saskia RJ, was the 1999 World Reserve Junior Champion and sire of Ajman Stud’s amazing Escape Ibn Navarrone-D, who was 2005 All Nations Cup Senior Champion and World Senior Champion Stallion. Also Khidar, out of Elizja, the 2005 European Senior Champion and World Reserve Senior Champion Stallion. The 2016 Dubai Gold Champion Stallion Shanghai EA and his son Excalibur EA, who achieved the same title this year, are excellent current representatives of this influence. Ansata Sinan is also the sire of Eternity Ibn Navarrone-D, the 2015 Platinum World Champion Stallion. One of the rare European-bred Straight Egyptian Arabian sons is Mishaal HP, out of Mesoudah-M, who became important as a sire for Arabians Ltd., USA.

Ansata Delilah did not rest on the laurels Ansata Sudarra brought to the family. Three years earlier, in 1979, Ansata Delilah brought forth a fascinating filly by Ansata Ibn Halima which set the bar high for the future; the deep chestnut Ansata Samantha. Her lovely head was adorned by huge black eyes, and when Ansata Samantha looked at you, she touched your soul. “Her disposition was as sweet as her countenance was beautiful,” Judith Forbis describes her, “and she always appeared to be in a good humor.”

Ansata Hejazi (Ansata Halim Shah x Ansata Sudarra)

back in 1989, he looked like a cute teddy bear with his winter coat and huge eyes.

Ansata Samantha, just like her grand dam Ansata Bint Bukra, produced 10 foals, seven fillies and three colts—a list full of evocative names who spread out the influence of this branch in the USA, the Middle East, and Europe. Ansata El Salaam, by Ansata Ibn Shah, was a chestnut look-alike to his dam. When the little colt, tired from the long trip, got off the airplane in Frankfurt, Germany

The mare Ansata Bint Sudan, out of Ansata Bint Bukra, accompanied Ansata El Salaam to Germany along with her own son, the young stallion Ansata Amir Zaman who had been purchased by the Seidlitz family and was to be leased temporarily to the Kretschmann’s stud. Ansata Amir Zaman has had a remarkable impact and his influence can be found in several well-known breeding programs. Long-time and devoted breeder Marion Richmond of Australia, values the influence of the Bukra blood, “The beautiful mare Bukra appears in most of the stallions used at Simeon Stud, i.e. Simeon Shifran or Simeon Sahron, through her son Ghazal. Mulayh Ibn Mareesa has two lines to Bukra, one through Ansata Amir Zaman. All these stallions are amazing producers and wonderful individuals.” However, this is a separate story, worth being told on its own in the AHT Abroad Winter issue. Back to Heinrich Kretschmann, who imported this illustrious group and was as proud as one can be, having high expectations. When he visited Ansata Stud for the first time, he hardly trusted his eyes. Splendid Ansata Samantha easily caught Kretschmann’s attention, the little colt Ansata El Salaam at her side. “This was the place of my dreams,” Heinrich Kretschmann once said. “The horses literally bewitched me, I simply had no choice but to convince the Forbises to sell me this colt.” Ansata El Salaam sired more than 130 foals in Europe, including national and international show champions. The 2005 German National Reserve Champion Mare, Pyramid Set El Nil and the Premium Mare, Mahrana Al Sabah are among his daughters. The black stallion MadallanMadheen, out of Madinah, was his best-known son. Bred by Ruth and Siegfried Paufler, he was sold as a weanling to Annette and Erwin Escher who built a black Arabian horse breeding program around Madallan until his untimely death at the age of 10. The Eschers knew about the Ansata Bint Bukra potential, as in 1994 they had bought the chestnut Ansata Aya Maria, by Ansata Shah Zaman and out of Ansata Aya Halima, herself a daughter of Ansata Bint Misr. Ansata Aya Maria soon became a valuable broodmare for Escher’s Rothenberg Stud. Another Ansata Samantha son came to Germany for a short time; the powerful and handsome chestnut Ansata Sokar, by Imperial Madheen. Ansata Sokar was later exported to Al Rayyan Farm, Qatar. The exquisite Nawaal Al Rayyan, 2015 U.S. Egyptian Event Gold Champion Junior Filly, is just one of his impressive champion daughters in the Middle East. HH Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Khalid bin Hamad Al Thani, founder and former owner of Al Rayyan Farm, was a great admirer of the Ansata Bint Bukra family, which became a keystone for his breeding program built on the best mares available in the 1990s. The fleabitten Ansata Sharifa, full sister to Ansata El Salaam, created an amazing family through her daughters, G Shafaria and Al Wajba Al Rayyan. This branch of the Ansata Bint Bukra – Ansata Bint Misr family produces remarkable individuals, females as well as males, generation after generation. The 2002-born Sinan Al Rayyan became one of the most influential sires in his new homeland, Kuwait. He is out of Al Wajba Al Rayyan, who is by Safir and out of Ansata Sharifa. Sired by Ansata Sinan, who is out of Ansata Nefara, Sinan Al Rayyan traces back to Ansata Bint Bukra on both sides of his pedigree. The Al Waab Stud-owned Fares Al Rayyan, by Ansata Hejazi out of G Shafaria, also traces back three times to Ansata Bint Bukra.

Ansata Samantha (Ansata Ibn Halima x Ansata Delilah)

Ansata Samantha’s first daughter, the bay Ansata Samarra, by Jamil, produced the superior mares Ansata Sekhmet and Ansata Selket. Eventually, Ansata Samarra and Ansata Sekhmet were sold to Saudi Arabia, and Ansata Selket was exported to Al Rayyan Farm. Beautiful inside and out, Ansata Selket, by Ansata Halim Shah, had the most gorgeous face that won her Most Classic Head recognition in the show ring. This line lives on through Salsabel Al Rayyan and Rayana Al Alia.

Combined with Prince Fa Moniet, Ansata Samantha produced the grey, show-winning Ansata Samsara who was destined to be exported to Kuwait but died tragically before shipment. However, Ansata Samsara left two remarkable sons by Ansata Hejazi: Ansata Safeer in Saudi Arabia and Ansata Al Murtajiz in Kuwait. The list of celebrities from the Ansata Bint Bukra – Ansata Bint Misr family seems to be infinite. The same goes for the Ansata Bint Bukra – Ansata Rosetta branch, but this is another story which we will unfold for you in our AHT Abroad Winter issue. Ansata Bint Bukra’s other daughters, Ansata Bint Sudan, Ansata Regina and Ansata Rhodora, also founded prosperous branches in Europe and Egypt, the Gulf and South America. The total influence of this family is almost beyond belief. The ancient pyramids stretched to noble heights, and so did Ansata Bint Bukra. Looking at the pedigrees of her numerous descendants, it is easy to see how wisely the generations were built on a strong foundation, each pillar grand and sublime. Considering that each individual horse stands above the two parents below it—as if forming the shape of a triangle or pyramid—Judith Forbis constructed a new way of looking at a pedigree, offering a modern new observation built on ancient knowledge. “Rather than using a traditional pedigree that is read horizontally, and therefore implies looking from the present back into the past, I constructed Hejazi’s pedigree in the form of a pyramid,” she writes in her new book. “This evokes the idea of a horse being built on a foundation composed on individual pyramids of three that, step by step, leads to the individual at the top.” In the Foreword to her new book, Forbis quoted Shakespeare who wrote: “From fairest creatures we desire increase, that thereby beauty’s rose might never die.” Though crippled, this fairest creature, the beautiful Ansata Bint Bukra—and her descendants like Ansata Hejazi— created pyramids to assure that, indeed, “beauty’s rose” might live forever. The magnificent Al Shaqab Equestrian Centre in Doha once again provided the perfect backdrop for a strong competition. Founded by His Highness the Father Emir, this spectacular venue saw some of the best Arabian horses in the world which fought for victory. It was the electrifying climax of the Qatar show season at this world-class equestrian facility, which is a part of the Qatar Foundation. It is easy to see that Qatar has received multi-billion dollar investments in its infrastructure to promote the equestrian and purebred Arabian horse sector during the last four decades.

The bright chestnut Abha Qatar added another precious title to his already long list by achieving Gold Champion Senior Stallion for his proud owner HH Prince Abdullah bin Fahad Al Saud, KSA, and the ultra-feminine Tehama Ballalina, owned by Al Zobair Stud, UAE, received Gold Champion Senior Mare. Al Shaqab Stud proved their expertise in breeding exceptional horses one again, in the junior championships with three Golds.

he magic of the legendary sword Excalibur is still alive. Its power was shining bright during the Senior Stallion Championship in Dubai when the glistening white stallion, Excalibur EA, faced a battle against highly decorated and globally renowned stallions. Like his exceptional sire Shanghai EA in 2016, Excalibur EA accomplished Gold, with Baanderos by Marwan Al Shaqab winning Silver. Dubai is always the arena for big names. One who came to Dubai for the first time was Ahmed El Talawy from Egypt. “I tried to prepare everything perfectly,” says Ahmed, “my horses, as well as my team. The results are exciting, we came with five horses and gained two Silver and two Bronze medals. It was an amazing experience in this strong competition.” And judge Terry Holmes of the USA adds, “What’s unique about the Dubai show is, it is a fantastic location. People want to come and enjoy the city, as well as the horses.” A HT Abroad

The 2017

Arabian Breeders World Cup Where Nations Unite

I

Stories by Laurelle Anderson, photos by Moffatt Photography & Design

n 2017, the Arabian Breeders World Cup (ABWC) returned to South Point Equestrian Complex in glamorous Las Vegas for the 11th consecutive year from April 12-15th. Once again, it provided a solid platform of stellar International competition for over 4,000 attendees, with a flowing agenda of festive activities to make it the most unifying celebration of the purebred Arabian horse, while drawing the highest in quality breeding stock available today. This is where the ‘Who’s Who’ of the Arabian horse breed, along with avid newcomers and devoted enthusiasts, all eagerly participate in this prestigious affair as they gather from all corners of the globe. Owners and breeders representing 36 states and 24 countries, brought 216 horses to be showcased in 34 halter division classes, including AHBA Legacy and Auction Futurity classes, and this year the prize money payouts topped $201,624! All this and more, over four action-packed days! The ABWC is a dynamic show that allows for new friendships to develop, old ones are reunited, experiences are shared, and passions are fueled while everyone anticipates how the days will unfold. Awards are given, winners crowned, and dreams are ignited! It is a whirlwind of enthusiasm with unstoppable excitement … AND, it’s completely contagious for those who are smitten! In true Las Vegas style, the official red carpet entrance provided a captivating visual display, leading attendees past magnificent artistry, official awards and notable vendors with garnished tables of treasured merchandise, before descending to the arena floor. Blue and white tables encompassed the show ring for the best viewing possible, with floodlights focused on center ring, shedding an inviting hue between two life-size Arabian horse bronze statues that perfectly exemplified the prestige of this show and highlighted where five internationally renowned judges would determine those individual horses deemed most worthy of the highest scores. Each day, the show represented a specific division of competition; first amateurs, then mares and fillies, followed by colts and stallions with the fourth and final day of Championships and Award ceremonies. By its own intentional design, the show wrapped up by late afternoon, thereby allowing for a variety of glitzy Las Vegas activities, or moments to relax with friends, sharing knowledge, and experiences and creating new ones to further bond within this unique global family. This year, there were two extraordinary events scheduled during the ABWC show for enthusiasts to attend. On Thursday evening, Wayne Newton’s Aramus Arabians extended a warm welcome for all to attend their Open House affair at his esteemed Casa de Shenandoah Ranch, and Friday evening was electrified by the highly anticipated IntArah Dream Embryo Auction. Both were exhilarating and have inspired new chapters within our Arabian community. As the final day dawned, owners, breeders and loyal enthusiasts gathered with eager anticipation to witness those exceptional horses that would be crowned Champions. Indeed, the final scores from the judging decisions gave way to exhilarating championship outcomes that will continue to shape the future of this proud breed. Also honored, were: the 2017 AHBA Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, His Highness The Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, founder of Al Shaqab and owner of Al Rayyan Farm; 2017 AHBA Handler of Excellence Award recipient Ted Carson; and AHBA Breeders Cup recipient, Aljassimya Farm.

This extraordinary Breeders Cup show is truly a product of the Arabian Horse Breeders Alliance and many dedicated show committee organizers who are constantly and diligently hard at work behind the scenes. We asked Show Manager Taryl O’Shea, who she would like to give a ‘shout-out-to’, in recognition of their unwavering support at this show. Taryl didn’t hesitate with her reply, “This year the ‘shout-out’ goes to our wonderful scoring team, Ron Harden, Riyan Rivero, Meagan and Ashley Katzakian. They did an amazing job and they worked hard to ensure there were no glitches. We extend a huge thank you to them.” Perhaps it was in the Opening Ceremony of that final day that lends insight to a simple soulful truth and best summarizes this Arabian horse competition. As the lights are slowly dimmed, silence consumes the arena and the Nellis Air Force Base Honor Guard present the colored flags as they march forward to center ring. Ron Armstrong’s vocals provide a heartfelt national anthem, followed by “We Are The World,” as this hallowed tune stretches across the arena to where several owners, breeders and participants begin to emerge with their flags, of all nations represented at this amazing show. It is impossible not to be moved by the significance of this ceremony, as emotion ripples over everyone in the arena—it is truly encompassing. As the show draws to a close, many will reflect on these moments of clarity—they may even remain unspoken. Yet, it was in those quietest moments that a much stronger theme seems to proclaim … “We are the world of the Arabian horse, and this, is our Celebration!”

Dream Embryo Auction

rom its inception in November of 2011, in Brazil, where the first IntArah Dream Embryo Auction took place, to its relocation in 2015 to Las Vegas, where it perfectly complemented the prestigious and internationally acclaimed Arabian Breeders World Cup, this revolutionary concept first introduced by The IntArah Group, did not disappoint. Once again it proved to be not only a glamorous ‘must-attend’ auction, but the successful outcome made it clear that there was a certain demand for this type of Auction. ‘The Showroom’ at South Point Hotel played host to the 3rd 2017 Dream auction, where it capably provided an elegant affair with blazing visuals and another thrilling evening of outstanding results. The highest selling lot was an unborn foal out of Honey’s Delight RB sired by FA El Rasheem that sold for $210,000. With its results yet again matching that of the first auction in Brazil, by evenings end, IntArah had reached over $1.9 million in dream sales, making it clear that this exceptional auction, is not only a trend … it was paving a way for the future of the Arabian breed. Without question, the forward thinking IntArah Dream Embryo Auction directors and their unwavering commitment to quality offerings, seems to have rolled the Arabian community back to another era when auctions were filled with anticipation, and attendees prepared for an evening of thrills and excitement, knowing that the unpredictable might also unfold. It was an evening of familiar and enthusiastic faces, all wearing smiles of hope as they waited for the gavel to fall… ‘SOLD’! This, is where champagne wishes of Arabian horse dreams come true.

Fanaticaa *

THE PEARL OF AL OWAIDAH AR ABIAN STUD

by BETH ELLEN H U NZIK ERÂ

The Arabian Breeders World Cup in Las Vegas, Nevada, is the most prestigious international show in North America. The level of competition rivals that of the most important shows

in Europe and the Middle East, with many highly acclaimed international champions vying for the highest honor: the title of Breeders World Cup Gold Supreme Champion. Â

Over the past 11 years, many European, Middle Eastern, and World Champions have

competed and won at the Arabian Breeders World Cup. However, in 2017, the world was introduced to a three-year-old filly unlike any they have seen before. She created history at the show and is destined to take her place among the legends of the breed as one of the most exquisite mares of all time. She is unforgettable; she is Fanaticaa.

As the World Cup show began, the name everyone was whispering was Fanaticaa. Could she possibly be as exotic as they had heard, what they had seen on social media. The anticipation for Fanaticaa’s class was high, but no one was prepared for what happened next. When David Boggs walked into the arena leading what looked like a dream, the crowd was almost silent, and then they erupted into a roar of cheers and applause for the most exquisite Fanaticaa. All eyes were on her throughout her presentation. Her movement was graceful, yet powerful, her pose showcased her near flawless conformation, and her beauty captured the hearts of the crowd and the judges. She received seven scores of 20 points—the most of all females presented at the show—and she was awarded the highest score of the class, making her the clear winner. Her class was done, but Fanaticaa was not; she and David now set their sights on the championships ahead of them. The stakes were high, even in a city like Las Vegas, but David and his team were committed to bringing the beautiful Fanaticaa to her fullest potential and her ultimate victory. On Saturday, there was great excitement and hope at the Midwest stalls as they prepared Fanaticaa for her presentation in the championships. She was groomed to perfection; now it was all up to her. Once again, Fanaticaa entered the arena, accompanied by David Boggs, looking like a queen: regal, graceful, and poised for greatness. She showed beautifully; she was there to prove she deserved her crown and she would not be denied. As the judges moved from one contestant to the next, there was no question who was the crowd favorite, or the judge’s favorite. Fanaticaa was crowned the 2017 Arabian Breeders World Cup Gold Supreme Champion Junior Mare.

While the world watched Fanaticaa receive her title, covered in colorful ribbons and beautiful roses, there was one special person watching from afar with special interest, Sheikh Naif Fahad Al Owaidah of Al Owaidah Arabian Stud in Riyadh, in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Only weeks before the Breeders World Cup, Sheikh Naif successfully secured a lease of the extraordinary Fanaticaa. Thus, his interest in her victory was deeply personal and meaningful. It was his greatest hope that Fanaticaa would receive the recognition she deserved and his hope was fulfilled. In fact, Fanaticaa made Arabian horse history as the only straight Egyptian mare to earn the title of Gold Supreme Champion, proving she is unlike any other mare—ever. Sheikh Naif Fahad Al Owaidah is the owner of Al Owaidah Development Company and Al Owaidah Arabian Stud. He is one of the most successful businessmen in all of Saudi Arabia. His business is his profession, but Arabian horses have been his passion since he was a child. Sheikh Naif is a wise and patient man. His first priority was making his business a success. He waited to pursue his love of horses and purchased his first Arabian in 2014. Sheikh Naif is interested in exceptional horses, unique horses unlike any others. Sheikh Naif ’s search began with a call to David Boggs. He told David he was in search of the extraordinary; he certainly chose the right man for the job. David’s encyclopedic knowledge of the breed from a global perspective is amazing and his photographic memory of horses is uncanny. Almost as soon as Sheikh Naif and David’s conversation ended, a certain filly came to David’s mind, a filly he had seen more than a year earlier. Even then, he believed she had the beauty to be an international show ring super star and the genetic potential to be an exceptional producer. Her name was Fanaticaa and he had to see her again.

THE STRAIGHT EGYPTIAN WONDER

(Al Raheb AA x Faleenah El Masr)

David called Raymond Mazzei of Furioso Farms, the breeder and owner of Fanaticaa. Raymond Mazzei is a man well known around the world for his unrelenting passion for the Arabian horse. He has been a breeder and judge for over 30 years and according to Raymond, Fanaticaa is his greatest achievement. Fanaticaa is by Al Raheeb AA, bred by Ariela Arabians and owned by Muhsen Onallah. Raymond had leased the stallion for two years. Al Raheeb AA is sired by the immortal Laheeb, the great progenitor of many great straight Egyptian sons and daughters, as well as those he sired while on lease to the Polish State Studs in the late 1990s. Al Raheeb AA is out of The Vision HG, a mare with two lines to The Minstril through both her sire, Thee Desperado, and her dam, Belle Staar. Fanaticaa’s dam is the lovely Faleenah El Masr. Raymond Mazzei purchased her when she was just a yearling at the Egyptian Event in Lexington, Kentucky. According to Raymond, Faleenah exuded quality, refinement, beauty, and potential. He was right. Faleenah has been an exceptional producer. When David made his journey to see Fanaticaa again, it was just weeks before the Breeders World Cup show. He fell in love with her all over again, and knew he had found that jewel Sheikh Naif had so desired. We recently caught up with David Boggs just as he was returning to Scottsdale, Arizona, from the Region 1 Championship show in Delmar, California, where he presented Fanaticaa to a Unanimous Gold Champion Mare title. Fanaticaa was once again awarded the highest scores for type and head with several scores of 20 from the judges. David shared the plans for Fanaticaa’s future with Sheikh Naif, under the care and guidance of Midwest Training Centre. Her win at Region 1 qualifies Fanaticaa for the 2017 U.S. Nationals. Perhaps in the future, she will make her European and Middle East debut and show at the top venues, such as Aachen and Paris. Like all great breeders, Sheikh Naif has a vision for the future of his Arabian stud and breeding program. The show ring is only one part of his vision, creating a world class breeding program is Sheikh Naif ’s long term goal. Fanaticaa will play a major role in advancing his program. Fanaticaa will be bred to some of the top sires of the world such as Magnum Psyche, QR Marc, and El Rasheem. She will also be bred to elite straight Egyptian stallions to maintain those important bloodlines. Sheikh Naif has recently hired Dr. Ayman Taher as the manager of Al Owaidah Arabian Stud. He entrusts his cherished Arabians to Dr Taher’s expert care because he believes Dr. Taher is the right man for the position. Dr. Taher is a unique young man with a lot of

experience and who has a global outlook that will bring the stud to the attention of the Arabian horse community as a leader. He will also be a key person in bringing the world-class mare Fanaticaa to the show rings of the world. Priceless jewels and sparkling gems have been desired throughout the history of the world. From ancient times, the pearl has been the jewel that symbolizes feminine purity, beauty, and grace. It is the most royal of gems and the gem favored by royalty. Fanaticaa is the epitome of beauty and grace, and she is now the pearl of Al Owaidah Arabian Stud. ■
