ABROAD SUMMER 2019 The relationship between the people of the Middle East and the Arabian horse is timeless; it stretches back to the beginnings of recorded history. And, for hundreds of years, European breeders have assumed the responsibility of preserving and improving purebred Arabian horses at private farms and state studs whose programs have stood the test of time.

In America, our history with the Arabian horse may not have the longevity of some other regions, but it has certainly had a monumental influence on the development of the breed on a global level. Beginning in the twentieth century, U.S. breeders imported the finest bloodlines that could be gathered from all over the world, creating a “melting-pot” of equines that mirrors the diversity of our human population. From this rich mixture has sprung the contemporary Arabian show horse. 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of the foundation of my family’s Cedar Ridge Arabians. My parents shared a passion for horses that they instilled in me, a passion that will last my lifetime. I’m both proud and humbled to say that in that time, we have bred 84 horses that were named National Champions and/or Reserve National Champions. In keeping with the traditions of the past, Cedar Ridge has recently reached back to Europe for a new infusion of old-time excellence. Leasing *Perfinka from Poland’s Bialka State Stud was a long-time goal for us, especially my father, Dick Ames. We are grateful for the opportunity and the trust that this lease represents. And it is with the greatest excitement that we look forward to *Perfinka competing for the U.S. national championship later this year. After her thrilling win in Las Vegas in April (2019 Arabian Breeders World Cup Gold Supreme Champion Senior Mare), we are delighted to be able to expose her to a larger American audience. *Perfinka will play a significant role in our program as Cedar Ridge Arabians embarks on its next 50 years.

Every contemporary Arabian horse enthusiast is aware of the perpetual success enjoyed by Royal Arabians and their clients at North America’s most prestigious shows, and the leadership position that Royal has risen to in the breed. While some seek to force such dynamic change, Cindy McGown and Mark Davis have taken a more organic approach while transforming Royal Arabians from a small, private farm in Arizona, into a breeding and training center of global importance. With Cindy’s longtime vision as a blueprint, Royal Arabians has evolved into one of the most complete, in-demand enterprises in the industry. Yet, in spite of enlarging their global footprint, Royal has maintained a strong feeling of family among their diverse client base. Cindy McGown takes pride in Royal’s trajectory from its relatively humble beginnings. “I am very proud of the Royal Arabians team and am hopeful that our success encourages more small breeders to follow their passion to breed good horses,” she states. “The small breeders are the true backbone of this industry. I want all to feel welcome at Royal; to share the love we breeders have for the Arabian horse.”

are treated with honesty and

Cindy McGown has a number of transformational ideas that would strengthen the business and promote the Arabian horse. “I feel we market to each other in this industry,” she comments. “We need to market to the outside public in the appropriate demographic to encourage more people to participate, both at the local level as well as the national level.” Expanding industry-wide marketing plans to better support people showing their own horse and being competitive at a very low expense are important to Cindy. “I also believe more amateur classes would improve the potential for new growth in the industry at all levels. We need marketing plans as an industry that promote the Arabian horse to a broader market and encourage new members via mentoring. The Arabian Horse Association could do much more to promote the Arabian horse and the lifestyle that comes with it outside their membership to encourage new people to try this

integrity, as I feel that the lack of honesty is one of the industry’s pitfalls. As a group we need to demand fair competition and stand up for what is right. I have heard many times about corruption in the judging. While I have personally seen great improvement in this area, if it exists, we need to take action to stop it. No one wants to participate in a sport if they feel they can’t win because it’s unfair.” Fortunately, Cindy and Mark are among those in the Arabian world who are willing to take on the problems as well as enjoy the benefits of the industry. At the same time, they are expanding their global profile by exhibiting on the European circuit and cultivating new members for the Royal “family tree.” It is an eagerly anticipated, ambitious agenda. Judy Sirbasku

OPENING THE TREASURE CHEST

WITH THERESA CARDAMONE

Judy Sirbasku is considered to be the “Matriarch of the Straight Egyptian Horse, after breeding the best straight Egyptian horses in the world for over 40 years. Many of her precious mares have heretofore been considered unattainable by the Arabian horse community. On October 11th, 12th & 13th, 2019, Judy will open the Arabians Ltd. treasure chest to reveal her finest gems. It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for serious breeders of straight Egyptian bloodlines. Judy graciously agreed to share her thoughts about her historic decision. A HT Abroad

The Treasures Sale

After so many years, why are you now ready to part with your greatest Treasures? For many years, I have been so fortunate to be intimately involved with these magnificent straight Egyptian horses. Through this experience, I have developed an intense desire for the legacy of these top bloodlines of the breed to continue on in the future. At this point in my life, I want to “wind down.” Rather than continue to help create these wonderful creatures, I want to watch a select group of people that share my values carry on this noble pursuit. In order for them to produce the very best, I have come to the realization that I must part with the finest that are now at my farm. This was not an easy decision for me.

What specific steps do interested people need to take to participate in the auction? They can go to the website: www.the-treasures-sale.com. We are constantly updating it with information about the sale. At the site, they will soon be able to register by filling out bidder paperwork to attend the auction, or to become a phone or internet bidder. What plans do you have for the future? To be semi-retired. But a big part of the future, for me, is to observe the success that other breeders will have with these top horses. I also plan to offer breedings to my stallions and boarding services at my farm, Rock Creek Arabians. ■

Can you recall a special moment with your horses you’d like to share? Acquiring Mishaal HP from Germany is a wonderful memory. We were looking for another beautiful stallion that would cross well with our Desperado daughters. It took us five years to find Mishaal HP; we found him through Frank Spönle. I sent Shawn over to Europe to look at him and take videos of him. And the minute I saw the videos I said, “That’s it. That’s what I need. That’s what I want.” Plus, I loved his pedigree. I don’t ride. I’ve never ridden a horse, I’m a carrot-feeder! But I’ve enjoyed seeing so many of the horses I have bred selling all over the world—the sons and daughters of Thee Desperado, Mishaal HP, Bellagio RCA, and of course Alixir. I’ve always thought of myself as a breeder first. Watching my program produce some of the most valuable and treasured horses that are acquired by breeding programs worldwide just confirms that we are breeding the right mare to the right stallion. How are you deciding which horses will be available to other breeders? By picking the best I have to offer. I decided you have to part with the best for others to produce the best. What are your criteria for selecting the “right” new owner when you sell horses privately? I’m always attracted to potential buyers that possess three things: a deep, genuine love for these wonderful horses, real knowledge of their history, and character. A HT Abroad

GRK FARMS by KRISTI HOPP

s

ixteen years ago, in 2003, with his children grown and starting families of their own, Gary Kehl was contemplating the idea of retirement. He purchased two Half-Arabian pintos for trail riding, but beyond that, never thought that by 2019 he would be heading a hugely successful Arabian horse breeding and showing operation. It all really began when, for “something to do,” he attended an Arabian horse auction with a friend. It didn’t take long for him to be mesmerized by the beauty and grace of the Arabian horse, and with a purchase that day, he began the journey that would include the establishment of GRK Farms, his namesake and passion. He clearly recalls the moment it all began with a smile, “I was hooked by the beauty and mystique of the Arabian breed.” With the purchase of that first purebred Arabian, Gary knew what he wanted to do, but knew that he would need help. With his mind set on what he wanted to achieve, Gary sought education, guidance and expertise from a number of top professionals in the Arabian horse community, and it was not long after that he met up with Priscilla Cluff, a young trainer with tons of talent and an incredible drive. He started acquiring horses, hired Priscilla as his trainer and farm manager, and GRK Farms established its roots in Utah.

N

ever one to take on new challenges lightly, Gary and Priscilla teamed up to breed, raise, train and go on to show one of GRK’s earliest champions, Billie The Kid GRK (Sundance Kid V x Just To Fool You (APHA)). The black mare with the unmistakable white bald face has been a formidable presence in the western pleasure arena since her junior horse years, with Priscilla and Gary’s granddaughter, Chloe. Then there is Lady Justify GRK ( Justify x Fortessa MCF) who has been extremely successful with granddaughter McKienna. Between Chloe and McKienna, Gary and his entire family have been enjoying success in the show ring on these GRK-bred and trained horses. Each have won numerous titles at Regional, Scottsdale and National levels in western and hunter pleasure. Most notably, Billie The Kid GRK and Chloe were national champions at the 2018 Youth National Show not just in the 14 & Under class, but also the much deeper Elite JTR class.

W

ell-started in his vision to create beautiful Arabian performance horses, Gary knew he also wanted to bring more attention to his passion for the beauty and presence of Arabians and wanted to begin branching out into halter breeding. Again, seeking direction and education from leading industry professionals, he was introduced to Doug Leadley, who introduced him to OFW Rhianna. Thus, the GRK Halter breeding program was born. Bred by Orrion Farms, OFW Rihanna is sired by National Champion OFW Magic Wan, and out of *Hafiti Julianna, a dam almost certainly ensuring her future as a consistent broodmare, having produced OFW Psylhouette, dam of World Champion EKS Alihandro. OFW Rhianna is a half sister to OFW Ana (by DA Valentino), who has a number of stellar accolades at title shows. Before launching her career as a broodmare, however, Gary did campaign OFW Rhianna, where she earned a number of Regional Championships before becoming U.S. National Reserve Champion in her 3-year-old year. Proving the value of his investment, OFW Rihanna has thus far produced three foals who have more than exceeded expectations. The fiery chestnut filly Everanna GRK, by Ever After NA, was sold to overseas buyers, thereby establishing an international presence for GRK. Next, she produced an exquisite black bay filly by Kanz Albidayer, Hafatianna GRK, who was retained for the rapidly expanding GRK breeding program and is expecting her first foal by EKS Alihandro. And in 2018, OFW Rhianna gave birth to a filly named Fabrihanna GRK, by RFI Farid, a sensational stallion whom Gary took notice of in 2017 after becoming the number one sire at the World Championships in 2016. Gary was, to say the very least, “excited” by Fabrihanna’s birth.

Bajadior GRK, by Baha AA

nother early addition to the GRK broodmare collection was Izzabella Dona (*Jiuliusz De Wiec x Iim So Sheik). With a unique pedigree, she has proven to be an interesting cross to many different stallion lines. *Jiuliusz De Wiec is a Monogramm grandson, with dam lines tracing back to some of Lenita Perroy’s Haras Meia Lua-best Ali Jamaal bloodlines. Iim So Sheik is a daughter of Iimagine, a Brazilian based stallion and son of Magnum Psyche. Like OFW Rihanna, Izzabella Dona carries with her several top ten wins at U.S. Nationals and beyond. One of her first foals produced for GRK was a 2017 filly, Bajadior GRK, sired by straight Egyptian stallion Baha AA, and owned by world renowned Ariela Arabians; another, a striking colt just born at GRK’s Scottsdale farm. Also coming in 2019 is the cross with young superstar sire Exxalt, 2017 U.S. National Champion Futurity Colt. He made an initial huge splash in the show world in 2015 when he was named Scottsdale International Junior Champion Colt. Priscilla has noted that she loves the trainability of Izzabella Dona’s offspring, and is looking forward to each one. A HT Abroad

ontinuing his quest to build the perfect broodmare herd, Gary took the opportunity to see a magnificent, big and bold black mare at PCF Arabians he’d heard about and was immediately sold. RD Mirella (Baywatch V x Alanna), bred by Rae-Dawn Arabians, had already produced Tesla Marc PCF, by QR Marc, who was the 2017 Scottsdale Signature Stallion Champion. Recognizing a pedigree that would enhance both his performance and halter breeding programs, Gary was enthusiastic about adding RD Mirella to his herd. Her pedigree traces back through Sundance Kid V to the legendary *Bask daughter, Balalinka, and on her dam’s side, leads to greats like Versace and JA Magnificat, just to name a few. In 2018, RD Mirella produced a nice filly by RFI Farid, and is expecting a 2019 foal by QR Marc.

nother gem discovered in Texas, in an exquisite young grey filly by S.M.A. Magic One (Psytadel x Bint Bey Shah), out of Majaarani (Thee Desperado x Majalis). Bred by Michael Byatt, Gary acquired the filly with the exquisite head and beautiful Arabian type, immediately dubbing her Exotic One GRK. She carries some royal Egyptian blood in her pedigree, including AS Sinans Pacha, Thee Desperado, Ruminaja Ali and Theegyptianprince. This young mare was bred to Exxalt and is due to foal soon via embryo transfer.

T

hen along came FH Jemina (Eminence PS x FH Jadore). Gary took notice of this charismatic and extremely “showy” filly as a yearling at the 2017 Arabian National Breeder Finals. She won her Yearling Filly class with ease, also catching Gary’s halter trainer, Lucho Guimaraes’ eye. They were able to purchase the filly, and Lucho has gone on to show FH Jemina to a stunning performance at the 2018 U.S. Nationals, leading to a well-deserved Top Ten (third) in one of the most competitive halter classes at the show. FH Jemina has been bred via embryo transfer to Exxalt, with Gary eagerly waiting to see her 2019 foal.

THE

Sire Supreme

“I fell in love with Vitorio the second I saw him. I got the opportunity to show him as a yearling and before the show, I told everyone who would listen, we were winning it! I made a deal with Don Morse and Dan Grossman who owned him in partnership at the time and bought 20 breedings to him before the Nationals. I just knew. I told them ‘I am going to win this with him, and he is going to be a breeding stallion!’ I was so on board with that horse. I had no doubt! What makes Vitorio so successful is a combination of a couple things which his father, Valentino, had. They are so gifted in the way they’re built through their neck and their shoulder, and obviously the rest of their conformation, because they’re great movers on top of it. Showing halter, for them, is so easy. So many horses have to make a big effort to lift their necks high. The Vitorios are set up for it. As a trainer, you pray to get a Vitorio because what he has makes your job so much easier. Besides the way they’re built, each and every one loves to show as Vitorio himself did. He would show so hard, with little stimulus. You’d just barely ask him, and he’d give 100 percent. It makes the trainer’s job so easy.” —STEVE HEATHCOTT

A young white stallion … a noble creature, his neck arched and prancing around caressed by admiring viewers, is a magnificent sight for every Arabian horse lover. In the mythologies of cultures around the world, white horses have a special significance: they are the horse of Kings. In Islamic culture, the Hadith tell of a white creature named Al-Buraq who brought the Prophet Mohammed to Jerusalem during the Night Journey. There is something special about the white horse.

Dubai International Arabian

by SUSANNE BÖSCHE

Horse Championship … Lucky In The Circumstances

Proving his noble character is the 3-year-old grandson of unforgettable Kwestura, AJ Kafu, whose royal pedigree includes the sire Shanghai EA and dam, AJ Kahayla. During his age class in the first round, the white colt trotted in alongside handler Frank Spönle when the halter broke. AJ Kafu took the opportunity to prance around much to the delight of the spectators but could be caught easily. Suddenly, the chain of the halter broke. Everyone in Ajman stud’s team held their breath, as ECAHO rules say if a horse is two times loose, it is disqualified.

A HT Abroad

| 177 | Summer 2019

A

And at that moment, it seemed AJ Kafu understood the particular sensitivity of the situation. Instead of running around, the colt stood quietly next to his handler with a wait-and-see attitude. With a new halter and new chain, off the two went–to win the class with an amazing 93 points and later on be

named Gold Champion Junior Colt, repeating his victory of 2018. It was a double success for Ajman Stud, whose Admiraal, by Emerald J, attained the Bronze in the same Junior Colts Championship class. In the female championships, three more Ajman Stud beauties were awarded precious metal: AJ Samara (Silver Yearling Filly), AJ Norah (Bronze Junior Filly), and AJ Sawari (Silver Senior Mare), each a gem for every breeder. They were outstanding results at one of the most prestigious shows around the globe for the team around HH Ammar bin Humaid Al Nuaimi. Another white aristocrat was unstoppable on her way to championship honors. The Ekstern daughter, Pepita, had just gained Gold in Sharjah and definitely was the mare to beat in Dubai. Alongside Glenn Schoukens, 14-year-old Pepita presented herself from her very best side, powerfully trotting around the large Dubai arena, gaining the high score of all females (93,20). The judges honored her amazing beauty with seven 20’s for Type and Head&Neck. When all the hauntingly beautiful senior mares formed a line for the championships, Pepita was invincible and achieved Gold Champion. Bred by Janow Podlaski, Pepita is used to wearing champion roses. The fleabitten was named Polish National Gold Champion Senior Mare and Best in Show in 2014. With his keen eye for sheer beauty, HH Prince Abdulmajeed bin Sultan Al Saud of Akmal Stud selected Pepita for his “treasure-house” where she accompanies other accomplished champions, like 2018 World Gold Champion Senior Mare Anood Al Nasser. Other Sharjah Champions repeated their results. Such as A Vision MI, a chestnut filly shimmering like gold, which suits her just fine. Bred by Mulawa Arabian Stud in Australia, A Vision MI (Allegiance MI x Always Valentine MI) accomplished 2018 Unanimous Australian National Gold Champion Yearling Filly and represents the twelfth generation of Mulawa Stud and traces back to Lady Anne Blunt’s mare Dajania, who was bred by famed Mohammed Pasha, Syria. Waving the flag for her new owner Albidayer Stud, A Vision MI picked up Gold Champion Junior Filly in Sharjah, and the elegant 3-year-old was clearly the front runner in Dubai, too, leaving previous champion winners like D Shihanah (Silver) and AJ Norah (Bronze) behind. Any junior filly with designs on winning at major shows this season will likely have to contend with this vision of elegance and charm, who is more than a crowd favorite. Dubai Arabian Horse Stud celebrated a double success in the Junior Colts Championship with D Mezyan and D Shakhat; the pedigree of both depicting the excellent combination of Royal Colours and Gazal Al Shaqab. A new generation of exciting young stallions are evolving under the wise management of Eng. Mohammed Al Tawheedi and Mr. Abdelaziz Al Marzooqi. Excellent horses can be found in Scandinavia too, and for sure, the Larsen family kept their fingers firmly crossed during the Yearling Filly Championship. Their FA El Rasheem daughter, Maria Magdalena NWA, bred by them and on lease to Al Hawajer Stud’s Dr. Ghanem Al Hajri, successfully attained the Gold and the high score of all yearlings (92,30)! While Silver winning AJ Samara will presumably enjoy a relaxed year on pastures, there will be a reunion with Maria Magdalena NWA and her breeder when Dr. Al Hajri decides to campaign this highly elegant bay filly in Europe. The final decision and probably the most exciting part of every show is the Senior Stallion Championship. This year’s results gave rise to discussions (see page 124). The striking grey Sundown KA, bred by Knocke Arabians and now waving the flag for Al Saqran Stud, won his class with the high score of all males (93,20), leaving the great Alexxanderr in second place. Just two weeks before, Sundown KA was awarded Unanimous Gold Champion Senior Stallion in Sharjah. Charlotte Lewenhaupt of Sweden, is the breeder of Sundown’s dam, the Egyptian bred L Serenella, by Turki Al Rayyan out of Salma and back to India, who is also the dam of World Champion Insh Allah. Sundown’s sire, QR Marc, hardly needs an introduction. After returning to the show ring, most people expected seeing the legendary QR Marc win Gold. Instead, it was the rise of his son—it was a close call—when Sundown KA was awarded Gold with 18 to 19 points, leaving Silver to QR Marc and Bronze to Alexxanderr, the reigning PSAIAHF Gold Champion Senior Stallion.

The Arabian Breeders World Cup April 11-14, 2019 ~ Las Vegas, Nevada

by Kristi Hopp

A

fter a group of United States Arabian horse breeders discussed the possibility of hosting a European-style show in the States while at the All Nations Cup horse show in glorious Aachen, Germany, the idea became a reality in 2007, and the Arabian Breeders World Cup (ABWC), in its 12th year in exciting Las Vegas, Nevada, was another smash hit! Scott Bailey, Public Relations Director, was thrilled with the resounding success of this year’s show, noting, “It was essential to bring fun and excitement to this world-class horse show, and we succeeded. The quality was exceptional.” Bailey was also quick to offer a special thanks to the King of Morocco for generously donating all of the magnificent awards, which he has done so graciously before, noting that the ABWC and Paris World Championships are the only shows he supports in this manner outside of Morocco.

Arabians from all corners of the world were represented and judged likewise, including world renowned Daniel Bergren, USA; Karen HomerBrown, USA; Scott Brumfield, USA; Claudia Darius, Belgium; Koenraad Detailleur, Belgium; and Annette Vickery, Australia. A four-day event, the Sunday finale is filled with ceremonies, crowd engaging Liberty classes, awards and the highly anticipated championships. A huge highlight of the opening ceremonies is the presentation of the Flags of Nations. The Nellis Air Force Base Honor Guard presented the American flag and volunteers carried flags representing each participating nation at the show. This aspiring ceremony was topped with Arabian owner and breeder Ron Armstrong singing the National Anthem.

Judges: Daniel Bergren, Karen Homer-Brown, Scott Brumfield, Claudia Darius, Koenraad Detaileur and Annette Vickery. The crowd favorite Liberty class took on a different format this year as a Liberty Plus class, judged on many different elements, including: stallions and mares judged separately, conformation displayed at the stand-up, motion in hand, at liberty, and overall crowd engagement.

This year’s Handler of Excellence award went to Andy Sellman, this being his fourth time winning this honor, and Top Breeder of the show went to Orrion Farms. Though Steve and Christina Poore acquired the legendary Orrion Farms in Washington only a few short years ago, they have quickly established a vast presence in the Arabian horse industry. “Having five of our 16 yearlings compete was exhilarating,” the Poores stated, “and sharing the success with our team was a great source of pride. We are thankful to be part of the Arabian horse industry and are excited to share the results of our breeding program with the rest of the world.” If you seek entertainment and excitement at your horse shows, the 2020 Arabian Breeders World Cup in Las Vegas is your best bet! n

Las Vegas, Nevada | April 13, 2019

I

by Kristi Hopp

n 2011, the inaugural ‘Dream Embryo’ auction was held in Brazil, in conjunction with the Brazilian Nationals. Grossing an impressive 1.9 million dollars in successful acquisitions, it was clear to founders Luciano Cury, Mario Zerlotti and Greg Knowles, that there was a place in the Arabian horse industry, once again, for a high-end auction.

In 2015 they brought the venue to Las Vegas, hosting the event alongside the immensely popular Arabian Breeders World Cup. It was a huge success, establishing that the IntArah Auction would now take place every other year in the States. Indeed, 2017 did not disappoint either. The current ownership and management of IntArah, Luciano Cury, Mario Zerlotti and Cindy McGown, predicted 2019 would also follow suit.

Enhancing the ambiance around this year’s auction was the highly anticipated addition of the IntArah jackpot class at the ABWC show, open to the unborn embryos purchased at the 2015 and 2017 auctions. McGown shares, “The IntArah Auction was the magical night it promised to be and a great success once again. The IntArah Jackpot class and the $77,777.77 in prize money was a great addition to the World Cup, and we look forward to both the class and dream embryo auction in 2021.” McGown, with husband Mark Davis, captured Jackpot championship honors with the co-owned 2017 dream embryo resultant foal, Royal Hadara, sired by RFI Farid and out of FT Havanna El Keav. Grossing an impressive $1,381,000 with an average lot price of $60,000, the 2019 auction goes on the record books as another prosperous auction for IntArah and the industry. The climatic lot of the evening and high seller went to Rae-Dawn Arabians who purchased an unborn treasure near and dear to their breeding program. For a notable $160,000, owners Murray & Shirley Popplewell, will welcome the unborn embryo from DA Valentino and beloved RD Fabreanna home to their farm. A full sibling to the sensational Donna Molta Bella SRA, success is in the future! The IntArah Group continues to be “committed to the success, marketing and promotion of the Arabian horse,” and is looking forward to your participation at the 2021 auction; guaranteed to be another magical evening.

“I am thrilled with the results of IntArah 2019. To me, this auction had the strongest group of donor mares ever. We had f ive embryos sell for over $100,000—this is extraordinary! The environment and excitement in the showroom were amazing, and the participation and support of new breeders is something that the industry really needs.” —Mario Zerlotti 2019 DREAM EMBRYO WINNING BIDDERS:

by COLLEEN SCOTT When Kris Glover was mucking the stalls of polo ponies, he had no inkling that decades later he would find himself with a farm, covered arena, a dozen plus paddocks, on-site trainers and stalls full of Arabian horses. No, even in his wildest imagination, that was not in the realm of possibilities. Fast forward and it’s exactly where Kris and his wife, Ashley, have landed. They just didn’t take a traditional route getting there. While Kris’ sister, Morgan has always been an Arabian rider and enthusiast; both Kris and Ashley came to the game later in life. “When we were first married, we were very focused on building our family and careers,” says Kris. “As we’ve had success, the chaos of our lifestyle made it difficult for us to find ways to unwind. We have three amazing kiddos who have a lot of activities, and at least one of us is dealing with a heavy travel schedule. There was never time to slow down. Even moments of peace were filled with thoughts of the next ‘to do.’” Both Kris and Ashley grew up experiencing the joy of a more rural lifestyle than what is the normal hustle and bustle of the Dallas/Fort Worth area. “For both of us, being in the country transported us back to your younger, simpler days,” says Kris. “Beautiful sunsets, starry nights, and the sounds of the country make for deep sleep and the opportunity to relax. We decided we needed our own getaway, something that was close enough to Dallas that we could spend weekends there.” After searching for several years, Kris and Ashley finally found the perfect place in Valley View, Texas, located an hour north of Dallas. The 115-acre property was perfect with its beautiful views, stocked lakes and seclusion. “Fortunately or unfortunately, it also came with three barns (totaling 40 stalls), a covered arena and 17 paddocks.”

Kris and Ashley didn’t own any horses at the time, and really didn’t intend for that to change. Enter Kris’ sister and brother-in-law, Morgan and Ryan Moore, MLM Arabians. “When we found the property, I called Morgan and Ryan and asked whether or not they would help us make use of the facilities if we bought the place. Fortunately, they said yes. They moved to the ranch, bringing with them Center Ring Show Horses, owned by Sterling and Melissa Bradley.” As it often happens in the Arabian horse industry, it didn’t take long for Kris, Ashley and their children to catch the bug. “With all of these beautiful horses around the place, it was only a matter of time,” says Kris. “Our kid started taking lessons, and Ashley and I started looking to purchase a couple of halter horses.” With Morgan and Ryan as resources, Kris and Ashley were able to immerse themselves in the industry quickly. “When we were growing up, Morgan was learning to ride while I was mucking stalls,” Kris says. “She knew so many people and was able to introduce us to a lot of amazing owners and trainers. When we went to watch shows early on, I would sit next to her and ask dozens of questions.” Besides relying on Morgan for help, Kris did his own research. “He began pouring over books, studying bloodlines,” says Morgan, “and really dedicating himself to having the kind of knowledge that would allow him to make a contribution to the breed.” In addition to immediate family, the Sahara family has also been instrumental in the shaping of their purchases and program. “Their expertise, passion, and commitment are infectious,” shares Kris. “Andy, Greg, Nancy and Jeff have been really supportive of us, and we are very grateful.” Dr. Ben and Michelle Bassichis of Stella Bella

spoke to me,” he says. Last September, he got the chance to do just that. “I took the kids down to Michael Byatt’s in Houston to look at horses. Michael made it such fun. He was gracious enough to show us many of his horses, including some not for sale. He brought out Barzan Al Shahania—that horse really spoke to us!” The visit to Michael Byatt Arabians would prove fruitful, with Kris and Ashley making their first purchase of the chestnut mare Bashayer Albidayer (S.M.A. Magic One x PA Penelope). Next the family headed to Santa Ynez to visit Om El Arab, then to Aljassimya Farm, where they acquired Marva Aljassimya (Monther Al Nasser x Jameelah Aljassimya). The next stop was Gallun Farms, where Greg and Nancy showed them

Arabians have also played a big role in the Glover’s introduction to Arabian horses. As the couple researched, planned, attended shows and studied bloodlines, they also started thinking of names for the new family adventure. “Since the horses were going to be a family thing, we wanted the name to reflect our family – something that reflects our credo of always working to make each year better than the last.” Collaborating with their three children, Kris and Ashley ultimately decided on three statements that would be the cornerstone of their vision for an Arabian breeding program. Imagine a better tomorrow, strive to make it happen, and rise in success. “We shortened that to Imagine, Strive, Rise. Ultimately, we thought ISRA Arabians flowed better than just ISR Arabians. We never thought we’d be explaining the name!” As Kris and Ashley began searching for horses, Kris kept in mind some advice he was given some time ago. “I was told to buy a horse that

some horses, including the majestic RH Triana, and they were were hooked on Arabians all over again. A month later, the Glovers received a phone call from Greg that he had a filly they needed to see. “They brought out Aria Tresor (Conquest BR x RH Triana), and she was trotting around really full of herself. She was beautiful. We bought her a couple of days before her first show at the Arabian Breeder Finals.” Additional purchases would follow, including riding horses for the children. John, 10, does reining with Al-Marah Scimitar; Autumn, 11, is riding western pleasure on RJO Jokours Are Wild; and Rivers, 13, is learning hunter pleasure on Pristyna. Two more broodmares came from Timberridge: TOA Shahqupwithme and Psyches Showcase. Prior to the 2019 Marquise Auction in Scottsdale, Kris and Ashley did

have another horse with this much success for a while, so it’s important to truly appreciate these moments.” Kris and Ashley say Tresor is a sweet filly out of the ring. “Even if she’d gotten the gate, we’d still have been really proud of her. The wins are amazing, but the long-term joy is after the shows are over … when they come home; our contentment will come from watching them get to be horses running around the field, living long and happy lives.” Besides enjoying the gift of being able to watch the horses grow in front of their eyes, Kris and Ashley are cherishing the new friendships they have developed. “What Morgan told me that I didn’t totally get at first, was that the best part of showing was having everyone under the same roof, and she was right. I spent so much time meeting people and talking about horses that I didn’t make it to the tables once!” There’s no doubt that with the solid foundation they’ve built, ISRA Arabians will do just what Kris and Ashley have set out to do … get better every year.■

Aria Tresor (Conquest BR x RH Triana) their homework. “We studied every horse in the auction and created a list of the ones we’d like to own, finally settling on our top three. The first one shot way past our price range, and my last bid for MD Athena was at the max. I remember thinking, ‘Nobody else bid, don’t bid!’ When the auctioneer declared she was ours, I think I was so shocked! I was mute for a few minutes. When we went to see her in the stalls, we realized she was even more beautiful than we initially thought.” Both MD Athena and Aria Tresor recently proved the couple’s homework is paying off. In Las Vegas, at the recent Arabian Breeders World Cup, Aria Tresor with Andy Sellman, captured the Gold Champion Junior Filly title and MD Athena was named champion in the AHBA Auction Fillies class. Athena’s win was particularly special to Kris and Ashley due to Ryan showing her. Going from owning zero horses to nine in less than a year is one thing. Having two of those nine capture such prestigious awards is another. “I think we’re still processing it,” says Kris. “I remember us discussing the possibility of one day winning a saddle—maybe in five to 10 years. That we’ve been able to get one this quickly has us giddy. I don’t think we’ll
