ABROAD WINTER 2018 As the final weeks of autumn bring the 2018 championship season to a close, the attention of the international Arabian horse community turns to Paris and the World Championships. I find that every year my own level of anticipation rises due to the relationships I’ve forged or strengthened with so many of you through AHT Abroad. Publishing this magazine has given me an incredible opportunity to expand the scope of Arabian Horse Times among Arabian horse breeders and enthusiasts on a global level, which in turn has gifted me with new and enduring friendships and business relationships.

Through this wonderful endeavor, I have also had the chance for personal growth as I have gotten to know people and cultures I wouldn’t otherwise have encountered. I’ve seen our differences in a new light and can more easily appreciate how many similarities we have. Whether breeding, showing, or simple horse-ownership, it takes all of us to promote and protect the Arabian horse for future generations. Adherence to registry requirements, scrutiny to provide fair and honest judging on every continent and expanded youth and amateur programs worldwide are just a few of our common causes. Of course, our most potent bond is always our abiding, mutual love for the Arabian horse. I am grateful for the unwavering support that Abroad has received from all of you over the past year and look forward to the future. When the spotlight shines in Paris, it will be on horses with bloodlines representing farms from Africa to Australia, from Europe to South America, from North America to the Middle East. May you all have the show you’ve been dreaming of; for many, it will be the culmination of a lifelong dream. I wish you all the best of luck and look forward to celebrating your victories in the next issue of AHT Abroad!

2019 WA O C A W RLD O DOW by Theresa Cardamone

T

he Arabian horse communities of Australia and New Zealand have joined together to host the 2019 World Arabian Horse Organization (WAHO) Conference. This international event will bring delegates from many countries together for the betterment of the Arabian breed globally. Billed as a visit to “A World of Wonder Down Under,” the organizers have increased the scope of the event to include a wonderful menu of pre-and-post-conference activities scheduled from February 1st all the way through the 17th. The official WAHO conference will occur in Terrigal, New South Wales, Australia from February 4th through 8th next year. Farm tours, exhibitions and a national championship show will bookend the meeting to create a comprehensive agenda jam-packed with fun. Scott Benjamin—Vice-Chairperson of the Arabian Horse Society of Australia (AHSA) and one of the event co-organizers—is thrilled at the opportunity for delegates from around the world to see the depth of the Australian Arabian breeding industry. “Our goal is to create a greater sense of community in the world we share as Arabian horse enthusiasts,” says Scott. “We realize it is a huge effort for people to come to the absolute opposite end of the planet. We hope some will stay for the extended period of time to enjoy the farm tours and other events.” The pre-conference junkets take place in and around Sydney on Australia’s beautiful Central Coast. They already include tours of two of the most famous Arabian studs in the world, Simeon and Mulawa, and visits to a wildlife park and other destinations. Guests will also attend the East Coast Championship Show, which is on a par—in the Australian context—with Scottsdale in terms of importance. The breeders in this area of the world take great pride not only in their purebred Arabians, they are equally enthusiastic about their eight distinct registries of Arabian derivative breeds. To that end, Australia has partnered with New Zealand to create a unique showcase for Aussie and New Zealand Arabian breeding which will take place on the showgrounds. “We are planning a two-hour presentation of our ‘Australian Ambassadors’ for our international guests in conjunction with the East Coast show,” Scott explains. “The presentation will precede a VIP dinner just prior to the Finals and will be a celebration of the Arabian blood in those breeds. Twenty to 30 individual Ambassadors will be on parade, so it will be a very true cross-section of the Arabian industry in Australia. A HT Abroad

| 62 | Winter 2018

We are very proud of them all: the purebred Arabians, Anglo-Arabians (Arabian/Thoroughbred cross), Half-Arabians, Part-bred Arabians, Arabian-Warmbloods, Arabian-Ponies, ArabianRiding-Ponies, Quarabs (Arabian/Quarter Horse cross), Arabian Stock horses, and Arabian Performance Index registered horses. Pleasure, racing, endurance, stock; we have lots of uses for our horses.” While the Arabian horse developed over thousands of years in the deserts and mountains of the Arabian Peninsula and surrounding lands, Australia and New Zealand did not know the sound of a hoofbeat until the first European horses were shipped to the Australian continent in 1788. A mere 230 years later, equine-related industries down under are flourishing. “Now, the Arabian horse thrives through our purebred and derivative registries,” Scott avers. “Australia is also the #2 breeder of Thoroughbred horses in the world and #3 in terms of prize money available for Thoroughbred racing. Horse breeding is a thriving industry.” The post-conference lineup of events will offer people a choice of spending a couple of days in either Brisbane, Queensland or Melbourne, Victoria, touring breeding farms and enjoying what the regions have to offer. The group will reunite for a short flight to New Zealand, where they will attend the New Zealand National Championships. In all, 40 to 50 studs will be represented through farm tours, horse presentations and in the show ring. It will be an unforgettable experience ... and the perfect vacation for an Arabian horse lover! This will be the third time that Australia has hosted the WAHO Conference, the last time being in 2000, the same year that they hosted the Olympics. That was also the last time a WAHO conference has been held in the Southern Hemisphere. (The 2004 Conference was in Poland, with ensuing conferences all being held in the Middle Eastern regions.) It being the summer season at that time of year, visitors can expect a welcome change from the often bitter-cold North American and European winters. With the global Arabian calendar as extensive as it is, it is unavoidable that there will be some conflict with other important events. However, with nearly three weeks of activities planned, it is entirely possible for people to attend the official Conference itself and one or more of the other events. For example, the Scottsdale show is scheduled for February 14-24, while the Conference runs from February 1-17. Delegates who have commitments in both places can come early and still get to Arizona in time to fulfill their duties there. Scott Benjamin sees the 2019 WAHO Conference as an opportunity to strengthen the bond that the Arabian horse has forged between people, worldwide. In the present political climate, it is ever more important to relate to each other in meaningful ways. “We hope that people will appreciate our hospitality,” Scott acknowledges. “We are trying to bring the world closer together through the Arabian horse. We know that what holds us together is much more important than our differences.” n

L e Soleil Stud ZT

and Magnofantasy

Words by Elvis Giughera and photos by Le Soleil Stud Archive, Gigi Grasso, Elvis Giughera.

I fell in love with ZT Magnofantasy the very first time I saw him 4 years ago at Alfabia Stud. Back then, he was young, but already very impressive; a tall and perfect body, a long arched neck, and of course, an amazing dishy head. After that visit to Alfabia Stud, I decided to breed him to one of my mares and got an outstanding filly called NIZWA LE SOLEIL. After this filly, I decided to go further with ZT Magnofantasy. This time the cross was with my WH Justice daughter. The union gave me a beautiful grey colt called Osmanthus Le Soleil, now owned by my dear friend Miloslava Khamis, Bebo Stud. I was so thrilled about them both, that I jumped further! I bred my best four mares to ZT Magnofantasy and the results are truly impressive! Four beautiful fillies, one better than the other! ZT Magnofantasy has been a very influential horse for Le Soleil, as he not only transmits beauty, but also attitude. From the beginning, I’ve been able to see these characteristics in his progeny, and now it is truly a pleasure for the eye to look at them showing off in the pastures. In September I attended the All Nations Cup in Aachen, where I saw ZT Magnofantasy again after 4 years, and I can say that he is now an even more impressive stallion; his body is like a sculpture ... long arched neck, a very pretty and dishy head and what charisma. I will never regret having introduced him into my breeding program. Having turned 3 years old this year, Nizwa Le Soleil (ZT Magnofantasy x Halimashah Le Soleil), needed a good stallion for her first baby, and who could be better than Marwan Al Shaqab? We can’t wait to see what surprise awaits us next year! A HT Abroad

sprawls across the Nevada desert like an overturned jewel box, the neon lights of its hotels and casinos sparkling and glistening, day and night. It is a place of excitement, hope and dreams, and it is the setting for the fourth IntArah The 2019 edition of the innovative sale organized by the Dream Embryo Auction. IntArah Group will take place the evening of Saturday, April 13th in conjunction with the Arabian Breeders World Cup. The Group is a cross-section of successful breeders and equine professionals who are keenly aware that only a small percentage of Arabian enthusiasts have the opportunity to buy breeding rights to the world’s most elite stallions or embryos produced by the most famous mares. They developed the Dream Embryo Auction to provide more breeders an opportunity to improve their programs at a price they can better afford. Of course, there is risk in buying an unborn foal, but it can be much more affordable than waiting until Photos by Avalon, Trace & Lisa Moffatt, and Lisa Abraham

the foal is already born, its quality revealed. It is still a gamble, but then the setting is Vegas! Considering that the auction has drawn some of the world’s finest individuals in each of its first three renditions, the 2019 sale catalog is eagerly awaited. Travis Rice, a promoter of the event, says the final lineup will not disappoint. “We have promises and commitments to consign some amazing horses,” he relates. “Our goal is to bring at least one more major surprise into the mix, and we are still being approached by breeders who want to be considered a part of history by having their stallions or mares included. We look forward to the reactions when the final list is revealed.”

The most recent Dream Embryo Auction in 2017 resulted in 25 powerhouse lots selling to 17 different buyers for an average price of $79,300; that’s a total of $1,982,500, the highest total of the three Dream Embryo Auctions held to date. The high selling lot was the unborn foal of exotic Silver World Champion Stallion FA El Rasheem crossed with 2012 Brazilian National Champion and 2013 United States National Champion Mare, Honey’s Delight RB. Honey’s Delight was already the dam of Brazilian National Champion Junior Filly Esperanzza Al Ventur to the cover of FA El Rasheem’s sire, U.S., Canadian, and six-time Brazilian National Champion Stallion, FA El Shawan. Consigned by Aria Prestige Holdings LLC of Scottsdale, AZ, the winning bid of $210,000 was made by Aljassimya Farm. Second-leading buyer was Royal Arabians of Scottsdale, AZ, who also purchased four embryos, paying a total of $285,000. Among them are the full siblings to two of the most prominent contemporary Arabian stallions in the world, World Champion Excalibur EA (Shanghai EA x Essence of Marwan EA) and World and U.S. National Champion Marajj (Marwan Al Shaqab x RGA Kouress). The nearly $80,000 average paid in 2017 begins to make a lot of sense when successes from prior Dream Embryo Auctions are taken into consideration. For example, in the very first Dream Embryo auction in 2011, Jaime Pinheiro spent $102,857 to bring home Lot #35, the unborn foal of Marwan Al Shaqab and HB Bessolea. The same combination had already produced 2014 double-U.S. National Champion Stallion, Baahir Al Marwan, making it a reasonable risk. It was a risk that paid off—and then some. The resulting filly grew up to become the 2016 Brazilian National Champion Junior Mare, Baviera HVP. The “secret” was out and Pinheiro was deluged with offers to purchase the filly.

Fast forward to this year, 2018, when Baviera HVP set the Arabian horse world abuzz once again, this time in Arizona, USA, where she earned the title of Scottsdale Reserve Champion Mare for her new owners, Aria Prestige Holdings LLC. More recently in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Baviera proved that her appeal was universal when she was unanimously crowned the 2018 United States National Champion Mare. Having won national championships on two continents in separate hemispheres, Baviera is halfway to capturing the world. The success story of Baviera HVP is just one potent example of the reality of a dream fulfilled and a reminder of the very real potential that the Dream Embryo Auction offers to each registered bidder who enjoys a seat at the table. The possibility of a huge return on a relatively small initial investment was realized with Alma HVP, a $97,142 purchase as a Dream Embryo in 2011, who resold in the 2018 Scottsdale Marquise Invitational auction for $450,000. The full sister to the late FA El Shawan, a legend in Brazil, Alma is now owned and shown by Royal Arabians of Scottsdale, AZ. At the 2015 Dream Embryo auction, $65,000 was paid for an embryo of U.S. National Champion Yearling and Futurity Filly, RD Marciena, the dam of 2018 Unanimous U.S. National Champion Baviera HVP., pictured above and right with Jaime Pinheiro and Rodolfo Guzzo.

2018 U.S. National Reserve Champion Junior Mare RD Marciea Bey, who was also the 2016 U.S. and Canadian National Reserve Champion Futurity Filly. Named Miracle RA and sired by Hariry Al Shaqab, the filly fetched an impressive purchase offer of $250,000, which the new owners turned down.

heers accompanied the rounds of trot and the enthusiasm of the audience was obvious. The championships quickly brought an exuberant mood. Simply, the best horses compete at the All Nations Cup Festival in Aachen and the geldings were no exception.

The Festival is a time to come together because of the horses and to celebrate good times. It is a party for Arabian horse breeders and enthusiasts from around the world, enjoying the Arabian Futurity Europe Cup, the German Nationals, the Breeders Trust Auction and, of course, the All Nations Cup. We are used to celebrating the international fourlegged high-society of mares and stallions in the old imperial town of Aachen at the end of September. “Simply The Best” was sung by Aachen’s well-known singer Jupp Ebert in Joe-Cocker-style, supported by a lovely children’s choir, as a prelude to the championships. It couldn’t have been more appropriate. On championship Sunday, an impressive lineup of magnificent geldings was a pleasure to witness. For Monica van Duyvebode from the Netherlands, it was a dream come true. Usually, Monica garners golden ribbons in western competitions with Erogant. In All Nations Cup and Breeders Cup winner United Arab Emirates. Aachen, the lovely WH Justice son (out of Raville) wowed the judges and spectators alongside handler Tom Oben, who led the grey gelding to Gold. “I am in heaven. Erogant is my big friend and all-round homebred boy,” says Monica. “Tom worked with him for six weeks and they did an amazing job. It was moving to hear the national anthem of the Netherlands in this setting.” Silver went to Aja Alisandro, by EKS Alihandro, owned by Barbera Napier and Alf Hallworth, UK. Emmie Graafland, Belgium led her bay Marhaabah son Eromanov T to Bronze Champion. Thanks to the noble sponsorship of Albidayer Stud, all gelding champions received generous prize money. All senior mare classes where won by Polish bred beauties and the championship was a spectacular line-up. In the end, a pearl from Qatar was one step ahead. The Marwan Al Shaqab daughter, Rihab Al Nasser, is bred and owned by Al Nasser Stud; a precious moment for the team, as Al Nasser won this title for a second year in a row. Last year’s winner was Anood Al Nasser. Both mares are from the great Dyn Aliah family. Michalów mares earned Silver and Bronze with Pustynia Kahila (by Kahil Al Shaqab) and Galerida (by Shanghai EA).

HH Sheikh Ammar Bin Humaid Al-Nuaimi and his Ajman Stud team.

Sheikh Nawaf Bin Nasser Al Thani with his homebred mare Rihab Al Nasser and handler Glenn Schoukens.

Three is a magic number in the ancient mystic trinity, representing the past, present and future, just like a good breeding program. Three became a magic number for HH Sheikh Ammar Bin Humaid Al-Nuaimi and his Ajman Stud team. Not only did their latest addition, Admiraal (Emerald J x Haniyyah), bred by Al Muawd Stud, accomplish Gold Champion Yearling Colt alongside Rod Jones (who was also honored as Trainer of the Year), the stud earned two more Gold championships with homebred creations. The elegantly dancing AJ Samara (AJ Mardan x Sama AM) garnered the title of Gold Yearling Filly, while her powerful trotting AJ Kafu (Shanghai EA x AJ Kahayla) received Gold Champion Junior Colt. “When Ajman Stud purchased Kwestura at the Pride of Poland auction, she was carrying AJ Kafu’s dam,” says Elisa Grassi, and remembers, “As Marek Trela once told me, ‘We have to treasure the daughters of mares like Pianissima and Kwestura; that is the generation that will give you the best results.’ For sure he was right!” A HT Abroad

For the young and ambitious brothers, Abdulwahab and Khalid Alsayed of Al Sayed Stud, it was great to see their yearling colt Maher Al Sayed following in the footsteps of his famous sire Alexxanderr. The colt, representing the second generation of Al Sayed Stud, won Silver in a strong competition, bested only by the aforementioned Admiraal, with D Bareq receiving Bronze. D Bareq’s title was not the only precious metal accomplished by Dubai Arabian Stud bred horses, all sired by FA El Rasheem. The full siblings D Shihanah and D Shallal (out of D Shahla) earned Bronze Champion Yearling Filly and Junior Colt. The Ladi Veronika son D Seraj added Silver Champion Junior Colt to the list of awards.

Padrons Psyche was honored with the lifetime award.

Best European private-bred and owned horse was Equiborn KA (QR Marc x Espadrilla). This glistening white stallion performed excellently and won the class for 4-6 Year Old Stallions against E.S. Sarab, but was not taken into consideration in the championship. The Lifetime Achievement Award was a memorable moment. Given to Swiss zoologist Ursula Rahm, an Honorary Member of ECAHO, she helped lay their foundation, worked in the Executive Committee and Commissions, and was for many years the Treasurer, besides acting as a DC at many shows around the world, i.e. the 2000 World Arabian Horse Championship in Paris. Under the warm September sun, ZT Magnofantasy, an Argentine aristocrat, was presented during the lunch break to an enthusiastic public. Representing a rich blend of Magnum Psyche, Shaikh Al Badi, and El Shaklan, he is also a maternal grandson of ZT Shakfantasy, a former ANC Gold Champion. Now 11 years old, he is owned by Samjad Stud of Lebanon. Ursula Rahm receiving the Lifetime Achievement award.

The dressage and show jumping competition is also part of the All Nations Cup. “We welcomed more than 100 horses of all Arabian breeds with more than 300 opportunities to compete, from beginners to the higher levels,” says Yvonne Habermann, administrator of the riding events. “These became a meeting point for international riders where older friendships come to connect and new ones can be found.” In the dressage competitions, it was striking to see horses of neighboring countries strongly represented in the sections for purebreds and Shagya Arabians, whereas in the sections for partbreds and Anglo-Arabians, almost only starters from Germany competed.

The prestigious “Paltra Pokal” and the “Ilse-Kohueshölter-Gedächtnis-Pokals” in dressage were both accomplished by Kyle van der Heijden with BA Aram (Amalfi x Aroussa Monpelou). “I just loved riding BA Aram in the special atmosphere of the Deutsche Bank stadium,” says Kyle, and proudly adds, “Many spectators and other riders came to me and said my horse and I did a good job. Wow, that’s a wonderful compliment!” The riding competitions saw some new faces, too. Caution, this paragraph contains a cliché! Sitting on horseback before the girl could run, would she learn a musical instrument or pursue another hobby? Under no circumstance! Why should she decide for something else while the most beautiful horses are in papa’s stable?! Virginia Spönle was always laser focused on horses and riding only. This summer, together with her mother Elisa Grassi, she visited the world famous CHIO in Aachen. Virginia admired her great role model Isabell Werth, a six-time Olympic Gold winner in dressage, at the Deutsche Bank Stadium, could not wait until September, as her own nomination for the ANC riding competition had already been decided.

Virginia Spoenle with Coer Noble.

At the age of ten, Virginia is almost an old hand in dressage. This year, with the pony stallion Coer Noble at the Bundeschampionat in Warendorf, she narrowly missed a podium finish and was the darling of the audience. At the ANC, Virginia started on her riding pony mare Adrette D, whose sire is out of the purebred Arabian mare Reja’s Sajka. The pair won the dressage class A* and finished fourth in dressage class L*, snaffle bridle. Also new to the dressage arena was the 4-year-old Arabian R’Adjah De Cartherey, bred and owned by French Chantal Rigat. Eefje Appelmans presented the QR Marc son, who had collected various championships in the show ring before. In Aachen, the young stallion competed for the first time under the dressage saddle. For a placement it was not enough, yet. Nevertheless, Chantal Rigat was delighted with the chic team of R’Adjah De Cartherey and Eefje Appelmans and enjoyed admiring her stallion in another ring. For all, it was simply the best.

Egyptian Event Europe F

“That Certain Feeling of Tension”

by Susanne BÖsche

or a moment, the tension in the audience and of the handlers presenting the two straight Egyptian mares was almost tangible. Scored with equal points in the 4-6 Year Old Mares class, judge Renata Schibler from Switzerland gets up close to the silver shimmering mares. With whom will she award the victory?

It was unquestionably, a highlight of the Egyptian Event Europe (EEE), organized by Heike Hain on behalf of the Pyramid Society Europe, and for the third time held against the backdrop of Dyck Castle. “The quality, especially of the senior mares, was excellent,” enthuses Schibler. In the case of tie-breaker, a judge is drawn to decide the final placement. “I did not make that easy for me. First, I looked at the horses in the big picture, then I stepped closer to them to try to feel a certain tension between the horse and me,” explains Mrs. Schibler, always in search of that certain something. In this case, the victory went to Deem Alrashediah (Ansata Nile Echo x Farid Nile Dream), and the Nader Al Jamal daughter Labibah AA, on lease to Al Thumama Stud of Qatar, had to settle for second place. “It was a very difficult decision, but sometimes you experience this as a judge, one horse may be tired already and in that second, the other horse is more convincing. In this case, both mares were fantastic. On another day, the order could have been the other way round,” says Schibler. In the Senior Mares championship, Deem Alrashediah and Labibah AA won Silver and Bronze respectively. Gold went to Noor Al Rayyan, an Ashhal Al Rayyan daughter of Ansata Nefer Isis, owned by Sheikh Mishaal Al Thani, Qatar. This noble 8-year-old also received the highest mark of the entire show.

Side note: All champion winners trace back to the famous Sabah, through Ansata Bint Bukra, Ansata Nile Mist, and Imperial Kalatifa. This was the dominant mare line within all championship winners. Zain Al Dean (Laheeb x Jowhara Al Okab) of the Israeli Talaat Feysal Abu Dahash, accomplished the highest points of all stallions and received Silver in the Senior Stallion championship. Gold went to Bebars Al Farida, Al Farida Stud, Egypt. The Imperial Baarez son is a maternal grandson of the mare Fay Zina T (Fay Sabun x Zakeyat), bred in Germany by Elke and Peter Trost. With the Pyramid Society Europe honoring Egyptian heritage on German soil at this year‘s EEE, this was exciting to see. A lecture on “The Influence of Straight Egyptians in Germany” was held by the author.

Judges Team: Ms. Martine Van Hee, Mr. Christian Moschini, Ms. Renata Schibler and Mr. Nashaat Hegazi.

In addition, a German National Championship for Straight Egyptians was offered. What was meant to attract small German breeders, however, was not well received. The number of entries–12 horses–lagged behind expectations. Nonetheless, a junior and senior championship for stallions and mares was held, with € 2,000 prize money per championship. Additionally, this caused consternation among foreign breeders, who could not understand why there were special classes for Germans. In a nutshell, an Italian breeder voiced what many were thinking, “Next year, if the Italians demand something comparable, then what? Every country gets its own championship? Come on, this is the Egyptian Event Europe. ” It is a fact, that European breeders are restrained in competing against the excellent bred, prepared and professionally handled horses of the Middle East. It is a well-known phenomenon in the European show scene. The challenge for show organizers and the ECAHO never gets any easier for implementing a system that is acceptable and supportable for smaller breeders and owners in Europe. German breeder Waltraut Hobein, though, is an exception. “I know that my horses cannot win against the horses from the Middle East, but I am proud of them and would like to present them in this setting.” Her stallion, Amun Al Aqaba, earned third in his class, but was the only stallion to receive a 20 for movement. This all stemmed from the fact, too, of the ECAHO’s decision to approve three events on the same weekend, including another Egyptian show in Bergamo, Italy (where eleven horses competed). Also, the U.S. Pyramid Society postponed the date of their Egyptian Event this year to land on the same weekend as the EEE. After having sought ECAHO‘s recognition of the EEE, which promised more prestige and benefits years ago, the Pyramid Society Europe’s show organizers were instead left with the challenge of enticing exhibitors and spectators to Europe, causing them to reconsider existing concepts. In spite of the unfortunate circumstances, many visitors to the EEE, including families from the region who became aware of the event thanks to articles in the newspaper, were unaware. They watched the show and strolled through the stable tents and well-kept park, admiring the fine, elegant horses; and more than a few may have also felt the “tension” at the sight of noble straight Egyptians. n

Excitement, Romance, Precious Stones

by Susanne BÖsche

amous American jeweler Harry Winston when talking about the diamond business, once said, “It has everything! People! Drama! Romance! Precious stones! Speculation! Excitement! What more could you want?” The exact same could be said about the 6th edition of the Straight Egyptian World Championship (SEWC), which took place in Vermezzo, just outside Milan in mid-October. And their similarity cannot be overlooked, especially as the SEWC experienced a premiere in 2018. “I am proud of the involvement of Harry Winston in this edition,” says Barbara Morali, president and organizer of the championship. “Few jewelry houses can boast such an illustrious history as that of this historic brand. With his creations, Harry Winston has adorned the greatest legends of Hollywood for as long as eight decades, and as many international heads of state. I am honored that Harry Winston has chosen to support this event, which sees the participation of the finest horses in the world. A union of unparalleled elegance.”

Just like an ethereal diamond, a good straight Egyptian horse is a possession to be prized for generations, and Nayla Hayek of Hanaya Arabians enjoyed an amazing weekend in sunny Vermezzo, combining work with her passion. Being the CEO of Harry Winston, Inc. and chairman of the Swatch Group, it only made sense for Nayla Hayek to combine the specialness and her keen passion for both when supporting the SEWC, not only with her outstanding horses, but with the sponsorship of Harry Winston, Inc. Numerous personalities from all over the world relished in memorable entertainment designed to provide a magical experience. Straight Egyptian World Championship the horses. Also wowed, were the judges in the show ring, by Hanaya’s horses. The Kenz Al Baydaa daughter, Hanaya Amirah, garnered Gold Champion Junior Filly, tracing back through her dam Ameerat Al Hejra to El Ameera – Zafaarana, while Nadeed Al Naif (Ebtiyaj Al Naif x Arqah Al Naif ) competed successfully among the senior stallions. The 7-year-old stallion received Silver with the multi-champions Bebars El Farida and Zain Al Dean winning Gold and Bronze respectively. The most thrilling championship probably was that of the senior mares. Elegant and powerful trotting at the same time, is the Laheeb daughter Wadad Zamani, a mare tracing back to famous Rodania through Om El Saad. Wadad Zamani is the best example that straight Egyptians can compete internationally on the highest level in Aachen, Menton or Paris. In Vermezzo, Wadad Zamani was awarded an amazing 94,60 points, the highest score of the show. In the championship, Wadad Zamani was bested only by another glistening white beauty, Noor Al Rayyan, proudly owned by Sheikh Mishaal Al Thani. Sired by Ashhal Al Rayyan and out of the exceptional Ansata Nefer Isis, she was already Gold Champion Senior Mare and Best in Show Female at the Egyptian Event Europe earlier this year. Laheeb’s influence could also be seen in Bronze winning Questurat Al Fawaz, a stablemate of Wadad Zamani. Questurat Al Fawaz’s sire, Al Raheeb AA, is a son of Laheeb and out of broodmare supreme The Vision HG who passed away in August. Al Jood Stud celebrated with their inspiring, young Bronze Champion Junior Filly FH Sharuby Rose. Sired by grey Shaheen Al Waab, FH Sharuby Rose herself is a bay like so many of her well-known ancestors. Like one could expect from her name, this filly is a paternal granddaughter of champion-winning Sharuby HP out of the great Shahneekha. On the female side of her pedigree, FH Sharuby Rose combines the blood of The Minstril with legendary Hanan. Stud manager Ziggy Wellens happily accepted the trophy for the Bronze title and is full of praise about the SEWC, “It is all about the straight Egyptian Arabian horse. Barbara Morali did an amazing job organizing this show—more and higher quality horses, more people, more of everything!” The Unanimous Gold Champion Junior Colt is no newcomer to the show ring. Quite the contrary, D Ra’ouf (Royal Colours x DA Aniqah) won Gold at the All Nations Cup Straight Egyptian in Kuwait in February. Bred by Dubai Arabian Horse Stud, the bold colt is proudly owned by Al Babtain Stud. Bronze was won by Dhahab Al Rayyan, a precious son of Al Adeed Al Shaqab and out of Aidah Al Nasser, bred and owned by Al Rayyan Farm. It was Florio Sabato who happily accepted the Silver award for his fine colt FA Nile Sudan (Safeer By Sibilla x Sabyah Al Thawi) from the famous Ansata Nile family. Another unanimous decision was made in the yearling filly championship. The PSE Al Rakhan daughter, N Aasia, out of Loura Naud, accomplished Gold for her excited breeder and owner, Yousef Abdulaziz Al Nudhemshi. The Silver winning and Abhaa Arabian Stud owned AB Muhra (out of Hamra Music Meno) is a spitting image of her sire Royal Colours (bred by Gabriele Weixelbaum). Another precious stone is Bronze winner Al Jawhara Aldanat, sired by Ezz Al Danat, bred by Al Danat Stud and owned by Ayad Abdulmohsen Al Thuwaini. Without question, the 2018 SEWC had it all—a bit of romance, a bit of drama, lots of excitement, and most important, precious four-legged diamonds.. n A HT Abroad

European Championships The Smile Says It All

ruges, Brussels and Antwerp … these much-visited cities are only the tip of the iceberg. Visit-worthy destinations in Belgium shouldn’t be limited to these well-known cities. The rest of the iceberg, are Belgian cities consisting of quaint stone towns hidden deep in the valleys of the Ardennes or medieval cities featuring world-class museums and/or UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The off-the-beaten-track city of Lier falls into that last category, though quite famed among Arabian horse lovers, as the Azelhof opened its doors again in October for the 2018 European Championships, run by Christine Jamar and her fabulous team. A HT Abroad

| 114 | Winter 2018

There were many reasons to smile among competitors and judges alike. “Just back from the European Championship, it was one of the best shows I have ever judged,” comments Christian Moschini, Italy. “Not only for the amazing quality of the horses—that has surely improved from two years ago in the same venue—but the hospitality of Mrs. Jamar was amazing, helped by a staff of long-time friends supporting each other. A really good time was spent with my fellow judges both in the ring and out. We left with nice memories and all of us are eager to be invited again.” Though his name relates to the celebrated Spanish painter, Picasso di Mar was born in sunny Italy. The chestnut Cavalli son out of mainly Russian-bred SG Wendetta gave his breeder and owner, Tre Stelle Stud, a good reason to smile when winning European Gold Champion Junior Colt. He is a good example of wise breeding over generations, promotion and investing in an excellent young horse who is still paying off for smaller European breeders. To be precise, the Silver and Bronze winners, H Pacino and Emperor K.A., are also owned and bred by Europeans. This also applies to Cornelia Kolnberger, running a small breeding program with three to four foals per year in Austria, proving that it is possible to compete on the highest level. DA Ariyana, the younger full sister to 2017 European Gold Champion Junior Filly DA Alihandra (EKS Alihandro x DA Miss Justice), brought home Silver, with the magnificent Eralda (Emerald J x Enezja), earning Gold for breeder Falborek Arabians and owner Al Shiraa Stables, UAE. Swedish Ole Larsen had every reason for a big smile as he bred and owns the wonderful Silver Champion Yearling Filly Alexandria NWA (FA El Rasheem x Magnolia NWA). The bay filly was bested only by the AJ Mardan daughter AJ Samara who accomplished Gold for Ajman Stud, UAE, just as she did at the All Nations Cup four weeks earlier. Another “repeat offender” was Admiraal, reigning Unanimous ANC Gold Champion Yearling Colt. The Emerald J son garnered the European title alongside Rod Jones, unanimously. Knocke Arabians celebrated another Bronze champion with Poseidon K.A., a double QR Marc grandson. But it was another Knocke bred stallion, Profender K.A., a QR Marc son out of lovely Palanga and owned by Florentina Arabians who received the award for the Best Belgium Bred Horse; thanks to his handler Juan Murillo. Man and stallion delivered a great show. The strong and competitive Senior Mare classes brought a smile to everybody’s face, including Michalów-bred and owned Wildona, who wowed all who witnessed her. The judges honored the mare with four 20s for type, one 20 for head and neck and a full set of 20s for movement. Was this the same mare who was not taken into consideration at the All Nations Cup four weeks earlier? This white pearl gave a mind-blowing performance and deserved the high score of all mares and the Gold Champion title!” says Elisa Grassi.

A HT Abroad

| 115 | Winter 2018

With Pustynia Kahila (Kahil Al Shaqab x Pustynna Malwa), Michalów also garnered Silver Champion Senior Mare. One more example of a successful small breeder is Giancarlo Buzzi, who leased broodmare Amanda Al Tiglio to breed her to his famed stallion Ajman Moniscione. The resulting filly, chestnut Alma Al Tiglio, was enchanting from the very beginning and Mr. Buzzi held on to his outstanding filly. Alma Al Tiglio rewarded Mr. Buzzi’s faith with numerous championships she garnered as a junior in Europe, the Middle East, and the USA, including Menton and Las Vegas. She returned as a senior in 2018 and promptly garnered 2018 Italian National Champion Senior Mare before being named Bronze European Champion Mare. At this time of year, a Halloween party seemed appropriate to bring people together, with the best costumes receiving awards. Jaroslav Lacina was the lucky winner of an Emerald J breeding and the ECAHO president generously donated the service to a charity auction where it was sold for 30.000 Euro. The funds raised from the generous donation at the auction will be used to support children with cancer. Rumors spread that ECAHO re-think its entry conditions to the European Championships. With the probability of the show only open to European citizens next year, perhaps this will be an opportunity to bring European breeders back into the show ring. Especially if ECAHO decides to open the championships to horses bred anywhere, but owned by European citizens, which would ensure a large target group. Regardless, it does not detract from the overall prestige of this ever important show.

One Tragic Day … Two Great Stallions Lost

by Susanne BÖsche

Grief from tragedy can be experienced privately or expressed publicly and shared as a community. On November 4th, the Arabian horse world mourned the loss of two great straight Egyptian stallions on one tragic day: Al Adeed Al Shaqab and Al Maraam.

(1995 – 2018) Some horses capture hearts easily, and Al Adeed Al Shaqab was such a horse. A straight Egyptian stallion recently making history, he will be an everlasting legend of Al Shaqab Stud. For many Arabian horse lovers, Al Adeed Al Shaqab was one in a million. A majestic stallion himself, Al Adeed Al Shaqab was the true heir to the throne at Al Shaqab Stud when his legendary sire Ansata Halim Shah passed away too early. Through his dam Sundar Alisayyah, Al Adeed Al Shaqab also offered a line to another hero of the breed, Ruminaja Ali. Sheikh Hamad bin Ali Al Thani always had a special connection to Al Adeed Al Shaqab, “Al Adeed was the most perfect Arabian stallion for me in flesh, a living incarnation. Also, that he is one of the few sons his famed father left behind in Qatar makes him special.” With his commanding presence, energy and fluent movements, Al Adeed Al Shaqab garnered titles in the Middle East, as well as at the All Nations Cup (2002) and the World Championship (2003). More importantly, he has transmitted his Arabian archetype to many champions around the world. Al Adeed Al Shaqab daughters and sons are prized around the world, reflecting the type and elegance of their famous sire. Farhoud Al Shaqab is Al Adeed’s worthy successor at Al Shaqab Stud and there are more admirable champion progeny adorning prestigious farms around the globe. Anyone attending the UAE shows will remember the chestnut roan mare Kahielat Khalid, always showing off. Laheeb Al Nasser is a world traveler and now finds his home at Hanaya, and the young sire Naseem Al Rashediah, has excited straight Egyptian breeders, as well as garnering interest as an outcross worldwide. Al Adeed Al Shaqab’s place in history is already assured. His rich impact on the breed preserving his memory beyond the grave. A HT Abroad

(1998 – 2018) Historically, the firstborn son was always special. In royal houses, he was entitled to the throne. In horse breeding, this is not self-evident, but depends on the quality of the foal. Al Maraam, sired by Imperial Imdal and the first-born of the great broodmare The Vision HG, stepped out of the shadows of his famous parents. Now he’s left this earth forever, at only 20 years of age, two months after his dam The Vision HG. An international show champion himself, Al Maraam passed on his precious heritage in the breeding barn. “Latifah AA out of Imperial Kalatifa is one of Al Maraam’s special daughters,” says his breeder Chen Kedar of Ariela Arabians. “Latifah AA is a maternal half-sister to the famous Loubna, but she is also one of my absolute favorites. This mare was extremely typey from the moment she was born and she has a wonderful character—a typical family horse, just like her sire. Latifah AA has won several international championships and is now one of our best broodmares.” Being a world traveler, Al Maraam was selected by the Polish State stud, resulting in the elegant Palmira daughter Parmana, an accomplished show horse and a precious broodmare for Michalów. Al Maraam’s final days were spent in the care of Italian Alexandra Santorini, enjoying their loving attention.
