BLOCK GRAIN BELT TO HOLD MEETING MAY 15

Grain Belt Express Clean Line, a private for-profit company from Houston, Texas, is proposing to run a high voltage direct current transmission line through your county and, quite possibly, through your land and near your home! They will try to do this by becoming a public utility in Missouri and therefore having the power of EMINENT DOMAIN. The group, Block Grain Belt Express MO, is opposed to this project anywhere in the state of Missouri and they are having action meetings to let you know what everyone can all do together to fight this. We can STOP this! If this is important to you and you want control of what happens to you and your property, attend this ACTION meeting! The meeting will be at Paris High School, 25686 Business Hwy. 24, Paris, Mo., on Thursday, May 15, at 7 p.m., at the Ag Building.

ARMSE TO MEET FRIDAY, MAY 16

The Hannibal Mark Twain Chapter of the Association of Retired Missouri State Employees (ARMSE) will meet on Friday, May 16, beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the Nutrition Center, 219 South Tenth Street in Hannibal. Their program will be a demonstration by SJ Pottery from Bethel, who do Redware and Mocha and Salt Glazed Stoneware. All current and retired State employees are encouraged to attend. The Madison 2014 Graduation, on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 11, at 2 p.m., began with the prelude of “Hey Brother” by Avicci. The graduates entered the gymnasium to the sweet strains of Pomp and Circumstance. Superintendent Lesa Rapert welcomed the assembled graduates, friends, guests and family. The speakers, chosen by the class, were former teacher Leann KramerBrown and teacher Shannon GreenKingery. “Don’t stop until you achieve your goals,” said Kramer-Brown. “Make wise choices but never be afraid to make mistakes.” “Plan for your future but remember to be flexible,” added Kramer-Brown. “It is time to set your goals and attempt to

achieve them.” “Continue to be persistent,” noted Kramer-Brown. “As you grow your plan for the future will grow with you.” “Be a loyal and steadfast friend,” said Green-Kingery. “Be honest with yourself and others.” “If your are honest with yourself then what people see is what they get,” explained Green-Kingery. “Do not limit your possibilities. Learning should be a lifelong endeavor. Learn to roll with the punches.” Principal Trisch Vessar and Superintendent Rapert presented the Eighth Graders with their diplomas. 8th Grade Graduates included Trey Allen Brammer, Molly Alyse Clampitt, Jared Elijah Cain Clay, Emily Michelle Gibler, Danielle Marie Herrin, Judy Irene Hornbarger, Skyler Brennon

The Madison West Monroe Volunteer Fire Department attended the 2014 Firefighter Association of Missouri Convention at Festus, on May 2, 3 and 4. It had been 60 years since the Convention was last held in Festus. There were over 800 people registered for the Convention. It started Friday night with a mixer where old and new friends could get back together. Saturday morning started with the five contests: two person

hose coupling, replace a section of hose, extending a line, water barrel fight and bucket brigade. Madison’s team was: Chase Barnes, Chase Breid, Christine Love, Dale Ransdell, and Chad Wolfe. They brought home the third place trophy in the Water Barrel Fight. That evening a banquet was held to pass out trophies from the contest, awards for the year, and a guest speaker. It is always amazing to realize that Madison

Love, Maya Isabelle McGuire, Ashlyn Layne Peterson, Ashley Lynn Redenbaugh, Staci Nicole Stokes, Dylan Matthew Taylor, Donald Austin Thomas and Taylor Lynn Young. Counselor Jessica David presented the class with their scholarships and awards (look for awards listed in next week’s Monroe County Appeal). “Thank you to all our teachers and

Graduation... Awards... The Madison Graduation was amazing. The speakers, the awards, the speeches, the music - all went very well. Then tonight I attended the Paris R-II Awards Assembly and it was amazing as students received award after award and scholarship after scholarship. Our students are truly amazing and this is in no small part to you - the residents of our county. Give yourself a hand - you are amazing (see a theme here?) Without employers like jacs, Jonesy’s, 15 Diner, TPNB and Hickman’s IGA and any other business in the county that employs our youth and helps them establish their business work ethic - we wouldn’t have such successful students. We would not have the successful students that we have if not for the amazing leaders of the county stepping up and helping mentor our youth. Local clubs like Rotary and Lions help guide and direct our youth to ward positive activities and decisions. We would not have the successful students we have

in this county without some amazing parents. I see dedicated parents time and time again as I visit numerous activities. They are there for their children and students at the drop of a hat. We would not have the successful students we have in the county without an amazing support system. Parents, grandparents, friends, family - they all contribute to our total package of our students. A lady who is going to run for President once said, “it takes a village to raise a child.’ I counter that it does not take a village - it takes amazing people, a positive attitude and dedication to making those students succeed - to make it happen. Like here in Monroe County! Have an amazing week!

Lately, I have been thinking a lot about how this world has changed especially when dealing with our younger generation. I do not want to be a Debbie Downer but I feel we are missing it in a lot of areas. Last week, I was looking at my past article trying to categorize them when I came across one that I had written several years ago but couldn’t believe how much it was saying what my heart was feeling. I want to share it with you again and then ask you the readers if you feel like there are some areas we are missing it? I really want to encourage you to share your thoughts. Please email me at lisa.talton@yahoo.com Where Is Our Foundation? Last weekend my husband and I went to visit some friends. They live in a beautiful small town that has a lot of the older style Victorian homes (their home included). I was so

excited to take my walk the next morning after getting there because I was anxious about getting to look at all the different homes. As I was walking the next morning I noticed how the homes were various sizes, colors, textures, and designs but they all had one similarity threading them together. They were all older homes that had been around for many years and had solid strong foundations. This got me thinking about how these homes were like our families, our churches, our communities and America today. Most of our families, churches and communities were founded on God just like our country was founded on God.

windows might have been needed or color schemes changed but again the most important thing stayed the same-the foundation. The owners of these older homes merged their ideas and visions with the ideas and visions of the previous owners all the while keeping the important things the same-structure and foundation. Can we say the same about our families, our churches, our communities and America? Have we instead of building upon our strong foundation (God) got rid of the old foundation all together? Have we built new homes with foundations that are made up of the ever changing beliefs and principles of this world? Have we let all the hard work, good teachings, and values of the ones who have walked before us lay by the way side? Yes, there might have been some things that needed updating like the carpet or maybe the wall paper was out of style. New windows might have been needed or color schemes changed but again the most important thing stayed the same-the foundation. Continued to page 5

MONROE COUNTY HISTORY

As Time Goes By

MY TURN

All yesteryears are reprinted in the exact text of the original issue

The New Tax Cuts Legislators last week voted to override Governor Jay Nixon’s veto of a tax cut bill sponsored by majority Republicans. The bill could cost 620 million per year in lost state revenue. No changes would take effect until 2017 and the cuts would not be in full effect until tax year 2022. The cut is a reduction of Missouri’s top individual tax rate from 6 per cent to 5.5 per cent. It also phases in a new 25 per cent deduction for business income reported on individual returns. All of this is dependent on state revenue growing by at least 150 million above their highest amount for the previous three years. This is no sure bet based on current figures. The reality of the cuts would be that a married couple with two kids earning $44,000 would see a cut of $32.46. The same couple at $100,000 income a $266.71 cut. The business owner with two kids and $500,000 in non wage income would get a $9,141 cut. Two thirds of Missouri’s tax paying citizens make less than $50,000 and will see very little benefit. The 11.5 per cent that pay 60 per of the tax are those with adjusted gross incomes of $100,000 or more and they will benefit from the cuts. Big tax cuts do not always translate into job growth or money saved being used in business increases that result in a business boom. Of six states that cut taxes in the early 2,000’s three did better than average and three worse. The pro argument remains that a lower rate will give people incentive to work and invest capital

He was our strong solid foundation that we could build upon. The owners of these older homes took the time and energy to restore those things that needed restoring without dstroying the foundation. The people who have walked before us in our families, our churches and our communities also took their time and energy to make needed changes but did not get rid of the foundation. The owners of these older homes did not destroy all of the work that was done by the previous owners. Maybe they kept the wood work because even though it was old it was still in good condition and served its purpose. They might have been fascinated with the intricate handi work and admired the amount of time they could tell someone before them put into it so they kept it the same. They felt there was no need of changing a good thing. They knew that some things are better kept the same. Yes, there might have been some things that needed updating like the carpet or maybe the wall paper was out of style. New

in Missouri. The cons are looking at it being much harder to fund schools and other public services and harm growth. Our local Paris R-II Superintendent Chris Johnson’s take on the proposed reduction and our local representative’s published defense of it in this paper is as follows: “There is no study, no proof and no guarantee that cutting taxes in the manner that they did will increase economic activity in Missouri and reducing the amount of revenue for the state by $620 million is going to make it more difficult to fund education. Already the state is under-funding the formula for education by approximately $600 million. Rural Missouri is the big loser when the state fails to fund the formula and transportation categories. When the legislature makes funding education a priority over failed tax credit programs, then we can believe they really care about the children in this state.” There is some good in the bill for the little guy. People under $20,000 in adjusted gross income get a $500 personal exemption. The bill also requires the state’s tax brackets to be updated each year to reflect inflation. Now we are at a top rate of $9,000 since 1931. There may be no wrong here in intention or goals. But there is plenty of room for mistakes and bad judgment. The sponsors and supporters of this legislation will all be termed out or tired out by the time it becomes fully effective. There will be no one left to take the credit or the blame.

The owners of these older homes merged their ideas and visions with the ideas and visions of the previous owners all the while keeping the important things the samestructure and foundation. Change is inevetable and can be a good thing. Most of us would not want to go back to days of outhouses instead of inside flushable toilets or having to wash our clothes on a wash board by hand instead of having washers. People before us have invented and created new things that make our lives easier. But there are some things that were taught or handed down from previous generations that do not need to change like using our manners or being respectful to everyone especially our elders. We would never have thought about saying a curse word around our parents. (at least not out loud) Now we see children being allowed to cuss out their parents and school teachers. Where has the respect gone? When we were young the child was not in charge but the parents were. Growing up our parents wanted us to wait until we got married before being intimate with someone but now some parents are putting their children on birth control while they are still in high school and sometimes even younger than that. We know that the previous generations were not perfect and they made their share of mistakes but they did keep God as their foundation so even if they got off track God was still in control. God knows we are going to mess up sometimes and go in the wrong direction but if we take the time and energy into putting our relationship with Him first, things will always work out. Hopefully we have seen the negative effects of taking God out of our lives, churches, schools and communities. Hopefully we will go back to our strong, solid foundation and start building upon it things that will prosper and give life. And through that our lives and our childrens lives and their children’s lives will be enriched and blessed.

Disability Insurance: AByGood Buy Nancy Baca, State Farm® Agent

Think you’re immune to accidents? According to the U.S. Social Security Administration, 20-year-old workers have a 1 in 4 chance of becoming disabled by age 67. In fact, the average American drawing Social Security disability benefits is 50 years old. The average Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is only $1,113 per month. Even while continuing to work part-time, is that enough to cover living expenses? For most of us, the answer is likely no. Myth: I Can Rely on Workers’ Comp Many people mistakenly think so. According to the Council for Disability Awareness, a small fraction of disabilities are covered by workers’ compensation insurance, and the benefits are often temporary. Similarly, qualifying for SSDI can be difficult, and approval can take months. What’s the Solution? For maximum protection, make sure you have both short-term and long-term disability insurance. Many employers offer shortterm coverage that will typically replace around 40 to 60 percent of your income for three to six months while recovering from a temporary disability. As the name implies, long-term coverage provides you with income during a lengthy or permanent disability. These benefits usually start three to six months after a person becomes disabled and can continue for a period of several years or even until age 70. For additional protection, consider augmenting this coverage with a personal policy. What Should You Look For in a Policy? Here are some considerations: “Disability” definition: You must be unable to perform your regular job, or any job? Onset of benefits: If your savings can cover several months of expenses, reduce monthly premiums with a longer waiting period. Partial benefits: These can provide you with some income if you can’t work full capacity. Cost-of-living adjustment (COLA): Adding a COLA option will increase benefits to keep pace with inflated living expenses. It pays to do your homework and talk with a professional before selecting the policy that best fits your needs and budget

Women of the bible included Eve, Marian, Rahab, Ruth, Naomi, Debra (the widow), Delilah, Hannah, Esther, Holda, (women who have always taught the word) Mary, the mother of Jesus, (praying for her son, the widow with her last mite, Mary (an evangelist), Martha ( who anointed Jesus’ feet), Lydia (a merchant), Tabitha, Phoebe (a deacon), Priscilla, Judia, Trifina, Lois, Eunice... Everyone is welcome to Adult Sunday School at 9:30, Junior Church at 10:30, and worship at 10:45 a.m. The monthly Bible verse is: God’s Spirit, who is in you, is greater than the devil, who is in the world. 1 John 4:4. The thought for the week is: God’s promises are like the stars: the darker the night, the brighter they shine.

On May 11, church services began with the pastor giving an opening prayer. Regular church meetings of the week were announced and all were encouraged to attend. Announcements included: next Sunday there will be a True Love Waits ceremony during morning service, the Cowboy Church will host a Gospel sing at the barn on June 14, Mothers are to pick up gifts at the end of the service, and there is a Cardinal’s game we have tickets for on June 18. The message this week was titled ‘God’s Way for Women’ and came from Titus 2:1-5. We honor our Mothers today and the best way for a church to honor Mothers is to lift up God’s truths for your benefit. Satan has been working hard to destroy the family. Most every social sin is aimed at weakening the family. The Good News is that God has a plan and if we read the plan and put it into place in our lives Satan can have no victory over us. Christian women are to ‘teach younger women’. Young women’s primary learning comes from other women, not the pulpit. One-on-one discipleship is needed to teach how to be good wives, mothers, and homemakers. This is the responsibility of aged women of the church who have been through this. We cannot let the next generation be shaped by Oprah and a lost society who teaches divorce is easy and abortion is an answer to a problem. Christian women must teach the next generation that they have the right to keep commitments they made before God. To teach is not love that sustains commitment but commitment sustains love. We need women who teach that they have been through many problems and the family works because of commitment. Women are to teach these things so God’s Word is not blasphemed. Every time a church family falls apart it is a contradiction of what is taught by God. The world may not listen to what we say but hey watch what we do. Women are to live the word of God, to live a life of holiness. This is the best teacher to younger women. Life is too short to be a gossiper or a drunk; instead God calls women to be serious minded with good judgment in the Lord. Women are to be full of love for their husband and children. This calls for a life that is chaste with pre-marital purity and post-marital fidelity. Homemaking is a God-ordained occupation and while some women work outside the home it should be for needs and not greed’s. Working for a higher standard of living is not worth the trade-off to your home. There is no higher calling than to be a wife and mother. 1 Timothy 5:14 says ‘I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house..’ The home is under attack from many different angles and needs to be defended. God has directions and the church needs to know them and live them.

On Mother’s Day, May 11th, Sally Blakemore, pianist, opened services with the prelude. In Reverend Holmes’ absence, all were welcomed by Gary Wilson, Board Chairman. Pete and Margaret Olney shared the joy of having family members join them for worship. Pete also shared his anticipation of going on the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. during the upcoming week. Other special guests were Rob, Suzi and Abbi Carter. The congregation stood to sing the opening hymn, “Faith of Our Mothers.” The prayer hymn, “Are Ye Able? Said the Master” was then sung. Unison recital of the Lord’s Prayer followed. Happy birthday was sung to: Michael Blades, Beckett Bollinger, in memory of Nora Smith and for Berna Kotsenburg’s brother, Dennis Thrasher, her grandson, Gus Griffith, and granddaughter, Haley. Prayer concerns were expressed for: Jerry Ragsdale, Jerry Koch and for those affected by the storms on Saturday evening. Praises were given for Mary McMorris’ continued recovery from recent surgery. The communion hymn, “According to Thy Gracious Word” was sung. Phil Blakemore and Guy Callison served as elders and went forward with deacons, Gerald Roberts and Johnny Ragsdale. The hymn of invitation and dedication, “God Will Take Care of You” was sung. The “Spirit Song” closed morning worship. The monthly congregational meeting was called to order. Minutes of the April meeting were approved as read by Acting Secretary, Carole Roberts. Appreciation was expressed to Sally and Phil Blakemore for shingles to repair the church roof and to Jim Riechmann for completing the roof repair. Those who are taken for granted in doing various needed duties around the church were recognized - Jane Akers, Guy Callison, Phil Blakemore, Sandy Callison, Gerald Roberts and Sally Blakemore. A brief discussion of dates for the political speaking ice cream supper, the church annual meeting and fall fundraiser followed. The meeting was adjourned on motion by Jerry Ragsdale, second by Pete Olney. A time for fellowship and to enjoy refreshments was observed in the church basement until all departed to enjoy Mother’s Day. Services are held each Sunday at the Holliday Christian Church with worship beginning at 9:30 followed by Bible Study at 10:30. All are welcomed and encouraged to attend

COMMUNITY NEWS

Former FFA President Jaelyn Bergmann takes part in Officer Parnership visits Greetings from FaithWalk Ministries – Bishop Harold G. Long, Pastor Morning worship service began at 10:30 a.m. “Break Every Chain” – sung by FaithWalk Prayer-led by Elder Helen Fugate Scripture-read by Elder Maurice Berry “Souled Out” – sung by FaithWalk Choir Offering (Seed Planting) was directed by Bro. John Fonville. Our Vision and Mission Statements were read in unison, declaring that FaithWalk Ministry’s constant goal is the work of, “Building and Sustaining Strong Communities by Breaking the Cycle of Addictive Failures.” “Better”-Praise Dance by Augustine Hardin Bishop Long’s message was entitled, “Jesus Has Something To Say!” St. Luke 7:36-40, 47-48 Everybody, sometime or another has something to say. From what we think we have to say or what we say, how much of it, if any, has any real meaning, or purpose, or are we just saying something to be saying it? When something has to be said, it comes from a place in us that is triggered by something outside of us. The Bible tells us in Proverbs 12:18- “There is one who speaks like the piercing of a sword: but the tongue of the wise promotes health.” This is what Jesus Christ did, in St. Luke 7:36-40, 47-48, as He spoke to the woman’s critics, because of their opinion about what the she had done to Jesus and because of her status in the community. This woman, out of her heart of brokenness, and life of bondage to her lifestyle, realized that she needed to hear what Jesus had to say concerning life from this point on, and not what others had been saying and what they were saying concerning her past. It only mattered what Jesus had to say. St. Luke 7:47 –“Therefore I say to you, her sins which are many are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven the same loves little. 48 - Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” We need Jesus Christ to speak wisdom to us, for that is our health. Come and worship with us! culture and agribusiness. During the visits, officers learn from experienced agriculture professionals about the challenges facing the industry. “Monsanto and FFA have been longtime partners in the effort to educate youth and support the next generation of ag leaders,” said Elizabeth Vancil, Monsanto customer advocacy outreach manager. “Hosting three FFA officers was a wonderful experience for our team at Monsanto, and we are happy to support

these agricultural ambassadors.” For over half a century, Monsanto has been a proud supporter and sponsor of FFA, making a positive difference in the lives of students, with over $1 million donated to the National FFA Foundation. Funding is utilized on the local and national levels to enhance the agricultural education opportunities available to students. Monsanto and FFA recently partnered to create a new program for students interested

in furthering their studies in agriculture, called America’s Farmers Grow Ag Leaders. The scholarship, presented by Monsanto in connection with the National FFA Organization, offers students the chance to earn a $1,500 college scholarship. Students do not need to be FFA members to participate in America’s Farmers Grow Ag Leaders. The program will be available in Missouri later this year, in November 2014.
