Ecce is an add-on device for the white cane of the visually impaired people (VIP). It increases their visibility and safety in traffic by attracting attention to the user. Its lights begin to blink in red whenever the cane is lifted. The product has been designed in consultation with VISIO and a group of visually impaired people from The Hague. Its development has lasted for over a year.

Selection of redesigned models. Prototyped and tested with the VIP. Selections based on recognition of which side is up and which down , overall aesthetics , and ease of handling and storing.
Final selection was made by discussing with two visually impaired men. They considered what would be the greatest shape usability-wise. We ended up with Caroline’s design (model on the right).
I made pre-engineering level technical drawings by hand and sent them to the Liverpool students of Mechanical Engineering. Wall thicknesses and all other details and restrictions had been taken into account, as well as all connections and part placements. To save space from other electronics, USB-C charging is implemented in the screw used to attach the top part to the bottom part.
The top part functions as the housing for the electronics, whereas the bottom is translucent and illuminates the device’s lights.
The parts in-between the cane and the device have several size options (by diameter of cane).
Dutch Design Week (Oct 2018) Design & Manufacturing of Boundary Object, Testing Setup & Exhibition Shelf, Visual Content for AR Application Ecce took part in an exhibition in Klokgebouw during the Dutch Design Week 2018. It was presented along with four other projects as boundary objects. During the week we tested different mechanisms for attaching the product to the cane by making the visitors simulate being blind. Screen capture from the testing video below.
More information on the next page.
This project demanded consideration for example about - how the testing prototypes would work and endure a week of use - minimizing possibilities to misuse and break the testing prototypes - ergonomic dimensions for the exhibition shelf - appealing looks of the shelf (something special) - accurate calculations

FollowMe Apr– -18) FollowMe is a device designed to tackle the problem of sexual harrassment in nightclubs and even on festivals. It is essentially a skinlike silicone device with a patch on top that sticks to skin smoothly. It can be placed anywhere on your body. When ever you experience sexual harrassment or feel otherwise unsafe you can press the only button the device has and it will signal the security team to follow you to offer help. The location system is based on an indoor positioning system (IPS).

This product was invented and designed by Mireia Muntané Martí and me.
Fokus is an add-on device for the bicycle. (Feb-Apr -17) Designed to tackle the problem of cyclists losing their focus when using their phones while riding. Primary function is simplified navigation but (by choice of the user) it also notifies you with an icon when you are receiving a call, message or an email from an important contact. You may also accept or decline a call, or control your music with the buttons on the product’s right side.
50% of bicycle accidents in The Netherlands involve smartphone usage
30% of all fatal accidents in the Nether1ands involved cyclists.
5-person team (I joined after 5 months of development)
Fokus is connected to its smartphone application where you can control what kind of information you want to see and manage with the device itself.
07:45
The app is connected to a map that includes all information relevant for cyclists, such as bike lanes and streets that are great to ride. The app determines your preferred route based on your selected parameters.
Furthermore it builds a community of Fokus users who can share their favourite cycling routes among each other.
ePaper Screen
As the device is trying to solve a problem by reducing loss of focus, its screen and indications are very simple yet understandable and unambiguous

“Cycling Safety of Expats in The Netherlands” questionnaire: – 205 replies, – 36,5% of participants said they would be interested in a device that would allow them to manage the most essential features of their smartphones without really handling them while cycling. These 75 are our target group. These statistics are based on those 75 people.

UNI
UNI is a conceptual alarm clock that not only wakes you up in a pleasant manner but also soothes you before going to bed. (Sep-Oct -17)
Mellow and calming athmosphere before going to bed – without your phone. The product offers several continuous ambient tracks and sounds from nature to choose and build your pre-bed soundtrack from..
Smartphones are a major issue in people’s lives nowadays. Staring at screens the whole day CALM DOWN through is not only bad for your eyes but can before bed using the removable affect your wellbeing in many ways.
speaker. It is used to control all features.
FALL ASLEEP PEACEFULLY by connecting the portable device to the wall clock. This makes the wall clock the sound source.
Sleep is perhaps the most important daily activity (along with drinking water) and unfortunately phone usage has a harmful effect on it too.
Using the phone before going to bed keeps your brains active for WAK E UP ENER GIZED . longer. This makes The backlit LCD Display adjusts brightness fa llin g a s l e e p gradually and wakes you up in a soothing manner. m o re d i f f i cul t and leads to s h o r t e r nights.
UNI consists of two main parts: a wall clock and a separatable device that together form a pendulum clock -like silhuette. Both music and alarm are controlled from the removable A part, which also functions as a speaker that you can take to any VOL room. It connects to the wall clock with a magnetic cable that charges the device’s battery. The wall clock is attached to a power outlet, functions as a night time speaker for falling asleep and waking up, as well as features the sunshine alarm.

PROTOTYPING & CRAFTSHMANSHIP
“TULI” LAMP SHADE (Feb – Apr, -18) Materials: quartersawn oak veneer, plainsawn oak planks, copper sheet, black-coated aluminium sheet Techniques used: general wood- and metalworking skills, veneer laminating wood-wood-metal, lap joint Designed and manufactured entirely by me. Tuli in Finnish means “fire” and is designed to give warm light to the apartment. Consequently the materials I chose were light oak and copper on the inside to reflect the warm-toned light bulb that when on resembles a glassblower’s glowing hot parison. The black-coated aluminium on the exterior represents burnt wood or even coal.

Wooden turntable
(Mar, -18)
Materials: poplar, beech, wood oil Techniques used: general woodworking skills, biscuit joinery, wood carving Designed and manufactured entirely by me. Consists only of wood and glue. The design has two moving parts: tone arm and and vinyl plate. The size and dimensions of the turmatable are determined in a way that a 7 single fits perfectly on top of the plate.
Process Technical drawings and manufacturing planning: calculations of thicknessess, drilling depths and other dimensions. Manufacturing.
“Nuit blanche slip-casted vase
(Jan, -18)
Materials: (polyurethane foam, gypsum,) porcelain Designed and manufactured entirely by me. Inspiration for this vase I got from 1920’s art deco. Designed to hold small but exquisite flowers as can be seen on the right page. As the vase was slip-casted, a part of the process was to create a mold where liquid porcelain was then poured. To make this mold, I had to first make a foam model of the vase itsel, and the bottom. This had to be done in two pieces or otherwise the part would have stuck in the mold.
