The exterior of the homestead has changed little since it was built in 1936. Wool was transported by boat and bullocks until 1945
shipped to New Zealand from Scotland in 1892. Seven of this cow’s progeny formed part of the 17 strong herd and nucleus of the stud. Dan and Barbara purchased Ware Ware Station from Barbara’s family in 1971 originally run alongside Moanaroa, which was also owned by Barbara’s family. In 1980 Dan took over the running of Moanaroa from Barbara’s aunts Joan and Margaret Smith who devoted their lives to Moanaroa. Keen for Moanaroa to stay in the family they bought out the rest of the family in 1999 and moved into the homestead, built in 1936, in 2007. Both Dan and Barbara have farming backgrounds and the relative isolation is
not an issue with them or Fiona and Hugh. Dan was born in Dannevirke and raised at Kumeroa, the family hill country farm of 1500 acres. A sensible chap he studied for a diploma and took up a shepherding just in case he couldn’t get into farming. Wool is still his passion but with income from wool declining over the years he’s focused on the stud. Barbara too is from a farming family; she was raised at Maraetotara, and has a special fondness for horses, home and garden. The family is passionate about their home and the land. While Fiona was overseas she looked forward to returning home. The family all consider that they are just tenants, trustees of the land for future generations.
