FOURTH YEAR | PROFESSOR: JIA ZHOU
BY USING HOUDINI SOFTWARE WITH STABLE DIFFUSION PLUGINS TO GENERATE FORMS, THE PROJECT SEEKS TO TEST THE LIMITATION OF AND CONTROL DESIGNERS HAVE OVER MACHINELEARNING PLATFROMS.
A CONCERT HALL BUILT FROM THE REMNANTS OF AN EXISTING BUILDING ON THE SITE WHILE REINVENTING SPACIAL CONDITIONS BY CARVING OLD BUILDING STRUCTURES THAT ARE NESTED WITHIN THE NEW SKIN. THE PROJECT EXPLORES THE IDEA OF OBJECTS WITHIN OBJECTS AND USES AI TO STUDY FORMS BASED ON THE ANATOMY OF A FISH (ORGANIC SHAPES WITH SHARP DETAILS)

BROADWAY ON TOP BRINGS THE STREETS OF BROADWAY AND ITS EVERYDAY LIVELINESS TO THE ROOF OF THE BROADWAY TRADE BUILDING. MUNDANE ENCOUNTERS ON THE STREETS LIKE VENDORS, MARKETS, SHOPS, PEDESTRIANS, BIKERS, SKATERS, PERFORMERS WILL COME TOGETHER TO CELEBRATE THE PEOPLE AND THE CULTURES THAT MADE BROADWAY WHAT IT IS TODAY AND WHAT IT CAN BE IN THE FUTURE.

THIRD YEAR | PROFESSOR: MARY CASPER
THE PROJECT AIMS TO PROVIDE A LIVING-LEARNING ENVIRONMENT FOR PEOPLE WHO PURSUE THE ART OF TAILORING. INSPIRED BY THE BODILY MOVEMENTS OF SEWING, THE PROJECT USES CURVATURES AND ORGANIC FORMS TO EXPRESS INTERACTIVE AND HARMONIOUS LIVING SPACE, WHILE RESPONDING TO THE LACK OF GREEN SPACES, RECREATIONAL SPACES AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AREAS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD.

THE ENTRANCE ALLOWS ONE TO IMMEDIATELY EXPERIENCE THE CURVATURE FORM WHILE BEING PRESENTED WITH THE VIEW OF FABRIC ROLLS, SEWING MATERIALS AND OTHER TOOLS FROM THE STORAGE ROOM.
THE CENTRAL COURTYARD HOSTS MOST OF ITS RESIDENTS’ DAILY RITUALS: DYING AND DRYING FABRICS IN COURTYARD PITS; LEARNING AND SEWING IN THE WORKSHOPS, CIRCULATING AROUND THE BUILDING OR JUST RESTING AND HANGING OUT IN THE PUBLIC SEATING NEAR BY...
THE WORKSHOP AREA USES CURTAINS AS WALLS, ALLOWING THE INTERIOR TO FEEL MORE IMMERSIVE AND CONNECTED INSTEAD OF CONFINED AND ISOLATED. THE PUSH AND PULL CURVATURES THROUGHOUT THE BUILDING NOT ONLY PROVIDE ADDITIONAL GREEN SPACES FOR THE EXTERIOR BALCONIES, BUT ALSO NEAR THE WORKSHOP AREAS TO ENRICH THE WORKING AND LEARNING ENVIRONMENT.
ALL UNIT PLANS PROVIDE PRIVATE BEDROOMS WHILE PUSHING THE SHARED PROGRAMS NEAR THE WINDOW, CLOSER TO THE BALCONIES, ENCOURAGING PEOPLE GO OUT, HANG OUT AND OCCUPY THE EXTERIOR BALCONIES.

THE STUDY OF WOOD JOINTS
SECOND YEAR | PROFESSOR: HADRIAN PREDOCK
FROM REIMAGINING THE POSSIBILITIES OF VERNACULAR AND AUTHORED WOOD JOINTS, THE PROJECT BUILDS A LIVING AND STUDY FURNITURE THAT MAXIMIZES THE GIVEN AREA, WHILE MAINTAINING THE FLOW AND CURVATURE OF THE WOOD JOINTS.
THE READING ROOM
SECOND YEAR | PROFESSOR: HADRIAN PREDOCK
FOLLOWING UP WITH THE STUDY OF WOOD JOINTS, THE PROJECT PROPOSES A READING AREA LOCATED IN THE LOS ANGELES HISTORIC PARK THAT CELEBRATES THE NEIGHBORHOOD’S VIBRANCY, THE LIVELINESS OF THE PARK AND THE RITUAL OF ITS PEOPLE THROUGHOUT THE DAY.
THE DESIGN USES CURVATURES FROM THE EXISTING INFRASTRUCTURES OF THE PARK WHILE CONTINUE TO EXPLORE THE POSSIBILTY OF HUMAN INTERACTION WITH CURVES AND WOODS.
A STORYBOARD IS DEVELOPED ALONG WITH THE DESIGN PROCESS TO PAINT A CLEARER NARRATIVE OF HOW USERS MIGHT INTERACT WITH THE READING ROOM.
THE PROJECT TARGETS PEOPLE WITH A VARIETY OF AGE GROUPS AND OCCUPATIONS IN THE AREA.
BUILT UPON THE FLEXIBILITY OF WOOD JOINTS IN THE EARLIER PROJECTS, THE READING ROOM ALLOWS FORMAL STRUCTURE TO EVOLVE, TRANSFORM, AND ADAPT ACCORDING TO THE FUNCTION THEY OF ITS TARGETED USERS THROUGHOUT THE DAY.

PROGRESS FROM THE READING ROOM, THE PROJECT INCORPORATES CURVATURES IN FURNITURES FOR HUMAN BODY COMFORT, WHILE USING ORGANIC FORMS AND GREENERIES TO MIMIC THE EXISTING TOPOGRAPHY OF THE LOS ANGELES HISTORIC PARKS AND ITS OTHER ARTIFICIAL STRUCTURES.
A VARIETY OF PROGRAMS LIKE OFFICES, READING ROOMS, STUDY CARRELS AND MULTI-PURPOSE HALL ARE PLACED AND DESIGNED BASED ON NOISE LEVEL AND ACCESS TO PUBLIC AND DAYLIGHTING. CENTER MAIN CIRCULATION OPTIMIZES ACCESSIBILITY WHILE SECONDARY CIRCULATIONS OFFERS HABITABLE PROGRAMS ON THE EXTERIOR OF THE LESS QUIET SIDE OF THE LIBRARY.

SECOND YEAR | PROFESSOR: MYRNA AYOUB
PASADENA’S PUBLIC SPACES ACCUMULATE IN ONE AREA AND DEDICATE TO LEISURE AND CONSUMPTION (STRIP MALLS, RESTAURANTS, SHOPPING STREETS, ETC). THIS ARRANGEMENT HAS PLAYED A KEY ROLE IN ZONING AND SEPARATING DIFFERENT SOCIAL CLASSES AS WELL AS ETHNIC GROUPS FOR DECADES.
ADDITIONALLY, THIS LAYOUT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE UNEVEN DISTRIBUTION OF GREEN SPACE AND WATER ACCESS. THE PROJECT HENCE PROPOSES A DESIGN THAT INCORPORATES PUBLIC SPACES THAT ARE SMALLER, MORE SPREAD OUT, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY NOT A PLACE OF SERVICE AND CONSUMPTION WITHIN THE RESIDENTIAL AREAS. THESE PUBLIC SPACES WILL BE CONNECTED TO THE GROUND LEVEL THROUGH A SYSTEM OF ANGLED TUNNELS THAT NOT ONLY PROVIDE SUNLIGHT, VEGETATION, AND VENTILATION FOR THE UNDERGROUND CONDITION, BUT ALSO BECOME A PART OF THE VERTICAL CIRCULATION.
FOCUSING ON THE WELLNESS OF THE MIND, THE PROJECT INCLUDES A VARIETY OF ENTERTAINMENT CENTERS LIKE RESTAURANTS, BARS, KARAOKE, SHOPPING MALLS, ETC LOCATED NEAR THE WATER FILLED DITCH TO UTILIZE THE FUN AND FANTASTICAL VIEWS OF LIVING UNDER THE WATER.
THE DESIGN ALLOWS ALL RESIDENTIALS WITH EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES TO LIVE, WORK, AND PLAY IN HARMONY, WHILE PROMOTING VERTICAL ECOSYSTEM, INTERCONNECTED COMMUNITY, WALKABILITY, AND EXTRAORDINARY SPATIAL CONDITIONS UNDERGROUND AND UNDERWATER.
THE EXHIBITION OF INTERACTIVE MEDIA
FIRST YEAR | PROFESSOR: SELWYN TING
THE IDEA OF PEOPLE ENGAGING WITH ART DRIVES THE PROJECT TO INVESTIGATE BODY MOVEMENTS, AND HOW IT CAN BE TRANSLATED INTO THE SPACE IN WHICH PEOPLE INTERACT WITH THE ART. THE ARCHITECTURE THEN BECOMES THE PROJECTION OF ITS AUDIENCE MOVEMENTS AND A MEDIUM THAT ALLOWS THE AUDIENCE TO BECOME THE SUBJECT OF EXHIBITION THEMSELVES. THIS ESTABLISH AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE AUDIENCE TO NOT ONLY INTERACT WITH THE ART BUT ALSO EXPERIENCE THE ART AS THEY INTERACT WITH THEMSELVES.
ADDITIONALLY, THE PROJECT AIMS TO CREATE A COHERENT EXPERIENCE BY PLACING OPENINGS THAT ALIGN FROM ONE BUILDING TO THE NEXT, LETTING PEOPLE SEE A LITTLE BIT OF WHAT HAPPENS IN THE UPCOMING PROGRAM WHILE CREATING A SENSE OF EXCITEMENT AND ANTICIPATION AMONG THE PARTICIPANTS.
