Lighting Design|CUADRADO Spring 2012

The design of CUADRADO was focused on a contemporary design that would reflect the work of Piet Mondrion. Mondrion emphasized on the use of geometrical shape and right angles. The concept behind CUADRADO was to design a mass market illumination product that the buyer becomes the designer and can manipulate squares to different variations to meet the need of the buyer. Because the device uses perfect squares and rights angles to hinge the boards together, without the use of glue or adhesive, CUADRADO can be either hung like a pendant fixture or assembled as a stationary light. Coinciding with the Mondrion beliefs, it follows a certain set of rules of color theory. Each board is colored with a complementary color (orange and blue) and backed with a neutral (white). When the light is turned on the reflecting light off the colored panels reflects the complementary color creating a blending effect. Along with color reflection the shadows created by CUADRADO are geometrical and proportional because of the perfect squares that make up the fixture.
