Potentate’s Message

By Elwood Paschal

I

would like to thank everyone who came out to the Annual Business Meeting and Election. Being elected and serving as Potentate of our Temple for 2015 is an honor and a privilege. The turn out for the Units and Clubs Meeting was fantastic. Working together, this is going to be an awesome year. Membership, dues and retention are the top projects this year. Although we have chairmen and committees, we all need to work on recruiting new Nobles, keeping in touch with those who are not active and finding out what we can do to keep the Nobles we have. The Potentate’s Ball is Khedive’s American Bandstand. Lady Pat and I hope this will be a relaxing, enjoyable

evening. Come on out and listen to music of the 50’s and 60’s! The Branson Trip is an affordable chance to get away and see another part of our beautiful country. I have been assured that travel on a bus is more fun than I can imagine. The Divan and I are here to serve you. If there is anything we can do to help you or you have any suggestions, we are only a phone call or an email away. Once again, thank you for this incredible experience. Remember – “It’s All About the Kids” Yours in the Faith, Elwood Paschal 536-2118-C el.pat@cox.net

Khedive Divan

Assistant Rabban By John Howe

F

irst, thank you for your support and confidence in advancing me to the office of Assistant Rabban at the January business meeting. It’s hard to believe that the last two years have flown by like they have. Thanks to the dues increase there is some breathing room in the temple budget. The 2015 budget shows that we expect to transfer some unspent revenue into the building fund at the end of the year. Good, but…it’s all predicated on meeting our other revenue producing goals, mainly from fundraising (Rodeo & Seafood Fest) and building/property rentals. That’s not enough. We MUST increase income from the building & property. These assets represent the predominant capability we have to produce better revenue streams from the public domain and avoid or minimize future dues increases. If you’re a fan of the “Gold Rush” TV series like I am, you know that when the miners are in gold-rich pay dirt, they’re happy & making a lot of money. When the gold starts to run out, they start searching for better ground. Finding new gold

requires hard work, and is frustrating, time consuming and costly. We have a lot of un-mined area in our building and property that we need to put some time, energy and money into to find some new gold. The building needs a lot of renovation work in the interior. I’ll be happy to take anyone on a short tour and point out all of the things that I see that are too numerous to mention here. The money isn’t available to do all of it at once, so we must carefully pick the projects that have the greatest potential for increased return in the shortest amount of time AND cost the least to complete. The outside areas, the front field (picnic area) and the back field (think rodeo & car show), are underutilized.

The back field gets used about 15 days out of the year. Yes, we sometimes have cars parked back there, but not on a consistent basis. We can and need to do better than that. We need new ideas as to how we can increase utilization of these assets, both in cold and warm weather, and thus, increase revenue from them. Your Divan has some ideas, and some have been suggested to us. None of them are the all-in-one answer. We need your thoughts and ideas on how to create a steady, predictable income in these two areas. I’m asking you to bring your new ideas on how to increase our revenue stream to the table. If you think that you have a good idea, call me. We can meet and discuss it, and I’ll help you get it developed enough to present it to the entire Divan. If you know someone who you believe can help us, let’s discuss that also. “We’ve always done it that way” and “we can’t do that because”, isn’t the kind of help that the Temple needs. We need fresh ideas from people who are willing to think outside the box, put some time and effort into project development, and help us attain completion. As always, please feel free to e-mail or call me. Yours in the Faith John Howe Assistant Rabban

obles and Ladies, I am deeply humbled for the trust and confidence you have given me and electing me as the 103rd Oriental Guide of Khedive Temple. The First Oriental to be elected in the 106th year of our temples history. Growing up in the streets of Baguio City in the Philippines in the 60’s, fighting to survive and fighting to get ahead, not knowing what future lies ahead. I could not even imagine that I am now in this prestigious position as your Oriental Guide for 2015. “lt’s a dream come true”. Forty six years ago I dreamt about coming to America. It was just a dream until the U.S. Navy and the United States of America gave me a chance. This truly is a great country, the land of the free and the land of opportunity. Now, I am given another chance to serve you as a member of the Divan. I had been taught that God created us as unique individuals with a specific purpose. I am thanking the nobility for giving me

a chance to serve you as your Oriental Guide for 2015 and a chance to fulfill our purpose as Shriners to help our Children. I am truly blessed to have Lady Violy to help me with this journey. I am confident that with the tutelage and guidance of our previous leaders, I will go through this experience with ease. Congratulations to ILL. Elwood Paschal and Lady Pat. May you have smooth sailing this year. Lastly, one of my assignment as “OG” is coordinator of the Hi-Noble. I am asking all of our Unit heads and Club Presidents to support our Hi-Noble and encourage all our Nobles to be a HiNoble Booster. Without your support this magazine will not exist. On Behalf of my Lady Violy, we are forever grateful for your love and support. Thank you. Yours in Faith, Oscar Obsuna Oriental Guide 2015

Khedive Units

Director of Uniformed Units

I

llustrious Sir, Illustrious Sirs, Members of the Divan, and Nobles All: First, I would like to congratulate Illustrious Sir Elwood on his nomination to the office of Illustrious Potentate, evidence of his hard work and dedication to the Khedive Shrine Center. Secondly, congratulations to the Divan for their election and advancement in leadership for 2015. I look forward to serving with Illustrious Sir Elwood and the Divan in making this an exciting and fun filled year for Khedive. I would like to thank Illustrious Sir Elwood for appointing me as Director of Uniformed Units for 2015. It is an honor to serve in this position once again. Al Kinchen, Assistant Director, and I have a busy year ahead of us. We are working hard to encourage Khedive Units to attend as many functions as possible to provide needed visibility and recognition. The parade season begins with the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade at Ocean View on March 14th. A pre-parade breakfast will be hosted by Illustrious Sir Bill Kern. We have the honor of parading with the Knights of Columbus and the Ocean View community. Refreshments will be served at the Knights’ Hall on Government Avenue after the parade. This parade is the first of many. Your participation in parades is vital. Whether a Shrine Mason is in uniform walking, riding cars, motorcycles, or floats, we have the opportunity to educate the public of the amazing work being done at the Shriner’s Hospitals for Children. Attached is a list of 2015 Temple parades and events. For further updates, visit the Temple web site and mark your calendars. There are many events to enjoy this year; the Chesapeake Oyster Roast, Shrine Night with the Admirals, Khedive Rodeo, Shrine Night at Langley Raceway, and the Oyster Bowl, just to name a few. I will make sure you have the information you need as each event gets closer. Please mark your calendars now to reserve the dates. Participation is very important as when we socialize and share our experiences of the Mystic Shrine and Masonry at any event, it helps to educate the public on what we are all about. Remember to utilize the Temple web site. It is a valuable resource that provides a calendar of events, articles, procedure manuals, photos, fund raisers, and much more to keep us informed. Contact Anne to add information to the site. A welldeserved thank you to Anne for all her hard work diligently maintaining this valuable resource. I look forward to working with each and every Unit Head as we support our Temple through increased visibility. I will provide appropriate leadership to the best of my ability and look forward to enthusiastic participation throughout the year. Yours in Faith, Les Aker Director of Uniformed Units 2015

Khedive Membership

Membership Chairman By Chuck Schwender

I

t is my honor to serve as Membership Chairman for the Khedive Shrine. My Lady, Charlee, and I attended an inspirational and eye-opening membership development conference in early October 2014. The participants consisted of Membership Chairmen and their Ladies from across the US, Canada, and Panama. I will be sharing information from that conference as well as information about Khedive’s membership initiative as time goes on. If you are reading this, your help is needed. Our Khedive brotherhood needs all of us to survive and thrive. The following paragraph came mostly from an appeal of another Shrine Center to their membership. Are you an inactive Shriner or Mason who, either because of physical limitations or other commitments, cannot attend meetings? Do you think that because you don’t attend the meetings that you are not needed by the Masonic organizations to which you belong? Well, think again my Brother!! Without YOU, the active members would have no place to go to meet for fellowship and to support their cause. There would be no Blue Lodge, no Scottish or York Rite, no Tall Cedars, no Shrine Temple, and no Shriners Hospitals for Children. Whether a member attends all the meetings, some of the meetings, or none of the meetings, it is every single dues paying member creating the cement

that holds each of our great fraternities together… and makes it possible for them to go on. Would we like you to be more active. Yes, absolutely. If there is some way we can help you do that, will we do that? Yes, again! But if you can’t, we want you to know that we value your membership and appreciate your support by way of your dues. You are still one of the pillars that support the World’s Oldest Fraternity and the World’s Greatest Philanthropy. Don’t think you don’t matter. Don’t think you don’t make a difference. Stand with your Brothers, pay your dues, and be proud of the traditions and the philanthropy that you support. Writing that check is an action that assures that we will continue on for the sake of our sons, our grandsons, our great-grandsons, and most of all for the children who need our hospitals. At Khedive and other Shrines across the country, our membership is decreasing every year. It is our goal as an international organization and, even more importantly, as Khedive Shrine to reverse that trend. We need to retain every dues paying member that we can. God has other plans for some of us, but as long as a Brother is living we need to keep their support. We also need to work together to add new members. That means all of us. Active or not you can promote your fraternity by wearing your rings, pins, hats, and shirts that announce that you are a member. When

people ask, let them know who we are, and what we do for each other and the kids. If you are active in your Blue Lodge, Scottish or York Rite, or Tall Cedars, be sure to share the Shriners’ story. If you aren’t comfortable doing it, contact me and we will have someone visit your lodge. Talk about the Hospitals whenever you get a chance and open the door for a potential new member to walk in. Remember Nobles, “IT’S ALL ABOUT THE KIDS.” So if you would like to participate in any way with member retention or growth, please let me know. We have a lot to do to reach our goal of 100 or more new members in 2015. I welcome all of your efforts and suggestions to achieve our goal and keep our current members. I’ll keep you posted on plans and objectives in each Hi-Noble and don’t be surprised to see me at your meetings. Thank you for being a Brother. Thank you for paying your dues. But most of all, thank you for supporting the kids!!!!

FUND-RAISING ACTIVITIES It is natural to associate the fez with Shriners Hospitals for Children. Because of this, meticulous attention must be given to all fund-raising activities, including circuses, to make certain that a contributor is not led to believe that his money will be used for the Hospitals when all or a portion thereof will be used otherwise. The integrity of our charity and of our fraternity must remain above reproach. Your specific attention is called to the following fraternal and charitable by laws: §335.3 USE OF NAME "SHRINERS HOSPITALS FOR CHILDREN." The use of the name "Shriners Hospitals for Children" or reference to the Hospitals in connection with any fund-raising activity by a temple or Noble without the written consent of the Imperial Potentate and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Hospitals is prohibited.

(c) The temple shall report the result of each charitable fund-raising activity within sixty (60) days of the activity, to Shriners Hospitals for Children, on the Shrine Charity Activity Form (CAF) provided to the temple. (d) This section shall not apply to activities exempt under §335.4(b) of the bylaws of The Imperial Council. (e) Each independent corporation or entity that receives the permission of the Imperial Potentate and the Chairman. of the Board of Trustees to raise money for Shriners Hospitals for Children, and which does not have its financial accounts audited pursuant to §§334.5 & 337.8 of the bylaws of The Imperial Council, shall have its financial accounts audited by a certified, chartered or licensed public accountant and shall submit such audit report to The Imperial Council within 120 days of the activity.

§503.10 The use of the name "Shriners Hospitals for Children" or reference to the hospitals in connection with any commercial product or business enterprise is prohibited unless the written consent of the Board of Directors and Trustees has been first obtained. Now, therefore, IT IS HEREBY ORDERED: 1. Fund-Raising for Fraternal Purposes: (a) No Noble (in his capacity as a Shriner), club, unit, organization of Nobles or affiliated or appendant corporations, shall engage in any fundraising activity without the express written consent of the potentate of the temple having jurisdiction thereof. (b) There can be no representation, express or implied, that the proceeds will be for the benefit of Shriners Hospitals for Children. (c) The temple potentate shall carefully examine all phases of the advertising, promotion and solicitation to determine that it complies with §335.3 and §503.9 of the fraternal and charitable bylaws. (d) The temple potentate must approve the terms and provisions of any contract for a fund-raising activity after receiving the advice of the temple attorney, and, additionally, as may be required by the temple bylaws. (e) A copy of the temple potentate's written consent shall be mailed to the Imperial Recorder. Further, such written material pertaining to the fund-raising activity, as requested by the Imperial Recorder, shall be promptly mailed to him. 2. Fund-Raising for Charitable Purposes: (a) No Noble (in his capacity as a Shriner), club, unit, organization of Nobles or affiliated or appendant corporations shall engage in any charitable fund-raising activity other than for Shriners Hospitals for Children. Permission therefor must be first obtained in writing from the temple potentate. The temple potentate must then obtain written permission from the Imperial Potentate and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees. This request for written permission shall be sent to the Executive Vice President—Fraternal, Imperial Council, P.O. Box 31356, Tampa, FL 33631-3356. (b) 100% of the net proceeds from charitable fund-raising must be given to Shriners Hospitals for Children except for such portion thereof as may be permitted to be retained for the temple Shrine Hospital Patient Transportation Fund pursuant to the Special Purpose Funds provisions of any existing General Order.

3. Statement of Purpose and Disclosure: (a) Every fund-raising activity must contain factual information on its solicitation material, tickets, programs and documents regarding the use of the proceeds. Examples “Proceeds are for the benefit of ( Temple) (Shrine Club) activities.“ “Proceeds are for the benefit of Shriners Hospitals for Children.“ (b) Every fund-raising activity which is not entirely for the benefit of Shriners Hospitals for Children shall prominently state on the solicitation material, tickets and documents that "payments are not deductible as charitable contributions." (c) There must be compliance with the Revenue Act of 1987 provision of any existing general order by U.S. temples. 4. Compliance with Applicable Laws: It is the responsibility of the temple potentate, after receiving the advice of the temple attorney, to determine that there is compliance with all applicable laws in its jurisdiction for the temple's fundraising activities. 5. Financial Records: (a) The temple shall maintain detailed financial records pertaining to all fund-raising activities involving Nobles, clubs, units, organizations of Nobles or affiliated or appendant corporations. Details of all revenues and disbursements shall be maintained in such financial records. (b) The temple must retain such detailed financial records for a period of seven (7) years. (c) There must be compliance with the Financial Reporting on Charitable Funds and Activities provision of any existing general order. 6. Notification to Nobility: A copy of the Fund-Raising Activities provisions of this General Order shall be printed in the temple publication at least once every calendar year. If there is no temple publication, then a copy shall be mailed to each Noble in the temple not later than the last day in March of each calendar year. 7. Philadelphia Hospital Report By Lon Weber

N

obles and Families, Greetings from Greenville. We are doing well at the hospital. Patient count continues to increase, as well as donations. We have two more physicians on staff and we have added Fridays to the operating schedule. We are now performing procedures five days a week. One thing I have heard at Greenville, and also at two other hospitals, is how nice and friendly the Khedive drivers are, and how well they interact with the children and parents. What is amazing is that some of the folks that made these nice compliments aren’t even patients of Khedive, but of other Temples. It is very important to me that I thank each one of you for everything you do. Every one of you plays a very important part in our mission. If you ever have a question or need to talk to me for any reason, please do not hesitate to call me any time. If anyone would like to accompany me to a hospital board meeting, they always fall on the fourth Monday of each month. I leave Sunday morning and return Tuesday morning. Thank you, Jody R. Dudley Board of Governors Shriners Hospital for Children-Greenville REMEMBER OUR OBLIGATION, OUR CHILDREN!

A

s reported previously, with the retirement of Ernie Perilli, the last several months have been devoted to a national search for his replacement. We cannot discount the importance of this appointment and I am delighted to announce the selection of Edward Myers as our next Administrator. Mr. Myers brings with him extensive experience in hospital administration both in the public and private sector and will be in place when the Board meets in February. In my letter of congratulations to him I said, “The Philadelphia Hospital is considered to be distinguished and with your leadership it will continue to be just that.” I am also pleased to mention that I have been asked to serve on a special Task Force charged with the responsibility of framing the the agenda for a two-day special Retreat for the Board of Governors to be held later this year. The Hospital must address both its short and long term goals as well as the means of implementation. The timing of this effort is significant in that it will provide our new Administrator the opportunity to fully participate in discussions directly impacting his assignment. Lastly, I would like to underscore again, the significance of VOLUME and ask that all those reading this appeal appoint him/herself a COMMITTEE of ONE in identifying children who can benefit from the care and treatment our Hospitals provide. That is the charge--the implementation is up to YOU. I am, Yours in the Faith.

surpassed only by MASA this is the biggest and best parade we participate in. The best part of the day though is breakfast at Illustrious Sir Bill Kern`s house. This is something that Bill has done for years and all he asks for in return, or advance, is a little monetary support for the supplies. Talk to your Treasurer now and as the saying goes “help a brother out.” And last but certainly not least for this quarter the Mack Daddy of all functions The Chesapeake Shrine Club`s Oyster Roast will be held on Saturday March 28th from 1:00 until 4:00. Need I say more? Nobles and Ladies this is a brand new year and things are happening all around you so shake off the cob webs, get out of the house and enjoy what the Shrine has to offer. Yours in the Faith, Joe Ramsey

ast year we added 17 new patients but lost 3. One of those 3 was our nurse who worked in the ICU at Kings Daughters. She was responsible for getting us 4 burn patients over the last 5 years. We also lost “Boog,” who was one of our favorites. He’s the one who told a couple of drivers from up north that he was going to throw them in the trash can when they wouldn’t talk to him. We need help in getting new patients. In 2014, we took in $123,000 and spent $121,000. Our income for 2014 does not include the Oyster Bowl receipts which were not posted until January. Our expenses include $15,500 for an air ambulance trip in late December, 2013 and paid for in January,

2014. We have had an air ambulance expense in 4 of the last 5 years. If you have a function going on and want some type of Shrines Hospital display, our lift van (#7) is usually available. It’s the one with the wrap on it. It makes a very good display for paper drives or any Shrine function where all or some part of the proceeds are going to the Hospital or Transportation Fund. It can also be used for non-Shrine functions where we just want to get the word out. Don’t forget that your Speakers Bureau members “have speech, will travel.” I’m usually available most of the time and love to talk about our Hospitals. Isn’t it great to be a “Khedive Shriner!”

We have been working the oyster line over 25 years and enjoyed every moment of it. Lately we have added other Nobles and their Ladies, as the Black Camel has taken a toll on or membership. We may be getting smaller in numbers, but we are still surviving. We wish all the Nobility and their families a Happy and Properous New Year and invite all to join us for fun and fellowship in 2015. KhediveShrine Band

I

100 Years

t’s going to be a noteworthy year for the Khedive Band as we celebrate our 100th anniversary. We’ve had our share of difficult times, but we’ve also had much success over the years and have managed to keep the band together for 100 years. We have had many Nobles participate with the band, and we’ve made a lot of people smile with our music. We hope to continue making music as a Unit of Khedive Temple for many years to come. We’re making some changes in the band due to changes in our instrumentation and membership commitments. I’m sure everyone will enjoy this year’s band. The Khedive Band is currently rehearsing new music that will be more familiar and exciting to our audiences, especially when we play before the business meetings. We’ll be on the street for the Saint Patty’s day parade, and hope we have better weather this year. We’re looking for a driver to drive the truck for our float in the parades and join the band. If you’re interested in helping out, please contact Jeff Davis at 757- 831-1635. We could also use some hands with moving, setting up, and tearing down equipment for our various band performances. You

BY D I R E C TO R J E FF D AVI S

don’t have to play an instrument, but we’d love to have the extra hand or 2 to help out with these important duties. The Khedive Notables, our 20 piece dance band, has been doing a great job these past 5 years. We’ve decided to make a few minor changes to our music and we’re bringing in some new musicians; the band is already sounding great. The dance band’s name will be changed to reflect the changes, but the group will continue to be a great addition to help support the band unit. The Dance Band will perform at the Khedive Band’s Spring Dance on April 24th at the Shrine Center as well as on the stage at the Strawberry Festival before the parade starts. Tickets for our Spring Dance will be on sale shortly, and will be $15.00 each in advance. We’re excited about the upcoming year and really look forward to being 100 years old. What an exciting time to be in the band! Over the last few years we have lost some of our nobles to the black camel. We will definitely miss Harry Tuttle, a past Band Director and long time Drum Corps member, and one of the most dedicated members of the band and Shrine. His passion for music and playing

trumpet was an inspiration to a lot of us in the band. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Harry and his dedicated wife and lifelong friend Linda Tuttle. Harry will always be remembered by the members of the Khedive Band and will be missed. We are always looking for new musicians to join the band and help us grow. If you are a member of the Khedive Shrine and play an instrument and have an interest in the band, please come out to a rehearsal. Don’t worry if you have gotten rusty; we’ll help you get back up to speed. We rehearse on Tuesday Nights from 7:30 to 9:30 every Tuesday except the 2nd Tuesday of the month. We’re flexible musicians and just want to get together to play and have fun. If you’d like more information about what’s going on with the band, please email Director, Jeff Davis, at jeffscottdavis@hotmail. com or call 757- 831-1635 and I’ll be glad to fill you in.

We are sorry to say that Nobles sometimes pass away without our acknowledgement. As they are Brothers, they are due the recognition of their passing. Please assist in notifying the Temple when a Noble expires. Phone 757-420-4510 or email info@khediveshrine.org [ 22 ] HI-NOBLE / 1ST QTR 2015

rom the Beach Bum Brothers Unit “Welcome to 2015” and let’s make it yet another great year. We extend our congratulations to the newly elected and installed Potentate and Divan of Khedive Shrine. We look forward to working with Illustrious Sir Elwood Paschal and supporting his theme of “It’s All About the Kids.” If you have seen us riding in various parades in the past, we do our best to interact with the folks along the parade routes, especially the young children. Their expressions as we ride up to them and speak with them are amazing. We as Beach Bum Brothers do our best to spread the good cheer and message of Khedive to everyone we see along the parade routes and have been well received by all. Having fun and spreading the message about the great work of the Shriners is what we do best. The Beach Bum Brothers are beginning their sixth year in Khedive and are excited about being a part of the various Shrine events. We are planning to participate in

ongratulations to Illustrious Sir Elwood Paschal and his Divan on their elections to serve our Temple for the year 2015. I would like to thank Illustrious Sir Elwood Paschal on my appointment to the position of Temple Director. I consider it an honor to serve with this Divan. The Staff is looking forward to working with you and your Divan for this year. The officers for the Staff, for the year 2015 are as Harry S.Truman would say “For the Duration“ look a lot like the officers for the year 2014. Director, Watt Perley, President, Donald Respess and Secretary and Treasurer, James Kiphart and I thank them for their service. Sunday 11 January 2015 the Devotional and Memorial Service was held at the Khedive Shrine Center, it

was a beautiful service followed by breakfast. then the reading of the names of 87 Deceased Nobles, Taps and Closing remarks. The Shrine Center sends an invention to the Deceased Nobles family’s for the Memorial Service. I feel the attendance could be helped if the Shrine Center would add a notation for the Memorial service in the Hi-Noble, that the Service is open to all our Nobles. The Service was conducted by the Temple Chaplain the Reverend Noble Scott Foxwell (Photos page 24). Rest in Peace, Noble Robert W. Miles, Sr., 13 January 2015. It is that time of the year again for us to plan the 2015 Khedive Golf Season, but before we get into our planning, we want to congratulate the newly elected and installed Potentate, Elwood Paschal and his Divan of Khedive Shrine. The 2014 Khedive Golf Season was a wet one, of the first seven outings; five were cancelled due to rain. But this did not hamper our Golf Club; we average at each outing over 110 players during the year. We also had 3 players making Hole-In-Ones during the 2014 season, the first Hole-In-One was made by Noble Buddy Carroll at the Battlefield

Golf Course, the second Hole-In-One was by Al Riggs member guest of Buddy Carroll at the Cypress Creek Golf Course and the third Hole-In-One was by Larry Willis member guest of Noble Charles Bland at the Elizabeth Manor Country Club/Golf Course. The last scheduled outing for the 2014 season was on November 18, 2014 at the Honey Bee Golf Course in Va. Beach, at which time we announced the Khedive Club Champions, Flight Winners, Banquet, Turkey Blitz and Election of Officers for 2015. After a great luncheon, President Parker McDaniel and Treasurer Woody Brown gave their annual reports, at that time a motion was made, second and voted on by the members to donate $6,000 to the Khedive Transportation Fund. During the presentation of the Club Champion and prizes to winners of their flights; each winner donated their prize back to the Golf Club. A motion was made and second to add the $840 donated winnings to the $6,000; the Golf Club agreed and the total donation was rounded up to $7,000. As quoted by the Past Vice President Jerry Edward in 2013 Hi-Noble: Your Golf Club understands the importance of distance and measurements as we strive to hit

ell we made it through another year and what a year it was. Congratulations to now Past President Jeff Tuell and his crew for a great year with quite a few innovative ideas. We had great speakers and inviting outings but still we could not fill up the room. What are you guys looking for in a meeting? Give us a call or drop us a line and let’s talk it over. That is enough of that whining. Let`s get on to what President Wayne has in store for us. Right off the bat we have the 38th annual Chesapeake Shrine Club Oyster Roast. This event is always a hit. Be there or be square. April 17/18/19 will be yet another headliner Chesapeake Shrine Club Hospital/Golf Trip. Nobles this is a blast and at $250.00 a person it is a steal. All we need from you is a $50.00 deposit to hold your seat. We need a minimum of 30 guys to make this happen. Linda can Roger please go? Coming up in May will be Ladies Night and we are again

Nobles, in these unstable economic times we all need to step up to help a needy child and family during their hardship. A Big Thanks goes to all of the Khedive Golf Club Shrine and Guest Members for their donations and support during the year raising money to help a needy child and their family. The 2014 Khedive Golf Club Championship Winners are as follows: Club Champion with a Low Net Score of 60 went to Noble Parker McDaniel, the Low Gross Score of 73 went to Noble Freddie Veraque and the Most Improved player was guest member Ben Consalvo. This year we had 121 members eligible for the Khedive Golf Club Championship and had eight different handicap flights; paying out a total of $840.00 to 39 winners. The newly elected officers for the 2015 season are as follows; President Bill Hoggard, Vice President J.W.Wilson, Secretary-Treasurer Clif Smith, Activities Director Johnnie Chandler and Chaplain Dudley Myers. having it aboard the American Rover. The date is April 17th which is a Sunday and the cost is $40.00 per couple. There will not be a meeting on the third Monday in April. Seating is limited and it is first come first serve with a $40.00 deposit necessary to hold your seat. In June the club will be dark but we will be manning the concession tent at the Rodeo. I will provide more information as we get closer to the event. That should be enough to get us to the 2nd quarter of the Hi-Noble so I will shut her down here. Nobles please look around the room we are dying on the vine we need some new blood. Just remember your Lodge needs Masons and your Temple needs candidates. Chesapeake Shrine Club 3rd Monday of the month social begins at 6:00 and the meal will be served at 7:00. We`ll leave the light on for you. Yours in the Faith, Joe Ramsey

reetings Nobles! I hope everyone had a wonderful 2014 holiday season. Did you make a New Year’s resolution? I’ll leave the exercise resolutions to someone else so good luck with that! Mine was to visit and fellowship with our fellow Brother Nobles in new places and I started off on the right foot. I recently visited the Al Amin Temple in Corpus Christi, Texas. My father, Noble Don Adams introduced me to some Nobles in January. We extended fraternal greetings to all brethren and best wishes for a successful year. They serve our Shrine Kids primarily in South Texas. Their hospitals of operation are in Houston and Galveston, TX. and even Shreveport, LA! Many of their Kids are picked up in Mexico and cared for here in the U.S. I hope everyone gets a chance to visit other Temples and Hospitals; it was an eye opening and rewarding experience. On behalf of our unit, I would like to congratulate the 2015 Divan on their election. Moreover, a big congratulations to Chief Josh Ramsey, our officers and newest Nobles, Paul Orvis and Buck Crocker! We’re looking forward to a fun and ACTIVE 2015! Let’s Roll! Be sure to stay abreast to our events by THOROUGHLY reading the emails Bob Travis sends you, checking the Khedive web page and on our Facebook page. We are always looking to build our ranks. If you would like to ride with the best unit around, drop by before one of our monthly meetings or give us a call. We meet the second Tuesday of every month at the Khedive Shrine Center (Rm#7) at 7pm. Fellowship and dinner is served promptly at 6:15. If you haven’t checked out our Facebook page, come on over and “friend” us. Search for us as http://www.facebook.com/ khedive.firebrigade. See you online and everywhere else!!

reetings Nobles, Ladies, and Air Horn Fan Club Members. Our members would like to congratulate Illustrious Randy Murphy on a wonderful year as Khedive’s Potentate. His commitment and devotion to members and his continued support of the Temple’s goals and purpose does not go unnoticed and is truly appreciated. The responsibility of the honorable role of Potentate has now been passed on. Our unit would like to extend our congratulations to Illustrious Elwood Paschal on being installed as Potentate of Khedive Temple, and also to Noble Oscar Obsuna on being elected as the Oriental Guide. This past December, we held our officer installation and Christmas party. Illustrious Jim Canterbury P.P. was our installing officer and once again, did a fantastic job. Congratulations to Noble Gil Sawyer for being installed as Captain of our unit (for the next 8 years). Thanks to all who came out and enjoyed a trucker’s feast!

The Mini 18 Wheelers have been quite busy this winter and we a growing at a rapid pace not seen in years!! In the last Hi-Noble I mentioned our newest Trucker, Noble Joe Daigle. Since then we have added 2 more full time truckers to our unit. We would like to welcome Noble Mike Johansen and Noble Eddie Foley. We are currently building Joe & Mike new trucks, and hope to have them ready by St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Noble Cliff Atkinson has graciously offered his truck for use, so Noble Eddie will be parading in a rig that many of you have not seen on the streets in a very long time. Thank You Noble Cliff for your continued support! In addition to our 3 new members we have also welcome 2 new associate members. Welcome Nobles Mike Fitts and Tim Leggett, to the Mini 18 Wheelers! We are looking forward to getting back out on the streets and making some serious noise at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Hopefully, we will all have a nice warm day so that all of our members

can participate. Remember, the parade etiquette…no talking on your cell phone when the Mini 18 Wheelers roll by--our air horns overrule any phone! Our unit normally meets on the first Monday of each month, and we are always looking to add more trucks to the road. If our members cannot find a truck for you, then we can build one. If you are interested in becoming a member of Khedive’s “Best Looking Unit,” please come on by the Truck Stop for a visit or call any of our members as listed in the roster. Es Selamu Aleikum! REETINGS from the KRD. Here’s hoping everyone enjoyed the Holiday season and that you are all off to a great start in 2015. Congratulations to Illustrious Sir Elwood on his election as Potentate of our great Temple. A tip of the Fez also to each of the members of the Divan on their respective elections and to Noble Oscar as well on his election as Oriental Guide. Each of us in the KRD pledge to do our best to support all of you, and Khedive, in the coming year. Plans are underway for St. Patrick’s Day. Our float has undergone a transformation already but we are not yet finished. Be sure to come out to Ocean View for the St. Pat’s parade and see us in action on our renovated float. We welcome all Shriners who may have a desire to participate with us. There are speaking parts and non-speaking parts in the Ceremonial, we have great fun riding (not walking) in parades and participating in the fellowship that goes along with it,

and we are active supporters of our Temple and the Shriner’s Hospitals. So, whether you want to get on stage or just have fun with your fellow Shriners, feel free to stop by and visit anytime. Our meetings are held on the third Wednesday of each month starting at 6:30pm in our unit room at the temple. We welcome you all! See you on the street! Es Selamu Aleikum!

obles, the Roadrunners continue to support our greatest philanthropic effort as Shriners, that of transporting our patients and families to the four Shriners Hospitals for Children we support. In calendar year 2014, a total of 113 patients travelled for various evaluations, surgical procedures, and follow-on treatments. Over 81% of patients and their family traveled in Khedive hospital vans, with the remainder either being selfdriven by families or flown by our air wing support. We continue to look for more Nobles to support this worthy cause. Our support to parents/guardians and their children (patients) is a most rewarding personal endeavor. Each trip will provide you, the Shriner, with first-hand knowledge of what our Shriners Hospitals for Children do in assisting our patients to overcome various medical issues. Viewing the various television spots about Shriners Hospitals for Children can provide you with a great feeling about our hospital’s medical care abilities. However, Nobles that have witnessed the amazing changes in patient’s health and their family thankfulness would always say that their time and effort was well spent. Three of our Khedive Nobles (and Roadrunners) serve on the Board of Governors for the Shriners Hospitals in Greenville, SC (Jody Dudley), and Philadelphia (Lon Weber and Chuck Schwender). obles, isn’t it great to be a Shriner?!! You bet it is! On behalf of the Peninsula Shrine Club I would like to extend hearty congratulations to Illustrious Sir Elwood Paschal and Lady Pat in being elected as our Potentate. Also “high fives” to the entire Divan on their progression, particularly to our new Oriental Guide, Oscar Obsuna and Lady Violeta. Bring on the M&M peanuts and Raisinets! Happy New Year to all the Units and Cubs of Khedive Shrine and may you all have a successful year. Nobles when those of us on the front lines do well then the Temple does well and this continues all the way up to the children. And that my friends, is what it is all about. Randy Murphy and Lady Deb-Thanks for a wonderful year! A class act, for sure. Many thanks to Page Neale for a great 2014 as president of the Peninsula Shrine Club and for nominating me for the job for 2015. Hmmm… Thanks to Bruce Edwards for stepping up to fill the role as VP. We are glad to see that arm is healing nicely! Renewed thanks to Pete Eure and Van Wilson for staying the course as secretary and treasurer. The PSC board has already their first meeting of 2015 where the ground work was laid for club activities for the first half of the year. The board meets on the 2nd Monday in the odd months, 7pm at the Newport News Scottish Rite. The first monthly meeting of the Peninsula Shrine Club was held on Jan 26th and the plans

for fund raising were purposed to the Nobles in attendance. Right Worshipful Jerry Burkes was our guest speaker for the evening and enlightened us all with the income tax changes for 2014. I am happy to report that the messenger was not shot however desert was withheld. PSC meets every 4th Monday at 730 at Steve’s Steakhouse in Newport News. Social begins at 6 and dinner at 630. All Nobles are welcome.

Peninsula Shrine Club we will once again sell Vidalia onions for $10 for a 10lb bag. This year we will pre-sell the onions in an effort to get the freshest produce possible to our patrons. Nobles we need your support. We have scheduled our paper drive for 4 dates this spring. Friday May 8th, Saturday May 9th, Friday Jun 5th and Saturday Jun 6th. All will take place at Pop’s Drive Inn at George Washington Highway in Yorktown from 6am to 1pm. Nobles, 100% of these donations go to benefit the children of the Shrine Hospitals. Plan a road trip to Pop’s. The food is wonderful and the atmosphere can’t be beat. A WIN WIN!

Nobles! If you know any member who hasn't paid his dues for 2015 talk to him about paying now.

To help support the activities of the Peninsula Shrine Club we will once again sell Vidalia onions for $10 for a 10lb bag. This year we will pre-sell the onions in an effort to get the freshest produce possible to our patrons. Nobles we need your support. Many thanks to the Tidewater Shrine Club for supplying the onions-they are truly brothers to our club. As our May monthly meeting falls on Memorial more times than not, we are again considering cancelling the May meeting. This meeting is historically poorly attended. Noble Jerry Whitlock will be again organizing the half day fishing trip in Hampton Roads Harbor. This event is slated for June but an exact date has not been determined as yet. Nobles sign up early as space is limited and interest is high. This also is a fundraiser for the Peninsula Shrine Club. June is shaping up to be jamb packed as we plan the PSC monthly meeting. At this meeting we will celebrate “Ladies Night”. I realize this is a little different than the past but the guest speaker for the evening will be my niece Heather Thompson and her daughter, Virginia. We thought the ladies might enjoy the program. Some of you may recall that Virginia is a Shrine child and is a patient at the Philadelphia Hospital. Let’s put our best foot forward by having a great turn out. Nobles, that’s about it for now from me. If anyone has any suggestions or would like to just chat, feel free to contact me between 6am and 9pm any day. Thank You All, Arthur G. appy New Years to Nobles all. We here at the Tidewater Shrine Club hope everyone had a great holiday season and are now ready to tackle a new year of helping our kids. Congrats to the incoming Divan. Illustrious Elwood we stand ready to help you in all your endeavors for the year. Congrats to Noble president Jon Beck who will once again lead the TSC. We had our planning meeting on Sat. the 17th of January and I am pleased to report we had 18 Nobles present which means we got a lot of work done. After the meeting we retreated to Coor street and had a little brotherhood. It was a nice way to start the New Year. I am pleased to report that we presented checks to the Temple (for the Transportation Fund), to International for the hospitals and also a check to the

Greenville hospital. We had a great year and we totaled close to $20,00.00 in donations this year. Thank you to all the Nobles of the TSC and Khedive Temple for all the support you showed us this year. We could not have done it without everyone of you. We have the same basic events planned for this year. Paper drive, Golf Tournament, Onion sales, etc. We have some new ideas that we are looking at but more about that in the future. The planning is over and we are starting our hard work for the year. Noble’s a lot is asked of us for the things we do to support our kids and our hospitals. Seems like the more we do and the harder we work, the more is needed from each of us. I just want to take a moment and thank all the Nobles in the Khedive Temple for all the work you do. Sometimes it might seem like a thankless endeavor but when you

attend functions where our kids attend you will know in your hearts how much we are appreciated and needed. That to me is what it is all about. I am lucky enough to be associated with the fat man in red at Christmas time. In all the years that I have been lucky enough to be able to help, these last three years at the temple Christmas party for the kids have been among my most rewarding. Go to the hospitals, join the Roadrunners, do whatever you can and I guarantee you will be able to meet any new year in a most positive and grateful manner. We will be having our monthly meetings at Nicks this year. They are located just over the Coleman bridge in Gloucester. We meet the third Thursday of the month. Social hour starts at 6:30pm, dinner at 7:00 pm. Please come and join us for some good old Guinea hospitality we would love to have you. By Past President Tom E. Lasher

T

he Williamsburg Shrine Club would like to congratulate Illustrious Elwood Paschal on his election to Potentate, to all of the members of the Divan on their advancements, and to Noble Oscar Obsuna on being elected Oriental Guide. What a great group of officers our Temple has, and what a bright future. The Club has had a busy and profitable fourth quarter, beginning in October with a fundraiser Spaghetti Dinner, held as always, at the Capitol Pancake House here in Williamsburg. The turnout was remarkable. Nobody went away hungry, the working Nobles had fun, and best of all, we made money for our Temple, Club, and of course, THE KIDS. In November, the Club had Dr. Daniel Carlson, a local chiropractor, as our guest speaker. He talked about the effects of aging on our body and specifically our back. It was a very informative evening and as the evening drew to a close, as we stood for the Benediction, we all stood as straight as we could, and looked as healthy as was possible. In December we had our annual Ladies Night and Christmas Party. This year it was held at the Fords Colony Dining Room. At the conclusion of the evening, our current Chief Rabban, Woody Brown, with the assistance of our current High Priest and Prophet, Mike Coffman, installed our 2015 Club officers. It made for a fitting conclusion to a great evening. In January the Club had its semi - annual Organizational Business meeting where there was much discussion about the upcoming events at the Temple as well as the Club. Finally, a huge THANKS to Illustrious Randy Murphy and the 2014 Divan for a great year, and all of the support they gave the Williamsburg Shrine Club. The Club accomplished so much this past year, and without your support, it would not have been possible. And what a joy it was to have the Divan and their families at our various functions throughout the year. Again thanks to Illustrious Randy and Lady Debbie, as well as all of the other Divan members and their families. As always, we hope you will take the opportunity to come over and see us. We meet on the first Wednesday of each month at the Holiday Inn on Bypass Road (US 60) in Williamsburg. The social hour begins at 6:00PM with dinner at 7:00PM. Come enjoy the fun, fellowship and food.

Directions to the Holiday Inn are easy. Take I-64 to Williamsburg. And when you get here, take the “Camp Perry exit . Turn onto Rt 143 EAST. Pass through the first stop light, then turn right at the next stoplight, and then turn right again at the next stoplight. That is Bypass Rd., or US Rt 60. The hotel is located at the top of the hill, on the right, next to the Knights Inn 1776. Please call Noble Dick Jones ((757-566-0506) by the Friday before the meeting to make a dinner reservation.

Hillbillies

By Assistant Director Sam McAfee

S

ince the last issue... In October, the Hillbillies put on our most successful to date Annual Chicken Fest. Thank you to all who participated and a special thank you to our Lady Hillbillies for all you hard work and dedication. To our Past Director, Andy Little, thank you for a most successful event. The Hillbillies traveled to Urbanna, again this year, for the annual Oyster Fest and Parade. Although, Lady Nancy and I were unable to attend, it was reported that all who attended had a great time, with good weather, and no need for tarps. On December 20th we held our annual Christmas party and installation of Officers, at Aberdeen Barn. Our new officers are: Director: Kim Hall, Assistant Director: Sam McAfee, Treasurer: Shep Mcclenny, Secretary: Lank Malbone, and Sargent at Arms: Bill Hamiliton. Best wishes to all, and we are looking forward to another great year for the Hillibillies! Special thanks to Andy Little, Past Director, for all your hard work, making 2014 such a successful year. The Hillbillie of the Year Award is traditionally presented at the annual Christmas party. This year the award has been renamed, the Edward “Unk” Dowel Award. In recognition and memory of the years of dedication and service Unk gave to this unit. Lady Shirley Dowell was present for the first presentation

of the “Unk” to George “Liggy” Lingefeltter. Our Hillbillie of the Year. Great job Liggy! We hope that everyone will join us for our monthly meetings at the shack. They are on the 4th Wednesday of each month, with a social hour from 6-7pm and the meeting following the meal. Also, remind your ladies to join the Lady Hillbillies on those same nights for their dinners. Until then, see ya’all around the shack or on the street. Sam McAfee, Assistant Director

By 1st Lieutenant

T

he Provost Guard held their annual Christmas Party and Officer Installation December 13th, when Captain Mike Warlikowski dismissed his committees and thanked everyone for all of their support last year. The Color Guard joined with Provost this year in celebrating the Season which made the party a great success. Hopefully they will join us or us them in 2015 for the celebration. Thanks to all of the Ladies who provided the decorations for the event. Installed as Officers for 2015 were Captain Woody Keating, 1st Lieutenant Wesley King, 2nd Lieutenant Gwinn Dunbar, Sergeant Bill Batten and Secretary /Treasurer Bill Lauterbach Jr. We congratulate Illustrious Sir Randy Murphy on the fine job last year and we look forward to a fantastic year with Illustrious Elwood Pascal and the newly elected Divan. Congratulations to all the new officers in their Clubs and Units. Lets all step up and make this year the success our Kids and Temple deserve. Illustrious Elwood has set the tone now it is up to every Shriner to make the year a true success. We are looking forward to the first parade of the year, the St. Patrick’s day parade on March 14th. This is always a fun parade for everyone.

Press on – Nothing can take the place of persistence, Talent will not, nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with Talent, Genius will not, unrewarded genius is almost a Proverb, Education will not, the world is full of educated derelicts.
