VISION

The Olympics of Culture World Culture Festival is a global event series of epic proportions, which has drawn millions of people from all over the globe to celebrate the human family. “The purpose of the World Culture Festival is to send a message that the whole world is one family and we can all coexist with our differences. It is an opportunity for leaders from all segments of society—business, politics, religion, academia—to come together and renew their vision to work for the common welfare. The festival provides a platform for the preservation of local and indigenous traditions through music and dance as well as the opportunity for everyone else to relish and enjoy. This is a movement for the revival of universal human values of love, compassion, and friendliness.” — Gurudev, Founder of the Art of Living and the International Association for Human Values

In this book, you’ll find inspiration and enjoyment through notes from various leaders in the U.S. and abroad, side by side with visually stunning spectacles of global performances. For a video overview, visit aolf.me/wcf-video

A Landmark event in an Iconic venue The vision behind the National Mall Since its founding, the National Mall was set apart as a venue that embodied the ideals of democracy. The city architect, L’Enfant, envisioned a grand setting that was open to all, an egalitarian, novel stance for his day and age. The Mall was also built to house the monuments that enshrined the highest values of the nation—freedom and dignity of all people, honored in the Lincoln Memorial; and life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, as seen in the Jefferson Memorial. In the twentieth century, the Mall was revived as a civic stage, where people from all walks of life came to unite, to voice their views, and bring their issues to government. It was a meeting place of people, yet also a place where people met with the powers they elected.

VISION | THE OLYMPICS OF CULTURE

A New Vision for America and for the World The fourth World Culture Festival brought new elements to the inspiring vision of its location. Going beyond the unity of one nation, the festival stands testament to the unity of a one-world-family. Beyond race, gender, creed, or even country, it showed a vision of the whole world coming together in harmony. The festival presented a glimpse, both on stage and in the audience, where one could see this vision come alive before one’s eyes.

“Culture builds bridges, culture breaks down walls, culture brings a world together through dialogue and mutual understanding. Culture enhances unity and harmony among peoples and nations. And culture can create powerful exchanges between all global citizens…I commend Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar’s inspiring vision of unity, diversity, and global citizens. We need more of these very sorts of celebrations. We need more coming together, more peace and meditation, more cooperation, solidarity, and partnership.” H.E. Ban Ki-moon 8th Secretary-General of the United Nations, South Korea

VISION | A NEW VISION FOR AMERICA & FOR THE WORLD

“In America, our motto is ‘E pluribus unum,’ or ‘Out of many, one.’ We are fortunate to live in a nation where many cultures are celebrated and all have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This motto resonates with this group because it takes

all of us to build a brighter and safer future for our children around the world.“ The Honorable Neal Dunn United States Representative, Florida “In a world often marked by divisions, this festival highlights

our ability to celebrate diversity while embracing our common humanity.” The Honorable Dr. Katarina Barley Vice President, European Parliament

“We know that hundreds of thousands of people will join us this weekend here to celebrate peace and humanity. But we know that this celebration will also inspire in their hearts peace, kindness, and a love of the global community.” The Honorable Muriel Bowser Mayor of Washington, D.C., USA

“The big challenges of the day…cannot be effectively addressed in isolation. Bringing the world together has become even more important…It is important that in an interdependent world, we are always there for one another. The Art of Living has been an inspirational example in this regard.” The Honorable Dr. S. Jaishankar Minister of External Affairs, India

“It’s a true honor to be part of the World Culture Festival. This event is a historic celebration that embraces the diversity of culture, races, and religions that makes our world unique. Today we have the opportunity to stand together as a global community and send a powerful message to the world, the message of unity, love, and peace because it’s only together that we can shape a better future.” H.E. Mr. Mauricio Macri Former President, Argentina 19

America, India, and the Living Legacy of Non-violence While the World Culture Festival happens every five years or so, this year’s festival held a second significance for many. It was the 60th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s history-making “I have a dream” speech in the National Mall. And as Gurudev met with prominent leaders in the Black community, these echoes became all the more poignant. Martin Luther King Jr. had been profoundly influenced by Mahatma Gandhi and the values of non-violence. When Gurudev was invited to speak at Morehouse College, one of America’s great historically black colleges and universities (HBCU), the dean and Ambassador Andrew Young both shared how these values had touched their lives and gone on to become an integral piece of the civil rights movement and intellectual life in America.

A portrait commissioned by the Morehouse College hangs beside an image of Mahatma Gandhi

THE ROAD HERE

VISION | THE OLYMPICS OF CULTURE

“I started marching with Dr. Martin Luther King 63 years ago. We were on the Mall here in Washington D.C. Right now, look at the Art of Living! 500,000 people strong who believe peace is possible today. We’re here today, all races, all creeds, all colors, all shapes, all faiths, all coming together to understand the concept of harmony. I started to tell my good friend Sri Sri that maybe we need to change the name of the Art of Living to the Art of Living proof because we’re

proving that you can love, care, and have compassion.” Reverend Gerald L. Durley Former Dean of Clark-Atlanta University
