Welcome!
To the third edition of this handy guide to services, groups and events at St Albans’ churches. This guide is not an exhaustive list but covers the churches which offer some sort of hospitality or groups for older people in St Albans.

The guide is aimed at people who are 65+, offering details on mainly daytime weekday activities which are usually accessible by public transport. The events are generally low cost, and in some cases free. All the listings are hosted by churches from a range of denominations.
I hope this information will provide a handy reference, and encourage you to find out more about what the churches locally offer older people. I would urge you to check online for up-to-date information (this guide was published in June 2023) or call the number listed if you need further details about any groups or events. Some activities need prebooking and are marked with an orange dot but others, marked with a green dot, you can just drop in on
Hello, my name is Maggie Dodd and I’m St Albans’ Anna Chaplain
You may not have heard about Anna Chaplaincy. It’s a model of care which seeks to accompany older people at this age and stage of their lives. It is an ecumenical, community-based chaplaincy promoting the spiritual welfare of older people. It involves visiting older people wherever they may be living, whether in residential and nursing homes, sheltered housing, retirement complexes or other private homes. The emphasis is on spiritual support but, clearly, people’s practical struggles will also play a part in their overall well-being. St Albans Anna Chaplaincy is supported by Marlborough Road Methodist Church and Hatfield Road Methodist Church, working closely with our friends at St Peter’s Church. It seeks to support older people here in St Albans.
If you’d like to know more about this ministry or would like to be involved (see p15), please do contact me on email: mrsmaggiedodd@gmail.com or call: 07462 586773 or visit my Facebook page: www.facebook.com/AnnaChaplaincyStAlbans

ST ALBANS CATHEDRAL SUMPTER YARD, AL1 1BY
The largest ‘church’ in St Albans. It hosts regular concerts and lunchtime organ recitals, has a modern refectory (Abbot’s Kitchen), regular exhibitions and displays and a gift shop. Entry is free (donations welcome).

The Exhibition Area in the Cathedral is worth a visit and tells the story of Alban and the history of the Cathedral. If history and heritage is your kind of thing, there is a variety of Adult Learning courses and talks which explore faith, history and culture. Many are available online via Zoom, so you can join an event without leaving your own home – very useful in the winter months. To discover the latest events and courses, please visit the Cathedral’s website under ‘Learning’.
Weekday services
The Cathedral offers a range of worship services throughout the week, with a midday Eucharist held Monday-Thursday in the Shrine Chapel, and Evensong or Evening Prayer Monday-Saturday at 5pm in the Quire. There is also a Roman Catholic Mass on Fridays at midday and monthly weekday German Lutheran, Free Church and Orthodox services. Visit www.stalbanscathedral.org/ regular-services to find a full service and music list. You can also watch live-streamed services from the comfort of your own home.
The Cathedral has a thriving congregation and a group of Lay Pastoral Assistants who support older members of their community, with phone calls, visits and sometimes Home Communion.
