During the last period of the Western Roman Empire, Camporotondo was a legally independent agricultural centre. After the fall of the Empire in 1147, in the early Middle Ages, it was turned into a Castrum (small town surrounded by walls) and into a stronghold for Town hall: the defence of San Ginesio by Phone: +39 0733.907153 the Da Varano family. WORTH VISITING Worth visiting are the restored ancient castle walls and the 14th WHERE TO STAY century “Portarella”, the meHOTELS dieval town gate. The Church of St. Maria di Garufo preserves an important fresco representing the Madonna Enthroned with Child, dating from the 15th

century, attributed to Paolo da Visso. The Town Hall has been recently restored. SOMETHING MORE TO DISCOVER The name Camporotondo seems to derive from the name of a medieval landlord or, according to a more likely option the name recalls the circular shape of the village. The specification of “Fiastrone”, referring to the stream that runs across the town, was added in 1863. WORTH TASTING Local specialities are: virgin olive oil, vincotto (literally cooked wine), wine Rosso Piceno doc., salami, cheese, pasta (tagliatelle, cappelletti and the famous “vincisgrassi”), lamb, Christmas and Easter pizzas, fruits of the forest. SOMETHING TO DO The following sport facilities are available: a soccer field and a multi-purpose gym (where you can play tennis, volleyball and football). WORTH DISCOVERING Camporotondo belongs to the district of the Monti Azzurri Mountain Community (Comunità Montana dei Monti Azzurri). From the town walls, towards north-west, you can enjoy a wonderful panorama from the Fiastrone Valley with its unique and beautiful land-

scape. The town is of great naturalistic interest; hiking or mountain-bike lovers will enjoy their stay, indeed.
