THE ARCHIPELAGO OF MADEIRA

©Francisco Correia

The islands of Madeira and Porto Santo are part of the archipelago of Madeira, located in the Atlantic Ocean, 978km southwest of Lisbon and about 700 km from the African coastline, almost at the same latitude as the Moroccan city of Casablanca. Of volcanic origin, these islands, discovered by the Portuguese navigators in the 15th century, are currently part of the Autonomous Region of Madeira. The island of Madeira has quite an uneven orography. Its terrain and exposure to the prevailing winds create the conditions for the several microclimates on the island. Its climate is mild and there are no great thermal variations throughout the year. The island of Porto Santo has a different geomorphological formation from the island of Madeira. It is a very even island, with little vegetation, as well as poor soils scarcely fit for agriculture. It has a 9 km long beach of fine golden sand, of volcanic origin, and is a widely explored touristic destination at a regional, national and international level. The sporting activities are deeply rooted in this archipelago. It was in the island of Madeira, in the parish of Camacha, that football was played for the first time in Portugal, in the year of 1875. After Portugal’s entry into the European Union, the Autonomous Region of Madeira (RAM) was focused, using the EU’s funding, on the improvement of its accessibilities and infrastructures to be enjoyed by residents and visitors. The improvement of the road network has been an aim throughout time, therefore reducing the distances to cover and increasing the safety of the travellers. Within this context, the region is equipped with several sports infrastructures, such as swimming pools, sports halls and football fields, which allow for the practice of several sports activities.
