2025 Youth Nationals Coverage

HOLLYWOOD TOI

Some horses’ legacies are steeped in long successful show records. Some horses’ legacies are built on their winning progeny. And then there are the extremely rare horses whose legacy is multiplied by how they continue giving, long after their time on this earth is over.

Such is the case with PAF Hollywood Toi (Matoi x NM Beverly Hills), the 2003 bay gelding who excelled in the English division. When he passed away during the 2014 Half-Arabian Saddle Seat Championship class, everyone was devastated. And none more so than riders Emme Moore and Jenny Lau, both of whom rode the gelding to championship titles during their youth careers under the tutelage of Vicki Humphrey and Jessica Clinton.

Just 18 and 19 at the time of Hollywood’s passing, the two were in shock and traumatized. But instead of letting the pain consume them, they made good of his death with the establishment of The Hollywood Toi Foundation. Since 2014, the organization has been able to award more than $200,000 in grants and scholarships.

“When Hollywood passed, support poured in from all corners of the community,” says Emme. “It meant so much to us during a really difficult time. We wanted to find a way to give back to that same community while honoring Hollywood’s memory as best as we could.”

Neither had any experience in creating a nonprofit organization but full steam ahead they went. By the following year, they had obtained official 501(c)3 status and were on their way to helping other riders participate in Youth Nationals.

The two organized fundraisers, solicited sponsors, planned events and worked tirelessly to honor Hollywood’s legacy. One of Jenny’s favorite events was their very first fundraiser, the Trainer Equitation Class held at Region 14. “Trainers brought horses just so they could ride in that

class,” she recalls. Other efforts throughout the years included donkey races, a “Men of AHA” calendar, artwork auction, hamster ball races and personal fundraising efforts.

Ultimately, the Hollywood Toi Foundation was able to award sponsorships for riders to participate at Youth Nationals. “Every year, we awarded eight $2,000 sponsorships to deserving young riders to help them afford the opportunity to go to Nationals,” Emme explains. “Over the years, we have been able to read essays from some pretty talented, caring and hardworking kiddos. Helping them achieve their goals was always a privilege and

the most difficult part every year was always having to select only eight, because there were so many deserving young riders every time.”

In addition to those sponsorships, the Foundation awarded Hollywood Toi Foundation memorial trophies and college scholarships to the champions in both the Arabian and HalfArabian Saddle Seat Championship classes.

Today, both are out of college with careers and living in New York. This year, they made the difficult decision to not actively seek additional funds or give away any new dollars (those who have already been awarded college scholarships will still receive them).

“We’re incredibly grateful to our donors and this community for making this foundation possible,” says Emme. “While it felt like the right time to bring this chapter to a close, it wasn’t an easy decision because of how wonderful the youth riders and their families have been. We’ll always cherish the memories and the impact this foundation allowed us to make.”

Jenny concurs. “We needed this outlet to help deal with our own trauma,” she says. “But it felt like the right time.”

The Hollywood Toi Foundation, born from the profound grief of two young riders, has ensured that one horse multiplied his impact on the Arabian breed not just on those that loved and knew him personally, but on dozens of other riders, most of whom never knew the horse personally, but who now embody his living legacy.

IA Year Of Firsts With A Girl’s Best Friend

Noble Edition & Ella

f dogs are a “man’s best friend” then girls get to claim horses as theirs. Noble Edition CRF (Eddie) and Ella Frederick exemplify this kind of bond. They found their way to each other nine years ago. The duo has competed together every year since her final year of walk/trot competition. Through many trials, tough rides, and patience, they recently reached the pinnacles of national champion and reserve national champion at the 2025 Youth Nationals. They won the Arabian Country English Pleasure JTR 15-18 Select and were reserve in the Arabian Saddle Seat Equitation 15-18.

Ella and her mom Kim care for and train Eddie at Foxfield Arabians, their homebase in Michigan – with Ella carrying most of the responsibility. The last nine years have been full of every emotion, but at the end of it all, Ella simply states, “he is my best friend.” She says that Eddie struggled with the double bridle in the early days – a necessary and important piece of equipment in the English divisions they compete in. Not many 10-year-olds are trying to teach horses how to properly do their job, but since the beginning, it has been Ella and Eddie against any hurdle.

“We grew together,” Ella re ects on those early days compared to where they are now. ey didn’t have the bene t of consistent professional help. Whether she was conscious of it or not, Ella instead honed in on the thing that set them apart more from the horses and riders they would compete against – their bond.

“I would call our bond unlike any other,” she says. “We are so connected. He knows every cue I taught him. He knows exactly how to make me laugh … and he knows how to get the most treats out of me.”

Once they got the hang of the country division, Ella started teaching Eddie things like show hack, side saddle, and equitation. And their time at home has a mix of working on what will be showcased in the show ring, along with their fair share of bareback rides. ey became inseparable. Eddie and Ella trust each other, which made the rest come easier.

“ eir bond has grown so much over the years with the fun things they do together,” Kim says. “Eddie is excited for whatever that day’s adventure brings, whether it is a trail ride or getting in the trailer for another show.”

Along with the pride and lessons that her daughter has earned and learned through her relationship with Eddie, Kim is also grateful for what Ella has gained by being part of the Arabian horse community.

“Showing in the Arabian circuit has taught Ella so much,” she adds. “She has for sure learned the value of commiting to anything she puts her mind to. She also can speak to the public without being nervous. e horses have also taught her empathy. And that sometimes things don’t work out the way you had planned or hoped for.”

ings went even better than they could have planned or hoped for in Oklahoma City. Having done all the work herself, Ella and her mom can hardly articulate their excitement.

“ e feeling of my number being called felt so surreal,” Ella remembers. “ ese were my rst sets of national roses. e reserve championship in the equitation was my biggest accomplishment. I taught Eddie how to pattern, and we were competing with the best riders.”

Eddie is soaking up his time at home, lled with trail rides and treats as they gure out what is next for them. No matter what comes next, they’ll be best friends forever. n

RISING STARS OF THE ARABIAN BREED

e passing of July signals another completion of the Youth and Mid Summer Nationals. Traveling from all over the country to Oklahoma City, just shy of 800 Arabian and Half-Arabian horses along with their riders and families converged to compete for a national title. Over the course of nine days, these horses truly put on a show to highlight the incredible versatility of the Arabian breed.

e lights were sparkling for all exhibitors and attendees in the new OG&E Colosseum at the Oklahoma City State Fairgrounds. Only in use for a couple months, this beautiful new arena housed the main ring performance classes where national championship titles were crowned in hunter pleasure, western pleasure, saddle seat, and specialty divisions. All the exhibitors appreciated having an updated and modern new arena to show in. e Performance arena was one of the busiest as it held the ever growing working western classes including ranch, reining, and trail. Across from the Performance ring, the jeans and hats were swapped for breeches and helmets at the Specialty arena where there was a constant ow of sport horse, dressage, equitation, and jumping classes. What makes this show so appealing to exhibitors is the wide range of division options o ered, as well as classes for youths, amateurs, and professionals. It’s a great option for families to show together and is a one-stop destination for a chance at a national title in every division you do.

Even though there were some new adjustments with the old Jim Norrick arena not yet torn down all the way, the show generally ran very smoothly. A plethora of activities were o ered to entertain the kids like a scavenger hunt, stick horse class, and golf cart parade, and in the arena, there was the annual dog costume contest and dog races that are always a popular event. New and fun this year were the addition of an “egg-and-spoon” and” ride a buck” exhibition classes that were very entertaining! Of course, it was the typical hot Oklahoma summer but the new arena was a great place to cool o while also getting to watch some classes. Also present was the AHA Chill Box where kids could go cool o and play games and activities together in between showing. One evening, graduating seniors were all honored and celebrated their scholastic achievements, as well as the completion of their youth careers.

Lily Sandell

While class sizes didn’t have too many cuts throughout the week, the caliber of horse and rider teams still made it very clear that this was a national level competition. e hunter classes remained the biggest with some of the country, ranch, and dressage classes also bringing in large numbers. It was reassuring to see the fairly even spread of numbers throughout each arena. And regardless of class size, it was always a beautiful group of Arabian horses being presented which is a real testament to our industry’s breeders and trainers creating this level of horsepower.

Top rose earners were some of the show’s most memorable highlights, including Lily Sandell, who had a standout show winning 12 championships or reserves on her ve horses; Logan Grinton winning four national 10 & under championships across three di erent divisions and two arenas, and all with di erent horses (the future is bright for this young lady!); and in the western arena, sisters Isabella and Emilia Sobral raked in 13 sets of roses together across multiple western divisions including ranch, trail, showmanship, and horsemanship. Not to be outdone, Alexis Forster went home with a whopping 23 rose garlands from sport horse, dressage, equitation, and hunter over fences!

Whether exhibitors were leaving with roses, ribbons, or empty handed, the gratitude and sportsmanship really shone through with everyone being very congratulatory toward their fellow competitors and, most importantly, kind and gracious to their equine partners. ere were many pets and smiles at the out gates for a job well done. While achieving a rose garland is something to be celebrated and proud of, the accomplishment of getting to nationals and competing in the rst place is an impressive feat in and of itself!

ere were also a lot of special classes that make coming to the Youth and Mid Summer Nationals show worthwhile. e Arabian Hunter Pleasure Association puts on an amateur purebred and Half-Arabian pleasure class open to kids and adults that includes a stand-up portion of the class where the horses are untacked and judged on conformation. Similarly, the Arabian Western Pleasure Association hosts a maturity where amateurs show and stand up their junior western horses. At U.S. Nationals, the AHPA and AWPA classes are ridden by professionals, so it is extra special to be able to compete for the chance to win one of these prestigious classes on the national level as an amateur. e AHPA also puts on two hunt seat equation classes for the youth to show in the main arena, as most equitation classes happen in the Specialty Arena. is year, the 18 & Under class had 35 entries with Mckenna Bein taking the top spot, while Lyla Diver won the walk/trot class.

Even though this show now has classes for everyone, the youth are still at the forefront of who this show is for. It’s such a special summer tradition to see kids achieve their dreams with their horses, whether it’s a clean ride or a rose blanket. OKC really stepped it up with the new arena and making accommodations while the facility is navigating the in-between stages, and the show sta continues to put on a wonderfully run show thanks to their endless dedication to the Arabian horse.

As this year’s summer nears its end, it’s time to re ect on a great season and look forward to next year’s Youth Nationals, where strengthening our bonds with our horses and reconnecting with horse show friends is the highlight of the year for many. It’s also a great opportunity to witness incredible young talent that will shape the future of the Arabian breed. eir dedication as the next generation of Arabian horse owners and spokespeople ensures the breed is in great hands!

Cool Kids A Moment Of Need Becomes A Lifetime Memory For Many

Showing horses sometimes seems like all glitz, glam, and bright lights, but the reality is that being part of this industry has the power to teach kids resilience, humility, and grace. If brought up through this sport from a young age, they have the potential to learn these life skills much earlier than their peers. Competing at the national level can send people through the highest of highs and lowest of lows in the matter of minutes.

10-year-old Maddix Andrews experienced all these feelings this year at her rst Youth Nationals. When her beloved Ali Tahrir TS (“Troy”), who is generously shared with her by Aisha Gardner, was unable to attend the show at the last minute due to health concerns, she was not only worried about her teammate, but also without a ride.

Travis (Maddix’s mom) says that Maddix has always known the horse’s health comes as the priority. So, although she was disappointed about missing out on her rst nationals, there was no hesitation in doing what was best for Troy.

Her mom was encouraged by Caralyn Schroter (among others) to share their dilemma on social media in hopes of nding another mount for Maddix. ere was an overwhelming response from trainers, horse owners, and fellow exhibitors. Ultimately, she was o ered the National Champion Half-Arabian gelding e Cool Kid SF (“Ace”) by Shamrock Farms.

“ e outpouring support from the Arabian horse community has been nothing short of incredible,” Travis says. “I am truly grateful to be part of such a passionate and caring group. e friendships we build and the experiences we share are among the greatest joys in life.”

Maddix got just two lessons on Ace before their class. He was actively showing the entire week with trainer Joe Reser and owner Leslie Doran Sommer. So, they were very grateful that Maddix got some time to familiarize herself with him.

With all the anticipation and minimal preparation, the screams from the crowd were almost deafening and Maddix and e Cool Kid SF were named national champions of the HA/AA Western Seat Equitation Walk/Jog 10 & Under. It felt like the whole fairgrounds and everyone watching from home was cheering Maddix on in this moment. For so many reasons, many screams and happy tears were had in this moment, least of which being that this was Maddix’s rst nationals and Ace’s rst walk/jog class!

Not many horses have the temperament to be shown open and in walk/jog at the same show, let alone to be unanimous national champions in both classes. Ace went national champion in the HA/AA Western Pleasure Open with trainer Joe Reser on day one of the horse show, earned top ten with Leslie, and closed his week out with this exciting victory.

“I am so grateful they took a leap of faith to lend me their beautiful, talented horse” Maddix shares in gratitude to Shamrock Farms. “I want to say to them ‘thank you so, so much; I had an amazing time riding your special boy. I’ll never forget my rst National Championship that was made possible by you!’”

e feelings of excitement and pride were very mutual in this group.

“ My favorite moment of the week was seeing Maddix smile when they called her number as champion,” Leslie Doran Sommer says. “ ey are wonderful people who I did not know before this. I feel lucky to have had the pleasure of getting to know them.”

Troy’s story sadly did not end with the same excitement, as his condition declined throughout the horse show. He has gone on to his forever green pastures. Travis said that having Ace to look forward to helped Maddix work through the complex emotions she was having during Youth Nationals. For all sorts of reasons, her rst Youth Nationals will be memorable – showing here from a young age and loving this sport has made her a stronger, better, and more generous person. n

Born To Ride Backed With A Great Support System Equals

Show Ring Success!

“It’s been such a gift,” she says when asked about being brought up with her family’s influence. “They’ve not only taught me about riding, but also the importance of sportsmanship, horsemanship, responsibility, and hard work. Horses have always been a big part of my life and being able to do what we love as a family makes it all even more meaningful. I couldn’t imagine it any other way.”

sabella (Bella) Sobral’s love for horses is nothing short of genetic. With multiple generations of horse lovers in her family, she doesn’t know anything besides “barn life” and all the life lessons that come with that. She is not even out of the 14 & under division yet and already understands the importance of not only doing this – and doing this well – but doing it alongside her family and friends. Bella’s grandma Laurie Long helps run Bay Area Equestrian Center (after a lengthy career as a trainer on her own); her dad Thiago runs Sobral Performance Horses (a Quarter Horse reining operation); her mom and aunt both grew up riding and are involved in various ways; and her little sister has joined her in the show pen too!

With this much access to horses, it’s no question that Bella shows and rides a variety of disciplines. Along with her impressive Arabian reputation and record, she also actively competes with her Quarter Horses. But, she notes that Arabians are special in so many ways, including the fact that “they give so much more than what is asked of them.”

Another thing that helps the Arabian horses and industry stand out to her are the friendships she makes with her barn mates and fellow competitors. When asked what her favorite part of Youth Nationals was (besides showing, of course), she answers easily, “definitely the friendships.” This is such a consistent feeling among many youth competitors for generations – like the one her mom and sister grew up in, the ones of today, and hopefully the ones to come. She adds, “the memories made outside of the arena are just as special as the ones made in it.”

Bella made lots of wonderful memories in the arena this year – gathering six championships, three reserve championships and two top tens. She said she would love to relive being named champion and reserve in the VRH Ranch Trail class because of how it got her adrenaline pumping. She had 10 classes with patterns at the recent show, which could be intimidating to most people, but gives great advice about pattern work and how to keep it all straight.

“I break the pattern down into sections and focus on riding one section of the pattern at a time instead of the whole pattern all at once,” she shares. “I also repeat the pattern out loud or draw it with my finger right before I go in – it helps it stick.”

Bella also talks a lot about how much the support of the Bay Area Equestrian barn family means to her, explaining that they meet wins with “cheers and high fives” and disappointing rides with “a hug and words of encouragement.”

With as many opportunities and victories she has, it is so heartening to see that she gets the “big picture” of what this is all about. Bella wants to thank “my family, trainers, barn family, and, of course, my horses.” Everyone on this list has a reason to be grateful and proud as well, for the role they play in this young rider’s life.

She says that “[she] wouldn’t trade my time with my horses or these experiences for anything,” which is an exciting signal that the Arabian horse community has many years ahead of us to cheer on this raised-in-a-barn kind of kid. n

There Is No I In TEAM But EA Is At The Center

“I want to make sure they love the ride more than the ribbon,” Tamara Collins-Grinton (Tammy) shares about her philosophy in preparing capable and competitive youth riders. Her barn, Earthquake Arabians, had a very successful Youth and Mid Summer Nationals – accumulating six national championships, six reserve national championships, and 35 top ten awards. She is extremely proud of her riders, but not just for the ribbons that they won. Although, in her own words, “there was nothing I wanted more than to hang a drape and put a ribbon up on it. at little horse girl inside has never changed.”

By design, the Earthquake Arabians barn feels like one big family. She wants everyone to feel and show equal support. She accomplishes this in many ways, like encouraging parents to show up for other kid’s classes with the same excitement as their own. ankfully, because of the culture she has created and modeled, this comes naturally. ey bond in big, exciting moments, and in small ones nobody would know about otherwise, like their themed rides and sleepovers in the barn.

With such an impressive count of ribbons, you might think that Tammy’s standout moment from Youth Nationals would be one involving a red rose or trophy, but instead it was a go-ahead ribbon from earlier in the week. In managing such a packed schedule and 16 riders, the team missed a class on their schedule, leading to a worthwhile panic.

“It took the e ort of every sta member and rider (and a full sprint from Kristi Stewart) to make the gate, but we made it happen,” she shares. “ is was Ella Bayley’s rst nationals. It would have been easy to get rattled by this, but instead she took it in stride and earned her ribbon. is is the kind of grit I want all my riders to have.”

Something she is proud of that is relative to ribbons and recognition is that all her open horses also excel with either youth or amateur riders – or in special cases, both. At the most recent championship show, Damaggio was the national champion in the Half-Arabian Hunter Pleasure Walt/Trot and Hunter Pleasure AATR Select with Logan Grinton and Karen Steinberg, respectively, along with being top ten in the Hunter Pleasure Open with Tammy.

Tammy and Reinbow

e Earthquake team comes together when it matters most. At this year’s nationals her team was bigger than before, in terms of competitors and help. As hinted at above, Kristi Stewart, along with Debbie Price, joined the force this year to support their friend.

“Both ladies are incredibly accomplished women themselves, which meant they needed to put their lives on hold to come help me,” she re ects. “I was incredibly honored that they felt like I was good enough to come and help.”

Another tradition of Earthquake Arabians is to have a theme or motto for each big show. is year’s was “tEAm” – incredibly tting for the moments that meant the most for their leader.

“I would never ask someone to do something that I wouldn’t do myself,” she says. “I’m a get-your- hands-dirty kind of girl.I work as hard as anyone.”

Something else that Tammy is possibly most proud of is the fact that 14 of her 16 riders at Youth Nationals started as young children in her lesson program. In an industry that is struggling to nd new people, those numbers speak for themselves. Her program (of all Arabians, by the way) excels through word-of-mouth and by being involved in the community through things like hosting birthday parties. Next, they are preparing for the IEA (Interscholastic Equestrian Association) season. is is another chance to introduce the equestrian sport to people in accessible, a ordable, and fun ways.

Now that the thrill of the show has settled, her pride and sense of accomplishment is still growing. And not only because of the ribbons, photos, and memories signaling a job well done, but because she has a tEAm of people supporting her and those she cares about most. n
