STUD BULL CATALOGUE 2016 bought it a few years later. By 1881 the property carried 64,000 sheep, 2365 cattle and 165 horses. By 1886 Mairainanga, as it was known, was under the care of Sir John Roberts and Jack Handyside and was one of a very small number of Angus studs in the country. The stud was founded on bloodlines imported by Sir John as the nucleus of the country’s first Angus stud, Gladbrook, and bolstered by additional imports of Aberdeen Angus stud stock. In 1908 Marainanga Station was auctioned into 22 lots and the stud dispersed which provided enough stock to establish and expand several North Island studs. Moanaroa based at the Mairainanga
homestead block was essentially a continuation of the old herd. The bloodlines derived from the original Marainanga Angus Stud are the first recorded landings of Angus cattle in the North Island. They were dropped off a boat in 1886 to swim through the surf at Akitio Beach. Up until 1945 wool was transported by boat and bullocks brought the bales and other goods ashore by wagon. P. V. Smith, Barbara’s grandfather, along with the Humphries family jointly purchased several blocks of land and 17 stud cows with which they founded the Moanaroa Angus Stud. When Dan and Barbara moved into the homestead at Moanaroa they unearthed an original, leather bound, stock book. Its first entry shows Miss Vivacious born in 1891 and
Dan, Barbara and Fiona Ramsden.
