THE NORSE MYTH OF CREATION

The design brief was to select a subject (a creation myth) and make a stand alone exhibit / display / installation (size: 2 meters cube) to arouse the attention of the visitors and communicate the subject in an engaging manner. Final design should take into consideration the relationship of display, information and space. The myth chosen to depict was taken from the Norse Mythology.

According to the Norse Mythology in the beginning of time there existed only two worlds Niflhiem and Muspelhiem . A frost giant Ymir was born when the hot winds from Muspelhiem blew over Niflhiem and thawed the ice.. Ymir, the giant had turned evil and was so killed by Odin from Asgard when Ymir fell his blood made the oceans, the carcass made the plains and the mountains and his skull made the sky, and this is how the earth was created

Poster for the collective Exhibition of installations of depiction of different mythologies

The final exhibit was reached through a series of assignments which involved depiction of each myth using various tools like posters, scale models, plays etc. A1 size poster depicting the creation mythology

Ymir was born when hot winds from MUSPELHEIM blew over the ice in Niflheim causing it to thaw and drip he was born from the venom that dripped from the icy rivers of ELIVAGAR. The venom from the rivers made Ymir evil (impure). The death of Ymir represents the taming of the wild and uncontrollable forces that must occur before creation can. It repesents the reshaping of the ugly, impure and chaotic into something beautiful, pure and orderly. Process 1(ideation) 2(construction)

The installation takes inspiration from Yggdrasil, an immense mythical tree that holds together the nine worlds in Norse Cosmology. The tree has three tiers which represent 4 of the nine worlds in the Norse Cosmology. The top tier is Asgard the realm of the gods The second tier is Midgard or middle earth The tier is split into two showing Ymir’s carcass on one side, showing how mountains were creates from his bones and the oceans with his blood. The third tier or the nether realm consists of Niflhiem and Muspelhiem the ice region and fire region. The tree itself shows a transformation from chaos and darkness to order and purity as black transforms to gold as the tree grows and frayed ends if the rope wrap around to create the tree that supports the worlds.

The brief was to upgrade the signage around the Department of Architecture of the University of Ferrara. The main objective is to create a signage that is uniform in the Via Neighborhoods like in Palazzo Tassoni, to make the signs easy to read and understand, visible even at modest distances and redraw them, paying particular attention to the shape of the pictograms and the body of the writing. Main point of this project, as anticipated by the title, is the redesign of the signs, trying to make it very characteristic and unique, different from all the other faculties

FERRARA BAKERY

FERRARA BAKERY

The tiny town of Ferrara, Italy has a variety of goods like wines, breads, pasta etc which can be found in only this city, these food items are known as the 17 pearls of Ferrara. Though highly appreciated the products are unable to compete with local product of other nations. Design intervention was needed to define a coordinated image of a product along with the district. As a result FERRARA BAKERY was created. The bakery specializes in italian breads but the main product or speciality of the bakery is the La Coppia bread which also is the logo of the bakery

LABORATORIO DI COSTRUZIONE DELL’ARCHITETTURA

Laboratorio di constuzione dell’archtettura was a workshop about architecture and construction materials. The brief was to create a modular structure for the student secretariat in the given area of intervention. The modular structure was to be constructed keeping in mind the following 1) The structure will have to be re-purposed after 5 years 2) The parts of the modular structure need to be pre fabricated and be limited by the size of available delivery truck sizes 3)The structure should be equipped to withstand the weather conditions of the area

PRODUCTION DESIGN Set Design for a short fiction film

GIRL, PRAKRUTHI, 15, New Delhi Born and brought up in Delhi, she has no siblings. She lives with her parents who are warm and loving and she has no complaints against them. They are both academics and her mother works at various NGOs. She confides in them quite frequently. Until a few months ago they lived in W Vihar Extt. They now live in a small apartment in Pragati Vihar, which is a government flat. Her parents are avid readers and own a lot of books, many of them second hand. She reads a lot, and likes science very much. She reads a lot of fiction and has recently taken to poetry. She also writes, and fancies herself as one being a great writer, like Franz Kafka, or Sylvia Plath. She likes to draw though she cannot draw well, and has taken a sudden very intense interest in music. Her parents encourage these interests and even arranged an art show of her drawings for her on her 14th birthday. She is quite confident and uncaring of appearances. She is childlike and innocent, and has been left relatively untouched by the concerns of adolescence, which seems to have hit her classmates with full force. She is not concerned with boys or dresses or make up, and almost scorns the girls in her class who are. She is curious and intelligent, but due to lack of exertion, only an above average student. Her parents, while worried about it, after discussing it with each other, have decided to intervene only if her performance drops below 84%, which it has not, so far. She has lots of friends but only two close ones. She gets annoyed quickly, and can get quite defensive. She is talkative, and quick to arrive at opinions, sometimes even if they are not well thought out. This can be quite off-putting to people frequently, but makes all the grownups (her parents’ friends, teachers, etc.) love her. The fact that she is so opinionated at such a young age is something that is also amusing to slightly older peers and adds to her a slightly unforgettable dimension. She also defends her opinions passionately, and is on the debating team in her school. She has hands with short clipped nails that sometimes have paint on them, or pen marks. She prefers to wear sport shoes or floaters most of the time, and t-shirts, jeans, pajamas and kurtas.

GENERICS: Tasteful parents, Upper middle class, 15 years old, An Only Child, Girl, Reader, likes science (creatively engages in it), likes to draw, slightly disorganized and messy, but clean, Socially aware (Takes an interest in world current affairs and so on), whimsical, slightly lost, Childlike, Playful

SPECIFICS: BED: The kind parents would buy for their only daughter who is going to live in the room for 18 years at least. SMOKE A4 SHEET with “The Perfect Story” written in beautiful calligraphy

BOY, ADARSH, 15 New Delhi He lives with his parents in the same Government flat complex where GIRL lives, in Pragati Vihar. His Father is an Income Tax officer, and his mother is a homemaker. His father is very quiet, whereas his mother is quite social and knows a lot of the other women in the society. He has an older brother, who studies very hard, in a conventional text-bookish sort of way. They both go to the same school. At school he keeps mostly to himself, though he has recently become very good friends with one of the boys who is a year older than him and has taken science, called Sidharth. He has always liked music but has recently been introduced to some very different music by Sidharth. This new friendship has also led him to start playing some small amount of guitar. He has also started spending time with Sidharth outside school, but cannot do this as often as he would like, because his mother does not approve. He feels resentful of his parents frequently, because they keep checking his rank in class and do not approve of his other interests, such as art and music. He also resents his brother, who he does not share any interests with, and who is always top of his class. He likes to read, but reads mostly science fiction and nonfiction. He has a keen interest in science, but hates the studying he has to do in school. He does well at school, but is still scolded at home by his mother, since he always just falls short of making it to the top ten ranks academically. All of these pressures and the frequent feeling of not fitting in at his school make him shy and nervous most of the time. He is quite confused about his own identity, and is at the point where he is trying to understand himself, his own interests, likes and dislikes. He has not yet gouged where he fits into the social fabric of school and amongst his peers. He has not yet found a group that he fits in with, but his new friendship with Sidharth is beginning to shape his identity, with the music that they play and listen to, and the arty friends that Sidharth has. This identification is one of the reasons why he has recently begun to resent his older brother so deeply. He does not like his parents’ approach toward himself and believes that they do not understand him well enough. Despite the anger, he justifies their behavior to himself by telling himself that this is their way of looking out for him. He doesn’t like certain characters who are friends of his mother’s because he feels they reinforce the idea that a child is as good as the marks they get in class. He has hands with bitten nails, and wears mostly floaters, shorts and t-shirts.

GENERICS: Upper middle Class, Two Boys’ shared room, very conventional middle class people draws very well, disorganized and messy, Serious and quiet, recently started playing guitar. 17 Year Old is very Text Bookishly studious, he scores very well in most exams etc. He liked to play football on the side, but has been playing less because of board exams pressure, he does not read at all, mostly just current affairs for competitive exams, extremely neat and organized

SPECIFICS: BED: The kind parents would buy for two sons who are going to live in the room for 18 years at least. DESK: The sturdy kind, which is used daily, as a study table I POD: Battered Looking, with earphones PHYSICS TEXTBOOK AND NOTEBOOK: 12th class, in which BROTHER is solving physics numericals

INHABITING FUTURE CITIES:

EVENTS IN THE FUTURE

Cities are a work in progress. While the tendency is to look at cities as vast, immovable juggernaut like entities, Cities are actually much lighter, ephemeral, and prone to change by individual actions. Two cities exist simultaneously, the top to bottom city of policy, government, civil bodies, signage and traffic systems, and the bottom to top city of colour co ordinated flowers in balconies, street art, vernacular beauty in structure, and the people inhabited lanes of the vast arterial network. Urban design and Street initiatives are an active area of engagement for future Exhibition and Spatial designers, which combine knowledge of narrative, story telling, art, activism and a nuanced understanding of citizens and end users. The course explores this realm as an active area for design intervention. To better inform our actions, we use a Design fictions approach, creating a vibrant, lived in view of the near future, and populate that future with ideas and scenarios to work within. Solutions developed during the course aim to migrate the current city towards this fictional utopia, or highlight concerns about fictional dystopias, allowing us to transition better from our current city context.. In this context the city of ahmedabad should be kept in mind witj the aim of the project to conserve and restore the Heritage of this city.

My project is a spin off or a result of the timeline in the next slide whic predicts that around the year 2050 the pol area has become an open and satisfied community who take pride in owning heritage homes. Small businesses flourish within their communities. Innorder to create work opportunities, promote tourism and create incentives for residents to stay, the government decided to promote the old city as a venue for events to promote culture and heritage. As a result in a few years ahmedabad becomes a hub for events like world peace conventions, international music festivals and events such as the one I have chosen to work on. As a result the event “Blast off to Mars” was created. One of the venues of the events is Ahmedabad old city which is now famous for its rich heritage which makes it ideal for a cultural exchange. The entitre event celebrates technology and the culture of Gujarat coming together. The event is called “Blast off to mars” here on Earth as it is an opportunity fo the people to live and experience life on Mars as it is.

NASA looking to boost participation By ANUSHKA SHAHLOT

March 13th , 2048 Humans have begun to create settlements on Mars and more people are recruited, trained and are being sent every year . But, since mission 11 to Mars failed due to technical issues causing the craft to explode mid flight, there has been massive unrest among the people scheduled to mars later along the next decade. To regain the confidence of the people in the mission to rehabilitate the red planet, NASA has decided to share the lives of the people rehabilitated at mars with the people on earth. This will happen as a travelling event going through 12 major cities of the world as a month long events where people will be interacting with the people on mars directly through NASAs own communication technology which enable communication across planets in real time. For the people on mars this will be year long exercise to learn from different cultures all over the world and take inspiration from architecture, food, art forms and technology for the new upcoming settlements on the planet.

EXHIBIT To conclude the project an Exhibit was to made which would project the relevance of the project for a coherent view of the combined future, with individual explorations and visualisations.. My Exhibit is an artifact from this fututre event, a ticket dipensing machine which dispenses tickets in return for coins. The machine is inspired from Gujarati baroque furniture. In the future when everything is probably virtual including money the idea behind using an old style ticketing machine was to let the attendees to have a physical relic to take back

Tickets dispensed from the machine ^ in exchange for coins . Coins are a medium of controlling traffic at a certain event.
