THE ALTERNATIVE APPROACH
Solutions To Minimise The Use Of Chlorine
Whether it’s through the use of salt chlorinators, UV, Ozone or other systems, when it comes to the treatment of swimming pool and spa water, there’s now a number of tried and tested non-chemical based, low and no chlorine solutions on offer. With options often providing a gentler wet leisure environment for owners and users, it’s easy to see why they are increasingly popular. This issue, we take a closer look at what’s available this year By Jon Wadeson

ollowing years of feedback from users, owners and operators spanning both the domestic and commercial wet leisure sectors, industry innovators were tasked with producing safe, dependable and effective disinfection solutions that don’t rely on large doses of chlorine for the sanitisation of water. As a result of this challenge, there is now a wide range of treatments available which do exactly that, with UV systems and salt chlorinators leading the pack of the many alternatives that are on offer. Lowering chlorine use in wet leisure settings, and in some cases, removing it completely, has been high on the agenda for many within both private and public environments and it provides a welcome answer for indoor pools to help eradicate the unwelcome odours we all too often associate with water that’s been treated with the chemical. Of course, chlorine will always have its place in the sanitation of pool and spa water, but reducing levels and reliance upon it or replacing it completely provides some much appreciated benefits. With a wide range of solutions and systems on offer, we take a look at just some of the options that are available.
AQUASERVICE’S VERSATILE UV SYSTEM IS SUITABLE FOR ALL POOL TYPES According to Norwegian manufacturer Aquaservice, their AquaUV Pool Line UV System (AQS-PL UV for short) is the most
versatile swimming pool UV system on the market. It’s designed to treat all types of pool usage, from heavy use children’s swimming pools to low use diving or private pools. Of course, each type of usage requires a different type of UV set up – no one type of UV system will fit all swimming pool usage and requirements – and systems are offered with flow rates ranging from 6m3/h to 580m3/h and the total maximum lamp power output spanning 0.4kW to 8.4kW. For ease of installation, connections can be amended to suit pipework and in addition, having the ability to supply bespoke options when required, makes it one of the most unique swimming pool UV systems available in the market. These medium pressure UV lamp systems offer a minimum lamp life of 10,000 hours, and as with the company’s Pool Line filters, they have been designed to comply with NSF 50 standard. Other features of the AQS-PL UV systems include: • Corrosion Resistant Epoxy Coating • Power Stepping • Manual or Automatic wiper • BUS connection option • Temperature Switch or Sensor. AQS-PL UV systems emit polychromatic UV radiation. The multiple wavelengths in the medium pressure UV lamps destroy the molecular bonds of combined chlorine/ chloramine compounds. Therefore, UV removal of chloramines is a non-chemical and reliable method to control combined chlorine in swimming pools. In addition, each system is sized and designed to achieve a minimum of a 99.9% reduction of cryptosporidium, therefore guaranteeing safe bathing for all with no risk of chlorine resistant organisms surviving in the water.

partnership network across the world. Here in the UK, their partner is AstralPool who exclusively distribute the innovative and environmentally friendly solutions which are based on UV-C, Ozone and AOP technology. Each one is ecological and an automatic process that requires minimal addition of chemicals to the pool. This guarantees well-being and bathing comfort by reducing irritation. For the residential market, BIO-UV has developed and launched the innovative concept, O’Clear. Easy to install and compatible with all types of pools, it is a unique water treatment system that guarantees a perfectly disinfected pool without the addition of chemicals. The water circulates inside a reactor where the UV-C, associated with O’Clear’s exclusive electrodes, eradicates all microorganisms and thus ensures flawless results with only 0.5g/litre of salt.
SIMPLE TO INSTALL AND USE – THE POOL PILOT DIGITAL NANO+ US-based AutoPilot has been a leading swimming pool salt chlorine generator manufacturer since 1976, with one of their most popular systems being the Pool Pilot Digital Nano+. Available exclusively in the UK from Certikin, the Nano+ is both simple to install and use. Its features include microprocessor controls with a digital read out of pool water temperature, current salt level, purifier production level and more. It is also intuitive to let you know how much salt to add should it run low. Autopilot’s patented manifold is included as standard and is designed to control the flow rate delivered to the cell of the chlorinator whilst guaranteeing
