Brother Dale Long won the BBBS National Big Brother of the Year Award in 1998 and Brother Sylvester Fulton was named National Big Brother of the Year in 2006. After winning the BBBS award in 1998, Brother Long suggested a formal partnership between Alpha Phi Alpha and the Big Brothers Big Sisters. Brother Long is a BBBS of North Texas board member.

Prior to his receiving the award, the District was recognized for moving two levels from Academic Emergency to Continuous improvement as designated by the Ohio Department of Education. During his four years of leadership, Brother Mack also has worked to move the District’s attendance rate from 86 percent to 92 percent; and move the graduation rate from 52 percent to 79 percent. A Reading Jamboree was developed, which yearly draws 5,000 people from the community to gain an understanding of the importance of reading. Some of the educational options developed under his leadership are an academic magnet academy, early college high school, single gender schools (boys and girls), design technology high school, an alternative school for suspended students, and a leadership academy for aspiring administrators. Some of Brother Mack’s other awards include Dayton’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) Educational Leader award, AFL-CIO Regional Labor Council Community Service Award, Heart of Gold Award from Eta Phi Beta Sorority, Top Ten African Male in Dayton Award and the KingTisdell Cottage Foundation Beach Institute Education Award. Brother Mack is a member of Theta Lambda Chapter and is a life member of the Fraternity. He earned a Ph.D. degree in Administration and Supervision from Georgia State University in Atlanta. He also earned a M.Ed. in Social Science
Education from the University of Georgia, as well as a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Science Education from Savannah State University in Georgia.
Black School Educators Name Brother Percy Mack Superintendent of Year Brother Percy A. Mack, Ph.D., superintendent of Dayton Public Schools in Dayton, Ohio, was named Superintendent of the Year by the National Alliance of Black School Educators at their annual conference in Orlando, Florida. He was recognized for his work in improving the District’s academic achievement. The District’s focus on reading and mathematics led to growth, which

Brother Lowell Perry Appointed to Tennessee Lottery Board Brother Lowell Perry has been appointed to serve on the board of the Tennessee Education Lottery Corporation. Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen appointed Brother Perry to the Lottery Board to fill the unexpired term of Deborah Storey who resigned upon her appointment as Commissioner of the Tennessee State Department of Personnel. Brother Perry’s term will expire on June 30, 2008. His nomination was confirmed by the state’s General Assembly during the 2007 legislative session. “Lowell Perry is a passionate advocate for Tennessee's young people and will be a tremendous asset to the lottery board,” Gov. Bredesen said in making the appointment. “I'm pleased Lowell has agreed to serve on this important board and know that he will bring great enthusiasm and ideas to this new position.” Brother Perry is the Chief Executive Officer of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Middle Tennessee. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Administrative Sciences from Yale University; a degree in Advanced Management Education from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University; and a
