5 common mistakes made when disavowing links It has already been stated that Penguin 4.0 is real time which makes it very important to diligently monitor backlinks and do away with the bad ones immediately. After analyzing many campaigns which were created in the SEMrush Backlink Audit tool, here are some common mistakes that were found. These are related to how SEO’s disavow links and most of them did not comply with the Search Console rules.  Not adding “domain” in front of the domain name when disavowing links from the whole domain- Google only recognizes lines that have the HTTP or domain in the beginning.  Making use of quotation marks in the beginning of a line- using quotation marks at the beginning may lead to Google ignoring a line  Not correctly formatting a file- using an incorrect line separator in some tools may result in multiple data being merged into a single line. This will lead to Google not recognizing a file correctly and apply disavow rules  Including only URLs in disavow files- It is always better to disavow an entire domain

 Forgetting to use hash tag (#) on comments- It is not always necessary add comments to yours disavow files but if you decide to do so make sure that it does not prevent Google from parsing your file
