Hispanic and French Festivals Photos by Gretchen Sousa, text by Kathleen Walsh

Students were treated to an assortment of delectable Hispanic and French food items prepared by Spanish and French students on October 8 and November 5 respectively. While students filled up on sweet and savory foods, they were also treated to music, a mime, a mariachi band, and activities from the respective countries. The French class also mimicked a common French practice of writing notes and tying them onto a bridge. In this case, they tied them to the railings along the perimeter of the lake. Students enjoyed calm extended lunch breaks while they appreciated the food of these two different cultures. The plentiful food and music seemed to be a welcome respite from the regular school day. Students were lucky to enjoy good weather on these days, as many chose to take their lunch on the lawn and soak up the atmosphere. Students can only hope that the Chinese classes will soon follow suit.

The festivals were very popular among the students, with many expressing their approval and hope of more to come.

A variety of dishes, prepared by the students themselves, were the highlights of the festivals. Fan favorite dishes included the yellow rice and dulce de leche.

This year Drama Director Mr. Thomas Bazar tackled the Shakespearean play Macbeth. Often deemed as “the Scottish play,” Macbeth’s production history is filled with myth and legend. Many performers will not say “Macbeth” in a theatre, as it is said to bring havoc and curses upon the actors. Luckily, this year’s production did not yield catastrophe. With seniors Benjamin Greenspan and Nicole Archer leading the play as Lord and Lady Macbeth, the over 500 year old play was brought to

life again in the Upper School’s Butterfly Garden. Students, parents, and faculty alike were privy to state of the art sword fighting, lighting, and sound effects. With minimal set and props, the play seemed to focus solely on the infamously gory and intense plot, as well as the impassioned acting. From sword fights to beheadings to professional costuming and lighting, the production seems to have thrilled many students and faculty alike. Mr. Thomas Bazar, finishing his third production at Benjamin was certainly proud of his actors, set designers, sound and lighting crew, and backstage crew. Homecoming Shenanigans

This year’s Homecoming was filled with fun, foolishness, and frolicking. From obstacle courses to male cheerleading and real cheerleading, this year’s Homecoming was a bonanza of school spirit. As the Dazzlers kick-lined in chrome outfits, the Powderpuff footballers kicked off a fan favorite event. And all were surprised by the senior’s show of “not-so-covert” dance moves in their Male Cheerleading routine. Organized by the Student Council, Homecoming went off without a hitch. However, students from each grade brought the pitch with this year’s edition of karaoke, featuring such gems as “Build Me Up Buttercup” and “ I Will Survive.” However, to many, the highlight of the entire Homecoming week was Mr. Derek Harse’s win during the teacher obstacle course. Fall Football

The Benjamin football team, lead by Head Coach Ronald Ream, finished their season early this November with a record of three wins and seven losses. This year the Buccaneers featured twelve seniors, led by captains Thomas Camp and Trevor Ross. Players of the Year for the Bucs included kicker Adrian Perez-Vargas, the team’s leading scorer, running back Thomas Camp, the team’s leading rusher, and linebacker Max Chesnes who led the entire conference in tackles. Other outstanding players included wide receivers Michael Lay and Tyler Kasten. Although the Bucs faced a challenging season the players still kept their heads high as some played their final moments of high school foortball. Girls Soccer Photos by Andy Weir, text by Michael Mullery

The Girls Varsity Soccer team is off to another incredible start this season, with a record of 9-1-1, with their only loss coming against Oxbridge. The lady Bucs opened the season with a 7-1 thrashing of Lincoln Park, and have not looked back since, outscoring their opponents by an average of 6.2 goals per game in winning efforts. Senior Gabi Aguirre has been impressive in goal, allowing only seven goals all season while posting five shoutouts. The losses of University of Florida commit, senior Giovana Giraldo and junior Riley Johnston to ACL injuries prior to the season was a tough blow to the team, as they have played crucial roles to the team’s success in the past. However, fellow future Gators, senior Mayra Pelayo (14 goals) and junior Kylie Borislow (10 goals) have been huge assets for the Bucs once again, as well as second leading goal scorer, senior Katie O’Hare, who has 11 goals on the season. The team will need to continue their phenomenal play if they hope to capture their first ever state title.
