On behalf of all of us here at Wild Dunes Resort, welcome! We are truly honored that you’ve chosen to spend some time with us. If this is your first visit, you’ll soon discover miles of pristine beach, acres of world-class golf, and so much more. If you’re a returning guest, then you already know what a special place this is. I’ve worked here for years, and all over the country for decades, and I know this for sure: Wild Dunes is a rare place. You never need to leave this island to enjoy a wonderful vacation, or stimulating conference. And you can make your Wild Dunes stay as tranquil or adventurous as you like. It’s a snap. But if you do leave, you find yourself in one of the most amazing places I’ve known. Don’t take it from me. Condé Nast Traveler readers recently named Charleston the top destination in the nation, and the third best in the world. We’re not gloating, we feel lucky to live and work here. And hopefully, you’ll feel lucky, too.

So take a deep breath, and enjoy your stay with us. If there is anything we can do to make your visit more memorable, please let us know.

Sincerely,

Frank Fredericks Managing Director

ome time back, British settlers arriving in Charleston discovered a local Indian custom of smoking meat for long periods over steady heat. The settlers adopted the practice, named it barbecue and immediately established Charleston as a foodie mecca. These hundreds of years later, those early settlers may hardly recognize our bridges and new technologies. But they would no doubt feel right at home at the classic Lowcountry table, amply loaded with oysters, shrimp, grits, fresh vegetables, Carolina gold rice and the like. Indeed, in this fast food/chain restaurant world, Charleston has managed to retain – indeed, expand – its own, unique food ways. And that’s good news for visitors, who no doubt arrive hungry for adventure and the flavors favored by locals. You needn’t pile in a car to experience great local tastes. The Sea Island Grill offers fresh-off-the-boat fish and seafood and the flavor combinations that work so well in these semi-tropical climes. And during spring and summer, The Lettered Olive pays homage to Southern heritage with menu staples like the Jumbo Softshell Crab Po-Boy. When your appetite takes you beyond the gates, there’s plenty to celebrate. If you want to dabble in all things Southern, there are many choices. The closest “meat and three” to Wild Dunes is SeeWee Outpost, a great spot that sometimes hosts live local musicians. (Awendaw Green nearby has Wednesday night barn jams featuring free music and cheap eats.) Other eateries specializing in classic Southern include Jestine’s Kitchen, 82 Queen and Poogan’s Porch, all downtown. In Mount Pleasant, Page’s Okra Grill also boasts a very classic menu.

“High” Southern food gets its due, too. Last year editors of Bon Appetit celebrated the genre, naming Husk Restaurant of the Year. High-concept, Husk devotes every single menu entry to ingredients sourced in the South (even the table salt). Reserve far ahead. Another chef adored by locals is Frank Lee, whose Southern roots show daily at SNOB, High Cotton and Old Village Post House. While Charleston is as Southern a city as you’ll find, her citizens have a sophisticated collective palate. Recent years have signaled a movement to sustainability, to cruelty-free sourcing, and to celebrating what’s local and in season. The results are delicious. Feeling casual? This is a friendly place for diners of all ages. Local favorites include Tattooed Moose (board games and a great beer list); Triangle Char and Bar (outdoor seating), and Mike Calders, Poe’s; and waterfront spots like Vickery’s, Fleet Landing, Morgan Creek Grill and The Wreck. Carnivor-acious? Grill 225 and Halls Chophouse downtown invite. Closer to the resort, consider Mount Pleasant’s Crave or Neal Jordan’s. Seeking romance? Tuck into a corner table in the Sea Island Grill. Or check out downtown’s Fulton Five, Charleston Grill, Circa 1886 or upstairs at Cypress. Finally, rest assured, you can’t go wrong dining out locally. Competition is fierce in these parts, so mediocrity doesn’t last. Consult Yelp, Urban Spoon or a Wild Dunes concierge, and they’ll help narrow the list. Lots of terrific restaurants don’t fit easily into our categories. You can’t go wrong with a casual meal at Calder’s Buffalo Pub, Steel City Pizza (formerly Giuseppi’s), Jack’s Cosmic Dogs, Banana Cabana or Shem Creek Bar and Grill and Sullivan’s. Each is a great local place with welcoming atmosphere and friendly menus. Celebrate a great round or a special date at the nearby The Boat House at Breach Inlet and Langdon’s in Mount Pleasant are sure to delight.

Much like his work, the life of Edgar Allan Poe was short, tragic and shrouded in mystery. Best known as the author of the popular poem “The Raven”, Poe is credited with creating the detective and horror story genres. After a brief stint at the University of Virginia, Poe enlisted in the army under the pseudonym Edgar Allan Perry and was stationed at Fort Moultrie at the western end of Sullivan’s Island for thirteen months beginning November 18,1827. His time on the island inspired “The Gold Bug”, a story about a mystical beetle that led to buried treasure. He died alone, impoverished and inebriated at the age of 40 amid conflicting accounts of his demise, yet left an indelible legacy on American literature.

Poe’s Tavern is located two blocks from the beach on Sullivan’s Island, SC. Our juicy half-pound burgers are made with certified Angus Chuck beef, ground in-house and cooked to order.

here exists a beautiful yin and yang here at Wild Dunes. You can choose a truly laid back, relaxing time (i.e. doing a whole bunch of not much). Or you can pack your days and nights with all manner of sightseeing and experiencing. In fact, you can fit both of those dynamics into any day, every day. Walking Distance: In our resort by the sea, you’re free to rent bikes, schedule kayak trips, learn to parasail, or fish. And that ample list barely scratches the surface. Island Adventures® is a great place to start your great escape. We book on-property activities and excursions out of the nearby Isle of Palms marina, as well as downtown activities. You want to do it? We’ll help get it done. Tennis and golf beckon, and if you didn’t bring a set of skills along, no worries; we’ve got great instructors ready to teach.

Use the maps on pages 34-35 to help you locate dining establishments and determine their proximity to the Resort. If you need any help with the map please call the Resort Ambassador by dialing 0 from your Resort phone for assistance.

A Short Trek: Nearby Mount Pleasant offers abundant activities and attractions. Patriot’s Point Maritime Museum is one of the state’s most popular visitor destinations, and offers an intimate view of the lives and triumphs of World War II troops. Nearby lies the water taxi stop, which ferries folks downtown and back on a regular basis. “Mount P” also sports some nice parks, including the new Waterfront Park below the Ravenel Bridge. With great views and a public pier, it’s a great place to start a fantastic (and free!) adventure: a bike ride or hike across the bridge to the Peninsula. You can’t beat the views from this world-class span, and it’s become a favorite gathering place for local fitness and photography buffs.

Awendaw – a rural village East of Mount Pleasant – boasts two great destinations. The Center for Birds of Prey is a conservation/education organization that celebrates winged raptors. Guided tours and regular flight demonstrations are great for all ages. Awendaw Green is another great local find, where local bands play free concerts every Wednesday night under the moss-draped Live Oak trees. Charleston, Proper: Downtown Charleston beckons with an abundance of things to see and do. So we’ll try to make it easy for you. Museum Mile is an expanse of Meeting Street that encompasses Charleston Museum, the Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry, numerous historic houses and the Gibbes Museum of Art. Stroll the span and you’ll know so much about the City you’ll be able to pass as a native. The Aquarium Wharf district is home to more than fish. Here, you can board the ferry to Fort Sumter, and tour the South Carolina Aquarium, where sharks, otters and a changing list of attractions keep everybody entertained. Guided tours are another great way to see the city. Particular favorites include carriage rides (the lottery system that governs these is an adventure in itself!), ghost tours of the City Jail (considered one of the most haunted places in America), and food tours. You can also experience Charleston’s origins with a tour of its numerous, and diverse, plantations. A number of them line the Ashley River (which used to serve as a water-road for the region), including Drayton Hall, Middleton and Magnolia, all of which offer a glimpse into the past in lovely, natural settings. On the East Cooper side you can experience Boone Hall and its grounds. Finally, don’t miss a trip to Charles Town Landing, a state park that interprets the British colony of Charles Town. The park includes a small zoo, a gorgeous visitor’s center, and a peak at the Lowcountry that originally appealed to a whole bunch of adventurers just like you!

City of Folly Beach

C

enter Street Beach is located on both sides of the Folly Beach Fishing Pier. In season, this is always a very busy beach - and great for people watching! Here you can rent Jet Skis & Boogie Boards, purchase food and beverages from the Tide’s Tiki Bar and restaurant or the Starfish Grille on the Pier, watch the locals play half ball, take a walk on the Folly Pier or watch the surfers. Plenty to do here! The Folly Beach Edwin S. Taylor Fishing Pier is 24 feet wide, extends more than 1,045 feet into the Atlantic Ocean and is 23 feet above sea level. Delight in fishing, walking, birding and the opportunity to enjoy wonderful views of Folly Beach on the “Edge of America”. The best surfing on Folly is in the area best known as “The Washout.” Experienced surfers claim this is where you can experience the best waves on the South Carolina Coast. Hurricane Hugo was responsible for The Washout. Where a block of homes once stood, the wind now blows unimpeded across the beach, through the wetlands and then to the Folly River. This wind effect is what experts claim causes the water there to “roll” so well.

Coastal Expeditions

C

oastal Expeditions has been offering high integrity natural adventures in the low country since 1992. Now in our 20th year of service we have four locations including the Bulls Island ferry in Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge, just 15 minutes north of the Isle of Palms, and three different water front kayaking outposts. One of our favorite departures is from the Isle of Palms Marina adjacent to Wild Dunes Resort. This location offers an escape from the often crowded commercial creek setting. The estuaries behind the Isle of Palms are some of the most pristine in the world and are home to abundant wildlife and undisturbed scenic marsh views. The experienced naturalist staff at Coastal Expeditions is standing by to host a guided tour or facilitate your group on a self guided adventure. Experience these calm waters much as the Native Americans would have seen them hundreds of years ago and escape into the intimate creek wilderness behind the beach, perhaps the best kept secret on the Isle of Palms and what makes Wild Dunes truly Wild...

isitors come to the Lowcountry for all sorts of reasons: the sun, the surf, the golf, the food. And of course, they come for the shopping. In fact, the magnetism of Charleston’s merchants made a big impression on the well-heeled readers of Travel + Leisure. In 2010, they ranked historic Charleston #1 for shopping and antiques out of a pool of 36 world-class cities. Whether you’re browsing on the island, or heading downtown, you’ll find a tremendous collection of spendy, trendy, thrifty and nifty goods.

Use the maps on page

Right Here: Wild Dunes Resort works hard to make guests feel right at home, right down to the on-resort shopping. Whether it’s sundries and groceries, or a need for mementos, that drives you shopping, we’ve got all the bases covered. Check out Hudson’s Market, the course and court pro shops, and the Surf Shop at the Grand Pavilion (seasonal), as well as the Island Adventures Outfitters. That Village Plaza shop has loads of treasures in store.

Next Door: The front beach of Isle of Palms is one of those places that just makes people smile. Families return generation after generation and love exploring the surf shops and souvenir stores. If you’re up for a hike, walk the beach there and back, knowing a cool drink awaits at either end. Just across the connector is Mount Pleasant and the robust Town Center mall. Home to a blend of national chains, franchises and a few local shops, there’s plenty to buy and do. Nearby you’ll also find Seaside Farms and a smattering of nifty boutiques, cafes and national stores.

Seeking a little Mayberry? Set your GPS to Pitt Street, the threeblock-long stretch of the town’s Old Village. Home to a quaint soda counter - where local kids still buy on credit - and a handful of galleries and small shops, it’s a pleasant place to while away a couple of hours. Downtown Charleston: The City Market has long been a magnet for visitors, displaying goods that range from the funky to the fine, these locally-owned stalls have recently undergone a serious makeover. While shoppers still find local treasures, they do so in a refurbished string of warehouses that stretch several Market Street blocks. Long ago the place where locals secured groceries, the Market today offers historic reproductions, art pieces, local crafts, toys and more. Intersecting Market Street is one of the nation’s toniest retail corridors – King Street. Long ago, King Street was the highest ridge on the Peninsula, which made it a natural choice for a trail. Today it’s a miles-long line of quaint shops and eateries, all flanked by sweet streets with plenty of appeal. King Street divides into three parts: Lower King (below Market) is home to a wonderful collection of antiques dealers and specialty clothiers. Stroll this stretch and you’ll come to see how very much Charlestonians love their sterling, their Chinoiserie and their bespoke suits. Middle King (Market to Calhoun) is a buzzing shopping district that attracts fashionistas, co-eds and tech heads (you’ll find them camped out at the Apple store). With a mix of national stores, designer brands and small, local boutiques, the neighborhood is especially busy on weekend afternoons. Upper King (from Calhoun to Columbus) has emerged as a design district, but offers more than décor. Local boutiques include haute couturiers, ages-old music dealers, barbershops, consignment stores and more. There are also loads of great, local cafes that share the blocks with retailers. If you’re timing is good, you can join the throngs for Second Sunday on King, when officials convert the street into a pedestrian mall. Each month features a unique theme, as well as a smattering of local musicians, expanded al fresco dining, and more. But no matter the day, there’s plenty to try-on, buy, and enjoy in the Holy City and her environs. top left: the Shoppes at Seaside. bottom: the Shoppes at Seaside.

hether you’re here for the first time or returning for the umpteenth visit, you know Wild Dunes Resort is a world apart. Nestled as it is on this sea island, near (but not too close) to one of the world’s great cities, this is a truly special place. But being a world apart doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice service and convenience. In fact, our readiness to serve consistently earns high praise from consumer review sites and national media. Anticipating needs is our special stock in trade. That’s why the Resort offers so many amenities. Fact is, you’d have a hard time stumping our action-ready staff. We’re prepared to do it all: help brides, book a cruise for 30 of your closest friends, style your hair for that last-minute corporate dinner. You name it, we’ll help make it happen (or figure out who in town can!). We also know that sometimes the unexpected happens. And we’re ready for that. Dial Guest Services in the event you require directions to a nearby doctor, an urgent care facility or (sadly, it happens), a hospital. This area offers abundant, world-class health care. Indeed, it’s consistently cited as one of the reasons so many people move to the Lowcountry ever year. Finally, we’re often asked to help guests get from Point A to B. Whether it’s an airport pickup you need, or a designated driver for a round trip downtown and back, we’ll put the pedal to the metal. The bottom line is this: we know why you’re here, and it isn’t to get bogged down in details. So just sit back, and relax and let us take care of it.
