CONCHITA WURST In the two months since she won Eurovision, Conchita Wurst has become a global star. Here she reflects on homophobia, gay marriage, Vladimir Putin (‘a very handsome man’) – and her dreams of winning a Grammy. The photoshoot is in full swing. The starlet is a vision: she flicks her long dark hair, pouts, and expertly twirls her rainbow-colored couture gown, which swishes around her like a waterfall. "Let's try a sultry one," the photographer says and she turns up the oomph. Lit up by the bay window behind her, she is at once angelic and full-on glamorous. Her face is all fluttering eyelashes and glitter, accessorized with a thick, softlooking beard.

their lure they virtually disappeared. Today, Conchita is a distinctly modern reimagining of the phenomenon: in drag, in control, in 6inch tangerine heels. Despite having come straight from the Pride stage, she is fresh and poised: there is no sign of frustration at the long hours, traffic and delays that have marked the day, just concern that her fans had to wait an extra half hour. Immediately warm and welcoming, she is disarmingly coquettish. “It’s so nice to meet you,” she purrs.

Conchita is also a way to protect Tom’s private life. “I don’t take pictures without makeup and most people are nice and respectful. But I hate it when

and “normal”, as well as a vehicle to bring his message to the entire world in a clear and unmistakable way. Appearances, genders and ethnicity do not matter at all when it comes to the dignity and freedom of individuals (or as Austrians would say: “They are WURST”). Tom and Conchita agree that “Only the individual person is important. Everybody should be free to live life as he or she sees fit, as long as nobody gets harmed.” “It takes a while before someone can steal my heart There are many forms of love, such as lust and affection, but in whatever form it takes, I’m quite slow to get into it – which is why I’m not worried about who I meet now that I’m better known, as that won’t change. I hate to wait Especially when it comes to being on TV shows, where you’re waiting most of the time: you have rehearsal, then you have to wait till your appearance. I prefer continuous movement, so I have to entertain myself and not get bored.”

Can you tell us a little bit about the character “Conchita Wurst”? First, I wouldn’t call me a character, because I’m a real person. What you see is what you get. Friends would say that I’m a very funny and loving woman. They are totally right! But let’s start at the beginning. I was born in the highlands of Colombia. My parents took me to Germany where I had a wonderful childhood in Berlin. Four years ago I met my handsome husband Jacque in Paris. Love at first sight. We decided to start our new life in Vienna and here we are.. still totally in love. In 2007 you placed second on Austria’s Starmania competing as Tom Neuwirth—the name you were given at birth. When did Tom introduce Conchita to the world? The thing is that I really don’t know who this Tom is. I heard he is a singer too, but unfortunately I never met him yet. I have to say, it’s a bit impolite of Mister Neuwirth that he never called me after all this confusion about us both. If the media would have said that I looked like her, I would have called her. How did Conchita Wurst get her name? As we all do: from our parents. But the funny thing is that ‘Conchita’ stands for femininity and ‘wurst’ for.. you know ‘wurst’ is German and means
