Walter Sisulu University Notice from the Office of the Administrator Professor L.R. van Staden

WSU STRIKE: MANAGEMENT OFFER TO WSU STAFF The present labour strike has crippled the operations of our university since 23 July, 2013. Our 21,000 students have had no classes for four weeks and the consequence of ‘no work, no pay’ is impacting severely upon our staff. WSU is under Administration in a final attempt to stabilise and secure a viable future for this university. The progress made thus far cannot be compromised by granting an unaffordable salary increase. These issues have been clearly communicated to our staff and students through regular communiques over the past four weeks. PROPOSAL TO ALL WSU STAFF We request our staff to: 1. Accept a 4,25% pensionable salary increase for 2013, backdated to 01 January, 2013; 2. Accept the leave buy-out in terms of the 2009 agreement as read with the 2010 addendum. Staff who are willing to accept this offer are required to sign an undertaking in this respect. Signing will open on Wednesday 21 August, 2013 at 08:00 and will close at 16:00 on Thursday 22 August, 2013. This undertaking will lift the lockout and ‘no work no pay’ from the date of submission for those staff who accept this offer. Staff who accept the offer will start accruing pay from the date of submission of their undertaking. Staff will be required to return to work when called to do so by university management. Normal remuneration will commence from the date of submission of the undertaking and will be paid at the next salary run. Back pay in respect of the increase for the period 1 January, 2013 until 29 July, 2013 will be paid as soon as circumstances allow. Management remains open to its recent mediation proposal made to labour and will accept the outcomes of any independent fact-finding on the financial status of the university. An announcement on classes resuming will be made on Friday 23 August, 2013. We urge our staff to act in their best interests and in the interests of our students by accepting this final offer so that our university can return to its core business.
