How’s my driving?

AWARE implements ‘Safety First’ program By Mike Shea Corporate Transportation Coordinator

ffective Jan. 1, AWARE initiated a driver monitoring program called “How’s My Driving,” administered by SafetyFirst Systems located in Parsippany, N.J. Implementation of the program, was done at no cost to AWARE and with the knowledge of and encouragement from AWARE’s insurance carrier, Payne Financial Group. As noted in a memo from Larry Noonan, CEO, “driving is the single most dangerous activity our employees engage in on a daily basis.” He goes on to stress the fact that “it is AWARE’s responsibility to provide all of our employees with the safest working environment as well as making every effort to protect our consumers and other motorists.” It is a well-known fact that driver monitoring programs such as the one implemented by AWARE, have been proven to reduce motor vehicle accidents.

Basically, the way the program works is each AWARE vehicle has a decal placed on it which contains a specific identifier number along with an 888 number. The number is linked to a SafetyFirst call center where an individual may call and submit a “Motorist Observation Report” on an AWARE vehicle if it is observed driving in an unsafe manner. Examples of such observations would include driving too fast for conditions, tailgating, improper lane change or running a stop sign or red light. Once a call is received, the call center will take the information which will typically include the vehicle identifier number, location, time and details of the incident. The information is then forwarded to AWARE. Once received, the Human Resources Department will determine the identity of the driver and notify the appropriate supervisor who will be responsible for meeting with the employee to discuss the incident.
