SUSTAINABLE DESIGN IN A SLUM COMMUNITY(HYUMAT) IN KATHMANDU(NEPAL) UW LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE 702 STUDIO In Hyumat, doing laundry is not only a kind of housework but a social activity. Women do laundry together outside while chatting with each other. However, waste water after doing laundry, which is a large amount with acceptable quality, is dumped on the land even though the unreliable tap water supply is one of the main problems on site. So I'm committed to recycling laundry water by localizing the Laundry Water Reuse System that first being practiced in California. Considering residents' need for a greener community, more gathering space and some women training programs, I try to create a space where people can do laundry, irrigate greenery and have training programs like biodegraded soap making. Soaps are made with plant product grown with laundry water and can be used to wash cloth to make sure the waste water is safe to irrigate.

Also I tried to make a connection with my folks products. Boo's rain water filters offer treated fresh water to wash cloth; people can be trained to produce Xinyu's planter in the outdoor classroom.
