Story of My Grandpa Ever since I was a little girl, I can remember hearing stories about my Poppy Bill. The stories came from people around my small town and county, friends, family members, people who liked him and some who did not, and a few were even from him, too. They were stories about how he was a wild, young man growing up, about dancing and being out all night, about being flagged over along the road by a pretty girl with black hair (that was my Grandma Carol), about hunting parties with the guys at Chippawa Lodge, about being the “Grand Poobah” of his many groups, about playing cards almost every night with the guys (which he still does even at eighty), about his business ventures, about his helping the community, about his travels, etc. Over the last few years, he has been telling me not necessarily just stories because any more. These stories, some exactly are the same ones he had told me many times before, end a bit differently. The endings of these stories are filled with reflection and meaning. They end with him actually explaining the why he did what he did and how it affect him… how it made him feel, which was always prefaced by or followed by “just between you and me”… “Just between you and me”… When my grandpa tells me “just between you and me”, even at thirty-three years old, I still feel like a seven year old whose best friend just told them the biggest secret in the whole world and its “just between you and me”. In May, I had just completed the first year of my master’s degree and I was home in Pennsylvania visiting. As I sat there talking with my grandpa and he asked me what I was going to do when I graduated; I explained that I planned to pursue my doctoral degree. He inquired about the details and when I would be completely done with everything; so I explained if I am lucky and everything works out, I will be 100% May 2018 and he has to be there when I graduate. He thought for a moment and said he was sorry but he was not going to be there because he was going to be “gone” by then. I told him he did not know what he was talking about and he will be there whether he liked it or not. We gently went back and forth for a while before changing the subject but during that debate, the beautiful text by Dylan Thomas came to mind… and everything else poured out.

Performance Notes ď&#x201A;ˇ

The section from rehearsal letter M until the end is a very intense and passionate section of the work. Although, I feel it is important for everyone to be louder and demanding, strings must remember they are accompanying the baritone and not over powering him

Please put a lot of expression into the performance of this piece, especially the baritone. Feel free to shape the lines as you see fit as long as it is full of drama.

Violins- In measures 142-145, it does not really matter what pitches that you play in these measures as long as they are high, dissonant and played with ricochet bowing using the notated rhythm.
