COMMENTS from the publisher
MEETING THE CHALLENGE
One thing I love about the holiday season is that it’s usually a time when we think about what we can be grateful for. Even if it’s been a rough year, we can look forward to beginning again in January, to finding more joy in the year to come.
As I look back on 2022, here are some of the things that brought me the greatest pleasure—and they all relate to Arabian horses.
My family began the year with a bang. During the Scottsdale show, we held our first Gala and raised funds for two of our favorite charities, the Mayo Clinic and the Arabian Horse Promotional Fund.
In July, we enjoyed the Youth Nationals, which in my opinion is the greatest show our industry has—and not just for the experiences it provides our youth. It never fails to deliver. On a personal basis, this year I was especially proud of my great niece, who raised funds for future scholarships through the Truth or Dare Challenge and by delivering rose lollipops as best wishes to people who were showing and winning.
This past year was notable industry-wide for Canada’s National Arabian Championships, which faced challenges as daunting as it ever had seen. I salute our northern neighbors, who can be very proud of what they accomplished. They came together, met those challenges and put on a show to be proud of.
South of the border, the U.S. Nationals was, as usual, an amazing event. Once again, it welcomed the top competitors in North America and it drew a crowd. Everything felt special, from the horses and horsemanship, to the décor, to the people, to the history the show wrote, and more.
We have so much to be thankful for and I think that’s worth remembering. At the same time, I feel that part of my responsibility as a participant in our industry is to be critical when I believe something needs to be improved, so I also get how easy it is to just go with complaining. The trouble is that complaint, even legitimate and well meant, is the “easy” part. Effecting solutions is the heavy lifting. I think it’s important that we ask ourselves, have we ever volunteered to give back? Have we volunteered to become part of the solutions too? Without people willing to do that, many great things about our industry will not happen. “Giving back” comes in many forms, so we just need to choose the way that fits us best (anything from financial support to the gift of time and effort).
How about we all make a pledge for 2023? Let’s carry the camaraderie and good will of the season into the new year. How about we continue our thoughtful criticism, but refrain from just complaining? Let’s be part of taking this breed forward. Together, we can make a difference.

sk any of the Hagales what the highlight was of U.S. Nationals and they are hard pressed to come up with one singular moment. Their first national show flying under their own barn colors was an extraordinary success in the performance arena, where they’ve had a strong presence since returning to the industry some five years ago. And for the first time, they also made a foray into the halter arena on a national level, finding success there as well.
“Overall, we were very pleased and grateful for the results of this show,” says Jim Hagale. “Hagale Family Arabians had great success and we were honored and excited to hear the names of many champions and reserve champions sired by stallions we own. It was a terrific show in every way.”
THE END OF A CAREER
At 16 years old, CSP Hot Dam (Mamage x The Vintage Rose) has had a long and successful career in the Half-Arabian English and Park divisions, amassing multiple national and regional titles for youth, amateur and open riders.
“We had talked about retiring him at Mid-Summer,” recalls Jennifer. “Even at 16, he still really wants to go, so, we decided to show him at U.S. Before I went in the ring for the Half-Arabian Park Horse Championship, Dad and I decided that if he was champion or reserve, we were going to retire him right on the spot, which would also mean I wouldn’t be able to show him the following day in costume. We were Reserve Champions, and he retired right then and there, going out as a highly decorated, well-known and loved park horse by many.”
Jennifer says CSP Hot Dam was special to her for many reasons—his sire is Mamage (who she owned and rode as a youth rider) and the gelding helped her earn her first national title when the family got back into showing.
“He deserves to be retired and enjoy the rest of his years just being a horse,” she says.
A NEW PARTNERSHIP
When Jamie Hagale unexpectedly lost her Half-Arabian Double or Nuttin (Undulata’s Nutcracker x Ingennue) last year, the family was devastated. “Losing him really put a damper on my excitement about showing,” she says.
Little did she know that her next horse would come to her as the result of a trip she wasn’t even on this past summer. “I got a call while I was at the gym. And I ignored it. Then I got a second call. And I ignored it. And by the third call,

when Jen Wilson, my sister and my mom (Mary Martha) had all called, I thought I better answer the phone.”
The trio happened to be at Stachowski Farms and found Jamie’s next horse, G Eazy (HA Toskcan Sun x Up In The Heir). The flashy chestnut gelding was big and bold, just the way Jamie liked her Half-Arabians. Mary Martha was sold when she first saw him, and told Jen and Jennifer, “That’s him. That’s Jamie’s next horse.” When Jennifer got on for a test ride, she agreed. “There was just something about him and I knew he was the one.”

One last championship ride for Jennifer Hagale and CSP Hot Dam.
Jamie showed Archie (the barn name he was given by Mary Martha) for the first time at the Youth & Mid-Summer National Championships, where the new pair earned a bronze and top ten. Their next outing was U.S. Nationals where they were named Champion in the Half-Arabian Country English Pleasure AAOTR 40-59 class and Reserve Champion in the Half-Arabian Country English Pleasure Maturity.
For both Jamie and Jennifer, this was one of the show’s highlights. “It’s funny, I get more nervous watching my sister show than when I’m showing,” says Jennifer. “I was so excited for Jamie and Archie that I was just shaking.”

Trainer Chris Wilson was equally excited about the horse’s performance. “They won both of their sections and then topped that off with a championship and reserve. He was just about perfect for every class,” Chris says.
For Jamie, G Eazy has opened the performance gate back up. “He kind of ignited my excitement about showing performance again after losing Double or Nuttin,” she says.
FROM OPEN TO AMATEUR HORSE
When Chris Wilson and Jennifer Hagale were warming up ROL Divine Style (Afire Bey V x IXL Miss Firefly) for his Arabian Park AAOTR Championship class, they were a little apprehensive. “He really just kind
of goes around quietly more like a country horse,” says Jennifer. “Joel Kiesner had told us that he was a different horse when he hits the ring, but we were definitely still anxious because he just wasn’t giving us a nice big trot in the warm-up,” recalls Jennifer. Although unsure about making their debut as an amateur pair, Chris and Jennifer decided to trust what they had been told about the horse’s tendency to become a completely different animal when the gate opened.
And ROL Divine Style, known as Duke to most, did not disappoint. “Once we got in there, he had the feel of a race car,” Jennifer shares. “He was moving forward, tight in the turns and just right up there always giving it everything. He was a blast to ride in that class.”

ROL Divine Style+/ and Jennifer Hagale.
The two claimed the Reserve National Champion title, and everyone celebrated with champagne after the class.
ROL Divine Style was not the only beautiful ride by Jennifer of a significant stallion during the week; just a few days prior she also rode the influential sire and many time open National winner, HA Toskcan Sun (Baske Afire x Matoska), to the Reserve Champion title in the Arabian English Pleasure AAOTR 19-49 class.
“It was a thrill to watch Jennifer ride him,” says Jim. “We are so in love with this stallion; he’s absolutely beautiful and has been such a joy to have the last few months. Having him at the show and being able to hear so many of his winning get called out for roses in center ring has been really exciting.”

A NEW ADVENTURE
While taking their time searching for Jamie’s new performance horse, Jim came up with the idea to explore the in-hand discipline. Jamie was game as it would keep her in the show ring.
The family added Esperranzza (Emerald J x Vesperra) to their group of mares. The bay 5-year-old was already a winner, with prior U.S. National, Scottsdale, Breeder Finals and regional titles.
Having never shown halter, Jamie found her go into the in-hand division a bit foreign at first. “Riding a horse through the gate is less nerve-wracking than running one through the gate,” she says. “Andy Sellman has been amazing and has taught me so much in a short amount of time. He has been very supportive knowing this is all completely new for me.”
The

At U.S. Nationals, they were named Reserve National Champion in the Arabian Mare Breeding AAOTH class.
Other halter wins included a championship title for OFW Alikai (EKS Alihandro

Gelding class with Andy Sellman at the lead. The yearling also captured the Reserve Champion title in the Arabian Yearling Gelding AAOTH with Jamie.
OKW Vaquero (Kanz Al Bidayer x RHR Lovely) was named Reserve Champion in both the Arabian Gelding AAOTH (with Jamie) and the Arabian Junior Gelding 3-5 Year Olds with Andy.
“The energy in the halter arena is really contagious,” says Jamie. “Everybody is so pumped up all of the time.”
Jim concurs. “We are really excited to be part of the halter community,” he says. “This was our first year to compete in that arena and we couldn’t be happier with the camaraderie and excitement. It’s a different kind of thrill to have success in that ring.”
A CHAMPION RETURNS
Always a crowd favorite with an enthusiastic following, the stallion SF Aftershoc (SF Specs Shocwave x SF Sweet Elegance) came out of retirement to carry the flag Wednesday in the halter arena and Friday and Saturday in the performance arena. With nearly 250 foals on the ground, the popular stallion stands at the Hagale’s farm in Rogersville, MO.
Chris Wilson said riding him and carrying the flag was an incredible experience. “I think that horse wanted to show again,” he said. “He hit that gate and was ready to go. On Saturday night, he was feeling especially good, so we went for another lap at the trot. It was amazing.”
“We’re just all really grateful and thankful that it was our first show under the Hagale Family Arabians flag, and we were able to experience tremendous success,” says Jim. “We have an incredible, hard-working team and we look forward to many years ahead.”

Perhaps the greatest lesson any breeder learns or realizes over the years of breeding Arabian horses is that the results of breeding is anything but guaranteed. However, with that said - lining up pedigrees that have proven to be consistent in producing outstanding individuals will always rise to the top. Discovered as a yearling at Sandro Pinha’s Arabians International in Scottsdale, it was no surprise Alesia was as exquisite as she was - it was almost expected, as Rae-Dawn Arabians was no stranger to her pedigree, having incorporated the blood of her dam into their show and breeding program in the past; only this time it was a new sire line being introduced into the formula creating a whole new dimension.
Alesia ENB was generations in the making. Bred by Michael Weinstein’s Psynergy Enterprise Developments LLC out of California, Alesia’s pedigree is exceptional and so well thought out. Hailing from an exquisite family of National and International prestige, Alesia’s winning and national champion producing sire Atticus ENB is a son of the great European Bábolna bred El Nabila B, a Brazilian and U.S. National Champion Stallion who has decorated almost every continent where Arabian horses are bred with re nement and strong structure, creating solid foundations for many of the nest breeding programs around the world. Crossing in the ethereal beauty of Om El Benedine, a daughter of Sanadik El Shaklan, and tail female to breed legend Estopa, a mare line descending from internationally acclaimed Om El Arab’s nest mare lines to ever grace the planet, the result is a combination that could not be more electric.
Alesia ENB’s dam, Aliyah Vision PCF, forges together a combination of both beauty and athleticism - herself being a daughter of PCF Vision, himself a son of Marwan Al Shaqab and the spectacular Versace daughter Veronica GA. Through a line to DA Valentino offered by granddam Maria PCF, her pedigree blends in the greats of A re Bey V, Padrons Psyche, and Echo Magnif coo. Of course, this pedigree has brought Rae-Dawn Arabians a tremendous amount of joy and success, such as her older maternal sister, Giana Leah PCF, 2018 Scottsdale Junior Champion Filly, 2018 U.S. National Champion Yearling Filly and 2019 U.S. National Champion Two-Year-Old Filly, who continues to capture admirers the world over and play an important role in the RaeDawn program by making a statement as a world-class breeding mare; while younger brother RD Alidoro dazzled the crowd as this year’s 2022 U.S. National Top Ten Yearling Colt.
Alesia ENB has created a sparkle all her own. As a yearling, she was crowned 2021 Arabian Breeders World Cup Silver Champion Yearling Filly and received the highest score and award for best movement of the show. In April of this year, she acquired the title of 2022 Region 7 Unanimous Champion Two-Year-Old Filly, which brought us to this year’s 2022 U.S. National Championships, where she was masterfully presented by Mr. Alcides Rodrigues, Rae-Dawn Arabians’ resident trainer and manager, to National Champion Two-Year-Old Filly honors. Aside from her big red rose win, Alesia ENB also claimed a top spot in the inaugural Breeding Pays 2-YearOld Filly Futurity with owner Mr. Murray Popplewell.
Just as unique as Alesia ENB is, it is perhaps also the collaboration amongst fellow breeders and lovers of the Arabian horse which is truly what makes her all the more special. One lly representing the lifelong dedication of some of the nest breeding programs in the world, including Om El Arab, PCF Arabians, and Psynergy Enterprise Development; a tremendous group with lots of goodness all the way around with so much to be celebrated.
What’s on the horizon for this beautiful lly? Well, that is yet to be determined. For now, it is rest and relaxation after a very wonderful and ful lling year.

FAVORITE MEMORY
It would be impossible to choose a favorite memory from my time showing Sugar. e rst time I showed her was in Wendell in Scottsdale. She never dropped an ear the entire class and was a complete joy to ride. Winning that class was just the icing on the cake. is summer we attended Region 13 and she was just as fun to ride that week to two Regional Championships. A perfect ending to our career together. Watching Ryan Strand ride and drive her was equally as thrilling. e two of them winning the Country Pleasure Driving will be etched in my memory forever. Our show career was just part of the bond I share with this horse. As beautiful as she is on the outside, she carries with her a heart of gold. I’m so grateful to have this gorgeous partner, my horse of a lifetime.
RETIREMENT PLANS
Sugar will retire in Bucyrus, KS at Liberty Meadows. She will enjoy the good life, getting turned out to play and be a retired show horse. While she has o spring already on the ground, with any luck she will carry her own foal and enjoy motherhood.

ere are so many, it’s hard to choose! One of my favorites would be our 2013 win in the Arabian English Pleasure Maturity. It was a 19-horse nal and I remember I put a lot of pressure on myself since we had won the year prior. I remember right when the gate opened and I pushed him into the trot, he was locked in and in the zone. He continued to get better as the class went on. We ended up winning the class unanimously!
RETIREMENT PLANS
My plan is to bring him home. e rest of his years will be spent trail riding and living it up in a pasture!

FAVORITE MEMORY
My relationship with Hot Dam runs deep, being the son of Mamage, who gave me so many exciting moments and National Championships when I was young and just starting to show.
With my return to the show ring after 22 years, I was looking for a heart horse to get me back to the winner’s circle. I rst saw him with Shan trotting around I had never seen anything quite like it. When I got on him, I thought I was going to y over his head! Mom said, “Absolutely not, we are not buying that horse,” but Dad just giggled and said, “Baby, do you want that horse?” We didn’t listen to the voice of reason and bought the horse.
Our rst show in Spring eld, Illinois was a wild ride—pretty much out of control. Mom said I had no business riding that horse, and Dad said that it was the most fun he had ever had losing.
We eventually went on to win Regional and National Championships and Mom ended up putting her foot down that the horse would never be sold—just live out his life as a horse on our farm.
His retirement was not planned as he was not acting his age—he still loved to show, but at his rst championship class at Nationals this year, we decided if he went Champion or Reserve, we would retire him on the green shavings. It was very emotional for all of us as he was announced Reserve National Champion. e die was cast for his retirement ceremony.
RETIREMENT PLANS
Future plans for Hot Dam include enjoying retired life on the farm in Rogersville, Missouri. He’ll be in pasture by day and sleep cozily in his favorite stall at night.

FAVORITE MEMORY
When I think back, I am reminded of my rst year with Emperors Fire. After my career with his full brother Adams Fire, he had big shoes to ll, but he did so e ortlessly. Emperor and I were never out of the roses as we were named U.S. National Champion our rst year together and every other year we competed.
I also think of the many exciting open classes and work-o s he won with Joel Kiesner, and seeing him win his nal set of roses this year with my mom. I was not able to make his last trip around the Tulsa arena myself due to just having my second baby, but it was a joy to watch him and my mom come together as a team. It was a perfect ending to a storybook career to
have Emperor trot out of the ring one nal time wearing the red roses over his shoulders. But my favorite memory was my nal class on Emperor in 2021. Victor Botha trained Emperor for me that year and Emperor went around the whole class with his ears up, so happy and so light. It felt like we were just oating around the arena. It was one of the softest, best rides I have ever had on him. When picking up our roses, my mom passed my daughter, Opal, up to me for the win photo. at moment just epitomizes who Emperor is—he is a spit re English horse, but with the kindest heart; so kind, that I trusted him completely with my 2-year-old up on his back.
RETIREMENT PLANS
Emperor gets to come home to Rancho Santa Fe, CA, completely sound with many years left in the tank to begin the next chapter of his life. My mom and I will have the time of our lives riding him and his brother, Adam, on the trails together … a couple of fancy trail horses! I can’t wait to spoil him every day with carrots, love, and everything else he deserves!

FAVORITE MEMORY
I have been around a lot of horses over the last 45 years of my life and have NEVER had a bond with a horse like I do with Enrico. He is as beautiful on the inside, as he is on the outside. He absolutely “gets me” … and I get him.
Enrico comes from incredible bloodlines but has a few unique physical traits some would not regard as positive. To me, however, they are super special things that make me love him even more! Always one to favor and support the underdog, Enrico became my favorite, and he is beyond extra special to me. I also truly think that feeling between Enrico and I is mutual.
As an adult learning to ride and show, Enrico is the one who taught me a lot about myself, gave me the con dence I needed, and—more than any person—taught me trust.
I had always been timid and nervous and self-conscious learning to ride, and didn’t know if I would ever feel con dent, much less comfortable, riding. I knew in my gut though, if I was to ever overcome my fears, Enrico would be the horse to help me, but I really struggled and didn’t know if I could do it, until faced with the possibility of losing him when one day my mom said she would sell him if I didn’t ride him. And various people were interested in buying him and they rode him, but it never went well—no one really gelled with him—so that was, in my mind when I decided that Enrico and I were going to be a team. ere was no way I was going to let him leave Strawberry Banks Farm. I was going to do whatever I could to be by his side (or in the saddle), support him and
let everyone know how wonderful he is. In my mind, together, we were going to be something special, whatever that was, truly never even DREAMING of a National Championship!
After years of lessons and practice, my con dence grew, and I was proud to show everyone how special Enrico truly is.
For me, it is bittersweet that Enrico has retired. I am so thankful for all that he has given to me, for all that he has done for me, for all the wonderful memories that we have shared, and that he proudly nished his career as a BEAUTIFUL Champion. He deserves it more than any horse I’ve ever known, and I am so thankful for Brian’s patience and tenacity to help achieve a beautiful result to a beautiful relationship.
RETIREMENT PLANS
I look forward to many more beautiful trail rides around Strawberry Banks Farm with Enrico; they have been some of my most favorite and best bonding moments with the most incredible horse ever!

NATIONWIDE.
CANADA’S NATIONAL ARABIAN CHAMPIONSHIP … From Vision To Reality
ere was considerable uncertainty for most coming to Canada’s National Arabian Championship September 27- October 2 in Alberta’s Red Deer in terms of what to expect. Successfully putting together a horse show in itself is no small feat, but to take the leap to create your own National level show in eight weeks is a valiant e ort. Canadian owners, trainers and exhibitors have had the odds stacked against them for three years now as a result of the pandemic, but thanks to Tex Kam, Murray Popplewell, Dana Romijn, Bob Wasylyk, Gary Millar and the Carrot River Valley association, who were integral to putting this show on, and an experienced group of volunteers, many with over 40 years of horse show and prior Nationals experience, and a whole lotta’ grit and determination, Arabian horse enthusiasts were excited to have not only a show to nally attend, but a National show at that. ey were once again given the opportunity to vie for the coveted rose garland, and even for those whose rides didn’t quite earn them a top six ribbon or better, every single exhibitor radiated gratitude throughout the week because a group of people felt that they were worth the seemingly impossible task and daunting hours it would take to put on this show.
Between the perfect weather and optimistic atmosphere, it was impossible to have anything but a smile as just under 200 exhibitors joined those who stopped at nothing to give them the opportunity to enjoy a National Show in Canada again. “It was most de nitely a feeling of unity and gathering,” says Murray, “there were no VIP sections, as we were all VIP’s.”
e decision to hold this new show in Red Deer, Alberta opened the door for many barns who were unable to make the multi-province journey years prior in Brandon, Manitoba. Often deemed as the heart of the Arabian horse industry in Canada as it’s easily accessible and within close proximity to many Arabian horse owners, breeders, and trainers, it is equally close to two major cities, Edmonton and Calgary, and is surrounded by plenty of hotels, shopping and dining options. Westerner Park is just on the edge of the city while providing urban hustle and bustle just minutes away. It also has excellent proximity to two major airports, is four hours north of the U.S. Border, and is at a facility that is scalable to accommodate whatever number of horses enter (within reason). “It is also a facility that we (and many Arabian shows) have rented previously and held events at for many years,’ says Tex, “so, we are very familiar with its capabilities and facility management.”
With just two months to plan and execute, 169 youth, amateur and open, dressage, sport horse, halter and all other performance classes, including Ranch Rail and Riding, were available to exhibitors, including fantastic vendors who wanted to see the show to succeed as well.

e Canadian National show has always had a wonderful relaxed, no pressure environment. Exhibitor parties and meet-and-greets almost every day were hosted and organized by local clubs and volunteer committees, ranging from breakfast burritos to a large Mexican Fiesta (complete with a piñata, margaritas and a live country band). e exhibitor party the rst day before the show even started was standing room only, and a local pizzeria fed the entire showgrounds with 60 large pizzas for free one evening, while various musicians played over 2-3 days during the events. e opening ceremonies had a pipe band and aboriginal band to entertain spectators and exhibitors alike, and a co ee cart made early morning rounds to the stalls to ensure all were ca einated and ready to hit the ground running from the moment the arena gates opened.
Among the memory-making moments of the show, a few stood out, including Hillary Booth-Weller and her family from Santa Ynez, who traveled the farthest distance to the show. “I asked her if she could be our ag bearer for our opening ceremonies,” shares Tex. “Not only did she say yes immediately, but her horse, DF Khontraban, had never carried a ag before. ey practiced the night before, opened our ceremonies with the U.S. colors, then showed in and earned a top ten in the Senior Stallions and took the Champion roses in Western Pleasure Open— all back-to-back. Hillary’s mother, Sarah, also won the Western AATR Select on Khontraban. e e ort from this family to help out the show and the desire to compete 2,000 miles from home really stands out among so many great memories.”
Also impressive was Arianna Bell, a young lady who although struggles with severe health problems, continues to show her horses with a smile on her face and a grace rarely seen in today’s world. She impressed many with her courage and strength to compete all year.
Other emotional moments included long-time Canadian breeders, the Ray and Marlene Peets Family, on hand to present a trophy in the Open Western Pleasure class that honored their daughter, Sharlene Peets, who had recently passed away, and Murray shares, “Seeing three generations
(grandmother, daughter and granddaughter) all with tears streaming down their faces as the youngest exited the arena wearing Canada’s National Arabian Championship roses … that’s the payday of any show.”
e Arabian horse community is a family, but Canada’s National Arabian Championship show portrayed an unrivaled level of sportsmanship and sincerity to all. A tri-colored ribbon may put a smile on a competitor’s face, but no material item will compare to the lighthearted and hospitable atmosphere that this show brought to exhibitors and supporters alike. Atmosphere, camaraderie, kindness, support, and friendly equals togetherness. Being reunited with Canadian friends for the rst time in several years was sensational, and as horse shows have become far too serious and conventional lately, the opportunity to attend a national level show with such a tranquil environment is one that will have many returning for years to come.
Tex seconds the notion. “It is a show that harkens back to the day when you socialized with everyone at the show. I believe everything starts at the top, including setting the tone. Our management group is one who subscribes to fun, rst and foremost. To be blatantly honest, we are competing for everyone’s leisure dollar. It’s got to be fun … and we bent over backwards to ensure it was that, as well as competitive and made to feel like a National show of old. e level of camaraderie we saw was unlike any we’ve seen for the last 30 years. It was like when I personally got into the business in the 70s. I joked that even people that don’t like each other, sat around tables all week joking, laughing, and swapping stories like it used to be!”
e show has already con rmed that the 2023 event will be bigger, better and more competitive, and held in the newly remodeled Centrium at Westerner Park–a beautiful, two-tier facility which will only add to the prestigious atmosphere of the show. With the recent lifting of mask and vaccine mandates for non-Canadian citizens, it is hopeful that the 2023 show will attract the U.S.-based farms that have ventured to Manitoba in years prior, while the new location in Alberta can continue to accommodate the Western Canadian supporters who made this show such a great success in 2022.

History & Memories Made
BY ALLY EDWARDS
When the leaves change and the weather cools, it means more than just autumn arriving for those in the horse world. For them, October in Tulsa is its proving ground.
A little more than 1,750 horses along with their trainers, riders, and teams converged at the Tulsa Expo Center in Oklahoma, for the annual 56th United States National Championships. Numbers were slightly lower than last year due to quali cations once again being enforced, but that meant the best of the best was present. With almost continuous great weather, the show ran incredibly smooth and all were given the red-carpet treatment with green shavings all nine competition days (thanks to the generous donations of Hagale Family Arabians and the clients of Kiesner Training) horn players (the Hagales), and a multitude of parties. In the Pavilion, the week started with the trail classes then moved to some of the nicest halter horses seen in any ring, ever. e Mustang arena saw a steady stream of working western horses including ranch riding, reining, cow, and equitation classes. Over in the main Ford Truck arena, English, country, hunter, western, and specialty performance horses rode for the roses in one deep class after another.
Almost every pleasure class had an elimination round and the quality of horses and riders never ceases to elevate every year. When the roses are draped over the winners, it truly is a special and deserving win, coming out on top among all the incredible horses entered. e largest classes were the Arabian Hunter Pleasure Junior Horse and the Arabian Western Pleasure Select, each with 54 horses entered. How tting that the two biggest classes are ones for young horses with bright futures ahead and for exhibitors closer to the novice level. Bringing new horses and riders into the industry will only help it grow.

S Arabian Horse Times | 184 | Volume 52, No. 12
New this year were the Breeding Pays Futurity Halter classes. Two classes, one for llies and the other for colts and geldings, awarded $260,000 to breeders, owners, and amateurs in the top ten. Additionally, a silent and live auction were held to help raise funds for next year. Gold, silver, and bronze champions were crowned; Gold Colt going to Aria La Croixx and Gold Filly, OFW Luxxury, both presented by Andrew Sellman.
e main ring had its own special moments. Most will unanimously agree that LaRae Fletcher-Powell would have been incredibly proud of both her sons, as Colby picked up the top title in the Half-Arabian Western Pleasure Open with Fixations Khash, and Skylar won the incredibly deep Arabian Western Pleasure Open with Gazali VC. ese two very emotional wins had the packed stands teary eyed and on their feet for standing ovations.
Also exciting was Bill Castro’s GSF Alejandro winning his eighth consecutive national championship in the Half-Arabian Park Horse, and seeing the return of two of the industry’s top breeding stallions, ROL Divine Style and HA Toskcan Sun, to the performance ring. Both were shown in the amateur English and Park classes by Jennifer Hagale to reserve wins. But no matter how successful, owners having fun with their horses is what it’s all about.
e futurity and maturity classes continue to grow bigger every year. With big payouts and top-quality horses, these end up being some of the most competitive classes of the show. Professionally guided to compete in the futurities with their trainers and then only a couple years later in the maturities with their amateur owners, Arabians are one of the most willing and trusting breeds able to develop demeanors that allow them to safely carry amateurs around the ring. Breeding itself also seems to be
getting more and more successful as the quality of these horses raises each and every year. e maturity classes especially, exhibited some of the most beautiful horses in the entire show.
With everything nally back to normal, exhibitors were able to get together and enjoy barn parties and special events. e AEPA and Breeding Pays hosted catered events for all to attend and socialize, and there were also several catered sponsored events in the Pavilion on the last weekend so everyone could have dinner while watching the big halter classes. e halter arena was always packed with spectators watching the most beautiful horses the breed has to o er.
e show sta must be acknowledged for another successful nationals. From the board of directors, and show commission, o cials and stewards, to the judges, ring announcers, awards room and sel ess volunteers, the sessions ran in a timely manner, the stands were full, and another round of titles were rightfully won. e sportsmanship between all the exhibitors is something for our breed to be very proud of. Many handshakes and congratulations were exchanged at the out gate so everyone in the top two, the top ten, or those who got the gate, were given kind words about their rides. Retention and growth are what will hold this industry together and good sportsmanship, horsemanship and commitment to the breed are the best ways for those to succeed.
Overall, a very fun show was had for all who came. U.S. Nationals is one of the best shows of the whole year and the perfect conclusion to every show season. Seeing everyone come together to show o what they have been working on all season with their Arabian partners makes it everyone’s favorite part of October. Plans have surely been made for next year as everyone goes home to start preparing to do the whole thing all over again!

Arabian Horse Times | 254 | Volume 52, No. 12
Champion Purebred/Half-Arabian Native Costume Ridden by Christy Higman-Clements for the Peterson Family
November 25th and 26th was the weekend heard about around the Arabian horse world, and it has the entire industry abuzz with inspiration and excitemtent.
What began with simply a vision, some generously o ered support and roll-up-your-sleeves hard work, resulted in something far more than the incredible outreach and $160,000+ in payouts o ered in six classes highlighted at the historic AHAF Holiday Festival Horse Show. What resulted was million
dollar smiles of thousands who came through the gates of the World Equestrian Center, Ocala, and when they were introduced to our beloved Arabian horses ... and it was magic!
“Cra ing something new to build on something old without compromising the integrity of one, the other, or both is a very interesting undertaking,” says Mary Trowbridge. “On November 29, 2021, when six of us sat down with the World Equestrian Center (WEC) sta in Ocala following the 53rd Annual Arabian Horse Association of Florida’s AHAF Holiday Horse Show, it didn’t really occur to those at the table that we were undertaking something unusual. We just all knew it was the right time and place to try. Our idea was simple, we thought.
1. Create more excitement by incorporating either existing or new prize money horse show classes into the show, so we would attract more entries to entertain with and raise awareness of the event among our internal community; by holding those classes in the incomparable outdoor ring, in the evening, under WEC’s incomparable Holiday Lights Festival; and incorporate some di erent types of classes that would entertain participants, and entertainment acts that would appeal to non-horse owners. We also hoped to add in some spectator friendly “edu-tainment” with color commentary from judges as well as announcers, and a chance for the spectators to join in with the judging.
2. Build an Arabian Horse Experience during the daytime with speci c Ambassador horses whose only job during the show would be to engage with new people, one or two or three at a time, and allow our horses to do what they REALLY do best, engage with us human beings, and entertain and educate them while we were at it.
3. And nally, to let the breed engage with the Ocala community by bene tting area charities that would resonate with the people we were targeting and let them see how giving both our horses and the people they own are.
Fast forward 12 months, with support of many forward thinking individuals, and a community that believed ... it happened.”
“Probably the most exciting and beautiful horse show I have ever been to. WEC is just amazing— the Christmas decorations, the atmosphere, the incredible horses, the packed grandstands … it’s hard to explain, but rst class all the way. Along with all that, the very important Keystone Ambassador Horses and the Amazing Horse Woman Experience Barn introduced hundreds of families and children to the beautiful Arabian horse. is needs to happen everywhere! We sent so many people on to local barns and lesson programs. Words cannot describe it. It was an incredible Experience!!”

It was an incredible honor to be part of this event, and to be allowed to integrate our ideas and dreams into your beautiful horse show—we are so grateful.
Ultimately, I think this is the best possible example I could imagine of how fantastically things succeed when we are all working together for the good of the whole, which should always, always be with what serves the best interest of our irreplaceable Arabian horses. Together, we win.”

e Arabian Ambassadors stole the show! ere were 10 in all (six geldings, three stallions, and one mare), and they came to the party suited up and ready to love! ousands came through the Amazing Horse Woman Experience barn, and witnessed rst hand, their magni cence and kindness. e barn was lled with games, face painting, demonstrations and clinics. e public certainly showed their desire to touch our horse and the number of sel es is countless.
“Having stalled right next to the Keystone Arabian Horse Experience aisles, I witnessed rsthand what the Keystone Committee, Laurie Salmi and the AHAF Board have accomplished. is weekend at the World Equestrian Center was actual magic … the Christmas lights, the sound of Christmas music in the air, the beautiful facility, and everywhere we turned, were unicorns in the guise of beautiful Arabian horse Ambassadors.
What this small group of people created was the exact opposite of the virtual living to which so many of us have grown accustomed to over the last several years. Here, they o ered the chance to feel, smell, and experience in real time, beauty, talent, and athleticism up close and personal in the form of the Arabian horse. For hundreds of children, it was a weekend they will never forget; I am sure this experience will ll their dreams with magical images for many years to come. I wish everyone could have seen the joy on the faces of almost every person at this event, coupled with wonder at the beauty around them.
Even I, who have traveled the world to watch Arabian horse events, have never seen anything quite like the Experience at WEC, starting Friday night when the facility turned on their Christmas lights, and the barns were full of people seeing our magical Arabian horses for the rst time.”

Saturday night kicked o with a second Stallion Showcase and entertainment followed by AHAF’s Achievement Awards and In-Hand classes. It was a beautiful setting for watching HalfArabians and purebreds charge into the ring for the spectacular Native Costume class sponsored by Barta Show Horses, all vying for the win and the reward of a beautiful new costume.
“ ere is no doubt that the Keystone Event accomplished its mission to highlight the Arabian horse to a larger segment of the population.
Both nights the stands were full for the classes and entertainment, and Ambassador’s Row was the center of engagement for all ages and walks of life. Indeed, a very busy place with guests interacting with the horses and owners. e interest in the breed was genuine, many not familiar with the breed walking away saying they wanted to learn more. e event showcased the versatility of the breed both in and out of the arena.
My favorite was a young man with a big smile interacting with the horse and the horse’s total attention on the young man.
My warmest thanks to all who made this event a reality and a big success. Certainly, a template for future events.”

“Our hearts were full and our love and dedication for the Arabian horse grew even more a er the Keystone Ambassador event. We had the beautiful, ea-bitten grey Arabian mare Mary Maya V to represent Conway Arabians. ‘Mary’ met hundreds of people over the four days she was there and every person got to feed, pet, groom, learn about her story, and some were even lucky enough to sit on her!
Everyone learned that the Arabian horse is the ‘Horse that loves you back’ and that they are ‘Bred to Move You’ with their kind attitude and beautiful spirit. ey were all excited and grateful for the opportunity to meet an Arabian and very appreciative of the extra perks they received in their bags, which included magazines, coloring books and treats. We were proud to be part of this incredible experience and we are looking forward to supporting the Keystone event in the future.”

ARABIAN PROFESSIONAL & AMATEUR HORSEMAN’S ASSOCIATION
TRAINER CHALLENGE CUP
This year marks the fourth year of the Arabian Professional & Amateur Horseman’s Association (APAHA) Trainer Challenge Cup.
The APAHA Trainer Challenge Cup is awarded each year to the winning trainer in each of 13 futurity classes at the U.S. National Arabian & Half-Arabian Championship Horse Show in Tulsa, Okla. This award is given annually as a recognition of the talent and dedication required to successfully introduce young prospects into the performance, halter and working western disciplines.
If and when a trainer wins the APAHA Trainer Challenge Cup three times, the Cup is permanently retired to that trainer’s barn and the trainer receives a check from APAHA for $500. Brett Becker earned this honor in 2021 with his third Half-Arabian Western Futurity win in 2021. Two-time winners include, Rudolfo Guzzo in the Arabian Futurity Colts, Joel Kiesner and Jim Stachowski in the Arabian and Half-Arabian English Futurities; Joel Gangi in the Half-Arabian Country English and Crystal McNutt in the Half-Arabian Reining.
“This Trainer Challenge Cup exemplifies the part of APAHA’s mission statement that points to the pursuit of excellence in all things related to our sport,” says John Ryan, APAHA President. “We want to continue to recognize and reward those who are turning out great horses on a consistent basis. It is a nice complement to the other programs in our breed that recognize breeders and owners,” he added.
This year, two Trainer Challenge Cup presentations carried a special meaning. The Arabian Country Futurity cup was presented in honor of the late Irwin Schimmel, and the Half-Arabian Western Pleasure Futurity cup was presented by Brad Hill and Kristen Wallace in honor of the late Ty Wallace.
Each Trainer Challenge Cup has been made possible by generous sponsors who committed to support the program for a minimum of three years. According to Katie Harvey, Vice President of APAHA, “When we first gauged sponsor interest, it was quickly noted that this type of program was something sponsors were interested in. They recognize the value of supporting trainers and their talents.”
“From a trainer’s perspective,” shares Jim Stachowski, winner of the 2019 and 2022 U.S. National Half-Arabian English Pleasure Futurity, “it is a nice nod of recognition for bringing these young horses along and winning a class that is awarded based on the future of our breed.”
The Trainer Challenge Cup is one of many programs that APAHA supports. APAHA is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting a fair and level playing field in the horse show arena, the kind and ethical treatment of horses and people, and the promotion of excellence in all things related to the Arabian horse. 2021 U.S. NATIONALS JUDGES’ REVIEW
WHEN PRESENTED WITH COUNTLESS NUMBERS OF THE BEST THE BREED HAS TO OFFER FROM THIS YEAR’S COMPETITIONS, WHAT WAS YOUR PROCESS FOR PICKING OUT THE 2022 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS?
Kim Morgan: The entrance and particularly the walk, starts the process. This is the time you see the horses in their most natural state. When they come to the middle for individual presentation, I have the opportunity to see features up close and examine feet and legs more clearly. The final judging offers the opportunity to compare the individuals for the final decision.
Van Jacobsen: My process for selecting my placings, whether it is in a section or the finals is really the same process I use when judging any class. I always make sure I know the specific class specifications and then look for the horse that is doing the best job fulfilling the class specifications. I will generally make notes where I think the horse may end up on my card and place the numbers near the top, middle or bottom. I will then plus or minus horses as the class goes on, but I do not spend a lot of time looking for the numbers, as I know where a given horse may have been based on my initial impression. It is certainly not uncommon for a middle horse to move up to the top as the class progresses. I also have a line that is for horses that I do not feel should place in the class; if a horse goes below the line, in most circumstances it will not rise above the line. Having a consistent system is what is important to me and everyone has a different system that works best for them!
Jody Lasalle: The class specifications as listed in the USEF rulebook.
Lewis McKim: Firstly, the overall quality of horses was overwhelming in each of the classes in which I was assigned to judge.
The process which works best for me is that first impressions are paramount. I’ll usually have a “contenders list” and then let the class sort itself out with individual horses being transferred onto my “to place” list. From my experience, the true winners usually rise to the occasion.
Susan Witte: The process for me in ranking any class, is to let the class unfold and let the horses rank themselves. In following the specs given for each division, it allows me to select those that not only meet the criteria, but reward those that shine.
Richard Wright: Having been a trainer/coach my entire life, I feel that judging is just an extension of the appraisal process we engage in every day. Sorting horses at the level needed at U.S. requires a brutal focus on the credit-earning performances, while giving every horse in the ring an opportunity for success.
Leo Fourre: In the working western division, the horses are judged individually by a numerical system which requires the judge to evaluate each maneuver of a prescribed pattern and assign a numerical value to that maneuver. The range of maneuver scores is from +1 1/2 to -1 1/2 in half point increments with 0 (zero) indicating a correct maneuver with no elevated degree of difficulty which would deserve a plus
score, and no incorrect parts of the maneuver which would deserve a minus score. These individual maneuver scores are then added to or subtracted from 70 which is the value each horse has as they enter the arena. At the end of the pattern, we do the math and that becomes the score for that horse on that particular pattern.
In the working western division at the U.S. Nationals, there were generally five judges, and at the end of each pattern the high score and the low score were thrown out and the remaining three scores were totaled to determine the ultimate placings for the top ten and the national champion.
Cyndi Robbins: My process is simply sticking to the rules and guidelines for each class as the presentation of each horse begins. I follow maneuver description guidelines and apply penalties as dictated to for each class for every exhibitor. My champions rise to the top sticking to those guidelines and rule applications.
Jim Porcher: Most of the classes I judged use a scoresheet so I don’t “pick out” the national champions as much as I score the obstacles or the horse’s conformation and the scoresheets arrive at the placings. One needs to trust one’s experience/eye/standard and let the scoresheet do its thing. I was comfortable with all the final placings and feel the system is working.
WAS THERE A PARTICULAR MOMENT DURING THE 10 DAYS THAT MADE YOU FEEL THAT THE FUTURE OF THE BREED IS SECURE?
Kim Morgan: There wasn’t a particular moment, however, the high quality of the horses continued from the beginning of the week to the last day. By the end, I felt the future of the Arabian halter horse is in a great place going forward.
Van Jacobsen: It was evident to me within the first couple of days that the U.S. Nationals was going to be a special show this year. It was apparent that many owners, trainers and concerned individuals contributed to make this show special. The green shavings were the first thing that jumped out at me and the list goes on, from the various gifts for the winners of classes and all the other contributions that made the show feel like it was the Arabian horse community’s championship event!
Jody Lasalle: The Arabian breed is secure.
Lewis McKim: There wasn’t one moment in particular, but in general, I felt the classes were well filled with each entry deservedly competing for top honors and being presented in a very competitive manner. I applaud the entire show management for being very pro-active in trouble shooting various situations. Considering these factors, I do indeed feel the Arabian horse breed is secure.
Susan Witte: There was more an overall feeling during the entire show that we have breeders working to secure the future of the Arabian horse. The numbers of new stock presented in the futurity and junior horse divisions showed extreme quality and athletic ability.

2021 U.S. NATIONALS JUDGES’
REVIEW
I think we all have to appreciate and honor the Arabian horse, its history, service and devotion to mankind. Let’s remember its trademark as the “family horse”. Seeing the volume of lifelong owners, breeders, trainers and exhibitors at nationals gave me peace that the breed is secure.
Richard Wright: I feel the most encouraging aspect of the show was the vast cross section of horses that are new to the nationals scene, coupled with an equal number of amazing animals returning for another of many successful appearances there. This is a testament not only to the development of new stock but the wonderful care and support available to a seasoned competitor.
Cyndi Robbins: Yes, watching not only the great exhibition of the breed by the exhibitors with great accuracy and improvement, but seeing the camaraderie by the exhibitors from the back gate. Everyone was so supportive of their competition and through this, the future of the breed will be secure.
Jim Porcher: The trail competition continues to rise and I was pleased with the level of showmanship exhibitors as they are improving, but the numbers in the Performance Halter and the quality of those entries was most impressive, particularly the purebreds. I was comfortable with all the horses who ended up on top and commend all the horses who scored high on multiple cards. One judge can’t sway the system and, once the scores are converted to placings, it truly is a Majority Opinion System or MOS.
WHAT WAS THE EXCEPTIONAL ASPECT OF THE SHOW FOR YOU, AND DO YOU WISH TO SEE ANYTHING CHANGE?
Brian Ferguson: I very much enjoyed the atmosphere in the Pavilion. The arena was beautiful. I felt that Scott Christmas and Scott Benjamin both did exceptional jobs. Scott Christmas worked very hard creating suspense and anticipation while announcing the winners. Scott Benjamin’s color commentary and background added a great deal to overall success of the show.
I also felt that everyone on the Halter Committee worked very hard to make the U.S. National Championships an exceptional horse show. I was also pleased to hear all of the announcements inviting those from other arenas to come and witness the beautiful halter presentations.
Kim Morgan: Again, quality throughout all the classes. Show management did an exceptional job preparing the arena and creating an exciting environment for exhibitors and spectators. The announcer was fantastic and kept the excitement going for every class. The gate people and stewards kept the flow of horses coming in perfectly.
Van Jacobsen: The community taking ownership of aspects of the show and working with the U.S. National Show Commission to make this a premier event!
Jody Lasalle: The U.S. National Show Committee is doing an incredible job. Less classes would ensure a larger spectator base.
Lewis McKim: I will say the most exceptional aspect of the show was the professionalism and comradery demonstrated by each of the show officials both in and outside of the show ring with whom I had the pleasure of working.
Susan Witte: The exceptional aspect of the show for me was all that encompassed the Ford Truck Arena. The arena looked beautiful and the opening ceremonies were moving. The center ring staff, gatemen, paddock, etc., were all on top of their game. The always professional ring men kept us safe and on track. It was an honor and privilege to stand with fellow judges to adjudicate classes that contained the best horses in the country. The incredible horsemen, professional and amateur, exhibiting elite levels of talent and skill. And above all, the horses, who ask for nothing and give everything.
Richard Wright: I felt that there was a concerted effort in every area to refine and improve the show’s function as well as its appearance. From the green shavings to the drastic reduction in the lag time getting horses in the ring between classes, I felt there was an ongoing and fluid effort to improve the show in every way.
Leo Fourre: The most rewarding aspect of the show for me was not a particular moment but the large participation in the ranch classes in general. The class sizes across the board were large and very competitive, not only for the professional riders but for the amateurs. The amateurs of all levels seemed to be enjoying their classes and were not intimidated to try this relatively new addition to the working western division. To me that is very rewarding.
Cyndi Robbins: One of the most exceptional aspects of the show for me was the teamwork by the entire show crew. Everyone was extra willing to help out and communication skills were well performed. As a judge, I really appreciate that. I might want to see scores per judge sent through with computer tablets in the future and get rid of the walkie talkies; they can be a little distracting.
Jim Porcher: Running a show of that size and scope is a tremendous undertaking. I think the AHA Staff and U.S. Commissioners listen to exhibitors and try to do everything in their power to make it a great show. I appreciate how they try to stay fluid and adapt to necessary changes, but they don’t make knee-jerk reactions, relying on the combined experience of all concerned to make the best decisions. It was an honor to participate as an official and watch all those wheels turning around us as we were allowed to do our job.
WHAT CLASS, HORSE, OR PERSON EXHIBITOR OR OTHERWISE POPS INTO YOUR MIND WHEN THINKING OF THE U.S. NATIONALS, AND WHY?
Donnie Bullock: In the Halter arena this year, the spectacular quality of horses and degree of horsemanship combined with an abundance of sportsmanship made the honor of judging this division one of my best experiences. I applaud the breeders, owners and exhibitors for sharing their most beautiful horses with us. I am always a little partial to the mare classes and this year was no exception. The Sr. Mare class was stunning—extreme quality throughout. The winning mare, Lan Chavela, was just simply beautiful. I also had the honor to judge the

2-Year-Old Filly Breeding Pays Futurity class that had exceptional quality entries throughout! Getting to witness the quality of horses, enthusiasm of the participants both professional and amateur, and the spectator involvement was inspiring and is surely a positive step forward for the Halter community.
Brian Ferguson: I will say that myself and my fellow judges were beyond honored to render our opinions about such a magnificent group of horses, that were presented to their ultimate by an amazing group of horsemen.
Kim Morgan: Every class had special individuals etched in my mind forever. The Futurity Filly class stands out for me as most impressive. As they came in, it was evident there was great depth and certainly more than 10 horses that should be top ten.
There were so many great horses and the level of horsemanship was incredible. I was so proud of the job the trainers and handlers did presenting horses at a high level, yet very dignified. I saw a beautiful look in the horses’ eyes and great appreciation of the horses from the handlers. That was truly a blessing for our breed.
Van Jacobsen: There are so many talented horses and riders in various divisions. However, I do think the U.S. National Show Commission, the staff and all of the volunteers that work to make this show so special should be commended. Teamwork and unity are what our community needs now and it was evident at the U.S. Nationals.
Jody Lasalle: U.S. Nationals had many spectacular classes and horses. It was a very enjoyable 10 days.
Lewis McKim: Classes that stood out in my mind were the Western Pleasure classes (Open, Amateur and Futurities). The depth and the quality of horses was exceptional; in particular, the Open Half-Arabian Western Pleasure class, it was extremely competitive, not to mention the outstanding way in which it was called.
Susan Witte: The class that stood out to me the most was the Arabian English Pleasure Open. The class had so many exceptional individuals that were presented in an exemplarily manner. On any given day, my top five placings could have been the winner. They were solid, finished horses in their prime. The balance of the class was also a deep field of competitors. Ranking them was a fine line with only degrees of separation. It was an exciting class to judge and one I will always remember!
Richard Wright: For so many reasons I felt the Open Western became the heart of what our shows should represent. A trophy given in honor of a revered colleague no longer with us, awarded to another who has also experienced recent tragedy. In a class full of excellent horses and riders that could be legitimately pinned in any number of ways, the support and true sportsmanship exhibited was both humbling and incredibly uplifting and something that I will NEVER forget. For me, that was a benchmark that we should all try to equal, and seldom can.
Cyndi Robbins: I have to say, two young male exhibitors pop into my mind: Skylar and Colby Powell. Even with the passing of their mother, LaRae, they stayed true to all she taught them. They exhibited their
horses exceptionally and even when something went wrong, they continued showing to the best of the horse’s ability and supported other exhibitors as well. So great to see!
Jim Porcher: Tracy Dowson and Little Bit of Boom had an outstanding go in the HA/AA Western Trail AAOTR semi-final. The horse was relaxed though its entire body and was perfectly cadenced. It was ridden to every obstacle with precision and confidence. I loved how rhythmic the ride was and Tracy rode with such skill that her final score on my sheet was an 80. I have never given an exhibitor an 80 before, but I was perfectly confident in scoring her that high for her ride.
