In the heart of Prague, always so full of noise and tourists who wander from street to street and square to square, we find Strelecky Ostrov. An island. Not only in the physical sense, but also in the metaphorical one, because this place comes as a piece of quietness surrounded by the typical bustle of a big city. Trying not to disturb the natural harmony, the small building that embodies the chapel emerges as a stone, pure in its materiality, irregular in its form and transmitting the sensation that its spaces came from a process of subtraction in it. These spaces aim to interact with the users and provide them the ideal conditions to find their peace. The entry to this space is made through a very low area, conceived to the man scale, where you can feel that dominate the space, as well as observe your own shadows, but then you move forward and leave your shadows and ghosts behind and at this moment the space opens toward a skylight pointing to the sky, and here you can finally rest without any distraction, just contemplating a natural light beam. Adjacent to this space there is a small room for contemplation accessed by a triangular passage that leads us to the city’s iconic rooftops. This room has panoramic view that is displayed through a long and slim window which only transmits this to whoever is sitting, providing the space to be lived in a slow and quiet way and not with the hustle and bustle of those potentially found standing.

The approach to this family house was based on trying to understand the differences and needs of each area in a house. It is understood that there are two major layers: The social area and the private area, although part of a whole, have opposite features. Thus the approach has been developed from the positive/negative relation standpoint between the two areas. The social area/ground level boasts an ample and continuous space, operating as a whole, featuring four cores. The movement is made along the outer walls. In opposition, the private area is the negative of the social area comprising closed spaces with no connection in-between. These spaces are accessed by the most private part of the house which contacts with the inner patio. In the most private part there is a moment of spacial drama, in which the house opens up gradually to the landscape allowing it to permeate the various spaces until it reaches the pool. As regards the location of the house, it stands out as an authentic two-level monolithic volume: The first level belongs to the social space, separating the house from the street. The second level, at a higher elevation, reveals itself to the landscape like a grand plateau.

The dance represents the greatest expression of elegance, agility and sensuality of human movement and while we are attending to a show of this performing art we can catch the power and the drama that the movement of one or more bodies have when walking through a rhythm creating various types of tensions. Therefore a dance school should not be dissociated of these characteristics and as a consequence the building for the dancing school in Matosinhos comes in the form of two volumes that touch each other causing the suspension of one over the other and at that moment of tension the entrance and the heart of the academy is generated. As we are dealing with a school of such a beautiful art at a visual level, this proposal tries to take advantage of this characteristic and instead of hiding between walls all this harmonious movement that is daily generated, does precisely the opposite by exposing the rooms to the interior of the academy, which allows all students to find inspiration and visual delight watching their colleagues. The idea of being able to observe the rooms generates all interior spaces and allows various types of visual relationships whether between spaces of the same floor, whether between spaces of different floors

In architecture all the senses are important, the places and the forms can be felt, listened, smelled and observed. However from all these senses, the one that gets in most evidence is certainly the sight. Thus, in this proposal is given the most importance to the visual relationships, starting with the volumetry of the building and going to the interior spaces of the apartments. The building starts by being a simple tower, with influences of the International Style, that suffers a fragmentation along its body, allowing the creation of panoramic patios with different directions. This deconstruction of a simple tower allows the creation of new collective spaces, intended to produce visual pleasure, which otherwise would be very difficult to achieve. The search for visual relationships extends to the interior of the apartments, where a connection is established directly between the living room, the kitchen and the laundry, allowing a strong interaction between its users, as well as an excellent lighting.

Location: Paris, Pont des Arts Year: 2014 AC-CA International Competition, Paris River Bar In collaboration with: Helena Calado and JosĂŠ Guerra

Since antiquity, champagne became a French trademark, known for being fermented in cellars, often accompanied with a sense of glamour and bohême. Clinging to these ideas and traditions, with a clear intention of avoid harm in any way the beauty of the landscape so characteristic of the Seine’s margins, we chose to hide the building, creating something akin to a cellar. This intimate space fits perfectly with the quality and refinement of such distinguished champagne. The program appears naturally in the ground, preserving the existing river sidewalk. With this in mind, we establish a clear intention of promoting a social space, where leisure and walking come together, thus giving it simply another shape and design. In short, the concept is not the appearance of the building, but the essence of its interior.

Location: Rome, Piazza dei Cinquecento Year: 2014 Archmedium Competitions, Rome Motorino Check Point In collaboration with: Ana Silva, Helena Calado and José Guerra Published at: arquitetura beta

The building works as a showroom for one of Italy’s most iconic creations in automobile industry – La Vespa. Located at a central point of arrival to the city of Rome, the Roma Termini Station, it acts as an open museum, clearly highlighted by its opening surroundings. Therefore, the project opens itself into the city, with a permeable and penetrable concept that exposes its structure, pursuing a deliberate resemblance with other notable constructions in Rome, such as the Coliseum and St. Peter’s Square. Furthermore, it is important to emphasize that the building enables the prolific unfolding, as well as its adaptation, in order to meet the needs in any location. With this in mind, we picture different sizes in order to please an “S, M, L, XL” system, that allows it to be easily adaptable to be built in other parts of the city. Regarding the program distribution, the project presents simple and intuitive solutions, where the services concerning bicycles and the respective parking are located on the ground floor, while the parking projected for the motorinos expands itself through the remaining floors, up to the top of the building.

Location: Oslo, Ă˜ya Festival Year: 2014 120 Hours Student Competition 2014 In collaboration with: Daniel Maia, Helena Calado and Rui Cardoso Published at: archdaily Honorable Mention

Embracing the park, looking over new experiences. Our goal is to design a sensible space that emphasises the role that nature can play in the city and commemorates the Oya festival, as well as creating opportunities to experience these in new and diverse ways. The structure is built into two major sections: The triangular top is elevated above the tree-tops to create a landmark in its environment and acting as a viewpoint for the park, the festival and the city skyline. The base is infused with the hill and the pavilion creates a peaceful space that resembles a garden maze, where we aim to incorporate an exhibition area promoting environmental awareness. The elements of this structure combined will look to be a beacon of experiences in the park and the festival, while promoting spaces for contemplation, celebrating social connectivity and connecting the people and the city of Oslo with nature.

Location: Geirangerfjorden Year: 2013 120 Hours Student Competition 2013 In collaboration with: Rui Cardoso Published at: afasia

Geiranger has a fairytale landscape with its majestic, snow-covered mountain tops, wild and beautiful waterfalls, lush green vegetation and the deep, blue fjord. With a landscape so rich and pure what we propose is something untouchable and as iconic as the landscape: a circle. A simple circle functioning as a cruise ship terminal. A landmark, a beautiful and iconic structure for the people and visitors of the Geirangerfjord. Thousands of people will land here in the summer and it is this ring that will engage them to the village. A floating platform will connect them to the dock. The dock is anchored to the landscape and to the terrain with a formal and natural gesture becoming a element of the villa, turning itself into the circle. It has a waiting room for passengers, trade, restaurant, bar, kayaks rental and energetic sustainable means allowing ships to be anchored without expending fuel.

The proposal marks on the Oporto city as a pure and simple object, framed on the massive essence of city. Invites people to it by invoking the motives of traditional tiles that create in the population subtle senses of nostalgia for tradition of meeting in the churches. This pure concrete body is based on lightness of a glass box eliminating the apparent barrier between the exterior and the interior, promoting thus the notion of continuity and a sense of welcome. The solidity of the structure is crossed by a cylinder of light, evoking the cohesion and unity of space as well as the individuals who attend. Different strains each floor make this structure distinct from each other, enhancing the versatility of the space. Through the use of blinds is achieved oscillation between large spaces or enclosed spaces adjacent to each other in a way that allows simple and unpretentious respond effectively to different situations. It is thus safeguarded the versatility of these spaces, increasing the potential for use of space.

Location: Rovaniemi Year: 2012 Archmedium Competitions, Northern Lights Observatory In collaboration with: Ana Silva, Helena Calado and Rui Cardoso Finalist

In order to establish a link between the city and the proposed work, we created a course that guides you to the Observatory of Aurora Borealis. Following this, comes a line that characterizes the entire project and is itself generating spaces. The building, situated in an intermediate elevation of the land, consists of only one floor, to thereby achieve the idea of growing of the terrain, rising from the earth, like an awakening to contemplate the Aurora Borealis. As a culmination of arrival and as an exception, there is a tower located at the end of the line.

A house. A number of customized elements to suit every taste. This is the theme for the standard town house in Porto – a House ID, where everyone can choose the house to suit their own purposes, selecting the number of modules, the type they want, the size, the colour. Since this is a type of housing fitting the Porto bourgeois town house style, with a rather narrow frontage and considerable depth, a pivotal role in the design is played by light, which is captured by the patios linked to each module. Each housing module establishes a relationship of privacy with the exterior, and has its own patio that guarantees light. In a period in which we are witnessing the gradual refurbishment of the Porto city centre, we sense that architects seem to have forgotten the tile: such an important and noble material, that defines the bourgeois town house. Our aim is to bring it back into use and apply it on both the main façade and the back. The house is also thought of as an interplay of addition and subtraction: addition to the building and subtraction from the exterior space, which aims to be an extension of the interior, creating living and leisure spaces, making use of elements from the construction of the house, such as tiles.
