THE ANGLED PAVILION

TO BEGIN THE PROJECT THE ANGELED PAVILION, A STUDY OF THE HUMAN BODY WAS DONE TO DEVELOP A SENSE OF SCALE AND MOVEMENT.

THIS WAS DONE BY BREAKING DOWN THE BODY INTO SEGMENTED GROUPS AND MEASURING EACH OF THOSE GROUPS TO CREATE AN AUGMENTED BODY FORM.

AFTER THE BODY WAS STUDIED, STUDENT GROUPS WERE FORMED TO CREATE A DEVICE THAT WOULD ALTER THE BODY AND ITS MOVEMENTS AS IT WALKED UP AND DOWN A SET OF STAIRS. THIS DEVICE, CREATED AND SHOWN ON THE LEFT, PROHIBITS THE USER FROM BEING ABLE TO LOOK DOWN AT THEIR FEET WHILE WALKING. THIS SLOWS DOWN THE USERS MOVEMENT MAKING EACH STEP INTENTIONAL. AS ONE FOOT IS RAISED TO TAKE A STEP, THE TOP OF THE DEVICE TILTS.

FROM THIS, THE DEVICE GOT IT’S NAME, SEASAW.

THE MOTION OF THE BODY WITH THE ALTERATION DEVICE WAS STUDIED IN THE ABOVE MOTION ANALYSIS THAT IS BROKEN INTO FOUR SEPARATE TOPICS.

THREE DIFFERENT COMBINATIONS OF THE FOUR ANALYSES WERE DONE TO FIND RELATIONS BETWEEN THE DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF THE DEVICE.

(GRAVITY TRIANGLES + GRAVITY AXIS + LINES OF EXTENSION)

THE BALANCE AXIS OF THE BODY SHIFTED THROUGHOUT MOTION IN RELATION TO THE MOTION OF THE DEVICE

CONTAINMENT

(ALTERATION DEVICE + LINES OF EXTENSION)

THE BODY WAS CONTAINED TO THE SPACE CREATED FROM THE DEVICE, THEREFORE THE BODY REMAINED INSIDE THE AREA OF THE DEVICE THROUGHOUT ALL MOTION.

MOTION

(BODY STRUCTURE + DEVICE + REGULAR GRID)

THE BODY’S MOTION ROTATED AT THE HIP IN RELATION WITH THE TOP OF THE DEVICE. WHEN MOVEMENT OCCURED AT THE HIP, THE DECIVE WOULD MOVE. THERE WAS A LIMITED RANGE OF MOTION.

FRAME BY FRAME MOTION

A STAIR PRECEDENT, THE TRIANGLE STAIRCASE AT YALE UNIVERSITY ART MUSEUM, WAS STUDIED. THEN USING THE MOTION ANALYSIS OF THE ALTERED BODY, ITERATIONS COULD BE MADE TO THE PRECEDENT TO THEN HAVE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ALTERED BODY AND IT’S DEVICE.

BELOW ARE CHANGES TO THE PRECEDENT STAIRCASE THAT SHOWCASE THE THREE COMBINATIONS OF THE MOTION ANALYSIS. THESE INDIVIDUAL CHANGES WILL THEN BE USED TO CREATE ONE COHESIVE STAIRCASE, THE LOOKING STAIRS.

TO FORM THE FINAL DESIGN FOR AN ART SCHOOL IN LUBBOCK, STUDENT GROUPS WERE FORMED AND WITHIN THOSE GROUPS, TWO PRECEDENTS WERE CHOSEN TO STUDY SO THAT AN ELEMENT CATALOG COULD BE CREATED AND USED FOR FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF THE PROJECT.

ELEMENTS WERE CHOSEN FROM BOTH PRECEDENT CATALOGS TO CREATE A HYBRID MODEL THAT COULD THEN BE MULTIPLIED AND MANIPULATED INTO A LARGER AND COHESIVE FORM.

VILLA VALAMARNA, DESIGNED BY PALLADIO, WAS THE PRECEDENT STUDY TO USE FOR THE FURTHER DESIGN OF THE SOLAR OBSERVATORY.

WHEN STUDYING THE DESIGN OF THE CHOSEN VILLA, A GREATER CONCEPT WAS CHOSEN TO MOVE FORWARD WITH.

THE MAIN CONCEPT FOUND THROUGH THIS STUDY WAS THE SYMMETRICAL “HINGE” THAT WAS PRESENT THROUGHOUT THE DESIGN.

TAKING THIS FURTHER AND APPLYING THE IDEA OF THE CONCEPT MODEL TO OUR GIVEN SITE AND START TO BUILD FORM.

CARRYING ON THE IDEA OF THE SYMMETRICAL “HINGE”, A CONCEPT MODEL WAS CREATED TO FURTHER DEVELOP THE IDEA INTO A VISUAL CONCEPT.

ANALYZING THE CITY OF BOSTON TO STUDY THE URBAN PLANNING AND THE CULTURE SO THOSE IDEAS CAN BE BROUGHT TOGETHER TO CREATE A CLIMATORIUM ADDRESSING AN ISSUE IN BOSTON.

CITY ANALYSIS

THE DRIVING POINT OF THE BOSTON CLIMATORIUM IS THE ORIGINAL SHORELINE OF BOSTON AND HOW THROUGHOUT HISTORY, THERE HAS BEEN INFILL TO CREATE THE AREA OF BOSTON KNOWN TODAY. WITH THIS INFILL CAME THE ISSUE OF WATER POLLUTION IN THE CITY. THE PRIMARY STUDY OF THE CIMLATORIUM EMPHASIZES WATER POLUTION AND HOW THE ORIGINAL SHORELINE RUNS THROUGH THE GIVEN SITE.

THE FOLLOWING SHOW AN ANALYSIS ON THE SURROUNDING AREAS OF THE GIVEN SITE AND THE SITE ITSELF. THIS INFORMATION IS TAKEN TO FURTHER THE DEVELOPMET OF THE OVERALL FORM OF THE CLIMATORIUM.

THESE MODELS SHOW THE INTERIORS OF THE CLIMATORIUM AND HOW THE HISTORY BEHIND THE CITY HAS ALTERED THE GROUNDS OF THE SITE.

WITHIN THE SECTION MODEL, IT IS SEEN HOW THE CLIMATORIUM INTERACTS WITH CHANGED GROUND.
