Throughout the course of this meeting, we will be diving deep into the theme of Adversity and Resilience in Surger y , as we hear from renowned speakers across a variety of surgical subspecialties and international institutions.

The conference programme features a multitude of exciting events to offer par ticipants the oppor tunity to gain insights into the challenging yet rewarding world of surger y

Our Speakers

Professor Mohamad Khalife is an Attending General Hepato biliar y Surgeon at the American University of Beirut Fellow of the American College of Surgeon, Royal College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Physicians After obtaining his medical degree from the University of Bucharest, Romania in 1985, he obtained his specialty degree in general surger y from the American University of Beirut Lebanon in 1991 He completed his fellowships in London hospitals with a special interest in Vascular, Cancer and Liver Transplantation surger y. at Watford, St. Thomas, King s College, Royal Free Hospital, University of London

In 1991 Professor Khalife went back to Lebanon where he chaired the division of General Surger y and was appointed as the Director of the Liver Transplant and Hepato Pancreatico Biliar y Unit at the American University of Beirut Medical Center At that time he had performed the first liver transplantation surger y in the region and pioneered many other major surgical techniques

Under his terms as Minister of Health, Lebanon launched its first ever structured public health ser vices, inaugurating a network of accredited primar y health care centres in addition to opening over 20 public hospitals. Professor Khalife has also played a role in setting up a new registr y for quality and pricing of pharmaceuticals in Lebanon under a major reform plan Another considerable achievement has been the adoption by the Lebanese government of a health reform plan that guarantees a mandator y public national health insurance system to ever y citizen and for the first time, Professor Khalife launched an official National Cancer Registr y NCR in Lebanon. Today Professor Khalife is an attending general surgeon at the American University of Beirut Medical Center, he is the Head of Division of General Surger y, Director of Hepato biliar y and Liver Transplantation programs at AUBMC

Professor Javier Gallego completed his degree in Medicine at the Universitat de Lleida, Spain, and the Complementar y Internship in Cardiothoracic Surger y at the Hospital Santa Maria, in Lisbon in 2008. He is interested in minimally invasive techniques, having vast experience in the area of video assisted thoracoscopy, where he contributed to simplifying the surgical management of Hyperhidrosis, having treated over 1000 patients

In 2008 Professor Gallego applied for the European Board of Cardiothoracic Surger y examination and was accepted as a Fellow of the European Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surger y. He contributed to the introduction in Por tugal of innovative techniques in the area of the lung, such as the video assisted single por t approach or video assisted thoracoscopy treatment with CO2 insufflation

During a fellowship in 2014 at the SANA Her tzchirurgie Centrum, in Germany, he learned minimally invasive techniques for the endoscopic treatment of mitral valve disease and atrial fibrillation by thoracoscopy, having helped to implement these pioneering techniques in Por tugal In 2015, he presented his Doctoral Thesis on minimally invasive surgical treatment of cardiac tumours, obtaining the classification of CUM LAUDE

He was accepted as a member of the American College of Surgeons, obtaining the degree of FACS Fellow American College of Surgeons and in the same year he was proposed to be a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology, FESC

Rober t A Cowles, MD is a Professor of Surger y at Yale School of Medicine Dr Cowles obtained his undergraduate education at the University of Pennsylvania and his medical degree at Temple University He completed a residency in General Surger y at the University of Michigan, in Ann Arbor, and spent two additional years pursuing laborator y research which was suppor ted by a training grant from the NIH and by a research grant from the American College of Surgeons

Dr Cowles then obtained his pediatric surger y training at the Morgan Stanley Children s Hospital at Columbia University in New York City Professor Cowles practises the full range of paediatric surger y. He performs life saving surger y to correct biliar y atresia in babies, an other wise fatal congenital defect, and works with a multidisciplinar y team to manage patients with shor t gut syndrome and intestinal failure

Dr. Cowles, who Connecticut Magazine has listed as one of the Top Doctors in the state, became an associate professor of surger y paediatrics at Yale School of Medicine. He also directs a research laborator y focused on the ability of the intestinal tract to recover from injur y He has contributed toward the development and refinement of surgical techniques that have eliminated the need for transplants in young patients with shor t bowel syndrome and biliar y atresia

He has been a Program Director of Paediatric Surger y Fellowships both in New York and now at Yale University with an interest in competency in surgical education

Profe or Gha an Ab Si ah MBChB, FRCS Plast - Ke no e

Dr Ghassan Abu Sittah is a British Palestinian Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon He completed his medical education at University of Glasgow in the UK

After completing his Specialist Registrar training in London he under went 3 fellowships. He did a Fellowship in Pediatric Craniofacial Surger y and a Fellowship in Cleft Surger y at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Kids and a fur ther fellowship in Trauma Reconstruction at the Royal London Hospital In 2011 he was recruited by the American University of Beirut Medical Center.

In 2012 he became Head of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surger y at the AUBMC and in 2015 co founded and became director of the Conflict Medicine Program at Global Health Institute at the American University of Beirut. He continues to be a Senior Clinical Lecturer at Queen Mar y University of London He ser ves as a reviewer at the National Institute of Health Research NIHR UK and is on the Board of Advisors at its Global Research Group on Burn Trauma.

Professor Ghassan Abu Sittah has published extensively on war injuries including a medical textbook, Reconstructing the War Injured Patient He has worked as a war surgeon in Iraq, South Lebanon and during the 3 wars in the Gaza Strip His work was featured by numerous newspapers and media outlets notably La Monde, The Independent, Telegraph, BBC and CNN.

M . Tafad a Mandi an a MB BCH BAO FRCSI

Ms Tafadzwa Mandiwanza is a Zimbabwean Irish neurosurgeon who completed her undergraduate medical degree, MB BCH BAO, at University College Cork in 2005 She then under went neurosurgical training in Dublin and Cork, obtaining the FRCSI Neurosurger y in 2019. She completed a subspecialty fellowship in Paediatric Neurosurger y at Great Ormond Street Hospital in September 2021.

She commenced a Consultant Neurosurgeon position at CHI Temple Street in December 2021 and is the first female Paediatric Neurosurgeon in Ireland.

Her interests include spinal dysraphism, management of complex tone par ticularly Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy, management of hydrocephalus, neuro ocology and endoscopic neurosurger y She has developed an interest in Quality Improvement and Leadership with a diploma from the Royal College of Physicians She strongly believes that ever y person deser ves respect and kindness That is the ver y least she can do for the children and parents in her care

Professor Fergal Malone worked as a consultant in high risk obstetrics in Boston and New York for 13 years prior to returning to the Rotunda in 2005

Since then, he has been responsible for many notable innovations in Irish obstetric practice, including the first open fetal surger y for fetal abnormalities, the first laser surger y for twin to twin transfusion syndrome, and

the implementation of a national first trimester screening programme for fetal abnormalities, such as Down syndrome

He provides advanced obstetric ultrasound and all forms of prenatal diagnosis, including amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling CVS , fetal blood sampling, and fetal treatment procedures, such as laser surger y for twins and fetal transfusions.

He is an acclaimed international researcher in new obstetric technologies, including screening for fetal chromosomal abnormalities, using ultrasound, blood tests and non invasive prenatal testing NIPT using fetal DNA in the maternal circulation

Mr John Conneely is a consultant hepatobiliar y surgeon, appointed to the Mater Hospital in 2015

He graduated from the National University of Ireland, Galway in 2000 and subsequently completed his surgical training under the auspices of the RCSI He finalised the higher surgical training programme in general surger y in 2011

Mr Conneely under took a fellowship in minimally invasive surger y and bariatric surger y at the University of Toronto, followed by the completion of a two year fellowship in abdominal transplantation and hepato pancreato biliar y surgical oncology at Toronto General Hospital, where he subsequently worked as a consultant His sub specialty interests encompass the entire spectrum of foregut and hepato pancreato biliar y surger y, both in the oncology and non oncology settings.

He is passionate about the value of minimally invasive surger y in ever y context and has trained extensively in the field Mr Conneely is committed to developing excellent minimally invasive surger y ser vices and to the development of metabolic and bariatric ser vices

Ms. Anna Heeney graduated with honours from University College Dublin in 2007 She subsequently entered the basic surgical training programme under the auspices of RCSI She under took a 2 years laborator y based MD in gastrointestinal physiology before entering the higher surgical training programme in which she sub specialised in breast surger y

She was awarded the Cer tificate of Completion of Training in 2020 Following this accreditation she travelled to the Royal Marsden Cancer Centre in London, where she under took a fellowship in Oncoplastic

Profe or Jame O Neill

Professor James O Neill is a consultant in Otolar yngology, Head and Neck Surger y at Beaumont Hospital In 2001, James Paul O Neill became a graduate of The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland RCSI winning both the RCSI Council Medal and the Dr Jim Mahon Medal for Medicine

His postgraduate studies included a Doctorate of Medicine in Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer RCSI , and Masters degrees in Business Administration from UCD and Medical Education from Queens University.

He was appointed Specialist Registrar in Otolar yngology in 2006 and completed his Otolar yngology Intercollegiate in 2010 That year he began a two year fellowship in Head and Neck Surgical Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. In 2013 he was appointed Consultant Otolar yngology Head and Neck surgeon in St James Hospital, Dublin

In 2014 he was appointed Professor of Otolar yngology, Head and Neck Surger y at Beaumont Hospital RCSI He has published multiple research papers, book chapters and two textbooks with Elsevier publishers on Head Neck disease and Otolar yngology

In 2018 he was awarded Consultant Trainer of the Year by The Royal Academy of Medicine of Ireland Otolar yngology Division and in 2019 the Silver Scalpel for outstanding contribution to postgraduate surgical training by The Irish Surgical Training Group ISTG

Helen Heneghan

Prof Heneghan is a graduate of NUI Galway, and completed basic surgical training in Galway University Hospital. In 2012 she was awarded a PhD in the molecular expression of breast cancer and obesity from NUI Galway Prof Heneghan completed the RCSI Higher Surgical Training scheme in General Surger y During her training, she spent two years in the Bariatric Metabolic Institute in Cleveland Clinic , Ohio. She completed a Bariatric Fellowship in the UK Chester, Liverpool She has co authored 60 publications in peer reviewed journals and has written 5 book chapters on the topics of bariatric and endocrine surger y

M . Grainne Colgan

Ms Grainne Colgan graduated from Trinity College Dublin in 2000 and now works as a Trauma Or thopaedic Surgeon in Mater Hospital and Cappagh National Or thopaedic Hospitals Dublin. After finalising her Higher Surgical Training in Or thopaedic Surger y, she completed a novel interface fellowship in hand and wrist surger y with both Or thopaedic and Plastic Surgeons, in Dublin She under took visiting fellowships in paediatric hand surger y in Texas Scottish Rite, Dallas and the Great Ormond Street Hospital, London. She also e La Main, Paris specialising in the surgical treatment of spasticity cerebral palsy, and surgical reanimation of the upper limbs in spinal cord injur y

Mr McCar tan graduated from Trinity in 2004 He conducted extensive research on the molecular biology of breast cancer, obtaining his PhD from RCSI in 2011 In September 2017, he commenced as a Consultant Breast and General Surgeon at St Vincent s University Hospital Mr McCar tan s sub specialist area of interest is oncoplastic breast surger y having completed international fellowships in oncoplastic and reconstructive breast surger y at the University Hospital of South Manchester in the UK and in breast surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre in New York He also holds post graduate diplomas in statistics and health economics

Profe or Tom Gallagher MS MCh FEBS FRCSI FACS

Prof Gallagher graduated from medicine at RCSI with honours in 2003 He under took his formal postgraduate surgical training under the auspices of RCSI, and was admitted as a fellow in 2014 FRCSI Prof Gallagher is a member of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons and the International Hepato Pancreatico biliar y Association Mr Gallagher was also awarded a fellowship of the European Board of Surger y FEBS in Transplantation in 2014 . In addition to his general surgical training, he under took fur ther specialty fellowships in Hepatobiliar y and Transplant surger y in the University of Hong Kong, the Royal Infirmar y of Edinburgh and finally in Nor thwestern University, Chicago

The Pillar Centre is located in the Mater Misericordiae Wing, Level 3. The best entrance to use is the Mater Misericordiae entrance on Eccles St When you enter, turn left. Take the J Lift to Level 3. Exit lift, turn right and proceed down the corridor, take the second right and the first left after the stairs to arrive at the Pillar Room.

If coming from the car park Take the A lift up to Level 1 Turn right when you come out of the lift. Continue down Hospital Street the main corridor . Continue walking past the Eccles St exit and the G lifts and turn left Continue walking to the end of the link corridor and enter the Misericordiae Wing. Take the right after the H lift , proceed to the end of the corridor and take a left Take the J Lift to Level 3.
