WIN! with TWT!

Shrek the Musical at Riverside Theatres Bush Music Club Two TWT readers have won double passes to opening night of Packemin Productions’ new production Shrek the Musical this Friday February 2 at Riverside Theatres Parramatta at 7.30pm.

Carlingford and Maddy Mayes of Rydalmere. Everyone’s favourite ogre is back in the hilarious stage spectacle based on the Oscar-winning smash DreamWorks animation hit film. Shrek brings all the beloved characters you know from the film to life on stage and proves there’s more to the story than meets the ears. “Once upon a time, there was a little ogre named Shrek....” and thus begins the tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a lifechanging journey alongside a wisecracking Donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue. Throw in a short-tempered bad guy, a cookie with an attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you’ve got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Starring Jay Laga’aia as Shrek, Luke Joslin as Lord Farquaad, Mikayla Williams as Princess Fiona and Nat Jobe as Donkey, this show is one for the whole family! A group of talented performers from TWT territoryare featured in this production including Jessica Fallico (co-director) of Ryde; Chloe Angel (Queen Lilian & Humpty Dumpty) of West Ryde; Andy Davis (King Harold) of Willoughby; Ally Palmer of Gladesville; Chloe Rosenberg of Denistone; Emily Simmons (Cheshire Cat) of Ryde and Katia Van Hilten (Blind Mouse) of Ryde. Wright of Passage program offers an opportunity for youth who have disengaged from school to take an alternate pathway to their future. The program is fully funded and includes a TAFE course to undertake Certificate 2 in Boating Services (which can also be used to lead into other Trade Apprenticeships) at Meadowbank TAFE as well as the opportunity for hands on experience, under the guidance of experienced tradesmen and mentors at Woolwich Dock. The program came about after a wooden yacht was donated to Sailors with disAbilities in 2017 and although the yacht is principally sound it will be restored to its former glory by the participants. Once restored the Program includes the opportunity for the youth to learn how to sail and they will then sail their yacht to Hobart from Sydney, again under the guidance of experienced sailors and mentors. This program is aimed at youth aged 16 years and over who have found that traditional schooling isn’t for them. Despite the name of the organisation, this program is not aimed at the disabled. Founder of Sailors with disAbilities David Pescud, himself has profound dyslexia, and left school aged 15. To this day he still has difficulty with reading and writing, however he was successful in his career and able to retire in his mid 40s, with plans to sail around the world. However after reading a newspaper article about a group of disabled sailors who wanted to sail in the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, David took up the challenge, and shortly after the organisation was formed. That all happened over 20 years ago. David’s dyslexia has provided him with first hand experience of the angst that many youth experience. He understands the difficulty of fitting in as a teen, the feelings of hopelessness and even homelessness, and now at age 70 he works every day to help people find their way. For David it is very important

that the Wright of Passage Program succeeds, as there are too many young people out there experiencing hardship and the program is all about building optimism, providing hope and direction. The program is due to commence on February 5. For more information contact 0421 725 170 or email info@ sailorswithdisabilities.com

Our Today is Tomorrow’s History Over the past few years the Ryde district has undergone huge changes and today those changes continue. Ryde District Historical Society is endeavouring to preserve a record of the area from its early days to the present. Since the Society began more than 55 years ago, members have been gathering items that capture the history of our locality. The Society’s collection contains more than 20,000 photographs but they need to expand this resource for the benefit of future generations. Did you grow up in the district? Did you or your parents/grandparents live or go to school in Ryde? Do you have any photographs of houses, streets, buildings, parks or events in the area? Do you have school photos? Then the Society would love to take copies of your photos! On Saturday February 17 the Society is holding a Scanning Day at Willandra House, 770 Victoria Road, Ryde from 10.30am to 3pm. Bring your photos along. Enjoy a cuppa while members scan them and have a look around the house and their collection. And the Last Word goes to . . .

More important priorities Dear Sir Thank you for providing this opportunity to express my views on the issue of the Australia Day issue. As an elected Councillor, I am here to reflect the wishes of the local residents and I have received no requests to alter the current form of festivities on Australia Day from my local constituents. However, many residents have contacted me expressing concerns of massive over development, the loss of their parks, their deep concern at the number of trees to be felled and requests to protect heritage and to establish an early history of the area including a monument to the Aboriginal leaders. These are issues that I have, or am currently, seeking to action. I would welcome meeting with the local Aboriginal community. I believe in Ryde there is

a solid base of respect, understanding and empathy for the Aboriginal peoples and I would like to discuss what can be achieved at Council level to further assist, including creating roles for local cultural officers, Indigenous rangers and educators of Aboriginal history. In my experience, open and frank communication in situations where people are free to express their grievances, and the difficulties and complexities of a situation can be addressed, can result in long lasting solutions. I would be working towards building a cohesive, inclusive Ryde that celebrates the many different cultures and histories that make it is such a rich and diverse area to live. EDWINA CLIFTON Councillor, City of Ryde Dear Sir, It's great that TWT is hosting a discussion

about Australia Day. I agree with Anthony Roberts MP (TWT 24 Jan) that we are a mature nation that can both celebrate the arrival of Europeans in 1788 and acknowledge the loss suffered by Aboriginal people. When I did Australian history at school, ages ago, we learned a lot about the hardship and isolation faced by the European settlers and the great achievements that they made. But it is only fairly recently that I've learned more about the downside of that success. After careful research one historian has conservatively estimated that between 1790 and 1928 deaths across Australia numbered 2,000 - 2,500 for Europeans and 20,000 for Aborigines. I believe this requires acknowledgement, while we also celebrate Australia's multicultural achievements. Can we do both on Australia Day?

PAT TURNER Macquarie Park

Welcome to 2018!

I trust everyone had an enjoyable and relaxing break over the holiday season. We were blessed with lots of warm days, so I hope you got to make the most of the sunshine before heading back to work or study. I would also like to wish Bennelong a very Happy Australia Day! The day provided a wonderful opportunity for our vibrant, multicultural community to come together and celebrate everything that makes Australia the greatest country in the world. I hope you had a chance to get out to some of the fantastic local celebratory events – I spent the day welcoming new citizens with Ryde Council, which is always a highlight. Of course, since I last wrote one of these updates, we’ve had a by-election in Bennelong. Firstly, can I again apologise for putting everyone through the chaos of this time. It was a spirited campaign, but it was a real honour to again receive your support to represent this great electorate. It is a great privilege to serve Bennelong, and I look forward to continuing to do so for many years to come. As always, feel free to get in touch with my office if there is any way that I can be of service.

Letters to the Editor Free trades program for disengaged youths Dear Sir, We are wondering if you could help us spread the word about this fantastic FREE opportunity that our NFP Charity has available for youth? vided him with first hand experience of the angst that many youth experience, he understands the difficulty of fitting in as a teen, the feelings of hopelessness and even homelessness, and now at age 70 he works every day to help people find their way. For David it is very important that the “Wright of Passage” Program succeeds, as there are too many young people out there experiencing hardship and the program is all about building optimism, providing hope and direction. There isn't much in this world that is free these days, and how often will you come by a free trip to Tasmania as well! The program is due to commence on February 5. More important priorities first Dear Sir, Thank you for this chance to share our views on Australia Day. I assume ALL Australians, irrespective of our ethnic / cultural background LOVE Our AUSTRALIA and want to Celebrate the privilege and blessing of “doing Life” here …we like Dorothea Mackellar…”love a sunburnt country”. Richard Di Natale, who announced that changing the date of Australia Day is “one of his top priorities for 2018” (SMH 15/1/ 2018) would do well to change his priorities. Is he majoring on the minors? I agree with NT indigenous leader Jacinta Nampijinpa Price whose focus is on bettering the future of Indigenous Australians, rather than on which day we should celebrate Australia Day. She said, ” but how is changing the date going to do a thing for the Aboriginal women dying at the hands of Aboriginal men, the Aboriginal children who miss out on school and an education and the Aboriginal children who are living in dysfunctional circumstances People want to call it a

day of mourning - mourning does not give us freedom, it imprisons us and I have had enough. I want to pull my people out of the crippling state of mourning and I don't want anyone to feel guilty or bad for feeling joy and celebrating a country we love." What great priorities Jacinta Price! Priorities I enthusiastically support! On a personal level I don’t mind on which day we celebrate Australia Day. But I do believe, like Jacinta Price, that all Australians would do better to prioritise stamping out violence, improving education for marginalised Australian children and increasing job opportunities; rather than making it a priority to change the date. JULIE WORSLEY Meadowbank POSTSCRIPT: Did Governor Arthur Phillip really first land in Sydney on January 26, 1788 or was it really January 21. I was recently at Camp Cove and came across this monument.

Wattle Day an alternative Dear Sir, Australia Day on January 26 prompts anger and disharmony. The Government says it is a day that unifies the nation, but this clearly is not the case. Grassroots calls for change, mean the date is destined no longer to be a focus of unity. Research now shows that most Australians (57 percent) think it doesn’t matter if the date is changed. We need desperately to think our way through the problem. And there is a way. But first some facts. A celebration on January 26 began in 1818, on the initiative of Governor Macquarie, to mark the 30 th anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet in Sydney harbour. The day became known as Foundation Day. It was not until 1938, the 150 th anniversary, that it took on a broad-

er focus. But it was not until 1994 that all states and territories agreed to standardise the celebration as a public holiday on January 26, instead of it being held on the nearest Monday. Aboriginal people object to the celebration of the events of January 26 and many cannot celebrate a day that is the anniversary of an invasion. That was the strong message in the major Aboriginal protest marches that accompanied the 1938 and 1988 celebrations. Today very many nonAboriginal Australians are sensitive to that message - a clear indicator of the progress the Australian community is making in our shared journey of Reconciliation. Australia Day is not set in stone, we have adapted it as we have thought appropriate. It seems that we need think about it again. But how do we go forward from here? Another fact is that Australia has another officially gazetted day of national celebration: National Wattle Day, that was proclaimed in 1992 as a national day across all Australian states and territories. This followed the proclamation of Golden Wattle as Australia’s national floral emblem in 1988. The fact that we already have two days focussed on celebrating Australia, the land and its people, means that there is scope to grow and evolve our national celebrations. An initial step would be for the federal government to better promote National Wattle Day to raise awareness that our celebrations of national identity and achievement are not focussed solely around January 26. Increased awareness and focus on National Wattle Day would enable September 1 (the first day of spring) to be more widely known as a day of national celebration and constructively diffuse some of the anger and disharmony that occurs now with celebrations on January 26. In this way National Wattle Day would not compete with Australia Day, but rather complete Australia Day. As a further step, we could officially bracket the two days as designated dates for celebrating our great fortune in being citizens of this land. Given the growing unease around basing national celebrations on a day that will always be a source of pain and sadness for many in the community, government could propose that the community think about how best to create celebrations on each of the two days. Such a process could be undertaken over a period of say three to five years, during which the Australian community would be directly involved in the shaping of those celebrations. At the end of the designated period, government could settle on arrangements for celebrating each of the days in the manner that best reflects our aspirations as a people. As it has always done, wattle can lead us to think our way through to an Australia Day for all of us to celebrate the magnificence of this land and the achievements of all its people. Ratepayers money risk from Ryde’s councillors green investment plan? A motion to scrap the City of Ryde’s green-driven policy to withdraw investments of around $200 million of ratepayers money from financial institutions that invest in fossil fuel energy has been defeated by seven votes to five. The rescission motion at last month’s council meeting - put by the Ryde Liberals and backed by Independent Clr Roy Maggio - called for the policy to be scrapped until the council had received financial assurances that investments would not nosedive as a result of it. The defeated motion also sparked debate on the reality of climate change with Liberal Clr Chris Moujalli warning Ryde not to vilify fossil fuel energy. “We do not want to go down the path of South Australia, where they have an alternative energy policy and power cuts,” he said. “We already have to pay the cost of power bills going up that effects our

households and our businesses. “Our country was built on fossil fuels and must we now look badly on them ?” The Greens Clr Edwina Clifton strongly disagreed. “Our top priority must be to adapt to the inevitable reality of climate change and the burning of fossil fuels is what is causing climate change .. to say mining is keeping the economy going is a fallacy.” For Liberal Trenton Brown the debate was not about ideology but economics. “Like every one dollar coin you have heads and tails, return and risk and we no little about the risk of this policy,” he said. “It is not about ideology,

we simply want a report.” Councillor Maggio said the council had no right to adopt the policy with a risk assessment. “This council has no mandate to invest $200 million in ratepayer’s money without a report to say this policy is beneficial and our staff support it, because our ratepayers pay high rates and deserve better.” Mayor Laxale said council staff will provide monthly reports and that he is “comfortable” with the system of financial checks and balances in place. Liberal Clr Jordan Lane said a staff report falls short of a detailed risk assessment into investing in so called “environmentally correct” institutions. “This Rescission Mo-

tion is standing between ratepayer’s money and a possible financial train wreck,” Clr Lane said. “Are we going to invest $200 million in something that is not secure?” It would not be the first time the City of Ryde has been stung by investment losses with the council losing around three million dollars during the recent world financial crisis, although staff assured councillors the council is continuing to recover past losses. Councillor Penny Pedersen assured councillors that the new investment policy “hardly puts Ryde at risk” and that major European institutions and other Sydney councils are leading the way in divesting money into alternative energy safe portfolios.

Ryde born Catherine Hamlin AC NSW Senior Citizen of Year 2018 Raised in Ryde’s historic residence, The Hermitage, 94-year-old pioneering surgeon Dr Catherine Hamlin AC nee Nicholson has been named 2018 NSW Senior Australian of the Year. For more than 50 years, Dr Hamlin, an obstetrician, has devoted herself to giving women in Africa a second chance at life. Dr Hamlin and her late husband, Dr Reginald Hamlin, founded a network of six hospitals and a midwifery college in Ethiopia, providing free fistula repair surgery to poor women suffering from horrendous and preventable childbirth injuries.

The midwifery college trains midwives to prevent the injuries. When Catherine arrived in Ethiopia in 1959, there were almost no resources for expectant mothers. Since then she has treated more than 50,000 women, restoring their health and dignity. Through her foundation, Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia, Catherine is tackling a new fistula frontier, Uganda. Dr Hamlin remains ac-

tive in her day-to-day work at the hospital, healing women through surgery, rehabilitation and counselling. Having been awarded honorary fellowships in the medical associations

of Australia, England and the United States and Australia’s highest honour, the Companion of the Order of Australia, Dr Hamlin was touched to learn in late 2016 she’d been named after one of Sydney’s new ferries. “I am so grateful. It really is lovely to know that so many people have tremendous love for our work and for our patients,” she said. “I hope that this will help draw the attention of the world to this great need in Ethiopia for maternal healthcare. I want to help these women.”

Hunters Hill ratepayers have been urged to attend an Extraordinary General Meeting in Hunters Hill Town Hall at 6.30pm this Thursday (tomorrow) night. The Extraordinary Meeting has been called to discuss Hunters Hill’s response to State Government laws which strip councillors of the right to determine local development applications. Under the State Government laws, small scale planning will be determined by council staff with major planning decisions to be determined by a planning panel approved by the Berejiklian Government. Phil Jenkyn OAM from the Save Hunters Hill Municipality Coalition described the laws as the greatest threat to local democracy since the government’s failed attempt to abolish Hunters Hill and merge it with Ryde and Lane Cove. “The removal of councillors’ role to determine local developments is an attack on Hunters Hill,” he said. “We are very firmly against this and we urge every resident who cares about local democracy and for the heritage of Hunters Hill to attend this extraordinary general meeting.”

This is our vision, our dream come true says Hunters Hill local Gail O’Brien

THERE are many Hunters Hill residents who can say they’ve seen a dream come true but few in the profound and life changing way of Viret Street’s Gail O’Brien.

MARILYN SINGER

KEN BOCK

The stunning Chris O’Brien Lifehouse in Camperdown is the vision of Gail O’Brien (pictured) and her late husband, cancer surgeon Dr Chris O’Brien. TWT on the spot PHOTO.

ELISABETH FLEMING of Carlingford for service to the community through social welfare organisations. Service includes: Wayside Chapel Crisis Centre: Coordinator, 2000-2008; Volunteer, 19921997. Volunteer, Mother’s and Children’s Unit, Emu Plains Corrective Service Centre, since circa 2000; Volunteer, Streethearts, since circa 2008; Committee Member, Friends and Families of Missing Persons, for many years.

Gail is the wife of the late cancer surgeon Dr Chris O’Brien and their shared vision of a Comprehensive Cancer Centre became the stunning Chris O’Brien Lifehouse building in Camperdown, when it was opened in 2013. This incredible complex provides a complete range of services for cancer patients and their families in a holistic environment unique in the

world. “Chris and I worked together fundraising for this since 2002 because we believed that, in the care of patients and their families, the system didn’t do it well.” she said. “When Chris died the whole vision could so easily have been stalled and I didn’t expect to be involved further so I’m in an incredibly privileged position.” Gail O’Brien has now

been awarded an Officer AO in the General Division of the Order of Australia. Her citation dedicates her award for being “an advocate for, and supporter of, cancer sufferers and their families through comprehensive research and treatment programs.” “I’m an advocate not just for patients but for our staff as well and things like being involved in pharmacy and research really opens your eyes

Concord scouts stalwart praises scoutings values, contributions

about the wonders of research and how we are producing our own drugs at our own pharmacy. “This is why I consider my award to be a recognition of everyone here.” With a record of 15 per cent better outcomes in comprehensive cancer, it disappoints Gail that there is a lack government funding for Chris O’Brien’s Lighthouse, in contrast to the generosity of donors and the contri-

bution of private patients. “Millions of taxpayer dollars are put into football stadiums and entertainment venues and my hope and my prayer is that governments will support us and that the financial burden so many people worry about will be alleviated.” Donations are excepted with deep appreciation. “We recently raised five million dollars in five months with no burden on the taxpayer .. a tremendous achievement” she said. “My other hope and prayer is that we will have Chris O’Brien Lifehouses in every part of the state and in every part of the country.” An integral part of Chris O’Brien’s vision was that this place of care, compassion and hope should be accessible to all Australians, regardless of means. “The whole idea of holistic care for all developed through Chris’ illness,” Gail O’Brien said. “Cancer is not an easy journey and not everyone will survive it but hope is such an important part of the journey.” Gail O’Brien has devoted her life to the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse and works an astounding amount of hours there each week. “When I get home I love walking with my dog through Hunters Hill, by the water and through Kelly’s Bush, it is a very, very special place.” Gail has been a Director of the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse, Comprehensive Cancer Centre since 2009.

THERE will always be a need for the values of scouting and the contribution scouts make to the community, said Australia Day award winner Bob Baker OAM of Concord.

ELISABETH FLEMING Dr FRIEDBERT KOHLER of Carlingford for service to rehabilitation medicine. Service includes: South Western Sydney Local Health District: Director, Rehabilitation Medicine, Braeside, Liverpool and Fairfield Hospitals, since 2004. Director Medical Services, Braeside Hospital, Hammond Care, since 2007; Director, Braeside Rehabilitation Research Group, current. OFFICER AO OF AUSTRALIA GENERAL DIVISION JOHN PIERCE of Concord for distinguished service to public administration through senior roles in developing regulatory and policy initiatives and micro-economic and energy market reforms, and to the community.

Service includes: Energy sector: Chairman, Australian Energy Market Commission, since 2010; Secretary, Commonwealth Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism, 20092010. Former Chief Economist, Pacific Power NSW, 19881993. Former Economist, Electricity Commission of NSW (Elcom).

Chair, Electricity Supply Industry Expert Panel, Review of Tasmania’s electricity industry 2010-2012. Finance: Secretary, NSW Treasury, 1997-2008 and Chief Economist, 19931996; Former Chairman, NSW Treasury Corporation. Mr Baker has served as Honorary Commissioner and was Chief Director of the 22nd Australian Jamboree from 2006-2011 and a Deputy Chief Commissioner. He also holds Scouts Australia’s Silver Kangaroo Award, presented to him in 2008. “I’m very proud of what scouts have achieved and my hope for the future is that the Scouts will adapt and modify to meet community standards without losing our core values and our identity,” he said. “I believe one of the strong things about scouting is about scouts looking after themselves, learning skills and looking after one another. “I’m proud of the team work in scouts; a scout patrol is a team of six and the leaders lead by example.” Mr Baker was closely involved in the recent Centenary of World Scouting. “There have been many highlights but the Centenary of World Scouting was a special highlight and we had 100 canoes

Scouts Commissioner Bob Baker OAM row past Governor Marie Bashir in 2008. “Because of the size and number of scouts involved this was certainly a highlight for me.” Although large events such as jamborees feature strongly in Mr Baker’s careeer there are small but significant moments he cherishes. “Some of my proudest moments are when I’m invited to a wedding of one

of the scouts,” he said. “I’m also proud of the way multiculturalism has worked out so well for us because scouts look after one another. “It is respect for one another and acceptance of one another. Mr Baker was also awarded for his role as President of Sydney Kart Racing Club for 15 years and as an Active Member since 1986.

Hunters Hill award winner’s tale is a real life Japanese love story

One of AUSTRALIA’S leading experts in Japanese literature has been awarded an Honorary Member AM in this week’s Australia Day honours.

Hunters Hill’s Dr Sakuko Matsui has dedicated most of her life to teaching and promoting Japanese literature, language and culture and is one of the University of Sydney’s most respected and admired academics. Dr Matsui spoke to The Weekly Times about her love affair with Japanese literature, her love of the University Of Sydney and her love for her home in Passey Avenue, Hunters Hill. “I grew up in Kobe, Japan, during the war and when I came here I fell in love with Australia, with this university and with Hunters Hill where I’ve since the early 1960’s,” she said. “Hunters Hill is so beautiful and leafy and I’m told that you have to live in Hunters Hill for at least 30 years to become a local and I love it as much as I did on the first day I came there. “I’m also very privileged to work at this magnificent, beautiful university, so I consider myself very lucky indeed.” “The sudents are the most important people in my working life. “I was really lucky to have very good students in the early years of my career when classes were so small and when we could teach what we wanted to teach. “I am very proud of what our Japanese Studies produced... academics, diplomats, business people, artists or scholars of fine art. “I am sure some of my former students recommended me for what I have received from the Japanese and Australian Governments. “The former Australian Ambassador to Japan, Bruce Miller, and some other younger diplomats, Hugh Clarke, Professor Emeritus of Japanese of Sydney and Leith Morton, Professor Emeritus of Tokyo University of Technology, and other academics are the people I feel indebted.” With so much traditional Japanese literature devoted to love stories, bravery and

a deep humanity it comes as no surprise that Dr Matsui has a profound love for it, too. “The Edo Period literature, especially, is very personal and not at all political and it is the same with Japanese artists of the same period. It is a highly symbolic art form.” “I’ve also taught Noh plays, which I adore and I’ve helped Sydney theatre producers to produce the plays of Mishima. “I’ve even translated a traditional Japanese puppet show into English.”

Sun Goddess

One of her recent translations is Tanizaki Jun’ichiro’s classic “A Cat Shozo And Two Women”; a delightful tale that will enchant young and old readers alike. “It is not easy to find Japanese Literature that will appeal to today’s students, many of whom have not even read literature from their own culture,” Dr Matsui admits. “So when I teach I treat each student as an individual and work to inspire a love of literature.” A wonderful storyteller in her own right, Dr Matsui was recently awarded the acclaimed Order of the Sacred Treasure with Gold and Silver Rays from the Government of Japan and tells the story behind this unique medal. “Set at the heart of this medal is a tiny, tiny fragment of a mirror, which is one of the Imperial Treasurers of Japan and which legend says is a piece from a mirror associated with the Sun Goddess, Amaterasu. “The legend says that one day the Sun Goddess hid herself in the Ama-noIwato (heavenly rock cave) and the world went dark. “To coax her out (from the cave) a mirror was held up to the entry of the cave and when she saw her reflection in the mirror she came out of the cave to look

more closely, wondering who this beautiful new sun goddess was.” Such is the vanity of even divine women but Japanese tales about beautiful women emerging from darkness into light could well be a metaphor for Dr Matsui’s own journey from the dark days of wartime Japan to what she describes as “the beautiful life of beautiful people” in Australia. “Because of my childhood in Japan I have ambivalent feelings about Japan,” she said “But I was fortunate to be one of the few women of my generation to study at university, one of only point three of a per cent of women then.” “I like Australian people very, very much although many of my first friends here at university were English, mostly Cambridge

men.” Will Dr Matsui write her own novel ? “A couple of people tell me I should write my memoirs, although I’m certainly not a novelist or a poet !” Our discussion turned to literary links between Edwardian Hunters Hill and classical Japan and to the love of a good ghost story which abounds in both cultures. “If I should ever meet a ghost here, it wouldn’t surprise me !” Dr Matsui said. This Hunters Hill resident is known to many students in her role as Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor, Japanese Language and Literature Studies from 1961 until 2001. She is also designated as a Japanese person transmitting Japan to the world by the National Policy Unit of the Government of Japan.

AUSTRALIA DAY HONOURS

Golden Girl Betty earns highest accolade - Companion of Order of Australia (AC)

AUSTRALIA’S golden girl of athletics Betty Cuthbert heads an impressive batch of local recipients in the Australia Day 2018 Honours List. The Ermington flash, who died last year aged 79, was made a Companion of the Order of Australia - a posthumous accolade for eminent service to the sport of athletics as a fourfold Olympic champion and as a role model, fundraiser andadvocatefor research into a cure for multiple sclerosis. Cuthbert’s story will continue to inspire Australian athletes for generations to come. She attended Ermington Public School as a youngster and went on to taste Olympic glory and become one of the greatest sprinters of all time. The legendary Cuthbert remains the only athlete in history to win Olympic gold in the 100m, 200m and 400m events. Raised in Ermington, she first sprinted into the nation’s hearts as a fresh faced 18-year-old at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games, where

she set an Olympic record in the 100m and a world record in the 200m to win both events. The teen sensation claimed a third gold medal running the final leg in the 4x100m relay, again in a world record time. At the Melbourne Olympics, Cuthbert won every sprint medal available to women and was the first Australian to win three gold medals at one Games, earning her the nickname of Australia’s “golden girl”. Injury would rob her of the chance to defend her titles at the 1960 Rome Games but she returned at Tokyo in 1964 to win her fourth gold medal, this time in the 400m which was to be the final race of her career. Cuthbert was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1965; was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of

Fame in 1994; named an Australian National Treasure in 1998 and entered the Athletics Australia Hall of Fame in 2000. She was also the first Australian inducted into the International Association of Athletics Federations Hall of Fame when it was founded in 2012, alongside leg-

ends such as Jesse Owens and Carl Lewis. In 1969 she discovered she had multiple sclerosis and would battle the condition for the rest of her life. In 2000, she was one of the final bearers to hand the Olympic torch to Cathy Freeman before she lit the flame at the Sydney Games.

Honours for sporting legends Gould and Clark

OLYMPIC swimming champion Shane Gould has received an AM for her significant service to swimming and to water safety programs in developing countries.

Gould gained international stardom as a 15 year old at the 1972 Munich Olympics when she won three gold medals and set world records in the 200m freestyle, 200m individual medley and 400m freestyle while under the coaching of Forbes and Ursula Carlile at Ryde Swimming Pool. She also grabbed a silver

$10

medal in the 800m freestyle and a bronze medal in the 100m freestyle. Gould simultaneously held all freestyle world records from 100 to 1500 metres from December 12, 1971 to September 1, 1972 - an incredible achievement for one so young. FORMER Gladesville resident and Australian

womens cricket captain Belinda Clark was named an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for distinguished service to cricket. Clark, who was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 1997, led Australia to two World Cup triumphs in 1997 and 2005 and was the first and only person to score a double century (229 not out) in a women’s one day international. A prolific scoring batsman, Clark played 15 Tests, 118 ODIs and one Twenty20 for Australia,

averaging more than 45 in the Test and one-day arena, and is Australia’s leading run scorer in the 50-over game. Belinda, who starred for Balmain Cricket Club, has proved a fine ambassador for the sport - she has been a member of the ICC Women’s Committee for more than a decade and continues to be a key influencer in the game as Cricket Australia’s Head of Junior Cricket. Cuthbert, Gould and Clark join a distinguished

crop of Australian female sporting icons recognised in the Australia Day Honours list. Others include squash great Heather McKay and netball legend Liz Ellis (AO); tennis queen Evonne Goolagong-Cawley (AC); Olympic swimming gold medallist Susie O’Neill, basketball dynamo Michelle Timms, golfing legends Karrie Webb and Jan Stephenson and Hockeyroos’ Olympic gold medalwinning captain Rechelle Hawkes (AM).

Dragon MacDragonface escaped from the Scout Museum and jumped aboard the train with lots of excited passengers. Aren’t humans supposed to be scared of dragons? Not these brave humans! The kids held onto the dragon so he wouldn’t fall off the train when he let out an almighty ROAR! Bobo on track to break goal-scoring record

BRAZILIAN striker Bobo (pictured) scored twice in Sydney FC’s 3-1 Australia Day demolition of Melbourne Victory , setting a club goal-scoring record along the way.

The Sky Blues improved their season tally to 42 goals in 18 games with a comefrom-behind 3-1 win away to Melbourne Victory in last Friday night’s ‘Big Blue’. Sydney FC Head Coach Graham Arnold regards his star-studded attack as the most lethal combination the Hyundai A-League has ever seen. ”The front four I believe is probably the greatest front line in A-League history,” Arnold said at his post-match press conference. ”We know we can score goals and damage teams with our quality. ”When we play to structure and focus more on the football rather than battle and the fight, and we get some

fluency, we are such a special team.” Bobo’s brace took his tally to 18 for the season to surpass ex-Sky Blues hitman Marc Janko’s previous record of 16 goals in a single campaign. The 33-year-old former Besiktas and Gremio striker has thrived playing for the side proving to be one of the most dominant in Hyundai A-League history and appears a certainty to finish with this season’s golden boot. He is on top of the goalscoring charts by four goals, ahead of Melbourne City’s Ross McCormack, who is now back in the UK with his Hyundai A-League future uncertain. Bobo’s is 10 goals clear of the rest of the chasing pack (Berisha, Mierzejewski, Nabbout, Kaludjerovic – all on eight goals). The big question now is whether he can beat the Hyundai A-League record of goals in a regular season, which is 25 by City’s Uruguayan star Bruno Fornaroli. Bobo needs eight goals from the remaining nine ALeague games to claim the record. He gets another chance to add to his tally on Friday night when Sydney FC host lowly Wellington Phoenix, a team he scored a hat-trick against when they met earlier this season. Sydney FC are promoting a “Mates Night Out” with a special promotional price of $40 for two adult tickets. Sporties’ heartfelt tribute to lawn bowls champ Stella McFarlane

GLADESVILLE Sporties are mourning the death of champion lawn bowler Stella McFarlane. Stella - one of Gladesville Womens Bowling Club’s accomplished stalwarts - died a premature death from breast cancer after receiving ongoing treatment over the past five years which she endured with great courage and hope. A large contingent of Gladesville WBC members participated in the farewell to their friend and esteemed member at her funeral on January 24. Stella was a lifelong friend of current Gladesville WBC president Lynette Macdonald, having grown up together in Boronia Park where they

went to primary school and then moved on to Hunters Hill High School. Both shared many sporting activities over their lives including Physical Culture, netball, touch football and soccer and then moving on to play competitive bowls at Gladesville. During her time at Gladesville WBC, Stella was a winning member of the Pairs, Triples and Fours competitions and late last year clinched the Minor Singles Championship - despite undergoing chemotherapy treatment at the time and playing in a force 10 gale and in chill-

ing temperatures. During 2017 she was also presented with a Merit Pin from Women’s Bowls NSW in recognition of her services to Gladesville Womens Bowling Club. Stella held the position of Secretary until mid 2017 before taking up the role of treasurer and according to Gladesville WBC stalwart Jill Forster was an inspiration to all. Ever obliging, Stella fulfilled these positions with energy and competence but also coupled with a joyful sense of humour. Gladesville Women bowlers formed a Guard of Honour for Stella at her

funeral and at her request wore “something pink”. “More than three hundred people attended the funeral at Macquarie Park representing local organisations in which she had participated, not only in a sporting arena but in memorable concerts and reviews over the yearsleaving wonderful memories for her friends and family,” reflected Jill. “Stella touched many people with her bright and happy personality and was a loyal friend to all of those she loved and cared for. “Our thoughts are with Stella’s family and friends. Rest in Peace Stella.”

Teams walk or run to fundraise and beat cancer but the event is also open to the whole community to come down and enjoy all the live entertainment and activities. It’s about taking something really serious that affects too many of us and doing something about it in a fun way so we can work towards a better future for all.” “In the last five years the community has raised more than $5,000 and in 2018 we are hoping to raise another $120,000,” added Mrs Naran. Barton bags 7-71 to tame Tigers in thriller

ENGLAND’S quest to rebuild its fast bowling stocks for future Ashes Test campaigns has unearthed a fine prospect in the NSW Premier Cricket first grade ranks. Twenty two year old Sussex left arm quick Adam Barton (pictured) has proven he could develop into a first class paceman of the highest calibre with impressive performances in County cricket and since arriving to play with the North Sydney club in the Sydney grade competition.

Last Saturday at North Sydney Oval the English recruit produced a match winning wicket haul to orchestrate a dramatic nine run first innings victory over fifth placed Sydney. Barton bagged the superb figures of 7-71 off 20 overs to sink the Tigers, who were cruising at 3-236 at one stage in pursuit of the home side’s tally of 332. Sydney trio Justin Mosca (83 runs off 163 balls), skipper Harry Dalton (66 off 119 balls) and Matthew Rodgers (56 off 98 balls) chalked up half centuries but all to no avail as the Sussex speedster ripped the heart of the Tigers’ batting line up with a devastating afternoon bowling spell. Mosca and Rodgers gave the Tigers a rollicking start with an opening stand of 108 and when both departed along with number three Tristen McDonald (19) the visitors were still well placed at 3-197. Last match centurion Anthony Mosca was Barton’s first scalp when caught behind by keeper James Newton for 20 runs. Barton then turned the match with his left arm seamers to remove key Sydney batsmen Beau McClintock and Ben Manenti for ducks and all rounder Nathan Sowter for 1 with 244 runs on the board. When Dalton was caught by Anjan Oberai off Barton for a well compiled 66 the Tigers had slumped to 8-266 and were staring at defeat. Sydney rallied with Nic Bills (23 not out) and Ryan Felsch (19) carrying the score to 306 before Felsch was dismissed by the Englishman after cracking two boundaries and a six in a cameo knock. A revved up Burton sealed victory in a thrilling finale when he bowled tailender

EASTWOOD St Andrews AFC is gearing up for another big year in the Gladesville-Hornsby Football Association. 2018 promises to be an eventful season for the Saints who are celebrating the 60th anniversary of the club’s foundation at Eastwood Oval, where they still play today. Club President Michael Masulans is rightfully proud of the club’s history. “I’ve been involved with this club for 20 years now, and one of the best things about it is that some of the founding members from 60 years ago are also still involved,” he said. “It shows how important the club is to the local community, which is why our motto is Building Community Through

Ryde City Council recently announced they would be creating Live Sites for the public to watch the World Cup matches and Eastwood St Andrews are in discussions with council to hopefully have one of these sites at Eastwood Oval to coincide with their 60th anniversary Back To Eastwood Day celebrations. Last season the club boasted over 550 soccer registrations which included four girls/womens teams as well as over 200 netball players. The Saints are hoping to increase these numbers this year with a $100 discount available to players under

18 years of age and attending school via the State Government’s Active Kids Program. This offer is only available from February 1 which is when junior registrations will open online. Senior (18 years plus) registrations are already open online via the link in the registration section of www.eastwoodstandrews.org and there’ll be a Registration Day at Eastwood Oval this Saturday February 3 from 11am to 4pm There’ll also be a FREE soccer clinic from 10am to 11am on the same day for any junior players wanting to try soccer before signing up for the season.

The club has come a long way in 60 years and I, along with the rest of our committee and members, are looking forward to celebrating this milestone,” Michael added. The season will end with a huge Presentation Day/evening at T.G Millner Field with plans for a fireworks display to finish the year with a bang. Prior to that the annual Back To Eastwood Day will be held on Saturday June 16 which is the same day as the Socceroos’ opening FIFA World Cup fixture against France.

The club’s cricketing contingent are ready to display their batting, bowling and fielding skills at the annual Pink Stumps Day on North Ryde RSL’s back oval. Men and women players including seniors and juniors will bring the magic of the Pink Test into North Ryde when they contest a 30 overs per side challenge match from 10am. North Ryde RSL Cricket Club president Kel Gray said the annual charity match makes a real difference by helping place McGrath Breast Care

Nurses in communities across Australia. “Pink Stumps Day provides an opportunity for our local community to participate in the spirit, energy and international phenomenon of the Pink Test,” said Kel. “By bringing the magic home it raises vital funds to make life for families experiencing breast cancer just that little bit easier,” he said. “It is a great day out to bring the family, enjoy a picnic lunch and watch an exciting game of cricket. The club is inviting friends and families

to get involved with lots of fun activities.” “Wear pink on the day and have some money on hand to donate to the McGrath Foundation,” he said. There’ll be a raffle, barbecue and Pink Bakery which will be held on the day.
