PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Water Shortage on the Colorado River – What it Means to You

F

all Is here! Temperatures are down, kids are back in school, and our desert is so green due to all the monsoonal rains! Oh, and did I mention weeds? That will have to be a topic for another day. We have been very fortunate in the amount of rain we received this year. Most of our reservoirs are at or near capacity. But sadly, not the ones that matter most! Recently ALCA had Jeff Lee, Water Conservation Specialist for the Town of Gilbert, host a seminar to discuss the “Shortage on the Colorado River” and what this will mean to most of us. Dwight Faires As Jeff explained, 2021 ALCA President currently, A Tier 1 Shortage for the Colorado River has been confirmed for 2022. This will affect what we all do from maintenance to new installs. The 20-year drought that we have experience has left Lake Mead at 32% and Lake Powell at 33% capacity. Due to the lack of snow fall in the Colorado river watershed which feeds these large reservoirs both are now at a structural deficit. Simply put, we are taking more out of them than we add. This year’s monsoonal rains did very little to add any relief to them. Add to this the huge increase in demand – more people, more agriculture and other pressures and effects. Climate is trending hotter, drier. Winter rains and snow pack well below historical averages. There is a Drought Contingency Plan (DCP) that will affect the seven basins states that rely on water from the Colorado River. We are currently in a Tier 0, voluntary cut backs. We will be moving to a Tier 1 next year as I previously mentioned. Tier 2 that is predicted in the near future will affect municipal water supplies but not what they can deliver. Most urban water suppliers have multiple sources of water and can mitigate shortages from the Colorado River. Simply, the less pressure we put on the alternate sources and the river will give us more time for snow pack to once again do its job. I Pray! Going forward, do your part to conserve. Companies performing maintenance, inspect your irrigation systems. Fix leaks! Study and understand your soil types. This one is huge. Different soils require completely different water cycles. Work to water less frequently but deeper. Know your plant material and water accordingly. If your properties have high water use plants, consider working with your clients and getting them changed out to more drought tolerant plant materials. Look, a revenue generator! If you are designing and installing new landscapes, push for more arid style plantings. If you have never read the AMWUA Guide for planting in the southwest, they have great ideas for plant selections and this will help save water. Tucson has

4

for many years required water harvesting, learn how to do this and get your clients on board. This too is a great way to increase the bottom line by adding this to your designs. If we all start doing our part we could delay stricter restrictions. Plans are in place to mandate water conservation. Each municipality will react differently in response to elevated Tiers or Stages. Get to know what each will require based on your geographic area of work. The Arizona Department of Water Resources (ADWR) will be

the driving force to elevate or decrease the Tier restrictions. In closing, let us all be leaders in this endeavor to conserve. Be smart, be educated and stress to your clients the importance of saving our water resources. Capitalize on this drought crisis where you can but most importantly, DO YOUR PART! Thanks for reading and until next time. Dwight Faires President

CEO’S MESSAGE

Train to Retain

C

an you believe it is time to gear up for 2022? Now is the time to define your priorities to start the year on the right foot. The number one issue facing our industry is the lack of labor. This isn’t a new phenomenon as companies have struggled to recruit and retain workers for the past decade or longer. ALCA is here as a resource to offer trainings that build the skills of your employees to improve productivity and workforce retention. You go to considerable trouble and expense to identify, interview, and hire great employees for your organization, so retaining them should also be a top priority. Employees who are offered training opportunities feel valued and supported, resulting in increased retention.

ALCA is here to help your company Train to Retail!

• ALCA Certified Irrigation Technician (ACIT) – Consists of a three-day training including hands-on activities focused on the optimization of water usage and the efficiency of existing irrigation systems. • Sustainable Landscape Management (SLM) – Certified individuals increase their knowledge and skills to employ practices Judy Gausman that strive to preserve limited and valuable ALCA CEO natural resources such as water, and reduce waste generation by encouraging the maturity of plant material that promote a healthier and more efficient landscape. ALCA will continue to hold online interactive Zoom as well as in-person trainings for the upcoming year. Since we started providing Zoom workshops, we have found that a number of companies create a culture of learning together by providing space in their businesses where their employees meet as a group and Zoom into the ALCA workshops as a team. Missed a workshop and it’s not available or convenient during your work schedule? ALCA is now providing the opportunity for on-demand recordings for ACLP and SLM. You will have the opportunity to watch the workshop as an individual or as a team within a seven-day period at your convenience. Just call the ALCA office at (602) 626-7091 to order the workshop. As you start your planning for the New Year, remember to include ALCA as your resource to help you Train and Retain.

Attending educational workshops and earning certifications awards workers who attend and pass industry exams. Students will be introduced to proper horticultural practices so that they understand, recognize and employ sustainable practices. They can become role models and a valuable source of information for their co-workers and employers. As an employer, certifications can help you identify candidates who demonstrate the skills and knowledge you need, develop employees’ knowledge, and maintain your competitive edge. To the business community, certifications provide verification of skills and knowledge based on generally accepted guidelines as a landscape professional. Explore the three certifications that ALCA offers. Plan your training strategies for 2022 and prepare for your workforce needs. Sincerely, • Arizona Certified Landscape Professional (ACLP) – Educational Judy Gausman program covering 10 topics for those aspiring to be a professional landscaper.

rass in the Desert? Why, Yes! Wherever people live and play, there is a need for grass! COVID has taught us a lot of lessons, (most of them we hope to never repeat), but one of the lessons that resonates with our industry, people more than ever, want to be outdoors. They want fresh air. They want to connect with nature. They want to live a healthy lifestyle. For anyone with small children or pets, that means natural grass under their bare feet! Literally! The pandemic brought better than expected sales to the sod industry last year. The pandemic helped increase the rounds of golf, which in turn, created a demand for sod repair work and upgrades to golf courses. Sports fields are increasing in demand as youth sports are at an all-time high. With a little extra time spent at home for many people, homeowners began to remodel and rejuvenate their living spaces, inside and out. Natural grass saw a huge resurgence as people realized that life outdoors is more pleasant with cool grass underfoot.

As we face record drought and record heat, many people feel that grass has no place in the desert, but the reality is, if people are going to live in this desert, then the responsible use of grass will be a part of our lives. How do we balance the use of grass while saving water? At Evergreen Turf, our first priority has always been to help our customers find the best grass for their specific needs. Evergreen grows more than 10 different grasses, just for Arizona, each with its own specific use to ensure the success of our recreational space in the Sonoran Desert. TifTuf has made a splash the last few years. After rigorous testing in Arizona and California, we can confirm that it is the most drought tolerant bermudagrass on the market today. You will begin to see it’s use on golf courses and sport fields first. We are beginning to see homeowners request TifTuf as they hope to lower their water bill by using this grass. As landscapes and trees mature, we see shade lines extending into grass areas. No grass can tolerate 100% shade in Arizona, but TifGrand and Palmetto St. Augustine both tolerate as little as 4-6 hours of sunlight. The right grass for the right application! Midiron is still king of our landscape grasses, the main reason, it is the easiest grass to maintain. The easiest to overseed, and the best transitioning grass from overseeding. It can be mowed at 3 inches or half an inch, it is drought tolerant and produces very little thatch. Tifway is still the standard for sports turf and golf course fairways Arizona. A durable hybrid that makes a great playing surface for athletes grown on soil or sand. Tifgreen, once the standard for golf course putting greens, it is now used for high quality fairways, home lawns and even a few, low use sports fields. Honorable mention: Other grasses that have specialized uses are MiniVerde Ultra-dwarf, TifEagle Ultra-dwarf, TifDwarf, and Kurapia. Evergreen Turf was established 22 years ago right here in Arizona. We now have operations in New Mexico, Southwest Texas, and California. No matter which of our farms you deal with, you can be sure that we will help you choose the right grass, for the right location, grown the right way! And the Green Grass Grows all Around, all Around Article provided by Cindy Odgers

T

he overseeding process is complete, the seed has germinated well and it is time to transition into maintenance of the turf for the winter. There are three key components to keeping a healthy lush green lawn through the winter: Mowing, Watering, and Fertilizing

Mowing:

• The first mowing should occur at the 10th to 14th day after germination when the seedlings are two to three inches tall. • Follow the 30% rule for mowing—never remove more than 30% or 1/3 of the leaf at each mowing. This will keep you from pulling out your new young seedlings. • A rotary mower can be set to mow at 2 1⁄4” to 2 3⁄4”. • A reel mower on higher quality turf can mow the turf at 1” to 1 1⁄2”. • Grass should be mowed when dry, with a mower having sharpened blades, kept sharp and frequently sharpened to ensure good cuts. • Remove the clippings during the first mowing. Repeat the mowing when the grass grows about one inch above the set level.

Watering:

• Approximately 14 days after installation, and after the first mowing, it is time to switch up the watering schedule. The schedule designed to help germinate the seed is not the same needed to maintain established grass. You can begin watering your lawn once a day for eight to ten, up to 15 minutes. • The key now is to water deeply and efficiently. Thirty minutes after watering, the soil should be wet six inches deep. To prevent runoff and pooling, add intervals and reduce time. If there is a dry area, adjust the sprinkler heads accordingly. • After four weeks you can limit the watering to three times a week or less, up to once every three to ten days. It could change according to the temperature variations in your area. • Water established turf in the early morning, when water pressure is high and evaporation is less. • If footprints stay in the grass for more than five minutes, it’s time to turn on the sprinklers. A bluish grey tint also indicates stress and lack of water. • If you have ET or ‘Smart’ controllers, change the setting to “cool season grass”. This will take care of watering your winter lawn until late next spring.

Fertilizing:

• Your winter lawn will require fertilizing, just like your summer lawn. • Two weeks after seedling emergence, fertilize with ammonium phosphate (16-20-0) at 5 lbs./1000 ft2.

THE ALCA INFLUENCE

• Always water immediately after applying fertilizer to prevent foliar burning and to ensure the fertilizer moves into the root zone. • To keep your winter lawn at its best, fertilize every four to six weeks with a complete fertilizer. • If iron deficiency becomes a problem, use a product containing iron that is chelated or chemically formulated to work well on our high pH soils. Some products containing iron may stain concrete or cool decking so be careful during application. • On occasion problems may arise.

Troubleshooting:

• Over-fertilization and/or over watering tend to weaken your turf’s root system and cause it to become weaker over time which in turn can increase a likelihood of frost damage, disease occurrence, and necessitate extra mowing. • Mow winter lawns when grass is dry to minimize spread of disease. By wounding the plant through mowing, while it is wet you increase the likelihood of fungal infection. In addition, you increase the likelihood of spreading the fungus on the blades and tires of the mower and on your shoes. • Do not water at night. • Winter grasses do not have thatch build up requiring thinning or removal. • A healthy lawn will push out weeds and keep them to a minimum. The best defense against weeds is to have a good dense stand of grass. Hand pull weeds if possible. Otherwise, there are a number of excellent chemical controls on the market. • We are fortunate to have very few winter grass related insect problems in Arizona.

ALCA WORKSHOPS Soils & Fertilizer

In August, Jackie Lyle and Shannon Scott from AAA Landscape each taught one session of ACLP Soils & Fertilizer concurrently to online and in-person students. Over 70 students from all over the state were able to learn about common soil challenges in our area. They learned how to assess soil and how to maximize plant health through feeding the soil and watering appropriately for the soil type. They also learned how to amend soil and calculate fertilizer application rates.

ACLP Irrigation

On September 16, a limited number of in-person students participated in the ACLP Irrigation workshop held in the ALCA office, conference room and outdoor landscape. Doug Donahue with Ewing delivered the main presentation and students received a foundational knowledge of irrigation components and systems. Students were then split up into smaller groups where they got hands-on in the break-out sessions: pipe & sprinklers presented by Margaret Saulsby with RainBird; valves and multi-meters with James Carr of BrightView; and controllers with Brandon Grimes of Rain Bird. This workshop is one of the ten required to receive the ACLP certification but is also the pre-requisite to attend the ALCA Certified Irrigation Technician (ACIT), next held in November. If you missed it, call ALCA and ask about taking the course virtually to meet the requirement. It takes a big crew to teach irrigation and we thank the dedicated volunteers who stepped up to teach this workshop.

ACLP Tree and Shrub Pruning

On August 26, Glenn Fahringer with Earth Care “For All That’s Green”, Inc presented the ACLP Tree & Shrub Pruning workshop to a mix of online and in-person students. Glenn provided basic plant biology as it pertains to pruning, decay, disease and wound closure. Safe use of basic pruning equipment was discussed. The five different types of pruning were discussed: crown cleaning, thinning, elevating, reduction and restoration/ rejuvenation pruning. Students viewed videos demonstrating tree pruning and shrub renovation pruning. Student comment – “Glenn’s passion for trees and their care was inspiring. I appreciated Glenn adding his personal experience and take on certain topics that can only be gained by doing.”
