Anthony Qi was born in Buffalo, NY, but raised in Houston in a household that strongly nurtured education and exploration
After high school, he earned admission to the prestigious Business Honors Program at the University of Texas at Austin one of the nation's most competitive undergraduate business programs.
At UT Austin, Anthony majored in Finance and minored in Spanish, graduating in 2018 with a major GPA of 3 5/4 0 His major refined his analytical skills, while the honors curriculum exposed him to various intense cases and group projects.
He had earlier spent a semester at the Universidad de San Andrés in Buenos Aires in 2015, studying program management while also getting a rare opportunity to learn the Spanish language in an immersive environment
Building Skills in Finance and Analysis
Anthony's professional path began in investing, where sharp analysis and the ability to recognize opportunities ahead of the curve were essential. He gained early experience through internships at Goshawk Global Investments, Nine Ten Capital Management, and Intertek in Shanghai.
These roles laid the groundwork for his ability to navigate diverse industries and cultures while keeping decisions rooted in data.
He began his full-time career at Highside Global Management, a $250 million fundamental long/short equity hedge fund, where he spent almost four years sourcing investment ideas and managing sector coverage across advertising, transportation & logistics
Disciplined and with a balanced risk-reward mindset, Anthony possessed an uncanny ability to get to the root cause of market mispricing and make sure that portfolio choices were based on evidence, not assumptions.
Expanding into Product Development
Though Anthony came from a finance background, his career shifted towards software development and product design As the first employee at a startup building research tools for hedge funds and investigative journalists, he expanded beyond analysis to create products from the ground up, and also had a critical role in designing features, finding clients, and building partnerships.
He built tools to track regulatory investigations and industry payments while contextualizing technical delivery against a strategic backdrop His work encompassed UI/UX feedback, data analysis, client development, and business development, showcasing his versatility and hands-on work ethic.
Key Projects and Contributions
Anthony has contributed to several projects that have affected product development and processes. At a research software startup, he developed the first version of a regulatory investigations tool that allowed customers to see activity from agencies like the SEC and FDA He also generated a significant portion of the original datasets needed to launch Canary Data.
At Highside Global Management, he expanded his fund's sector weightings to include semiconductors, software, and packaging. He also systematized implementing alternative data into earnings forecasts by building out statistical models that provided concrete ranges of expected outcomes for the team going into earnings and other catalysts This increased forecast accuracy and the risk management process.
