Jordan Cline is extremely grateful to be reintegrated in the Arabian horse community. She took a hiatus a er a long career as a youth rider, but is back showing as an adult amateur.
“It has been a highlight of my life to reignite these friendships,” Cline stated. “I picked up right where I le o with so many familiar faces. I do not take the relationships I have within this community for granted.”
Appreciating the personal part of owning Arabian horses is something Cline learns from her father DeCarol Williamson, founder of Dolorosa Arabians in Rocky Point, NC. He has always had a strong team supporting their e orts. However, these people become more like family.
“ e horses’ wellbeing is my dad’s rst priority,” Cline said with admiration. “He wakes up every morning and looks out to the pasture of babies. He loves nothing more than sharing Arabian horses with as many people as possible.”
Dolorosa Arabians has had in-house trainers in the past. Cline remembered growing up showing under the direction of Rob Bick and Caralyn Schroter fondly. She also had recent successful show seasons with Maggie Barker. Currently, Dolorosa is teaming up with trainers in the industry under their respective programs: Dale Brown, Matt Siemon and Mike Wilson.
“We have our speci c reasons for working with each trainer,” Cline said. “But in addition to their professional talents, my dad felt at peace with the Lord when making his selections. We are a family of faith and that de nitely impacts decisions we make.”
Breeding Manager, Melissa Bradshaw, was quick to compliment the program on the range of disciplines Dolorosa produces. “Our horses showcase the true diversity of Arabians,” Bradshaw says. “ e farm’s goal is to breed athletic horses who can be competitive as youngsters in the halter arena and excel as they age.”
When Dolorosa Arabians goes to a show, they are competing in just about every division. Both Cline and Bradshaw were proud of the farm’s success at the 2023 Region 12 Championships. eir horses garnered victories in the Spotlight Futurities, halter, performance, and sport horse. e team is excited to be headed to the 2023 Youth Nationals and Mid Summer Championships in July.

Cline will be competing with three Dolorosa bred horses. In addition to DA Maxing who will also be in the AWPA Maturity under the instruction of Dale Brown, Cline plans to handle both DA Xavier and DA Augustine on her own this season, with Xavier in the AHPA Hunter Pleasure AOTR Jackpot, and DA Augustine in the Arabian Hunter Pleasure AAOTR 19-49 and Choice.
But she is not the only family member who will be entering the arena in Oklahoma City. Her twin sister Savannah Hubach will show Augustine in performance halter and Cline’s daughter, Taylor, will show Xavier in performance halter and geldings in-hand.
Speaking a lot about doing this as a family, and how special that is, Cline shares that there are seven children and 16 grandchildren, many of whom have an interest in the horses. She feels especially blessed to share her passion with her own three daughters.
“I do not know how else to say it other than my heart is full,” Cline says about watching her children with the horses. “Being with the horses teaches them about the value of hard work. I love seeing them have similar experiences as I did growing up in this community.”
As Cline and her siblings introduce new generations of Dolorosa Arabian horses and humans, the family rst and foremost hopes their peers feel the appreciation they have for still being along for this ride. u

COMMENTS from the publisher
THE GIFTS THAT KEEP ON GIVING
My favorite times of the year involve youth—young horses and young people. Who doesn’t love spring foaling season? Let’s include summertime too, when we can watch those foals begin to grow up. There is no more beautiful sight than babies running in the paddock, their long, little stilt legs practically winking in the sun. It is endlessly entertaining and it is the same the world over; we all love our Arabians.
And then there are the young riders, drivers and handlers. I love this time of the year as show season marches on, when we see our junior exhibitors develop. From the beginners to the older teenagers who are highly skilled, it is encouraging to see all the work they put into their sport. I feel privileged that my work includes so many horse shows where I can watch their progress.
These months hold so much value every year for their beauty and hope. It’s especially exciting to have so many of our junior exhibitors preparing for Youth Nationals. Not everyone has to go to the national level, of course; the experience of loving horses is the most important thing, but for the ones who can be in Oklahoma City in July, it is a very special experience. For those who are competing at their last Youth Nationals, it has been a wonderful journey watching you all grow over the years, and I wish you the best of luck in your next phase in life.
It is easy to take what is familiar for granted, and certainly foals and kids are growing up all the time. I suggest that we don’t ever take them for granted, because they are a gift. They are hope and hard work and inspiration every year.
That is why we dedicate this issue to the future of our breed: our youth.

MEET THE PERSONALITIES
MIKE WEINSTEIN, PART II
Arabian Horse Times | 14 | Volume 53, No. 3
with JEFF WALLACE
AHT continues their conversation with Mike Weinstein, after learning a bit about his childhood with horses and his later purchases of Kajora and Menes. We left o with the anticipation of his trip to the Scottsdale Show in 2007 and what unfolded thereafter.
Welcome back to the interview, Mike. Your story is truly fascinating to many people in the breed including myself. So, let’s jump right in. Tell us what happened in 2007 regarding Arabian horses. In 2007 I went to Scottsdale and Je Sloan asked me to come into a stallion partnership of El Nabila B. I was interested due to the great group of people involved—Howard Kale, Frank Hennessey, Je and Princess Letitia—and the horse was a descendent of our stallion, Menes. So, I joined the partnership, and in 2010, Sandro showed El Nabila B to U.S National Champion Stallion. Later, a trip to Om El Arab changed things immensely. We fell in love with the daughters of Al Lahab, who we bred to El Nabila B and got several colts and only a couple of llies. e last foal of El Nabila crossed with Om El mares was Atticus ENB.
What is the di erence between yesterday’s halter horses and today’s halter horses?
Nothing really except maybe a little more exotic today. We had a mare, Aldara, by Probat, that could win today. And this year’s Scottsdale Champion Mare Alesia ENB could have won back then. Quality is quality. TJ’s Georgie Girl could win today; Wizja would wow today; as would the gorgeous Pesenka.
Name three breeders currently getting it right.
I’m seeing breeders now consider the future and realizing that it takes more than one generation to create a unique program of their own. People seem willing to have that patience that is required and I love seeing that. We believe in that approach ourselves and are seeing great results from having patience.

MEET THE PERSONALITIES
Do you still feel that other countries are actively seeking American bred horses for their programs? If yes, what do you think attracts them to our horses?
High quality horses have always sparked interest from the Middle East. So many of our great horses, such as the daughters of Versace, have become the foundation stock for breeding overseas; and we still do produce great horses here, but just not so many because we breed less now and breeders are holding onto their very best which is always what people want to buy. Holding onto them is great if you can, as it enables America to continue to have great horses. Unfortunately, performance judges are judging our halter horses a lot, and this creates a certain image to the rest of the world. We often don’t reward an international style of horse, so Europeans and Middle Easterners think these are our best when possibly they are not. Some American breeders such as ourselves, are making a more conscious e ort to produce a more international type. We’ve always tried to breed a pretty horse while trying to maintain an overall balance and correctness, and there was a day when the same horses could be shown in performance and halter, but those days are long gone. We almost have two separate breeds, and there are no Bask daughters left. Kajora, one of my mares at Aries Arabians could have been a champion in both disciplines, but we chose halter only with her.
What does exotic mean to you in regard to Arabian type?
I don’t really use that term in my horse vocabulary as it just sounds like a face term. Back in the 80’s, there was a Marsianin lly named Exoticaa who had a very extreme face but that was really it. Extreme type now is something very di erent to me; symmetry and balance are things of extreme type. I like looking at a horse from a distance and seeing if those two things exist and then close up for the ner points.
Mike what is your favorite color of an Arabian horse?
Flea-bitten grey.
What other bloodlines have you used in your breeding program?
Some breedings that we do are more targeted for the market, and some we do are for a retaining purpose. We have pursued adding the blood of MD Mirka to our program; breeding her to El Nabila B and Atticus
ENB. Miranda ENB is her beautiful grey daughter by *El Nabila B. She produced a very good grey lly by Mahder Al Jamal. After hearing about the beautiful chestnut colt born in Ecuador for MD Arabians by Atticus ENB out of the MD Mirka daughter, MD Alihandra, Psynergy purchased two embryos this year and has two foals coming for 2024. We have also added the blood of Om El Sultanah, a gorgeous mare at Om El Arab, by WH Justice, and we now have an Atticus ENB grey yearling lly that we are very excited about, Shakira ENB. We were particularly interested in adding the blood of the famed Bint Shaker family that has two crosses to the Mora c son, Shaker El Masri.
Name some of your favorite deceased Arabians. Pesenka, Alove-Note, Tornado, Etruria, Eskapada, Palitra.
If you could take a long airplane ight with someone you admire from our breed, who would it be?
Alexandre Ponomarev. A man who was ahead of his time. He wanted to breed beautiful athletes. He bred mares like Narada by Aswan. His vision was one of thoughtful and forward-thinking breeding.
Do you respect Aswan?
I saw him as a very old horse but yes, I did respect him and do for what he brought to the table. His dam, Yosreia, was one of the greatest mares in all of the world during her day.
What do you wish for the Arabian horse?
at American breeders could come together in unity for the Arabian horse. Lasma was our last major leader. We su er from a lack of leadership. Put the horse rst and everything else will fall into place.
Tell us about your long relationship with Sandro Pinha. How did it start?
In 2009 at the Arabian Breeders World Cup Show in Las Vegas, we brought *El Nabila to the show but ended up losing our handler. It was suggested that Sandro show him. We had never met Sandro and had some reservations about changing handlers, but after meeting him, we learned of his deep respect for Nabila. He
Arabian Horse Times | 16 | Volume 53, No. 3
ended up winning the Senior Stallion class by a large margin with very high scores but was not ready to take on the other big winners in the championship, so El Nabila B left the World Cup show for Rohara and I didn’t have much communication with Sandro after that until 2010. When the national judges were announced and we thought they were good for El Nabila B, who quali ed by winning Region 12 that May, Sandro ew down to Rohara to see him and felt that he had a chance to become the U.S. National Champion. We were excited! e horse looked amazing, and he won with a huge commanding score; he beat all of the horses that beat him at World Cup, and it was Sandro’s rst big win since leaving Midwest. We worked together more with Sandro after that as he was in Scottsdale and we were in Northern California, and he knew El Nabila B well. Now it has been 13 years that we’ve had a relationship with Sandro. He leaves us feeling supported. Some people spread their business around, but we chose to stay with him 100% of the time. He is a great guy, and he is honest. Sandro knows horses very well, he is supportive in all we do, and we have traveled the world together looking at horses. He is involved in everything we do, always in a positive way.
What is it like when Sandro has to show someone else’s horse rather than yours? How do you handle this?
Not very well. He doesn’t work for us and we don’t try to monopolize him. What’s nice for us is we are friends now, with his other clients. e more Sandro wins, the better it is for all the clients.
What are your experiences with Sandro’s entire team?
Gil and Sally are wonderful additions to Sandro’s team, and Gil is always a great time. He is now running a new real estate business, so he is not around all the time anymore, but Sally is 100% there, making things happen and getting things done always with a smile. We appreciate them both very much.

CLOSING OUT A CHAPTER TO BEGIN A NEW ONE by COLLEEN SCOTT
Peyton Bergstad is one busy 18-year-old. In addition to being a full-time student at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill, CA, studying business, farm chores, starting young horses and helping manage Sherman Ranch ll the rest of her day. But her solid upbringing and organizational skills allow her to take it all in stride. “I spend from about 7 a.m. to noon studying and doing schoolwork, then usually ride and do chores in the a ernoon. In the evening, I study some more,” she says.
e granddaughter of Marty Sherman, daughter of Shelly Sherman, and niece to Jill Sherman, Peyton has been exposed to an abundance of in uential horsemen and horses. In operation since 1975, the family’s Sherman Ranch has produced many successful saddle seat Arabians and Half-Arabians in the show ring and breeding shed. Names like Mystic Bey V, e Winning Guess, Tap Out, Expressamo and Winning A re ll the roster, and that’s just a handful of many standouts with countless national, regional, Scottsdale and Class A titles. And it is no mystery why, considering they were carefully planned for greatness using genetic giants the likes of Huckleberry Bey, GG Jabask, Mamage, IXL Noble Express and A re Bey V to name a few.
It is in her blood as well, that Peyton is taking the reins, literally and guratively. She’s not just a youth who shows horses: she’s a horsewoman, through and through. “Peyton is involved in every aspect of the ranch and breeding program,” says Jill, “not only every chore that comes with the commitment of living on a ranch, but she also helps foal out the babies.”
It has been the starting of the young horses bred at the ranch that has Peyton feeling ful lled. “It kind of happened by accident,” she explains. “I started working some young ones in the round pen and gradually began to ride them.” Her strong work ethic and applied skills have come in hand
on

when at home on the ranch, working with ve of the ranch’s now 3- and 4-year-olds.
Currently, Sherman Ranch’s show string is in training with Joel Kiesner, who Peyton visits as much as time allows between school and ranch responsibilities. When not riding, she soaks up as much knowledge as she can from those at Kiesner Training, watching and asking questions. “Joel and his sta have been very accommodating,” says Peyton, “and I’ve learned so much by spending time there.”
Her drive is not lost on Joel either. “Peyton is one of those kids that has a natural ability with every aspect of horses,” he says. “Whether it’s riding, long-lining or handling a baby, she’s comfortable and able. Her talent is matched by her love of the horses. She will spend every minute of the day watching or helping at the barn.”
e partnership with Kiesner has proven successful for the Sherman Ranch bred horses, with both Joel and Peyton celebrating success at the 2023 Scottsdale Show where they both rode rising star SR Cracklin under, a young Black Daniels son whom Peyton also started and broke to ride. Having proven himself at the 2022 U.S. Nationals with a coveted top ten win in the AEPA $50,000 Half-Arabian Saddle Seat Futurity, the 5-year-old took Champion in the prestigious Half-Arabian Country English Pleasure Junior Horse with Joel aboard, and with Peyton they earned the Reserve Champion title in the JOTR Championship. Not stopping there, both Joel and Peyton will pair up once more with the chestnut gelding at Youth and Mid Summer Nationals, along with Fire It Up CRF, another Half-Arabian English horse.
As she thinks about her last year as a youth rider, Peyton is torn. While she has many fond memories of her youth career, including her favorite, capturing her rst national title on Lotus MEA in the Arabian Country English Pleasure JTR Choice class; this year, she’s looking forward to showing with her new barn friends she has made at Kiesner Training. “While it’s a little bittersweet to have my youth career come to an end, I’m excited for the next chapter, and especially thrilled to be showing our very own home-bred and home-started horses.”

One Judge’s View
She stands watching End gate opens Hooves pound; horses pass Countless eyes watch each stride The crowd cheers Knees flex, hocks snap, nostrils flair Now, pick the winner. From horse to horse the judge glances Serious responsibilities weigh heavily Years of plans, countless dreams, live or die with her decisions Stars fade and change Some hopes become reality as the winner picks himself.
Riders leave Scores tallied Winners enter, one by one Smiles or tears, we all remember –to be there, you’re a winner.

by THERESA CARDAMONE
There is undeniable magic at play when a horse-loving child connects with an equine counterpart. Without the barriers that adults must work to overcome, children and horses can bond effortlessly in a virtual mind-meld of understanding. And when a child is suffering or needs a dose of compassion, there is no better source of comfort.
Athena Vincelli is, according to her mother, Flavia Balaj, a “strong, beautiful, and as sassy-as-they-come” 7-year-old girl who has a passion for Arabian horses. Like most kids her age who share that enthusiasm, she dreamt of one day having a horse of her own. But Athena was facing a huge concern beyond navigating the typical challenges of horse ownership. She was diagnosed with a brain tumor and although initial surgery reduced it by 75%, it then nearly doubled its original size, requiring chemotherapy to try to fight it. The likelihood of her dream coming true seemed nearly impossible.
That’s when several entities combined their efforts to make a difference in Athena’s life. Through her connections with HopeKids, a non-profit organization whose vision is “To restore hope and transform the lives of children with lifethreatening medical conditions…,” Athena met Annette Lennon. A third-generation Scottsdale Arabian horse owner and a cancer survivor herself, Annette is also the mother of a daughter with special needs.
“Back in 2002, my daughter Alissa, who was immune compromised, never left her wheelchair,” Annette explains. “But when we introduced her to Shelby, an old Polish Arabian gelding, she was transformed. He helped to heal her; she soon got out of the chair and never looked back. That’s when I realized the power of equine therapy and decided to create a program that could help more kids benefit from it.” Annette founded Lennon Equine Therapy (LET) nearly 20 years ago as a labor of love, and it is operated today by a small staff of dedicated family and friends, along with several four-footed equine therapists. LET always provides therapy services at no cost, depending solely on donations to fund their efforts. It’s a place where medically challenged kids are always welcome to come and just be themselves, setting aside their worries and soaking up the joy they receive from the horses.
Annette collaborates with HopeKids routinely, connecting compromised children with the healing power of horses. Last March, Athena came to LET with a HopeKids friend, and she has been a regular ever since. “Without HopeKids, we would
never have met Annette,” Flavia explains. “We are beyond thankful for everything that she does for Athena. Going through all of this is hard, and Annette makes it possible for Athena to be a part of the horse world.”
It didn’t take long before Athena was introduced to her “heart horse,” Sahar Kadar, a kind and compassionate 20-year-old Egyptian-bred gelding with a long record as a successful equine therapist. The two developed a loving bond, and it became clear to Annette Lennon that she had the power to fulfill Athena’s desire to be a horse owner. Annette arranged for Athena to become a “co-owner” of Kadar, complete with an elaborate paper-signing party full of fun and games. That generous gesture capsulizes the spirit of the work at Lennon Equine Therapy.
Athena’s outgoing nature revealed a deeply seated wish to be at the horse shows and, in particular, to show an Arabian horse in native Arabian costume. Annette sprang into action, reaching out to other organizations and individuals to see if they would join LET in making Athena’s horse show wish a reality. They were happy to help. Los Cedros USA, a stunning horse training facility modeled after the Moroccan citadels from past millennia, donated their site and helped put together a Lead Line Extravaganza on June 4th of this year. Horse professionals from various disciplines joined the festivities to show their support. The Arabian Horse Association of Arizona contributed a costume and an array of gorgeous ribbons and trophies for each participant. Beaming with pride, Athena was awarded a champion rosette. The Jasmine/Aladdin-themed cake and party that followed was a natural way to celebrate a wish fulfilled.
As this story goes to press, Athena was home from the hospital after enduring the aftermath of her sixth round of chemotherapy. It is our fervent hope that she will soon reunite with Kadar for another dose of Arabian horse magic and remain Athena Bobina Strong
A sincere thank-you to all who collaborated to create Athena’s special horse show: Lennon Equine Therapy, Arabian Horse Association of Arizona, Los Cedros USA, Solderberg Equine, Caddence Performance, Hawk Haven Farm, CR Arabians, Equus Dressage, Teri Hart, Tanya Missurel, Cathy Whitaker, Erik Caddeo, Savanah Lovingood, Jenanoe Overgaard, Maddie Kerfoot, Connie Alexander, Joyce Kirk, and Mickie Krajenke.

THANK YOU to my parents, trainers, and Lara and Lollie Ames, for shaping me not only into the rider but the person I am today. MY FAMILY has provided me with these amazing opportunities that I WILL CHERISH FOREVER. From my first year of walk trot in my pink day coat to my final year as a youth rider, I have learned THE IMPORTANCE OF HUMILITY AND GRATITUDE. It goes without saying, that horses impacted my life more than I could have imagined and I would not change that for anything.
This last one is for my great grandfather and everything he taught me!
2023 YOUTH & MID SUMMER NATIONAL JUDGES’ PERSPECTIVE

ANGELA SULLIVAN
HEATHER STALKER
BETH BARRITT MICHELL COMBS
PERSPECTIVE
JACOBSEN: Positive image—visualize in your head how your will ride to go. If a pattern is involved, know your pattern inside and out and know where your markers are. Ride the class from beginning to end; if something doesn’t go quite as planned, do not give up, keep riding your horse. Participating at the Nationals is special opportunity; enjoy the ride.
PROFFIT: Ringsmanship. How to navigate your horse around the ring while still showcasing it and your own talents. To me this just polishes the whole look. It takes you and your horse to the next
GODER-LARSON: Know your horse. Know the speed and style your horse looks best, because riding harder and faster isn’t always the best look for you and your animal. Balance and finesse are
CLUFF: The importance of groundwork; it is important in their success. Many riders are successful without paying attention to groundwork—they let their trainers do that—but those that desire to be true horsemen do pay attention to groundwork. It is the foundation for developing a great
SULLIVAN: Mental focus and staying positive. I would ask each student to ride the class in their mind first. Break down each gait in your mind, and how you will prepare your horse for each transition. Mentally preparing ahead of time, I believe, really pays off in your class. Remind yourself to keep riding if it was not the transition or response you were asking for and stay calm and soft
STALKER: In looking at things that are important in preparation for a big show like Youth Nationals, or even a small local schooling show, it is important to know what you can and can’t control. You can’t control if you have the fanciest mover in the class, or have a horse with the most extensive experience and/or training, but there are things that you can do that are just as important to
1.Know your test inside and out.Things sometimes go wrong in the ring (your horse could stumble, you could lose your balance, your horse could be naughty or scared for a moment), that can cause a distraction and make it hard for you to remember where to go next, but make the test so familiar that you go on autopilot on directions if something goes wrong. Pay attention to accuracy.Make sure that your circles are round and that you are not falling into the corners on the rail. Make sure you are on the center line when you halt your horse.Little inaccuracies cost a little bit here and a little bit there, but they can add up to a
3.Look between your horse’s ears.Horses must be straight on straight lines and bent evenly around on circles and in corners. If your eyes are not looking in the direction that you are going, then your horse isn’t straight in their work.
Arabian Horse Times | 238 | Volume 53, No. 3
IF YOU COULD CONDUCT A CLINIC PRIOR TO YOUTH NATIONALS, WHAT SKILL WOULD YOU FOCUS ON DEVELOPING IN THE PARTICIPANTS, AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO THEIR SUCCESS?
4. Use all your aids, not just your reins.Your horse should be directed much more by your seat and your leg aids than your reins.Keep working on your balance so that using one of your aids doesn’t automatically involve another aid.
5.Make a partnership with your horse. You will be spending many years learning and improving together. You need to get along and respect each other as partners.
6. Have fun!Even big shows like Youth Nationals are celebrating our relationships with our horses, our instructors and our friends. Don’t treat the competition so seriously that you forget to enjoy the experience, and make memories that will last.
BARRITT: One of the permeating weaknesses I encounter with judging is a lack of knowledge regarding the test a competitor is enteredin. There is a description on the top left-hand corner on the front of every test sheet and it is very clear about the level of rideability for that level. There are also directives to the right of every test movement which are the things a judge is required to evaluate. I see many teams in levels above their skill set and invariably the competitor is not familiar with the directives.
COMBS:I like to work on dressage rider’s relaxation so they can be ready to help their horse. My current theme is “breathe, balance, believe.”
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE ASSISTING ON THE RAIL?
JACOBSEN: Keep assistance to a minimum, keep your voice soft and be positive. The riders have been preparing for this event all year, or for years … trust them; they know what to do.
PROFFIT: Be positive, their time is happening now. Training and lessons should happen before the show ring. There’s only so much someone can fix or do in those few seconds.
GODER-LARSON: Be sure what you are telling your rider is what the judges want to see (for example, when we ask horses to go to the rail, you aren’t telling them to get out in the middle).
CLUFF: It is fine to be intense if that is what works best in that situation, but remember that we judges can often hear what you say— for better or worse—and there is a difference between intensity and rudeness.
SULLIVAN: Always stay positive! The kids are under enough stress as it is. Whether it’s a trainer, parent, or teammate, only give positive encouragement.
STALKER: As a dressage judge, it is important to know that any comments from the rail during a dressage test are considered to be outside assistance and are cause for the horse and rider to be eliminated. My advice would be to think good thoughts and not make any verbal or physical cues to the rider during his/ her test.
BARRITT: Anyone assisting on the rail should pick a fixable weakness. Coaches can overwhelm competitors with too much information 15 minutes before a test. Harmony, ease, and not chasing a horse around are the things I appreciate in a performance.
COMBS:I recently judged a rail class where someone assisting on the rail was hollering something she deemed helpful but the rider was leaning so far off center of the horse that I was concerned they would fall off! So, if someone’s going to help the rider, be on-point!
PERSPECTIVE Arabian Horse Times | 239
WHAT ARE THE SIMILARITIES/DIFFERENCES YOU SEE FROM THE FIRST YOUTH NATIONALS YOU’VE JUDGED TO TODAYS? AND IF THIS IS YOUR FIRST TIME JUDGING YN, WHAT ARE YOUR OBSERVATIONS/EXPECTATIONS ?
JACOBSEN: Youth Nationals has evolved over the years just as the horses and divisions have evolved. We now have more classes for youth in different divisions and age groups. The bond between horse and rider, however, is something we saw at the first Youth Nationals, and I am sure we will be seeing it again this year.
PROFFIT: This being my first Youth Nationals from center ring, I’m looking forward to more in the future.
GODER-LARSON: As with the rest of our industry, the horses and riders are constantly improving. Everyone is at a high level. What hasn’t changed is the excitement for competition and the camaraderie you see amongst the exhibitors.
CLUFF: This is the first Youth Nationals I will be judging; however, I have attended many, and I am constantly impressed with the abilities of these amazing youth.
STALKER: This will be my first time judging Youth Nationals, but as someone who competes in the Arabian world, I am excited to see so many up-and-coming young riders enjoying our breed. The future looks bright!
BARRITT: This is my first time judging Youth Nationals, so in general, what I am seeing are horses being asked to perform in levels above their training. If a level requires a horse to be on the “bit”, and that horse performs above the bit much of the test, then the horse and rider are not preparedfor the test entered.
PERSPECTIVE Arabian Horse Times | 240 | Volume 53, No. 3
WHAT ADVICE/WORDS OF WISDOM WOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE WITH THE COMPETITORS?
JACOBSEN: Enjoy the experience, enjoy your horse, enjoy your friends and remember to always be positive and nice to your fellow exhibitors, coaches, parents and everyone around you.
PROFFIT: Want it for yourself, do it because you love it, do it to fulfill your own goals, and love your horse!
GODER-LARSON: Enjoy the experience! Being here is a reward for your hard work. Winning something is icing on the cake. There are many young people who never get the opportunity to come to this show. Savor the moments you are privileged to experience.
CLUFF: This may be the show of your dreams, or it may not be. But if you and your horse return home healthy, and you accomplish the personal goals you set for your performance, then it was a good show. And there will always be another show.
SULLIVAN: Make sure you are rested! You are an equestrian; stay disciplined and set a schedule for each day. Sleep, eating properly, and hydration are crucial for a successful outcome. Just try your best and walk away from Nationals knowing that you gave it your all! Enjoy the ride and have fun! Congrats on all that you have accomplished this year; these memories will last a lifetime—enjoy it!
STALKER: Enjoy the journey!
BARRITT: Remember why you ride horses. If you ride for results and ribbons, the horse many times is used as a vehicle. No ride will be perfect as these wonderful partners are flight animals; they get distracted, can be unpredictable, do things in competition they have never done at home, but oh, well. There is always another horse show to try again! Be on their side and remember you love to ride, and you hopefully love your horse.
COMBS:Know the rules, enjoy the experience, and love your horse. Dressage riders get a lot of feedback, so be generously patient with yourself and your horse. Always smile!

Grooming Hack:
I love using beeswax to tame flyaways for manes and forelocks. It is also what I use for neat braids. Beeswax is so much better for your hands than sticky spray on products and it works great!

Rhita McNair (1933-2023)
Rhita McNair of Gleannloch Farms passed away on May 30, 2023, at the age of 90.
An original and probably the first female trainer to compete in the big leagues, Rhita was a pioneer and trailblazer. She started dating Tom McNair after he asked to see a horse magazine in one of their ninthgrade classes and they eventually married in Biloxi, Mississippi in 1955. In 1959, they moved to Houston to work for the Marshalls who owned Gleannloch Farms.
Starting with 12 horses, they helped the Marshalls by winning two Horse of the Year awards and many National Championships in the U.S. and Canada. That was followed with the importation of 67 horses from Egypt, building Gleannloch into one of the premier Arabian horse farms in the world, earning Tom and Rhita AHSA Horseman and Horsewoman of the Year in 1986.
At Gleannloch, Rhita was responsible for almost all the advertising and correspondence for the farm, and sewed her families’ show clothes with which they won several national championships. She was an ambassador for the Arabian breed in several countries around the world.
Rhita’s love of teaching was boundless. She fought vigorously to promote the family-oriented atmosphere that was largely responsible for the continued growth of the Arabian breed in America throughout the 60s, 70s and 80s. In the 90’s, her dedication and success was recognized by Region 9 AHA with a Lifetime Achievement Award and in 2014, Rhita was awarded the Trustees Award at the Egyptian Event at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington.
Her contributions to the Arabian horse breed in America will be fondly remembered and is difficult to overstate. She was the epitome of integrity and class.

Charlotte Kay Stieren (1953-2022)
On December 13, 2022, at the young and healthy age of 69, Charlotte (Cindy) Kay Stieren unexpectedly and suddenly passed away in her Florida home.
Cindy was born to Kathryn (Palmer) and Charles Chrs on March 8, 1953. She graduated from Glenville High School in 1971 and continued her education at Albert Lea Tech.
In 1980, Cindy wed her (former) husband, Michael Stieren. They would eventually call a hobby farm near Olivia, MN home, where they raised two children. Cindy worked for Keltgen Seed, and the family business, Emerald Helicopters, as an accountant.
She enjoyed being a homemaker and watching her children show horses, play football and ski. Cindy later chased her dream of being a Gemologist at the Gemological Institute of America, at the age of 51, upon which she worked for JF Kruse Jewelers in St. Cloud. Prior to that, she was a jack of all trades, including owning a furniture store, being a real estate agent and more. Cindy spent the later part of her years with her family at her MN lake home and wintering in Florida.
Cindy took great pride in her family, friends, and church. She had a fierce determination, a generous spirit, and incredible passion. She was witty, independent, loved adventure and travel, was kind and loyal, and loved helping whoever needed her, especially her friends and family.
Cindy is preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her two children, Stephanie (Jason) Medalen and Nathan (Elizabeth) Stieren; her sisters Gloria Schrieber and Mary Ann Graves; along with multiple nieces and five grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held this winter in Florida and this summer in Minnesota for friends and family. Dates TBD. For more info, contact celebratecindyslife22@gmail.com.

Jody (Trygstad) Hoffman (1956 -2023)
Jody Hoffman died unexpectedly of natural causes in her home on May 21, 2023.
Jody was born in Redwood Falls, Minnesota, to Joseph and Florraine Wangen, and raised by her adoptive father, William Trygstad whom her mother married after her father’s passing at age 3. After graduating from Roosevelt High School, Jody began her studies in Agriculture Sciences at the U of M but realized her life’s work would be with horses. She began working at O’Mac Farms in Red Wing, and there met the love of her life, Larry Hoffman. They married in 1982, and in 1983, established Hesten Park in Hastings. In addition to raising two children, Jody and Larry bred and trained Arabian and Half-Arabian horses, winning countless National Championships at shows across the United States and Canada. While Larry focused on the horses, Jody focused on the riders, spending countless hours seated in barn aisles during shows offering sound advice, a shoulder to cry on, or a delicate touch of tough love.
Those who knew Jody considered her the matriarch not only of her home and family but of every community of which she was a part. She bred prize winning bulldogs, remained rooted in her heritage and delighted friends and family with traditional Norwegian Christmas celebrations. She kept her hands busy with needlework and coloring, and her kitchen was always a place of congregation as she enjoyed cooking, baking, and canning.
She was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Wangen, adoptive father, William Trygstad, mother, Florraine Wangen Trygstad Williams, and son, David. She is survived by her husband, Larry Hoffman, children Hillary and Matthew, her “third dad,” Jerry Williams, stepsiblings, and the countless parents, students, friends, and bulldogs whose lives she touched.
Rebecca Durr Vesty (1981-2023)
Rebecca was a woman loved by all who met her. She was loyal to her family, her Arabian horse and in her faith. Her smile and positivity radiated even on her most difficult days, showing all around her what it meant to persevere.
While she has left her earthly body behind, her soul and legacy of love will stay with all who had the good fortune to know her. Thank you, dear lady, for teaching us courage, compassion, positivity and faith, all bundled up in one of the greatest hearts we will ever meet.
Rebecca leaves behind legions of friends and loved ones, all truly better in their faith in God and love of life for having known her, including none greater than the love of her life, husband Stuart Vesty. She was a beloved wife and friend who inspired others with her kindness, strength, and resilience. Her passing is a reminder of the impact that one person can have on the world.
Hinged In Heaven (2012-2023)
Bred by the renowned and respected English breeding program of Prestige Farms, Hinged In Heaven (Nutcracker’s Nirvana x Afires Quintana, by Afire Bey V) was a sight to behold and a formidable competitor; her pedigree screamed talent. The beautiful liver chestnut Half-Arabian mare earned eight national titles mainly in the country English pleasure discipline with amateur rider Jamie Costanzo before beginning her show career with new youth owner and rider Lily Sandell in 2021. Incredibly, she would garner the most rose blankets (four champion and one reserve) at Youth Nationals with Lily in country pleasure and show hack, their partnership and bond apparent, culminating in a 2023 Scottsdale Half-Arabian Country English Pleasure JOTR Championship.
