The secondary education providers listed in this directory are all Code of Practice signatories (see page 10: Care of international students), which means they have staff to assist their students with all aspects of New Zealand life. The information in this directory was correct at the time of printing. Information on courses and costs change over time, and updated editions of this directory are published every 12 months. The course options and academic programmes outlined in this directory have been confirmed by the institution as available to international students at

the time of printing. However, to avoid disappointment, enquiries should be made to authorised placement agencies or directly to the institution concerned. In addition, if you choose to study in a New Zealand institution, it is important to check course approval status with NZQA and cost details with the institution at the time of application. Our schools offer a safe learning environment and a deep and rich education experience. Schools use the world-leading New Zealand Curriculum. The National Certificate of Educational Achievement programme (NCEA) is New Zealand’s main national qualification for secondary students in Years 11–13, and some secondary schools provide other qualification options, such as the Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) or International Baccalaureate (IB). A New Zealand education will give you an international advantage because qualifications gained here are recognised all around the world. All the institutions listed in this guide are approved and have signed the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students in New Zealand. This means that each institution must provide adequate care for students, both inside and outside the classroom. Each institution can also give you details about how studying with them in New Zealand can work for you.

About New Zealand New Zealand is geographically about the same size as Japan or Great Britain. The countryside is unique and spectacular, from rolling green hills to golden sand beaches, to barren volcanic plateaux and lush rainforests, all within a few hours’ drive.

ew Zealand has just 4.7 million people, known affectionately as ‘Kiwis’, who are easy-going, casual, warm and welcoming to their neighbours and those who travel to experience all that is New Zealand. New Zealanders travel overseas a lot (when you live 2,000 kilometres from your nearest neighbouring country, you have to travel a bit!) and this means they are well used to a range of cultures. New Zealand itself is a multicultural nation, with a fusion of Māori (the original settlers in New Zealand), Pacific Island, European, and Asian people combining to make a vibrant and colourful society. The official languages are English, te reo Māori, and New Zealand Sign Language, although many other languages are spoken by individual cultural groups. The climate in New Zealand is temperate, with relatively mild, wet winters, with temperatures between 8 and 15°C, and warm, dry summers where temperatures range from 20 to 30°C. The summer months are December, January, and February and the winter months are June, July, and August. The North Island is warmer than the South Island; however, the Southern Alps have world-renowned ski fields. The cost of living in New Zealand is similar to Australia and less than in Britain. The list below gives an idea of the costs of some well-known items. Many shops and services in New Zealand offer a student discount and some institutions offer student cards that entitle their students to discounts on and off campus. Home-based internet (at your institution, it will usually be free!): plans from $75 per month. Mobile plan: from $20 per month. Meal out: from $16. Movie at the cinema: $13–$17. Free local phone calls from a home phone. Cup of coffee at a café: $5. Domestic air travel: $49–$200. Shops in New Zealand are open from Monday through to Saturday, with a large number also open on Sundays. Shopping hours are from 8.30am to 5.30pm with a ‘late night’ shopping night once or twice a week, where shops may be open until 9pm. On Saturday and Sunday, shopping hours vary, from opening later and closing earlier, to those that close at 1pm.

What international students say about New Zealand* 94% of international students studying at secondary and composite schools (aged 16 years and over) in New Zealand were either happy or very happy with their experience. 94% were happy with the overall support that they had received from their school. 89% of students were happy with the choice of subjects on offer at their school. 76% of international students would recommend their school to others thinking of applying. Opportunity to improve language skills by studying in an English speaking country (96%), feeling safe (94%) and how people would behave towards them as an international student (90%) were important when selecting which school to study in. These were followed by academic reputation of the school (87%) and opportunity to go to a university or other school in another country (85%). 92% were happy or very happy with their living arrangements in New Zealand. Students were happy or very happy with: opportunities to make friends from other countries (95%); relationships with their homestay families (94%); help from homestay families on issues other than study (93%); quality of accommodation (92%); and quality of food (91%). 40% were looking to stay in New Zealand when they finished their studies and 42% planned to return to their home countries. *Source: published in February 2013 i-graduate survey (on behalf of New Zealand Ministry of Education) of 1,871 international students in New Zealand aged 16 years and over.

The secondary school academic year The secondary school academic year is a four-term system following the calendar year and running from late January or early February to mid-December. About New Zealand secondary schools N

ew Zealand secondary schools (often referred to as high schools, grammar schools, or colleges) are almost all state-owned, being funded by the New Zealand Government. However, a small percentage of schools are private (independent) or integrated (half statefunded). Private schools operate outside the state system and are often affiliated to a religion. Similarly, integrated schools have their own ‘special character’, often relating to religion. Many private and integrated schools offer a history of traditional education and principles. International students are accepted at both state and private schools, which work hard to offer a quality education to their students. Most New Zealand secondary schools are coeducational, but about 10 per cent are single gender boys’ or girls’ schools. To find

out about whether schools are coeducational or single gender in this directory, you need to check the information at the bottom of each school’s profile. New Zealand secondary schools offer a wide range of subjects. Schools set their own curriculum objectives within the national guidelines set out by the Ministry of Education, which are monitored by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA). All schools, whether they are private or state-owned, must follow these guidelines. Many international students enrol for senior studies in Years 11–13 (15 to 19 years of age) in preparation for tertiary studies in New Zealand or other English-speaking countries. The curriculum guidelines mean that students can move from secondary to tertiary study easily.

The New Zealand secondary education system is consistent across all schools, with entry requirements, courses, educational standards, and curriculum being similar and designed to prepare students for tertiary study and for life on a global scale. The international PISA study confirms that New Zealand's school system performs relatively well. PISA is the OECD Programme for International Student Assessment – an ongoing, three-yearly survey of the achievement levels of 15-yearold students carried out across all the major industrialised countries. New Zealand has historically ranked near the top across the range of student achievement. The New Zealand secondary education system also fits well within other education programmes throughout the world.

English language study In New Zealand, students are taught in an English-speaking environment. International students share classes with New Zealanders and are always encouraged to participate in discussion and all aspects of learning.

nternational students often enrol in English language courses to improve their English language skills prior to commencing secondary education in New Zealand. All English language providers in New Zealand are registered with NZQA. This ensures that the standards of tuition are high and that courses are well maintained and meet international standards. International students who enrol in English language courses are tested and placed in the right programme to suit their ability. Classes are small so that individual students receive as much support as they require. New Zealand uses modern teaching methods, including conversation classes and language laboratory work.

Some English language providers are registered as testing centres for international English language proficiency testing, such as the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The institution provides courses leading up to the test, then students can sit their proficiency test. Note: For entry, most New Zealand universities require an IELTS mark of 6.0 or better from international fee-paying students, as well as a good academic record. Most New Zealand secondary schools listed in this directory are accredited to teach English language courses suitable for international students. Some have English language institutions as part of their school.

Secondary education qualifications SECONDARY EDUCATION CURRICULUM

Students in Years 9 and 10 study a basic core of subjects – English, social studies, general science, mathematics, music, art and crafts, and physical education. A wide range of more specialist subjects are available from Years 11–13. Schools with an affiliation to a religion may also offer a compulsory religious course.

NATIONAL CERTIFICATE OF EDUCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT

The National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) programme is New Zealand’s main national qualification for secondary students in Years 11–13. In 2018 and 2019 the New Zealand Government carried out a major review of NCEA. Some changes to the way NCEA is delivered will be rolled out from 2020. There are three levels of NCEA certificate, depending on the difficulty of the standards achieved. At each level, students must achieve a certain number of credits to gain an NCEA certificate. Credits can be gained over more than one year. NCEA Level 1 is offered in Year 11, Level 2 in Year 12, and Level 3 (and 4 – Scholarship qualification) in Year 13. These three (or four) levels are the first steps of eight levels in the National Qualifications Framework. To complete each NCEA level, students must earn credits, which are achieved by meeting standards in their chosen subject areas. Some standards are assessed by external examinations; others are assessed by internal assessment (marks from course work throughout the year). Each subject has three achievement levels that can be gained: credit, merit and excellence. These are awarded depending on the student's individual quality and correctness of work. For a student to be awarded NCEA Level 1, they must achieve 80 credits. Of these, eight credits must be in literacy standards and eight credits in numeracy standards. For a student to be awarded NCEA Level 2, they must achieve 80 credits, of which a minimum of 60 credits are at Level 2 or above. For a student to be awarded NCEA Level 3, they must achieve 80 credits, of which 60 must be at Level 3 or above

and 20 at Level 2 or above. Students may also complete New Zealand Scholarship qualifications – essentially, NCEA Level 4. New Zealand has an international reputation as a provider of quality education. Education in New Zealand focuses on equipping students with skills and knowledge essential for both career and life on a global scale. The New Zealand Government works with officials worldwide to ensure qualifications are recognised. This provides an assurance to enrolling international students that whether you continue studying in New Zealand or move to another country’s education system, you will be able to credit your New Zealand qualification towards your future study. Some secondary schools provide other qualification options such as the Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) or International Baccalaureate (IB). The secondary schools profiled in this directory indicate whether they offer these. If no indication is made, generally that means that the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) is the qualification offered.

UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE

University Entrance (UE) is the minimum requirement to go to a New Zealand university. UE builds on the NCEA Level 3 certificate by requiring you to have 42 of your Level 3 credits in subjects that have been approved as preparation for university-level study. To qualify you will need: NCEA Level 3 fourteen Level 3 credits in each of three approved subjects slightly higher literacy and numeracy requirements. NCEA enables students to link their secondary education to their tertiary education, with all levels recognised by universities and other tertiary education providers around New Zealand. Secondary education as a pathway to further study Following secondary school, many international students choose to continue their education at tertiary level in New Zealand.

here are numerous educational opportunities at tertiary level. All qualifications are of a very high standard and are closely monitored by their governing body, which ensures that good standards are maintained. Immigration New Zealand will only grant student visas for courses accredited by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) or the sector body. Courses are available for academic, professional, and vocational studies at universities, institutes of technology and polytechnics, and private training establishments. In addition to these, there are the English language institutions, both private and those connected to New Zealand tertiary institutions. Options available for further study include:

BRIDGING COURSES AND FOUNDATION STUDIES

Many New Zealand tertiary institutions offer a certificate of university preparation, or foundation studies. If students leave school without the right NCEA Level 3 achievement standards, a bridging or foundation course can help them meet the entrance requirement of some degree pathways. Such courses may be offered as a summer school before the main academic year starts. Introductory courses may also be taught during the year, but this option can add an extra semester to their degrees or diploma programmes.

UNIVERSITIES

New Zealand universities are all research-based and stateowned. New Zealand universities offer courses from certificate level through to PhD. The academic year is from March to November. A July start date may be available for some courses. Summer semester courses (January to March) may also be available. All teacher training is undertaken through New Zealand universities, which makes it easy to undertake study in specific areas of education.

INSTITUTES OF TECHNOLOGY AND POLYTECHNICS

PRIVATE TRAINING ESTABLISHMENTS

New Zealand institutes of technology and polytechnics (ITPs) are state-owned. New Zealand ITPs offer courses that are equivalent in merit to those offered in New Zealand universities. ITPs offer courses from certificate level, with some offering full degree and postgraduate level studies. The academic year is from March to November. A July start date may be available for some courses. In 2019 the New Zealand Government conducted a major review of New Zealand’s vocational education sector. As a result, New Zealand’s 16 ITPs will continue to operate in the regions but will be brought together under one central institute.

There are a large number of private training establishments (PTEs) throughout New Zealand. Some PTEs run courses in a particular discipline, such as business or travel and tourism. All PTEs are required to be registered with NZQA. Most run on a similar timetable to state tertiary institutions.

Our international students are an important and valued part of our communities. New Zealand offers a safe learning environment with excellent study opportunities and caring support services for international students.

ew Zealand was the first country to set up a mandatory Code of Practice for all institutions enrolling international students to ensure that our students are well informed, safe, and properly cared for. The Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students establishes a framework for minimum standards, good practice procedures, and a complaints procedure for providers enrolling international students. The Code sets standards for education providers to ensure that: high professional standards are maintained the recruitment of international students is undertaken in an ethical and responsible manner information supplied to international students is comprehensive, accurate, and up to date

Accommodation options New Zealand institutions offering courses to international students must provide accommodation for students while they study. There are various types of accommodation available; the most common is homestay and hostel-style accommodation. Students over 18 years of age may choose to find their own accommodation in a private flat or house. 10 SECONDARY DIRECTORY 2019/20

HOMESTAY

Staying in homestay-style accommodation involves living with a New Zealand family, in a house, with your own room. Your host family will welcome and treat you as a member of their family. Host families are carefully selected in accordance with the Code of Practice. The institution must be subject to a vetting procedure to ensure the environment is safe and caring. Breakfast and dinner are provided. The cost of homestay accommodation starts at approximately $250 per week, plus a one-time administration fee.

HOSTELS

Many institutions have boarding hostels on-campus or nearby. Rooms are single or dormitory style, with all meals provided in cafeterias. Hostels are normally closed during the holidays and students who do not travel home can stay in homestay accommodation. Hostels are a good way for international students to meet people with the same interests. Costs of boarding hostels vary with each institution but may be between $200 and $280 per week.

PRIVATE RENTALS (HOUSE OR FLAT)

Students who are 18 years and older may be able to rent their own house or flat, or rent a room in a house/flat with other people. Students are required to pay for all utilities – electricity, telephone, and internet – and food, in addition to the cost of renting the room. ‘Flatting’ gives students much more independence, but of course, the institution is available for support. The cost to rent a room or flat varies significantly between cities and towns; usually it is more expensive to rent inner-city flats as opposed to renting in the suburbs, or in smaller towns. In major cities such as Auckland or Wellington, a room in a student flat could cost around $180 or more per week, with food and utilities costing an additional $120 per week.

The New Zealand student visa Immigration New Zealand grants student visas and permits and all applications are handled on a case-by-case basis by a specially assigned case manager. There are a number of steps you must follow when applying and it is important that you supply Immigration New Zealand with all the information that it requests so that your application can be processed. Steps to apply for a New Zealand student visa or permit STEP ONE

Complete the Application to Study in New Zealand form (INZ form number 1012) available from Immigration New Zealand offices in New Zealand and overseas and on the Immigration New Zealand website www.immigration.govt.nz.

STEP TWO

Along with your completed and signed application form, you will also need to provide all the information listed on the back of the application form and the correct fee. If you do not submit the required information with your application, it cannot be accepted for processing and therefore will delay your application to study in New Zealand.

GUARDIAN OF A STUDENT VISITOR VISA

If you are enrolled in Years 1 to 8 of a school, or you are a student aged 13 or under and enrolled in a private training establishment, your parent or legal guardian must apply for a special visitor’s visa known as a Guardian of a Student Visitor Visa. This visa allows your parent or legal guardian to live with and care for you in New Zealand. However, your parent or legal guardian will not have to accompany you if you are: a domestic student enrolled in a school hostel approved by the Code Administrator at the Ministry of Education in Year 7 or 8 of a school, or aged 11 to 13 years and enrolled with any other provider that has approval from the Code Administrator at the Ministry of Education. If you are aged 14 to 17 years (inclusive), or you are enrolling in Years 9 to 13, your parent or legal guardian can apply for the guardian visa, but it is not compulsory.

STUDYING IN NEW ZEALAND FOR MORE THAN SIX MONTHS

You may also need to provide a completed temporary entry X-ray certificate (INZ 1096) to show you have been screened for tuberculosis (TB).

STUDYING IN NEW ZEALAND FOR MORE THAN ONE YEAR

You will need to provide a completed medical and X-ray certificate (INZ 1007). Note: children under the age of 11 years and pregnant women and are not required to submit X-ray certificates unless a special report is required. For full details on health requirements, see the health requirements leaflet (INZ 1121).

STEP THREE

Your application must be made and approved by Immigration New Zealand before you are able to travel to New Zealand. Contact details for worldwide offices are available from your local New Zealand Embassy or from the Immigration New Zealand website. Some New Zealand institutions are able to process your visa or permit application on campus. You will need to ask the institution that you are applying to if this is a possibility, or you can check the list available on the Immigration New Zealand website.

Dannevirke High School UNIQUE FEATURES Dannevirke High School was founded in 1903 and has a proud history of academic, sporting and cultural achievement. Located in Dannevirke, it draws students from the town of Dannevirke and other settlements nearby which service the large surrounding rural area. We are a co-educational secondary school for Year 9 to Year 13 with pathways to higher education. We usually have up to ten international students, from a variety of countries, attending the school at any one time. The farming district includes sheep and beef, deer, and dairying blocks but also incorporates many areas of natural beauty that students can enjoy as part of their time in the Tararua District. These include local rivers and streams for fishing and swimming, native bush for walking, and the nearby Ruahine Ranges used by many for tramping and climbing activities. The area has many other recreational facilities for students wishing to be involved in, team or individual sports and cultural activities based at community venues. International Students are integrated into our usual mainstream classes. St John’s College, Hamilton UNIQUE FEATURES St John’s College prepares young men for life in a college with a special Catholic character.
