here’s no place like Long Island. Its beautiful beaches, magnificent golf courses, historic locations, and an abundance of artistic and cultural activity make it a popular destination for tourists and a great place to live for those fortunate enough to reside here year round. There’s also no time like the summer. Is there anything as enjoyable as a sun-splashed day or as refreshing as a cool summer breeze? And when you put together the pleasantness of summer days with all that Long Island has to offer, you have something truly special. Many vacationers travel great distances for the opportunity to enjoy some of the activities that we can enjoy every day. So whether it’s enjoying a fine seafood meal at one of the area’s world-famous restaurants, watching a few innings of a professional baseball game, catching some rays on a golden sandy beach, enjoying a boat ride on Long Island Sound as the cooling water mists on your face, relaxing to the sound of the waves from the Atlantic

South Shore Nickerson Beach Park, 880 Lido Boulevard, Lido Beach 516-571-7700 Nickerson Beach is one of Nassau County’s true gems, boasting a magnificent beachfront that has undergone an extensive multimillion dollar renovation in recent years. Activities range from beach volleyball to basketball and tennis, as well as a state-of-the-art playground. The playground is part of an area that also provides colorful basketball courts and a skateboard area. There are also swimming pools, picnic areas and, of course, the beach – a three-quarter-mile-long expanse of beautiful white sand and dunes. Wantagh Park, 1 King Road, Wantagh, 516-571-7460 This 111-acre park is one the oldest in the Nassau County parks system, and one of the most beautiful, bordered on the south by Flat Creek with East Bay beyond. case 150 acres of Long Island’s marine wetlands, including salt marsh, mud flat and tidal creek habitats. The park offers four basketball courts, one baseball field, six tennis courts, four handball courts and a one-mile jogging course.

he FDA advises consumers to protect themselves from the sun’s harmful effects. Spending time in the sun increases a person’s risk of skin cancer and early skin aging. To reduce these risks, consumers should regularly use a sunscreen with a SPF value of 15 or higher in combination with other protective measures such as: • Limiting time in the sun, especially between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. when the sun’s rays are the strongest. • Wearing clothing to cover skin exposed to the sun (longsleeved shirts, pants, sunglasses, and broad-brimmed hats) when possible. • Using a water resistant sunscreen if swimming or sweating. • Re-applying sunscreen, even if it is labeled as water resistant, at least every 2 hours. • Consumers should also be aware that no sunscreens are “waterproof” because all sunscreens eventually wash off. Sunscreens labeled “water resistant” are required to state whether the sunscreen remains effective for 40 or 80 minutes when swimming or sweating, and all sunscreens are required to provide directions on when to reapply.
