Impact Report 2022 - 2023

Letter from AIS General Director

Dear Friends of AIS, Antigua International School provides the best education in Central America for all who seek it regardless of economic or social status. AIS students think critically, act ethically, and serve others so they will be prepared to transform Guatemala and the world. True to our mission, the 2022-23 school year offered a myriad of opportunities both to deepen and expand learning impacts that underpin this inspiring vision. The data points included in this Impact Report shine a light on the life-changing opportunity that is an AIS education. Enrollment grew from 323 to 365 students. Tuition assistance made an AIS education possible for 53% of our students. Standardized markers of achievement at all divisions and for all subjects far exceeded not only department and national standards but - in many cases international benchmarks as well. 100% of our largest senior class graduated fully prepared for post-secondary education, and - through AIS' internationally focused liberal arts curriculum and the individualized attention they received on campus - both ready and inspired to pursue their own ethical highest purpose. But these data points only begin to tell the story of AIS transformative impact. Please take a few moments to read the narratives and testimonials included in this report. More than anything, an AIS education cultivates a love for learning and the foundation for service to others. Nothing tells this story more vividly than the words of AIS faculty, parents and, especially, our beloved students. Our impact would not be possible without the generous support of the many community champions, supporters and donors we are privileged to count as friends. As with all leading independent and international schools, tuition alone does not cover the full cost of an AIS education. We are humbled and honored by the continued generosity of many in the AIS community who make the promise of an AIS education a reality for our students. Please know that my door is always open to all members of the AIS community, and I am never farther than a visit, email or call away. Working together, we will continue to build the brightest possible future for our school. Sincerely, Nash Adamson General Director Antigua International School Director@antiguais.org

Letter from Co-Founder and Chair of Advancement Committee

As the laughter fills the halls of AIS once again, we are joyfully reminded of the purpose of our efforts. Looking back we can see that the 2022-2023 school year was aspirational and foundational. An ambitious strategic plan was launched, policy manuals reviewed thoroughly, construction plans drafted, a teacher training program inaugurated, and a growth strategy outlined. The AIS Board, working in partnership with our new general director, Nash Adamson, our administrative director, Monica de Dios, and new advancement coordinator, Ruth Alegria, committed to serve countless hours in committees, board meetings and on the ground to ensure its success. Yet none of it could have been executed without the support of all of you - our entire AIS community and friends. Our students, parents, staff, alumni, and many friends and donors came together to provide the financial resources to see this plan in action. More than $1,000,000 has been raised to date from 160 donors. It was truly inspiring to see such generosity, and it has motivated us to continue to bring the highest quality education to all who seek it. The results of this energetic drive are tangible as we begin a new year: beautiful, purpose-built spaces for our little ones, music, library and teachers; new programming that offers breadth and depth to our educational program; robust enrollment with 13% growth in the number of students. And most importantly, 53% of our students received financial aid. When we dreamed of AIS, we dreamed big. We truly believed an education could be relational not transactional, ensuring each child reached their ethical highest purpose by guiding them to think critically, act ethically and serve others. Providing a world class education to all who seek it is a worthy mission. So while there is much to do to fulfill the AIS vision, we pause and celebrate you, and share our gratitude for the enduring commitment you have shown. This year we will continue to seek your support as we further fulfill our strategic vision. Exciting new spaces and programs needed to support our student growth are already in design. Our success in bringing them to reality will depend not on one individual, but on the efforts of many. We are confident that with your support, the AIS vision will continue to bring light to Guatemala for decades to come. With gratitude, Christine Keilhauer de Wilson, Co-Founder and Chair of Advancement Committee cwilson@antiguais.org

Ways to Give

Who We Are AIS is an independent, not for profit, international school that brings together an experienced and passionate faculty with innovative teaching methods. Founded in November 2011 with 60 students in grades 1-8, AIS enrolled 365 students in Toddlers through 12th grade in the 2022-23 school year. Seventy six percent of the student body is Guatemalan, with the remainder representing over 30 nationalities. AIS grants tuition assistance to more than half its students. A need blind process is used to admit students, and an independent socioeconomic study is utilized to determine need.

VISION To guide children to pursue their own ethical highest purpose by teaching them how to think and serve others, so that they may transform Guatemala and the world. The motto of the school is to think critically, act ethically, and serve others.

MISSION Antigua International School is committed to providing the best education in Central America for all who seek it regardless of economic or social status. Through a strong, internationally focused liberal arts curriculum and individualized attention, AIS challenges students to cultivate a love of learning, lead an ordered life, and accept personal responsibility.

Community spotlights Jorge Farfán - 11th Grade Student During my 10 years here at AIS, it has been impactful to learn about our three pillars: think critically, act ethically and serve others. These support me both academically and personally. One great example of this is in Mr. Josh's World History class where we see different sides of complex issues. When we debated industrialization we not only learned about the time period, but also about the impacts of global change.

Jorge’s parents We chose to be part of AIS because we firmly believe in the importance of a holistic education that is not only based on academic excellence but also on ethical and humanistic development. Acting ethically, thinking critically, and serving others are important pillars that we hope will shape our children's development. We have always wanted to give them high-quality education that equips them with the necessary tools for their future, and at AIS, we see that perfect combination. Here, they not only focus on imparting knowledge but also mold children and young adults with strong human and ethical values. Critical thinking will provide them with a clear vision for the future, allowing them to continue progressing in each stage of their lives.

Ariana Chacón - 10th Grade Student AIS has made a big impact in my life in so many ways. I was shy when I came in 3rd grade, but everyone was so kind to me that I fell in love with AIS. Our school gives you a lot of learning opportunities; in each class you are able to demonstrate your abilities, and you will receive the support you need from your classmates and teachers. It's a place that has helped me to discover new talents such as playing the marimba and piano, being in four musicals, and serving on the Student Council. Being on the Student Council in particular has been very important for me because it has been a great opportunity to meet more students and develop leadership skills through planning, organizing, and enjoying the activities we do in school.

Ariana’s parents AIS has had a positive impact on our family that inspires us to be part of a change based on principles, values, and quality education. We feel highly fortunate to be part of the AIS community, where we have interacted with different cultures, made new friendships, and participated in various activities that enrich us as individuals and teach our children to see the needs that exist around us. We value and appreciate the social aid that AIS promotes and instills in its students!

Lisbeth de Solórzano (Spanish Teacher) During my 12 years of teaching at AIS, the exchange of experiences in a context of cultural and social diversity has enriched my teaching practice immeasurably. It has contributed to my development and growth as an educator. Additionally, the opportunity to coexist with a diverse community, where diversity is seen as an asset, has had a profound impact on my professional life. Living through this experience has been WONDERFUL! The most significant impact on students during my years of teaching at AIS has been the development of critical thinking through reading. I have invested knowledge, research, and, above all, focused energy on the development of reading skills. Effective reading time in the classroom, comprising a variety of activities, provides children with the opportunity to express their opinions, present arguments based on their reading, develop and respond to high-level questions, actively participate in debates, analyze situations from different perspectives, and propose solutions. All of this is to support a passion for reading, as "the passion for reading is the best gift for a lifetime." (Solórzano, 2023) 6

Fernando Aragón - Science Teacher The Antigua International School community has had a profound impact on both my personal and professional life. I have had the opportunity to design, create, and implement curriculum and experimental practice in a variety of scientific fields. The school has granted me the freedom to make my own decisions for the benefit of the Science Department, allowing me constant freedom to innovate. I am deeply grateful for this tremendous opportunity as I have grown significantly as an educator and I have had the chance to share my knowledge while learning from other professionals in the Sciences from various countries and cultures. AIS offers a comprehensive growth and development opportunity for students in a safe environment. Students have the chance to unlock their full potential while building relationships with peers from various social backgrounds and nationalities, all within a framework of respect and acceptance of individual differences. Students have the opportunity to learn while developing empathy and service to others, which has a profound impact on their lives and helps them become more attuned to the social needs of their community.

Teacher Training Center Our innovative Teacher Training Center (TTC) - launched in 2022 through a partnership between AIS and Universidad Rafael Landívar - places early career educators as full-time associate teachers in AIS classrooms. The TTC has an enormous impact, both for AIS and for the surrounding community. This impact includes: - Extending AIS' mission of providing the best quality education in Central America for all who seek it to a new group - early career educators in and around Antigua. - Providing university scholarships and stipends for participating early career educators. - Engaging early career educators in a series of weekly professional development experiences led by faculty mentors in addition to on-the-job training in a progressive educational environment. - Bringing a third full-time teacher into AIS classrooms. This allows for increased individualized attention for our students and further augments the bilingual learning environment.

Daniela Montenegro Architecture, University of Pécs (Hungary) AIS is a single school made up of different personalities, backgrounds, and communities. Together, AIS is a place where you learn how the real world functions; it is a school that deeply cares about your well being and your future. Since I was a little girl I studied at AIS. I never thought a place could become a second home. During my time at AIS, I learned to care for my future, friends, and family. AIS taught me how to deeply love myself and others surrounding me.

Fernando Castellán - Engineering in Innovation and Development, Universidad Tecnológico de Monterrey (Mexico).

AIS is more than just a school to me; it is a place where I was able to achieve my highest goals, a place where I found my best friends, and a place where I felt motivated everyday to always give my best and build a better version of myself. I am thankful for being part of such an amazing community that helped me immerse myself in opportunities that I have always dreamed of. I participated in international activities such as the Panama Model United Nations and MathCounts. I was supported to earn valedictorian in my class, and am now living one of my biggest dreams by studying in one of the best universities in the world, Tecnológico de Monterrey on an academic scholarship. Even though I am here now, AIS will always be my second home.

Service Learning BY T H E NUM BE R S: 3,300+ volunteer hours completed by high school students 27 service learning visits to campus from community leaders 26 service projects completed in class by grades K-12 6 AIS volunteer days 4 service learning field trips 2 after school service learning clubs

S POTLI G HTS O N S E R VICE: Jose Julian Anleu Moklebust - 11th Grade I had a number of impactful service experiences, including two medical missions. The first was to El Hato where I translated for visiting specialists and general medical practitioners who were engaged in a community health clinic. Additionally, I had the opportunity to visit the Common Hope Clinic where I supported the administrative staff in their health outreach. I would like to be a cardiac surgeon, and these experiences prepared me for my future by showing me the impact outreach can have on helping people.

Salma Huessein Elsaghir Chitay - 10th Grade I had many memorable service learning experiences on trips and here at AIS. We studied global issues in my social studies class with Mr. Josh. My final project was to go off campus and teach a class to fourth graders at Niños de Guatemala about how we as young women should love ourselves and dream big. I cannot wait to return there again this year! Here at AIS I volunteered once a week helpíng AIS 3rd graders in their roller skating class. Teaching them new tricks and helping younger friends was one of the most fun parts of each week. 12

The Building for the Future campaign enriches and extends the life-changing impact of an AIS education. The aim of the campaign is to raise $1,000,000+ to support tuition assistance, develop people and programs, and build an Early Childhood Center, library extension, and Performing Arts Hall. To date, the Building for the Future campaign has raised $1,040,000 from a total of 160 donors, including the donations received during the previous fiscal year included in the Financials Section below. Resulting from this, AIS: - Continues to ensure that a world-class education is available to all who seek it through tuition assistance and a needs-blind admissions. - Has developed programs including the Teacher Training Center, new performing arts ensembles, and additional Advanced Placement opportunities. - Further invests in our most valuable resource - our people - through increased salaries and opportunities for professional learning. - Opened an Early Childhood Center with capacity for 100 students, expanded AIS Library, and Performing Arts Hall in August of this year. We will celebrate accomplishments from The Building for the Future Campaign at our annual Founders Arts Night on Friday, November 10th. In addition to our celebration of the arts, the event will include an inauguration of new learning spaces, and the unveiling of plaques for donors who made these spaces - and the learning inside them - possible.
