A VIEW FROM MATAWAN’S PAST- LAKE LEFFERTS
By Pat Noble
This is a view of downtown Matawan from Lake Lefferts. Ravine Drive is on the left and the Methodist Episcopal Church steeple can be seen between the trees. The lakefront looks newly landscaped, so the photo is likely early 1930s.

Matawan Creek was dammed in 1928 at Ravine Drive to form the lake. The creek passes through the dam and is joined by Gravelly Brook after the latter flows through the Lake
Matawan dam at Main Street. From the meadows to the Raritan Bay, Matawan Creek is affected by the tides. Please consider joining the Matawan Historical Society to support our work. There are lots of fun and exciting events in the works for 2023. June 2-4 will be our 300th Anniversary of Burrowes Mansion Celebration and Battle Re-enactment.
