Spellins…Inspired by the mis-spelling of “Principal” on the glass door of an office in a certain Plymouth academy, here’s a further example from the Herald: Overall performance at end of Key Stage 4 in 2017 - all pupils. Unless otherwise stated, schools listed are academys If you find any similar examples—send them in!

On behalf of Plymouth NEU, NUT Section, I attended the Black Teachers’ Conference. The conference this year was themed: working together, winning together, and succeeding in unity. The conference drew together mentors and keynote speakers to provide innovative views on race and equality related issues such as islamophobia and institutional racism. With the shared vision of embedding a truly inclusive ethos in schools and the union as a whole, the workshops were bespoke to provide relevant and practical support to actualising this vision. The workshops were designed in a way that evolved the sessions into organic discussions and interesting insights around the barriers and challenges of Black members as professionals in education. As a first time attendee, the conference did not only provide an opportunity to network with other black teachers but also allowed for the validation of personal experiences and thoughts as a black teacher. It was a great event that sharpened my focus and decision to be more active in my participation within the NEU structures. Plymouth NUT Section weekender NUT and invited ATL and NEU members enjoyed an overnight activity at The Bedford Hotel Tavistock. The event was led by Andy Woolley the NEU (NUT Section) Regional Secretary supported by 4 NEU organisers.

  Participants were involved in thinking about how the NEU in the future (we join together completely on 1st January 2019) could evolve as the number of members in Plymouth grow. This was the first event of its kind and we expect similar activities will be held in other Divisions during the year.

The NEU Regional Office has moved to a new location in Exeter—reflecting the need to upgrade facilities and be the base for local training. Tel numbers and emails stay the same.

Rep in your school? Can teachers report HTs to governors and OfSTED if they fail to uphold the HT and Teacher Stds? If WW2 had ended with a German conquest, high-ranking Nazi officers planned to have their children taught at Eton… with the same teachers? Since when did “reform” mean “to make worse?” Ask your School Direct colleagues to join the NEU 54% of support staff colleagues reported physical and/or verbal abuse last year Nearly six thousand criminals have applied to work in schools in the last 18 months—from TAs to HTs 2 out of 3 teenagers feel bombarded by gambling ads when they use social media in all its forms The average teenager has access to at least 6 ‘screens’ ‘Top academy schools’ (according to The Observer) report an alarming cash crisis… It’s instructive to hear what the DfE said in response, “Core school funding is rising and every school will see an increase in funding through the national funding formula.” We note that the word “fair” has been dropped… So everything’s OK then?
