FÁILTE

Fáilte ón gCathaoirleach Fáilte romhaibh a chairde go Pairc Tailteann chuig cluichi ceannais craobh peil an Mhí. Fáilte faoi leith roimh na himreoiri , lucht leanuna , na reiteoirí agus na hoifigígh freisin agus tá súil agam go mbeidh cluichi iontach agus sportúil againn arís. This weekends county football finals will be somewhat different from what we have used to in years past as we are all now living in a vastly changed world. A crowd limit of just 200 spectators would have seemed unimaginable a few short months ago. Notwithstanding this, I’m delighted to be able to welcome you all to Pairc Tailteann and a special welcome to those who may be watching on television and on-line. Our county championship finals are always a special occasion in our calendar and we can look forward to three exciting encounters over the weekend. The Fairyhouse Steel sponsored senior football championship final has brought together Ratoath and Gaeil Colmcille. After claiming their first senior title last year, Ratoath will be aiming to retain their title while the men from Kells will hope to bridge a 29-year gap since their last success at this level. The opening match on Sunday is the Junior Football final which is sponsored by Teach na Teamhrach and it pits Ballivor against St Vincents from Ardcath. Junior football in Meath is very strong and a close encounter is envisaged to see who will claim the Peter Mc Dermott Cup. The Intermediate final on Saturday evening will bring together last years beaten finalist Trim and Ballinabrackey for the right to claim the Meade Potato Company-sponsored title. These are two very proud clubs and progression to the senior ranks by either side would be a massive achievement. It is a particularly proud day for all the finalists involved and I wish all the players, the mentors and the referees and their officials the best of luck and may the best teams win. The onset of COVID -19 has propelled technology forward at a much quicker pace than some of us would expect and the streaming of games has now become the norm in ensuring that as many of our supporters can get to see our matches. This initiative has proven to be a great success and I want to acknowledge the efforts of Ciaran Flynn and our PR and Marketing committee in promoting this project

The year 2020 will no doubt be remembered as the year of Covid-19 and a worldwide pandemic. It has been an unprecedented event over the last 8 months. Everything that we cherish and take so much for granted is now threatened by this virus and fear has permeated many peoples lives especially the most vulnerable in our society. However, the response of the GAA clubs in Meath and across the country has been extraordinary. While adhering to Public Health guidelines, our clubs have reacted magnificently and generously to the call for help in response to Covid-19. The actions of our clubs have demonstrated the special and important relationship between the GAA and our communities. It is these actions that should make everyone proud to be a member of such an organisation and I want to thank all the clubs and especially our Health and Well-being committee, for the work they have done, and continue to do, in supporting our society. On behalf of Coiste na Mí, I’d also like to place on record our sincere thanks and gratitude to all our frontline workers who are the real heroes in trying to combat this virus. I also realise that many families have been affected by bereavements during this difficult time and I extend our sympathy to you all. I want to acknowledge the work of all our county committees in what has been a very difficult time for playing our games, especially our CCC who managed to organise and complete our schedule in such a competent manner. All our committees have shown tremendous resolve in ensuing all our activities could be carried out in a safe and organised environment. A huge debt of gratitude to all our stewards in Pairc Tailteann, under the guidance of head steward, Jim Cooney for the numerous hours they have spent over the number of months in making sure everything was up to standard on match days. Also a big thank you to John Mc Bride from JMB Sportsfield for always having the playing surface in such a pristine condition. I’d also like to thank all our media colleagues for the trojan work they have done in promoting our games during this pandemic. A huge thank to all our supporters who either attended our games or availed of the steaming service this year and to all our clubs and officials for your co-operation and understanding in the playing of games this year. I want to acknowledge the continued generous support of all our sponsors and urge patrons to support these businesses where possible. Finally, I hope that everyone enjoys this weekend’s matches and Coiste na Mí look forward to welcoming you back to our games whenever it is safe to do so. ANTHEM

Annie Galligan sings Amhrán na BhFiann Annie Galligan, Oldcastle GAA Club, is heavily involved in the promotion of Scór in the club, both Scór na nÓg & Scór Sinsir. Annie represented Oldcastle in the Aithriseoireacht/Scéalaíocht (recitation), the Amhránaíocht Aonair (solo singing) and the Nuachleas (novelty act) at the 2020 county final in Gibbstown Hall on February 28th. Annie was crowned county champion in both solo singing & recitation competitions & was part of Oldcastle’s winning novelty act group. The Leinster Scór semi-final was held in The Downs GAA on March 7th & Annie wowed the audience once again & won the recitation competition. Annie & her club mates in the novelty act also won the semi-final. The Leinster Scór final was scheduled to be held in The Solstice Navan on March 22nd but unfortunately COVID-19 upset the best made plans. Annie would have represented Oldcastle GAA & Meath GAA in the recitation & the novelty act at the Leinster final, but Scór 2020 was not meant to be…..another year hopefully. The journey will continue!

FEATURE

30 Years Ago... Meath’s Clean Sweep Of Leinster Football Titles and the National League. 1990 Was A Hugely Successful And Unique Year In The County’s GAA History. It was arguably the most successful year in the history of Meath football...all 4 Leinster titles were captured and there was also a memorable National League triumph after a marathon campaign which saw the team play a whopping 12 games! Unfortunately, the Minor team was the only one of the quartet of provincial champions to go on to All-Ireland glory. Sadly, due to the COVID-19 restrictions, Coiste na Mi is limited to some guests this afternoon but we wish to recognise the outstanding achievements of our 1990 football teams and we extend a warm and appreciative welcome to the captains and the managers of the history-making teams.

Senior...Colm O’Rourke and Sean Boylan. Minor...Enda McManus and Paul Kenny. Under-21...John Brady and Mattie Kerrigan. Junior...Robbie O’Connell and Oliver Shanley.

National League 1989-90 The Senior team was mostly comprised of the same panel of players who had won the 1987 and 1988 All-Ireland titles but their League form was somewhat patchy. In those days, 4 rounds of the League were played before the Christmas break with the remaining 3 rounds played in the Spring. Meath suffered one defeat before the break, against Louth, but when they had 3 goals to spare over Mayo in the 4th round, they appeared to be on track for promotion and a place in the knock-out stages. However, successive defeats to Roscommon, (in flooded Kiltoom], and Antrim, in Casement Park, saw them finish on 8 pts from a possible 14. Normally, that would not be good enough for qualification but, incredibly, 3 other teams also finished

on 8 points, sharing 2nd place behind Roscommon on 11 points. The other 3 teams were Antrim, Mayo and Tyrone. Score difference was not a factor at the time so it was decided that the issue would be resolved with 2 ‘semi-finals’ and a ‘final’ for the prize of a place in the quarter-final! Meath beat Mayo by 8 points at Croke Park while Tyrone accounted for Antrim. The ‘final’ was played at Breffni Park where Sean Boylan’s team were again comfortable winners by a margin of 10 points. There was another trip to Ulster for the quarter-final against Donegal and although Meath had 5 points to spare at the final whistle in Clones, 2-12 to 0-13, it was a close and difficult encounter. David Beggy scored both goals. Brian Stafford scored 8 points in the semi-final against defending champions Cork at Croke Park with Liam Harnan and Liam Hayes also starring in the 0-14 to 0-10 win over their old rivals. Down had emerged as League Final opponents and after an absorbing encounter, Meath were champions for the 6th time and for the 2nd time in 3 years. The winning margin was just 2 points, 2-7 to 0-11, and once again, Meath were grateful to Brian Stafford who scored a penalty when PJ Gillic was fouled with only 10 minutes remaining, David Beggy had scored Meath’s 1st half goal.

8 MEATH GAA CHAMPIONSHIPS 2020

Leinster Senior Championship 1990 “Fresh” from their arduous League campaign, Meath started on their Championship voyage with an emphatic win over Longford at Páirc Tailteann. Tommy Dowd made his debut but it was Colm O’Rourke who finished as top scorer with 2-3. The margin of victory over Laois was even more emphatic, 4-14 to 0-6 with Bernard Flynn scoring 2-5. Dublin and Meath had been seeded to meet in the final and it was Meath who came out on top thanks to the game’s only goal, scored by Colm O’Rourke very early in the game when he beat John O’Leary to a dropping ball. Brian Stafford scored 8 points while Gerry McEntee made a return as a substitute. Páirc Tailteann June 10th

Meath subsequently qualified for their 3rd All-Ireland final appearance in 4 years by beating Donegal but a lengthy League campaign and a sub-par performance against Cork saw them go under by 2 points, 0-9 to 0-11. All-Ireland Semi-final: Croke Park Aug 19th

Meath 3-9 Donegal 1-7

All-Ireland Final: Croke Park Sept 16th

Cork 0-11 Meath 0-9

Leinster Minor Championship 1990 Meath’s record at Minor level was a source of significant disappointment for supporters...it had been 33 years since their only All-Ireland title and 13 years since their 2nd appearance in a final. But hopes were high that a breakthrough could be made in 1990 when a very talented group of players emerged. A firstround victory over Longford was followed by a serious scare against Laois. Kildare provided the opposition for Paul Kenny’s team on Leinster final day and it was this display that generated a huge degree of optimism among supporters. Centre-half-back Graham Geraghty produced a performance for the ages while several other players, including Enda McManus, Hugh Carolan, Jason Hendrick, Terry Connor, David Martin and Tony Byrne also showed immense promise in a 13 point victory over the Lilywhites. Leinster Under-21 Championship 1990 After beating Louth in the opening round, Meath, who were the defending champions, had a narrow escape against Kildare in the provincial semi-final at Páirc Tailteann. Kildare were the better team for most of the game and looked set for victory until Tommy Dowd’s late goal turned the match on its head. There was a huge collective sigh of relief when the final whistle was blown with Meath ahead by a point. Wicklow had a particularly talented team and their clashes with Meath in this grade in the previous years had been tough and extremely tight. However, on this occasion Mattie Kerrigan’s team came out on top thanks to an excellent first-half performance...substitute Alan Browne scored the game’s only goal in the closing stages. Substitutes; John Henry and Alan Browne. Other panel members were; Kevin Ludlow, John McDermott, Kevin Cahill, Tommy Dillon, Ciaran Smyth, Derek Maher and Niall Cooney

Meath were subsequently beaten by Tyrone, 2-10 to 1-9, in the All-Ireland semi-final at Breffni Park.

Leinster Junior Championship 1990 With 7 teams in the Leinster Junior championship, Meath came out on the right side of the draw with a bye into the semi-final. Kildare provided the opposition in Newbridge where Drumbaragh’s Christy Carry scored a vital goal to set up a final meeting with Dublin. The game was played in Drogheda as the curtain-raiser to the Senior clash of Dublin and Louth. There were no goals but Ollie Shanley’s team emerged with a 4 point victory, 0-15 to 0-11, with the points coming from Liam Smyth (0-5), Tommy Dowd (0-4), John Henry (0-4) and Jody Devine (0-2).
