Fans: Advertising & Souvenir By Donald Bull

Farandole dance to celebrate Quinquina Bretin on a folding fan, made by Chambrelent. Remember when you could go to the corner store on a hot day and get a free fan to cool yourself? Or when you went to church and found one next to the Bible in the back of the pew in front of you? Now, we step out of our air-conditioned homes, into our air-conditioned automobiles, and go off to the air-conditioned shopping center. But there are still those days when you sit on the front porch and watch the traffic go by while waving a fan to keep cool. Or perhaps you are going to an outdoor sporting event (not the cooled bubble-dome stadium), and you’ll need a hand fan. Although not as popular today, there was a time when merchants of all sorts had fan giveaway promotions to lure customers. There were even days at the baseball park dedicated to the fans by giving away fans on a hot day instead of bats or hats. Cruise ships handed them out to keep you cool on deck. You could buy a souvenir fan at the World’s Fair and at the bullfight. Everywhere you went in the summer heat, you could find a fan to keep cool—and those with advertising were usually free. Gorgeous folding fans with printed scenes sandwiched on a number of sticks dominate the colorful European fans with some exceptional late 19th century–early 20th century examples from railroads, theaters, perfume companies, cruise ships, restaurants and beverage companies. Some of the most interesting are those from the champagne houses that had wonderful designs created by popular artists of the time. The artists created advertising posters, and the same art was often used on the fans. In contrast, the North American fans are mostly cardboard die-cut fans and stick fans. They were cheap and usually ordered in large quantities that could be delivered quickly. In a review of the National Printing, Publishing, Advertising and Allied Trades Exposition in New York’s Grand Central Palace, the May 22, 1900 edition of the New York Daily Tribune noted, “Souvenir fans printed on an automatic press at the rate of fourteen thousand an hour were distributed last evening. The simplest fans to produce were stick fans where a printed piece of cardboard is stapled to a stick handle to grasp and wave. Unfortunately, many of these ended up with staples on the noses of pretty girls or stuck in a nice outdoor scene. The advertising was usually printed on the reverse side of a

stock design. To lure you into the soda fountain, the owner would have promotion days to give away fans with an enticing picture of a root beer float or a bowl of ice cream and of course, advertising on the back. Samuel W. Dunaway, The Reliable Druggist in El Centro, Calif., boasted in his advertising that his soda water was “the best that money can buy.” In his advertisement in the May 2, 1908, edition of the Imperial Valley Press, his soda fountain was promoted as “Best Seats in Town, Seats for Everybody, Get A Free Fan, Come Once and You Will Come Again.” Some merchants offered prizes via their fans. The fans were numbered, given away on a special promotion day, and a few days later, the winning number would be posted in the store window. If you went to the theater packed with hundreds of people, the body heat demanded the use of hand fans. In 1913, The Moving Picture World magazine reported that an advertising specialty firm was producing “Photoplayer Fans” featuring popular male and female stars on the front and advertising on the back. A theater could buy 500 of them for only $6.50.

The Moxie Company issued a fan annually for years featuring stars of the time on what is known as a thumb-hold fan. Fans can also be found advertising Pepsi, Coca-Cola, 7-Up, Orange Crush and a great variety of beers. In Europe, fans advertising apéritifs, cognac, liqueurs and other spirits were quite popular. For the ladies steaming under the hot hair dryer at the beauty parlor, a fan was a necessity. And the gentleman operating his tractor on a hot summer day was helped out with fans from Caterpillar Tractor, Buckeye Mowers, and other farm equipment firms. Also, we must not forget the children who could get fans while trying on Buster Brown Shoes. Hotels, airlines, department stores, pharmacies, grocers, furniture stores, banks, insurance companies and so many other entities gave away fans to keep you cool. But there was another fan that not only kept you cool but hopefully, kept you from fainting while attending a service—at the funeral home. They usually promoted stock scenes on the back, often religious, floral or patriotic. Some noted they had “Lady attendants” while others offered ambulance services or “prepaid funeral contracts.” The

reporter Elm wrote in his “After All” column in the December 12, 1954 edition of the Hutchinson News-Herald (Kansas): “Now another bit for this column of nostalgia concerns something I am not equipped to discuss. This is the cardboard fan which undertaking establishments used to distribute to churches for hot morning worshippers to use in attempting to cool off their immediate vicinity. The undertakers used to have fans for use in their own establishment, too, but most of them are air conditioned now—the establishments, that is. I just haven’t been to church recently and know nothing of ecclesiastical conditions. Maybe I should attend to learn the facts of life.” In closing, here’s a great story about fans at a baseball game as reported in the New Castle News (Pennsylvania) on September 1, 1966:

The next time you watch by Mike McLeod the movie, pay attention to when the Cowardly Lion tells Dorothy to “Read my medal; it says ‘Courage’!” Before and after the close-up of the medal, the Cowardly Lion is holding the medal in his hand; in the close-up, it hangs loosely against his chest.1 The Cowardly Lion costume Bert Lahr (Aug. 13, 1895- was made from actual lion The Cowardly Lion skins and weighed about 70 Dec. 4, 1967), the man in This medal in the shape of a cross with the word lbs. In addition, the set was lit with obviously just one cross and a slight pun on the word double intensive lights so it could be filmed in Technicolor. This made cross. In the book, instead of a medal the Wizard gave the the temperature on the set rise to 100 degrees at times. To give Cowardly Lion courage in the form of magic liquid—in other Lahr some breathing room—so to speak—small holes were cut into the costume to give him some ventilation.2 Lahr negotiated a salary of $2,500 for the six weeks of planned filming. He ended up working for six months on the movie during 1938 and 1939. The two highest paid actors in the movie were not Judy Garland or Margaret Hamilton, the Wicked Witch of the West. (They made $500 and $1,000 per week, respectively.) Ray Bolger, the Scarecrow, and Jack Haley, the Tin Man, earned the most at $3,000 per week,3 not bad in 1939 or today. 2918 20th Avenue • Valley, AL 36854 With a long career lasting from about 1929 to 1968 that Conveniently located off Exit 79 of I-85 spanned movies, television shows and the theater, Bert Lahr 334-768-8463 • Fax: 334-768-8464 also made famous commercials. was written by L. Frank Baum. It was made into unsuccessful silent movies in 1910 and 1925. In the 1910 version, Dorothy, the Scarecrow, Toto, and a cow and donkey (people in costume) were whisked away from Kansas to Oz by a cyclone while they hid in a haystack. A 12-minute version of it can be viewed on YouTube. When the “current” movie debuted in 1939, it met with critical acclaim. However, its $3+ million cost not surpassed and a profit made until the movie was released again in the 1940s. Eventually, television brought the movie home and made it a classic, airing it year after year. Ted Carlton of Utah, Julie Kimbrel of The Old School Antique Mall in Sylva, N.C., Dr. Scott and Carolyn Brown of Montgomery, Ala., Doug Tyler of Marietta, Ga., and Sherron Lawson of Roswell, Ga., correctly identified the Cowardly Lion’s medal. ----------------------1 The Wizard of Oz FAQ: All That’s Left to Know About Life, According to Oz, by David J. by Deborah Abernethy and Mike McLeod $440 (79 bids, 10 bidders): Steampunk 1889 Eye Dr. Scope Ophthalmometer Medical Tool Optometrist. Here’s an antique ya just don’t see every day! I believe it’s called an “Ophthalmometer,” which an eye doctor used over 100 years ago for examining a person’s eyes. The maker’s name is printed in the casting on the side and it reads: “F.A. HARDY & Co. MAKER CHICAGO”. The big domed shape part turns 360 degrees along with the two brass pointers/arrows in front of the plate full of numbers. Comes with some extra parts, some type of plates and some electrical parts. Measures just about 21 inches high x 20 inches long x 16.75 inches wide, and

on the numbered plate with the pointers it also reads: “Pat. DBA: An Ophthalmometer is an instrument to measure the size of a reflected image on the convex surface of the cornea and lens of the eye. It is used for determining astigmatism. This type of equipment is not seen every day in the marketplace but does not have a strong collector’s market. The same type of equipment has sold at auction from $50 to $225, so $440 is a good deal for the seller.

The platform bottoms appear to have some old finish—no makers mark that I can find but possibly by Andrew Hotchkiss & Sons of Sharon, Conn. (Photo: eBay seller hausdezign.) DBA: These circa 1850 skates are rare in the marketplace. It is hard to say whether the buyer or seller got a deal. I did find one similar pair of skates offered for sale on Etsy for $250; however, these were missing the straps. I have also seen similar skates selling at auction for upwards of $3,000. These are very attractive in design.

$455 (13 bids, 10 bidders): 1850 hand forged ice skates w/ wood platforms & button finials skating. We’ve been cleaning out our New Hampshire family estate. These were up in the rafters, and we almost didn’t see them, and now that everyone in New England is virtually snowbound, it’s a good time to make use of them. I’d date them to about 1850. The steel runners are hand-forged and have a fabulous decorative curled design, fastened with screws to what appears to be maple platforms. The runners are in very good condition without any cracks or breaks. The wood bases have holes drilled through the sides for leather straps, but I haven’t a clue if these strapped to your shoes back in the day or to boots. They measure 13.5 inches in length. The leather is old and was very brittle—I put some mink

Civil War COLLECTOR The

I can find neither of these exact images priced or previously sold with a quick search. Similar-sized, interesting images sold by specialist photographic auctions like Swann’s in NYC, Cowan’s in Cincinnati and Heritage in Dallas, generally with pre-sale estimate of less than $1,000 seem to average between $2,000 and $3,000.

By John Sexton

My neighbor wants to sell these Matthew Brady framed photos. We don’t know where to start, found your name online so we start with you. JS: Your two Civil War albumin photographs appear in very fine condition. The captions state that they are images used in the well-known Miller’s The Photographic History of the Civil War (1911). Albumin paper photography made from glass-plate negatives from the Civil War Era is quite common, and smallformat cartes de visite (CDVs) of soldiers can sell for as little as $10. Large-format photography with interesting content can be quite valuable. The image of the USS Saugus clearly shows a Dahlgren Boat Howitzer on the deck forward of the gun turret with crews standing about on the deck. Photographs of ironclads are not common, and this is a well-known monitor. Among the most famous pictures related to the Saugus is an April 1865 photograph taken by Alexander Gardner of the later hanged Lincoln conspirator Louis Payne, who is sitting against the gun turret. The other image shows a six-gun field battery with full accompaniment of mounted troops and caissons. The caption on this image states it was prior to the Battle of Chancellorsville, Va., but the image appears to be in the sandy coastal South.

Matthew Brady Civil War photo of the USS Saugus, with the photo of troops before battle, their value is $2,000$3,000. I am contacting you regarding two Confederate states loan certificates that I recently found. These items are not the bond documents which have coupons attached, but rather, they have different amounts written in (one is $400, and one is $1,000), and they indicate that the loans paid 8% per year

The Shops of Nashville, TN Nashville, Tennessee was founded in 1779 by a group of Overmountain Men and named after the American Revolutionary War hero Francis Nash, but today everybody knows it as Music City, with its legendary country music venues like the Grand Ole Opry House, The Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum and the historic Ryman Auditorium. The nice thing about Nashville is that it's a major city (the

4th largest in the Southeast and the 2nd largest in Tennessee, after Memphis), but it's small enough that you don't get that big-city, overwhelmed feeling. A lot of the action is in The District, downtown. And that's good news for people who want to have fun in Nashville and enjoy its legendary honky-tonks, dive bars and dance halls, while being mindful that it's also a great place to

shop for antiques. GasLamp Antiques (and GasLamp Too) is one of the South's biggest and best places to find fine antiques and furnishings, artisan, industrial, mid-century, vintage, modern and more, all in more than an acre of climate-controlled space. The aptlynamed Music City Treasure Chest is a large indoor flea market with over 6,000 square feet of antiques, collectibles, furniture, home décor, art and more.

over a five-year or 10-year period. They are dated 1862 and 1863. I have found very many similar documents that have the coupons and preprinted amounts, but I have been unable to locate many like these. The Virginia historical society does have an image on their site which shows one very much like I have. I am interested in obtaining an initial assessment of whether these items carry much potential value.

A Confederate bond valued between $100 and $200. • First and finest antique mall in the Charleston area Est. 1988. • 90+ booths operating under one roof in an 11,000 sq. ft. climate-controlled mall. • Featuring American, European, country & formal furniture, sterling, old bronzes, glassware, china, old prints, jewelry, old books and Indian artifacts.

JS: Your two “loan certificates” are better known as Confederate bonds. There are several reference books that break them down into many subtypes. The original 1961 reference on the subject is by Grover Criswell, Confederate and Southern States Bonds, and his reference numbers are most commonly used, though there are more recent publications. As you noted, many bonds had coupons that were clipped when interest was due. This type of bond is noted by Criswell as a stock certificate. There are four different borders known on your $400 certificate with a vignette of a sailing ship. This is referenced by Criswell as CR106 from a total of 175 different types. There were 13,284 of this particular stock certificate issued in varying amounts. This certificate was printed by Hoyer & Ludwig in Richmond, Va. The other versions of this particular bond were published by J.T. Patterson & Co., Columbia, S.C. Your other stock certificate (CR126) with the vignette of a reclining figure with charts and globe is a labor issue, as you can see in the right-hand border stating it was from the Confederate Treasury Act of February 20, 1863. This particular certificate was printed by Evans & Cogswell, Columbia, S.C. There were 6,381 of this certificate issued. Both of your certificates appear in good overall condition, though the CR106 appears to be cracked at several folds with soiling and damage to edges, and it will sell for less than the CR126. These certificates are among the most common of Confederate bonds with retail values between $100 and $200 each. I have a few items that were handed down to me from my grandfather. My grandpa was a collector of anything military. The first item that I have is a 7th Indiana Calvary recruitment poster. The poster itself is in very good condition. It appears to have original writing on it where it says the location. The second

item I have is a Jesse James wanted poster. I am not sure of the value of either of these.

A reproduction poster with little value. An original Jesse James wanted poster would sell for $20,000.

JS: Civil War posters are most typically known in the book world as “broadsides” as is the “Wanted” poster. Original 19th century broadsides for recruiting Civil War soldiers and “Wanted” posters for famous outlaws are quite valuable but are highly reproduced. Your two posters both appear to be of this latter type being reproductions. An original Jesse James wanted poster would bring easily in excess of $20,000, and there has not been a real one I am aware of in many years on the market. The version you have is actually not even a copy of an original; it is a fantasy piece probably made originally in the

1950s and still produced. Civil War posters typically sell from about $1,000 to several thousand dollars, depending on aesthetics, size and unit. James D. Julia Auctions sold a fine grouping from the Norm Flayderman Collection in the summer of 2014 that had prices ranging as high as $15,000 for a rare example. Reproduction posters such as these are commonly encountered as decorator items. They are sometimes sold for several hundred dollars or much more “as is” to unknowledgeable buyers at auction or in antique markets, though such reproductions really have only nominal collector value. --------John Sexton is an independent appraiser and expert of Civil War memorabilia. What's Selling on Ebay? Continued From Page 19 $3,819 (26 bids, 10 bidders): Cast Iron “PERFECT REGISTERING” Mechanical Bank. This mechanical bank was made by the J.&E. Stevens Co. and patented January 10, 1893. It was designed by Charles Bailey, one of the foremost bank designers. I have never seen this on Ebay, and it is considered one of the scarcest and most difficult to find of the mechanical banks. There are no cracks, breaks or other damage and shows normal wear. This is a wonderful example of the Perfect Registering bank. It was manufactured in very limited quantities, and because of its overall attractive appearance, it is considered by collectors and the seller to be one of the prize mechanical banks to own. The Perfect Registering Bank is, as the name implies, a registering bank [that shows amounts as coins are deposited]. However, it is definitely also a mechanical bank since the figure of the girl moves down the track as coins are inserted and the operating lever pressed. The bank is a fine example of Bailey’s artistry in using flowers, animals, and figures in their makeup. This, of course, required much more time and effort in making the original patterns; however, the end result was a more interesting, attractive, detailed mechanical bank. To operate, a dime is inserted in the provided slot located in the front top edge of the left end section of the bank. A lever located in this same end section is then pressed. In so doing, the girl moves forward, and the pointer in her right hand indicates the amount now in the bank. A little dog at her side moves along with her. At the end of the wall is a soldier. When the amount approaches five dollars, the dog on the track stands up. When the dog is pressed back down, the right end of the bank swings open and the coins are retrieved. The bank works properly and is approximately 6 inches

long, 5.5 inches wide and 4.5 inches tall. (Photo: eBay seller thingsnsuch100, Jack Allen. Jack also has a YouTube.com channel called “TheBankcollector4” that describes various mechanical banks and how the Perfect Registering bank operates.) DBA: The buyer got a tremendous deal. An identical bank was sold at Morphy Auctions in 2012 for $20,000. Another one was sold for $9,000 in 2013 that was missing its paper label. In doing an extensive search for identical model banks, the prices have varied from $1,100 to $24,000. The $1,100 one had the original paper replaced, and all others were in different degrees of “original finish.” Mechanical banks have been very collectible for years, and prices have not dropped. ---------------------Deborah Abernethy is a certified appraiser with the International Association of Appraisers. Original Round Top Antiques Fair Now SIX Days The Original Round Top Antiques Fair in an unprecedented move changed its opening day to Monday, Sept. 28 for the first time in its 48-year history, making this now a six-day show, closing on Saturday Oct. 3. The venues are still the same with The Big Red Barn hosting traditional antiques in air-conditioned comfort, featuring many dealers that have been with the show for decades offering Early Americana and fine period accessories. The air-conditioned Continental Tent, a large metal-framed exhibit area with large walled booths, focuses on European and Asian collections of early furniture, home accessories and fine art. The Big Red Barn Tent is the fun collections of later antiques, vintage furnishings and repurposed/industrial décor and accessories. Just over the hill, the Carmine Dance Hall features many of the Original Round Top dealers who exhibit their small antiques, including silver collections, textiles and early furniture. Show Manager Susan Franks has been gathering these dealers, now over 300 strong, since she and her husband Bo bought the show in 2005. This has doubled her show’s size and dominance in the Round Top Market, one of the most popular in the country. Now with

Name This Famous Person by Mike McLeod

Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill was born on Nov. 30, 1874 in Blenheim Palace in Oxsfordshire, England. Some interesting facts about him are: *His mother Jennie Jerome was an American, a wealthy New York socialite. *He won the Nobel Prize for Literature for his book, The Second World War, and other books he had written. A noted author of many historical books and one novel, Churchill also wrote World in Conflict about World War I, History of English-speaking Peoples, and books about his ancestors, including the Duke of Marlborough. *He was related to Diana (Spencer), Princess of Wales, through the Duke of Marlborough. *In addition to his military career, he also worked as a reporter for newspapers and magazines, usually as a war correspondent. *He was an accomplished painter of landscapes, portraits and flowers; many of his about 500 works are held by the UK’s National Trust. *He bred butterflies.1 *His wife Clementine Hozier and he were the parents of four daughters and a son. *He was instrumental in the development and use of airplanes and tanks in World War I. *After World War II and his great leadership in defeating the Nazis, he and his party were voted out of office. It is said that he was thought to be a leader for war rather than for peace. However, he did serve as Prime Minister again from 1951 to 1955.

Winston Churchill is without question regarded as one of the greatest Britons ever born—if not the greatest. His inspiring speeches and never-quit attitude is credited with stiffening spines and upper lips and ensuring the British success in the Battle of Britain. Until America entered the war, Britain fought alone against the Nazi’s blitzkrieg war machine after it captured virtually all of Western Europe.

My words cannot do justice in describing the integrity, wit, strength and heroism of Winston Churchill, but his words can: “An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last.” “Those who serve supreme causes must not consider what

they can get but what they can give.” “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.” “Happy are the painters for they shall not be lonely. Light and colour, peace and hope, will keep them company to the end, or almost to the end, of the day.”

“We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills, we shall never surrender.” –June 4, 1940

Winston Churchill died on Jan. 24, 1965 after a series of strokes. He was buried near his place of birth. Representatives from more than 100 countries and Queen Elizabeth II herself and the Queen Mother attended the state funeral that was watched on television by hundreds of millions of people.2

While said to suffer from depression at times, he also had a great sense of humor. Nancy Astor: “If I were married to you, I’d put poison in your coffee.” Churchill: “If I were married to you, I’d drink it.” (Viscountess Nancy Astor was the first female Member of Parliament and the wife of Waldorf Astor, grandson of John Jacob Astor III. She served when Churchill was Prime Minister.)

“A lie will gallop halfway round the world before the truth has time to pull its breeches on.” “Can a people tax themselves into prosperity? Can a man stand in a bucket and lift himself up by the handle?” “A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.” “There is no doubt that it is around the family and the home that all the greatest virtues, the most dominating virtues of human society, are created, strengthened and maintained.”

Batgirl Yvonne Craig Passes

Yvonne Craig passed away in her home in Pacific Palisades, Calif. on Aug. 17th of complications from breast cancer that had spread to the liver. She was born on May 16, 1937 and was 78 years old. She was a collector of African masks. Born in Taylorville, IL, Yvonne

embarked on a career in ballet, joining the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo in 1954. Later, she moved to Los Angeles where she was discovered and began her movie and TV career. Although famous for portraying Batgirl on the Batman TV series, Yvonne also co-starred with Elvis Presley in Kissing Cousins and It Happened At The World's Fair. Yvonne guest starred in more than 150 episodes of TV shows like Star Trek, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Dobie Gillis, Wild, Wild, West, 77 Sunset Strip, Dr. Kildare, My Three Sons, It Takes A Thief, McHale's Navy, Love American Style, Starsky and Hutch, My Favorite Martian, The Big Valley, Fantasy Island and others. In Batman, Yvonne did her own stunts, including the Batcycle. In an interview with her published in Southeastern Antiquing Magazine in

2000, she revealed that the Batcycle was stripped down and sold as a street bike. “No one knew in those days that memorabilia would be important," she said then.* Later in life, Yvonne became a successful real estate agent. Her final wishes expressed through her family on www.YvonneCraig.com were: “Wish Number One, is that her family, friends and fans would know how much she loved them and always treasured her time with them. Wish Number Two, was that no one waste a moment of their time in mourning for her loss in sadness but instead celebrate the awesome life she had been fortunate enough to live. She felt that she lived a wonderful life and was blessed in many ways.” I had the privilege of interviewing Yvonne Craig for the article in the magazine, and she was a delight. Thanks, Batgirl! We will miss you. -----------------*The entire interview with Yvonne Craig may be read at www.go-star.com/ antiquing/batgirl.htm.)

Morphy’s will auction the legendary Kyle D. Moore Petroliana collection Oct. 5 Morphy Auctions has been chosen to auction the prestigious Kyle D. Moore petroliana collection, now owned by a private investor. It is the most valuable collection ever to pass through Morphy’s doors, with estimated value of $15 million-$20 million. Containing more than 900 gas globes, 150 vintage gas pumps and 2,000 petroleum-related advertising signs, the collection was amassed over a 40-year period by Moore, a cable TV entrepreneur who died in March of 2014. Eight years prior to his demise, Moore sold the entire collection to an Oklahoma businessman. After the collection was purchased, the buyer decided it should remain at Kyle Moore’s house. It was a wise move since the collection was purchased as an investment and was secure and well cared for right where it was. There are signs worth up to $100,000 apiece and pumps worth as much as $30,000. The collection will be dispersed in a series of four or five auctions, with the opener slated for Oct. 5. Subsequent

auctions will be held in 2016, starting with a January session. “We are honored to be handling such a prestigious and highly regarded collection,” said Dan Morphy, whose Lancaster County, Pa., company holds world auction records in many categories, including antique advertising. Auction items will be on display at Morphy’s gallery approximately 30 days before each auction session, as well as online at www.morphyauctions.com. Tel: 717-335-3435.

“An Antique Aficionado and Treasure Seeker’s Paradise”: The 57th Fishersville/Shenandoah Antiques Expo Need some new furnishings or unique pieces for decorating your home? What about doing some holiday shopping? It’s never too soon! And the perfect opportunity is the 57th Shenandoah Antiques Expo Friday through Sunday, Oct. 9–11 at the Augusta Expo (I-64, Exit 91) in Fishersville, Va. This weekend getaway is a quick jaunt from Waynesboro, Staunton and even Charlottesville and Lynchburg. And it’s definitely worth the trip from D.C. and other more distant locations. Heritage Promotions, located in Lynchburg Va., sponsors this expansive indoor/outdoor event. “Since 1986 our show has grown into one of the premier antiques events in the Mid-Atlantic,” said Raymond Stokes, co-founder of Heritage Promotions. “Thousands of folks return to Fishersville for every show because they scooped up a treasure or a ‘real steal’ on their last trip.” Whether you’re a serious buyer, novice collector or just a weekend travel buff, the Fishersville Show provides an amazing array of quality antiques, interesting and hard to find collectibles, and other vintage items. The Expo offers a fabulous venue of buildings, barns, booths and tents for the gathering of 300+ expert dealers. This antiques extravaganza attracts antique aficionados from all along the eastern seaboard and mid-Atlantic regions. The show offers tremendous values, Stokes said. “Collectors find authentic pieces at fair prices. Why go to New York and spend more?”

If you’ve never attended a Fishersville Antique Expo, mark your calendar—you won’t be disappointed. The Shenandoah Antiques Expo has a reputation for fine 18th- and 19th-century American and English period antiques from topnotch, reputable dealers from Florida to Maine. Visitors seek treasures of jewelry, silver, glassware, primitives, rugs, and better collectibles such as doorstops, decorated stoneware, art, decoys, toys and Civil War memorabilia. Tastemakers of another sort snap up country Americana, such as early 19thcentury painted furniture, and mid-century modern that tuck into eclectic interiors. According to Stokes, “At the end of the day, the expo is sheer entertainment for anybody bitten by the antiques bug or somebody looking for a fun weekend. For a three-day $10 pass with free parking, you can search for an investment piece, one that jumps out at you and seems to call your name or something that just matches your decor!” Hours for the 57th Shenandoah Antiques Expo will be: Oct. 9 (9 a.m.-5 p.m.), Oct .10 (8 a.m.-5 p.m.) and Oct. 11 (11 a.m.-4 p.m.). The Augusta Expo is at 277 Expo Road, Fishersville, VA 22939 (for directions during event: 540-3372552). Admission: Oct. 9, $10; Oct. 10/11, $5

Described by school spokesperson Shelly Dumont as a watershed moment for the Institute, Dumont said the school’s first foray into e-learning was consistent with Asheford’s innovative and groundbreaking teaching techniques employed over the last 50 years. “When we offer something new, we like to take the time to make sure it’s done right,” said Dumont at a Q & A session following the announcement. When asked about the differences in curriculum between textbooks and the new e-Course format of the program, Dumont said there was literally no comparison. “In terms of sheer volume, it’s almost double the size of the printed version and comes loaded with interactive videos, multimedia-activities, web-based resource links, and a host of other features we simply can’t add into the texts.” Dumont went on to say that the eCourse had been in development for almost two years by the school’s IT team, before any release dates were even considered. Industry insiders attending the trade gathering were granted temporary pass-codes to the e-Course, and were given full access to the programs options and features at a demonstration held during the event. Director of the school Charles Green presided over the presentation and noted during the unveiling that the program had undergone almost a year of beta-testing by international students prior to its intended release in North America. “We are really pleased with the response so far,” said Drew, “We think the e-Course is really going to be a gamechanger when it comes to setting the bar for future antiques and appraising education.” For more information about the new e-Course program, call 877-444-4508 or visit www.asheford.com. Antique “Dream Auction” September 25 & 26 Sale starts Friday at 5 p.m., Saturday at 11 a.m. Preview: Thursday 1-6 p.m., Friday 1- 5 p.m. & Saturday 9:30 to 11 a.m.

Imagine getting a phone call for you to come out to see some items at one of the most famous old mansions in your area and learning that the owners were ready to downsize. While driving across town to the landmark estate you wonder what treasures lay behind its pillars. Your visit starts by entering the foyer, tastefully decorated with fine art and sconces. As you enter the living room, with the floor covered with Persian rugs, you look to the right and see cabinets filled with Steuben, Baccarat and art glass. Looking ahead you see built in cabinets with Meissen, Dresden, Royal Worcester, Herend and other fine porcelains surrounded by brilliant period cut glass. The curios are loaded with high end paperweights and figurines. The walls are adorned with wonderful paintings and mirrors. Clocks, vases, fine lamps, period furniture, bronzes and fine antiques are everywhere! Upon entering the kitchen you see fine china sets, lots of service plates, oyster plates, majolica, Venetian stemware as well as shelves full of Waterford and other fine crystal. You then open a door revealing the silver closet, your heart beats like a drum as you realize it is mostly all sterling including Georgian pieces going back into the 18th century, American coin silver, Tiffany, Cartier, countless sets of flatware and much more. From there you move on up the staircase into the library were you view shelves of fine books, steins, a collection of sterling match safes, Oriental treasures brought back from long ago and framed autographed photos of movie stars and famous people lining the wall. Then on to a bedrooms, where you see a cabinet filled with a collection of Victorian art glass then a wall of fine miniature paintings, and a jewelry cabinet having drawer after drawer of diamond and gemstone jewelry, gold chains and bracelets, watches and so much more, a quick scan of boxes reveal names such as Tiffany, Cartier, David Yurman, John Hardy and others. The owners then ask if you have time to look in the attic, you say “yes” in record speed, trying to contain your excitement. The attic holds boxes that have been there untouched for so long they are covered with a thick layer of dust. Unwrapping items seems like Christmas at the Biltmore Estate, as you uncover a collection of Native American items including pottery and jewelry, items brought back from an African safari, a chest containing early North Carolina documents going back to the 1820’s, a tin box containing Confederate Civil War currency, a cigar box with gold coins and silver dollars, a trunk with quilts, samplers and coverlets, and much more. It all seems too good to be true. You take a moment and ask what items they wish or you to sell at auction. To your amazement and delight, they answer...”We wish to sell it all”.
