the long journey south. When they arrived in Bethlehem there was no room at the inn because so many people had come to register, and so Joseph and Mary had to take shelter in a stable with the animals, the ox and the ass. And there Mary gave birth to her first-born son Jesus, and she wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger of straw. That night an angel of the Lord appeared to some shepherds in the field who were watching over their flock, and told them of the birth in the city of David of a Saviour, Christ the Lord. And the shepherds hurried to Bethlehem and found Jesus in the stable, lying in a manger just as the angel had said, and they bowed down and worshipped him as the Messiah.:

And this, from the Gospel of St Matthew And out of the east came wise men to worship the King of the Jews. They were led to Bethlehem by a star which stood over the place where the young Jesus lay, and the wise men, or Magi, fell down and worshipped him and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. And that is the story behind Christmas.

Beautifully produced and charmingly illustrated, The Book of Christmas is a treasure trove of all things Christmas to delight the whole family.

So Joseph and Mary, who was by now his wife, set off on

In The Book of Christmas, best-selling author and acclaimed historian, Christopher Winn, casts a revealing eye over the stories, myths and legends of Christmas. Along with a detailed Christmas timeline outlining significant moments and stories throughout history as well as the evolution behind many of the more mainstream customs, Christopher Winn unearths all sorts of unusual and symbolic traditions from around the world; from the Druidical origins of the parasitic plant mistletoe and why we now associate it with kissing, to Japan’s predilection for a Kentucky Fried Chicken Christmas dinner.

Christopher Winn is a freelance writer and historian, and has been a collector of trivia for over 25 years, during which time he has written and set quiz questions for the Daily Mail, Daily Telegraph, Guardian, Spectator, Daily Express and The Field and has worked on television with Terry Wogan, Jonathan Ross, David Frost and many others.

a young virgin by the name of Mary, who lived in Nazareth in Galilee and was engaged to be married to a carpenter called Joseph. Gabriel announced to Mary that she would bear a child who would be the son of God and should be called Jesus. Joseph was visited by another angel who told him that it was the will of God that he should marry Mary and bring up the child as his son. Not long before Jesus was due to be born, a decree went out from the Roman Emperor Caesar Augustus that there should be a census of all those who lived in the Roman Empire, and that everyone should register in the town where their family came from. Joseph was of the House of David and his ancestors came from Bethlehem, some 70 miles away.

Greenery

Holy

The first decorations of any kind were natural evergreens, which were used inside and outside by the ancient Egyptians, the Celts, the Vikings and other pre-Christian civilisations to celebrate the winter solstice, to ward off the evil spirits that proliferated in the dark winter months and to offer hope and encouragement that the warmth of the sun would return after the cold of winter. During Saturnalia the Romans would deck their halls with boughs of holly and also send evergreen boughs to friends and acquaintances.

Druids regarded holly, with its ability to thrive through the winter months, as a sacred or ‘holy’ plant. The origins of the words holly and holy are the same – holy (as in sacred) comes from the Old English word halig, meaning wholeness (holiness), a state of religious perfection, and halig in turn derives from an older word holegn, which is the Old English name for holly. The prickly leaves of the holly were thought to deter witches and demons and even malign elements such as thunder and lightning. To shield themselves from such abominations Druids would deck their temples with holly and, for added protection, they might even wear sprigs of holly in their hair when out and about.

When the peoples of northern Europe began to celebrate Christmas instead of Saturnalia they continued the practice of decking out their halls and churches with evergreens, using the native evergreen plants that grew in abundance around them such as holly, ivy and mistletoe. While the evergreens were still associated with growth and fertility they were also imbued with a new, Christian meaning as well.

Cracker Joke Knock knock! Who’s there? Holly Holly who? — Holly-days are here again

39

For Christians, the prickles of the holly represent the crown of thorns as worn by Christ before he was nailed to the Cross, while the berries are stained forever red by the blood He shed. The Christian symbolism is reflected in these lines from the traditional English carol The Holly and the Ivy, which dates from the 16th or 17th century. The form and music as we know them today are the work of folk music enthusiast Cecil J. Sharp, who collected and revived numerous old English folk songs and carols for his book English Folk-Carols, published in 1911.

The holly and the ivy, When they are both full grown, Of all the trees that are in the wood, The holly bears the crown. The holly bears a berry As red as any blood... The holly bears a prickle As sharp as any thorn ... Holly and ivy were often linked together in a fertility context since pagans considered the hard, prickly holly to be a male plant and the softer ivy female, while for Christians the holly represents Christ and the ivy represents his mother the Virgin Mary. Although it was considered unlucky to bring either plant into the house before Christmas Eve, it was said that whichever plant was discovered in the garden and brought indoors first would determine whether the man or woman of the house would be in charge that year!

Encounters with Peggy Guggenheim An Intimate Collection of Behindthe-scenes Photos Featuring the Legendary Art Collector Stefan Moses Behind-the-scenes photographs of renowned art collector and eccentric, Peggy Guggenheim, taken between 1969 and 1974

• An intimate photographic portrait of Peggy Guggenheim between 1969 and 1974, with many previously unpublished images • The book includes dramatic photos captured by Stefan Moses of Peggy in her favourite places around Venice, including her private palazzo • Art, photography and fashion lovers will delight in the glamour and eccentricity portrayed in this collection • There are Guggenheim museums in Bilbao, Venice, Berlin, Vilnius, Helsinki, New York, Guadalajara and Las Vegas, as well as one under construction in Abu Dhabi

Marguerite ‘Peggy’ Guggenheim was one of the greatest art collectors of the 20th century. Using her inheritance to open her first art gallery, Peggy’s love of art lead her to eventually settle in Venice, where she relaunched her life after becoming the star of the 1948 Venice Art Biennale. For her, a life without the inspiration of her artist and writer friends would have been unthinkable. In Encounters with Peggy Guggenheim, renowned photographer Stefan Moses reveals many never-before seen photos of Peggy. Striking, eccentric and dramatic, Moses photographed Peggy in her favourite places around Venice, as well as in her private palazzo at Canal Grande. See Peggy as she glides on her gondola with her Lhasa Apso dogs or wears her iconic butterfly glasses made by Edward Melcarth – the quickness and talent of Moses captures the character of one of the world’s most eccentric and inspirational women.

Born in Silesia in 1928, Stefan Moses lived in Munich from 1950 until his death in 2018. During World War II he was detained in a Nazi concentration camp, but managed to escape in 1945, and despite the horrors, remained in Germany. He was one of the most distinctive portrait photographers of his time.

8 Promises to Make You Feel Good About Who You Are and the Life You Live

101 Ways to Simplify Your Life

Most people are terribly unkind to themselves. They are unforgiving of even their smallest failings. But these people are often loving and kind parents, generous friends, and supportive colleagues. They give everyone else their best, only to give themselves their worst.

The Kindness Pact introduces the reader to the ‘Eight Promises’: commitments to feel good about who you are. The book invites you to be as kind to yourself as you are to the other important people in your life. Each chapter explores one of the Eight Promises through inspiring stories of personal change.

Less Is More is a collection of inspirational messages and advice that encourages the reader to enjoy life more by living more simply. Trying to do it all is exhausting – and too often, people find themselves asking ‘what was it all for?’ Many conclude the things they pushed themselves to do and have were never that important. It invites the reader to make small, simple changes in the way they live, like learning to say ‘no’ and embracing silence: changes that will simplify their life and leave them feeling relaxed and happy, instead of stressed and overwhelmed.

ESSENTIALS

Semra Haksever A healing guide to modern magic In Everyday Magic, Semra Haksever introduces readers to simple magic and rituals for everyday, which can be used as powerful tools to encourage self-love and a fulfilled life.

• In these uncertain times people are gravitating towards empowering practices like meditation, crystals, smudging and astrology • Mysticism allows people to feel in control of their lives and minds • 2017 was officially the year of the witch: the ultimate symbol of female power

No longer the stuff of broomsticks and cauldrons, witchcraft is about self-care in a modern world. It is for all women looking to channel their inner power, cleanse, heal and embrace a little more spirituality. Semra will teach readers how to weave bespoke spells, construct an altar, create manifestations, perform moon rituals and gratitude meditations, and more. Featuring information on crystals, colour healing, herbs, oils and much more, this is a book on cosmic assistance that is accessible for everyone.

Semra Haksever was a fashion stylist for over a decade before becoming a bohemian entrepreneur and starting Mama Moon, a bespoke collection of magical scented candles and potions. She has practised reiki, crystal therapy and moon rituals for over 20 years. This is her first book.

I’m reconnecting with myself

The Book of Ikigai Discover the Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life in Just 12 Weeks Caroline de Surany A 12-week personal development program to help you find your purpose in this world and change your life profoundly

• Ikigai is a Japanese word which roughly translates as a ‘reason for being’, encompassing joy, a sense of purpose, and a feeling of wellbeing • Ikigai has been referred to as the new hygge and lagom • Divided into 12 chapters, one per week, the book offers a concrete and illustrated personal development program and more than 70 exercises

This week, it’s essential, if you’re to make progress in your quest towards your ikigai, to reconnect with yourself. How can we make sense of life if we can’t manage to recognise our own daily needs? It’s not the Holy Grail; the answer is within you, so finding your interior dialogue is an important step. The Japanese inspiration this week will be finding pleasure in the moment and connecting with nature. This week, we’ll also look at pathways you need to renew within yourself, particularly within your body. Because even if you no longer know what you need, your body knows. And that’s the good news. Let’s rediscover quality of being.

Ikigai is a Japanese term that can be translated, simply, as ‘reason for being’, and many people across the world believe that finding your own personal ikigai is the secret to a long and happy life. The Book of Ikigai is divided into 12 chapters, one for each week. Each chapter starts with a reflection and personal anecdotes from the author, reiki master Caroline de Surany, and includes an exercise – from drawing, to playing a game – each day to enable you get closer to your ikigai. Move from Week one, I reconnect with myself, through Week eight: I adopt an attitude of self-compassion – all the way to Week twelve: I glow. By the time you have finished this book, you will be empowered to understand your own values – what makes you feel connected; what makes you feel love; what gives you a sense of place in the world – and move towards a way of life that will bring you peace of mind and lasting joy.

Caroline du Surany is an author, coach and lecturer, as well as a trained reiki master, naturopath and hypnotherapist.

Hanami and Momijigari: the link to nature The Japanese are very attached to nature. They respect and venerate it, and visit the countryside regularly to benefit from the changes of season. There are two main festivals honouring nature in Japan: Hanami, in spring, celebrates the cherry blossom; Momijigari, the hunt for red leaves in autumn, lets people revel in landscapes transformed by the changing colours of the leaves. Nature is superb in Japan, but she does have the advantage of being universal. Everywhere in the world, and close to where you live, you can appreciate the beauty of seasonal transformations, the delicacy of a flower, and the surprising strength of a 100-year-old tree.

88 · SELF HELP & REFERENCE

Returning to nature helps us reconnect with ourselves. Observing flowers, trees and birds sends us into a meditative state that allows us to let go of thought and live in the present moment. Each week, give yourself a personal mini-Hanami or Momijigari, depending on the season, and thank nature for her beauty and her blessings. Celebrate her simply by walking with pleasure and curiosity.

Onsen of Japan Japan’s Best Hot Springs and Bathhouses Steve Wide and Michelle Mackintosh The only English-language guidebook to Japan’s best hot springs and bathhouses No trip to Japan is complete without an authentic onsen (hot spring) experience. But the art of Japanese communal bathing is still a mystery to most Western tourists.

• The first guidebook for Westerners dedicated to Japanese onsen, one of the country’s most cherished pastimes • UK tourism to Japan is booming (growing by 13% each year); and both the upcoming Rugby World Cup (2019) and the Summer Olympics (2020) are in Japan • Mr Porter has cited saunas as one of the key trends for 2018 • Information and reviews are written specifically for Western tourists, covering information such as onsen etiquette • Over 100 onsen are featured; organised geographically

Also available: Tokyo Precincts ISBN 9781741174687 Hardback £17.99

Kyoto Pocket Precincts ISBN 9781741175172 Paperback £9.99

Help is now at hand. Onsen of Japan showcases over 100 of the best onsen from across the country. Alongside vivid descriptions and beautiful images, each listing includes a checklist with important travel information, such as price range, whether same sex or mixed bathing is available, whether English is spoken, and if tattoos are accepted. The book includes a guide to etiquette, as well as information on different water types and their healing benefits. The authors also offer tips on how to take a bath like a local, bathing in different seasons, the best places to take a foot bath (ashiyu) or hand bath (teyu), and where you can cook your own onsen egg. This is essential reading for anyone dreaming of visiting Japan.

Steve Wide (photographer) and Michelle Mackintosh (designer) have been obsessed with Japan since their first visit in the late 1990s. This is the third Japan guidebook they’ve authored, following Tokyo Precincts and Kyoto Pocket Precincts.
